People I'd like to know better!
I was tagged by @ninjadepressed (thank you!!! i think the theme for me this week is 'sempai noticed me' lol)
Last song: Guilty Gear Strive - The Circle (it's partially my fic's theme song, along with Rock Parade from the same album and Maretu's SIU)
Favourite colour: yellow!
Currently watching: i'm not great with the moving pictures lol. I've been planning to watch Jojo Stone Ocean for ages but haven't been able to muster up the determination. Might try to watch Kakashi's Anbu arc in Naruto one of these days... hopefully.
Last movie/tv show: I think it was a movie called A Haunting In Venice? A Poirot adaptation I watched with the family. The spoooky elements are alright enough, and the mystery was alright enough, but I think the two halves of this movie struggled to work together in the third act. The characters were fun tho
Spicy/savoury/sweet: oooh that's difficult. I think mostly it's spicy (I just tortured myself with painfully spicy noodles lol) although maybe salty is more accurate to my usual cravings. Oh, but my cooking specialty is homemade ice cream!
Relationship status: super duper single
Current obsession: Naruto and specifically Kakashi, as is pretty clear from my blog! I don't think I've ever fallen harder into a work, and I've been lurking silently around fandom since I was a kid. If there's anything else right now, it would be One Piece and computer coding (game programming using the Godot engine specifically).
Last thing you googled: Multiple kaomojis, because I want to reply to all my fic reviews to the best of my ability but i'm naturally awkward XD. Before that, I was double-checking a few word definitions. Did you know 'nonplussed' means both 'bewildered' AND 'unpeturbed'??? those two meanings are close enough yet different enough to render the word nigh-on unuseable without aid. stupid-ass pretty word tbh
Tagging: @technoblade-apologist-and-proud, @swinginmakerbonkplaid

hello folks!! i have been rating nuwho seasons and it has been a while so!!! it is time for series 5!! also deleted series 11 thoughts because 1. i want these to be in order 2. i want to rewatch the series as well before rating it 3. i disagreed with my own thoughts
just my personal extremely unprofessional opinions mostly based on Vibes, so feel free to disagree!! but now! series 5!
1. Vincent and the Doctor (5x10) - SO good, i love that they showed vincent that his works will be appreciated, that moment was so great. loved the general story, too, and how the "evil" creature wasn't actually evil and how everyone was so kind it was very beautiful to me. also, i always smile when i remember "the ultimate ginge" it was so funny to me
2. The Beast Below (5x2) - really really really like this episode like. already just for the visual look, i love it so much. the story is good imo, and i love that they managed to save the star whale, all hail amy pond!!! the ending was adorable i think. will never get over how visually gorgeous this episode is imo
3. Amy's Choice (5x7) - SUCH a fascinating episode, toby jones is fantastic as the dream lord and at least i kept doubting like no it's this no that AND IT WAS BOTH!?!? yeah love this episode, also rory is with us!!! he's so great guys one of my favourite companions for sure
4. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang (5x12/5x1) - a great finale, i lovedddd how little amy came back and she helped save the world and the timey-wimeyness is SO GOOD y'all i love steven moffat because he does timey wimey stuff and i LOVE timey wimey stuff like all paradoxes and like going back in time to do something in the future etc etc is SO SO INTERESTING and you can do it in doctor who i need timey wimey stuff to happen even more in doctor who tbh
5. The Eleventh Hour (5x1) - great introduction to both amy and 11, the story is good + OLIVIA COLMAN RAHHH honestly i need her to come back to doctor who in a bigger role like even as the doctor or the master she's fantastic, but yeah i like this one too
6. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone (5x4/5x5) - i like the story and the scene where the angel is appearing through the video clip and when amy had to walk with her eyes closed like the forest scenes were honestly so good, ANDDDD THE FACT THAT THE DOCTOR DOESN'T HAVE HIS COAT AND WHEN HE COMES BACK HE HAS IT ON YOU CAN SEE IT AND IT'S NOT A MISTAKE IT TIES TO THE SERIES FINALE I'M SO INSANE ABOUT THAT, always LOVE seeing river song, the angels moving on screen kinda sucks, however i'm fine with that because of the theories that they move between frames or the crack affects their abilities, and also the scene between 11 and amy at the end of the 2nd part was NOT good like i've heard steven moffat regrets writing it tho can't confirm that, and yeah he should like it doesn't add anything to the story, it's creepy, deeply uncomfortable and makes no sense
7. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood (5x8/5x9) - it's not bad, i like the exploration of how humans can be very cruel, absolutely LOVE rory i was so sad when he died and karen gillan's acting when amy is trying to remember rory AAAAA, also loved many of the side characters, but that one silurian and the mum made me SO. ANGRY. like y'all won't even believe how much i hate those two god i was so mad
8. The Lodger (5x11) - i like the story even tho it's probably not the best there is, it's pretty funny and i do like craig ngl, i know people don't like him because of james corden, however i'm not aware of ANYTHING i have no idea what he's done because i like barely know the name so he doesn't ruin it for me
9. The Vampires of Venice (5x6) - i like rory and amy in this but tbh i'm not a fan of the story, i liked the side characters tho and was sad when the girl didn't survive she was really nice :(
10. Victory of the Daleks (5x3) - the story is okay i think but tbh i wasn't too invested, also what's it with churchill being such a hero so often like he was NOT that great of a guy and definitely not someone i'd really see the doctor being friends with, the scene where they're sort of turning the robot guy into human is great, i really like it
that's it for today!!!! hopefully i'll post series 6 sooner lol

Story time!
For @evcndiaz and the rest of you nosy bastards lovely human beings. 😂
This is the story of me breaking my foot on Day 1 of an almost month long vacation to Europe.
I was at Père Lachaise Cemetery with my ex. We were exploring and using Google Maps as a guide.
It had been raining off and on all day, and the stone for the pathways was super slippery and coated in leaves that made it even worse. We'd both been griping about almost falling multiple times over the course of the hours we'd been there.
Well, we were wrapping things up, but she wanted to go to the grave of Edith Piaf before we left (Idek who that is, bro), and Google Maps had been giving us all sorts of direction problems.
Well, we went up a few steps just to discover it was the wrong way, and we turned to go back down. And I slipped.
My right foot bent in half underneath me and I heard it crack.
Literally yelled out "FUCK!" in the middle of this ancient respected cemetery, and my ex and two strangers rushed over to check on me.
I didn't actually believe anything was broken because I've literally never broken a bone before in my LIFE. Thought the pain would be worse tbh.
But it did hurt like a bitch, and I couldn't walk on it. And we were TRAPPED. So the ex called security, but I was able to stop a man driving a security van while she was still on the phone with them.
Of course, my stupid American ass doesn't speak French despite coming to France, and the driver didn't speak English (he's valid tho -- again this is France). So we were like pantomiming at each other until I was able to get my ex over to explain. He then drove us to the entrance of the cemetery where a taxi picked us up and took us to the emergency room.
I ended up stuck at the hospital for almost 8 hours.
When I was in the back, the doctor and I had another fun adventure trying to understand each other across language barriers.
Turned out I'd broken my foot (it was swollen and painful af by now) and would need to wear some special boot while it healed.
But they didn't have the boot. So my ex took Uber to multiple 24 hour pharmacies across Paris before being told it would HAVE to be ordered because despite what the doctor said, no one would have it on hand. So then she came back and left again to go BACK to the pharmacy and return with crutches.
And I've been laid up in her mom's apartment hobbling around for the last day when I haven't been asleep.
Knocked a towel rack off the wall by grabbing it to stop myself from falling at one point.
ANYWAY! Tomorrow is Monday, and they order my boot. It can take up to 48 hours to arrive, but once I get it, I should at least be decently mobile while I heal.
The Normandy sidetrip to see @tarlosbuddie didn't happen. The Venice sidetrip to see @buckbuckley will prob be pushed back a few days.
