*-*rambling self-indulgent speculation fic thing*-* (in which I enjoy thinking about Ignis and Regis and their weird as hell relationship) (and also about how the whole Kingsglaive engagement announcement went down) (and also about Ignoct in general)
Ignis hasnât been formally summoned by the king in years, much less in the middle of the night.
He squints at the alert on his phone, then sits up and puts on his glasses to read it. Meeting the king in his personal chambers? Has something happened?
He tries to stay calm as he gets out of bed. He sends off a quick message to Noctis, in the vain hope that heâs awake and can reassure Ignis that heâs alright.Â
He keeps checking his phone as he dresses. No answer.
Thatâs no cause for concern by itself: itâs late, Noctis is probably asleep.
The Imperial envoy earlier today was probably nothing to worry about.
Everythingâs probably fine.
âŚItâs too bad probably has never been a particularly comforting word for Ignis.
By the time he arrives at King Regisâs door, nodding his way past the guards and checking one more time to make sure his shirt is tucked in after dressing in the dark, Ignis has come up with no less than seven completely disastrous reasons he might have been called. None of them seem particularly likely, but itâs always important to be prepared for the worst.
âCome in, Ignis.â
Ignis does, closing the door quietly behind him.
King Regis is in his armchair, still dressed, his head resting on one hand. He looks exhausted.
Ignis bows in greeting.
No greeting is forthcoming  in return.
âI need your opinion.â
âOf course, Your Majesty.â
King Regis studies him with heavy, tired eyes. âIf you were to select a personal retinue for Noctis, a Crownsguard, whom would it contain?â
A Crownsguard? Thereâs already a Crownsguard, one which has been carefully vetted and trained. Why would Noctis require a separate one? âIâm afraid I donât understand,â Ignis says carefully.
King Regis doesnât seem surprised at his confusion. âIâm asking for a small group, perhaps three or four. People of balanced abilities, able to support Noctis in whatever situations may arise.â
Something is very wrong, here. But what? âGladiolus Amicitia has trained all his life to protect His Highness,â Ignis says, giving the obvious answer to play for time.
King Regis motions for him to continue talking. âAnd you approve of the result?â
âI do. He is a fine warrior, and deeply loyal. He has been a close companion to His Highness, and I consider him a friend as well.âÂ
âGood,â King Regis nods. âI would have chosen him anyway. Who else?â
Ignis frowns, thinking. Itâs difficult to choose given so little context. There are guards and attendants, people of ability, but their loyalty is to the crown first and foremost. Most of them have no relationship with Noctis as a person, and thus Ignis canât in good conscience entrust Noctis to them. There honestly arenât many people Noctis gets along with.Â
Or-? Well⌠Why not?Â
âPrompto Argentum.â
King Regis raises his eyebrows. âA name I would not have thought of.â
âHis combat experience is⌠minimal,â Ignis admits. âBut Your Majesty requested a balance of skills.â
âAnd what is Promptoâs skill in?â
âLifting His Highnessâs spirits.â
King Regis smiles.Â
âThere are few so adept,â Ignis says, feeling more confident in his choice by the second. âIf Your Majesty suspects challenges ahead, I would not suggest passing him over.â
âCould he be trained?â
âI believe so.â
âVery well.â King Regis adjusts himself in his chair, sitting up straighter. âI notice you have not yet named yourself.â
âŚOh. Like an imbecile, Ignis had considered himself a given. Whatever King Regis was planning for Noctis, Ignis hadnât been able to envision being left out. Now, heâs envisioning it acutely.Â
Is he expected to make a case for himself? Would it matter? Surely his qualifications are already known. âI would include myself, Your Majesty.â
King Regis sets his hands on his armrests, and Ignis suddenly feels like theyâre in the throne room instead of a bedchamber. His heart rate picks up. Heâs been preparing for disaster since he first got this message, and the change in the air indicates that his expectations may finally be fulfilled.
âAm I right in assuming,â King Regis says quietly, âthat your feelings for Noctis are beyond those which duty requires?â
Seven potential disasters.
This one hadnât even crossed his mind.
He thought heâd been so careful, never letting himself look too long, finding believable excuses for every visit and gift and touch. Drawing back whenever he had to, never giving Noctis the chance to notice his struggle or close the distance between them. Denying himself innocent moments, afraid of what the press might do even with too soft a smile.
He canât do anything about the fact that his chest aches sometimes when Noctis says his name.
âHis Highness has been- is-â damn it, damn it, has always been⌠dear to me. As he is to many who know him, I have no doubt.â
King Regis hums, his face unreadable. âBut perhaps not in the same way?â
Ignis will be removed from duty, that isnât even a question.Â
Is that what this has been? Was King Regis looking for Ignisâs input regarding his own replacement? People who could support Noctis until a new advisor could be arranged?
Heâll be sent away from the Citadel.
God. Heâll never see Noctis again.
âYour Majesty, please,â Ignis says, head swimming in desperation. âI have never acted out of accordance with my position, I swear it. I am a faithful steward to His Highness. I hope to have done well by him, and by you. I would never-â
âPeace,â King Regis says, looking genuinely surprised at Ignisâs outburst. âI did not call you here to condemn you.â
Then, why? Why? What has this been about? What need is there for a specialized guard? What does it matter whether Ignis is so pathetically in love that he could cry?Â
Ignis prides himself on maintaining an understanding of both world politics and the affairs of Insomnia, but heâs lightheaded and his face is hot and he cannot figure out why he was called to this meeting.
