The Rise of the Electric Scooter
Tumblr media
In an electric car, the (enormous) battery is a major part of the price. If electric car prices are decreasing, battery costs must be decreasing, because it's not like the cost of fabricating rubber, aluminum, glass, and steel into car shapes can decline that much, right?
On an electric scooter, though, the effect of battery price has to be even more dramatic because scooters are such lightweight, compact, and simple machines. They aren't much more than a battery and an electric motor to begin with. for more informaction you can click here.
Zappy-electric-scooter-year-2000
What killed the electric scooter back then is the same thing that killed the electric car of year 2000: terrible lead-acid battery technology. It's too heavy, it lacks power, it doesn't have enough range, it takes too long to charge. These are all different ways of saying the same thing: the battery sucks. It wasn't until Lithium Ion batteries matured that both the electric car and the electric scooter — and pretty much electric everything, if you think about it — became viable. Thus, one way to see if Lithium Ion battery prices are indeed generally dropping independent of all other manufacturing concerns is to examine the cost of electric scooters over the last few years. Let's consider one of the most popular models, the Xiaomi Mi M365:
Xiaomi-mi-m365-price-history
This graph only shows roughly two years, from January 2018 to now; it looks like the original price for the Xiaomi M365 when it hit the US market in early 2017 was around $800. So the price of a popular, common electric scooter has halved in three years. Very good news indeed for electric vehicles of all types! This dramatic drop in electric scooter price from 2016 to 2019 may not be surprising versus the parallel rise of the quasi-legal electric scooter smartphone app rental industry over roughly the same time period, in the form of Bird, Lime, Skip, Spin, Scoot, etc.
Electric-scooter-rentals-bird-lime
Early versions of Bird scooters were actual antirider, slightly modified for rental. Only by late 2018 had they migrated to custom built, ruggedized scooters optimized for the rental market. The rental industries have their own challenges, and ironically have started to pivot to monthly rentals rather than the classic 15 cents per minute.  Bird has experimented with its business model in recent months. In early March, the company altered its repair program in Los Angeles, which had relied on gig workers to fix broken scooters. It moved repairs in-house (though scooters are still charged each night by an army of gig workers). Later that month, the company introduced scooters with locks in some markets, in a bid to prevent theft and vandalism. In April, it announced the launch of a more traditional rental program in San Francisco and Barcelona, in which users could pay $25 per month to rent a Xiaomi m365 from the company rather than paying per ride. But this isn't meant to be a blog entry about the viability of scooter rental company business models.
I want to tackle a more fundamental question: are electric scooters the future of transportation?
Even Uber, as screwed up of a company as they still are, knows cars are overkill for a lot of basic transportation needs: We have plenty of scooters here at my house, and the family and I enjoy them greatly, but I have never actually ridden or owned an electric scooter. So I bought one. It is of course the popular, inexpensive, and well reviewed Xiaomi Mi M365.

Here's a picture of my electric scooter inside my electric car. (I apologize that I didn't have an electric bicycle to park next to it for maximum smugness, but you can bet your sweet electrons I'll work on that next!)
Electric-scooter-in-electric-car
The short version of my review is this electric scooter is incredibly fun, works great, and if you can get it for a  practically a no-brainer. I love it, my kids love it, and as long as you're conceptually OK with the look, unlike Elon Musk.https://antirider.com/

7 Best Electric Scooters (2022): Affordable, Lightweight, Long-Range, Fast
Scooters are electric powered motor vehicles, so there are a handful of items you ought to and shouldn’t do if you get a person. Initially, if you’ve got never ever ridden an electric powered scooter and are anxious about shelling out for just one, try a rideshare services. Corporations like Lime, Lyft, and Fowl let you seize an escooter for not a ton of income, which is a very good way to examination the waters.
Use a helmet.  Want I say additional? Shield your noggin. Our  Biking Accessories  manual has some helmet options—my particular preferred is the  Thousand Heritage helmet —and  abide by this manual  to healthy your helmet the suitable way.
Look at your neighborhood legal guidelines.  Are electric powered scooters authorized where by you dwell? If so, what is actually the max speed restrict? Do you have to be in the bicycle lane? Around the earlier two several years, escooters have develop into a frequent sight in numerous cities. Likelihood are your state or city has spelled out rules about using them.
Never demand your escooter right away or when no one particular is residence.  The manuals of many scooters I’ve analyzed say the very same. Not just about every battery or charger has a  UL certification  for security, and I’ve noticed a person much too quite a few  stories of battery fires . Normally be around when you happen to be charging your scooter, and unplug it when it’s completed charging.
Consider to keep away from the rain.  You will want to check your scooter to see no matter whether it has formal IP water- and dust-resistance rankings. If not, stay clear of driving in the rain. If there is a ranking, it truly is still a very good idea to get out of the rain immediately. More importantly, do  not  plug the charger in with out wiping down the charging port and making sure that it can be dry.
Will not shop your escooter in abnormal temperatures.  Extraordinary warmth and severe chilly are not fantastic for batteries. Retailer your escooter indoors in a amazing, dry area, like you would your breakfast cereal!
1 rider only, please.  Except a maker explicitly states that an escooter can have two persons, only one rider must be on the deck. These cars can go really fast, and you really don’t need to have to go much more than 20 mph to be in a severe incident. It is also a superior thought to examine the fat restrict on your scooter.
