thinking about a spider-man adventure time au…. like there isn’t a specific spider-man universe i’m using (it’s more of an amalgamation of TASM and mostly USM bc they’re my faves) but oh my god i’m going crazy….. details after cut. i do want to clarify that this is NOT a character analysis because im horrible at that, i CANNOT "read between the lines".

like like peter as finn obviously because of him being the mc,, i’m thinking deadpool being jake because (ignoring spideypool cause i don’t really care for it anymore AND dp’s flirting because finn and jake are BROTHERS.) spidey and dp have a similar dynamic as finn and jake also deadpool’s personality really fits jake as a whole. and copycat is lady rainicorn because dp deserves happiness hehe

gwen is totally princess bubblegum,, science girl,,, peter in this totally has a crush on her and everything happens the same as in canon. i'm also thinking felicia as marceline.. black cat the halloween queen hehe :3 she'll still be a vampire though but she's LITERALLY called black cat she's GOTTA be halloween themed.

next up is ice king i guess. i want him to be usm doc ock bc tom kenny lol, but the personality doesn't fit much.. but it'll be hilarious so i'm keeping it.. and since it's usm doc ock i want the gunthers or gunters or whatever to be the spider slayers lmaooo. kaine would the main gunter i suppose.

i kinda want USM miles to be BMO because i love both of them,, and usm miles feels (to me) kinda like a brother to peter and BMO is pretty much considered a brother to finn and jake (i think). NEPTR is random as hell but i kinda want amadeus cho (USM) to be him, probably only as iron spider though.

ok ok now my favorite casting,, HARRY AS FLAME PRINCESS... i'm a parksborn junkie and wow their personalities and relationship match up SO well with finn and flame princess it hurts.. and yeah i know that finn and flame princess break up but UGH they fit so well, so i must deal with it. i just finished watching s4 e1 so i'm FUELED on this right now RAAAAHHHH. i did draw something and i'll post it tomorrow if i remember teehee. this harry is totally based off tasm because i LOVE his design and character and they fit flame princess more than usm harry does. also flame king is norman because that fits GREAT.

i'm also thinking, on the subject of love intrests, mary jane as huntress wizard. now this mj i haven't based off of usm (and tasm doesn't have her) so i don't really have a basis for her. BUT. her and peter are always fated to be together so she of course would be what is finn's final love interest in normal adventure time ( :,) /pos) and i also feel mj's usual design would mix well with huntress wizard's. now i want to clarify i do not remember anything because i haven't watched adventure time in YEARS and my current rewatch is only in season 4.

Some thoughts about FFH from someone who already heard all the spoilers

(contains spoilers, of course)

This is not the movie's fault, obviously, but the ads before it were about 30 minutes long, that's way too long. When the sony logo came on I was like "Oh, right. I came here to watch a movie." Not coo

While I was watching it, I realized that it was never stated in the movies that Peter likes MJ. We all knew that, but it wasn't a thing before. We just took it for granted, same with MJ knowing that Peter is Spider-Man

Talos is really mean, but okay, I understand him. I don't know if that's genuinely what he thinks of Nick, but that's fair. I love him

I love Happy. He's so supportive of Peter. Especially the jet scene

Oh, the jet scene. I could talk about it again and again. Happy supporting Peter. Peter building his new suit using all those smart words I don't understand. And god, I miss Tony, but at least there's someone who won't be him, because we all know nobody can be another Tony Stark, but who will, in some way, continue his legacy

Oh, I hated Beck. Every time he seemed to support Peter hurt so much because I knew what was coming. Especially the bar scene. The way he was playing it. Jake Gyllenhaal playing Beck playing Mysterio. Wonderful.

Side note, in the scene directly after the bar scene, after Peter has left, Beck says that one of his goons came up with the persona of Quentin? I might be misunderstanding but it sounded to me like he was saying that Quentin was just a fake name. Probably not, but what if it is? What's his real name then?

MJ. God I love her. There's so much more of her in this movie and she was amazing. She was smart and funny and had amazing chemistry with Peter. I loved the scene on the bridge

Brad was so... unnecessary? His character was boring to me and MJ clearly didn't seem to like him the way he liked her, which is nice, to be honest, but I just didn't see any of his personality

The illusions scene. Oh gosh, it was wonderful. It was terrifying, sure, but I loved it so much

I did not see that train coming. And honestly, that's kinda brutal. You talk about how you don't want to kill Peter, and you just throw him under a train. The way that he could, as we saw, survive it. But the way that must hurt a lot. You have freaking drones that could probably take people out easily. Why, just why

I should have put it somewhere earlier but the memorial video made me unsure whether I should laugh or cry. It was beautiful. I couldn't have made anything more beautiful, even if I tried. Helped me a bit with my depression over endgame. It's two months too late, but well, better late than never

Ned and Betty were really cool. I love the way their relationship started. To be fair, if I had to spend so much time on an airplane, I wouldn't be surprised if I got together with the person sitting next to me. The longest flight I ever took was less than 6 hours and I almost went crazy, so I understand that (that's why I'm never going to America)

I loved JK Simmons being back! It's been a while since I watched the older spiderman movies, but I loved his role in Gravity Falls so I was looking forward to seeing him after I've heard that he's in this movie

It was the first time I can remember when nobody left the cinema before the mid credits scene. Half of the people left right after it, which was a shame because they missed my favourite green aliens, but well, nothing is ever perfect

I miss Tony Stark. That illusion scene with the Iron Man suit was absolutely terrifying

Peter deserved vacation and peace and now he's screwed. Thank you very much Beck

Props to the two teachers who were like "oh, we're completely changing where we go doing our trip? That's totally fine, at least we got all that for free!", which I can understand, especially considering that it all happened after the "blip"

Overall, I liked the movie quite a bit. I mostly came for Talos and Soren and MJ and I wasn't disappointed. I'm glad Marvel didn't forget about Talos, as I was worried that he might not come back soon. But he did! And so did Soren! I wonder what their kid is up to now. There's a chance they're on this big ship with all those other Skrulls and Fury. I wonder what's gonna happen there. I'm very excited and honestly, I might go see more Marvel movies if there are gonna be Skrulls there. Maybe not on the premiere, but I'll probably see them some time after that. Congrats, MCU, you've won me over again. You're not completely forgiven but I can ignore that for now if you give me more of what I want.

Spider-Man, No More?

In the first Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, it appeared as if Peter Parker had no interest in taking his costumed alter-ego to Europe and some fans even wondered if the events of Avengers: Endgame had taken their toll on the wall-crawler, leading to him (temporarily) abandoning the mantle.

However, Watts makes it clear that this isn't a retread of the "Spider-Man, No More" moment from Spider-Man 2. "We tried not to be melodramatic in that way," he laughs. "You have a lot of things that have been done very successfully in the past, so you consciously avoid them. This is just for a week. Peter wants to go on vacation. He's earned it."

