To be honest, it is not because he was busying himself, it's not because he didn't allocate a time for you--well, not entirely. It's because he was being Min Yoongi. He has your dentist appointment dates, your language classes, your volunteering works down at the orphanage and when. Everything. He also shifts his dermatologist appointment to fit yours. He does a lot of things that would ensure you two can spend some time together, even if its short. Because when it comes to you, he doesn't think twice. He would always put you first unless he really couldn't. Sometimes you realised that you were being too harsh on him, and cried your eyes out from guilt, apologizing and hugging him, telling him that you were sorry that you have such an impeccable attitude, telling him that he could leave if he wants to. Telling him that you're a horrible person to be married to, and he sighed. "How about you continue to be you, and let me deal with everything that comes with that..." He told you.

He knows more than anything that you loved him as hard as he loved you. And when it comes to him, it never really mattered how much you were hurting. Because as soon as he sets his feet home, he'll patch up whatever holes you have in your heart while he was missing. Yoongi is a sweet husband. He juggles work life and personal matters quite well although he might be struggling. But because you meet him halfway, marriage life has been really rewarding. You throw rough words for him to take but he knows your heart didn't mean any of it. That's why its possible to do laundries together, to cook and to do groceries together. He run errands without being told and does it rather effortlessly. And these makes up for all the time he couldn't be there for you. Yoongi always helps you make the bed, change the bed sheets, fluff the pillow while he rants about his work. Finally, you're having a piece of his thoughts. Finally, he is telling you what's bothering him, that makes him so annoyingly aloof when you know he is nothing like that. The shoe rack is left unfinished by the living room, next to the vase.

There will come a time that something has to go." You lay your head back on the couch, looking at the old taped vacuum, silently taking it on all of its services, all these years with you, "...How about us? Do we have an expiration date?" This week’s focus is on the philosophy behind justice and sustainability, stretching from the types of justice, to the importance of childhood education, to how we can be leaders of sustainability into our adult life. Chapter 25 in the textbook begins the discussion by looking at the various environmental worldviews and how we can become more sustainably literate. While it does a great job as an overview, the articles we read look at these topics much more indepthly.

Types of Environmental Justice

Intragenerational Justice

        “Intra” refers to a description that is on the inside. So, intragenerational justice refers to actions that are happening in the present to protect people in the present. An example of this is the Environmental Justice Movement: a conglomeration of informal ideologies spurred by environmentally concerned theories and practices with a focus on distributive fairness, investigating the social aspects of who is involved in environmental concerns and in what aspect-- who is causing issues, who is receiving them.

The modern movement came about from the merging of environmental concerns and the civil rights movement-- this link in understanding the suffering of people of color and of the environment has been recognized since the start. The movement acknowledges the disproportionate distribution of harmful effects to African Americans, Latinx Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, the working class, and the poor. The imbalances of environmental justice align so closely with those of all other forms of race.

Various studies have shown that there is a significant difference between how white and minority communities are treated by the EPA, with white communities getting better treatments; though criticisms and counter-studies have shown that it is not a matter of race, but rather income levels-- that industrial workers are hurt the most. Environmental justice is also reflected in language. I think that it is still a matter of race though. That’s where the recognition dimension of justice lies: accepting that there is an exclusionary history that has brought us to where we are today.[1]

Intergenerational Justice

Intergenerational justice refers to “the set of obligations the members of one generation may owe to people of other generations, past or future.”[2] The author of this article, Clark Wolf, discusses the proponents and opponents to the idea of helping future generations. How important are future generations? If they are not important at all, if we are truly only living in our moment, then we can do whatever we want. But we must want to allow others to have their own choices and be able to have happiness in their moments...sure, we can see as far as we can because we stand on the backs of technological giants, but also because we had the balance of the ecosystem for thousands of years by indigenous peoples…

        Wolf does a great job explaining the reasonings behind the group of people I have been calling the “nihilists” in past blogs in the section titled “Rights, Identity, and Skepticism About Intergenerational Justice.”[3] This also lines up with the end of the textbook chapter discussion on denial, indifference, and inaction.[4]The points are seemingly justifiable: why should we be putting so much stress on caring for ‘future generations’ when we could be living happily in the present?

