I'm really sorry if this is a weird question, but I was curious if there are any specific ways you keep up such a consistent quality AND quantity of art? You're one of the most prolific and skilled artists I follow and I often find myself thinking "how do they do it?!" I love to draw, but I feel so slow and like I can only post once or twice a month. Has there been anything that helps you stay focused and regular with you art? Thanks in advance, and thanks for being an amazing, inspirational artist ^-^b

I'm so flattered and happy you would think of me as such an artist T__T These are some really POWERFUL and inspirational words, thank you!! I feel a bit shocked to hear this, but also really happy to know I can inspire someone with my drawings T_T You are the one inspiring me now, my friend

As for the question, I think probably the thing that allows me the most to have the time and inspiration to draw consistently is the fact that I work from home as a freelance artist, and since that's my job, it has become a daily routine for me to draw on commissions/freelance work, and also cut some time for myself and my personal art. Being allowed to stay at home and focus on art as my job is definitely the biggest factor on my productivity, like for example when I was working retail full time a year ago that definitely wasn't the case, I always felt so tired (mentally and physically) that I couldn't barely produce anything in my (nonexistent) free time, because I was so tired I just used that free time to sleep and recover... LOL

Aside from this being the biggest factor in my answer, I think having a good chunk of daily inspiration really helps me gather new ideas and even the excitement to create more daily! Things like playing new games (playing FFXIV and fe3h sparked my creativity immensely in the past year), scrolling through twitter and tumblr and seeing art by the artists I follow, and thinking 'oh man I love how they did this shading or lineart', that really makes me wanna pick up my pen tablet and start drawing, and maybe try something new.

I think having some side hobbies can also really help me get some detached time from drawing, relax and 'clear' my mind, so when I get back at drawing I feel more rested and inspired by the thing I made in my other hobby. Like for example I play a lot of pen on paper rpgs like D&D, cyberpunk and vampire the masquerade, and I also DM a D&D game for my friend group: focusing on writing/planning the encounters and the story really helps meto focus on something that isn't drawing for a change, and also gather material and fuel for more inspirations for later! (Like drawing what transpired during our roles, the npcs my players met, what they did... etc)

Drawing daily is definitely something that required a lot of getting accustomed to during the years, but I found that it comes quite naturally for me. I get a bit antsy when I don't draw actually. It also feels weirdly rewarding to me, I have a serious deficit of attention on basically everything, but drawing puts me 'in the zone' and actually makes me hyperfocused, so it feels kinda 'good' to me to be in The Zone as often as I can.

I would say definitely don't feel bad if you don't produce enough or feel like you aren't drawing 'as much as you should', different people have different routines and way of creating. Our minds are all different and work in different ways! I'd suggest try to find what works best for you, maybe introducing some more inspiration in your life is what you need, or just trying new things, like trying new methods of painting/coloring/doing art. Try playing new games, reading new books or doing some writing, or something that you like doing as a hobby: I find that connecting my art to other hobbies is what really keeps my inspiration and motivation going.

I would also say that's it's important that you get some rest and chill when you feel like you're hitting a wall. Sometimes the answer to hitting a wall and feeling stuck isn't to headbutt the wall, but just allowing yourself some rest and time for yourself. Social media may make it look like people are always amazing and producing a lot, but to be honest, there are some periods of time when I'm also feeling super burnt over drawing, and just dedicate a week or something to playing games, sleeping, and doing something else. I wouldn't even pick up the pen.

Maybe it's because my mental health (and problems) go hand in hand with my inspiration and productivity, but I also try to approach drawing as something that should make me happy, not stressed or frustrated. If something feels unreachable today, try again tomorrow. Sleep on it. It's amazing the amount of times that the 'sleep on it' technique worked on my drawings, even for professional and commercial work. Be kind to youself and find what works for YOU! Producing something is better than produing nothing. Even if you feel like you're 'only' making a couple of drawing a month, that's amazing that you're making something with your HANDS!! From NOTHING!!

