#I like Taash and what they could've been (with a better writer)

now that I've finished datv.. i have some first pass thoughts
spolers below
first of all why is this game trying so hard to rehabilitate in-universe controversial aspects? I mean like. Slavery in Tevinter. It's swept under the rug with a few lukewarm platitudes and codices about how it's being addressed off-screen. Previous games have established how horrific it is, but the tevinter we see in veilguard doesn't reflect that at all. it feels dismissive of a lot of major setting and character development. Same with the antivan crows! they were described as a brutal, cruel organization but now they're the underdog protectors? Sure, there was family drama and a few mentions of how cut-throat things HAD been before, but we don't get to *see* any of that. illario was weak as an example of this bc he was the only thing to be shown as bad. There's no tangible impact.
it seems like a feeble attempt to make sure the players understand that the writers do not condone the unsavory aspects of the setting and characters, while making everything a Teachable Moment. honestly half of the game felt like a psa on extremely basic ethics, like surface-level shit children already know.
on top of that, idk why the game is trying so hard to therapize the player via companions' emotional journeys. The extremely basic and direct "your feelings matter and it's okay to feel your feelings! " scenarios were so repetitive and cringe. Sesame street level bullshit. am i crazy for expecting a more mature and nuanced approach to emotional struggle??? I swear previous games were better at this
also fuck all of southern thedas, it's cooked. hope yall didn't care!
Anyway.
ive only played through Neve's romance and i chose her bc she talks and acts like an adult and not a flustered teenager like harding, or a quirky mpdg like bellara. I liked it, it was fine. no strong feelings about it tho.
I didnt consider Taash as a romance option bc they act like a petulant child most of the time and that's just not fun for me.. and I don't love that Taash seems more like a prop for Gender Ideology 101 rather than being a fully complex character who is working through a gender identity crisis. I am not trans and cannot fully speak to this but as someone who knows more than the absolute basics of gender ideology, their story felt patronizing.
the boys are... fine, I guess. I wrecked treviso so I think i got locked out of some Lucanis stuff but his possession just isn't as compelling as previous characters who have been possessed. Davrin is fine, inoffensive. Emmerich is funny I do like him, Manfred is delightful.
I played as an elf bc I hoped it'd be extra relevant to the story, what with the Big Bad(s) being evanuris. it didn't matter at all. the crossroads doesn't even look different for an elf character like it did in Trespasser.
I expected everything to drive torward making Solas out to being a Good Guy Actually, and it kind of did. but super aggravating for have phantom varric to say that after being actually murdered by him like damn!! you are just gonna let that guy walk all over you bc yall were friends for a short while a decade ago. Where was that sympathy for Anders??
varric being a figment of rook's imagination the whole time was a fun reveal, tho.
siiigghhh. but listen. there were things I liked about the game, too. the gameplay is fun. the environments are GORGEOUS. the characters look good, i think the art style is fine actually. the character creator is great (except those qunari fiveheads RIP)
a lot of the banter and jokes did genuinely make me laugh, and i did like exploring maps and interacting with the new companions generally.
I havent given a lot of thought to it but I think a lot of the plot-related issues i have could've been solved by just setting the game like, 100 years in the future. All of the questionable and unsavory aspects of the cultures the game tries SO hard to diminish and write off would've had time to be organically rectified in-universe. I guess.
well. whatever.