When Does The Movie Take Place?

With Watts confirming that this trip only lasts for a week, Feige shed some more light on the setting and it sounds like Marvel Studios may have abandoned the idea of jumping to a different year in Peter Parker's high school life going from film to film.

"We had talked about, do the Spider-Man films take place in his sophomore year/junior year/senior year, Harry Potter style?" However, it was then that the idea of a summer break came to mind. "We started homing in on that idea of the class trip. How do you continue the fun of a kid in high school with his high school friends?"

Getting London Right

Thor: The Dark World came under fire for it's geographically incorrect take on London, and Watts confirms that they looked at that movie when it came to making sure they got the city right this time around. "I think we got our London geography right. You don't put Big Ben next to Tower Bridge and hope no one will notice!"

When he was quizzed about a recent poster for Spider-Man: Far From Home which had the London Eye the wrong way around, he laughed: "I did not approve that!"

A Different Take On MJ

It's now become clear that Michelle/MJ is a new take on Mary Jane Watson, and after being described as being "a lot more Ally Sheedy in our movies" by Watts, Zendaya adds: "She's not the coolest girl in school, she's not the prom queen, she's not popular. Exploring that dynamic between two oddballs and loners is cool."

Producer Amy Pascal, meanwhile, notes that "The movie is about [Peter] wanting to get together with the girl. That's what makes him want to go on this trip."

Peter Parker's Relationship With Nick Fury

We've already heard that Spider-Man's relationship with the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director isn't quite as cordial as the one he had with Iron Man, and Holland has now shed even more light on that.

"The relationship between Peter and Tony is admiration," he explains. "The relationship between Peter and Nick Fury is more fear. I think he's a little bit terrified of him. When he shows up, it's no joke. He knows this isn't some silly mission. He knows the stakes are real and it's time to step up."

Why The Wall-Crawler Heads Overseas

Explaining that the idea to take Spidey "Far From Home" came during Spider-Man: Homecoming's international press tour, Watts elaborates on why he wanted to put the wall-crawler in new settings.

"Seeing Spider-Man in Venice was always on the list. I've seen Spider-Man swinging over buildings, but not over canals. We loved the idea of a big night festival going on in Prague, a beautiful medieval city."

The Elementals

While we recently learned that The Elementals known as Hydro-Man and Molten Man aren't necessarily the characters we know from the comics, Watts confirms that he wanted to deliver a new take on some lower tier bad guys from the hero's rogues gallery.

"I wanted to figure out if there was a way to take some more of the definitely B and C level villains and bring them to life in a way that's surprisingly cool. Who are people not going to expect?"

Spider-Man Vs. VFX

Of course, the possible downside of having Spider-Man face a group of VFX bad guys is that he'll be squaring off with huge CG monsters as opposed to an opponent who is a little more grounded. Watts relished the challenge. "It opens up a new style of combat for Spider-Man when you have bigger creatures, or a creature that's so hot he can't get close to him because it melts his webs."

"Or a water creature that you can't punch because you go right through it," he adds.

Jake Gyllenhaal Reflects On Not Being Spider-Man

When Tobey Maguire injured his back, Sony Pictures considered replacing him in Spider-Man 2 with Jake Gyllenhaal. That didn't happen, of course, but he's obviously now entering the wall-crawler's world by playing Mysterio. "I guess you could say that, when you work long enough, stories tend to come back around. There was a beautiful thing that happened here."

However, he doesn't believe that had he been able to play Spidey, he would have done half as good a job as Tom Holland. "Watching Tom Holland, I have to say that I wouldn't have held a candle."

Why He Chose Now To Board A Superhero Project

It seems like Gyllenhaal has spent years avoiding big budget blockbusters, so how did Marvel Studios finally convince him to change his mind? Feige confirms that "we met with him on some Marvel Studios movies long after Spider-Man 2 and just never found the right timing or the right thing," presumably alluding to those Doctor Strange rumours.

As for Gyllenhaal, he says: "Why now? This was a really interesting take on the characters. I really loved it, and thought, 'Let's have a little fun.'"

Mysterio Is Indeed A Hero Now

"In the comics, he's a washed up old stuntman who uses gas and puts springs in his shoes to to try to trick people," Watts explains, making it clear that some changes needed to be made.

"The idea of Mysterio as a hero was something we had never explored before," he continued. "Having the power of Marvel behind you means that you can make those crazy swaps. You'd hope there's a little more to it that it seems with Mysterio. But we went with Mysterio being a hero, which I thought would really surprise people. Mysterio was always at the top of the list."

As for Gyllenhaal, he adds: "Villain or hero, I don't think that's how you can define him."

Including The Helmet

One of the best reveals from Spider-Man: Far From Home has been the fact Mysterio has his classic helmet. "That was so fun to design," says Watts. "You take away the fish bowl, that's not Mysterio. It's such a classic design. It's my favourite design of all the Spider-Man characters."

Quentin Beck Fills The Void Left By Iron Man

"The relationship on the page changed when Jake and I met each other and became very fast friends," Holland explains shortly after revealing that Mysterio ends up being a substitute for Iron Man. "So you get to see two people become really quick friends, and teammates essentially. It's kind of like a two-hander between Jake and I."

"It's a pretty fun ride to see this kind of back and forth banter between these two superheroes, fighting these crazy monsters."

What Jake Gyllenhaal Learned From Tom Holland

When those comments were made known to Gyllenhaal, he had nothing but good things to say about his co-star. "Yeah, but Tom had a lot to teach me too."

"It's a whole new world to me. We became friends through the process of making the movie. It doesn't just work one way. It works both ways. That's what I like about it. Peter and Spider-Man have a lot to teach people, particularly in terms of friendship and giving."

No, Tom Didn't "Accidentally" Reveal The Film's Title

Tom Holland has become well-known for seemingly dropping MCU spoilers, but did he really reveal the sequel's title by mistake on Instagram last June? "That was totally planned!" the actor confirms.

Thoughts on “Far From Home”

SPOILERS FOR “Spider-Man: Far From Home”!!!!

ok so basically i thought that it would have been good if it wasn’t a Spider-Man (“children’s”) movie.

