#I honestly think a lot of hikaru's actions in the base material comes from his guilt(it IS suggested in Fatal)

Here it is people, 2 hours and five pages on a google doc

Most media that are based on books aren’t accurate. Is this good or bad? It's honestly up to one's preference. Personally sometimes i think it's better if it doesn’t keep to the source material and sometimes i wish it would stick to the source material. However I do think that if you are creating a show that is based off of some other piece of fiction and make changes, you have to follow through on those changes, you cannot back down and act like these changes didn't happen.
For example:
In the Oruan Highschool Host club manga (yes im using this as an example), haruhi ends up with Tamaki, it works and makes sense and people love it, the manga is the source material. In the TV show the same thing happens, but people were upset. Why? The writers put a lot of time and energy into the Hikaru and Haruhi interactions, even having hikaru's brother going as far to say, “ he will one day realize he loves her” and then drop all of hikaru and haruhi’s development in the last three episodes to make her end up with tamaki. Yes in the manga hikaru likes haruhi but it was different, people preferred tamaki over him in the manga because of their chemistry. Also in the show tamaki and haruhi’s relationship was weird, he acted like an older brother to her until he realizes he liked her in the last episode making it uncomfortable.
This show could have had a more satisfying ending if it followed through with its changes instead of falling back in source material, episode 21 almost made it seem clear hikaru and haruhi will end up together but the following episode proves the previous didn’t matter. If you make changes from the source material you need to stick with them instead of doing a 180 to please fans.
If you are going to make changes you need to keep the confidence behind it, if you lose this confidence you will be more sectipal to purists and lose the viewers who were watching because of the changes.
Why have I brought all of this up? Because i believe the Witcher netflix show should continue with deviation from canon and might even help make the series succeed,
The Witcher Netflix show , which has books as its source material and some video games, as gotten mixed reviews on how it handles its source material, while some think it's accurate and others think it's anything but.
At the center of this accurate vs inaccurate debate are how the characters are portrayed, especially one charismatic but chatty bard known as Jaskier.
Jaskier, known as dandelion in the books and games which jaskier means in polish, is one of the characters who arguably changed the most and might change even more.
Many have agreed that the live action Jaskier is queer coded, that his feelings for geralt is much more than just friendship, this is what mainly has put him in the middle of the debate of how loyal source material should be. But should it matter if jaskier is bi or not if the show has already taken so many liberties to change the character from the book
Now one should note that between the show and video games both are different or have made changes from its source material. However the video games do not get as much scrutiny nor make as many changes as its show counterpart.
Dandelion is a skirt chaser, offensively straight and even a creep at times in the book, but he is charismatic and smooth with the ladies
Videogame dandelion is a smooth talker, a flirt, and toned a bit down from his book counter part
Both were famous before meeting Geralt and even came from nobility
However show Jaskier is poor, looks different from the other counter parts, awkward when it comes to flirting, was not even known before he met Geralt, and seen as annoying by many
A complete 180 from his other two counterparts
However one thing they all have in common is that they see the good in geralt, they see beyond his resting bitch face a gentle man and treat him as a person, they do not discriminate against him
However where the show version deviates from this a small bit. Geralt has punched jaskier many, insults him, and yells at him, Jaskier stays, he puts up with it, he knows he is a good person and it just seems to go father than bromance, the most evidence that supports this is the song ‘her sweet kiss” performed by jaskier that discusses three characters,
A narrator
The person the narrator loves
An a women
This song is played at the end of episode 6 after geralt is broken up with by his girlfriend, yennefer, and yells at jaskier to leave him alone forever.
We can safely assume this song is about geralt, due to all jaskiers songs being about him, then assume the women is yennefer, leaving the narrator to no else but our lovely performer, jaskier.
The song discusses the narrator longing for the second person as that person falls in love with the women, the narrator calls it unfair, and calls the person a garrator which geralt is often is referred to.
