Review: Hi-sCoool! SeHa Girls, Episode 1
[NOTE: the following first appeared in the Super Attractive Club newsletter #2]
Hi-sCoool! SeHa Girls is part of the Sega Hard Girls multimedia project, which finds it roots in a series of light novels that has virtually every piece of Sega hardware you can think of (consoles, handhelds, PCs, even toys & peripherals) reimagined as an animu babe. The project culminates with Superdimension Neptune VS Sega Hard Girls next month, for the Vita.
As for the anime, it ran in the fall/winter of 2014 and consists of 13 episodes that are just a quarter of an hour in length. Which is why the first one is particularly low impact; as one might expect, it’s largely just set up. Episode 1 introduces us to our stars, three girls based upon Sega’s most popular systems: Dreamcast, Saturn, and Mega Drive.
They meet each other for the first time within Sehagaga Academy, where its hallowed halls are adorned with nods to Sega’s glory days. It’s a safe bet that those who worship at the alter that Yuji Naka and Yu Suzuki built will be the ones to actually tune in, hoping for the same level of inside baseball that the game Segagaga offered.…
On one hand (based upon my admittedly limited knowledge of the aforementioned game), there does appear to be a few similarities, in the sense that the girls come off as… well, not quite like underdogs, mostly just… downtrodden. And from what I’ve seen of Hi-sCoool! SeHa Girls thus far (have yet to watch the entire run), the show is overflowing with deep cuts of Sega’s deep history. Though it’s also apparent that the anime isn’t nearly as… sophisticated.
Lets talk more about our leads; Saturn is rather serious, somewhat sarcastic, plus a tad bit cynical. Dreamcast is a warm and friendly, eager to please individual, one who is also a bit of a ditz. Mega Drive is both meek and somewhat of a know-it-all, as well as emotionally detached. Basically, anime tropes galore. Saturn in particular is your token tsundere, like when she belittled Dreamcast’s less than stellar internet speeds in the age of blazing fast wifi…
She also complained, for whatever reason, when Mega Drive busted out the Aiwa, which is that portable CD player that also plays Mega CD. Honestly, if not for the references, I would have completely tuned out the rather mundane back and forths, like when Saturn’s taste in men is discussed. But because we are asked to wonder if she has the hots for Ax Battler or Gilius Thunderhead from Golden Axe, or maybe the unknown man behind the wheel in OutRun, I ended up paying attention…
Eventually we enter the classroom proper and meet Center-sensei, a pixellated rabbit that hardcore Segaphiles should recognize as the very first Sega mascot, Professor Asobin…
Center-sensei also explains the basic premise of the show; class takes place within various Sega titles, and the goal is to collect 100 credit medals, which is required to graduate from school. And the very first lesson/game? Virtua Fighter! We get a nice little historical overview before all three girls enter the screen, to magical girl transform from moe blobs into fully figured animu hotties…
Not surprisingly, this is where things become promising. Up till this point, the computer animation was not very eye catching (everything’s largely stilted, due to the chibi character designs, which doesn’t allow for much in the way of expressiveness), yet it works much better in the “game world”.
Not saying it all of a sudden becomes Pixar levels of fluidity, simply that the SeHa Girls match surprisingly well with Akira the Virtua Fighter. Whom we see for maybe five seconds, before the episode draws to a close…
Okay, so this wasn’t the most exciting of reviews, though once again, this wasn’t the most exciting of episodes.
So, what do I think?
Mega Drive is kind of a cutie! Point being, it’s too early to tell, but since I’m such a hopeless Sega devotee, and the commitment level is pretty low (15 minute episodes are not particularly demanding), I’ll probably stick till the end. Oh, and for anyone interested in learning more about Professor Asobin, I cannot recommend this video by Daniel Ibbertson…