âThe Empire has called for a peace treaty. It requires a marriage between Noctis and Lady Lunafreya of Tenebrae.â
Oh.
Ignis has been choosing an escort.Â
To Noctisâs wedding.
âThe press will know, come morning,â King Regis says, almost gently.
So, this was a kindness. Ignis will be spared dealing with his shock in public. Heâs grateful - or, as grateful as can be managed in his current state.
King Regis rubs at his eyes. âThere is another provision, as well.â
Peace with Niflheim. Noctis engaged. And thereâs more? Ignis stares at the far wall, clutching his hands behind his back, trying to school his expression.
âYou have no interest?â The bitter tone is a surprise. Ignis looks at King Regis, who isnât looking back at him. The kingâs hand is still over his eyes. âAs advisor to the crown,â he continues, voice distant and frustrated, âyou have no opinion on this treaty?â
Ignis doesnât know what his king expects from him. Itâs all he can do to keep his face impassive. âI would not presume-â
âBy all means, presume!â King Regis laughs, a sound as dry as paper tearing. âYou have always been dutiful. Tell me, Ignis, remind me. What is my duty?â
Ignis cannot do this right now. Not when heâs already wondering what Noctis will look like on his wedding day. Not when heâs imagining a lifetime of training heirs to the throne in history and etiquette, children with their motherâs healing hands and Noctisâs beautiful eyes. He feels like someoneâs carved a portion out of his chest, the part that dealt with breathing. âThe line of Lucis protects the Crystal until the King of Light comes,â he recites numbly.
âThe Crystal,â King Regis says, almost snaps. âThe Prophecy. And my son? My people? Do I not have an obligation to them?â
âYour Majesty,â Ignis says slowly, fighting for competence, âI donât know what choices you may be facing, nor do I expect you to confide in me. Your people trust you to fulfill your duties in the best way you know. As I will fulfill mine to your son.â
King Regis stares at him for a long moment, then seems to settle, fatigue draining the tension from his features once more. âWe must all make our sacrifices. Is that what you mean to say?â He sighs and passes his hand over his face. âYou have been good to him, Ignis. In ways I could never have hoped for. I pray that you will continue to stand by him in the days ahead.â
âAlways,â Ignis says. âIn all things.â
âA promise not made lightly now, with the future uncertain.â
âThe future has never been certain. And I have never been one to take things lightly, Your Majesty.â
King Regis nods to him in gratitude. âYou may go,â he says quietly.
As desperate as he is to leave, Ignis stops with one hand on the door. He turns back. It would be impertinent to ask, but⌠âHave you told him?â
âNo,â King Regis says.
Ignis bristles invisibly. âDo you intend to?â
âIf I donât, you will, wonât you? Even if asked not to.â
Yes. Yes, he will. As much as Ignis has just panicked about being fired and thrown out⌠Noctis is not going to find out about his own engagement from the news.Â
King Regis smiles sadly. âDonât answer, please. Iâd hate to have a member of the new Crownsguard penalized for misconduct.â
Even after the utter mess this conversation has been, at least Ignis still has his place by Noctisâs side. If sixteen years in the palace have earned him the leniency shown tonight, perhaps he can push it just a bit further. Just this once. âYou should be the one to tell him, Your Majesty.â
King Regis knows this, surely. It still takes him a long time to nod. âBring him to me.â
â
Ignis lets himself into Noctisâs apartment. Itâs so familiar, the routine of it, the reassurance of having the key. Heâs spent more of his waking life here than in his own rooms, these last few years. He knows every shelf and cupboard, knows the view from the balcony, knows the haphazard organization of the spare closet where his extra clothes are hung beside Noctisâs formal suits.
He doesnât bother with the lights - he can find his way around in the dark.
Itâs so strange to think this life is almost over.
Noctis is asleep, as Ignis had suspected, but he apparently didnât make it to his bed. Heâs curled up on the sofa like a cat, still in his clothes, the lights of the city casting shadows across his face.
Ignis kneels beside him. Heâd like to smooth back Noctisâs hair from his forehead, or touch his cheek. Heâd like to stave off waking him, to take a few moments and memorize how peaceful he looks.
Indulgences he wonât allow himself.
âNoct,â he says gently, one hand on Noctisâs shoulder. âWake up, please.â
That wonât do it. It never has. At least Ignis can convince himself heâs trying, though.
âNoctis,â Ignis repeats, rubbing his hand up and down Noctisâs arm. âYour father wants to speak with you.â
Noctis blinks up at him through his messy hair, his eyes bleary. âHuh?â
Of course. The one time in their lives Ignis doesnât want him to wake up.
How many more chances like this will he get? Theyâll be few and far between after the wedding, surely.
âHello,â Ignis whispers, his throat thick. He doesnât pull his hand away.
Noctis frowns, pushing himself back against the sofaâs armrest. âIggy?â
Ignis shuts his eyes. That ache in his chest, again. Does Noctis know? He has no idea. There have been moments, handfuls of heartbeats where heâs felt there might have been somethingâŚ
Not that it matters now. Not that it ever did.
Noctisâs hand settles tentatively atop Ignisâs.
Ignis opens his eyes, grateful for the dark room, sure that his face is crumpling.
âYou okay?â Noctis asks quietly. Still soft and half-asleep, but so sincere.