Jaskier being bi and liking Geralt would also explain his disliking for yennefer.
As one can see jaskier is very far from his dandelion counter parts, and honestly even though the show is being scrutinized for its changes, not many mind the changes for jaskier, many love him more because of it, so why does it matter if his sexuality is changes?
It shouldn't, people say it will be unfaithful but jaskier’s whole character is unfaithful from his source
Another aspect of Jaskier that also causes debate is how the director of the show forgot to age him up, the whole first season of the show takes place over 20 years, jaskier is 22 at the beginning of the show, and technically should be 42 by the end of the season
Throughout all episodes he is in, he doesn't change looks or actors making the fanbase make jokes about him being immortal and even the social media page runners for this show have also join in the fun, almost as if it was on purpose.
Many like how jaskier wasnt aged up, due to their liking of the actor, joey batey, and how people simply don’t want jaskier to die off.
However many think that they cant make him immortal because of the source material.
Well if we look back on all that has been said, jaskier is many many moons away from his first version, and why can’t they? Its fantasy , it's meant to be unrealistic.
Many fans have also made up reasons for why he could be immortal
In episode 5 of the series jaskier is getting killed by a Djinn and when the djinn is killed many think this had to do something with it
Another is geralt wishing for protection on jaskier
And then there are things that don’t have much evidence but are fun to think of as jasker being part dragon, fairy, or simply just immortal
Jaskiers character changes have helped the show, many viewers watch for him more than the others,
This unfaithful adaption of jaskier has contributed to the popularity, more often than not people will root for the awkward talkative bard than one that is a skirt chaser.
I think they should continue with the changes they made to his character and not back down from it, if the switch out jaskiers actor in the 2nd season i think many would be upset with the sudden change and if they made him faithful to his counterpart it would upset many more since it would be a 180.
Jaskier changes have postivitley impacted the show
Another character who has been in the center of this debate, is the witcher himself, Geralt of rivia
Like jaskier he has seemed to change a lot from his video game and book counterpart
Geralt in the video game and book is friendly, level headed, calm, actually outwardly cares of jaskier always going into a bloody rage whenever he is threatened, he also engaged in conversation with.
In better words redit user put it as “In the books, Geralt has this side of him that's patient, fair, protective, and kind towards others, especially the vulnerable. He talks calmly to villagers that would get on anyone's nerves, he does care underneath his stony exterior, and that's why Jaskier, Yennefer, and Ciri stick around him. He's a likable guy.
Geralt in the show is cold, aggressive and is rude to jaskier. The conversations between them mostly just seems as jaskier talking at him, however even though he does these things he keeps jaskier around, he helps when he needs it even when he says he won't, he cares for the bard deep down but just doesn't show it.
The change of him being rude and hostile to those around him seems to be what has die heart friends angry. While jaskier is arguably more different, geralt’s changes have cause more outrise in the fandom
Now how is it good you might be asking?
This take on geralt should gradually change and it would bring across a nice character arc, one who hides behind walls he has put up and learns to let him down when those walls hurt him more. He starts to realize this seconds after he yells and blames jaskier for all his issues and problems that he ultimately caused himself. He rolls his eyes ask Jaskier walks away instantly regretting what he said.
Season 2 will develop him as a character and make him more similar to his source material, the change of him starting off the way he did is interesting non the less and was a good choice in the long run of the story. It will bring upon a great story arc that everyone loves even if the trope has been done alot, because its favorite, no matter how many times its been seen it brings joy
The netflix adaption is for far away from its source material, it’s it own thing and should be treated as such, many should remember that “Don’t try to compair any of them. Like most shows and movies that are based on books, The Witcher uses the blue prints formed in the books but the story won’t ever be spot on.”
This new witcher has brought a upon a new fanbase and new lovers of the story, the changes it made obviously worked seeing how popular it is, proving that unfaithful adaptations are sometimes good.

Tumblr watch out I’m about to write a five page essay explaining why the Witcher tv show would benefit from not sticking to source material