Verify the manufacturer’s servicing and restore solutions.  Ahead of you commit in a new scooter, verify if the maker gives spare components or is capable to service your scooter if any issues occur. You might want to connect with community ebike and escooter stores to see if they have practical experience with the brand name you are going with.
Don’t leave your escooter unattended outdoors.  Scooters are not extremely quick to protected, so it probably goes without indicating that they’re pretty quick to steal. Roll them indoors if you need to have to, but continue to keep them inside of sight if you really don’t want to stroll home, helmet in hand.

'Wild West Of Wheeled Transportation': E-Scooter Injuries Increasing Without Regulation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s common to see lines of scooters downtown, such as these in Houston.
Tara Haelle
When Luna E., a 21-year-old in Tacoma, Washington, realized she would have to wait 30 minutes for her bus to work, the Lime electric scooter laying nearby suddenly looked inviting. She’d used one before, so she hopped on and rode about 20 blocks along the sidewalk at an easygoing 10-15 mph.
When she saw pedestrians ahead, she moved toward the bike lane in the street. But the small bump she hit on the way sent her flying headfirst over the handlebars onto a gravelly sidewalk.
“I stood up immediately, and the first thing I remember is smelling and tasting a lot of blood,” Luna said. She called 911 and was soon telling the story to the fire department and paramedics, who recommended she got to the emergency department. The CT scan at the ER revealed no problems, but the staff did have to pull a small rock out of her forehead, and she has lasting scars on her forehead and knee.
“I haven’t ridden an e-scooter since, and I’ve asked my partner to stay away from them as well,” she said. “One of the worst fights we’ve ever gotten into was when I found out he rode one home from work.”
Luna’s story was one of nearly a dozen I heard when I reached out in my social network to ask who had experienced accidents on e-scooters. I expected to hear one or two. I didn’t expect the flood of cringe-inducing injury descriptions and near misses I received almost immediately. The ER staff told Luna she was the third e-scooter accident they’d seen that week, and emerging research about the new form of transportation bears that out.
Though she had no findings on a CT scan, Luna did need a rock removed from her forehead, and she still has scars.

The latest study looking at e-scooter injuries, published in BMJ’s Trauma Surgery & Acute Care Open this week, identified several trends associated with these injuries: alcohol and drug use was common, and very few patients wore helmets, as prominent instructions on the e-scooters recommend. But it’s clear from barrage of anecdotes I heard in that post — even acknowledging selection bias and the fact that anecdotes aren’t peer-reviewed evidence — that the public health danger e-scooters pose is substantial even without substance use.
“The almost overnight introduction of eScooters to major urban areas around the USA has already begun to have effects on transportation patterns and legislation,” wrote lead author Leslie M. Kobayashi, of the University of California San Diego Health System’s Department of Surgery, and her colleagues. (San Diego was, incidentally, the first place I rode e-scooters and observed a disturbing number of intoxicated folks on them in the Gaslight District.)
“Not all new transportation technologies rise to the level of public health concerns,” they continued. “eScooters, however, have been adopted at an unprecedented rate.” They note that 3.6% of US adults had ridden one within a year of their introduction in 2017.
Their study tracked all patients admitted to their facility from the start of September 2017 through the end of October 2018. Unsurprisingly, given the fast adoption of e-scooters, admissions increased each month. Among 103 patients, 42% had broken limbs and 26% had fractures in their face. Another 18% had internal bleeding in the brain.
And those are just the folks who went to the hospital. Only two of the horror stories I heard involved people going to the hospital, which suggests the actual scale of injuries caused by e-scooters isn’t yet understood or appreciated.
Of the 103 patients admitted, 98% hadn’t been wearing a helmet, and more than half (65%) were young men, primarily in their 30s. Most notably, more than a third (38%) had a blood alcohol level above 80 mg/dL, and 31% had positive urine tests for drug use.
Alcohol figured prominently in the stories I heard, but it was usually bystanders at the most risk. Andrea Luttrell, a Dallas-based fundraiser, had been walking to a live podcast taping in downtown Austin when she and her cousin heard a ruckus behind them.
“It was a bunch of clearly drunk dudes, early 20s, getting onto those green scooters. I could tell they were drunk because they were loud and clumsy and had trouble getting on. They kept sort of losing balance,” she said. “Then as we were walking on the sidewalk, I heard ‘On your left!’ and this guy whizzed past us, barely missing us and wobbling on his scooter. If memory serves, he plowed straight through the stoplight and was lucky no car was coming to hit him.”
Though this was a near-miss for Luttrell, Sam Rathbone in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, has been hit by e-scooters too many times to count. She works nights in the nightclub district and is frequently been hit in the ankles when someone loses control of their scooter and the back of it swings around.
“These aren’t light impacts. They hurt for days after,” she said, and they cause significant problems for her existing joint difficulties. One hit drew blood through her fleece-lined stockings and left her ankle swollen for a week, requiring her to use crutches.
“Every weekend we see people who are far too intoxicated operating these scooters,” Rathbone said. “They’ll try and double up on them, swerve in and out of traffic and hit pedestrians.”
But, like others who shared their stories, she recognizes their value too. Her husband uses them to run errands, and she has no complaints about them when used properly. “But alcohol and scooters don’t mix,” she said.
Neither does marijuana use, the researchers found, since THC use increased the risk almost ten-fold of needing surgery for injuries from an e-scooter accident. A third of all the admitted patients needed some kind of surgery, most often for fractures.
