Missing 411 guy?

David Paulides, the guy who is the creator of "Missing 411" which is basically a conspiracy about suspicious clusters of people going missing in National Parks in the United States. He is also the bane of my existence for the past year as someone who is researching a story about someone who goes missing in a National Forest.

To start with, if you've ever been even on the fringes of "irl spooky stuff" videos on YouTube, you might have encountered this. There are a lot of youtubers and podcasters who cover this guy's content without understanding What and Who they are giving platform to. Sometimes, people don't even mention him but will relate the cases that he covers in his books or use the same conspiracy points as him. I would not be suprised if you watched a Buzzfeed Unsolved/Watcher video (which are fine btw) and then got recommended something related to Missing 411 in the sidebar since it's a similar genre. It's super popular to the point where its outgrown its creator. I can't stress enough that many of you have probably encountered this content, at least in passing, without knowing what it was.

So to recap, Missing 411 documents cases of real-life people who have disappeared or been found dead in national parks, national forests, etc and claims that these cases are unusual and mysterious. It frequently talks about missing person "clusters" and things like that. There is often an overt, if not outrightly stated, implication that something supernatural, crpytid, or UFO/alien related was involved. For starters, David Paulides has written a ton of books trying to prove the existence of bigfoot. Now, I have no issues with people believing in bigfoot, or cryptids, or aliens, but I do have an issue with people co-opting real life tragedies and twisting information to push this as conspiracy. I simply do not think it is helpful or respectful to talk about missing and dead people (and children!) like this. Also, with the high prices of his books ($100-200) he just reeks of grifter to me.

To me, Missing 411 "criteria" is a stretch at best. You will see cases "mysteriously" connected because both of these people wore red when they went missing. Both these people's bodies were found near water (as if many National Park do not have water features.) Both these people's bodies were found near granite rocks (like, the most common rock type in mountains lol.) All these cases involve the weather turning bad! (um, yeah, that's a big reason why people get in trouble?) He frequently claims that bodies being undressed is highly unusual, without ever acknowledging paradoxical undressing. Or he claims laughably weak connections between people like "these two women who went missing in different years are connected because they both had three letter names that started with A." I haven't personally listened to this talk but there is a data scientist mentioned in his Wikipedia page who examined the case data and found nothing out of the ordinary in them. If you don't want to watch a video (I don't either right now) then he also wrote this article. From a different person, this article from a podcast is also good.

David Paulides does not present Missing 411 cases with accuracy. He has been known to cherry-pick data and purposefully omit data to make them seem more unusual. Many cases he covers are either already solved, or have extensive information available. He does not retract information or admit when he is wrong. Even if he does present a particular case accurately, he has such a bad track record with reliable research that he cannot be trusted as a source. There used to be someone on reddit who would deconstruct cases he covered. In this post they found several instances of cases of Paulides missing sources and coming to incorrect conclusions.

Note there's a few differences in the sources I just linked. The data scientist and podcast skeptic both said they found the data to be accurate, while the redditors have found evidence to the contrary. The data scientist also says he found Paulides' presentation of information respectful, but I personally find all of this highly disrespectful. But despite these differences I think we can all agree....the claims of Missing 411 are pretty ridiculous.

Also, let's talk about David Paulides himself. Before becoming a writer, he was a cop in California. He was a cop who was fired for corruption (well that's hard to do), because he was caught soliciting donations for a fake charity he set up. That's straight from his Wikipedia page. He continues to use his past as a "dectective" to attempt to make his claims sound more reliable. There was also a redditor who pulled up some other career highlights from when he was a cop in the 80s, by looking at court transcripts and news articles. His job used to be entrap gay men by pretending to be gay, getting them to invite him home with them, and then arresting then. He and his unit were also accused of police brutality many times in the 80s, with Paulides testifying in defense of his unit. And he has not changed btw, he's a Qanon stolen election covid denier type of nut right now on his YouTube channel (according to reddit. I am not watching this man's videos.) So yeah, I think his character speaks for itself.

Anyway, I'm tired of hearing about this guy and seeing 411 related content pop up around YouTube, Reddit, Tiktok, etc. Pay attention if you watch things related to "creepy and unexplained real life disappearnaces." I do not think he is a good person, I do not think he can be trusted, and I do not think that his work actually benefits the families of the missing persons in question. These are real people. He turns them into spectacles to push ~unusual~ circumstances and paranormal activity.

