When "Clean" Code is Hard to Read
Never mind that "clean" code can be slow.
Off the top of my head, I could give you several examples of software projects that were deliberately designed to be didactic examples for beginners, but are unreasonably hard to read and difficult to understand, especially for beginners.
Some projects are like that because they are the equivalent of GNU Hello World: They are using all the bells and whistles and and best practices and design patterns and architecture and software development ceremony to demonstrate how to software engineering is supposed to work in the big leagues. There is a lot of validity to that idea. Not every project needs microservices, load balancing, RDBMS and a worker queue, but a project that does need all those things might not be a good "hello, world" example. Not every project needs continuous integration, acceptance testing, unit tests, integration tests, code reviews, an official branching and merging procedure document, and test coverage metrics. Some projects can just be two people who collaborate via git and push to master, with one shell script to run the tests and one shell script to build or deploy the application.
So what about those other projects that aren't like GNU Hello World?
There are projects out there that go out of their way to make the code simple and well-factored to be easier for beginners to grasp, and they fail spectacularly. Instead of having a main() that reads input, does things, and prints the result, these projects define an object-oriented framework. The main file loads the framework, the framework calls the CLI argument parser, which then calls the interactive input reader, which then calls the business logic. All this complexity happens in the name of writing short, easy to understand functions and classes.
None of those things - the parser, the interactive part, the calculation - are in the same file, module, or even directory. They are all strewn about in a large directory hierarchy, and if you don't have an IDE configured to go to the definition of a class with a shortcut, you'll have trouble figuring out what is happening, how, and where.
The smaller you make your functions, the less they do individually. They can still do the same amount of work, but in more places. The smaller you make your classes, the more is-a and as-a relationships you have between classes and objects. The result is not Spaghetti Code, but Ravioli Code: Little enclosed bits floating in sauce, with no obvious connections.
Ravioli Code makes it hard to see what the code actually does, how it does it, and where is does stuff. This is a general problem with code documentation: Do you just document what a function does, do you document how it works, does the documentation include what it should and shouldn't be used for and how to use it? The "how it works" part should be easy to figure out by reading the code, but the more you split up things that don't need splitting up - sometimes over multiple files - the harder you make it to understand what the code actually does just by looking at it.
To put it succinctly: Information hiding and encapsulation can obscure control flow and make it harder to find out how things work.
This is not just a problem for beginner programmers. It's an invisible problem for existing developers and a barrier to entry for new developers, because the existing developers wrote the code and know where everything is. The existing developers also have knowledge about what kinds of types, subclasses, or just special cases exist, might be added in the future, or are out of scope. If there is a limited and known number of cases for a code base to handle, and no plan for downstream users to extend the functionality, then the downside to a "switch" statement is limited, and the upside is the ability to make changes that affect all special cases without the risk of missing a subclass that is hiding somewhere in the code base.
Up until now, I have focused on OOP foundations like polymorphism/encapsulation/inheritance and principles like the single responsibility principle and separation of concerns, mainly because that video by Casey Muratori on the performance cost of "Clean Code" and OOP focused on those. I think these problems can occur in the large just as they do in the small, in distributed software architectures, overly abstract types in functional programming, dependency injection, inversion of control, the model/view/controller pattern, client/server architectures, and similar abstractions.
It's not always just performance or readability/discoverability that suffer from certain abstractions and architectural patterns. Adding indirections or extracting certain functions into micro-services can also hamper debugging and error handling. If everything is polymorphic, then everything must either raise and handle the same exceptions, or failure conditions must be dealt with where they arise, and not raised. If an application is consists of a part written in a high-level interpreted language like Python, a library written in Rust, and a bunch of external utility programs that are run as child processes, the developer needs to figure out which process to attach the debugger to, and which debugger to attach. And then, the developer must manually step through a method called something like FrameWorkManager.orchestrate_objects() thirty times.

THE CHISELER INTERVIEWS ANDY McCARTHY
Tumblr media
Chiseler: Please tell our readers when you began digging into obscurantist concerns -- these strange and neglected corners of New York history. Give us a sense of how it all started, and some idea of the scope here. Andy McCarthy: I worked as a New York City tour guide on the red doubledecker buses between 2004 and 2011, and Times Square was one of the highlights of the tour. The tour began and ended in Times Square — New York begins and ends in Times Square.  The history of the world's entertainment district is a big subject — lots to talk about and always more to learn. Plus everyone hates Times Square.  Elmo probably even hates it. So it was even more inspired to find the appreciation for the experience of it as it is now in the present.  Like going to a Starbucks in the East Village and finding yourself talking to the ghost of Joey Ramone, who loves the Tall Blonde.  West 42nd Street in particular was always a synapse-inducing subject — it isn't that it's obscurantist (except maybe for understanding the real estate chronology), but that there are a million ways of approaching it — it's the brightest neighborhood in America after all — the old theaters, the showbiz history, labor action, smut lore, the "cleanup" and failed redevelopments before the final wrecking ball in the 1990s, etc. Anyhow in 2012, film programming friends were putting together a series that revolved around the history of W. 42nd Street — they called it THE DEUCE, after the nickname for the block between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. The idea was to program a movie that once played in one of the theaters on the Deuce, and I would perform an intro monologue/ slideshow about the history of the theater. We did our first screenings in the backroom of Videology on Bedford Ave in Williamsburg, and then evolved to the proper movie chambers of Nitehawk Cinema in 2013, where as of March 2020 we have done about 80 screenings. Don't call me an expert but the pop legacy and damaged psyche yielded by the Glittering Gulch has consumed my research panascope like a large bucket of stale popcorn you can't stop shoving it in with gulps of fountain Coke during a matinee of Wolfen. For the last six years I've worked as a reference librarian at NYPL at Fifth Ave and W. 42nd (not the Deuce).  My division is US History, Local History, and Genealogy - we get all the NYC history questions.  At NYPL the resources available in researching each month's DEUCE spiel far surpass the amount of tips bagged at the height of tourist season by the Naked Cowboy.