         These questions are why it is so important to have young people at the frontlines of environmental action today. Unless the anarchists over at vhmt.com are globally successful with this next generation, there will always be new people on the planet vying for joy.[5] We were brought to life through community, and we must therefore support our communities, not only between humans, but among other species as well.

Interspecific Justice

        Interspecific justice occurs between different species. This idea shines through profoundly in Aldo Leopold’s “The Land Ethic,” where he states that “the land ethic enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants, and animals, or collectively: the land... the land ethic changes the role of homo sapiens from conquerer of the land-community to plain member and citizen of it.”[6] This aligns greatly with my writing in the beginning of the semester, where we explained our personal environmental worldview. We must work to eliminate suffering of not only humans but living beings today and in the future. This is possible through healing all the interconnections that built up the web sustaining living beings through the land. To do this, we must stop seeing the living beings and the land as means to an economic end. Leopold says explicitly that “the evidence had to be economic in order to be valid…[but] birds should continue as a matter of biotic right, regardless of the presence or absence of economic advantage to us.” [7] I agree with this, but I also see that humans are a cog in that machine as well—in some sense it is the reason I am in college. And ironically, if I were to follow one potential path and become an environmental consultant, my career would be based upon how many companies I can make eco-friendlier solely for the economic aspect of it. I have told my father, a dentist, that he should stop handing out free plastic toothbrushes after appointments and switch to toothbrushes of compostable material, but I have been unsuccessful as I have not yet found a loophole for a better economics of it. It isn’t that he doesn’t love nature, as he’s the one who taught me to appreciate the outdoors—but he does not feel the urgency to help the environment.

Lifelong Education

My visual transformation isn’t all that impressive. In fact, despite having a completely different body composition, I weigh more or less the same that I did six years ago.

My real transformation has occurred on the inside and in the way that I try to embody the Primal Blueprint principles in the way I live my life.

I first heard of Mark and his message about primal health back in 2013. At the time, my husband and I were living in a modest cabin in the woods of Northern Maine and the extent of my fitness routine was the obligatory jog now and then or some exercise videos that mostly involved bodyweight training. Our cabin had no electricity or running water which meant that we were gathering, cutting and stacking firewood by hand so that we could stay warm during the long winters. Turning manure, bending over in the garden, hauling hay for our goats and clearing woods for future pasture were serious back killing chores and we knew we needed to find a way to get stronger in order to support our active lifestyle. Coupled with this was my husband’s chronic GI distress and autoimmune condition, Reactive Arthritis, which led us down the road of research into how a grain-free, sugar free diet could improve those ailments.

As is often the case, primal nutrition and heavy lifting principles were deeply entwined from the very beginning of our journey towards optimal health. And as we cut out wheat and sugar, we also began learning the functional movements of the squat, deadlift and pull-up. With a manual treadmill we found in the barn, we regularly blasted ourselves with intervals after reading from you the importance of sprinting. Your fitness principles of walk far, run fast, lift heavy came so naturally to us and in the setting of the lush, Maine woods, it felt that much more primal to get in tune with our ancestral physiques.

You might imagine that the stronger and more fit we became, the more we wanted to eat better to support that. Before long, our backs felt bulletproof chopping and stacking piles of firewood. My husband’s arthritis improved. I was seeing the extra weight I had carried my whole life slip away. We had gone to the woods to seek a lifestyle where we could call the shots and pursue our healthiest existence. But in the process, we had the rude awakening that our bodies were the weakest link in the chain of health. Our minds were strong and our homestead was strong, but our bodies were not. And so when we saw the benefits of the Primal Blueprint massively improve our existence, it was like coming out of a bad dream and I woke up one morning thinking “hey, this is really something to live for.”

While I graduated college with a degree in writing, I never really had found my purpose or a career I was passionate about giving my 9 to 5 energy to. I always believed that I had a lot to share with the world, but couldn’t conceive of what avenue to take, but with this new primal lifestyle, I discovered a completely unexpected passion. Always the chubby book nerd my whole life, taking on sports in school out of social pressure and obligation but never out of true interest, here I was, suddenly wanting to pursue fitness and wellness as a career.