HELPPP i saw something similar on hinge, and i was hunched over the side of my bed laughing for like 20 minutes. in general, i don't think pranks with any of the bllk boys would go well (unless you wanted to be punted like a football, american-style) but i'm taking a risk today, so here you go:

sae sees through your bullshit in a peloponnesian minute. he has morning practice, three interviews, and a daily nap to get to, so what makes you think he has time for you to fake a car accident? leaves you on read. (brutal, i know.)

rin is mildly concerned, but he's too smart to fall for whatever prank you have planned. he'd probably reply with a sarcastic, dry ass response or a deadpan emoji. refuses to talk to you for the rest of the day because what if you actually got into a car accident? he would lose all sanity. tbh he can't stand it when people make light of serious situations even if it's just a lighthearted joke.

kaiser is petty. he sends you an official funeral invite titled "in loving memory of y/n." he personally designed it in photoshop and even added those tacky glitter rose GIF animations on the front. coincidentally, everyone in your immediate circle also happened to receive the same mass email chain with those invites, so you had to explain to your family, friends, and co-workers that (1) you did not in fact die in a car accident and (2) your funeral is not set for the 15th. (you never played a prank on michael again.)

isagi freaks out. he's calling 911/119, whatever emergency service there is. immediately calls you and nearly breaks down in fear of losing you. when you tell him it was merely a prank, he laughs in relief but internally he's cursing you out with every colorful name in existence.

ness is isagi but even more high-strung. there is no time to call the ambulance in his mind. he's already thundering down the highway looking for the evidence of your car wreck. calls you and screams ballistically into the speaker: "WHERE ARE YOU? WHERE ARE YOU? WHERE ARE YOU?" so yeah....don't ever play a prank on ness. it's for your sake, not his.

shidou takes you up one notch and sends a picture of himself in the emergency room with a cast on his leg and an IV drip. this spawn of satan took your message literally and decided to copy you and got into a real car accident. so now you have to take time off work and sign the hospital discharge papers because he listed you as his sole emergency contact.

nagi doesn't give a shit. he's already chronically online, and reo's played pranks on him before. probably texts you an "ok" and then tells you he's run out of toilet paper again, so you need to stop by the store to buy some.

reo matches your energy. he replies with: oh yeah, i've heard of that brand. it's the—*insert sound of trucks colliding and screeches across asphalt* you both had a good laugh after.

ok that's all i have for now. this is going to reach a very niche demographic, but you're welcome.

I get that sometimes you need to chill and stay on good terms with people who fuck with things you don't necessarily like and I consider myself pretty good at that but there is a kind of mind numbing loneliness to not really clicking with 99.9% of people you talk to. not every friendship or connection needs to be soul-deep but when you never really actively feel like following up on most of the connections you make it leads you down so many paths where you end up really frustrated trying to figure out what the cause is. is it the autism? am I truly an antisocial person? was I damaged and forced to grow up too fast? is such a thing a real phenomenon? am I too picky? I know this is bound to sound like reddit intj behavior sorry but aside from a small handful of people online I either talk with regularly or would like to talk to More I literally only click with professors and other people twice my age. helppp helllpppp someone helpppp

when i threatened to post matteoflavio chatfic i got eight likes which is an 800% increase from the last time i mentioned this ship so. none of you are escaping now. happy hamburg open final, flavio, sorry for what we did to your characterization.

[setting: the tennisphere has just rediscovered carlitos and luca nardi's childhood sweethearts backstory.]

bff: something something fic where the rumor goes around about alcaraz and his italian bf, aka flavio cobolli goes on the war path because how dare jannik sinner take up with carlos too when he's already stolen dating matteo!! how can he DO THIS to matteo. doesn't he know matteo's already been through enough in his love life. FRANKLY MATTEO IS DOING HIM A FAVOR DEIGNING TO DATE HIM AND THIS CARROT PUNK HAS THE ABSOLUTE GALL TO STEP OUT ON HIM.

meanwhile, this jannik/matteo thing is extremely not serious and not at all what flavio is envisioning (aka they're getting married and for some reason the wedding looks like the davis cup final). also possibly flavio confronting jannik about this is what finally clues jannik in to the fact that carlos has a thing for him. because literally everyone knows. except him. as usual.

no idea what flavio gets out of this other than extreme mortification when matteo hears of this altercation and the next time they see each other matteo's very gently like, so hey..... buddy..... everything okay with you lately......

ok anyway this is the classic optimistic fic ending that doesn't go all the way to the ship but lays groundwork for the future. specifically this conversation ends in flavio unloading on matteo about matteo like you don't always have to be everyone's older brother you don't always have to take only what people decide to give you sure it's great that you're always there for everyone but sometimes you have to stand up for yourself and say HEY I DESERVE THIS. (← flavio very good at telling himself hey i deserve this.) you don't have to just ACCEPT that you're old news in italian tennis and everything is always gonna be about jannik. YOU SHOULD BE WINNING SLAMS AND DATING PEOPLE WHO ARE OBSESSED WITH YOU!!!!