Like, I think Quentin (Jake G) was such an interesting character, and an amazing villain but, I hated that his entire reason was because he wanted to be the New Iron Man. It bugs me to NO END that THATS the reason. Tony stole the projector tech he made, made fun of him (even if the audience didn’t know), and fired him. I think that’s a much better reason than wanting to be the next Annoying, Mean, Rich Rich Rich So Fucking Rich Metal Guy. The tech was so fucking cool? Like, projectors that seemed so lifelike,,, that’s so cool (also i kinda feel like you could relate it to how disney is only using GCI now but the russos are dumbasses). And like, the story Quentin and his team put together for Mysterio, and all the planning and the production value (if you can call it that lol) was so interesting and I was so intrigued. If there was a movie for him, and he didn’t fucking suck, I would pay to see it. His issue is that he’s so hellbent on killing Peter, MJ and Ned that I was put-off from like, half the movie. It’s kinda terrifying that someone can say, “I’ll just have to kill the kids myself,” and NO ONE IS CONCERNED??? And the fact that he was willing to kill innocent civilians just to make headlines, that’s fucked (and modern). Also, I think the directors missed out on a big opportunity for Peter to have a new father figure. Peter looked up to Quentin, trusted him, seeked him out for advice, like he would a father. I don’t remember him ever doing that with Tony. Peter was always too worried he was bothering him, and Tony seemed to brush him off a lot. Sure, Tony picked him and placed so much faith in him but, in the end? I feel Peter became more of a toy for the Avengers than an actual team member. If Quentin had been a good guy, doing this shit for the “right reasons” (idk like, taking the burden of becoming Iron Man off Peter, and maybe mentoring him) he could’ve been AMAZING. I still love him (except his dumb reasons) but, y’all missed out!!!!

Next: The whole deal with Peter being chosen by Tony to be the next Iron Man. Fucking hate that shit!!!!! Peter is a CHILD, he’s 16, and obviously he’s not ready for that responsibility!!!! In the movie, he’s manipulated by Quentin (which i lowkey also hate and explained above) and he just!!! gave EDITH to him!!!!! He’s a good kid, but not mature or responsible enough to handle having access to that kind of tech. I mean, dude almost killed a classmate?? Literally called a drone strike on the kid, couldn’t figure out how to cancel it, and destroyed the drone himself. Let’s not forget that this responsibility was FORCED ON HIM BY TONY???? Like, there was this scene where Peter literally told Quentin that he didn’t want EDITH!!! He didn’t want that kind of responsibility that came with being Iron Man!!! All he wanted for the summer was to hang out with his friends and kiss the girl he likes!!! Peter just wanted to be a normal child for one summer and, apparently, that was too much to ask for. Also, in the scene where Happy and Peter are in the jet talking about Tony, Peter says that he doesn’t know if he can be the new Iron Man. Happy doesn’t even hesitate when he says, “No, you can’t. No one can replace him.” Like hello!!!! And then they immediately forget that little nugget of wisdom, and Peter starts playing with Tony’s tech and literally everyone with eyes can draw the parallels between Peter and Tony. It’s frustrating. I hated how Tony was treated after his death. I completely understand mourning a character, especially one as important as Tony Stark, but it didn’t feel like mourning. It felt like worshipping. Tony had become a martyr, and he fucking knew it (EDITH = Even Dead, I’m The Hero 🙄) and people are still licking his boots. It’s just so weird that, even though he’s supposed to be dead, he’s still a main character and RDJ isn’t even in the movie!!!!!!!! When a character dies, that’s it, they can’t directly influence the story anymore, and yet Tony is still the reason for everything Peter does? He doesn’t have his own initiative. He lived and breathed in Tony’s shadow, and he’ll live in it forever. He’s being forced to become the next Iron Man. And believe me, I love Tony. I grew up watching the “Iron Man” movies with my parents and brother, and I remember watching one in the theatre and laughing till I cried. Guys! He’s dead! He’s done more than enough! It’s Spider-Man’s turn now.

I really hated Nick Fury in this movie. I grew up watching the OG Marvel movies and I loved Nick, but holy fuck. This dude hounded Peter, a CHILD, for help against those Elementals when he could’ve literally asked anyone else (side note: he shot Ned with a tranquilizer dart like? dude he’s a child calm down-). He gave a shit ton of excuses for why he couldn’t get in contact with the other Avengers but, I call bullshit. This dude is like, one of the most powerful men in the world (Quentin’s words, but it’s also been proven in other movies). He managed to track down Peter, how is it THAT HARD for him to find an adult??? Then he hijacked the school trip so that Peter would be in Prague, and he KNEW that once Peter was there he would help. It’s manipulation. Never mind the scene like, 5 mins later where Peter says he’s worried about his friends getting hurt (and having EDITH but not really understanding her), and Nick exploded on him. LIKE DUDE??? he’s a child. I’m also super pissed off at the fact that Nick manipulated Peter using his Avenger status. OOOOHHHH you whore!!! Literally everyone knows that Peter loved Tony (🙄🙄) and he used him against Peter! ASK AN ADULT FOR HELP YOU HAVE AN ENTIRE TEAM OF THEM????? Oh also, the bitch KNEW Quentin was evil. There’s a scene that proves it. It’s right after their first meeting where Peter says no, and leaves. Nick and Maria (the brunette lady hes always with, im surprised i remembered her name) share a knowing glance. They fucking KNOW. And yet?? They let Quentin do whatever the hell he wants?? He literally tried to kill 3 teenagers, and planned to kill hundreds of civilians in London (and i’m not sure if anyone did get hurt or died but, i wouldn’t be surprised). But the most powerful man in the world can’t stop him, apparently. He wants a 16-year-old CHILD to do it for him. It’s ridiculous!

The romance was also a bit hit-or-miss for me. Like, Ned and Betty?? It felt so forced and contrived? It literally only existed so that MJ could take Ned’s place. Y’all notice that Ned basically ditched his best friend for the entire movie for some girl he barely knows? Also, the fact that they “fell in love” on an eight hour flight. Hate that. It’s such a trope and it’s ugly. The romance with Happy and May was kinda weird, too? I mean, I don’t know their past together. I didn’t watch “Infinty War” or “Endgame” but, it also felt forced. Especially at the end, when Peter asked if they were dating!! May said no and Happy said yes!! I’m assuming that’s supposed to be comedy?? ig??? Anyway, I didn’t really like the romantic rivalry between Brad and Peter? (btw no shit i almost called peter “tony” i’m telling y’all they’re synonymous now). Like, Brad’s logic in using the photo of Peter stripping to “expose the truth” about Peter to MJ was so weird and awkward? The entire scene felt forced and I was so uncomfortable watching it. Also, MJ would’ve stuck up for Peter anyway, so it didn’t even matter, and the rivalry was dropped so easily after the opera in Prague. I did actually like the romance between Peter and MJ, even though I wasn’t expecting to. It’s a bit weird how quickly he got over Liz, but whatever; he’s a teenager. (I was going to comment on the necklace thing but, that’s actually kind of in character for him so, y’all get ONE (1) pass). I thought their hug and kiss at the end of the battle with Quentin was super fucking sweet and innocent, and it was refreshing compared to most teen romance movies where they act like adults instead. I was in LOVE with that scene, and it was one of the only scenes I honestly loved.