And it's because it was raining, the sidewalk was slippery, and I'm clumsy as FUCK.

Series 5 Episodes 4 & 5: The Time of Angels & Flesh and Stone
Yoo they brought the Weeping Angels AND River Song back in the same episode? Damn this has gotta be awesome everyone strap yourselves in let’s gooo.
So the first question I’ve gotta ask is should the Weeping Angels have even come back in the first place? I’m very much on the no side of this argument and I think the cracks are already starting to show for them in this story, because they make the Angels bonkers strong. The whole “image of an Angel is an Angel” thing is bad enough, as now you could theoretically the Angels could just make an infinite Angel generator by holding someone hostage and getting them to draw them or smth. With the old Angels this wouldn’t have been the case, but oh now they can TALK. And not just through a radio, at the climax of the story they speak telepathically(?) with The Doctor, so they could easily execute the above plan and then it’s gg the world. Also wait this would probably make for a cool story copyright Daisy on this one I’m calling it “The Artist and her Angels” that’s a fire title. ANYWAYS to add on to all of this turns out if you stare an Angel in the eye for too long an Angel gets imprinted onto your mind? And you can’t ever open your eyes again? Why didn’t this happen to the Blink gang? Idk how this problem even got fixed but the Weeping Angels are soo overpowered in this story. It feels like there’s just too many additions to their power and it makes it so that now we have to rely on Deus Ex Machinas everything they’re on screen in order for the story to be solved. Alongside this seeing the Angels move kinda demystifies them for me, as a lot of these things do. The less known about the Weeping Angels, the better their stories are for it.
OKAY Angel rant over now let’s talk about River Song’s return and it’s… ok? She’s not a badly written character in this story per se, I think particularly in Flesh and Stone she shines quite well and she sprinkles in some very nice dialogue/mysteries that I enjoy. My issue is more the first episode where her intro is just soo overdone I feel. It takes us 8 MINUTES to land on the planet that’s nuts. But ye as I said, she’s v strong in the 2nd ep so I’ll let it slide. Saying that I think there’s something really off about the pacing in these episodes. In the first episode it feels like one big threat and then a cliffhanger, with lots of characters filling in the background, whereas the second episode just refuses to stop and let the viewer breathe. It just feels a bit too imbalanced in my opinion.
Also wow Amy’s character in these two episodes is… badddd. She’s made into the damsel in distress for pretty much the entire runtime, with both the TV Angel and the eye Angel plaguing her time here, and then she sexually assaults The Doctor at the end??? Like cmonn Moffat some shows are suited to exploring sexual assault but not Doctor Who. I’ve not watched Vampires in Venice for a while but iirc it’s just, not touched on at all in that story and that bothers me a lot if you’re putting something this heavy into your show’s series arc. Tho I do think Moffat in general struggles to write women well in the 11th Doctor’s era, but I imagine we’ll talk a lot more about that in future episodes.
TL:DR/Overview: Wow I did not like this episode as much as I thought I did at all. The Weeping Angels are warped into a different kind of villain that is just too strong for the world of Doctor Who, the pacing of these episodes is all over the place, and Amy’s character is written horrifically. I’m trying to think of a reason not to put this in D tier and the only arguments I have against that is that it’s kinda fun still, and I think Matt Smith as always is doing a good job. But unlike Victory of the Daleks where his performance is absolutely outstanding, I don’t think it’s so good I can bump this story up into C tier. God I need to go hide under a rock this is gonna be my most controversial review yet aaa sdlkjg. It’s D tier for me, tho I’m happy lots of other people can find enjoyment in this episode <3.

The Crays, only worse - part 3
↑ ↑ ↑ those butt cheeks tho ↑ ↑ ↑
Diana was tapping her foot loudly on the stone floor of Baldwins kitchen, hand permanently fixed to her hip and an angry face “now you two have sobered up” she hissed “care to explain the dead body Matthew and Marcus had to dispose of?”
They looked to each other and then back to Diana “Dead body?” they both spoke at the same time, confusion evident on their faces “what dead body?”
Fernando rolled his eyes shaking his head. He had personally witnessed these two evade all types of charges across the centuries, especially Fabian. Not even Diana’s motherly scolding was going to change that “the dead body. In your bathtub” she spoke, agitated they were lying
They shrugged, faces innocent as ever “Diana you saw the state of us, do you think we were capable of killing?” Baldwin stood up pulling on his jacket “as fun as this all is, I need to go to work”
Diana raised her brow contemplating throwing anything at him “you called US here for some emergency family meeting and now you are throwing us out before we have even had it” she fumed “we left the children with Ysabeau for this you prick!”
“the family issue at which we needed to discuss is no longer a necessary problem of which we all need to concern ourselves with” he said cryptically
“what did you do?” Fernando directed his question at Fabian knowing that glint in his eyes “you did something, other than butchering the politician and policemen”
Fabian held his hands up “I personally did not kill anyone”
“who killed who on your behalf?” Fernando pressed “I assume Jessica is still around doing your dirty work?”
“well I don’t know maybe she did maybe she didn’t do I look like her fucking keeper?” he stood up throwing his hands into the air “honestly I rescue this boy from destitute and this is how he repays me I just don’t know what I did wrong”
Fernando ground his jaw tightly not wanting to be bated into an argument about their past “who did Jessica murder?”
Diana’s phone was incessantly buzzing and she had ignore it for so long “what is it Gerbert I’m in the middle of something” she tried to sound professional but under the circumstances and who it was on the other end, she was anything but
“I expect you in Venice by tomorrow. I am calling an emergency meeting” He sounded every bit stressed
“you need my permission to call an emergency meeting since I am the De Clermont representative” she reminded him, not so gently
“Domenico was found decapitated in his home, is that reason enough?” he snapped “goodbye Diana I will see you tomorrow”
Fernando groaned, hands covering his face “You didn’t” he lifted his head turning to Fabian “tell me you didn’t?”
He smiled like a childish idiot “I did, is the world not a better place without the Venetian little shit?”
“I happen to agree with Fabian” Matthew eyed him curiously perhaps he could kill Baldwin and have Fabian replace him “so long as it does not come to bite my family”
“see, happy faces all around” he clapped his hands together “shall we all get incredibly high to celebrate?”
Diana looked at Fernando who had gone silent, praying under his breathe “as annoying as this will be for me to find a replacement, why are you so displeased with this?”
He grasped the dining table eyes squeezed shut “Domenico had free reign on Venice and the States, Fabian had Sicily and Europe. It was an agreement between them both to keep the peace. Not only has dickhead over here completely ruined that he can now freely come to America and annoy the shit out of me”
“Free reign over what?” Phoebe hadn’t caught on to exactly what Fabian did for a living
“Sales and distribution” Fabian took his last packet from his sock and shook it “want some? Family rates”
“your brother is a drug dealer?” she sounded shocked as she processed the alternate universe version of Baldwin
Fernando walked half way out of the kitchen shouting over his shoulder as he left “he is more then a drug dealer Phoebe, he is the worst man to plague the Earth. Take my advice and move out of the country”
Matthew felt uncomfortable seeing the look on Fabians face as Fernando left. The last time someone looked at his friend like that was Hugh, and he did not much like the idea of that “come on Mon Coeur we need to make arrangements for Venice” Phoebe and Marcus followed them out, heeding the warning to stay away from Fabian.
Unfortunately for them, now he had control of the states and did not intend to leave them alone. Ever.

(Made up bit heavily inspired by bit with much much better women’s rights) In England late mediveal or early renaissance time, how would I put a bridge on a very large and wide river that large ships like cogs and big carraks can get under? I’d like to keep to that time period as closely as possible (but with different women’s rights) but I realised I need big carraks and cogs to go up a river I need many bridges on. Would swing bridges do? What would those be made of in those times? Stone?Wood?
eGood to know! Presuming a world without magic...if it's late medieval / early renaissance, just use drawbridges.