Chiseler: When I was 15 or 16 years old, a suburban Jersey kid, I would occasionally take the bus to Port Authority with $20 in my pocket. It was a magical place in the 70s and 80s. Can you tell us something about the porn scene in those days, maybe its larger history, and how it relates to the evolution of your Nighthawk Cinema?
Tumblr media
McCarthy: I’m generalizing, but the porn business in Times Square seems a combination of obscenity laws and the real estate market (versus the city and state imposing change).  Obscenity laws had increasingly loosened since the 1960s and by the 1980s so many cases ruled in favor of pornography that the pursuit of smut peddlers evaporated like dots of old money shots on a mattress at the Elk Hotel. Sure Edwin Meese led a commission against porn in Reagan's Morning in America as a coalition of the religious right against the entire ethos of the 1970s, but it doesn't seem to have achieved anything other than beleaguering feminist activists who opposed the rampant exploitation of women in pornography only to find a black hole of political alignment with right wing morality police. Live sex shows and bestiality periodicals were then the product of free speech.  Meanwhile, big business had no interest in occupying or redeveloping the commercial spaces in Times Square.  But landlords held on to the old buildings and theaters — occupied by movie theaters, sex shops, etc. - waiting for a future time when the demand for Times Square real estate upped the value and they might cash in.  The neighborhood became a sex district mostly because these were the only businesses that would pay rent in the area — which most New Yorkers supposedly avoided. And it was the 1970s — the white middle-class had fled, it was a party town, the city was broke, its own redevelopment efforts continually failing on the Deuce, where the racial patron and hangout demographic was majority Black, and drugs and prostitution were viable business. But the theaters on the Deuce mostly didn't play porn.  The Victory (today the "New Victory") played triple-X and the Harem was a 24 hour porn box — but you had more opportunity to see First Blood or What's Up Doc? in the 8 or 9 other theaters on W. 42nd between 7th and 8th Avenue. XXX theaters were elsewhere in Times Square than the Deuce. Whether it was magical depends on one's experience of it at the time.  Times Square has always been a fantasy factory and the DEUCE movie series we do exalts going to the movies, and even when the experience back then was rough, most reminiscences of people seeing movies on 42nd Street is a memory of great impact.  We do not celebrate that it was so bad it was good (the same way we do not program movies that are "so bad they are good" — that crap is for bored minds who are less able to form an independent thought than the digital diode Coca-Cola sign at 47th and Broadway) — but it is a combination of place and experience in a matrix of moviegoing: there are many stories to tell about each theater, and the movies we program may take on new life in the forgetting chambers of Nitehawk Cinema. If porn ended up characterizing the business of Times Square when obscenity laws and real estate allowed it to, then no surprise — such is history…
Chiseler: I’m with you on “so bad it’s good” — a goddamn disease. I spend years of my life hunting down non-canonical titles, not with the tacky idea of establishing an alternative canon, but with the goal of subverting the very notion of canons. In other words, I’m seeking great films that establish their own criterion for greatness, compelling viewers to recognize them on their own ground. To expand your last answer a bit, would you mind dwelling on a few titles you’ve screened and tell our readers why you selected them?
McCarthy: OK — the DEUCE is a group effort. First off we are thankful for Nitehawk Cinema to have hosted the series for so long. I only do the intro monologue / slideshow on the history of a theater, while my co-jockeys — seasoned film programmers Joe Berger, Max Cavanaugh, and Jeff Cashvan — program the screenings, which are always a 35mm print, sprocketed by boothmaster Pro-Jo Joe Muto.  The 35mm signature touch seems to be one of the ongoing draws for the audience, who routinely sell out the 90 seat theater, ahem...  Cashvan puts together a list and Max tracks down a print (if one exists).  The selections hinge on whether the movie once played in a theater on the Deuce, and the availability of a 35mm print — the experience of history in the screening zeroes down to the technology too.  The movies are chosen because they have creative merit and yield enough for the viewer to determine if they are good or bad — or anything in between, which is much more interesting. Also we gotta honor the faith of the ticket-buyers and uphold any rep of the series, and not hash up some dumb time-wasting crap.  Some of the flicks might be obscure, like Night of the Juggler (a gritty 1980 NYC exegesis on the type of race and class tensions too familiar under the U.S. presidency of the hurrahed bastard) or Teen Lust (bizarre sex romp directed by that-guy character actor James Hong) or Combat Shock (Vietnam vet psychodrama shot in Staten Island, including the Nam scenes), and other flicks are not obscure, like A View to a Kill or Tommy or Luna or Runaway Train...  The crowds continually seem to enjoy a genuine going-to-the-movies experience; there is never any of that ironic insecure brainless hipster douchebag laughter that you get at some of these retro screenings that sizzles my nerves like hamburgers and franks on the grill at Grand Luncheonette at 229 W. 42nd Street next to the old Selwyn Theater — both places long gone.  I saw Lost Weekend at BAM one time and was surrounded by people laughing at Ray Milland suffering from delirium tremens. What kind of loser pays $15 to act like that at a movie?  Anyhow - those types don't come to these screenings.  Some people come no matter what is playing, others for nostalgia or a particular love for a movie, others for whatever.  No one is coming to experience the reenactment of a W. 42nd Street theater in 1982, which is not the intention — if it was we would just play grade-Z spaghetti westerns or Porky's sequels and allow smoking in the theater.