Ok, I wanna go back to Quentin for a bit. This dude absolutely destroyed the Peter Parker we were given in HOCO, and at the beginning of the movie. Yeah, Tony already had him as a puppet, but Quentin took his innocence. Y’all saw how easily Peter trusted people before him!! Like?? When he found out Quentin manipulated him, he lost almost all his faith in other people, except for MJ and Ned. For example, the scene where Peter calls Happy to pick him up because he’s in a holding cell in the Netherlands? Love that scene BUT! As he’s limping over to Happy, so obviously fucked up and hurting, he makes Happy prove it’s really him. THAT FUCKING HURT LMAO!!!!! I hated that. And that last battle with Quentin on the bridge? He maneuvered so easily through the drones, it was impressive, and he’d only fought against them once before (seems impossible but whatever). And watching the projections dissolve away into just pixels and a scared little bitch in a fish bowl helmet? Classic Theatre. But, he was traumatized by previous experiences fighting Quentin. Peter’s growth made the movie good but, his loss of innocence really made this movie kinda suck. Sure, his innocence still there—the scenes later with MJ prove that—but he’s still lost his easy trust in other people. It hurt to see. And, like, I’m not saying he can’t be more mature but, he didn’t even trust Happy!! He’s so paranoid that he’ll find his loved ones replaced by Quentin’s illusions!! It sucks!!!! Peter isn’t Peter without that sense of childlike wonder, curiosity, and helpless faith in others.

Anyway, I wanna talk about that Netherlands scene again because, holy shit, I loved it. After Peter was hit by that train (i actually screamed but the cinematography inside the train? *kiss*), he wakes up in some holding cell in the Netherlands with a band of friendly locals, and the guard, who’s talking on the phone with his pregnant wife. I don’t know why but, that scene was one of the first to make me smile? Like, it was so sweet how the other men were so happy for the guard and his wife, how they gave Peter a spare shirt because he looked cold, how Peter just broke the lock and left? How the guard was wearing Peter’s mask???? I’m in love. The next scene I liked was literally right after, of Peter limping through the tulip field, and Happy landing the jet nearby. Without dialogue, that scene is so pretty?? The petals stirring in the wave the jet left as it landed?? The HUG???? UGH! I fell in love. Another scene I loved was the scene when Peter went to Berlin to meet with Nick Fury and Quentin manipulated it with the projection technology. Even though I knew it was fake, I was worried about what was going on outside the projection (he got hit by a fucking train so,,,,,, iwas right to be worried-). Watching Peter so helpless and trying to stay vigilant was so heartbreaking, yet I was lowkey impressed. Like? How many other mean ass men could pull that off? None, next question. I can’t even think about how to explain it. I watched that scene at least 3 times, and was amazed every time, my only thoughts anxiety for Peter.

Okay, lastly, I wanna talk about the tech. I thought it was so interesting and unique. Like, I’ve played with the idea of projection in stories, or with characters as magic but, never considered applying it through technology, especially tech as capable as it is. And every scene where the projections were being used were amazing. I mean, obviously it’s CGI, but in the context of the MCU, it’s so interesting and cool to see tech like that used in a very public way. And no one knew!!! The whole system (along with Quentin and his team) was so good at camouflaging that I was fooled at the beginning of the movie. I seriously believed in the Elementals and Mysterio’s ruined Earth. It’s part of the reason I really enjoyed his character. And, like I said earlier, Peter was fooled by it too; everyone was. He learned it, eventually. But not before Quentin could manipulate the situation one last time and claim Peter called the drone attacks on London, and revealed his identity.

All in all, I didn’t have fun watching “Far From Home,” and it’s mainly because it didn’t feel like a Spider-Man movie. I enjoyed “Homecoming,” so much more. The villain was far more relatable (even though you could see it as demonizing the poor), Ned and Peter’s friendship was so wholesome and sweet, the entire cast was fun, and it was more enjoyable than watching some angry rich white man trying to kill children so he can get richer.

Movie Review: Spider-Man Far From Home (Spoilers)

Spoiler Warning: I am posting this review the weekend after the movie’s release in the U.K, so if you haven’t yet seen the movie do not read on until you do because there are some rather juicy spoilers here.

MCU Ad Campaign:

This is why I feel Kevin Feige needs to have full control over Spider-Man because he is a master of teasing us with enough in the trailers to get us excited for the movie.

Even with Avengers: Endgame which kept so much secret in the trailers built up that hype and anticipation, okay yes it was the culmination of 11 years of movies and the second part of what was one of the greatest cinematic cliffhangers in history, but even so there were so many theories and speculation about what could happen that it obviously helped with that juggernaut release.

But the issue with Spider-Man: Far From Home is the trailers and promotion just made the movie seem like your average superhero flick. It was necessarily the case of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or Suicide Squad where so much was shown in the trailer that wasn’t in the final movie, but there wasn’t enough to speculate on or build up the hype unless you’re already a comic-book fan and want to see another Spider-Man movie and know that in the comics Mysterio is a villain so want to see what happens with him here.

I’d say the introduction of the multiverse may have been what both Feige and Pascal thought could be a key plot point to draw in the hype, but that was proven just to be a facade. It was only really mentioned in that scene that everyone has seen in the trailers and there was never a time in the trailers where I thought “Yes that is what everyone will talk about”.

With Thor: Ragnarok for example, it was penned as a fun 80s style buddy movie and that is what the trailers showed, but then you add in Hela and that shot of her destroying Mjolnir as well as the “He’s a friend from work” scene and that’s what made it one of the most watched trailers of all time.

I said in my non-spoiler review that I fear for this movie’s performance if we are to base mainstream audience interest on watching the trailers, I still feel that even though the two times I have now seen the movie the theatres have been relatively full.

Characters:

Spider-Man:

As I said in my non-spoiler, Tom Holland continues to prove why he was such a perfect casting choice for Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Not only does he still look like a teenager so you believe he should still be at school, he has so much charisma and charm that you can’t not like the guy.

I loved when he was at Aunt May’s support centre and was, as May said, a little stiff but it was believable.

Let’s face it, this is a guy who is still a teenager, he is still dealing with the average student problems like fancying a girl and possibly getting good grades, although at Midtown it’s a wonder any of them can get good grades with those teachers, we’ll get to them. But also Peter is dealing with the added stress not only of being Spider-Man but the aftershock of what happened in Endgame both in terms of “The Blip” and Tony’s death.

It was interesting to me that they were kind of going down the Iron Man 3 route of Peter having PTSD from “The Blip” but that quickly turned simply into either guilt or grief over Tony’s sacrifice and the responsibility everyone is now putting on his shoulders. With great power comes great responsibility, that saying is echoed throughout this movie in particular.

I also really like the Spidey suits in the movie, because there were so many it was like a Spidey fashion show at one point.