....which. i mean i don't know how dense matteo is lol maybe the subtext goes over his head and maybe it doesn't. but the cumulative impact is certainly like. ._.????

alacants: ok thought about this some more. key point is that as stated this story ends on a hopeful/optimistic note but not a resolved one, for flavio. i.e. he dumps the full weight of his unhinged perspective on matteo and matteo is knocked for six but not so much that he's immediately in feelings mode. (...consciously.)

i will give him a little credit and say he's NOT as stupid as jannik, so he does understand the subtext lmao and is like, holy shit. ok. well uh. and they have a nice affirming conversation that sort of talks around the crush part where matteo expresses GENUINELY and EMOTIONALLY how much it means to him to hear this and that flavio's really important to him. subtext being, i'm flattered, can we stay friends.

which. argh this sucks this is why he likes matteo so much but also ow. on the other hand, it's not like he actually expected a different outcome since as of a few days ago matteo was hooking up with JANNIK so. this is fine. it sucks but it's fine.

however. now that matteo knows.... he can't UNknow. and that means that now there is Tension. all of those instagram posts. all of those jokes-but-are-they-really. all of those CLINGY DAVIS CUP HUGS. now they are charged. flavio never brings it up again, never says anything he wouldn't have said before, but. matteo's dumb but not THAT dumb. he can sense, you know. when there is something to be sensed. it's like. it's evident right. right. (and if anything they're spending more time together than ever since SOMEone has gotten himself a BOYFRIEND he only sees on TOUR so it's basically like he's become invisible. -_- which. it's nice, hanging out with flavio, but it's also. charged!)

all of which is leading up to matteo hanging out with lorenzo musetti who says sympathetically, so... flavio...

matteo: you noticed, huh... yeah, i figured. i feel kinda stupid for not noticing his crush earlier.

lore: flavio's crush? nah man i don't think so, isn't he into shelton. no bro i meant YOU.

which.

oh.

oh. so that's what's been happening. to him.

so. ok. he has. feelings. of some kind. for flavio, who he's known for a thousand years, who... he guesses is over it? the crush. despite all those things he said. which, yeah, he's 23, that's normal, right. it would be crazier to expect it not to pass. so. yeah. that's fine. that's... fine.

cue matteo wandering around in the exact same dazed fog of depression as every other time he's gotten his heart broken fdljaf;jfkdf. flavio takes one look at him and is on the fucking warpath. who was it. he'll break their kneecaps. he had BOTH EYES on this entire goddamn tour he was WATCHING for signs of matteo getting his stupid big heart broken again because he can't help getting attached. and now matteo's making excuses and backing out of hanging out while giving flavio the TENDEREST MOST BITTERSWEET SMILES and someone is going to pay for this.

(meanwhile lorenzo musetti went out in round one and is back home playing with his baby, blissfully ignorant of the chaos left in his wake.)

insert entertainment at their expense via the rest of the tour callously gossiping like, lmao berrettini got dumped again huh, while flavio forcibly restrains himself from actions that would get him kicked off tour and matteo feels a lingering low-level humiliation. (with an observant few eyeing flavio like "so... who's gonna tell him...") cherry on top is flavio swallowing his pride and going to jannik like, do you know what happened. with matteo.

jannik: something happened with matteo????

flavio: flavio: flavio: (deep breath. don't kill him, cobolli. if you kill him you won't get answers.)

flavio explains that yes. matteo seems to have gotten his heart broken again. only, no one seems to know who was actually... dating, or hooking up with. so.

concerned nyannik: oh no :( flavio: so he didn't tell you anything either. jannik: [immediately betrayed by ginger complexion] oh um... we haven't actually hung out that much lately... i've been, um, busy...

(translation = i've been spending all my free time making out with carlos.)

christ. SOME FRIEND. but that's typical jannik isn't it. god maybe matteo really DID have feelings for jannik and he just didn't know it until all of the making out with carlos was shoved in his face. in which case flavio will kill them both. skiing accident. no one will ever find out.

Omd I love your work so much the analysation between Kaveh and Alhaitham is just so ??? (Beautiful wth I probably read like 99.9% of your work bc I just love reading the analysis between them) literally EVERYTIME you post I get so excited like it just makes me smile

Anyway if it’s not rude to ask, Ive read some of your fanfics about them and I just wanted to ask how you make them so.. accurate? Ive just recently started writing fanfics and do you have any tips?