âYes,â Ignis says. âYes, of course.â He draws his hand back slowly, Noctisâs fingers trailing over his own as he pulls away. God, he wishes he could feel it. His damned gloves - never mind that this is precisely the sort of thing theyâre meant to protect against. âYouâve been summoned.â
Noctisâs face goes tight. He rubs at his eyes. âYou know why?â
âI do,â Ignis says, feeling horribly guilty. âBut I think your father should be the one to tell you.â
Noctis looks like he wants to argue. âItâs bad, huh?â
Ignis has no idea whether Noctis will consider it âbad.â Perhaps heâll be perfectly content with the news. âI donât have all the details.â
âItâs fine,â Noctis says, in a flat voice that means it isnât. He sits up and starts scanning the room, presumably looking for his shoes. âI know youâd get in trouble.â
Itâs not about that. Not at all. But Ignis canât explain.
He finds Noctisâs shoes at the side of the sofa, where they always are. âIâm sorry,â he says quietly as he hands them over.
Noctis pauses before putting them on, staring at Ignisâs face. âIt⌠really is bad.â
Ignis curses himself, forcing his expression back to neutrality. âI recommended Prompto for an official position.â
Noctis knows heâs changing the subject. It works anyway. His eyes brighten and the corners of his mouth turn up. âYeah?â
âDo you suppose heâll accept? Heâll have to be fitted for a uniformâŚâÂ
Noctis laughs, his face warm and bright and beautiful as he leans over to tie his shoes. âOh, heâs gonna lose it.â
Despite everything, Ignis canât help but smile back.

My list of X-Files inspired BBC Sherlock fic prompts
I recently finished reading @88thparallelââs fabulous âWritten in Ashesâ, a BBC Sherlock fic inspired by the X-Files episode Demons. Iâm a huge X-Files fan myself, and the idea of adapting an XF story into a Sherlock one sent me down a rabbit hole. I decided to compose a list of ideas, all up for grabs, for X-Files plots that can be adapted in interesting ways to a BBC Sherlock casefics.
Below youâll find a list of X-Files episode with their original description, and some suggestions based on my knowledge of the two shows of what makes the plot an interesting one to write. As I mentioned, these ideas are PROMPTS, suggestions - feel free to write them. In fact itâll be my honor! Let me know if and when you do (I might even create a collection for them in AO3).
Ice (1x07) - Mulder and Scully investigate the death of an Alaskan research team. Isolated and alone, the agents and their accompanying team discover the existence of extraterrestrial parasitic organisms that drive their hosts into impulsive fits of rage. Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: extreme nature adventures (mountains, snow, remote research facilities); isolated together with strangers in a distant location (Ice was supposed to be a bottle episode); a lot of suspense as Mulder and Scullyâs trust in each other is put to the test (a handgun showdown), physical inspections rife with sexual tension, ooo!Â
Darkness Falls (1x19) - Mulder and Scully are called in to investigate when a team of loggers disappear without a trace. Initially suspecting eco-terrorism, the agents find themselves trapped by a seemingly ancient menace lurking in the woods. According to Wikipedia, âChris Carter was inspired to write this episode based on an interest in dendrochronology (sic? thatâs how itâs spelled in wikipedia), a subject that involves analyzing annual growth rings found in non-tropical tree species.â An interesting topic to develop! Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: Just like in Ice, opportunity to write magnificent nature descriptions; also like in Ice, Mulder and Scully have to fend to themselves against the âothersâ; wonderful quotes such as âRugged manly-men. In the full bloom of their manhood.â and âCome on, Scully. It'll be a nice trip to the forest." A Three Garridebs moment could work here!
Pusher (3x17) - Ah, Pusher. An early Vince Gilligan classic! Mulder and Scullyâs assistance is requested for a case involving a man, who goes by the pseudonym "Pusher", seemingly capable of bending people to his will. The suspect uses his mysterious abilities to manipulate Mulder into a dangerous end game. Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: Many parallels can be found between Modell and Eurus and or Moriarty; the game of cat and mouse in hopes of luring Mulder as the end game is quite similar to the TFP/TGG; the final game of Russian roulette with Mulder at the end is a classic MSR scene which could be lovely to write for John and Sherlock (Gillian is amazing with that One Tearâ˘Â while she threatens Modell); an opportunity to instill a fear of a very specific shade of blue in your readers; a chance of a sequel, since Modell returns with a vengeance in Kitsunegari.
Jose Chung's From Outer Space (3X20) - Mulder and Scully hear, and promptly investigate, a story about an alien abduction of two teenagers. Each witness provides a different version of the same facts. Within the episode, a thriller novelist, Jose Chung, writes a book about the incident. Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: Humor! Lots and lots self-aware, meta-type inner-jokes humor as an observant book writer describes Mulder/Sherlockâs many weird traits.
Avatar (3x21) - Assistant Director Walter Skinner  is accused of murdering a prostitute, Mulder and Scully investigate to determine the truth behind what happened. Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: A fine chance to turn Skinner into Sholto or one of Johnâs other army friends (Skinner discusses trauma from his days in Vietnam in this episode, which could be adapted to Afghanistan). John Asks for Sherlockâs help on behalf of Sholto/said friend and thereâs a thrilling prospect of some good old jealousy :) *After writing this I kinda fell in love with this idea and I might attempt writing this, but Iâm absolutely not claiming this exclusively! If you like the idea go ahead!