Understand that your boats will have to be smaller than most seagoing vessels. However, that doesn't mean they cannot be quite useful, and it doesn't mean they cannot be sailboats; they can! They just need to be more slender and shorter--not just to navigate between the central support pillars for said drawbridges, but also simply to navigate the twists and turns of any river.
This particular scene from the BBC's Edwardian Farm series has an example of just such a boat: https://youtu.be/obIWqJlxniY?t=1030 You should watch it, even though they're actually just discussing using quicklime to neutralize the acidity of the local soils, and how they're importing coal for use in burning in the lime kilns.
The most important feature of the scene for our discussion is how it shows the size of cargo ship that would sail up a slow, calm river. The various boats that sailed up and down the Yangtze River, the Nile, Hudson River, the Mississippi, the gazillion waterways of the Amazon and more, all of these had a lot of river-based commerce. Even the canals of Angkor Wat had a great deal of commerce via boat.
In some cases, such as at Angkor Wat, they would have had stevedores (dockworkers) standing by at bridge causeways that boats couldn't cross. These workers would literally offload cargo from one canal boat, carry it a few yards across the street to the next canal's boat, load it there, and send it on its way along a different canal system. (You'd have to see how the roads and canals at Angkor Wat were built to understand this system.) In other locations, they would have boat-pontoons serving as a floating bridge that could be unlashed and moved out of the way so that cargo ships could cross, and there would often be regular times for these switchups to occur.
But if you're dealing with late medieval / renaissance levels of ingenuity, then winches, gears, capistans, etc, would all be a part of their canal system, with broad, stoutly made drawbridges being drawn up and lowered down at regular points in the day.
Some of these pulley systems could be animal-powered (horse, mule, oxen, whatever), or it could be a wheel that a man would walk along, kind of like a hamster wheel, such as the kind found here: https://youtu.be/s46qP1l39V8?t=628 Though it's a long zoom in, you can see toward the end there are actual humans inside thos wheels, walking slowly to raise and lower whatever needs to get up to the building site. A drawbridge system would be no different.
You can also use folding masts. Since you're not dealing with a specific real-world place-and-time, you can borrow from other eras and traditions, including ancient historical methods, such as the bipod mast: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipod_mast These were used as far back as the 3rd millenium BCE to sail up and down the Nile...which admittedly didn't have bridges to sail under, but the stability of the bipod mast made it easy to lay it down without overbalancing the ship.
With some clever hinges and pulleys and gears, a Renaissance shipmaster could make a system that would allow the sails to be quickly brought down...though to maintain forward motion when going upstream, they'd probably have to pay a lining service a fee to line the ship upstream. Here's an example of how to line a canoe upstream along a river from Far North Bushcraft And Survival: https://youtu.be/ZQ7940-M5mM
This is literally the same system used to maneuver canal barges upstream (and down!), powered by horsepower, literal horses, donkeys, mules, oxen, etc. This particular scene from the Victorian Farm series shows one such canal barge being used to deliver a load of coal, as they would've done in the Victorian era: https://youtu.be/Ccjyt7BQEVU?t=1374 In the scene, they talk about how it's "...a fly boat, going day and night; they change out the horses..." to indicate that these were in constant use. You can see how there's a path built under the bridge for the horse to walk along.
The barge would be manned and steered in most cases, since that's easier than doing it manually by the two-line method, but they'd still probably have two lines on the boat in most instances, in case the helmsman fell asleep, or there was a change in the current, etc. There would also be strict "lanes" for upstream versus downstream traffic, ideally with walkways on each side so as to keep the lines from tangling--this would be in use in areas with really flat slow/sluggish water, not enough room to use galley oars, not enough room to set sails, yet you still want your cargo to head downstream at more than a snail's pace with the natural current (ideal for big cities).
Small barges could also be poled like the gondolae of Venice, but again, that's small barges, since there's only so much effort poling can manage before it becomes nigh impossible not only to get up to speed, but also to slow down to make a turn, to stop, etc. So consider if your river is slow, if it's a series of canals, how many bridges there are, what sort of workforce there might be for loading & unloading, and for portaging.
To portage is to go around an obstacle that a boat (of whatever size) cannot safely manage. The most famous portages were done by the voyageurs of the fur trade in Canada, where they'd come upon a stretch of rapids too dangerous to traverse or have to leave the river they're on to go in the direction they need to get to the next river or lake system, etc. At that point, the fur trappers/canoers would get out, offload their cargo, and carry it and their canoes--sometimes for miles!--to the next navigable stretch of water...and most cases they'd have to set up camp when they got there, then go back for everything that got left behind, and haul all of that to the new spot.
In many cases in the wilderness, they'd leave 1-2 behind to guard said provisions, etc, either at the offloading site or the final destination site. But if you're dealing with a civilized/settled area, they wouldn't necessarily have to do that, but might instead arrange passage with wagoners / caravaners, the people who got paid to transport river-shipped goods between two points overland.
There are also the possibilities for canal locks (the ancient Romans had a precursor to the system we know of today) as well, but it honestly depends on how much that region has decided to put in the effort to dig and construct and manage them. If it's wealthy, has a history of innovation, and/or relies heavily upon river commerce, then it's quite possible. But most likely, drawbridges and folding masts are going to be ideal.
Just remember that those ships and masts are not going to be designed to withstand open-ocean travel or hurricane force winds, nor to carry hundreds of tons. River ships are not going to be the same as ocean or sea going vessels. For example:
"During the time of King Philip II's reign (1556-98), the Spanish galleon increased in size and capacity. For example, while the earlier galleons had capacities for 120 toneladas (Spanish tons), the post-1560 galleons tended to cross thresholds of 330 toneladas." (https://www.realmofhistory.com/2019/06/07/galleon-spanish-warship-facts/ )
Or: "...a typical American barge measures 195 by 35 feet (59.4 m × 10.7 m), and can carry up to about 1,500 short tons (1,400 t) of cargo." (from the entry on Barges, Wikipedia)
These might seem like good resources, but those galleons are oceanic vessels far too large and/or deeply drafted for river navigation, and those barges are modern ones meant for the lower Mississippi River. The latter are also powered by engines, not by wind, oar, or musclepower (animals or humans lining the boat along the riverbank).
Unless your river is huge--at which point ferries will be your ideal method of crossing, rather than bridges--your river-running ships will be small, sleek, relatively shallow drafted, will most likely have collapsing sails, oars for windless days, ropes for lining (even if their own crew has to do it), so on and so forth.
...You can still have bridges without drawbridges, if your river runs through a canyon deep enough that the bridge will clear the masts naturally, or your engineers invest in long, long, long ramps leading up to and over the central arch spanning the deepest part of the river...and invest in lots of riprap (rocks specifically placed for lining the banks of the river to prevent erosion, etc). Unfortunately, most rivers flowing through canyons flow too fast and hard to make good safe transportation routes...and really tall bridges exhaust humans and animals alike in passing over them, so...it's not very likely.
One last consideration: the river itself. Here is a snippet of a video I took when I had the opportunity to go on a Rhein River Cruise (Viking Cruiseline). The cruisehip is docked. It is not moving.
The Rhein really does flow this fast (up near Switzerland, iirc, but all throughout the trip as well), and it only slowed down somewhat at certain points. The banks in the city zones (and even much of the countryside) are lined with riprap (stones fitted and cemented into place to control the river flow and prevent erosion), and yes, there were a few canal locks along the route. A lot of that riprap was laid in earlier centuries, some of it late renaissance (and much of it repaired since then).
We were warned that if there was a lot of rain during our trip (this trip took place in May) causing a lot of runoff to flow into the river, there was a bridge downstream (near the Netherlands) where we might actually have to disembark from this ship literally cross the street for that bridge, and get onto another cruise ship on the downstream side of the bridge. Why? Because if the river level rose too much, this ship would not be able to cross under that bridge.
