“You look quite lovely, my dear.” Jane assured the young woman, her eyes only leaving her knitting long enough to take in Alison’s finery. “Why in the world would you worry you’re parochial looking?” She paused a moment before adding impishly, “Unless you have a great fear of marrying a vicar. Then I suppose you might have grounds for worrying about appearing parochial.” Being from a small village herself, Jane saw nothing wrong with looking more like a country girl. However, she was also not a young woman interested in catching the attention of the many soldiers and bachelors summering in Sanditon either. She was merely here because her dear nephew Raymond sent her to the seaside for several weeks—he thought the fresh air would do her good. “Is there any particular reason why you’re so worried about how you look?” She inquired curiously. “Or are you simply worried about how the other women in Sanditon look compared to you?”
"I fear I look hopelessly parochial."
