“Seriously? Why’d you call me out here? In the middle of nowhere? In the middle of the night?”
Jorali sighed, letting his legs hang over the edge of the roof he was perched on, rifle leaning against his shoulder as he glowered down at Kofi, “You realize how much trouble you can get in, by calling me out here?”
“And yet, you came.” said Kofi, smirking up at the Fae, “You could’ve not come, and that would’ve been that.”
Jorali sighed again, shaking his head, “If I even attempted to ignore you, it would’ve been a headache for me, because you’d keep bugging me, until I finally answered. Because you’re a stubborn ass.”
“Damn right.” Kofi puffed out his chest proudly, causing Jorali to smack his palm against his forehead, “Anyways, I did call you out here for a reason, you know. A good one.”
“Your definition of ‘good’ is vastly different from mine.” said Jorali, folding his hands in his lap, “So? What is it?”
“I know you were fairly new when you joined up with the Imperial Agents, but how many of them do you remember?” asked Kofi, letting his wings come out of his back, jumping up to the rooftop to sit next to Jorali. The Fae gave him a sour look and scooted away from him a little.
“I...remember some.” said Jorali, after some thought, long fingers stroking his sniper rifle idly, “They were big. Oppressive. Scarred. They had much more experience than us.”
Kofi almost wanted to say ‘everyone is bigger than you’ to him, but given past history, he knew that jabbing fun at his former lover’s height was just going to end badly. So he kept his mouth shut, this time, “Exactly. But do you remember any of their faces? What they looked like?”
“Where are you going with this?” asked Jorali, giving Kofi a suspicious look, “You have a bad habit of beating around the bush...”
The Tundra just smirked, before standing up and looking around, before jumping off of the room, gesturing for Jorali to follow, “Boy, do I have something to show you...”
Before Jorali could answer, the Tundra was already walking. He sighed, before slipping his rifle on his back, and jumping down onto the ground, following him. He hated walking along the ground. He was small, and everyone was taller than him. Even some Faes were taller than him, which annoyed him to no end. If he was up on a rooftop, he was pretty much above everyone’s heads. Its where he felt more comfortable.
He better have something worth showing me...he thought, frowning as he followed Kofi through a number of alleyways. They finally stopped around a building that was lit up, and inside were the voices of conversing dragons. Some were louder than others. Jorali’s crests fluttered.
“...A pub?” he asked, raising an eyebrow at Kofi, “I’m not drinking with you. You get too...feelsy when you drink too much--”
“Hush and come here.” huffed Kofi, ignoring Jorali’s near shout of protest, as he lifted him up into his arms to look into the window. Jorali only came to Kofi’s shoulder, so in order for him to really look in the window, he needed a boost. Jorali looked like a teenager, when really he was already past young adult age.
But before Jorali could snap at the Tundra, and elbow him in the ribs, he finally saw what--or rather, who--Kofi was pointing out.
Behind him, Kofi grinned as he watched Jorali’s crests fan out slightly in disbelief, “Told you I had something interesting for you to see.”
Inside the pub, Durante didn’t notice that he was being watched through the window. He was enjoying drinks with his friends, and laughing with them. Jorali watched him closely, but there was no mistaking him. This was him. But why...?
He finally elbowed Kofi hard, which he hadn’t been expecting, and he all but dropped Jorali. He just rolled his eyes at Kofi’s wheeze, before folding his arms across his chest, “What is he doing here?”
“I-I don’t know...” coughed Kofi, ducking down a little, so that he wasn’t in the window anymore, “You can see why I called you out here. I was surprised when I saw him mingling with others here. He’s been missing for years.”
“And here he is...” mused Jorali, glancing at the window, “But he looks...very different.”
“He shaved his head”
“And grew a beard. But that side, he looks different, and more.”
“From what I could gather...” said Kofi, folding his arms across his chest, too, “He goes by Durante now. He’s a flight instructor. On top of that, he was brought to this clan, from another one, after he had a flying incident in Clan Chimeric, I think it was? Anyways, the clan was suffering from an earthquake, and he had to be brought here to recover safely. When he woke up, and get this...” He leaned in close to Jorali, grinning, “He had no memory of who he was, or where he came from.”