I loved the fact he kept the Iron Spider suit and especially seeing it pixelating in that container was really cool. Also the upgraded suit he was given which is a mainstay of the character at this point.

Then there’s the return of the original Spidey sweatsuit during one of Mysterio’s illusions which was a nice little nod and a reference to the Emperor’s New Clothes with who the world has built him up to be compared to how he feels on the inside.

Also, his new red and black suit that he created in the Stark Industries jet was a fantastic sequence. Not only was it crystal clear that they were trying to make Peter resemble Tony in that scene, but it was done so effortlessly and it was really fun once again to see someone play with the Holo chamber.

But in terms of my negatives, because I do have negatives for all these characters, I cannot believe he was that stupid that he gave away EDITH to Mysterio, not because Mysterio was an obvious bad guy because he wasn’t, but because EDITH was such a useful device and Peter apparently doesn’t have KAREN anymore so he needs some form of AI assistant.

I did however really enjoy the onscreen partnership of Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Holland, you can tell off-screen the two really got on and it resonates on screen.

There was also a really stupid moment when he’s facing Hydro-Man and he wears that mask to try concealing his identity from his classmates, despite the fact that he is wearing the same clothes his classmates know he is wearing so why didn’t anyone attempt to put 2 + 2 together. I mean it’s implied MJ may have but who knows.

With the Elementals as well, as much as I think they are brilliant antagonists visually, and of course in this instance weren’t real but may still exist, I don’t see how Spider-Man can combat any of them because his synthetic webbing would have no effect on water, fire, sand or air. It was obviously Mysterio’s perfect plan to make himself the hero, but the fact no one thought to question that Spider-Man was less use than Black Widow would have been in that fight really bugged me.

I did like him trying to court MJ, I thought his six-step plan was well thought out and the rivalry between him and Brad over MJ was also refreshing to see in a superhero movie.

We’ll talk about the post-credits scene further down but that ending scene before the credits of him doing Spidey’s traditional scout of the city was a great way to end the movie. The main reason I love playing the Spider-Man games is simply to swing through the city and will gladly spend a lot of time doing it just to explore. Also if that’s not the Oscorp building he swung through than it’s the biggest misdirect in a Marvel movie.

Mysterio:

By far my favourite Jake Gyllenhaal role, I have never been a massive fan of his as he and his sister have simply been actors I gloss over. But Mysterio was a very comical villain for me in terms of looks yet Gyllenhaal manages to make the suit and the fishbowl look awesome.

I loved how he was so committed to his role as a parallel world superhero, you honestly believed he was a good guy right up until the moment when the illusion fades.

Speaking of illusions, these are potentially the best use of visual effects I have seen since Doctor Strange. I haven’t seen the movie in 3D but I was almost tempted to the second time just to experience the splender of how the visuals looked. They were literally effects ripped from the comics, everything came together and it was magic.

When he was revealed as a villain and that epic reveal scene of his and his crews master plan, including throwbacks to Captain America: Civil War and the first Iron Man was jaw-dropping. I really appreciate both Feige and  Peter Billingsley who was the actor playing the former Stark Industries scientist turned Beck’s henchman for making it seem like this was the plan overall all those years back. I doubt very much that Feige planned it from Civil War let alone 2008.

However, the ending for Mysterio is where my negatives come in. Not only did Beck turn into a raging child running out of ideas but also the fact they killed him off is something I really can’t get my head around. Vulture, Shocker and Scorpion are all alive and if they want to build a Sinister Six then surely this Mysterio is a likeable candidate, yet now he’s dead. It just reminds me of the likes of Hela and these one-movie villains with so much more potential.

Nick Fury:

I love Samuel L. Jackson, I know I sang his praises during Captain Marvel but he’s just as great here.

I loved the running theme of Peter ghosting him by sending him to voicemail, then eventually when Fury and Peter do meet and there’s the constant interruptions of staff and students that makes him turn and say “If one more person touches that door you and I will be attending another funeral” it was so great and only could be said by Nick Fury.

However, and I’ll get into the reasons more in my post-credits discussion, but with the reveal at the end that the Fury we have seen throughout the movie is in fact Talos the Skrull, there are tells throughout the movie that indicate that which I can’t tell as to if they’re deliberate or accidental.

For instance, during Spider-Man’s first meeting with Mysterio, Fury says “He’s from Earth, just not yours” so why didn’t he say “ours”? Also when he said that appearances can be deceiving I bet that was also a tell that he was the shapeshifting alien.

For that reason, it is hard for me to say that I enjoyed Fury in this movie because the real Nick Fury is only in one small scene at the end of the movie. But Samuel L. Jackson still delivers. Also “bitch please you’ve been to space!” never gets old.

MJ:

Commiserations to Zendaya for not getting Ariel, but at least now she is the girlfriend of Spider-Man so yay. 

I really love Zendaya in this role, I think she brings a much needed grounded modern realism to the role that I feel is needed for the younger female audience of today.

I loved it when she revealed that she always knew Peter was Spider-Man but when he eventually confirmed it she said “Really, because I was only 67% sure”. They really played up the character’s awkwardness and vulnerabilities in this movie which explain why she is such an outcast and how she just seemed to float on by in the first movie.

My one negative is where the character goes now, I think that scene after she found out Peter was Spider-Man was definitely her weakest because she just seemed like a very mopey love interest. But then she’ll have kick-ass scenes like knocking out a drone with a mace.

The ending with her swinging around with Peter was already shown in set photos but it was hilarious to see the final thing, I loved how she kept saying she wouldn’t look down and then kept looking down. Then when they landed and her hair had seemingly grown in weight was very funny.

Happy Hogan:

I am so happy for Jan Favreau being a mainstay in the MCU, you would think that after RDJ left that his entourage would also leave. However, now that Happy is seemingly Spider-Man’s support staff it gives him more reason to be around.

I will say this though, everything you see of Happy in the trailers you pretty much see in the movie itself, with some extended scenes. There are a couple more funnier scenes added in but other than that you’ve seen pretty much everything he does in the movie.

As I said, I loved the recurring gag of “ghosting” Nick Fury, it was interesting in the first instance because I swear up until now Happy and Fury have not actually met before, but now Tony is dead I guess they have some association with each other.

His relationship with Aunt May in the movie was a very sweet and understated coupling in the movie. I actually do see the two of them together and it would be great going forward if they remained in a relationship just to give them both something to do other than support Peter Parker.

It was such a great moment when Peter started designing his suit on the plane and Happy was watching in awe. He saw what the audience was meant to see which was Peter acting like Tony Stark.

I have also enjoyed his progression from Tony’s bodyguard to Spider-Man’s right-hand man. Not only did he come and save Peter from the Netherlands, but also he saved Peter’s school friends and put himself in danger in the process.