Among the injuries the researchers described were two lacerations of the spleen, a serious kidney injury and one cervical spine injury. These, plus 17 patients with concussions and 19 patients with internal head hemorrhaging, occurred just over 100 patients.
Admittedly, a good chunk of injuries come from inappropriate use of the e-scooters. Jennifer Varchmin of St. Paul acknowledges that she and her husband should not have shared a scooter when heading home from a soccer game. They had planned to share it only for a few blocks until they could find another, but when they hit a bump, her husband lost control and the scooter flew into the grass and toward the street. Both of them were thrown from the scooter, and Varchmin, breaking her husband’s fall, caught the worst of it, with her face and foot hitting the pavement.
“After hitting my $7000 out-of-pocket max and heading into a second surgery in October, my two-minute scooter ride became the most expensive two dollars I ever spent,” Varchmin said. “I will have spent at least six months recovering from my stupid decision to ride the damn scooter.”
But many folks use them properly and still end up with injuries because the scooter malfunctions, they aren’t seen by vehicles or pedestrians, or the scooter is sensitive to uneven riding surfaces. Jamie Carter Park, of Ogden, Utah, had to go pick up her teenaged son after he took one to get a Slurpee for his sick sibling and ended up flying over the handlebars when the batteries unexpectedly cut out. Fortunately, he was wearing a helmet, but his face and hands were badly bruised, she said.
Another friend’s daughter fell off a Lime scooter when the brakes failed. These incidents suggest not only the danger of malfunctioning e-scooters causing accidents but also the inability of e-scooter companies to prevent underage riders or enforce helmet recommendations. Most e-scooter companies require the rider to be over age 18 and have a valid driver’s license, but they have no way to enforce this requirement, and local law enforcement is inconsistent.
“Every city and place has different rules, so it’s sort of the Wild West of wheeled transportation,” said photojournalist Spencer Selvidge, a colleague of mine in Austin, who spent one day riding them off and on in San Antonio and swore never to do it again.
“Pedestrians react differently to them than bicycles for some reason, and cars are less likely to see you,” he said. “They accelerate too fast and stop too slowly, and the handle bars are often not wide enough to really maintain control. Some brakes were new and jerk-stop, and some were painfully, dangerously even, non-reactive.”
Ariel ended up with severe bruising on her legs when she unsuccessfully tried to brake on an e-scooter for a yellow light.
It was difficulty braking that left Ariel L., with severely bruised legs in Los Angeles when she and her husband were using them to visit a few stores before heading to the airport.
“I’ve used so many so I had a false sense of security and comfort that I knew what I was doing,” she said. She’s used Lime, Lyft, Bird and Razor e-scooters, but not all brake in the same way. She was cruising along when a light turned yellow and she needed to quickly stop. But when she put her foot back to brake, nothing happened.
“I waited until I slowed down a bit and hopped off while running, but it was still too fast and I fell,” she said. “I absolutely love those scooters but agree there needs to be some sort of regulation.”
But she’s not sure what type of regulation should exist. Part of their value is their spontaneity, she said, and they’re ideal in big cities with inadequate public transit.
“They’re great for connecting dots on your map, especially when you don’t have specific destinations, in really congested areas,” Ariel said. “They fill a really great gap because they’re great for those distances that are just a bit too far to walk,” and they may reduce cars on the road.
But it’s unclear how the scooters are maintained—especially their battery power and brakes—and the spontaneity they enable makes it less likely people will wear helmets.
“It is likely that the low rates of helmet use are related, in part, to the lack of legislation requiring helmet use with these devices,” Kobayashi and her colleagues wrote. But it’s clear the injuries they reported won’t decline on their own.
“As the popularity of alternate modes of transportation continues to rise, eScooter-related injuries are likely to increase as well,” they wrote. “Early research into the safety and injury patterns of eScooters is vital to guide the public and legislators on injury prevention strategies for this evolving mode of transportation.”

La Mitad
So, we’re now at the halfway point of the trip. This realization honestly makes me quite sad, as I don’t want my experience to end! When I last updated the blog, I was exhausted from getting back from our excursion to Granada and didn’t take the time to truly explain how beautiful my experiences have been. After a restful day in my magical home city of Cádiz, I would like to take the time to do that now.
When I first arrived in Madrid, it was pure bliss. Finally, I was realizing my dream of coming to Spain and seeing it with my very eyes. Everything was so different but beautiful. I remember specifically falling in love with the streets filled with terraces and densely packed historic buildings that seemingly went on forever. We saw as much of the city as possible before having to leave for Seville. One of my favorite moments was when I was with a group of four leaving downtown Madrid, far from our Air B-n-B, and the taxi could only fit three. So, I decided to rent an electric scooter and get home that way. I had been on these Lime scooters before, and I absolutely love them. I flew through the streets in the designated bike lane amidst countless others scootering alongside me. It was the first time I felt a part of the city, and I loved that feeling. I made multiple wrong turns on purpose to explore, and I saw so many incredible things. While I had an incredible time with my new friends exploring the city, I’m the kind of person who sometimes has to experience something by myself in order to fully process how wonderful it is. I came home to our adorable ten bed apartment and made a vegan charcuterie board with my new roommate, Leah.