Chiseler: I realize that COVID puts a fairly long-term kaibosh on movie theaters. Where, if anywhere, do your hopes lie for continuing your work? Night of the Juggler ranks among my favorite films, by the way.
McCarthy: I am working on a book that corrals all the research I've done for the last 8 years.  As far as reopening movie theaters, I have no clue. That is up to Nitehawk etc. The series is a theatrical communal thing. We haven't all been in touch about carrying things through the quarantine because there is no virtual alternative. As for Juggler it's too bad the movie is super unfindable. But how and where we obtained a one-time-only print will remain as undisclosed as a Gambino wiseguy taking the fifth.

Dessert & Sour Chick.
At long last, I'm discussing the dish I have actually perhaps created the absolute most because Adriana began eating solids (which in some way believes that for life earlier and also just last night simultaneously). I made all of them this morning as well as certainly they appeared higher and also fluffy and failed to have extremely to deliver left alone in the oven for a while. Low in fats and saturated fat each providing, it acts as a healthy and balanced and one-of-a-kind alternative for dinner. Candida fungus, little intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and also other fungus and bacterial overgrowth indicate your small intestine cannot appropriately take in or absorb nutrients, causing food cravings, desires, and also irritation that bring about weight loss resistance. Your internet site as well as cookbook has altered my cooking area, my preparing food as well as our team are eating much more vegetations! If you don't know where to start when it pertains to making healthy meals selections - or even if you are presently following a well-balanced, healthy and balanced diet plan but require some new dish concepts - our company have united our 10 favored blog sites to resort to for fresh, periodic, whole-grain cooking (and baking). I know where I could buy affordable, yummy vegetarian creamy cheeses, yet considering that I am allergic to corn I can not possess most of all of them. As for the nutritional web content, consider this records (PDF) on standard African ruminant marrow", courtesy of Loren Cordain. Vegetables are actually a really good source of thread, vitamins, minerals as well as antioxidants so they should become part of a healthy and balanced and also well balanced diet. Additionally, http://lifestyleblog-hu.com/choco-lite-hatasos-szer-fogyasra-hatasok-velemenyek-forum-ara-hol-kaphato/ as well as fish excel sources of potassium, yet the blood potassium is going to filtrate out in to one's cooking tool. Recently, I proclaimed my passion of midwest delightful corn and because of this, I obtained a bunch requests for additional methods to use corn while this is actually in peak time. My target was actually 10 minutes prep, as well as I generally clock in at around 7 or 8 minutes (when I have my cooking food game skin on!). The vegetables listed below for the beating was initially briefly prepared on the stovetop (or else they obtain dried out in the stove and also do not prepare as carefully). Very seriously ... as somebody which deals with packing well-balanced lunch times (and a shortage from forethought!), this is actually great. On a much a lot less serious note, portion of ending up being vegetarian was actually negligence - I regularly hated cooking meat ... the cleanup ... questioning if this is actually performed yet ... Our document is him consuming healthy vegetarian dinner for 2 weeks without noticing. I fought with an eating condition as well as presumed that eating healthy was actually if the package deal claimed fat-free, sugar-free, etc. as well as like I pointed out package deal! You will definitely have even more energy and also stamina, you'll heal your body system naturally with the phytochemicals and also well-balanced fats and also healthy proteins in these meals, and also you might view your state of mind, memory, and intellectual function improve too. I was therefore happy to review these and flee off consuming evident tossed salad and also rice spaghetti. So I thought it may be exciting to highlight a few of things our team have actually been cooking and also eating this week at the beach front along with a few things that our experts would certainly possess been cooking as well as eating if our company had additional opportunity below on our little vacay. Yes, there are actually valid reasons to appreciate raw plants in your diet regimen, but I do not assist the strategy as an action or exclusionary guideline for consuming Humans have actually been actually preparing for over a hundred 1000 years Some nutrients are enhanced through warm. Likewise, if you think your stove operates very hot, I would certainly suggest obtaining an over thermostat to be sure as that could surely help make a distinction. For me, the work associated with food preparation had not been difficult, but did call for analysis and re-reading recipes, and preparing calculated laundry list. Explore fun, healthy substitutes for your favorite meals that are going to help you far better meet your macros. I more than happy I discovered your website due to the fact that I am attempting to launch and ease on my own from these uncontrollable tendencies and merely reside my lifestyle caring well-balanced meals. Your body will promptly adapt to your new, far healthier consuming strategy, and you will certainly finish the purify emotion refreshed, light as well as healthy and balanced. After browning the chick upper legs in sets, I browned the pearl onions in the bacon oil combineded with the fat coming from the hen thighs. The food items movement could not exist without everyone managing to take home new, local area produce as well as make a great tasting dish coming from that. The process of in fact preparing food is actually one of the most private method our experts can associate with the food movement. Chef Shortcuts is actually a new once a week cooking set on HuffPost Flavor where I will definitely inquire a number of the globe's ideal chefs to discuss one fantastic suggestion, one food preparation procedure they have actually learned in all their years in