We ended up leaving our little homestead for my husband to travel down the long (and still not complete) road of becoming a Dentist. He studied for biochemistry and tests and I studied strength and conditioning in between my long hours at Starbucks. (Side note: I managed to make it 2 years working there without consuming sugar and my coworkers would always marvel at my dedication of turning down a free Frappuccino. I explained to them that eating primal, my energy was consistent throughout the day and better than ever and seeing the positive effects of my nutrition in my day to day life was all the motivation I needed to persist.) The years we spent studying for our individual pursuits, we also spend wrecking ourselves on the barbell and on the field doing sprints and without following any strict program, we simply tried to remember to walk far, run fast, lift heavy. Slowly and surely, our body composition improved and I took on my first personal training clients.

Now living in Salt Lake City, I think of myself more as a Strength Coach than a personal trainer and before walking that road I didn’t even realize there was a difference. I see my colleagues often get wrapped up in ideal programming principles and I try to remember the basics: pick up heavy stuff and put it overhead using good technique, train for explosive speed and go on long hikes outdoors.

I use my personal experience to help guide my athletes on the emotional journey of becoming strong and realizing their physical potential. I have so many people, primarily women, come to me saying they want to lose weight. But as we begin working together, they quickly see that in fact their goal is much more complex that a number on the scale. They learn that it feels good to get strong and learn how to move in ways they never thought possible. I see the look of fear in their eyes at approaching a back squat for the first time and I recognize that look of fear because it’s the same one I felt when I started my journey. I see timid women who hate their bodies do a pull-up for the first time after working hard for a year and then it’s like poof… now they love their bodies because they unlocked this talent for strength they never knew they had. When that happens, the number on the scale matters so much less to them because now they have a performance goal. Now they are pursuing health rather than weight loss.

Although I am not strictly a Primal Blueprint coach, I still hold onto those principles while I teach other people how to lift and what strategies they can use to build balanced nutrition. I encourage them to seek nutrient-dense foods rather than counting macros or calories and to eat when hunger ensues naturally rather than adhering to six small meals a day. I feel confident coaching strategies like Keto and Intermittent Fasting because I have done the research on the health benefits and have the anecdotal evidence to back it up from my own experience. I am always trying to do what your blog did for me, which is to teach them ways they can figure out what health uniquely means to them. I still try to embody the idea that you instilled in me: study how our ancestors thrived to learn how to seek our healthy existence in a world that can often be toxic.

My transformation doesn’t come through in a before and after photo, but I believe I have gained a million times more than if I had lost 100 lbs and cured 10 autoimmune conditions. I discovered my life’s path and spend every day trying to guide others to do the same.

Research shows that in the long term, procrastination significantly decreases our health, wealth, and happiness. For example, in a survey of 10,000 people by Carleton University’s Procrastination Research Group, 94 percent of respondents said that procrastination negatively affects their happiness. A full 19 percent said the effect is extremely negative.

The flip side of procrastination is motivation. According to Psychology Today, “motivation is literally the desire to act and move toward a goal.” When you’re building a business, that desire is essential — and it can also be infuriatingly evasive.

But success doesn’t always start with extraordinary motivation. Just like a snowball gathering speed, sometimes motivation builds after we begin. I’ve experienced this phenomenon firsthand. For example, I’m not a highly motivated person. I don’t leap out of bed at 6 am, I don’t love swinging kettle bells, and I don’t read 100 books a year.

Tory Higgins, co-authors of “Focus: Use Different Ways of Seeing the World to Power Success and Influence,” explain that motivational focus affects how we approach life’s challenges. “Promotion-focused people see their goals as creating a path to gain or advancement and concentrate on the rewards that will accrue when they achieve them,” Grant Halvorson and Higgins write in Harvard Business Review.

Just Do It: How to Work When You Really Don’t Feel Like It

Avoiding daily tasks can crush our happiness, hurt our bank accounts, and even damage our health — but you can learn how to move forward.