Paper Hearts (4X08)Â - Another Vince Gilligan episode, my go-to one these days for when I miss the show and need a good dose of Mulder and Scully. I can go on and on about why I love this episode but Iâll spare you from that right now ;) Mulder and Scully find that a child killer who Mulder had helped to apprehend several years earlier had claimed more victims than he had confessed to; and in the resulting investigation, learn that the killer is now claiming to have killed Mulder's sister Samantha. Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: The Alice in Wonderland theme in the episode is somewhat reminiscent of the Hansel and Gretel theme from TRF so Moriarty could be one way to go; another way to go is have Eurus as a villain in a TFP plot fix-it (if you find the Sherrinford plot exaggerated), with Sherlockâs hope of finding Victorâs body by the end of the game.
Zero Sum (4x21) - In the episode, a case Mulder is asked to investigate is covertly covered up by the agents' boss Walter Skinner, who has made a sinister bargain with The Smoking Man. Scully is missing in this episode (Mulder cites her cancer treatments; Gillian Anderson was filming something else at the time). Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: A wonderful opportunity for a Lestrade-as-Skinner story! (and youâre given a fine chance to write a Lestade naked with nothing but pants situation); Mulder is a bit lost without Scully in this episode so thatâs added background Johnlock angst; the story can happen when John is away, either during his honeymoon or after Mary dies.
The Pine Bluff Variant (5x18)Â - This is an underrated episode which I quite like, personally. Scully grows suspicious of Mulder when she thinks he may be helping a terrorist organization. Scully begins to wonder if he is now a traitor to the FBI. It is eventually revealed that Mulder is working as a mole in the group, and he is trying to stop them before they are able to use a biological weaponâthat may have been created by members of the U.S. governmentâwhich causes rapid degeneration of human flesh. Cool plot points you might enjoy: alternating POVs between Sherlock and John; a lot of tension between John and Sherlock while John is suspicious; Mycroft recruiting Sherlock to appear as a traitor.
Triangle (6x03) - What can I possibly say about Triangle that hadnât been said before? Cool plot points you might enjoy: An AU-within-AU opportunity - a chance for John and Sherlock to meet in a WW2 era, saved by rebel-Nazi Lestrade, Sherlockâs irregulars are The Lone Gunmen, a kiss, a punch, âYouâre my one in five billionâ (remember when there 5 billion people on this planet?) :) If you do write this, please make sure present John and past John pass each other by and get a strange, tingling sensation as a result! Itâs one of my favorite scenes in the entire show.
Dreamland I & II (6x04 and 6x05) - Mulder and Scully visit Area 51. But when the agents witness the flight of a mysterious craft, Mulder and a member of the Men in Black switch bodies, unbeknownst to the others. In part two, Scully begins to suspect that her partner's strange behavior is more than it appears to be, while Mulder fights to return his life to normal before it is too late. Cool plot points you might enjoy: Humor, humor and more humor. Mostly Morris Fletcher trying to bed John (=Scully) who promptly pulls a gun on him. That should be an awesome scene to write in and of itself. And letâs not forget âLately, for lunch, you've been having this six-ounce cup of yogurt, plain yogurt, into which you stir bee pollen because you're on a bee pollen kick even though I tell you you're a doctor and you should know better.â as well as âIâd kiss you if you werenât so damn ugly.â
Tithonus (6x09) - Another underrated episode. I think it deals with the theme of deathâs inevitability rather beautifully. Scully learns that she, but not Mulder, is being given a chance to prove her worth at the FBI, andâpaired with a new partnerâshe investigates a crime scene photographer with an uncanny knack for arriving just in time to see his victims' final moments. What she does not expect, however, is for Death to play a role himself. Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: John exploring on his own, for one reason or another, attached to another investigator (things happen!); this episode further explores a theory referred throughout the show since Clyde Bruckmanâs Final Repose, that Dana Scully is immortal (she seems to avoid death in this episode as well). Itâs an Appointment in Samarra sort of story.
Monday (6x15)Â - Mulder and Scully are stuck in a deadly time loop. Itâs a story that writes itself! Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: Sherlock or John having a really bad morning, over and over again.
Alpha (6x16) -Â Mulder and Scully investigate several killings blamed on an Asian dog called the Wanshang Dhole, thought to be extinct. Mulder and Scully join an obstinate Sheriff, a seemingly eccentric hunter, and a reclusive canine expert to find it. However, there is more mystery to the expert than meets the eye. Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: I enjoy this episode because it has some gentle but obvious MSR moments. Scully is suspicious (and low-key jealous) of Karin Berquistâs involvement in the case and it colors her opinion of the investigation. A key quote in this episode, preformed softly and beautifully by Gillian, is: âShe's enamored of you Mulder. Don't underestimate a woman. They can be tricksters, too.â
The Unnatural (6x17) - This is a weird ass episode, letâs admit it. This is DDâs love story to baseball and itâs silly and sometimes boring/slow. BUT, it has lovely MRS moments. Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: The structure of story within a story (Mulder retells his time spent with Arthur Dales who tells him the story of Josh Exley) is interesting enough. The opening and closing scenes are lovely as well of course!
X-Cops (7x12) - Mulder and Scully are interviewed for the Fox reality television program Cops during an X-Files investigation. Mulder, hunting what he believes to be a werewolf, discovers that the monster terrorizing people instead feeds on fear. While Mulder embraces the publicity of Cops, Scully is more uncomfortable about appearing on national television. Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: Itâs your chance to write a Sherlock crossver fic about an X-Files crossover episode. If thatâs not cool, I donât no what is.
