the song that triggered me to want to do a deep dive into this is Shadows of the Lover's tree, which plays during the scene where Maria takes James to the garden and tells him about the legend of the woman on the island. the motif is not subtle at all but somehow i never really noticed it in game, and only paid attention to it while listening to the soundtrack by itself just now.

i have only a very rudimentary knowledge on music theory and music as a whole, and i also DONT know how to write sheet music but i wanted to illustrate the leitmotif i noticed being repeated from Magdalene (or Magdalene's Elusive Lament in the remake)

Shadows of the Lover's Tree takes the motif and removes the descending notes at the end that make it seem melancholy and somber. it quickens the pace and changes the timing (i think ? 🥹) and adds some sort of bittersweet hopefulness to the melody that lends itself to the story being told by Maria.

I have a lot more thoughts about the legend and how it relates to loop theory (not even gonna mention the motif being looped endlessly during the song) and also just foreshadowing and the info it gives you about James and Mary. but the music here in this scene really gives you a glimpse into James's psyche. he wants to find Mary, even if he knows deep down exactly what will happen when he does. it will never end well for him, but he loves her too much to give up yet.

ive yet to articulate my thoughts on other instances of this motif in the soundtrack but i really like this example !! if someone wants to expand on this ur welcome to, also please do rip me to shreds if i suck at deciphering time signatures thanks 🙏