We took a train to Seville, and it was incredible. I had never ridden on an actual train before, and I found it to be a relaxing way to see the Spanish countryside and get a glimpse into rural life. In Seville, my friends and I noticed the immediate vibe shift from Madrid. This city was more relaxed, the people were a bit more friendly, and the heat was definitely more intense. I loved it. Upon arrival, a group of us decided to explore the city. My favorite moment was when we were joined by Professor Evans, our program coordinator from UofSC, and sat at a restaurant for cold refreshments and relaxation. We talked for a long time and got to know each other, and then we heard loud cheering and clapping from inside the café/restaurant/bar (a common combination here in Spain). We figured there was a soccer game or something, so I went to check it out out of curiosity. No soccer game, just a huge group of friends and waiters talking and laughing together. This was one of my first introductions to the warm, inviting, and fun-loving people of Andalusia, and I knew that I would like this culture very much.
From Seville, we left for Cádiz, our home. I immediately fell in love with the beautiful beaches, blue water, parrots (yes, green parrots!), and modern hippie town/historic Spanish city blend. Now that I’ve been here for two weeks, I’ve become even more enamored with the smaller details as well. Every plant I see is so tropical and unique that I feel like I’m on a different planet sometimes. There are these cat colonies that live on the rocks along the coast that are taken care of by a very kind local woman. We stumbled across her one day applying medicine to the cat’s necks and giving them food. She always is happy to explain to us in a slower Spanish what she’s doing and why she’s doing it. It’s inspiring! Besides that, one of my favorite parts of Spain in general, but Cádiz specifically, is how people are always out and about. They’re often walking with family, spending time with friends in the countless beautiful plazas, or soaking up the sun at Parque Genovés. It would be incredibly difficult to feel alone in this vibrant city! My favorite activity has been hanging out in the plazas, my favorite being Plaza de Catedral, and people watching while eating a vegan tapa or two. My go-to foods have been patatas bravas, gazpacho, vegetable paella, and spinach croquettes. Leah and I have also been exploring the numerous vegan-options having restaurants. I thought it would be hard to be vegan here but it’s been a piece of coffee cake from la Veganesa!
Like I explained in my last post, I did have some culture shock my first week here, mostly from my problems with adjusting to the language. I was incredibly hard on myself, if I’m being honest. I thought that because I’m an anthropology minor and like to think of myself as culturally aware, that the shock wouldn’t happen to me. But the truth is, it happens to everyone. Especially if it’s your first time out of the country. I would be so angry at myself when I couldn’t understand or communicate properly, and I felt like my Spanish wasn’t good enough to be here. I felt like I didn’t deserve to be here because I wasn’t happy and grateful 24/6.
After lots of tears and confusion (which punctuated my incredibly positive experiences my first week, which were the majority of my experiences don’t get me wrong), I am so happy to say that I’m definitely past the hump and in the adaptation stage. While there are still highs and lows of course, I am now just truly enjoying my time here. Also, like I mentioned, my language skills have improved immensely. As long as someone is speaking relatively slowly, I can hold my own in a conversation, follow lectures from my Spanish professors, get directions, order for my vegan needs in a restaurant, and basically navigate my daily life without many problems. I even started having dreams in Spanish, which is incredibly exciting! I also have fallen in love with the culture and people of Spain and Cádiz in general. The people are community and family oriented, and that has been my favorite part of the culture.
Every day, Leah and I get home from four hours of Spanish class to have lunch with Rosa and Lupe, her sister who has been living with her during our stay. Now that our language skills have improved and Leah and I are more comfortable with them, we spend every lunch having pretty deep conversations about our lives and experiences. They are patient with our slower Spanish and more than willing to make connections and teach us about their culture. Every day, we learn something new, and this mid-afternoon national lunch and family time has become my favorite part of the day.
I will continue to candidly update this Tumblr as much as possible. Thank you for reading this far, ¡ha-luego! (as the Spaniards say to shorten hasta luego)

A Beginner’s Guide: How to Ride a Hoverboard?
Imagine riding a hoverboard around the neighborhood in those pleasant summer evenings? It's more than fun. Isn't it?
Not just that, the incredible self-balancing scooters have now become a personal commuting device as they can manage to get through all those tiny sidewalks easily as compared to a bike or a car.
Oh, and need I remind you that it's a lot faster than simply walking? Although riding a hoverboard seems simple enough, it's a lot trickier than you think.
It's more than just stepping on the hoverboard and saying go. Yes, it's a pretty smooth experience for most people, but not for all. A lot of people relate it to ballet moves as you need to stand in certain positions in order to maintain a balance.
So what do you need to do? How to ride a hoverboard? Are you still learning, or do you consider yourself a medium-level rider already?
Either way, here I'm going to explain all the tiny bits of riding a hoverboard. I'm certain my guide will make you a pro sooner rather than later.
A Few Safety Tips for Your Hoverboard
Credit: Shutter Stock
Before we show you how to ride a hoverboard any further, I'd say it does require a little preparation. You wouldn't want to get moving without the essential safety gear, or would you?
Below are a few products that you need to enjoy a safe hoverboard ride:
A tailbone protector
Knee and elbow pads
Wrist guards
A helmet
Taking all the precautionary measures beforehand can significantly help avoid potential injuries. What you need to remember is that most hoverboards these days come with an ability to travel 8-10 miles.
Even though the given speed limit is not very impressive for a car, it can be incredibly unsafe when it comes to hoverboards. Henceforth, it's necessary to have the safety gear so that you can be safe through it all.
Once you're all set with your protective gear, all you need to do is jump on that hoverboard and hit it.
How to Use a Hoverboard for Beginners?