Hollywood A.D. (7x18) - Letâs admit it, Hollywood A.D is not a good episode, as funny as it is. This episode was one of the first signs the show had lost its edge, possibly because they thought this would be their truly-this-time last season. However, it IS funny and gave rise to fans claims that by this point, Mulder and Scully were Definitely Sleeping Together. Wayne Federman, an entrepreneurial Hollywood producer and college friend of Walter Skinner picks up the idea for a film based on the X-Files, however Mulder and Scully find that the level of realism in their fictional portrayal is somewhat questionable. Meanwhile, during the filming of the movie, Mulder and Scully research the mysterious "Lazarus Bowl", an artifact that supposedly has the exact words that Jesus Christ spoke to raise Lazarus from the dead recorded on its surface. Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: Lots of inner-jokes and crack humor, many fluffy moments, the chance to imagine whoâll play Lestrade, Sherlock and John in a BBC Film, Lazarus could refer to The Fall(!), which could be the plot to said film.
The X-Files: I Want to Believe - Mulder and Scully have both left the FBI, but when an FBI agent is mysteriously kidnapped, and a former priest who has been convicted of being a child molester claims to be experiencing psychic visions of the endangered agent, they reluctantly accept the FBI's request for their paranormal expertise. I know, I know. Donât look at me like that. I didnât like it either at first, but a) compared to the revival seasons, itâs not that bad and b) in terms of established relationship angst, itâs a fucking goldmine. Cool plot points you might enjoy writing: A chance to write a post-recent-retirement fic for Sherlock and John, with a lot of tension in their established relationship based around Johnâs reluctance to return to their lives as investigators. IWTB has quotes like âThis isn't my life anymore, Mulder. I'm done chasing monsters in the dark.â and âThis stubbornness of yours, it's why I fell in love with you.â  So there! Donât dismiss the idea so quickly!
Wow, this turned out longer than I expected! I hope you liked them, and even if you donât write anything - I definitely enjoyed this exercise.
My finished fics are ready to be read on AO3 :)

Homespork Act 2: The Racism of the Conductorâs Baton (Part 3)
BRIGHT:Â Also, the prompts in Johnâs head are back and are making increasingly strident demands. Namely, they want John to follow Nannasprite to the cookies. John isnât too keen on this idea. Heâs so not-keen on it that he fails to notice Rose whacking him in the head with a box. Frustrated by his lack of compliance, the voice devolves into insults. Iâm not sure why the Wayward Vagabond is so insistent on this? Itâs not like he can eat the cookies.
On the whole this is a really good sequence, I think. It lays out some basic background information for the reader and John, and itâs paced pretty well.
Back in the future, an agitated slip of the finger causes a cupboard door to open in the Wayward Vagabondâs hideout. Out fall a few tins of food and a heavy tome of HUMAN ETIQUETTE.
Rose has updated her GameFAQs walkthrough with the new information from Nannasprite. Weâre getting something of a motif here: Cut-aways to the Wayward Vagabond are followed by a walkthrough update. Itâs a nice little pattern.
Rose also speculates on the prototyping process and on why the prototypings of other players worldwide have not affected Johnâs foes, and comes to the conclusion that each client/server pair -- or daisy chain -- spawns its own copy of the Incipisphere, or âsessionâ. Sheâs also caught up in rewriting her work. Couldnât the reader go somewhere else? Or somewhen else?
Why yes, the reader can. Namely the reader can jump back to Roseâs birthday, where sheâs having a conversation with GG.
This conversation reinforces that thereâs something funny about GG. She asks about Johnâs present the moment Rose opens it, and Rose isnât surprised by this. GG also knows without being told that Roseâs dead pet is a male cat, and sheâs been working on her birthday present for John for years.
Finally, she asks what Rose would say if GG told her she knew a game that could bring said cat back to life.
TT: If someone told me that, I would regard the remark with a great deal of skepticism. TT: If that someone was you, on the other hand, then I would have to ask preemptively: TT: Is that someone you? GG: yes that someone is me!!!!!!!! GG: i just thought you might find it interesting TT: So what is this game?
Whatever strange abilities GG has, Rose is familiar with her knowing things she shouldnât, and trusts her even when she makes claims that sound impossible.
CHEL:Â Note, also, that here GG is the one who brings up the game, while in an early convo with John set chronologically after this one she asked âlol! whats sburb?â This is not an inconsistency. Again, it comes up later. We end up saying that a lot. Sorry.
BRIGHT:Â Also: Rose knows John well enough to guess that he was wearing a disguise when he talked to her earlier -- but still interprets his gift of knitting needles and yarn as a subtle jab at her habit of making analytical comments, much as her mother. GG points out that he probably didnât mean it that way. Later, Rose says sheâll make him a gift with strong sentimental value as a dig at him, but admits she doesnât really mean it that way when GG points it out. Then again, this takes place some months before the comic starts, and may show how Rose and Johnâs relationship has evolved.
Back in Daveâs home, the sun is beating down. Meteors pepper the city, and smoke is rising. Dave captchalogues his katana, and sets out in search of his brotherâs copy of the game.
Dave elaborates a little on the concept of irony that he and his brother live by. His brother is awesome, apparently. Dave can only hope to one day reach those heights of irony.
The puppet theme from earlier continues, with puppets strewn around the living room where Bro lives and sleeps. Among them are a Mr. T puppet, which is wearing a leather thong and handcuffed to a pantsless Chuck Norris puppet. What makes it a little disturbing is that this is just lying out in the living room, which Dave presumably goes into all the time. Daveâs narration here sounds a lot like heâs trying to convince himself that these things are totally cool, no, really. He canât see Lil Cal anywhere, though...