Now, the ship's top deck was disassembled to pass under other bridges. It literally had awnings and roofs on hinges that could be lowered to as flat as possible...and yet there was still a bridge they knew they couldn't pass under if the river level rose too high. Even with modern tech, etc, there will be obstacles like this.
So consider that for your rivers and your commerce. In spring and autumn, the water might run too high, perhaps even too wild, for safe & easy river travel. Portaging might be the answer. Or your characters might be crossing over the bridge which has an angry river crew arguing with the city guard about why they can't take their ship under the bridge (because it could damage the bridge, it's the wrong season, etc).
...You can also have droughts (oftentimes in high summer) which could cause the river to become too shallow for boats to pass in certain sections, or they'll have to lighten their cargo to avoid getting mired in the mud, etc.
And if your story is set in a region with cold winters, snow, ice, etc...the river might freeze. This poses a whole host of transportation problems, but then transport wasn't often done in the depths of winter, save maybe for foods brought from the storage barns of local farms. If the rivers don't freeze over, water travel is still possible, though hypothermia is still a danger.
If they freeze only a little bit, still possible...but once the ice gets thick along the edges, it becomes dangerous to try to "cut" through the ice with a boat of any size. This can include ice that is too thick to get the boat close enough to shore to exchange cargo and/or passengers, but also the possibility of ice actually damaging a ship's hull.
And of course merely walking on the ice is sheer danger, unless you know exactly what to look for, how deep it needs to be, etc, to be crossed safely--the idyllic picture of the Dutch ice skating along their canals doesn't cover the fact that many people fell through the ice because they hit a stretch that was too thin to support their weight. Certainly history doesn't tell us exactly how many perished, though logic assures us that many surely did--either idiots who didn't check the ice depth, or who were young and recklessly brave enough to be foolhardy, an unexpected warming of the water coming downstream thinning out the ice in a specific spot in the channel, etc, etc, etc.
River boat crews would be aware of such potential dangers, and would not want to travel in icy conditions if it was at all avoidable. Which brings us to living on a riverboat, and how to keep warm in winter when the hull is literally in constant contact with icy cold water...but that's another discussion entirely. If the canals are in constant use, the water "might not" freeze over because it'd be constantly disturbed by the passage of all those boats...but it also could, especially if a bad winter storm shut down travel for a few days.
Mostly, river boats would be lifted out of the water if at all possible before the river iced over (which the locals would know about). Why? Because ice expands, and it would expand horizontally into those hulls, cracking them. Water and ice are incredibly powerful forces that we often underestimate. This means that winter is the time when boats would be brought ashore, tipped onto their sides, the hulls scraped free of river mussels and barnacles and whatnot, sections would be repaired, the hulls re-tarred, and other maintenance issues tended to.
If river commerce slows or stops in the winter due to ice issues, then you'll have wagons and/or sleighs, etc, bringing in the goods...but again, your horses or other draft animals will have a harder time working in cold weather. Your cities will therefore want most of their goods brought into the city's storehouses before winter falls, if it's an area with harsh winters.
If they're just rainy and wet and miserable for the most part (*cough* the greater Seattle region (*cough*)...then flooding will be your biggest concern. If it's a region with seasonal droughts & monsoons...you could have a whole host of problems, but you'd also probably want retention ponds and lakes to help keep the river flowing--fill them up in the stormy season and let out some of that water in the dry season to keep the river at a hopefully passable depth.
Bridges (and drawbridges), boats, and rivers are all part and parcel with the equation.
One more thing, if your local region is building a bridge in the story (a common occurrence in the renaissance in many towns), it doesn't have to be a part of the story directly, but can be mentioned second-hand, like one of your characters can say, "avoid the Baker's Bridge--remember, they're doing repairwork on it."
If this is a thing you want to toss into the story (it makes your town feel alive, a growing and changing thing, without having to go into exhaustive detail), then remember that the architects will have hopefully taken all the shipping and transportation needs into account...but that section of the river or canal will be blocked by scaffolding, requiring everyone to portage around it. If it is a river split in two by an island, or it's a canal shooting off from or paralleling the main river, you'll still be able to have commerce up and down the river, but it will cause that river travel to be thicker and more prone to clogs, blockages, accidents, arguments, etc.
These are little details you can put into your story to give your world more depth without having to go into exhaustive detail.
Good luck, and I hope at least some of that helped!

Monday 26.. May 1834
6 55
12 ¾
Fine but dullish F58 ½° at 6 55. Goodish kiss last night. Comfortable enough at Queen’s head at Staindrop – not so cheap and good as at Greta Bridge – off for Raby castle at 9 26 there in ¼ hour- drove into the hall - by much the most imposing part of the story - the castle well worth seeing but too much modernized within generally and without as to the windows - no pictures worth seeing but six good views of Venice by Canaletti - castle and terraces stand on 2 acres - the old baronial hall seemed smaller than when I saw it from Croft 10 or 12 years ago, because perhaps now converted into a museum of natural history - some pretty good birds stuffed and shells and minerals - the housekeeper very civil - cleans the marble slabs and chimney pieces (the red porphyrin columns of the entrance hall and the imitation verd antique of the excellent of the dining room only scagliuota) with a mixture of soft soap and Spanish whitening and pear ash smeared on to the marble should remain on a fortnight at least and then be washed off with hot water and a fine soft brush to take all out of the carved work - the breadth of flat grass terrace round the castle to the parapet wall surrounding it, not much wider in the widest part than 20 yards - flagged way close up to the windows some 8 some 5ft bread. Off from Raby at 10 47 and nice drive to Bishop Auckland at 11 ¾ a treat little town – alighted at goodish Inn and walked across the great square to the castle, a handsome modern castle-like house – went over it in 25 minutes - in the dining room Jacob and his 12 sons by Ribera Spagnoletti (all but one by Pond) in as many of the large panels - Louis Cornaro his, son, grandson, and 4 or 5 great grandsons by Titian and 1 or 2 more pictures - none but a few bishops elsewhere and the whole house looked very bare of furniture - a picture in the fine large handsome chapel (roof very fine oak-carving in square compartments armorial) over the alter by Sir Joshua Reynolds - Xst ascending from the X in 1 compartment of window and in one ditto on each side, a Roman soldier falling or fallen to the Earth in astonishment and terror - not a pleasing picture to me - the 2 soldiers heavy and clumsy - the Xst not handsome and seeming faded as to colouring - an hour strolling about the park - very picturesque good castle-like deer sheds looking like handsome arcaded stables from the castle - the little river Gaunless (pronounced Ganless) enlarged and deepened and weared and paved with stones and spoiled opposite the house - it flows in a rocky picturesque ravine - the country around beautiful - 5/8 of an octagon battlemented old looking temple or seat on the opposite side of the river well situated near the top of the hill and commanding nice view of the castle - 5 open archways, rather pointed, like old fashioned doorways - a small buttress from bottom to top between each archway - about 4ft wide and 6 ft 6 in. high to the span of the arch - this might do at the top of the Conery wood. Off from Bishop Auckland at 1 40, pretty about the picturesque village (large village green or square) of Piercebridge - handsome 3 arched street over the picturesque rock-bedded tees but a small river just now, so little water in its bed - colonel Pulleyn has a goodish 3 story house on entering the village - no post horses - went forward (21 miles) to Cattericke bridge - off from there at 4 50 and at Masham at 6 55 - for the last half hour had grubbled her well just done before driving into the town. Ordered tea at 8 and strolled into the neat good church – handsome monument (about 1613) to a sir Marmaduke Wyville and his wife - 3 or 4 Danby monuments but recent and not handsome the church in mourning for the last of his house William Danby Esquire of Swinton who died about 5 months ago - then walked to the house to the about a mile + very pretty drive - walked up to the house as near as we could for high-iron-railed – off flower garden in front - modern castellated - joined on to a common sort of plain house and offices - not in particularly good architectural keeping but looking very pretty - the park struck us as far more beautiful than that at Rokeby - tho’ the entrance lodges not castle-like, and not at all suited to the house - back in about ½ hour at 9 – tea – wrote all the above of today till 11 25 at which hour F58° now in sitting room, fine day – coolish in the evening but very fine. On leaving Bishop Auckland found cousin gently came not afterwards incommoded.