qualified kitchen areas. While investigating simple facts about Hambāgu on Japanese Wiki, I knew that there is a United States version of hamburger steak and that is actually extremely just like a dish contacted Salisbury Steak, both of which I have actually never made an effort just before. The recipe was actually coming from a wonderful small dining establishment in Tallinn, and also featured flambeing the deep-fried chicken livers (I nearly melted the cooking area down!), preparing a batch of raisin syrup to flavour the paté (utilized the cooked raisins for a pleasant pie eventually) and after that pushing the entire thing with a fine net filter (took permanently!). Previous attempts have actually left me believing a bit dissatisfied, like I was actually just eating a well-balanced dessert that tasted like avocado and cacao grain. All your dishes would be nice to invite print ... I have no idea how you could possibly formulate a lot more!! Examine the instructions on the turkey package; that is actually most likely that you will not have to clear away the tie unless you are actually preparing the chicken at a really high temperature. Love her concepts and showing our company her food preparation approaches and thoroughly delight in all the recipes that I have made an effort. Stella: Corn carbohydrate is amidon in French, or even Maizena (one might utilize white potato carbohydrate also), as well as corn syrup is actually blood sugar. I used an actors iron pot to cook all of them in and also I needed quickly to learn channel to reduced warm (unless you like singed sides) finished in the stove. I started with a classic corn chowder making use of blended and also whole clean pieces, onion, dairy, cream, and also garlic but included some jalapeño as well as chili powder for flavor and used cooked black as well as tiny red grains rather than potatoes for bulk. If I were actually the type of person which requested for healthy and balanced chocolate pubs as well as superfood smoothie combines for my birthday celebration (pointer: I am), I will ask for these classy pretties.

How Children Learn
How do children learn? How does your child learn? Like circles in a Venn diagram the answers to these questions overlap, but not entirely.
Every child is unique and though what you'll read below applies in general, it's vital that you take the time to observe your child's play and see what works for them. You'll be surprised what you learn.
NOTE: This is a new guide and a work in progress. I'd love to know what you think and what else you'd like to see included. Please leave a comment below with your thoughts.

Play
Children learn through play
Children learn through doing. They learn through experimentation and discovery. For babies, simply exploring their environment and interacting with others provides plenty of stimulation. And they don't need any toys. A simple treasure basket is more than enough.
If you have a toddler, heuristic play is the place to start. Explore materials and their properties. This is the age of the repetitive experiment. Read this post on schemas to learn more.
Of course, we don't learn everything through play. You don't have to climb into the lions' enclosure at the zoo to find out that it's dangerous. We learn some things
Theories of developement
How do children learn? We start with a very brief overview of some of the most well-known theories.
The Blank Slate
Some early thinkers believed that children's minds were empty vessels to be filled up by the parent or teacher. This view is of the adult as the instructor. The child simply absorbs the information.
Behaviourism
Learning takes place when behaviour is reinforced by reward or punishment. A squirrel releases a nut by pressing a lever. Each time he succeeds, the behaviour is reinforced. He is more likely to do it next time. He has learnt.
Teachers used to punish bad behaviour to discourage it. Today's educators prefer to encourage good behaviour instead by rewarding it. Welcome to the land of the sticker chart.
Constructivism
Constructivists believe that we learn when our experiences don't match our expectations. A baby dropping food from a high chair expects it to stay on the floor. But what if she drops a bouncy ball? Or an egg? An unexpected result! This is new information that has to be added to the mental model of 'what happens when I drop things'.
If you're a constructivist, you don't teach. You offer novel experiences that will challenge your child's assumptions. Let them make discoveries and test them out.
Socio-constructivism
This is the idea that children construct their knowledge in collaboration with others. The adult asks probing questions. The child is challenged to test their assumptions against the new information.
Which approach makes the most sense to you? Do you use all of them with your child or is there one in particular which resonates more?
As a teacher, parents often ask me about their child's development: How are they doing? What is normal? What comes next? What can I do to help?
The problem, of course, is that children develop at different rates and excel in different ways. It's perfectly normal for a four-year-old to make recognisable marks on a page, but you'll also find plenty of two-year-olds who can do it too.
Unless you've been a teacher or had several children, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that a child is behind. You meet a much younger child and they are already ahead of your own.
If you understand a little theory, it protects you from these worries and gives you the confidence you need to offer the right experiences to extend your child's learning.
Stages of play
Does your child like to play alone? Or do they enjoy engaging with others?
The answer has as much to do with age as with personality type.
One influential idea is that as children mature they progress through stages of play. The theory was originally proposed by Mildred Parten, an American researcher.
Unoccupied play – This first stage is not really play at all. The child simply stands, observing.
Solitary play – Common in toddlers. You'll often see them playing alone, uninterested in what others are doing.
Onlooker play - Your child watches others play, without joining in. They may discuss the play but they don't take part.