Veilguard loves & hates:
Love It:
the banter!!
overall the armor is very cool looking
don't really have to take a balanced party (but detonations help A Lot)
enjoyable mix of linear quests and exploration
at least some puzzles
more qunari lore that isn't "qun bad chantry normal"
GORGEOUS locations fr. like under the sea? you kiddin???
a lot of the quest location and actual quest designs were intriguing and engaging
the soundtrack on the quests was better than the main theme, in most cases
only experienced one bug (on PS5) so far and it was fixed with a reload
THE HAIR!! love that I can change it often鈥攁nd I DO because there are so many cool options!
honestly the whole CC is very excellent
im in love with all my friends 馃ゴ and my friends love each other!! much more successful found-family vibes than Inquisition; more akin to DA2
so much talk about food and using food to come together and show love!!! big fan of that
I CAN PET AND HUG ASSAN (and will. all day.)
I do wish I could hug or interact with my romanced companion....but the overall romance and amount of references to it were acceptable. more than enough to get me daydreaming about my Rook and Taash 馃グ
Rook's idle animations near the edge of something make me smile
the final battle (like the whole set of quests) felt appropriately dramatic and significant
my completionism paid off :}
the emotional stakes!! I cried like a baby more than once.
DREAD WOOF \o/
the ending (the one I got this round anyway) felt relatively satisfying, even though **
Hate It:
no lighting swap for the Inquisitor CC
no warning before the first major decision point/point of no return. never had my coffee date :(
no armor/outfit dye mechanic, and my god some of the color combos are.. certainly choices
no crafting system
very few legitimately casual outfit options
the main theme sounds like Harry Potter to me
so few meaningful callbacks to past games and choices... it felt impersonal and disconnected from previous game experiences
the way certain areas are walled off (either exploration areas during quests or vice versa) by some nebulous white haze is lazy
I love a DIY home base in my viddy games, but the decor mode is basically pointless. like that's time that could've been better spent elsewhere (like maybe improving the above point??)
loading a save drops you at a respawn beacon, so I'm always forgetting what undiscovered location I was gonna explore next
combat can be fun but is often an exhausting mash of swipe-and-dodge, since unless you use a companion's Taunt skill, every enemy will prioritize Rook for no reason, minus a few swings at the companions here and there (in Adventure mode)
no dedicated Open Map or Open Journal buttons
can't talk to solas whenever I want :(
the evanuris altars are boring. at least the fen'harel ones have some challenge to them, even if it's not a very difficult one
Davrin's talk about the Dalish is.. idk. mixed bag (update: I like his arc though, and Bellara provides another great perspective!)
the Crows are a good and benevolent organization now?? I thought Caterina abused Lucanis? I need to reread his story but it really felt like the writers didn't.
humorous dialogue options are rarely actually funny
dialogue trees don't flow very well, especially if you take one of "more information" options. they need better transitions
too much mythal 馃槫
**the ending left me with quite a few unanswered questions AND made my Lavellan look a whole-ass fool (I will be headcanoning otherwise, because I am a whole-ass fool)
#ellster speaks#dragon age#dragon age the veilguard#dav spoilers#though i tried to keep it general and avoid actual spoilers#dragon age critical#bioware critical#(just in case someone expected to see an empty hate list below the cut?)#will update as other people's reactions remind me of things#since i did not in fact update as i went 馃槄

Some under the cut veilguard thoughts and spoilers
Beware since I'm not that far in the story (i think) but done ton of side quests
Idk how I feel about the Inquisitor showing up. Like it's no surprise I don't enjoy inquisitor as a character but this whole meeting has very much a vibe of this could've been an email...
Seriously like here's statue, south is fucked btw but i'm handling it somehow lmao gl
Anyway i hope they show up again (preferably to die for solas tbh... I always thought they'll die cmonn don't let me down)
It's the first quest line i actually dislike actually. Gives whole lot of telling and now showing dai vibe we could literally do without. (What was said w inquisitor Harding or Varric could say, literally no reason to go out of your way to meet inquisitor)
Idk how to feel about the whole solas mythal thing tbh. Like i do not think that's something new at all just hmm yeah I guess (have to digest all that)
Im getting they are giving him more layers and everything and i get it i get it. It's just hmmm curious where this leads
All older character that make cameo literally feel like in marvel movies. Like wink wink nudge nudge see what we did there?? Which tbh i don't mind? Just don't think too hard about it
Also to be absolutely clear the less we know about what's going on in south the better because then we can headcanon shit ya know? Nothing contradicts itself really and everyone is happy until proven wrong (Hawke and Warden are killing darkspawn while making out sloppy style as we speak)
Also so i don't just vaguely complain i really love the choice between saving the two cities from dragons. The way it's so abrupt and all. AMAZING especially if you play either as crow or shadow dragon absolutely delicious angst
I also want Taash to marry me (me, not Rook, they gonna marry Davrin.. already co-parenting griffon with him so yeah!)
God it's so delicious when everyone is like poor Neve how bad she must feel after what happened to her city while Kalais (Rook) is there like crying and self doubt (no shade on Neve at all btw! She's fucking amazing and I love she gets to be pissed at Rook)
Overall i really like characterization of everyone in main group and how they feel together. Like it's honestly lot more like group who's saving world but becoming very close friends vibes and it really works!
They could've killed Varric. Or idk made him more incapacitated or leave. Because he literally serves zero purpose there. I love Varric a lot like A LOT but like he's just literally there just for fanservice. If they killed him in first mission it would've worked better (i would definitely be pissed but if he dies now it'll just feel cheap but guess then Solas would hardly remain redeemable in writers eyes... Tho would make things definitely more interesting with possible redemption)
#please take it all with grain of salt#it's just me sorting my thoughts#and while most of it might seem like being negative I'm really not trying to be#i genuinely enjoy the game#and I'm curious where it'll go#also it's just my thoughts that night change#don't let that get you down or anything like that#like i said just sorting thoughts#datv