£70 given by Mr. Danby over the arch separating the chancel from the body of the church – an angel on a cloud contemplating a cross. Greek motto at his feet which things the angels desire to look into good picture

Can’t Live With Losing You
Pairing: Joshua x You
Genre: fluff
Word count: 1,358
A/N: Half of me was contemplating on this one. Half of me don’t care because it was done. Oh, Joshua biaseds/stans, forgive me on the Venetian folklore part. I made Joshua snap in here. hahaha. But the folklore is really a thing in Venice, Italy. (I don’t know if it’s proven tho)
Now that I look at it, I realized I’ve put facts about the city so you can, um, imagine the places. But you can look it on Google of course. haha. So have fun touring Venice with Josh~~
Excitement woke you up early today. The flight to get here may be long but you are feeling fine. As a matter of fact you are ready to wander around. You will see him again when the sun shines. Sleep has left you and you started moving inside your little room just to contain your excitement. It is summer here so you decided to wear what you think is comfortable if you are going to be out the whole day. Minutes passed and you are done with what to wear. You sat on the bed and pulled out your handy journal and opened it. You wrote a few lines
Saturday, August 10, 2019
Woke up in Venice. I don’t have any ideas on how this trip will turn out, honestly. Joshua and I planned this for so long. I don’t care what will happen in the next hours. Whether we tour this city with maps or not, I will not worry. So, tour Venice… or get lost in it. I will surely have fun today.
After signing the entry with your name, soft knocks caught your attention. Joshua spoke your name quietly from outside. You opened the door and let him inside. He smiled at you before he pulled a chair to sit down.
“I came here to know if you are sleeping,” he explained. “Did you sleep well?”
You sat on the edge of the bed near him. “Yes, but I woke up early. You know how I can only sleep soundly when I am in my own room. But this room isn’t bad and I think it is pretty. How about you?”
He hid a chuckle. “You talk too much. Are you nervous?” He is clearly teasing you.
“It’s only 5:18 in the morning. Why don’t you go back to your room?” you shot back at him.
“Only if you go back to sleep,” he countered. “Did I interrupt your writing?” He noticed the journal on the bed.
“No. I couldn’t sleep so I started writing. You came right after I finished.”
“I’ll be getting ready for the day,” he said, distracted. “Let’s meet downstairs.”
Because you are all set for the trip, it took you less than an hour to step outside the hotel. Joshua came not long after in a sky blue long sleeve shirt which brought out his ebony black hair. This time he openly gave you a once over to see you better wearing that periwinkle A-line dress. It has sleeves above the elbow, a round neckline and a skirt that flows below the knees.
He reached for your hand, smiling. “We match,” he said. “Well, I think we do. Let’s go.”
Joshua walked with purpose and you wondered if he had ever been here because he felt confident with his steps. Did he study the map all night? Or had he been doing that before this trip? You kept your questions inside your head and followed him. You smiled to yourself at the thought of palaces, canals and the cobble-stoned grounds you are walking on.
“First on the list is to experience that,” he said, meaning the gondola ride. He’s right about that being a must-try.
“I’m in,” you said and you pulled him after you. After trying your best to speak Italian with the gondolier, you almost laughed when he answered you in accented English. The man took you in and did his business silently.
“Venice is so beautiful. It’s sad to know that it is sinking,” you mumbled. You passed several buildings standing on the water.
“Pity,” he agreed. “I never know about that. But I know of this folklore that they have here.”
“You love fairy tales. It doesn’t surprise me that you do know about folklore besides what you have in America.”
He moved closer, really close that not a distance between you and him was left. You felt his lips brushed against yours as you pass a bridge. And he pulled back just when you realized what he’s done. Your eyes fluttered back open, wondering why. Ever since you came together, you know how Joshua is not the type to steal kisses from you. He knows how reserved you are, too.
“What was that for?” you asked without any annoyance in your voice. The gondolier stood oblivious as he rowed.
“Just a silly folklore about passing bridges in the canal and couples kissing so they would stay together forever.”
You bit your lower lip to keep from laughing. “You called it silly but you did it.”
“I know. You can laugh at me now.”
The urge to laugh was gone. You shook your head at him instead, but you’re looking at him fondly. You find him romantic due to the reason behind the sudden kiss. Why would he believe in folklores? He is probably enchanted by the city as well as you are. There are so many things to see here and you did not feel the time passing. The Grand Canal gondola ride was over. The two of you are back with walking, turning to streets to avoid the glaring sun. You noticed how he keeps holding on to you. The butterflies in your stomach are all alive and well.
“There’s something I want to try. The gelato ice cream,” you said, smiling.
“Yeah, I almost forgot. We can look for a shop. Can you still go far?”
“I’m fine. Nothing will stop me from eating gelato right now.” Besides there are no cars here in Venice.
It was almost noon when you spotted a gelateria. Joshua suggested you both grab lunch first, promising you all the gelato that you can eat later. You took the deal and ate pizza and pasta in a restaurant which is half full. After lunch, he fulfilled his promise to you. The gelato only added to the reasons why you want to come here again someday. Meanwhile, Joshua kept his eyes on you. He is glad to know that you are enjoying this whole trip to Venice.
“Do you want to see a perfect view of Venice?” he asked. He didn’t have to ask you that, you thought.
“That sounds great,” you replied. “Are we going to the bell tower now?”
“We don’t know how many tourists are going there, too.”
“Alright, let’s go.”
A line has already formed when you got there. The San Marco Bell Tower could only be reached by an elevator. Many people come here because it offers the best view of Venice from the very top. Fortunately, the line isn’t that long so you stood patiently until it was your turn. Words crowd your mind, excited to retell what has happened today on your journal. The Grand Canal. The kiss. The gelato. You can’t wait to be on the tower now.
The elevator doors opened. You walked to the nearest window with Joshua following behind you.
“You can stand here and I’ll take a picture of you,” Joshua suggested. And you did. You took a picture of him, too.
You sighed, taking in the view of Venice below. The palaces and the waters look so breathtaking. The two of you stood there silently watching everything, holding onto each other.
“Where do you want to travel next? Dresden? Athens? Geneva?” he asked.
“Anywhere would be fine.”
“Y/N, I hope you understand what I was implying with the folklore. I want us to be together, like for life. I’ve been meaning to ask you for so long. Will you tour Europe with me? Will you be my wife?” he asked softly.
Your heart swelled with happiness and love. It was a quiet proposal, a private question and he is hanging on to your word as it is his only lifeline. The three-letter word seemed tiny and common, but it means a lot. It always does. It is the answer. Whenever he asks, it will always be the answer.
The sun is going down, its last rays reflected on him. The word is going down to your lips from your head. With that moment, you realized it was all you wanted to say. And the word was yes.

Relistening to 8th Doctor Audios: Sword of Orion
If you want the listen along, I’ve made a playlist over on spotify.
Part One:
Oh, poor Ramsey, he sounds sick 😟
Vortisaurs are allergic to normal spacetime? Interesting
Wait, what’s wrong with Ramsey?!
Garazone? Where have I heard that before? [and it’s not because I’ve listened to it before, it was familiar the first time too]
ATMOS SUITS??!
oh atmospheric, duh
Well that was needlessly ominous.
Weird that the ship is so untouched
What’s in there?
Nice job, Charley! Did she punch him in the throat? It sounded like it.
Even on the third time, the Doctor still surprised me
Garazone really is familiar
This new captain certainly is very keen, isn’t she?
Oh, they’re just... so happy.
I spoke too soon.