CHEL: Other puppets are the iconic Smuppets, possibly a portmanteau of âsmutty puppetsâ, vaguely humanoid nude puppets with enormous behinds and phallic noses. There are implications that they are intended for non-PG purposes. Further implications are that the leaving of obscene material around the home has been going on for all of Daveâs life. For the record, intentionally showing pornography or sexual aids to children is classed as a form of sexual abuse. Casually leaving them lying around the house in front of kids long-term, well, the motive may not be malicious but I doubt a jury would care. It certainly counts as neglect. The popular fanfic Brainbent explored the damage this kind of thing could inflict on a kid in a realistic setting.
Also note, there is no hint of Dave having or ever having had parents, not even a photo in the background or something. The immediate assumption would most likely be that theyâre dead, but Broâs strangeness might also suggest estrangement - behaviour like that would probably result in oneâs parents not talking to one anymore, though they most likely wouldnât leave a child in a place like that if they were around. We find out the truth later, and itâs even weirder.
BRIGHT:Â Between one panel and the next, Lil Cal appears atop a speaker box. Dave is fine with this. Totally fine.
CHEL:Â For the record, this is Lil Cal:
Not something one would be very happy about finding behind one, is he?
BRIGHT:Â He plays a bit on the Xbox, gives Cal a fistbump, and then checks out his brotherâs computer. Itâs password-protected, but Dave knows the password, and Bro knows he knows it, and Dave knows this, and itâs all totally cool.
One of Broâs websites is a puppet pornography website. Apparently this is popular enough to bring in thousands of dollars a month, and Smuppets are a multi-billion-dollar-per-year enterprise. Time for our next point:
Magic-onomics - wherein charactersâ funds issue from nowhere Half-baked attempts to justify a protagonistâs mystery money can also backfire. Explanations should amount to more than âSomehow Rain had lots of money.â Giving Rain an inheritance, or explaining that she recently gave up her job at a top law firm to pursue her art, will work only where these things feel like part of the world of the novel.
Bro and Dave live in a crappy apartment in which Bro doesnât even have his own bedroom, instead sleeping on the futon in the living room where he works. Yet they have the funds to spend on swords (not cheap) and expensive turntables. The Con Air bunny prop Dave bought for John sold in real life for almost $1,300.
And how the heck do smuppets bring in multiple billions of dollars a year? Thatâs a niche market, even if Bro is the only supplier. (Which he wouldnât be â if itâs worth that much, someone else would want in on the market.)
CHEL:Â Even if said market is fairly disturbing. If thereâs enough people who like it enough to buy it, thereâll be people comfortable with supplying it.
BRIGHT: Their income shouldnât be anywhere near that high, even with puppet pornography adding to the revenue stream. If we grant that in this universe it is that high, then they should be living somewhere more comfortable.
HOW NOT TO WRITE A WEBCOMIC: 13
CHEL: In order for this to actually work as stated, not only would the puppets have to appeal to everyone on the planet, but there would probably have to be a lot more people on the planet than there actually are. Iâm pretty sure itâs an exaggeration for humour, but considering the inconsistencies with their income status as presented, itâs still a bit shaky.
Itâs also worth another count, because this is basically a handwave to mean the characters presented aesthetically as poor are still as financially secure as is necessary for writing the scenes Hussie wants to:
WHITE SBURB POSTMODERNISM: 6
If the comic was presented as a non-serious cartoon for the whole story, this would pass without comment, but when oneâs trying to be dramatic and include real stakes, I think one needs to apply real stakes to everyday things too.
BRIGHT:Â Then again, itâs possible that their financial status is higher than the apartment would suggest, and Bro just chooses to spend his money on katanas and expensive equipment rather than upgrading. (And/or is lying to Dave about their income.) That might not be out of character given what we see of him later. But overall, this is a mess.
FAILURE ARTIST:Â Maybe the Smuppets is a money laundering business.
CHEL:Â A lot of people would read that fanfic.
The theory that the guardians knew the game was coming might explain why he chose to spend so much on swords, at least. Heâd know Dave would need them. Not so much of an explanation for everything else though. Considering the weirdness thatâs going on, I could imagine Bro not wanting attention drawn to it, but wouldnât hiding weirdness be much harder in a flat than in a house set off some distance from neighbours?
For that matter, whereâs John getting the money for movie memorabilia? Later reveals show the Egbert family originally came from money but they donât seem to have that much to throw around now.
BRIGHT: Remember how Rose said earlier that she quite enjoyed Broâs websites? I think that counts as a point for CALL CPA PLEASEâŚ
FAILURE ARTIST:Â I question how pornographic the site really is. It might just literally be puppets being mashed together with no human body parts. A thirteen year old can surely see that.
BRIGHT:Â Fair point -- the page we see is teen-safe, at any rate.
CHEL: If it isnât actually sexual, that possibly makes the supposed popularity level even sillier. Fetishists need constant fresh material and there are probably people who donât have a specific puppet fetish who would ignore the puppets to look at the guy, but to keep up that level of popularity the viewers who donât have a puppet fetish would have to keep finding it funny long after most people would think the joke had worn off. Both options say disturbing things about the world this comic is set in and their tastes in either pornography or humour. At least Veronica Chaos appears onscreen with her puppet⌠(Link contains no porn but you probably donât want it on a work computer.)
For the record, I think Smuppets would actually make pretty bad sex toys. Plush is a porous material, so it would be hard to clean sticky substances out of it properly, and the phallic noses seem to be too floppy to use for penetration of a human orifice. Maybe that first point is why he brings in so much cash - the smuppets are single-use? People do use plush toys for masturbatory purposes, but usually when they canât find anything else to use, specific fetishes for them being rare, and generally donât use the soft parts as penetration toys.