Credit: Shutter Stock
First thing first, standing on a hoverboard can be tricky, especially if you're a newbie. So here I'm going to explain to you how you can ride a hoverboard even if you haven't ridden before.
It goes without saying that riding a these scooters isn't a natural talent; it's a learned art. You may be skating for a while, but let me tell you that a hoverboard is notably different from a skateboard.
You're more prone to falling and getting injured when you want to learn how to ride a hoverboard; therefore, you must follow the mandatory steps I've mentioned below in order to have a safe ride.
Make sure the surface you choose to try your hoverboard on is even and flat. It's one way you can eliminate the potential obstacles.
Step on your board after switching it on so that it's functioning in its self-balancing mode.
After switching it on, put one foot near one wheel of the board and keep the other one close to the other wheel. The more stance you have, the more stable you'll be.
Now try and balance yourself by leaning a little back and staying still. Please be sure to keep your back straight if you wish to maintain the right balance.
When you're comfortable, start pushing your right food slowly, and you'll be on the go.
Are you scared? I can totally relate to it as I was too afraid to use a hoverboard when I tried it for the first time. A number of hoverboards come with learning modes nowadays, so make sure to find the right board, and it will help you with the learning process.
I've tried plenty of hoverboards over time, and the following are a few that come with the best learning mode:
TOMOLOO Electric Self-Balancing Scooter
YZX Automatic Self-Balancing Scooter
Hover-1 Titan Electric Self-Balancing Hoverboard Scooter
UNI-SUN 6.5" Bluetooth Hoverboard
All the ones I've mentioned above are personally tried and tested, so I can guarantee that they can help you learn and practice effortlessly. Thus, I'd say it would be safe to give them a try. After a few tries you will surely know how to ride the hoverboard.
How Easy is it to Ride a Hoverboard?
Credit: Shutter Stock
Alright. You may think of it as a daunting task, but it isn't. Yes, I did call it tricky, but that doesn't mean it's complicated or impossible. Riding one of these boards is pretty simple, all you need is a little practice, and I swear you'll enjoy the time of your life.
For starters, make sure your hoverboard is fully charged before you try your first ride. How would you feel if it stops just when you get into the mood? It won't be nice, eh?
The next thing that I'd like to say is you must be relaxed through it all. Remember that it isn't anything to panic about, it's easy and more than fun once you get the grip.
Let me share some of the best board riding tricks and tips I've learned from my years of experience:
Moving Back and Forth
It can be a little tricky at first, but what you need to know is that moving the hoverboard backward and forward requires nothing but a slight lean. If you wanna go forward, lean forward, if you wanna go backwards lean back! Thats it! Be sure to keep your back straight; just move your ankles a little, and you'll be on the go.
How to Turn Right
What do you need now? You need to turn the hoverboard right? Simply give a little push to your left toe. It will shift your body weight in the opposite direction so you'll swiftly move towards your desired way.
How to Turn Left
Now follow the same procedure to turn left, move your right toe a little forward. It will shift your weight in the opposite direction and help you move. Please ensure to keep your other foot in horizontal order.
In case it's confusing, you can slightly lean your toe in the desired direction, but it may be challenging managing if you're a beginner. Start slowly! Because if you push your right foot on the hoverboard to strong, you might end up turning in circles.
Spinning the Hoverboard Around
Let's talk about spinning the hoverboard in a circle and performing a few stunts; it's simpler than you think. If you're going to spin it in a clockwise direction, lean your left toe forward while pushing down your right ankle.
In case you want to spin in an anti-clockwise direction, follow the same process with your right toe and left ankle.
It's all about how you move and control your toes at the end of the day. The more you push your toes, the faster your board would move, and the sharper would be the turns and movements. Still, I'd say you MUST be cautious if you're trying it for the first time.
You don't have to worry in case you're not able to balance yourself properly. Please know that practice makes a man perfect, so keep practicing, and I'm confident you'll eventually win at it.
When it comes to controlling the board and balancing yourself, there's no actual trick. Just be sure to be cautious when riding off-road.
Take a good note of the features when buying a hoverboard, your board would tell you what kinds of terrains it can handle. In case it's not made to handle steep surfaces, it won't be safe to ride on hills and slopes. It's as simple as that.
Moreover, if you're still learning, try it on even surfaces first and slowly move towards slight inclines. Also, make sure to ride at a slow speed to avoid any potential injuries.
Okay. Here I have a rundown with some of the best self-balancing scooters for all the newbies out there.
LIEAGLE Self-Balancing Scooter
RFSTGYU Bluetooth Hoverboard
Qin Self-Balancing Hoverboard
KUI RFSTGYU Bluetooth Hoverboard
All these hoverboards are quite advanced, and they are designed to last. The best part being, they bring along various modes; henceforth, they're great for both, beginners and pros.
When you're making an investment, so why not make a sensible one that lasts longer and serves you well? It's a wise thing, of course.
How Do You Step Off a Hoverboard?
Credit: Shutter Stock
Are you wondering how to get off a self-balancing scooter? Nope, I wouldn't say it's simple, and that is why I want you to listen to this carefully. Never leap off too quickly as it can turn the hoverboard upside down, and you may fall. I'm sure you wouldn't want that, so let's talk about stepping off a hoverboard safely.
When stepping off a hoverboard, pay attention to your dominant foot first and slowly shift your body weight on it.
After that, take a step back and get off the hoverboard using your foot with a lesser weight.