Procrastination hurts. Hitting next episode on Netflix can provide momentary relief, but it’s a fleeting high. Whether you’re avoiding a sink full of dishes, a new presentation deck, or a date with the treadmill, delay has the power to transform a simple task into a Mount Everest of a to-do list.

Research shows that in the long term, procrastination significantly decreases our health, wealth, and happiness. For example, in a survey of 10,000 people by Carleton University’s Procrastination Research Group, 94 percent of respondents said that procrastination negatively affects their happiness. A full 19 percent said the effect is extremely negative.

The flip side of procrastination is motivation. According to Psychology Today, “motivation is literally the desire to act and move toward a goal.” When you’re building a business, that desire is essential — and it can also be infuriatingly evasive.

But success doesn’t always start with extraordinary motivation. Just like a snowball gathering speed, sometimes motivation builds after we begin. I’ve experienced this phenomenon firsthand. For example, I’m not a highly motivated person. I don’t leap out of bed at 6 am, I don’t love swinging kettle bells, and I don’t read 100 books a year.

Yet, I’ve slowly grown my startup, JotForm, into a company with over 4.3 million users and 130 employees. I usually manage to squeeze in a daily workout as well.

My point? Accomplishing our goals simply doesn’t require consistent motivation. We can achieve big things, even when we don’t feel like doing the day-to-day tasks.

End the destructive cycle of procrastination.

Avoidance gradually increases our anxiety, making us even more likely to procrastinate, and then the pattern escalates. To end this vicious cycle, it’s important to identify why we’re dodging a specific activity.

Heidi Grant Halvorson and E. Tory Higgins, co-authors of “Focus: Use Different Ways of Seeing the World to Power Success and Influence,” explain that motivational focus affects how we approach life’s challenges. “Promotion-focused people see their goals as creating a path to gain or advancement and concentrate on the rewards that will accrue when they achieve them,” Grant Halvorson and Higgins write in Harvard Business Review.

“Prevention-focused people, in contrast, see their goals as responsibilities, and they concentrate on staying safe. They worry about what might go wrong if they don’t work hard enough or aren’t careful enough.”

These two types can also affect how we procrastinate. Prevention-focused avoidance is about preventing a loss. For example, you need to hire your first employee, but you’re worried about choosing the wrong person. A mis-hire would drain time and money, so you postpone the process entirely.

Promotion-focused procrastination occurs when we see a task as a way to level up, but we still can’t summon the drive to get started. For example, you might believe that yoga would offset some entrepreneurial stress, but you reach for an espresso every morning instead of the mat.

Clearly, our emotions are tangled up in both promotion and prevention focus. On either side of the equation, the “feeling like it” part becomes a slippery slope. But as Melissa Dahl wrote in a 2016 article for The Cut: “You don’t have to feel like getting something done in order to actually get it done.”

Let that soak in for a moment. When you’d rather visit the dentist than tackle analytics or spreadsheets, cut your feelings out of the equation. Decide in advance exactly where and when you’ll dig in and then forget about emotions. Don’t think about it or weigh the pros and cons. If you planned to start at 3 pm, simply start. Commit to the schedule you created.

Harness the power of momentum.

Every morning, I spend at least an hour writing morning pages. This daily routine creates motivation for my day. I don’t summon the inspiration for this practice; I just do it, and then I start to feel excited about the projects ahead.

Once we take even the tiniest step forward, momentum will soon keep you rolling. That’s because sustained momentum toward a goal creates a compound effect — the principle that consistent, incremental effort can produce dramatic changes over time.

Blog 4 Revision: “Injustice Anywhere is a Threat to Justice Everywhere”: Philosophical Worldviews, Education, Ethics & Sustainability

This week’s focus is on the philosophy behind justice and sustainability, stretching from the types of justice, to the importance of childhood education, to how we can be leaders of sustainability into our adult life. Chapter 25 in the textbook begins the discussion by looking at the various environmental worldviews and how we can become more sustainably literate. While it does a great job as an overview, the articles we read look at these topics in more detail.