Also knowing how much you analyse these two are there any like details about them you found out abt the pair? I would normally do it myself but im not even up to the Sumeru archon quest 😭

And another thing, do you have any head canons revolving the two or do you just stick by the canon? (If you do head canons i would LOVE TO HEAR THEM.)

firstly !?!?! thank you for checking out my fics!! and !!!!!! i'm glad you like the characterisation! :'''') when i first got into haikaveh, all i was doing was reading fics before i got to sumeru. i had ideas for writing, but i was way too scared of actually getting them up in full in case they were inaccurate, because i felt that i didn't have a great grasp on their in-game characters? (not that this fear should stop anyone - where would haikaveh nation be without the authors who wrote for haikaveh before kaveh was even released??)

personally i spent a lot of time going over their individual character stories and voice-lines, as well as constantly rewatching character trailer videos and clips where haikaveh are together onscreen, and also apart, so i could start the essay, and this definitely also helped me develop a voice for both of them in fic in terms of dialogue and inner monologues.

for me kaveh's inner monologue is going to be almost the complete opposite of alhaitham's, where kaveh's empathy comes out in overthinking, and is fuelled mainly by emotion as he tries to rationalise his perspective (in relation to interpreting alhaitham), whereas i write alhaitham's inner monologue to be more observation based, and where emotion is implied rather than stated - which i find is used in his character stories, particularly character story 5 where his past is given. although no emotions are mentioned, it's evident how essential his grandmother is to him, only there is no detail about how he felt when losing the last of his family, and having to arrange her funeral, and enrolling in the akademiya when he previously believed it to be boring, and the years spent after his graduation, up until the point where kaveh moves in - in contrast to kaveh's character stories which are extremely detail heavy in these regards.

there's a clear contrast between kaveh and alhaitham's experiencing of emotion in inner monologue, especially when it comes to alhaitham's grandmother's last wishes, as it's an impactful line about her wanting him to lead a peaceful life, and there's no further elaboration on this; the emotion is there to be interpreted, whereas kaveh will be explicit about his exact feelings at the time, and how these feelings change, or don't change.

for me, both are interesting to write, as kaveh's empathy ensures that he will be in constant motion, avidly aware of each shift of mood in any conversation, or aware of a thought that alhaitham might be chasing. if writing when alhaitham and kaveh are not in sync, then justifying kaveh's mindset and his interpretation of alhaitham can fuel the dialogue (whether it be typical banter or strained conversation). on the other hand, alhaitham's emotions are more subtextual, perhaps he'll notice kaveh beginning to frown when working, which shows that alhaitham has been staring at kaveh rather than reading, or something. i interpret his inner monologue as him being thoroughly aware of how he feels towards kaveh, and therefore he has no need to reiterate this when thinking - again, in contrast to kaveh, whose mood and feelings fluctuate depending on those around him.

those are just my personal approaches in case it's of any interest to you! if you're hesitant to write because you feel like things won't be 'in-character', i'd argue that fanfiction as a medium ensures that works can't be in-character as it won't be the game's canon; especially as characters can be reinterpreted for each person depending on the plot and the themes. in general, i'd say write whatever, and however you want, so long as you're writing something. you can come back and edit it later, and you may find that new ideas come to you as you start writing. so long as you're having fun!

as for things i like about them in terms of in-game canon(?), i would say that aside from the writing of their dialogue and their character stories, their arguments on the bulletin board posts around sumeru are so sacred and special! when you get to sumeru i highly recommend running around to find them! it feels very rewarding to click through each post to find alhaitham responding to each and every post that kaveh makes <3

additionally, there's the idea that as alhaitham accidentally created an aesthetically pleasing rug print design, with (supposedly) kaveh doing the same by creating a practical, affordable rug, mirroring each other's traits of artistry vs practicality (thanks to haikavehtimely). the devs being thorough in their haikaveh propaganda is so insane, but if i had made haikaveh i would be doing the exact same thing???

as for design inspiration, the idea of them resembling plato and aristotle in terms of their beliefs is rather interesting?? especially with kaveh talking about beauty having a whole form, in that it's a concept intrinsically understood! especially with their splash art poses in mind (which is written about in the haikaveh bible)

blessed be headcanons! i end up writing them into my fics, but i think the spaces in canon leave a lot to interpretation, so i think i end up working around that? a lot of them are domestic for me, for example, kaveh definitely has a skin/hair routine, and i think while alhaitham may not go to such lengths, he values cleanliness and has a lengthy bath time (alhaitham likes the smells of kaveh's skincare and kaveh likes the subtle smells of alhaitham's bath oils).

also!! that kitchen is TINYYY!! i think it's !?!?!? that alhaitham canonically had that research lab redesigned into a house, and approved a design that had TWO bedrooms, even after kaveh rejected the building?? i think he prioritised his dreams of a reunion over realistic living conventions and that kitchen is atrociously small, and kaveh complains about it all the time and clowns on alhaitham, so they have to scrunch up when cooking, or they establish a cooking schedule, which, a lot of the time, goes out the window, as they go to the tavern or get take away <3
