Chiasa it shall be
1. Chiasa was originally just a name on my OC Marcus's family tree and a murmur in his backstory. She developed a little more once I used her in an RP.
2. Since I created her parents first (Her mother in particular), she mainly looks the way she does because I wanted to create a reasonable mix of them. In the THG world, it's established that stylists are supposed to be reasonably attractive by Capitol standards, and while she's of a certain age, she is committed to retaining her youth through an expensive skin care regimen and plastic surgery.
3. The origin of her name is Japanese, and it means "One Thousand Mornings"
4. Her family is Japanese (Her father is half, her mother is full), and I thought she could have a name that retains her heritage while her sister, Quinta, already had a more contemporary to the world latin name. I didn't really want to give her something out of place or cliche, like Sakura or Yuki or anything like that. Chiasa at least seemed less overused and also sounded like it would be reasonable in universe.
5. Chiasa doesn't have any powers, since THG isn't that kind of story.
6. See above.
7. Chiasa can draw and sew, as with her job, and is pretty creative in general. Like any good Capitol citizen, she's polite, friendly, and has impeccable social skills, although deep down, she really is a kind person, and more resilient and savvy than people give her credit for.
8. Chiasa may have some rebel leanings, but she doesn't have enough nerve to completely join up... So she's let a lot of bad things happen. The authoritarian government she'd used to work for and her father's death has her knowing all too well what could happen if she stepped out of line. While she's friendly, she tends to be closed off when it comes to deeper things for the same reasons above.
9. Chiasa is an odd combination of the "Mom friend" and "Wine aunt." She's the one who will shower affection and make sure the people around her are taken care of, often at the cost of her mental energy. However... She's less "Madonna and Child" and more "Madonna Ciccone" when it comes to tradition and lifestyle.
10. I think the best thing about Chiasa is her retaining her warmth even after witnessing so much BS... But also not being naive. It shows a kind of underrated strength.
11. I'm not a fan of her giving others too many chances.... Her sister, for example. It's great that she's a caring person who wants to be somewhat optimistic, but some people just can't be fixed.
12. She has a fairly good relationship with Effie, although they're not BFFs or anything. Tigris too, having been colleagues at one point, and I believe they have a tentative friendship. I'll also say Plutarch, but I'll get to him later.
13. I wouldn't say terrible for the most part, but she's obviously not Snow's biggest fan because she hates what he stands for, and she suspects he killed her father. She's polite to him if they encounter each other, however, not wanting to be killed and all.
14. Okay, now let's talk about Plutarch. I didn't set out to pair them together at first, but I had a random thought along the lines of "Hey, maybe this would be cute" and kinda just ran with it. I guess the more I delved into her character, the more it made sense. She would be enamored with someone who wants to break the mold and a healthy bit of BDE, and I have a feeling he'd be interested in her wisdom and strength. I guess in a way they're what each other need in the end; she needs an emboldening presence, and I imagine he's not really used to warm presences in his life.
15. Chiasa individually doesn't change much, as while she's a sympathizer, she's not really involved in the rebels. Maybe she feeds something information to Plutarch, and inadvertently helps him with an operation (Which is what pushed them together in the first place), but not much else. I guess she could be considered a fashion icon to some citizens and stylists, but otherwise? Eh...
16. Well, let's see... Chiasa is a retired Hunger Games stylist, for District 3 in particular, so she could have interacted with Beetee and/or Wiress at one point. Maybe they'd have fairly good things to say about her, knowing her personality. The Dark Days were closer to her lifetime, so she most definitely grew up with witnesses close to her and watched the Capitol evolve into what we know in the trilogy, so there's a bit of perspective on her generation. She also gives a better perspective on the reality of the Capitol in general.
17. Good thing I already have a bunch written down...
- Hidden Depths: She's the nice, pretty, bubbly lady in pink who comes off as a bit vapid and ditzy, but it's really a front to come off as harmless. She knows what's really going on in the Capitol and hates it, and she's stronger and wiser than she seems.
- Nice and Mean and In-between: She's the nice to her sister, Quinta's "Mean" (Walking stereotype of a vain, snotty and naive Capitol person), and her mother, Seiko's, "In-between" (Secretly, she was a pretty notorious rebel, often had good intentions and was a pacifist, but also pretty callous and borderline sadistic)
- The Fashionista: As a stylist and still a designer, Chiasa does make it a point to be fashionable, though she's more on the side of setting trends than following them. If she does follow, she likes to put her own spin on things. In a way it was also a bit of a coping mechanism; bringing some color and beauty into a dreary world and maybe disguising the bad so it's easier to deal with.
- Dysfunctional Family: Her parents were in an arranged marriage, and mainly stayed together for survival and power. She had to watch her sister devolve as a person, her mother was angry at the world and the stricter parent, especially after her father's death, and her father... He was a decent person, but tended to turn a blind eye to the worst of the world and valued practicality and safety over deeper happiness. While his political career had them well off, it also got him killed, which affected all three of the Lapin ladies in different ways.
18. I'd probably want to apologize to her for putting her through so much, but hopefully at this stage, she'd understand. Maybe also give a hug because she needs them.
19. Chiasa probably wouldn't be too surprised that she was created by someone who wasn't exactly stable... But what would surprise her would be the fact that I live a lot in sweats and hardly ever wear makeup... She would wonder how that added up, lol.
20. In her early stages, I kinda wanted to make her a bougie hippie who was a big believer in being a "free spirit" and really was very naive. Glad I made her more aware, she's a lot more interesting that way. 😅 She was interested in somewhat "New Age" stuff when she was younger, but only a few things remain now. She was still never married because of bad experiences of marriage around her (Her parents' marriage was kind of a sham, and she also watched her sister's marriage fall apart), and dated around, with some odd serious relationships in between.
Meta OC Questions
Once upon a time, I posted a series of questions asking about thematic/symbolic elements in relation to ocs.
Well now I've decided to create a new set of oc questions, this time touching upon meta elements of them as well as how they interact with the world they're placed in.
I'm mostly aiming these questions at fandom ocs (which is more obvious in some later questions) but these could also apply to wholly original characters.
..........
What inspired you to create your oc?
Why does your oc look the way they do? What are your reasons for their appearance?
What is the origin of the character's name?
Why did you give them the name they have? What is the in-universe reason for their name?
What kind of abilities and power level does your oc have? Why did you give them their powers? What's the in-universe reason?
What are the weaknesses in their power? Why did you give them their weaknesses? What's the in-universe reason?
Does your oc have any notable skills or good personality traits? Why did you give them those traits? Why do they exist in-universe?
Does your oc have any notable flaws or activities they're not good at? Why did you give them those flaws? Why do they exist in-universe?
In a group dynamic, what kind of role does the oc usually fill? Are they a worry wart? A troublemaker? The straight man?
What is your favorite trait regarding your oc?
What is your least favorite trait regarding your oc?
Which canon characters (if any) do the oc have good relationships with? Why those characters?
Which canon characters (if any) do the oc have bad relationships with? Why those characters?
Did you give your oc a love interest? Is it another oc or a canon character? Why?
How does your oc interact with the canon narrative? What about it do they change?
What aspect(s) of the universe's lore are they connected to? Do they change/add lore to the universe?
List/describe up to five tropes that apply to your oc. They could be related to the oc's characterization or their narrative arc.
Imagine meeting your oc. What would you want to say to them or do with them?
How might your oc react to finding out you are the one responsible for their life?
Share a random piece of trivia about the creation of your oc. Examples: scrapped ideas or changes you didn't expect to make.