I really hope Happy continues to be a part of the MCU, even if it is in the Spider-Man movies but also branching out elsewhere.

Brad:

Hudson from Neighbours is in this movie. For anyone that doesn’t know what I’m on about there was a minor-recurring character a few years ago who was a gay competitive swimmer who became romantically involved with a main character at the time but also got into trouble with the police, this was him and I am so glad to see him still working.

I am unsure if the character was part of the first movie, but I am happy to see him here as he was a great example of how The Blip affected Midtown High.

He did present himself as a bit of a douche but also he did start off simply as a decent guy, it was just that he let his competitiveness for wanting to be with MJ and screwing over Peter get the better of him.

This did cause problems for me as the movie progressed, not only did he become the whistle blower that no one listened to and simply came across as a bitter individual, but also there was never really any resolve to his story after the outburst of questioning why Peter was always disappearing.

Aunt May:

Marisa Tomei continues to be a great and innovative Aunt May. I’m still unsure about having a younger and somewhat hotter Aunt rather than the sweet old lady we are used to but I still say Sally Field in The Amazing Spider-Man movies was my favourite of the bunch.

I am really happy that she set up her charitable rehoming shelter as she has done in the comics and the latest Spider-Man game. Her delivery of when she “blipped back” into existence and the new tenants of her apartment thought she was a ghost or a mistress was hilarious.

I do think May was a bit harsh to Happy, I don’t think she led him on but she clearly invited him to her office and you don’t do that if there’s not something there more than just a summer fling.

I am a fan of the fact that May now knows of Peter being Spider-Man and supporting him in his endeavours, as well as using him to boost support for her homeless campaign.

Maria Hill:

Much like Fury, it is hard to say how well Maria did in this movie because she spent the entire movie as a Skrull. However in terms of Cobie Smulders performance, I am glad she got more screen time than she has done recently.

Although she didn’t have many lines, she had a lot to do action wise. I loved in the climactic battle when she went to the roof with that bazooka because both she and Fury had anticipated Mysterio’s drone being sent to assassinate the two.

Ned:

If I found Ned annoying in Spider-Man: Homecoming, I found him unbearable in this one. Not only are the negative qualities of him from the first movie back in force here, but that added story of Ned and Betty getting into a relationship was simply pointless and made Ned even more unlikeable if possible.

First of all, I don’t care how he defends himself, Ned got a girlfriend and then blew Peter off despite not only being adamant in wanting the two guys to be American bachelors in Europe but also in supposedly being Spider-Man’s “guy in the chair”.

Also, Brad’s jealousy over Peter was understandable and actually good for the movie, Ned being jealous of MJ after she found out about Peter being Spider-Man was just pathetic. Not only because that is the point when he actually tries to help Spider-Man but also because MJ didn’t really need him, no one did.

Teachers:

With the teachers in the movie, I will say I miss Selenis Leyva as physics teacher Monica Warren from the first movie. Not only because her being Latina fit in rather well with the Queens neighbourhood, but also because it was some gender diversity in the ranks.

Here we have the Caucasian Harrington and Mr. Dell who I believe was created for the movie after J.B. Smoove was involved in the Audi commercial with Tom Holland to promote the first movie.

I do agree with Dell about there being no science on the science field trip and this is also why I’d prefer Monica Warren to be there over Harrington, Harrington is a crap teacher. Not only did he not plan ahead with the trip but also his incompetence nearly got a bus-load of students killed. Bearing in mind he was also the teacher responsible during the Washington incident.

Students:

Aside from the students already mentioned, the other students involved in the movie are Betty Brandt, Flash Thompson and Jason Ionello. I thought on the whole the students of Midtown High still continue to be a great and modernly accurate portrayal of Queens in the present day, but also they proved themselves necessary to the movie rather than just clutter in the way.

Post-Credits:

Alright so we have two very juicy post-credits scenes that not only shape the next Spider-Man movie but also the future of the MCU.

The first scene picks up directly where the movie ended and has Peter return MJ to the ground before taking off for some superheroism. However he is then stopped by a breaking news bulletin which was set up by Mysterio and delivered by William Ginter Riva showing a doctored version of events in the climactic battle where apparently Spider-Man was the one orchestrating the drone strike and Mysterio was the hero who Spider-Man killed.

The bulletin then cut to none other than J. Jonah Jameson, returning to the live-action Spider-Man movies portrayed by the one and only J.K. Simmons. My audience cheered at this point because not only is it about time Jameson returned to the movies but to have J.K. reprise the role he is probably most notable for is a delight.

Although here, the Daily Bugle seems to be an online media outlet rather than a newspaper company but for the modern day it works rather well.

However, believing that Peter will one day get a job at the Daily Bugle seems very slim with the reveal that Mysterio identified Spider-Man as Peter Parker, meaning the world now knows Spider-Man’s identity. I want to see the fallout now.

The end-credits scene shows Fury and Hill in a car before shapeshifting into Talos and his wife Soren from Captain Marvel. Talos reports to the real Nick Fury who is in front of the most fake green-screen imaginable as it is revealed he is actually on some form of space-station crewed by Skrulls.

This could be a myriad of things, but my favourite theory is that this is the start of S.W.O.R.D. to become Fury’s new organization after S.H.I.E.L.D.

Overall I rate the movie an 8/10, I’m not going to say it’s a perfect movie but it is a brilliant movie and definitely the movie needed to follow up after Avengers: Endgame.

Spider-Man: Far From Home Spoiler Review

Just rewatched Spider-Man: Far From Home and it still is a great sequel put with taking off my Edith glasses I will admit that there are some mistakes in this film. Spider-Man: Far From Home takes place a couple of days after the events of Endgame and Peter, played by Tom Holland, and his friends are heading to Europe for a school trip. He’s planning on just having fun and hoping to try and get with MJ, played by Zendaya, but Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson has other plans. So, before I begin, I just want to warn you that this is my SPOILER review of this movie. I have a spoiler-free post so go read that. So, with the Spoiler warning done let’s get this review started. First of all, the first half of the film is pretty boring while the second half is where all of the action is and where the movie picks up speed. The first half is only interesting because of the elementals and how it makes you believe that Mysterio is a good guy but other than that it’s just boring things going on. But don’t get me wrong it’s still an interesting watch that sets up the second half. The second half has the best acting coming from the two main leads. Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays Mysterio, just stole the show in the second half of this film. In the first half of this film, he seems like maybe he actually will be the good guy in this and not the villain that everybody knows. But in the second half is definitely his best work I have seen him do. The bar scene where instead of telling Peter all about his plan he just tells it to his allies shows how great of an actor he is. After that scene, he just completely changes his character and you can see his performance change with it. Obviously, you can tell he gave it his all with this performance and I wish we could see more of him in the MCU but sadly we won’t be. Tom Holland’s performance in the second half is probably the best performance he’s ever given. Throughout the entire film, he plays Peter like an actual teenager. He shows how somebody who just lost somebody close to them is rough on a person especially a mentor. Tom Holland isn’t afraid to be vulnerable in this film and it shows especially when he’s in the jet with Happy.  