Please ensure not to get off the hoverboard in a forward direction as it can speed up the board while taking off your other foot, which can be dangerous as you may lose the balance.
The key to remember here is that you must always step off the hoverboard in the backward direction. It will control the speed of the board so you can safely manage your way out.
How Do You Control a Hoverboard?
Credit: Shutter Stock
One thing that scares most people when riding a hoverboard is its speed. Many of my friends have been asking me about how they can control the speed without losing their balance.
As a matter of fact, hoverboards can go up to 10-12 mph, but how do you manage them with such high speed? Now here comes the real question!
Controlling the speed of your hoverboard isn't a problem if you learn to lean correctly. When you slightly lean forward, your hoverboard moves forward too, and as you keep pushing forward, your speed would accelerate. I hope that's clear by now?
If your board comes with a speed control system, it will only go as fast as the hoverboard allows. In case there's no restriction on the speed, your hoverboard would move as you lean forward until it reaches its maximum speed limit.
Several hoverboards bring along an additional safety feature as they will notify you when you're close to the maximum speed limit. Isn't that wonderful?
Once you get to hear the speed alert, know that it's time you slow down. Make sure not to exceed the given speed limit as the hoverboard would then go out of control, the motors may shut off, and it may fly off the ground.
Such incidents have turned into terrible accidents; therefore, I'd say you must not pull out any stunt of that kind.
Looking to control the speed or stop altogether? Simply stop pushing your toes forward and lean a little in the backward direction, but not too much, or else the hoverboard may start moving backward. It's a smart way to decrease the speed so you can step off safely.
Preventative Measures While Riding a Hoverboard
Credit: Shutter Stock
Now that you know how to ride a hoverboard safely, I'd like to enlighten you with a few preventative measures to save you the trouble later down the road. Hoverboard injuries can be bad, so why not be safe now than sorry later?
Never bend your knees when riding a hoverboard. It is one thing that will affect your weight while disturbing the balance.
Look at the things that are in front of you, and don't stare at your feet. Your feet will be okay if you ride correctly.
Don't try what you try with your skateboard. You may be a pro at skating, but skateboards are a lot more flexible than a hoverboard, so those flying tricks may not work with these self-balancing scooters.
If you're a beginner, stick to even surfaces. Start by riding around the neighborhood and gradually move towards the rough terrains. Don't rush the decision; you'll know when you're ready.
Make no mistake; there's nothing more important than your safety. Thus, it would be best to follow the safety measures I've mentioned above appropriately while riding a hoverboard. Be sure not to pull lots of stunts and follow the instructions at all times.
Rest assured, a hoverboard is more than fun. Now that you know how to ride hoverboards, it’s time for you to try!

Kugoo ES2: This is the Electric Scooter You’ve Been Looking For
Our verdict of the Kugoo ES2 Electric Scooter: Enjoy a smooth, safe, zero-emissions ride and without the feeling that you're riding a child's toy. But it's bulky and heavy, so give it a miss if you're going to be carrying it up and down stairs. 910
I’ve never ridden a scooter before, much less an electric one that can hurtle along at 25km/h. So you can understand my trepidation going into this review. It turns out that I had nothing to worry about: the Kugoo ES2 is like the SUV of electric scooters. It handles itself admirably, weighs an absolute ton, and makes the rider feel as safe as humanly possible.
The Kugoo ES2 is available now from GeekBuying.com for less than $400 (use the coupon code GKB226S to get it for $367 for a limited time!)
We think it’s a bargain, but read on to find out more, and at the end of this review, we have one to giveaway to one lucky reader!
Kugoo ES2 Specs and Features
350W motor
7.5Ah battery (not user replaceable)
Fixed height handlebar
Rear disc brake and front e-brake
Cruise control
Maximum speed 25kh/h (15mph)
Three speed modes
Range: 25km (15 miles)
Carrying capacity: 220 pounds (100kg)
Weight: 33 pounds (15kg)
Size when folded: 44 x 13 x 17 inches (112 x 33 x 43 cm)
The biggest downside to the Kugoo ES2 is the sheer weight, compromising mainly of the thick, sturdy aluminum alloy frame, and a massive 7.5Ah battery underneath the stand. On the flip side, it feels incredibly solid and well built. The weight alone results in greater stability.
Even when folded, it’s still awkward to carry.
For reference, I stand 185cm tall and weigh around 95kg, so I’m at the top end of the stated capacity. The fixed height handlebar seemed to be perfect for myself and other adults that tried it. Those of you who are smaller in stature might be better off looking at the Kugoo S1 though, which is adjustable.
Safety and Offroad
Featuring a front shock absorber and 8.5 inch solid honeycomb-patterned tyres, the Kugoo ES2 offers a smooth ride on your typical urban terrain. It isn’t designed for offroading, but that didn’t stop me from testing it anyway. On compacted gravel and dry dirt roads, it handled admirably, though you can certainly feel the bumps. On deeper gravel, it simply can’t push through. Overall, I was really impressed with how it handled the variety of terrain around my little town, including the unadopted dirt road that we live on.
The honeycomb solid wheels provide a comfy ride but struggled in deep gravel.
The biggest surprise was simply how stable it felt. You won’t need any training, and even from literally zero experience, you’ll be off and away in no time. The app allows you to set either a zero-start for minimum effort, or push start if you’re worried. Being quite lazy, I left it on zero-start, and it felt quite safe. It’s only at low speeds that you might wobble or put your foot out for safety. Anything above 3km/h will naturally stabilize with no input from you.