Personally, I quite like the theory the kinkmeme brought up years ago; PlushRumps is actually an elaborate multimedia webcomic a la Homestuck itself. Now that I can see bringing in that much cash. Or possibly it just looks like this, which was made by the guy who wrote Thirty Hs (warning for eye injury and surreality):Â "Jumping!" (Watch on YouTube)
I could see Bro being that dude.
BRIGHT:Â And Dave admits, again, that he finds the puppet thing unsettling.
This is a pretty good depiction of someone trying to convince himself to be okay with something that freaks him out. He pesters John to distract himself from the puppets everywhere, and when he doesnât get a response, he pesters Rose. And Hussie once again repeats the entire blinking pesterlog we read fifty pages ago instead of just linking back to it.
GET ON WITH IT!: 6
CHEL: Just occurred to me; why is Dave so bothered by the puppets? I canât imagine that Bro suddenly started leaving them around when he hadnât before - in fact, I believe a later flashback shows infant Dave using a Smuppetâs nose as a pacifier (eww, god I hope it was a freshly-made unused one). Dave really ought to be used to the things by now. Then again, now heâs reaching his teens, heâs probably old enough to start realising this is weird and creepy on a deeper level. But then that brings up the same problem we had with John; doesnât he have any local friends he could have learned this from sooner? Though I could picture Bro not bothering to send him to school, and we do later learn there is quite possibly magic afoot in hiding the oddness of the Strider household. Thatâs a complicated theory and requires much more setup than we have here, though, so pin in that for later.
Also, the puppets thing counts for a point of ARE YOU TRYING TO BE FUNNY?, and Dave is in fact the reason we created that count. A kid in Daveâs situation in real life would be messed up, but so would a kid in the situations of the others (or at least the girls), and Daveâs situation seems to be taken more seriously than theirs, at least later on.
ARE YOU TRYING TO BE FUNNY?: 5
BRIGHT: Back to Rose, whoâs beating John over the head with a box in a futile effort to get his attention. She eventually gives up and deploys another piece of equipment called a Punch Designix, using the Shale John collected. Since she doesnât know what it does, she pesters John and asks him to experiment.
Unfortunately John has bigger problems to deal with: His garden is by this point overrun with imps, who are climbing on his tire swing and wearing his disguises. This is enough to snap him out of his Wayward Vagabond-induced state and get him to respond to Rose. They need to get those monsters off his pogo ride!
Fortunately, Rose is able to help by picking up the piano and dropping it on the imp. Less fortunately, the piano does not survive the experience. Neither does the imp.
The pogo ride seems fine, though.
John is reluctant to risk Nannaâs ghost cookies to go retrieve the grist, so Rose uses the pogo ride to transport it up to his room. Then she tells him to go find out what the Punch Designix does, while she works on building the house up to the gate. Apparently stairs cost a lot of grist to build. John makes a SBaHJ reference while Rose recoups the grist she used to build the catwalk earlier, sending an imp tumbling into the depths.
In the kitchen, Nannasprite has produced a lot of cookies. An imp tries to sneak one, and is blasted into grist by Nanna as a result.
John sets out on a hunt for imps and useful items, grabbing some shaving cream and his pogo ride, and launching his telescope out of the window. Amazingly, this proves relevant only a few pages later.
CHEL:Â Dad apparently keeps an entire cabinet filled with nothing but shaving cream. Rule of Funny, I know, but how fast does this guyâs beard grow?
BRIGHT:Â His living room is full of imps, who have taken a shine to the Cruxtruder and left cruxite dowels lying everywhere. Armed with hammer and shaving cream, John mounts his trusty steed and pogos his way to victory, which works amazingly well (read: works at all), until he slips on a cruxite dowel and lands flat on his back.
This is incredibly dangerous!
Acting on a polite prompt, John absconds into his Dadâs study, and Rose covers his retreat with the refrigerator, which levels up to FIVESTAR GENERAL ELECTRIC and earns 285 Boondollars.
Further extremely polite prompts ask John for a can opener. Despite the presence of two imps in the study with him, John stops to consider where to find one, while Rose takes out the imps with Dadâs safe. I donât think that counts as HURRY UP AND DO NOTHING, though, since itâs clearly supposed to be the joke.
Back in the future, the Wayward Vagabond munches on a few pages from the etiquette book. Rose updates her GameFAQs walkthrough with a series of images of Johnâs house in the Medium. She does refer to Colonel Sassacreâs as racist in one of these, but itâs not really much of a rebuttal.
CHEL:Â She experiments with building a bit more on Johnâs house; ladders prove cheaper to build than stairs, albeit harder to use safely. John eventually stops contemplating can openers to examine the Punch Designix, while Rose answers Daveâs angry rant about being buried in Smuppets. I think this may be another point for ARE YOU TRYING TO BE FUNNY, because in the context of a kid ranting about his brotherâs annoying hobby and his friend snarking back itâs hilarious, and it seems at this point to be presented as funny, but as discussed above the nature of Smuppets makes this rather creepy.
ARE YOU TRYING TO BE FUNNY?: 6 TG: i am enrobed in chafing, wriggling god fucking damned puppet pelvis TG: an obscenely long, coarse kermit cock is being dragged across my anguished face TT: Let's put this into perspective. You put up with the puppet prostate because you love it.