In that scene, you can see him torn because he thinks he disappointed Tony and he doesn’t want to do that. He knows that if Tony was still alive, he wouldn’t have trusted Quentin at all and would have been disappointed in him. Happy reassures him that Tony knew he would be great and that having mistakes is what makes people human. This helps show character development with Peter and how now he has to grow up to in order to help save people and not rely on others to help others out. He has to grow up especially with the first end credit scene where now everybody knows who he is. I will mention this is where I noticed some mistakes. Such as, how did Quentin Beck make that video? I mean he had no time to make that video so unless one of his allies made the video then there is no way he could have made the video and sent it to the Daily Bugle. Also, getting J.K. Simmons back as J. Jonah Jameson was amazing and the best part. But that’s just a minor thing that bugged me about this movie that bugged me. The special effects in this movie were really “marvel”lous except for one scene. The scene where Peter goes into the hologram to take down the drones seemed like the special effects might have been rushed because for the rest of the movie the special effects were good. Especially with the scene where Beck is trolling Peter in the abandoned warehouse with all of his tricks. That entire scene was probably my second favourite scene in the movie. It took what Doctor Strange did and made it better. Also, if I saw the elementals, I would totally believe they were real and run away. The action in this film is just outstanding and needs to be talked about. Especially the final fight scene between Peter and Mysterio. That fight scene doesn’t beat the Avengers Assemble battle in Endgame or the Airport fight scene in Civil War but it’s definitely up there for me. It was new and a unique fight scene and really all of them were in this film. I love that most of the time they filmed on location which helped to bring viewers into the movie. But I do want to know if the Iron Man artwork was real or CGI cause if it’s real, I need to find them and if not then I applaud the effects team.  

I love the update that they gave to Mysterio with his costume because it looks way better than the comics outfit. In the comics, it’s the iconic fishbowl helmet, green suit and a purple cape. But this one looks way nicer with a fancy chest plate and a bejewelled cape. I also love Peter’s new suit with the black because it also shows how he’s maturing as a person. The pacing in this film the first time I saw it I thought it was all around fine but the second time around I could feel it being slow in the first half and being just right for the second half of the film. Surprisingly this film actually has some good messages in it. One of them I already being that sadly sometimes we need to grow up and take on adult responsibilities. The other one being as Mysterio is dying he tells Peter how people will believe anything now a day and that’s one hundred percent true. We see things on social media and most of the time fall for the fake news or we don’t get the full story and just hate on something or somebody without the backstory. Just like with the first end credit scene and how people believe the video without knowing the backstory and how to actually was doctored. In the end, Spider-Man: Far From Home is a good sequel but once you start to think about it the more you start to realize somethings wrong with it. I will proudly say that I spotted the Jake Gyllenhaal cameo though and because this is a spoiler review, I'll say where he is. When they are in Italy Peter is standing in front of a change place and if you look in the background you can see Jake Gyllenhaal. Overall though Spider-Man: Far From Home is still one of the best MCU films. I give Spider-Man: Far From Home a 9/10.

It’s finally time

Spider-Man: Far From Home Movie Review

Hee hee i had a shit ton of this done already and then my dumbass accidentally closed the tab so yeah :’)

For some reason, this took me so long to want to write. I saw the movie this afternoon, and it’s almost midnight as I’m writing this. Granted, I am on vacation and was a little busy, but I just needed time to process this movie. The movie seemed really dense to me, and I just had to scroll through tumblr looking at other posts to finally get the nerve to write this.

So, the moment you’ve all been waiting for...

***SPOILER WARNING. MAJOR PLOT POINTS AND THE ENDING OF THIS WILL BE DISCUSSED SO IF YOU DO NOT WANT SPOILERS DO NOT CONTINUE***

Just as an FYI, I saw this with my sister, a fan of the MCU, and my dad, a diehard DC fan but just saw this for shits and giggles. And I will be referencing endgame a lot during this too.

- Did I like it?

Yeah!!!! I loved the humor in it, and the plot was well written. Mysterio is an awesome character in this, though he is a villain.

- What didn’t I like?

(I’ll go into more detail later) The cgi in this, the lack of some of the topics introduced in endgame, the casts’ age, and some of the Peter X MJ scenes (I said some! I do love Peter and MJ together!)

- Pacing?

Honestly? Pretty good for a marvel movie. Marvel usually has some issues with pacing *cough cough endgame cough cough*, but I was thoroughly impressed with this one. Everything seemed well drawn out, and I was never left feeling that a certain scene was too long/short. Kudos because that I am very picky with pacing lol

- Humor

This movie is probably one the funniest movies in the MCU, and it was one of the most memorable aspects of the movie. The morning announcements made my sister and myself wheeze and I had tears rolling down my face as I cackled. Ned and Betty were the truest presentation of Highschool romance I have ever seen. Starting on a whim, being attached to the hip for a few weeks (maybe even a few months), and then breaking up. I honestly loved them together. I’m happy they didn’t go down the “sad and neglected best friend” route with Ned because he deserves so much better. “I’m strong and sticky” made my stomach hurt because I was laughing so hard. PETER BITCH-SLAPPING FLASH WHEN HE WOULDNT GIVE BACK THE GLASSES. AHDHDBDJDHDJ

- plot?

I thought the plot was really clever. Like I said earlier, anyone could see mysterio’s real side from a mile away, but the way they went about the conflict and the climax of the story was very interesting as well. The only thing is that when they were first explaining the secret plan and thinking everyone, I got a little lost. I did finally realize how the bots produce an illusion, but I kind of had to figure that on my own. I was confused how things were being broken and destroyed by the creatures, but the team said that nothing was actually getting broken because it’s all just an illusion. Idk there were some plot holes, but they got mostly filled, so I’m not worried about it lmao.

- Favorite character?

While I do love Ned with every fiber of my being, he just didn’t have the same spark that he did in homecoming. Maybe that’ll change as I see the movie again, but my favorite character in this movie was definitely Mysterio. Jake Gyllenhaal is a phenomenal actor, and I don’t think anyone could have pulled off Mysterio like he did. As I assume most of the internet knows, Mysterio is an actual villain in the Spider-Man comics, and he has powers that create illusions, and I thought that this was a really cool way to portray Mysterio with making him a person. Even without knowing that Mysterio is a villain in the comics, it wasn’t that difficult to predict that he would reveal that he’s a villain. Thinking back, there was a part during the the fight with the fire monster in Prague when something broke off of the Ferris wheel, and I thought to myself “damn, it was almost like the Ferris wasn’t really there” And the illusion scene was by far the coolest scene in the entire movie. It gave me strong Doctor Strange vibes (I wonder why I like I so much lmao) and it showed how vulnerable Peter is. But Mysterio has the aura that just made you love to hate him, and I love characters like that.