And also, I personally think that posting 2 or 3 times a month is actually pretty productive. We have lives, jobs, responsabilities in our daily lives, and also need some good time to rest, so all things considered, I think you're doing amazing already! !

ahdhdndnd anyways, thanks so much for asking. I’m gonna show u the process while i finish drawing cyberpunk Zombieman for my au!

Step 1: open a blank document.

Step 2: gather references. I use the app Magic Poser to make my pose refs whenever I have a hard time coming up with one on my own. I didn’t really have a hard time with this drawing though, since I already had a good idea of what I wanted to do, but I do use the pose app pretty often so I thought I would mention it lol

I have Cyberpunk refs too, obviously. I also open images that kind of... inspire me? I guess? I like looking at nice artwork while I’m drawing because it helps keep me focused, even though I’m not exactly referencing them. This is what my screen looked like at once I was done:

If a piece of art doesn’t inspire me anymore, I just open a different image on top of it.

Step 3: start doing the thing.

I always start with the head/face since that tends to be the hardest thing for me.

Also, I don’t make any guidelines or anything before I start drawing. Idk if that’s a bad thing or not but I’m just really lazy and impatient lol. I just kind of... go for it.

As you can see, I don’t really plan out the drawing very well. I do have a basic composition in my mind, but things like design and anatomy are just decided as I go along. I don’t really have an issue with anatomy as long as I’m using a reference, but it’s something I still need to practice with. Hopefully someday I’ll be able to draw bodies without looking at one!

Step 4: End Sketch/Inking

A lot of artists draw a sketch and then do their lineart/inking on top of the sketch, but I do it altogether. I ink as I sketch because I find it saves time and I don’t have to worry about forgetting where to ink/color in black because I’ll be doing it as I think of it. Once I’m done with the sketch/ink phase, I just like to outline the figure in a thick black brush because I like how it looks. There’s really no other reason, lol.

Step 5: Coloring

This step is subject to change because I still kinda suck at coloring right now and I’m constantly trying out new styles to see which I like best, but I’ll usually do it altogether as well. A lot of artists start with flat colors and then do shading/highlights on top of that, but I like to do flat colors on one aspect of the drawing and then do the shading/highlights right after. It’s not exactly super efficient because I’ll often end up with colors that don’t always go together but just that’s what I’ve been doing lol.

Okay. Let me preface this by saying I don’t like Taylor Swift. I think she’s a boring artist, who brings close to nothing to the table. The reason I’m even listening to Reputation is because I keep getting recommended an interview of Jack Antonoff where he talks about New Year’s Day (which is a song on Reputation) and I really want to watch that but I also want to know what the fuck he’s talking about. So here we are. Don’t expect more stuff like this from me. I expect this to be just a one-off thing. Swifties, don’t fucking come after me or I will cry. The only other TS album I listened to was Lover, and I thought it was trash. Absolute garbage. And apparently this one is worse than Lover. I don’t know if I’ll regret this.

Sorry, I got distracted. I don’t think every song needs to be this huge deep piece that must be deeply analyzed for centuries, but I do expect some interesting message or context for a track at least. If it sounds good, I’d also give it a pass. 

This one? This was boring. I would not verbally object to this playing close to me, I would just have a grossed out look on my face during the chorus.

I keep reading the title in Akasaka Sad’s tune. You know the part where Rina says “A-ka-sa-ka sad, I’m a sucker”? I keep thinking “I did-I did something bad”. I don’t expect it to be like that.

Final Thoughts On The Album

It was better than Lover.

I expected this to be a concept album, all about the drama she’s gotten into? But it was just boring love songs with some extra flair. I expected great things from this album, having only heard LWYMMD from it before this. A concept album that’s just an answer/clapback to everyone’s who wronged her à la Yellow Flicker Beat (I know it’s for a movie but that song slaps and I don’t know a thing about Hunger Games) would’ve been PERFECT but it was just... love songs. I need Taylor to stop singing about love and start serving us big meals.

I would not like to revisit this. Like, 5/10. It could’ve been a lot better, but it wasn’t because you’re too afraid to cross some lines, Taylor.