Okay, this I think could be a point for CALL CPA PLEASE. A child probably would make fun of another childâs discomfort with non-consensually being surrounded by sex toys on the grounds of not knowing better, but itâs unsettling to read.
CALL CPA PLEASE: 2
John discovers there are codes on the backs of his captchalogue cards, which can be entered into the Punch Designix to make punch cards. Punching the captchalogue card itself renders the item irremovable from it, but the punch card can, he guesses, be used to recreate the item via the Totem Lathe and Alchemiter. Before he can test this, Rose hurls a bathtub through the wall to kill some nearby imps; to be fair, when he checks his PDA, he sees he missed a message from her warning him about it. He messages her back and she says the precarious staircase up to the gate is ready. John is nervous and asks why she didnât build straight up through the hole in his dadâs bedroom ceiling.
EB: oh come on. what's the big deal, i'll just climb up and go right through! TT: Will you? EB: yeah, why not? TT: Are you saying you've never wondered what's in there? Or why it's been kept a secret from you? EB: well, i mean yeah... TT: Then trust me. You won't be going "right on through." EB: wait, are you saying there's something, like... EB: troubling in there? TT: I don't know. EB: what do you mean? what do you see in there? TT: I can't see in there. EB: oh. TT: But I don't have a very good feeling about it. EB: pfff... EB: whatever! EB: i think i can handle a few more stupid clown paintings.
Well, thatâs ominous.
Examining the destroyed safe, John finds a book about shaving, several old newspaper clippings about meteor strikes, and a much older copy of Colonel Sassacreâs book, possibly the one involved in the mysterious accident which caused Nannaâs death. Behind where the safe was, he finds an empty captchalogue card and a proud fatherly note from Dad, praising him for now being strong enough to lift the safe; presumably intended for several years in the future at least, since the safe is big enough to fit John inside it. The note further explains that John is now entitled to the contents of the safe, and provides the now-useless combination for the lock. Further sylladex shenanigans launch Sassacreâs book, killing an imp, and John heads up the stairs, but slips. As he precariously clings on, the hands and jesterâs motley of something much, much bigger than the imps start to emerge from the chasm...
Cut back to Dave, still searching for the beta and/or his brother, finding only that one of Broâs swords is missing. A brief shadowy flash takes the second sword from the wall too.
You know this drill all too well. Trouble's a brewin'.
Dave heads for the door, finding one of Broâs âironicâ comics pinned to it. The comic in question:
Erm.
TIER: Now that is, as the folks would say, unsettling.
FAILURE ARTIST:Â This is another work that Hussie created pre-Homestuck and decided to add. It was part of this drawing battle on a forum.
CHEL:Â It took me an embarrassingly long time to realise that was supposed to be Kermit. I was seeing it as a teddy bear, with the spiral cheeks as eyes and the eyes as ears.
TIER:Â . . . I was âliterally just nowâ years old when I realized that was supposed to be Kermit.
BRIGHT:Â Ditto!
CHEL:Â Me too, actually, it was after I saw it while posting it here. Before I thought it was Fozzie, drawn even worse than the rest of the comic.
Dave is fairly mellow about the comic as compared to his reaction to the puppets, but thinks that he â[doesnât] need to see this shit right nowâ. It looks like something a kid his age would either draw themselves or like (I know I would have loved it), but having things like this pasted randomly about your house would definitely be unsettling even so. He understands it as further irony, and thinks Bro is trying to annoy him with it as âsome weird gauntlet he's throwing down to see if you will "GET IT"â.
Worse than the comics, however, is whatâs in the kitchen. Weapons are piled up on every counter and the sink is full of fireworks. Dave considers this âawesomeâ, the implication again being that this has been normal for his whole life. Heâs really lucky heâs a cartoon character, thereâs no way a real kid would still be alive here. When he turns on the blender, a green puppet in it is shredded to pieces, releasing fake blood; inside the eye socket of a Jigsaw puppet on top of the microwave is a webcam, broadcasting the incident. Okay, again, we need to consider how âpornographicâ PlushRumps actually is to determine whether this is a problem. Videos of a kid shredding a puppet are harmless in and of themselves. If itâs actually being marketed as fetish material⌠ew. Dave appears just as unsettled by this as I am, enough so to behead the cam-puppet, so the implications arenât good.
More Smuppets spill out of the microwave, and then we go back into fucking sylladex shenanigans as Dave tries to collect every dangerous object in the room
GET ON WITH IT!: 7
Distracted by same, Dave fails to notice a silhouetted figure which is presumably his brother appearing briefly behind him, dropping Cal on the stovetop, and disappearing. Daveâs expression doesnât change on seeing it but he literally leaps a foot in the air. Poor kid, that is freaky. We also discover why Dave had juice in his closet way back; Bro uses the fridge as storage space for swords instead of comestibles, and cherry bombs in the icemaker.
⌠Okay, where does Bro keep his own food? Both humorously and actually abusive/neglectful guardians still require energy intake, you know. There are later hints that Bro himself is someoneâs puppet, but only in the figurative sense.
TIER:Â Dude probably has spots around the apartment to stash stuff, like how Dave has apple juice hidden away in his closet.
Figuring out how seriously we're supposed to be taking things can get tricky, especially with the Big Thing way later on in the comic putting earlier events in a new light upon rereading (well, mostly just stuff related to Dave).
CHEL:Â And if we are supposed to take it seriously, how the fuck is Dave alive? A real kid in this situation wouldnât have lived long enough to be traumatised.