Parallel play - This is play alongside others, enjoying the same activity, but without interacting. Think of two children both building with blocks but not communicating.
Associative play – Children start to talk to each other about their play. They share their excitement, but there is no formal structure.
Cooperative play – At this, the highest stage, children organise their play. Games have rules and each child has a role.
It's clear that there's a progression from the first stage to the last, but the theory has its critics. Children don't seem to progress through the stages in a linear way. They can be onlookers one day and participants the next. Much of this has to do with the familiarity of their playmates.
Can you see how the theory of constructivism fits well with the earlier stages? Children play alone and make their own discoveries. And the higher levels are socio-constructivist. Children learn by playing together and from each other.
What kinds of play does your child usually engage in? Do they play at a higher stage when in familiar company? You can't force your child to play at a 'higher' level than they are ready for, but by sitting alongside them, you can give them the confidence to try something new.
The Zone of Proximal Development
How involved do you get in your child's play?
Do you leave them to it? Do you jump in and show them how it's done so they can 'do it right'? Perhaps you start them off with a provocation (see our blog for more on this) and retreat to a safe distance?
Imagine you are watching your child build a tower. They choose the simplest way - stacking one block on top of another. They then decide to make it wider. A second, parallel tower goes up, abutting the first. Five or six stories up these two constructions start to diverge, teeter and topple. As adults, we know that a cross-piece was needed, something to span the two towers and hold them together.
It would be easy to intervene and supply the missing piece. But how much would your child learn? Or, like the constructivists we learnt about on Day 1, you could leave your child to figure it out for herself.
There is, as you may have guessed, a third way. The difference between what your child can do independently and what they can accomplish with support is known as the Zone of Proximal Development.
How much you help is a matter of judgement. As little as possible, ideally. You can't learn for a child; they have to do it themselves. But you can certainly give them a nudge. It is often enough simply to ask a question or to draw their attention to the crucial feature of a problem.
Observe your child at play. At times when she seems to get stuck, try to think of ways to help without giving the answer. What's the smallest intervention you can make that will still get the result? It takes practice to get this right, but it's worth the trouble. You can really accelerate your child's learning - and you'll both have fun doing it.
N.B. This is not a strategy to use all the time. Children need time to themselves.
Spaced repetition
Did you cram for your exams? Did you stay up late the night before trying to learn it all in one heroic push? How much of that subject-matter do you remember now?
That's because laying down memories doesn't work that way.
Our brains remember best through repeated exposure. It's called spaced repetition, and the idea is that you revisit a topic several times over a period of months.
Preschoolers thankfully don't have to sit exams, but there's still plenty for them to learn. Letters, numbers and colours, for example. However, I'm not advocating flashcards or rote memorisation. At this age, it's all done through play. The trick is to offer regular opportunities to practice.
For example, if I wanted to help my daughter recognise the first letter in her name, we could try the following:
- Roll out long strips of play-dough and curl it into the shape of a 'C'
- Potato print 'C'
- Set up a pretend doctor's surgery and call out patient names from the appointment list (guessing from the initial letter)
- Label objects in the house that begin with 'c'
- Fish for the letter 'C' using a magnetic fishing rod and magnetic letters
- Eat alphabet spaghetti
Not all these are play-focused, perhaps, but I hope you can see that repeated exposure doesn't have to mean repetitive. Just make sure you revisit the topic regularly.
Keep it fun and the learning will be effortless.
Help your child develop a growth mindset
One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is the belief that they are a good learner and that, with hard work, it is possible to become smarter.
If you think that intelligence is fixed, self-improvement is futile. This leads to feelings of helplessness. Worse still, if you have been told you are clever, you become less likely to take risks and try new things. You are afraid to fail as you will lose your cherished status.
However, if you have what is called a growth mindset, you see intelligence as malleable. You love learning for its own sake and are less attached to outcomes. You do your best. You don't believe that failure highlights some fundamental flaw in your character. You'll try again next time. You'll get better.
Do you have a growth mindset? Or is yours more fixed? Do you pass on these beliefs to your child by the way you speak to them? What could you do to make sure that your child goes to school ready to learn, willing to try and happy to fail?
Ask good questions
How do you learn best? When you get a new gadget, do you read the instruction manual or ask a friend? Or do you just fiddle about with it until you figure out how it works?
Children are the same. They like to experiment, to explore and to destruction test. They learn by doing. It's why I chose The 100 Toys Guide to Independent Play to be our first book. Having the confidence to work things out for yourself is vital.
You have to learn to see. What is this new situation? Based on what I already know, what's the most likely answer? What's the quickest, most efficient way to find out?
Being good at this comes down to asking yourself the right questions. As adults, we have learnt to do this, but children need a little help. Your role is simple. Ask good questions. Why do you think your tower toppled over? What could you do to make it stronger next time? Are some blocks better than others for building sturdy towers? Why is that? If you could make your own blocks, how would you make them better?
This kind of questioning encourages critical thinking, the undisputed superpower for children and adults alike.
The importance of observing your child’s play
Of all the topics we cover in this post, the ability to observe your child is the most impactful.
Pay attention to what they are doing. Really look. Sit in silence for a few minutes and just watch them play.
A two-year-old might repeat the same action over and over again. A train going through a tunnel, a doll wrapped in a blanket. Even if you aren't interested in the theory behind their actions, in this case schema play, you'll learn a lot simply by watching and assessing. What can my child do? What other experiences could I offer that present the same challenges? Can I extend the learning by offering new materials or a different context?