Jorali’s crests drooped a bit in surprise, “...He’s amnesiatic?”
Kofi nodded, “Yup. I’ve chatted with him a few times in the pub, and he doesn’t recognize me at all. Bet he wouldn’t recognize you, either. He is no longer there--just Durante.”
Jorali sighed heavily, running a hand through his hair, “That complicates things. Edevtia was hoping she’d find him again. He was one of her best agents...”
“And the most ruthless.” said Kofi, softly, “Just mentioning his name among the Agents gives them shivers. But here he is. And now you know why I called you here.” He turned to the Fae, “I need you to report this to Edevtia. I still have my mission here to watch the boy. But she needs to know that he’s here. And alive.”
Jorali sighed, before nodding slowly, “...I agree she needs to know, too. As does Lord Janto. I don’t think they were even aware he was here at all. If he can regain his memories, and join back up with us...”
“The Empire will be unstoppable.” finished Kofi, grinning, “So, head back and tell her that--”
He paused, as he heard footsteps approaching the alleyway. Even Jorali turned around, eyes wide. His rifle wasn’t collapsible. He couldn’t just shove it away, and hide it, it was nearly as big as himself. And with them being that close, there was no way he could jump up to the roof in time--
Apparently, Kofi had other ideas.
Grabbing the Fae, Kofi pinned him up against the wall, shifting the rifle on his back, so that it would remain hidden, before forcefully kissing him. Jorali’s eyes went as wide as they could go, and he nearly shoved the Tundra away, before he realized what he was doing. Before he could have second thoughts, someone came to the mouth of the alleyway, lantern in hand.
“Who’s th--” started Watanabe, before stopping dead at the sight. Kofi didn’t move from his spot from pinning Jorali against the wall. He even had a knee between Jorali’s legs, and the Fae’s crests quivered slightly in pleasure.
The Skydancer samurai watched for a moment, before blushing hard and quickly turning away, giving them their privacy, “Erm...my apologies. But...you should do that inside. Being out where anyone can see you...It’s not proper.” He glanced over his shoulder, seeing Kofi give him a shooing motion with his hand.
So he had heard him. Watanabe nodded again, before leaving them be. Of all the things he expected to find on his nightly patrol, seeing two people making out in an alleyway was NOT one of them....
Long after Watanabe disappeared, Kofi still had Jorali pinned to the wall, kissing him deeply. For a moment, Jorali let himself be lost in the kiss, letting it rekindle old, lovely memories. Memories of the two sharing a bed, sharing a night together, their bodies entwined in pleasure. Things had been so simple then...
It was Kofi’s knee moving against his groin that had him snapping back to reality..and he bit hard on Kofi’s lip.
The Tundra yelped and pulled back quickly, in shock and pain, letting Jorali finally fall to the ground, where he stumbled, before glaring up at him, licking the blood off of his own lips. He hadn’t meant to draw blood, but it made for a good shock factor.
“D...Don’t do that again...” spat Jorali, cursing his stutter, “We’re through. Okay? We can’t...go back to what we had. That flame is gone, Kofi. We are acquaintances, nothing more. Make sure you remember that.”
Kofi watched Jorali for a moment, before sighing and slowly nodding, “...Sorry. I only did it to--”
Jorali felt himself get more angry at Kofi’s excuse, and threw up a hand to stop him, “Don’t. Just...don’t. We had to hide from that guard, or whatever. It was a good ploy. But the moment he walked away it should’ve stopped. You didn’t stop.” I didn’t want it to stop... he thought, but quickly squashed that thought.
After that one fateful mission...everything had fallen apart. And there was no picking up the pieces after that.
Jorali adjusted the rifle on his shoulder, before letting his wings come out. He bent his knees, ready to fly...but let himself pause.
“...Good night, Kofi.”
Those whispered words were the only ones he allowed himself to say, before he took to the air, flying back towards the Empire once more.
Kofi watched him disappear into the night sky, sucking idly on his bleeding lip. Jorali had bitten him quite hard...
Wiping the blood that had dripped down onto his chin, he walked out of the alleyway, heading back into the pub.
It was time for a few strong drinks. He’d do more mission related things tomorrow.