- Soundtrack?

It was awesome. Mysterio’s theme is definitely the best. I actually listened to the soundtrack before I saw the movie, and it was cool to hear some of the familiar tunes. It would fucking awesome to hear an ensemble perform the Far From home suite live.

- Peter and MJ

Okay, I understand what they were trying to do with their relationship: display a typical, awkward high school relationship. Ngl, they kind of overdid the awkwardness. Not every relationship is both people constantly stuttering and muttering when they’re next to each other. And that fuckin kiss. It made me so uncomfortable. Me and my sister literally looked at each other and said, “That was the most awkward thing I have ever seen in my entire life” after the kiss. I like that the writers were trying to break from the stereotypical high school relationship, but I do think they overdid the awkwardness a bit.

- WHERE THE HELL WAS MORGAN STARK

HOW DARE YOU RIP A FATHER FROM A BOY AND GIRL AND NOT HAVE THEM INTERACT AT ALL. This is probably one of my biggest critiques because this movie makes it look like they introduced Morgan just to take her away. Same with Harley! Imagine how awesome peter and Harley could be together.

- CGI

Okay, I blame my dad for this. He was the one who introduced me to CGI (Computer-generated imagery) and how to spot it. In marvel movies, CGI is not uncommon, especially in the fight scenes. And I honestly did not give endgame enough credit when it came to CGI hulk. He looked absolutely phenomenal, but I have to say that a good amount of the CGI in this movie was rough. I always say, if you can tell it’s CGI, then it’s bad CGI. It’s really hard to explain, but if something looks like it belongs in a video game rather than in a live action movie, then the CGI is pretty rough. It takes experience to learn how to point it out. Mysterio didn’t look bad the entire time, but some shots of him floating (like the rooftop scene) just looked so fake. And the swinging scene at the end was absolutely horrendous. It looked like MJ was swinging with the peter from the ps4 videogame. The background imagery and the elemental monsters looked real for the most part, and they looked great and real. Just some character mods were really wonky.

- Cast

Okay, I’m going to just say it. What the fuck was that cast? To me, everyone looked so much older than the first one. Like I get it that some of them were “blipped” and aged, but holy shit Ned and peter looked so much older than in the first movie. And, holy shit, Peter is ripped in this movie. I know Tom mentioned in an interview that he was more buff in this movie compared to homecoming, but he was so much more, for lack of better phrasing, wide.

I mean, come on

If the next movie is set in high school again, I honestly have no idea what they will do because, right now, Tom is 23 and Zendaya is 22. And yes I get it that it’s not that old, but if the next one is going to wait 2 years at least for the next Spider-Man movie, they’ll be less like high school students and more like adults.

And while I would have been extremely pissed if they changed the cast, I’m just kind of peeved on how mature the cast looked.

- Ending?

The first ending was what everyone wanted. I could have left the theater then and would have been perfectly fine. But I had to watch the end credits scenes. And then my world crumpled. Hearing Mysterio reveal Peter was so surreal. Almost too surreal... but that’s for another post ;). It provides for a great cliffhanger, but it makes me wonder how they’re going to continue the MCU from here. Obviously, they’re going to do the Black Widow Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 (hopefully) but what next? Is there going to be another “avengers” movie? If so, what about Peter? Bc he’s in quite the pickle rn. And the pair credits scene just confused me ngl. So, Fury and Hill were never actually there? It does make sense why fury didn’t catch onto some things, but it does allow for some interesting conversations. This plus BARF equals who knows what for the future because this stuff is practically the reality stone. No one knows what’s real or not. And that’s scary. Also, does the multiverse exist? I know Beck and his crew made some stuff up for the purpose of tricking Fury and Peter, but the avengers still used the quantum realm to time travel, and who knows what types of alternate universes that created.

What does the future hold? No one knows

But it does allow for interesting theories ;)

I SAW A MOVIE: “Spider-Man: Far From Home”

Spider-Man is becoming my low-key favorite superhero. Batman has always been a classic but his latest movies are very dour and cluttered. Superman never really did it for me growing up, nor did Wonder Woman. Captain America’s movies have been thoroughly enjoyable, but I really didn’t get into him as a character until I was already an adult. Spider-Man has been there for me since Sam Raimi’s first webslinging film in 2002. The latest Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, is an excellent entry into what has so far been a great marriage between the Spider-Man mythos and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Spider-Man: Far From Home follows Peter Parker, played with bursting energy and earnestness by Tom Holland, as he deals with life post-Thanos snap. Still stuck in high school despite his insane adventures with the Avengers, Parker decides to focus on an upcoming class trip to Europe, hoping that it will allow him to get close to crush MJ (a delightfully sardonic Zendaya). However, trouble follows him to Europe as he finds himself interacting with Nick Fury, who requests his help in fighting an otherworldly specials called the Elementals, and Mysterio, a charismatic hero from another dimension. 

What really sets Spider-Man apart from other superheroes is his totally serious struggle when it comes to wanting to save the world while also hiding in plain sight as a regular high school kid. Holland sells this struggle very well, making the audience believe Parker when he turns down a job fighting aliens in Berlin because it would jeopardize his secret identity. 

As Mysterio, we get a frighteningly good performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. The trailers have been portraying Mysterio one way, which is different from how fans of the comics know the character, so I think the less I say about Gyllenhaal’s performance, the better. Samuel L. Jackson plays a more loose, less restrained Nick Fury, which is excellent on multiple layers, and Martin Starr is a cringe-worthy scene-stealer as Parker’s teacher Mr. Harrington. I’m very pleased to see Jon Favreau still in the MCU as Happy Hogan, and his chemistry with Marisa Tomei’s sexy-cool Aunt May is delightful. There are a few cameos in the mid-/post-credit scenes which I obviously won’t spoil but will say are beneficial to Far From Home’s overall enjoyment, rather than merely there to advertise an upcoming project. 

There are so many movies to consider when looking at the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole, so it’s hard to say, right now, how Spider-Man: Far From Home stacks up against them. I think I might actually like it better than Avengers: Endgame (but only slightly) and it’s an obvious improvement over the colossal “meh” of Captain Marvel. While the film acts as a continuation of the general MCU timeline (given that the film’s opening scene is a massive spoiler for Endgame), I think many fans of Spider-Man as a character will find the movie a worthy cinematic representation of the friendly neighborhood hero. Just make sure you stay for the mid-credit scene - it is honestly the most exciting one I’ve seen since the original appearance of Nick Fury in Iron Man.