Through your observations, you are looking for ways to help your child make new connections.
A five-year-old who loves snakes and ladders and using a 100 square might enjoy playing battleships. The grid is still 10 x 10 but the focus is on co-ordinates. This might then lead to crosswords, draughts and programmable robots. From there it's only a small leap to simple coding with software like Scratch.
But if you weren't looking, if you didn't notice that your child was interested in grids, none of this can happen.
Take five minutes now and watch your child play. What will you observe? Where might it lead?
The teachable moment
There are times when we are more open to learning than others.
There are times when we are going through the motions, getting the job done, but there are others when we are full of curiosity, eager to see what happens next.
And then something happens. Our current understanding is not enough to solve the problem. We get stuck. But we really want to overcome this hurdle. It's something we care about.
We have arrived at the teachable moment.
You might be struggling to help your child understand the concept of 'counting on'. Nothing you've tried works. But now you're playing a board game and it's fun! Your son is in the lead and he wants to move the pieces himself. He's ready to learn. In this magical moment he's receptive to ideas he wouldn't previously engage with. And so you step in and something clicks in his mind. He has made a connection and the lesson is complete.
Where are you trying to get to?
We enjoy visiting Kew Gardens, a beautiful botanical garden here in London. There’s a log trail at the far end that the children love but it’s half-an-hour’s walk.
We try to take the straightest route to the logs because the children get very tired by the end. It’s not much fun carrying two exhausted children for over a mile back to the car, with two more in the buggy complaining that they’d rather be held.
On this occasion, as often happens, we are waylaid by Interesting Things.
It takes twenty minutes just to get inside. The children decide that the base of the tree next to our parked car makes a wonderful bath for snails, so they spend ages digging around in the mud with sticks. They could stay there all day.
No sooner are we inside than we discover badgers’ setts, trees to climb and sticks to collect. We’ve been there an hour and we are less than fifty yards from the entrance.
What to do? The logs are on the far side of the gardens. Do we remind the children that they'd like to get to the trail, cajole them to keep walking and insist that they avoid distractions along the way? For what? So that they can do exactly the same thing when they reach the log trail (i.e. have fun and do something interesting)?
What do we gain by uprooting them from their play and insisting we get going?
And what do we lose?
Set a good example
‘Try your best.'
'Have a go. Don't give up.'
'Don't just sit around watching television, go out and find something fun to do.'
'See if you can work it out for yourself.'
We've all said these things to our children. But do we truly embody these values ourselves? What do our children see us do all day? This sets the pattern for their attitude to learning as much as any well-considered activity.
My children rarely see me write. I work from a laptop. I tell the five-year-old to sit down and practise his handwriting, but if he thinks that writing is no use to a grown-up, what incentive does he have to do it?
By far the best way to get your child to do something is for them to see you doing it.
Set a good example. Have an enquiring mind. Try to find things out, or even better, work them out for yourself. Model good behaviour and make it explicit. Make sure your child understands that you're doing it.
You'll be laying down good habits for life.
Fewer toys = more focus
I bet you've heard us say this one before: children have too many toys.
Too many toys means too much choice. Too many toys means too much mess. Children can't focus on on the task at hand. They flit from one activity to another, never sticking with anything long enough to deepen their understanding.
The answer?
Offer more opportunities for exploration. Cut down distractions. Present one interesting activity at a time. Better still, let your child create their own fun. They know where all the interesting bits are at home. The drawer full of string and ribbons, the cupboard where they can find an old shoe box.
Embrace boredom.
Don't give in at the first signs of rebellion. Tough it out. In the long run, you're making life easier for yourself. You are bringing up a confident, creative self-starter. Someone who will thrive in the 21st Century, where there are no jobs for life, where reinvention has become the norm.
Plan-do-review
Do you ever ask your child what they plan to do today? What they will play with? Which materials they will use? What they hope to achieve?
Simply by asking these questions, you help imbue your child's play with a sense of purpose. They become more focused and stay on-task for longer.
That's not to say that they have to stick with their chosen activity for the whole session, only that they have to start it.
Asking children how they plan to spend their day is a feature of the High/Scope approach, a preschool programme developed in the States. It's well worth looking up if you get the chance.
The counterpart to planning is the review.
How did the play go? Did you make the thing you planned to? Was it a success? What would you do differently next time?
Can you see how drawing your child's attention to their play helps them to be more intentional about their choices and can dramatically increase the amount they learn?
Give it a try today. Keep it light-hearted. There's no need for a 20-minute mission debrief. Just a couple of questions are all you need to get started.
We learn when we do new things
I bet you remember with crystal clarity - and more than a touch of revulsion - what a copper coin tastes like on your tongue. But you probably haven't tried it since you were two or three years old. The early years of childhood are a time for experimentation and fun, of deep learning and engagement. But when school starts, we can fall into the trap of focusing on traditional subjects. There is less time to explore and pursue new interests. Life is less fun. As adults, there can be whole years of our lives when not much happens. It's only when we try something new that we feel alive.  The key to learning is to keep it interesting. If it's interesting you pay more attention. If you pay more attention, you're more likely to remember it.  Seeing dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum for the first time is memorable. But, in its own way, inviting your child to help chop the vegetables for the first time is equally so. What could you do to keep that sense of wonder alive for your child?  What new experience could you offer today?