“Oh no” -- “Oh dear” [understatement of the century]
ah the classic “i’ve got a bad feeling about this”
{Sidenote, but I really want to do a post about character archetypes in DW audios.}
What is it with the human inclination to sweep garbage “under the rug” so to speak.
Ah, they’re safely back in the Tardis.
[Wouldn’t he recognize a cyberman ship, tho?]
“There’s something... cold about it” Oh Charley, you have wonderful intuition
Oh that sounds bad.
“You mean, one day they decided to leave, with all their carpets and cushions?”
Return of the Creepy Sounds
[I wondered why they left their helmets off if the air stank so bad, but then it occurred to me that if they’d left their helmets on, they’d just use up their oxygen supply.]
What? WHAT IS IT?
“Scanning for money. Scanning for money, scanning for money-”
Oh he’s gonna die isn’t he
“Oh my god!” -- “What is it?!" -- “A Blue box. I found a blue box.”
Oh yea he dead
Part Two
Yes, Doctor, run toward the screaming
Androids?!
As soon as she said that there weren’t an androids outside Orion with such certainty, I knew something was up with her.
“the handle doubles as a torch” - I have never heard such bullroar in my life. The Doctor has never been so practical
“One of us could go poking around the infrastructure with a big stick and a torch” - I think the Doctor would willingly volunteer for that job
MUTINY
You know, the first time I listened to this, I hadn’t paid nearly enough attention to the cover art, so I was completely surprised at the presence of the Cyberman
Interesting history this captain has
[I had also forgotten about the cybermats.]
“deathray” lol
I’m having such a hard time trying to figure out if it’s Ike or Vol talking, they sound the same.
Part 3
“I don’t know what I’m looking for|x.” Oh there it is
Okay, Vol is the nice one.
He’s going to die too, isn’t he
What’s beeping? Why’s it beeping?
Wait, they’re still on the ship? SO WHO’S IN THE AIRLOCK
“are you sure you didn’t major in cyberstudies?”
Oh no, they’re going to kill Chev|x. [idgaf about Grash]
oh god. the sound effects are so cool and freaky
NOT DEAD, IT’S NOT DEAD
a cybermat would make a cute pet though
Oh. Grash isn’t dead.
He sounds weird though.
Convenient that Deeva’s gun works so well on Cybermen...
Oh, Grash was a cyberpuppet. Not that different from being a tool, I suppose
I ship Eight/explaining mythos
She’s gonna spacegoogle him, isn’t she?
What else is Grash up to???
Charley had far too much confidence in the Doctor
ooh, clever Doctor, weaponizing the airlock
And clever, clever Charley
And FAR too clever Cybermen
Part 4
They’re all going to die aren’t they?
oh yeah sword of orion was a code name
Historical intelligence?
Hey, what’s the point of the cybermen communicating verbally? Wouldn’t it be faster to transmit the information digitally?
Yeah, they’re all going to die
Oh, but not yet, apparently.
Oh she’s an android isn’t she
I’ve never heard the cybermen scared before. I don’t think
Is Charley gonna...
Oh thank god she’s fine.
Trust.
The Stones of Venice next!

Breathe with me. Chapter 16a
Chapter 15 here
Liam's jet landed in private section of airport. Holding hands, they left jet and got into waiting car.
-So where are we? - Lina asked. She asked Liam about where they were going a few times during a flight but he said that she will find out upon arrival.
-Where do you think we are? - Liam asked with teasing smile.
Lina shrugged.
-How should I know? All airports are looking the same.
-We are in Brussels. - Liam said pulling her close.
-Belgium? - Lina asked disappointed. She thought that he will take her to Paris or Italy. Both countries fitted for romantic trip, but Belgium? She didn't know much about that country and couldn't recall anything romantic about it.
Liam nodded with a smile, her reaction didn't surprise him.
-Yes, but we are not staying in Brussels. We will drive to Antwerp from here. It's not far.
-I know nothing about Belgium so I trust you with it.
Rest of not long drive passed in comfortable conversation. Liam was telling Lina about his childhood and his brother, Leo.
He was getting relaxed more and more around Lina now. For once he felt like a normal man doing normal things with the woman he loved, even if he wasn't ready to admit it to her. He was really excited to spend as much time as he could with her and to forget, at least for some time, about everything that would come after the end of his so called honeymoon.
Upon arriving to the hotel, they ordered a room service, both exhausted after a long flight. Lina was nervous during all flight, expecting plane to crash any moment and Liam was doing his best to calm her down and distract from those thoughts. After dinner both quickly fell asleep in each others arms.
Next morning they woke up early and after breakfast left the hotel. Liam was wearing sunglasses everywhere to make sure that nobody would recognize him.
First they visited an old looking train station. It didn't really interest Lina. It was nice looking, gold and marble but Lina was never into architecture. Noticing her indifference, Liam laughed.
-Just had to start here. No trip to Antwerp is complete without seeing this building.
Holding hands, they left the building and headed to a stone gates. Next seven hours they spent investigating the oldest zoo in Europe. It made Lina sick to see all those animals trapped, even tho their voliers were comfortable and they seemed to be well taken care of.
-Nope, not doing this.-Lina shook her head trying to break out of Liam's hold. - I am already exhausted, I need coffee and to sit down.
Liam was trying to get in the long line of people wanting to watch seals show.
They headed to the exit and to the street filled with jewellery shops and sat at the table of closest cafe.
-Just one more destination today, baby.
Liam saw it in her behavior, he failed to impress her so far so he was counting on new promising idea that appeared in his mind.
After finishing their coffees, Liam lead Lina to the golden entrance of jewellery store.
-Did you know that Antwerp is a diamond capital of the world? - Liam asked walking through doors into the store. - We can visit diamond museum tomorrow if you want.
-I don't think that I ever heard about Antwerp at all, Liam. - Lina chuckled.-To be honest, I pictured other destinations when you offered trip to Europe.
-Paris and Venice? - He asked stopping by one of showcases.
Lina nodded and looked at showcase that was filled with necklaces and matching earrings.
A man hurried over to them.
-Goedemiddag. Kan ik u helpen?-a man asked subtly observing Liam to see if he was a potential client or just a tourist who happened to walk into the store.
-Goedemiddag. - Liam replied. - Can we speak English please? A lady here with me doesn't speak vlaams.
Man's smile grew even wider.
-Off course. Let me know if you are looking for anything special. Not everything is on a display. We keep the most precious masterpieces in the office.-salesman said after noticing Liam's Patek Philippe.
Despite Liam's attempt to look like a normal tourist, some things were still giving away his true status.
-Danku, meneer. We will let you know if we need you.-Liam dismissed him and turned his attention back to Lina who seemed to be captivated by the beauty of platinum diamond necklace and earrings and didn't hear a word from this conversation.
-Do you like this one? - Liam asked leaning closer to check the stones.
Not averting her gaze from necklace, Lina slid her hand down the glass.
-It's beautiful-she replied admiring the purity and simple elegance of it.
-Then we are getting it, but I would also like to check their office for more exclusive things.
-Are you going to buy it? - Lina gasped in surprise.
-Off course, why else would we come here? I would walk to the end of the world and back right now to make you happy.-he said and placed a gentle kiss on Lina's lips.
Lina returned a kiss wrapping hands around his neck.
-Well, then you need to find another way to make me happy. I can't wear any jewellery.
Liam pulled back confused.
-What do you mean? Off course you can.
Lina laughed.
-No, I can't. I did it back in New York because I didn't want to ruin our night, but I have an ekzema. My skin was dealing with the consequences of it for next weeks.
-Eczema? What's that? - confused Liam asked.
-I am not sure how to explain it. It's kind of allergy, I get it every time when my skin gets in contact with any metal for longer than twenty minutes. That includes gold, silver and platinum.
-You can't be real, Lin. Is there no cure for it? I mean how am I supposed to spoil you if you are allergic to eighty eight percent of the best gifts I can come up with? - Liam made disappointed face.