The Kugoo ES2 offers a smooth ride over your average urban surfaces.
The controls are simple, but I’d suggest leaving the Kugoo ES2 on beginner speed mode until you’re used to the braking and cruise control. The thumb-controlled lever on the left side controls the front e-brake, but you also have a physical disc brake on the rear wheel.
The inclusion of a physical disc brake makes this safer than most e-scooters.
Generally, you’ll want to use both. At higher speeds or downhill, you should use mainly the rear brake. Using the front e-brake at higher speeds could see you heading straight over the handlebars.
Use both the front e-brake and rear disc brake when going at speeds or downhill to avoid going over the handlebars!
Pushing down on the right accelerator and maintaining the same speed for six seconds will set the cruise control. The ES2 will beep to let you know. Using the rear disc brake or only lightly applying the e-brake will not cancel cruise control, so you may find yourself lurching forwards as the motor kicks in again. Be sure to cancel the cruise control by pushing the e-brake dial all the way down.
Speed Testing
Being on the larger size meant I wasn’t quite able to achieve the top speed, achieving a maximum of 21km/h on flat road terrain. However, that was much faster than I would be comfortable with for daily use anyway.
Safety first, boys and girls!
The same was also true of the stated range: I got about 12.5 miles (20km) out of a single charge. This is to be expected since heavier things take more energy to move!
Night Usage
Press twice on the power button to activate the bright front headlight and rear light. I found this to be more than enough to light the way down our unlit dirt path, or to be easily visible on your averagely lit street.
When powered on the base of the scooter also features a strip of blue LEDs, which can’t be turned off. At night the effect is pleasing but somewhat pointless.
Even in daylight the LCD screen is easily visible. A powerful headlight beam allows for safe night rides.
Why Does It Have Bluetooth?
Situated just beneath the LCD screen is a rubber cover that opens to reveal a USB port, into which you can plug your phone to charge while riding. There’s no mount included though, so if you want to use GPS navigation you’ll need to source your own method of securing it to the handlebars.
A USB port allows you to keep your phone charged. But you’ll have to figure out how to mount it yourself.
The Kugoo ES2 is also equipped with Bluetooth, and an accompanying app which offers navigation and a simple heads-up display. It allows you to adjust a few settings (zero effort or push-start, metric or imperial speed), and run some self-check diagnostics. Other than for initial setup I see no reason to use it. The LCD screen is clear and displays all the information you could need, and for short local journeys, you probably don’t need GPS.
The Legal Situation
For my fellow UK folk who may be considering buying the Kugoo ES2–or any electric scooter–there’s something you should know first. Electric scooters aren’t allowed on the road as they aren’t licensed; they aren’t allowed on bike lanes because they don’t have pedals; and they aren’t allowed on the pavement because they’re motorized. In the eyes of the UK law at least, electric scooters just don’t exist. That makes riding one by default illegal anywhere other than private land. The same is true of Segways, and those insipid “hoverboards” that don’t actually do anything that even remotely resembles the act of hovering.
If caught using one, you may be fined up to £300, or have the device confiscated. However, this is rare, and only really seems to be happening in London. I understand the legal situation is similar in New York, though less strictly enforced. Other urban centers around the world have embraced these remarkable zero-emissions technologies, but like most things, the UK lags behind.
While I fully expect the laws to be updated within the next year or two, for now you should be aware of the risks.
Is The Kugoo ES2 The Electric Scooter for You?
If you’re a grown adult and want an electric scooter that won’t make you look like you’re riding a child’s toy, the Kugoo ES2 is it. It’s fast enough for anyone, and will you get from A to B with zero emissions and not a single bead of sweat. Use the coupon code GKB226S to get yours for $367 (until December 14th, so be quick!).
But even when folded, the Kugoo ES2 is awkward and heavy to carry. The benefit of riding an eScooter is that it takes absolutely zero effort, unlike a bicycle which may leave you drenched in sweat by the time you get to your destination. If you need to travel up and down three flights of stairs at either end of your journey, the weight of the Kugoo ES2 may make it unsuitable. My wife just couldn’t carry it. If you need something lighter and more portable, check out the Kugoo S1 model instead (which you can also grab a bargain for with the code GKB223S, bringing it down to $285).

Is there a time limit for a auto insurance claim to be completed?
I was in a fender bender with another car in a parking lot a month ago. I filed a claim with the other guy's insurance agency the same day as the accident and have yet to be told if the claim was approved or denied. I spoke to my adjuster last week (as well as the week before) and they were still waiting on photos of the other vehicle. Is a month normal? The auto insurance company is Wawanesa. So my questions is...is there some kind of legal time limit for an insurance agency to approve/deny a claim in the state of California? Or might I end up waiting months to hear anything? Thanks.
Home owners insurance question?
My wife fell on our deck about 3 months ago, landed on her butt with both feet out in front of her. We went to the doctor because she was in alot of pain. The doctor said its spinal shock syndrome and just gave her pain meds, said it would heal in time. Well the pain never went away and last week she had Xrays and MRI done. Turns out she has three fractured vertabrea in her back. Shes a teacher and has crappy insurance( like most americans) so a couple of people suggested that I turn it into my home owners insurace. Before I call and look like a dummy has anyone else ever heard of this? I understand if someone else was hurt on my property but if the actual homeowner was hurt...just sounds strange to me. Anyway I see thousands of dollars in bills headed my way in the near future. If this is something that can be done I would like to hear about it. Thanks for your help""

Does my mom HAVE to be on MY car insurance?