Play
I hope you've seen that under fives can pick up all the skills they'll need for school and for life without any formal instruction. They learn through play. A good school is brilliant fun, but it's a different adventure; early childhood is the time for open-ended exploration and discovery. Children will never have those long, uninterrupted stretches of time ever again.
If you take one thing from this article it's this: make time for play. Let it stretch out. Give it room. And don't be afraid of boredom. It's creativity's best friend.

Here’s How The “Sugar Belly Secret” Will Transform Your Life: Rapid, Healthy Fat Loss WITHOUT “Dieting” Low-Carb, High-carb, Vegan, Low-Fat, Atkins, Ketogenic – you name it, I’ve tried it. And you recognize what? They will work! But they're terribly hard to maintain. Which is why I failed to keep my results, and why so many others fail. (Who desires to pay hours each day shopping and getting ready meals and turning down every invite to eat out with friends and family?) These days I eat out every single day, never do intense exercise, and that i now not diet. But I look better at 55 than I ever did before. The reason is straightforward – I discovered an “eating strategy” that’s straightforward to maintain, causes fast weight loss, and doesn’t disrupt your life! It’s as easy as selecting and choosing the correct foods – even quick food! Enjoy Smoother, Younger-Trying Skin Call me a vain “pretty boy” if you want, but as I age I don’t actually wish to seem older. Maybe you'll be able to relate… The sensible news is, your skin will rework into a younger, healthier version of itself. In my mid-40s, my skin had become pale, gray and saggy, and it had been all because of my eating habits. When I finally figured out the straightforward-to-follow “eating strategy” I share with you within The Sugar Belly Secret, you’ll discover a way to get pleasure from youthful, glowing skin again, all-naturally... In truth, with this eating strategy, it’s not uncommon to “turn back the clock” 10 to twenty years (several people mistake me for guy in my 40s…and i’m 55!) Super-Charge Your Energy and Clarity With this simple strategy, you can eliminate “brain fog,” too. No additional mid-afternoon crashes or zombie-like fatigue throughout the day... I don’t care how young or previous you're – you’re NOT purported to feel that means. Using this straightforward-to-follow strategy, you’ll find yourself hopping off the bed within the morning before the alarm pops and maintaining an identical, clear-headed stream of energy throughout the day (without pots of occasional or jittery energy drinks). Reduce Inflammation and Eliminate Pain If you’re not careful, chronic inflammation can cause dangerous diseases, like some cancers. In the short term, it can cause your joints to hurt, impact your mobility, and cause pain throughout the day. Much your inflammation is as a result of of 1 source – food. Eat the right foods and your inflammation can decrease, and therefore will your pain and your risk of sure diseases and conditions. Better Sleep, Less Anxiety, Reduced Stress Did you know lack of sleep is directly connected to obesity, stress and anxiety? SparkMaker Review: A Revolutionary $300 Resin 3D Printer… But It Doesn’t Actually Work
Our verdict of the SparkMaker: We couldn’t get a successful print out of it, but with a few modifications, you might. There’s no doubt that SLA printers produce fantastic quality prints… when they work. 210
The SparkMaker began life as a $99 Kickstarter, which I was understandably skeptical of. Not only was that a ludicrously cheap price for a 3D printer, it was absolutely preposterous for an SLA 3D printer – which was previously the domain of much more expensive industrial printers. It’s now in production, shipping to backers, and available for just shy of $300 from OGadget for everyone else – but is it worth it?
What is an SLA / Resin Printer?
Until now, most consumer grade 3D printers have been FDM – or Fused Deposition Modelling. They use a raw material of plastic spaghetti-like filament, heat it up to around 200C, then push it out and let it cool down in the shape you want. The resolution of an FDM printer can go up to around 50 microns, though this can be improved with smaller hot end mods. There’s a huge range of printers of FDM printers to choose from, suitable for all levels of experience.
An SLA (or StereoLithography Apparatus) printer uses photosensitive resin as the raw material (a liquid), which solidifies when exposed to UV light. This can come either from a moving UV laser, or in the case of the SparkMaker, UV LEDs and an LCD screen to mask off each layer. As the print solidifies, it’s pulled out of the resin tank.
The reason why SLA printing is so exciting is that the quality can be so much higher: up to 10 microns on the SparkMaker.
What’s in the Box?
In the SparkMaker box you’ll find:
The printer, with red plastic cover.
Hex tool, for levelling and unscrewing the resin vat.
Power supply and appropriate IEC cable for your country.
Your choice of resin, if you chose the sample set.
At the very least, you will also need to purchase:
Gloves. Don’t touch resin, it’s horrible sticky stuff.
A metal spatula, for removing the print.
99% Isopropyl cleaning liquid, for any resins other than LCD-W.
You should also consider:
A syringe, for removing leftover resin back to the pot. You can just pour it back, but it’s a bit messy.
UV curing light, such as those used for nail art. You can also cure in the sun, but it’ll take longer.
A replacement FEP sheet for the resin vat.
The SparkMaker has a total build area of around 4 x 2.2 x 5 inches (102 x 56 x 125 mm). The unit itself measures just under 11 inches (275 mm) tall with a diameter of 6.5 inches (165 mm). It’s compact, and looks quite neat on your desktop. Everything is enclosed in the large translucent red cover, though this isn’t fixed in any way, it just sits on the base.