-You'll have to be creative then. - Lina laughed teasingly.
-You are just making it up, admit it. - His face became grumpy.
-No, I am not. I promise you.
-We still can get it and you can look at it sometimes? - Liam came up with new idea.
-Really? What's the use of having it if I will never put it on? Sounds like a torture.-Lina took his hand, nodded to salesman and dragged him to the street.
She didn't lie to Liam about eczema and right now she was grateful for having it. Despite growing closer with each other over past few days, Liam's lifestyle was intimidating to her. Traveling in private jet, luxurious cars and hotels and now diamonds. None of the things on display had a price tag but Lina knew that she would probably have to save for the rest of her life just to buy one earring from that set and she wasn't comfortable with this idea.Everything seemed to much, she couldn't explain it but she felt that sooner or later Liam would think that she is being with him for all that and not for himself.
I never asked for any of it but I know how does it look. I wish he would stop doing this. It just highlights the fact that we belong to different worlds. Maybe I should be honest about it?
Rest of the day they spent in the hotel learning more about each other's lives. Liam told Lina about death of his mother and lack of real family in his life, about very busy father who rarely had time for him and his brother. Lina told him about death of her parents in car accident when she was only three years old and about growing up with her aunt and uncle. They didn't have kids of their own and pour all love they had on Lina. She had a happy childhood any kid could dream about, her aunt and uncle made sure to give her all attention they could and did everything possible to replace her parents. Despite being very close with them, Lina refused to live with them after college or to accept any financial help. They did enough for her including paying for her education and making sure that she has everything she needs during college years. Accepting their help after college would make her a failure.
Next day they spent exploring rest of the city center. They spent a few hours in Rubens House. Only there Lina understood a difference between looking at reproductions and originals.
-Look at this. - Lina pointed at the painting that was hanging over an old fireplace that was used for kitchen needs back in the days. - It looks like 3d. How were they doing back then? And the lights!- only now she understood how touching and amazing a painting can be. No reproductions could ever show the true genius of a master, and certainly not images she could see on Internet.
On the second floor Lina spent twenty minutes by another painting that was picturing Queen Isabella and Ferdinand during their daily walk. Everything on it was very small but every small thing was drawn very detailed.
-How did they do it?-Lina asked again. - Did they use microscopes? Did they even exist back then? Really, I would go blind just after drawing half of it.
Liam tried to explain her the technics of old masters but her attention already was on antique locker, every small door of which was beautifully painted with scenes from nature.
In the next room there was a very small bed, draped with canopy.
-See this? - Liam pointed at bed. - That's how they slept back then.
Confused Lina looked at very short bed.
-But how did they manage to lay in it?
-They didn't lay, they were half sitting in it. See bunch of pillows? They literally slept sitting in bed and resting on those.-he explained.
-Carving is so pretty. - Lina almost whispered.
-Rubens was a businessman as much as he was an artist. - Liam explained. - He was a rich man as you can see. Most of the things we see here, in his house, are an art by itself and there was a very small circle of people who could afford them.
After seeing all expositions, hand in hand they walked in the small garden, Lina snapped a few pictures of Liam and they continued their tour of the city.
Very narrow sidewalks were filled with tables that were standing very close to each other. Despite lack of space, lots of people were sitting in those cafes, all facing the street and looking at passing by people. They were sitting so close to each other that Lina wondered how they can have any privacy at all. That reminded her of theaters. They all were sitting there like in the theater, almost touching each other, a street was their stage and people who were passing by were their actors.
Liam and Lina walked through this street and came to the square with a huge, gothic looking church.
-Onze Lieve Vrouwekathedraal. - Liam pointed at it. - Cathedral of Our Lady of Antwerp. - He explained.- We should definitely go inside. Rubens and a few other famous artists created their masterpieces especially for it.
They waited for guid of Chinese tourist group to show their tickets and Liam bought two for himself and Lina.
Inside the building seemed even bigger than from outside. Ceiling seemed to be over ten meters in height and the stained glass windows were filling a hall with a lots of light.
-I wonder how long did it take them to build it? - Lina quietly asked looking up at the ceiling and columns that were holding it.
-It's still unfinished. - Liam replied. - But normally it took forty years or more to build something like this if we look at Rome for example.
They walked to a wooden stairs standing apart and leading nowhere. Lina looked closer. It was beautifully carved but a center of composition were four female figures.
-Those are representing four races.-Liam commented.
They walked to a huge three pieces paintings hanging on a distance from each other. Even now, centuries after it was created, it didn't lose its beauty.
Cathedral was filled with tourists but a small area behind columns was fenced and a Priest led service for a small group of parishioners.
Lina was amazed by the beauty of altar and everything else she saw around.
They spent a hour exploring cathedral, statues and paintings until it was a closing time.
They walked through crowded street to the small square surrounded by buildings and sculpture fountain in the corner.
-This square has a secret. - Liam slyly grinned. - Let's see if you can find it.
Lina looked around but saw nothing special. A building Infront of her was impressive but still nothing caught her attention.
Liam stood on the fence of statue and reached his hand out. Lina grabbed it and stood next to him.
-You might see it better from here. - He grinned again watching her confusion.
-Would you give me a hint for what I am looking for or are we going to spend rest of the day here? Because I see nothing.-Lina said a bit irritated. She was tired already after whole day of walking and wouldn't mind a dinner right now. She wasn't a best person to be around when she was hungry.
- Card suits. - Liam decided to show some mercy remembering how confused he was when he was looking for it for a first time.
Lina looked around in all dirrctions, at all buildings but saw nothing that would look like card suits. After three minutes of ineffective search she gave up.
-I see nothing. Can we just get a dinner already? I can survive without finding it.-she almost barked. Her stomach was demanding food and not card suits.
Liam laughed and wrapped an arm around her waist pointing at tiles on the ground. She saw nothing at first but then one by one groups of tiles formed a heart, diamond, club and spade.
-Wow, amazing. Now my life is complete. Can we go now? - she got off the fence.
-Wow you are really hungry, no kidding. OK, let me think where should we have a dinner. I have a restaurant in mind but we need to change in the hotel first.
-Yeah, right. - Lina growled, grabbed Liam's hand and drag him to the cafe on the empty narrow street around the corner she noticed on their way to the square. She stopped by one of two cute looking tables under a tent and sat down. - I don't need a fancy restaurant, I just need to urgently fill my stomach.
Liam shook his head in amusement trying to suppress a smile and not to provoke her. Hungry and angry Lina still was charming.
A smiling waiter brought them two menus but Liam declined it.
-Hello-he said-do you have stoverij met frietjes? - he asked with polite smile.
Waiter nodded.
-Certainly, meneer.
-Very well, two stoverijes, Westmalle for me and Delirium for mijn vrouw.-
Waiter nodded and walked back inside.
-What did you order? Maybe I won't like it. I could honestly go for a burger right now.-Lina snapped.
-Don't worry, it won't take long. It's one of Belgian national dishes and a cherry beer. You should try it at least once. - He replied
-What did you call me?-she asked. Lina couldn't repeat it even if her life would depend on that.
Liam wrinkled his forehead trying to recall his order.
-Mijn vrouw? - Lina nodded.- It means my woman if to translate it literally, but also has a different meanings.
Lina pulled a phone out of her bag and opened Facebook.
-What are you doing, baby?- Liam asked.
-Checking the news. - Lina replied not averting her gaze from the phone.
-That's not very polite. I am right here and we could spend this time in conversation. - Liam pointed out.
-Nope, I need to kill some time and to keep my mind occupied until i have my food. - she said and began to read posts chucking to herself sometimes.
It was a new experience for Liam. Normally his dates would try to intrigue him and to spend every second charming him. But it was obvious for him that Lina got used to spending her days with him, it became natural for her and to his surprise, it felt natural for him as well.