So here's the deal -- I am getting a new car soon and my mom wants me to get my own insurance so her bill doesn't go up (she normally pays $70/month, but once I was added to her policy the bill went up $85 -- and that was with just ONE car). And now that I am getting my own car, my mom knows that the insurance is going to sky rocket and that is why she wants me to have my own insurance. However -- according to all these insurance companies, my mom and I HAVE to add each other as drivers onto our policies since we live in the same household. My problem is this -- why is it that when I am getting a quote online and I add my mom as a driver (but have her EXCLUDED from the policy), the price is $1183 every 6 months, yet when I DON'T include her as a driver at all, the price drops down to $854? Do I HAVE to add my mom onto my car insurance even though she has her own policy with a different company and won't be driving my car -- ever? Seriously, the only time she will be in my car is when I am driving, and god forbid I do get into an accident, this insurance company covers myself and any relative that resides in the household. So would I REALLY have to add my mom onto my car insurance even though she won't be driving my car? I don't want to pay $400 more for someone who will never drive my car...""

Who's insurance covers a hit and run driver in California?
My girlfriends car was hit by a hit and run driver in the state of California. The driver of the vehicle that hit her bailed from their car and fled the scene of the accident. The vehicle was not reported stolen however we are not sure at this time who was actually driving the vehicle. When the police arrived on scene they did retrieve the insurance information from the vehicle. My question is whos insurance covers this accident? will it be claimed against our uninsured motorist on our policy? though I know that uninsured motorist does not cover vehicular damage when the driver has not been positivley I.D'ed OR does the vehicle owners uninsured motorist coverage hit us as they are liable for damages caused by their vehicle? I need some general information about the cost of a motorcycle versus a car?
I have been wanting a motorcycle since I got my regular drivers license, but persuading my parents has proven difficult, as always. My mom seems to be fine with it but my dad, who is normally the one to crush such ideas, is actually considering it if I research the financial aspect of a motorcycle vs. a car. I would appreciate it if anyone had information about how much insurance would go up (I'm 17 so it's probably too expensive already), regular maintenance costs of motorcycles and cars, and anything else relating to the total cost of both. I have about 2500 dollars saved up, and my mom said she would personally loan me up to 1000 at a lower interest rate than the bank, but I could probably take out a loan on top of that, but I would rather avoid that if I can. I am specifically looking at sport bikes, especially the kawasaki ninja 250R because of what I heard, It's reliable, a great beginner's bike, and it's a lot cheaper than other companies I have researched. I simply want a motorcycle even if it's slightly more expensive than a car because I have always liked motorcycles, but nonetheless my father told me to research the financial side of things, so any information is greatly appreciated. And by all means, if I am misinformed about anything like my notion on the ninja 250R, please tell me.""
What size alloy wheels will change the insurance of a car (read details)?
right i've been looking at cars to buy for ages now and as I'm a seventeen year old boy insurance is ridiculous as it is. Finding cars that i can afford to buy and insure is hard. I have found a few 'perfect' cars, however a couple of them have alloy wheels instead of the standard manufacture ones. I will quote my insurance website so you can help me out: Replacement of factory fitted wheels with Alloys of the same size this doesn't alter my insurance quote one bit. Replacement of factory fitted wheels with wheels / tyres of a non standard size or specification This means i cannot get insured at all; they won't have me with them. So my question is, if a 1998 Peugeot 306 has 16 inch white wolfrace alloys, does this mean i can't get insured or not? This might be a stupid question, just want to get it right, thanks for you time, means a lot Alex.""

I just received a letter from Capital One Auto Finance saying that my new insurance policy is inadequate. I upped the comprehensive and collision deductible from $500 to $2500, which saves me over $400 dollars a month. ""Can I cancel my Health insurance at work, because it is too expensive?""
We enrolled for Health insurance thru my husbands work, and we were not told how much the payments would be. We were told to wait and see what they took out of his paycheck, and that would be the payment. Now we are paying over $500 a month, for a family of four, and on only one income. We are unable to pay our bills like water, and electric, and have to make considerable cuts in our grocery shopping. We decided to cancel our insurance, and get our kids on the state program, but when my husband asked the HR department about cancelling insurance due to financial hardship, they told him he would have to wait 6 months until it was open enrollment. We can't wait that long. Are they allowed to do this?""
How much is insurance for an Eagle Talon?
I need a new car, and I found a great deal on a 95 Eagle Talon, but my dad says that the insurance would be too high since I recently got into a car accident, and I'm only 19 years old, and because of course, it's kind of a sports car. Does anyone know about how high the insurance would be for someone living in Missouri? Any help appreciated.""

If youre at fault, theres no injuries. Approximatley $1500 damage done to the other car and minor scratches done to your own. Also, would it be better not to make a claim to your own vehicle if the damage is so minor? Or would it even have an impact on future rates?""

How do you switch insurance on your car if you get another one?
1) How much paperwork is involved. I drive a 92 Lebaron that is not too far from dying. I would like to buy a car within the next year and make monthly payments. 2) Is it really just a phonecall with my agent? 3) Do I get to keep my license plate? 4) What happens to my excise tax?--Do I have to inform my town hall of my new vehicle? Do I still get billed for my old car?