Inside is a single moving axis that pulls the print bed into and out of the resin vat.
Underneath the resin vat is a small LCD screen, and underneath that, enclosed in the base, is the UV LED array that cures the resin.
Safety and Usage
If you’re concerned at this point about safety, then that might be wise. Despite the friendly exterior, this isn’t a complete starter kit considering the additional safety equipment and processing materials required. Nor would I recommend it for use with children. With a filament based printer, the only real worry is the very hot end; this has the potential for worse. That said, adults needn’t don’t worry too much – we’re not talking vats of acid that will burn your skin off here, just some gross sticky resin that’s horrible to try and remove. You also need to take extra precautions when disposing of waste resin. You shouldn’t wash it down the sink. If you leave any waste liquid resin in the sun for a while, it should solidify, and can be placed in the normal trash. In some places, it’s classified as hazardous waste, so do check local laws.
Also worth noting is that the film on the bottom of the resin tank is a consumable item, called an FEP sheet. It’s a special non-stick surface used to ensure the print can actually be pulled upwards after curing. For some reason, the fact that this needed to be replaced wasn’t actually outlined in the manual. They cost around $5 each from a third party supplier when bought in bulk, but there’s no precise definition for when you should replace it. Basically, if your prints start to lose definition, if the sheet is too hazy, if it has a scratch on it which will show upon your print, or if it’s got a crack, it needs to be replaced. In fact, the one supplied out of the box is pretty horrendous, and will result mostly in failed prints, so you may want to go buy a new one anyway.
After a few weeks of trying to print, ours is in dire need of being replaced already.
Just something else to add to that growing shopping list of essential accessories.
Also in terms of safety (yep, there’s more) – don’t power on at the plug socket until you’ve inserted the DC power jack into the unit, or you’ll get literally sparks. That’s right, the SparkMaker makes sparks when it’s plugged in. You couldn’t make this up if you tried.
Using the SparkMaker is (frustratingly) simple. The only method of getting a print onto the device is through the included SD card. It can only hold a single print at a time, so you’ll need to head back to a PC to transfer another file over. There is no USB connection or Ethernet port, and it can’t be interfaced with Octoprint. When you’re ready to print, fill the resin vat with your choice of resin, to approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) deep, put the cover on, and press the single button. The print bed will be lowered into the vat, and begin printing. Cleanup and post-processing is lot more effort, though.
If you want to slice your own models, you’ll need to download the Windows-only (at the time of writing, though a Mac OS version is promised) custom software, called SparkStudio. This includes settings specific to the printer and type of resins, and will output a “print.wow” file. The files are around 50-100MB in my experience, which is larger than your typical G-code file. G-Code files for FDM printers are really just text commands that describe movements of the print head. I suspect the SLA files are larger because they contain thousands of “images” for what must be displayed on the LCD screen and cured on each layer, effectively a little video file.
LCD-W: Water-Washable Resin
SparkMaker offers a range of resins at around $50-80 for 500g. The cost per gram is significantly higher than plastic filaments (at least five times as much), though the objects you print will be smaller. As mentioned, you’ll need 99% Isopropyl Alcohol to clean the prints and resin vat after each print. However, SparkMaker have produced an alternative resin (LCD-W), which can be cleaned up with just water. This is a great option that avoids noxious smells and makes the whole experience a bit safer and cleaner. The prints made of LCD-W tend to be quite brittle, however, so it isn’t quite the ideal solution. The resins are clear, but can be tinted with special color mixes.
Print Quality
Sadly, after extensive testing with both LCD-W and LCD-E (“Elastic”) resin, using either the pre-sliced models that SparkMaker offer or custom sliced using their software, we were unable to get a fully successful print out of the device. This is as far as we got with a Hero Forge sample mini – you can see the supports failed much earlier, so the rest of the model didn’t really have a chance:
The dragon head on the right is the only part of a larger SparkMaker sample that we could salvage.
We did the calibration multiple times, followed some of the print guides for custom slicing settings that should be more successful (things like layer cure time affect it significantly), but the prints either broke themselves part of the way through, or ended up as congealed masses of flat resin:
I should say that the partial prints we did get were incredible. For wargaming / RPG miniatures, jewelry, or other highly detailed small models, SLA printing is clearly the way forward.
Should You Buy a SparkMaker?
The quality of prints you can get out of the Spark Maker are stunning. When it works, that is. If you’re serious about printing little custom miniature and models with insane levels of detail, a resin printer is the only way.
Unfortunately, I just can’t recommend the SparkMaker – not at the moment anyway. The closed Facebook group is full of posts from people experiencing similar frustrations. Those that have had success appear to be both replacing the FEP film out of the box, and doing a modification to bring the LCD screen closer to the bed. The latest announcement indicates that SparkMaker have made some hardware improvements for pre-orders that haven’t yet shipping, so that’s a good sign the issues have been identified. If you order now, you may not face the same problems. However, we can obviously only report on our experience.
In a break to the norm, we won’t be running a giveaway for the SparkMaker: you’d spend more on consumables and accessories than you’d get out of it. I’ll be following the modding process, replacing the FEP sheet, keeping an eye on software updates, and trying again. If results improve, I’ll update this review accordingly.