Ten minutes later waiter brought them their order and Lina rushed to eat it.
-Ouch-she swallowed hard a first bite not feeling the taste.-Hoooot.-she moaned waving her hands to cool burned mouth.
Liam laughed.
-Slow down, nobody will steal it. - He said dipping a frie into stoverij sauce and sending it to his mouth.
Lina frowned but slowed down and found herself enjoying taste of the food. After finishing she sipped her beer.
-That's a good one. - she said relaxing into her chair and making a few more sips of fruity beer.-Can I have another one?
-Careful, baby. It's called Delirium for a reason. - Liam said with a teasing smile.
-Nothing will happen from two beers, Liam.
He ordered another round but even before waiter brought it, Lina felt lightheaded, her head was spinning a bit. She let out a silly chuckle.
- So good. I was really hungry.
-Ha, no kidding. I thought that you are going to murder me if I don't feed you In time.
Lina finished second beer, her cheeks were burning, eyes shining. She moved her chair to the other side of the table next to Liam and laid back. Liam rested his arm on the back of her sea and captured her lips with his.
A kiss was becoming more and more passionate.
-I want you, now. - she said into his mouth feeling his erection through pants with her hand.
Liam growled and abruptly stood up. He took a fifty euro bill out of the wallet, threw it on the table and pulled Lina out of the chair.
-Hotel, now. - Liam said in low voice dragging her down the street.

I hopped off the plane on LAX with my appetite and my chambray short-suit. The weather this time in the City of Angels was, to my surprise, bearable (knowing it’s the end of August and I’m a seasoned complainer about the heat). After a two hour something flight from Bellingham (thanks Allegiant!), we cruised through the also surprisingly smooth LA traffic to DTLA.
Our crib for the week was shiny and new, ultra-chic, with multi-million dollar view of Downtown Los Angeles. LEVEL furnished living is not only strategically located in the heart of DTLA, it’s equipped with amazing amenities (pool, outdoor theatre, spacious gym with its own room for Peloton - yes, I worked out during this trip), and did I mention the view from our 29th-floor suite was spectacular?! What made this stay particularly memorable tho,was the level of hospitality we received from their all-star team: impeccable with personalities bubblier than a chilled grapefruit LaCroix!
My memory of DTLA only goes as far as a mid-May pool party on top of the ACE hotel. But this time, I really got to explore the hood - and it was lovely. Of course there are those quintessential Los Angeles institutions (HA!): celebrity Whole Foods, Sweetgreens, and Bottega Louie but I obvs. skipped the healthy-ish stuff and went straight to the important ones. Cocktail bars - surprise!
On our first night, however, I was in the mood for wine. Natural wine. Upon a little research, we stumbled upon Garçons de Café, a rustic-chic French wine bar with sizeable library of vino that includes several bottles of skin-contact and natural wines. A glass of Le p’tit Barriot Syrah was poured to start the evening: full-ish body, bursts of floral and stone-fruit with just the right amount of tannin and spices too. It would’ve been a perfect serenade-me-to-bed kind of wine but nonetheless it was delicious even to start the evening.
Before I ran out of battery, we made it to the Nomad Los Angeles and caught a second wind. The DTLA chapter offers the classic Nomad feels: luscious, velvety, old-school bank-turned-to-hotel with a touch of California sunshine. Colours, textures and prints fill the lobby bar. Photogenic and poetic. Serving up the classics from the NYC counterpart, original, some large format (cocktails for 2), and even larger format (for 3-4,‘depending on your tolerance’ they said) libations, it’s one of those places to see and be seen, to drink and to be (day) drunk. Bonus point for the attractive staffs HA!
I had to come back to the ACE just to relive my youth one more time. Surrounding myself with hype kids, who, most likely would have released more than one EPs in their early 20s, it was adorable. It terms of the menu, It was more a tequila soda with a side of overpriced cold-pressed juice for me.
Conveniently located behind our apartment, is the Broken Shaker. A rooftop pool bar with bumpin’ music and killer tiki cocktails. Fun, colourful, rum and tequila-focused menu with late-night bar bites, it’s a perfect place for a nightcap, especially when you live literally steps away!
DTLA’s sunshine, full-blast air conditioning and fluffy pillows somehow made my hangover less dreadful and more manageable. I had two options: go downstairs and check out the smoothie bar, or go downstairs, turn the corner and get shake shack. I feel like this was an obvious choice when one is in LA, but you never know, cause a lady never shack and tell 😏.
We spent the afternoon exploring the jewelry district as we made our way to the Grand Central Market. A food-enthusiast Mecca with tons of vendors that are uniquely DTLA: from eggslut to oyster bar, Filipino-inspired rice bowls to cold-pressed juice and tacos (obvs), everything is available in one, huge-ass foodhall.
Right across the street from GCM, is the staircase that leads you to the other side of DTLA. The financial district (I assume), the Broad and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. This hike (yes, I considered this steps a hike) took my breath away, literally. My out-of-breath self rejoiced when I saw the Kogi truck waiting for us at the top - worth every step. Naturally, we made a pit-stop for the infamous short rib tacos, which, hit the spot.
*intermission* We went to the Broad, saw some Basquiat and Murakami, took photos of some Koons, almost saw Kusama yada yada yada skipped the Runyon and took nap...*
Fast forward to dinner time!
Honestly one of the things that I am most excited about during this trip was our dinner at Petit Trois. The middle sister restaurant from the award-winning, celebrity chef Ludo Lefebvre (who’s also behind Trois Mec and Ludo Bird). Offering classic French cuisine meets Los Angeles strip-malls. Juxtaposition at its finest and most delicious form.
The 35-seater restaurant is bustling with people coming in and out, basting in the aroma of butter and fresh-baked bagutte. J’ador - Je’ very hungry!
Both the cocktail and wine list are well-curated to accompany the Parisian bistro-style food menu. No fuzz no muss. Tartare de boeuf, escargot that’s bathed in butter and garlic (extra baguette), steak frites, perfectly fluffy, shiny and spotless French omelette of my dream, and I cannot stress how bummed I was that we didn’t order the burger. Tres bien, parfait!
This evening turned into a whirlwind of tequila sodas and bar hopping along WeHo that I honestly can’t really recall the deets 😏 but it was the perfect Friday night, thanks to my lovely companion ❤️
I started the last day in LA with a pleasant surprise. My hangover was a no show - honestly, at this age, this is a big win. I hopped on a uber to the art district for a cute coffee meeting with an old friend Blake and his lovely wife Ashley at the newly opened Verve coffee. The property is HUGE, it might as well be a mall. They also take my morning coffee experience to the next level with their “cocktail” menu: no booze just buzz. It was very fascinating and exciting - exactly what we need back here in Vancouver.
We spent the last couple hours wandering around Abbott Kinney and Venice beach. My goodness the people here are too pretty for their own sake. Jeremy even insisted to go to muscle beach for a little pull-up session. I was just there, sipping my CBD-infused lemonade, sticking out like the sore thumb - it was hysterical.
A hop, skip and an hour nap later, I came back to Nomad for one last cocktail. Still hoping for a meet-cute with a good looking, well-dressed, fresh out of Hollywood star to happen. It did not happen.
I took my hungry self to KazuNori, the original handroll sushi bar, just couple blocks away from the Nomad. The yellowtail and the scallop were particularly stellar that night - and the sea bass sashimi was also a big winner. I don’t know if it’s an LA thing or whatever, but the couple next to me shared six pieces of handrolls. I successfully stuffed 12 rolls to myself. Oh well - it was f*ckin delicious.
With three hours of sleep, I gathered myself and started packing. We watched the sunrise on the way to LAX, half alive but fully grateful.
I absolutely can’t wait to go back to LA. I mean, I didn’t get a chance to eat KBBQ this time... so Elay, I’ll be back!
Thanks again to Allegiant! for the fabulous flight and LEVEL furnished living for the hospitality!