2. Do you remember the first song of theirs you heard?

Oh yeah I do lol. It was Jesus Built My Hotrod actually back in the day when I discovered my new music via Music Choice in middle school lol. After I heard that song I decided to look into Ministry’s music some more. Funny enough I didn’t get through any more of Psalm 69 before I went straight to The Land of Rape and Honey and bought that album immediately. 

4. What’s your favourite song(s)?

SO I’M GOING TO HAVE TO FESS UP HERE. I talk a lot of mad shit about new wave Ministry being my favorite, but that’s not true. THE TRUTH IS: LORAH is my favorite album and With Sympathy and Filth Pig are tied for a close second. But that being said if I had to give a list of my favorite songs in order (kind of) it would be:The live version of Stigmata off In Case You Didn’t Feel Like Showing Up (the end of that when he’s screaming fuck this and fuck that is like... idk man it’s the best shit), Flashback (I have my reasons), The Game is Over (for obvious reasons), Useless (that song is a lyrical masterpiece and means so much to me), She’s Got a Cause (this song is so sad but like so happy and beautiful sounding at the same time), Love Changes, Filth Pig (idk the way it opens fucks me up), Golden Dawn, Hizbollah, and Effigy. After that it starts getting grouped by albums. 

13. What do they or their music mean to you?

So I love Ministry for many different reasons, but honestly I think the biggest one is the anger of LORAH got me through a pretty difficult time in my life. Other than that, there’s a certain attitude that older Ministry conveys that has always kind of been an outlet for me; either in my own personal life or in my writing. On that last note, there’s quite a few characters I have that are either directly inspired by Al’s songs or at least adopted from a namesake point of view. I’ve been associating music with writing ever since I started, and it’s really the main inspiration for almost everything I’ve done. For example: My character Extollere is a debt collector for an arms dealing firm in the 70′s, the grungy and sludgy sound of Filth Pig really resonates with this character, who for lack of a better term, is a piece of shit. Another example is Semerkhet (my child and favorite of my characters if yall wanna know more about them I’m willing to talk in a different ask bc it would get LONG) Sem has a bunch of different musical influences, but their main story is almost directly influenced by the VERY cyberpunk sound of LORAH and specifically Flashback and Stigmata. So yeah, baby al is cute and all but honestly his annoyingly aggressive attitude in his early industrial is what resonates with me the most and has honestly helped me through most of the hardest times of my life. 

20. Which artist do you want them to collaborate with?

OLD MINISTRY. FORREAL STOP THIS NEW SHIT IT’S BAD. but no seriously, I’d love to see him do something with Ogre again. The RevCo material they did together was really fucking good and I miss that specific sound they had. Honestly and this is a super controversial opinion, Al’s thrash metal wouldn’t have been so bad if like.... he went a more.... dare I say... Black Metal direction? but obviously that wouldn’t happen and if it did I can’t promise it would have been any better than what he did anyway. idk if Al would have been Trve Kvlt enough anyway. I kinda hope this most recent tour with Carpenter Brut, it will get Al in a more “faux 80s” direction and maybe we can come full circle back to some new wave. but that’s a big Halo Reach I’m doing with that.

25. How did you get into them?

I kind of answered this in the first question, but that isn’t the full story. I heard Ministry on the metal section of Music Choice while cleaning the house in middle school, but after I heard Jesus Built my Hotrod, I did immediately dive into LORAH. I don’t remember why that one was the first album I heard after that. It might have been because it was the easiest to get ahold of off amazon? I don’t remember really. But after that my ex sister in law gave me a copy of Psalm 69, which lol, I actually didn't like that much. So I jumped into Mind after that and loved the lyrics so much that I actually had my gamertag on xbox 360 named after the line in Breathe “rusted syringes at half thought disposal” I was the edgiest kid in COD. but it really just turned into this big rabbit hole of Ministry. I ACTUALLY DIDN’T GET FULLY INTO NEW WAVE MINISTRY until a couple years later when I realized that baby al was much more attractive than filth pig al and the thirst led me down that hole pretty fast.