Intragenerational Justice

“Intra” refers to a description that is on the inside. So, intragenerational justice refers to actions that are happening in the present to protect people in the present. An example of this is the Environmental Justice Movement: a conglomeration of informal ideologies spurred by environmentally concerned theories and practices with a focus on distributive fairness, investigating the social aspects of who is involved in environmental concerns and in what aspect-- who is causing issues, who is receiving them.

The modern movement came about from the merging of environmental concerns and the civil rights movement-- this link in understanding the suffering of people of color and of the environment has been recognized since the start. The movement acknowledges the disproportionate distribution of harmful effects to African Americans, Latinx Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, the working class, and the poor. The imbalances of environmental justice align so closely with those of all other forms of race.

Various studies have shown that there is a significant difference between how white and minority communities are treated by the EPA, with white communities getting better treatments; though criticisms and counter-studies have shown that it is not a matter of race, but rather income levels-- that industrial workers are hurt the most. Environmental justice is also reflected in language. I think that it is still a matter of race though. That’s where the recognition dimension of justice lies: accepting that there is an exclusionary history that has brought us to where we are today.[1]

Intergenerational Justice

Intergenerational justice refers to “the set of obligations the members of one generation may owe to people of other generations, past or future.”[2] The author of this article, Clark Wolf, discusses the proponents and opponents to the idea of helping future generations. How important are future generations? If they are not important at all, if we are truly only living in our moment, then we can do whatever we want. But we must want to allow others to have their own choices and be able to have happiness in their moments...sure, we can see as far as we can because we stand on the backs of technological giants, but also because we had the balance of the ecosystem for thousands of years by indigenous peoples…

Wolf does a great job explaining the reasonings behind the group of people I have been calling the “nihilists” in past blogs in the section titled “Rights, Identity, and Skepticism About Intergenerational Justice.”[3] This also lines up with the end of the textbook chapter discussion on denial, indifference, and inaction.[4]The points are seemingly justifiable: why should we be putting so much stress on caring for ‘future generations’ when we could be living happily in the present?

With this, I picture a storm of angry school-age protesters marching in, so as to say “look at us, we are the future!” Unless the anarchists over at vhmt.com are globally successful with this next generation, there will be new people on the planet vying for joy.[5] We were brought to life through community, and we must therefore support our communities.

A critique of intergenerational justice is that it is anthropocentric. Interspecific justice comes into balance that.

Interspecific Justice

Interspecific justice occurs between different species. This idea shines through profoundly in Aldo Leopold’s “The Land Ethic,” where he states that “the land ethic enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants, and animals, or collectively: the land... the land ethic changes the role of homo sapiens from conqueror of the land-community to plain member and citizen of it.”[6] This aligns greatly with my writing in the beginning of the semester, where we explained our personal environmental worldview. We must work to eliminate suffering of not only humans but living beings today and in the future. This is possible through healing all the interconnections that built up the web sustaining living beings through the land. To do this, we must stop seeing the living beings and the land as means to an economic end. Leopold says explicitly that “the evidence had to be economic in order to be valid…[but] birds should continue as a matter of biotic right, regardless of the presence or absence of economic advantage to us.” [7] I agree with this, but I also see that humans are a cog in that machine as well—in some sense it is the reason I am in college. And ironically, if I were to follow one potential path and become an environmental consultant, my career would be based upon how many companies I can make eco-friendlier solely for the economic aspect of it. I have told my father, a dentist, that he should stop handing out free plastic toothbrushes after appointments and switch to toothbrushes of compostable material, but I have been unsuccessful as I have not yet found a loophole for a better economics of it. It isn’t that he doesn’t love nature, as he’s the one who taught me to appreciate the outdoors—but he does not feel the urgency to help the environment.

Lifelong Education

Biophilia, or love of nature and other life forms, does not have to be taught—it is an innate quality that humans contain as part of our genetic makeup.[8] Although we have evolved a long ways, we still are animals, and studies have shown that we are more comfortable in settings that mimic the natural world[9][10] Although biophilia is an innate part of us, it is not always recognized.

Children, especially in the last several generations, have been spending less time outdoors and more time indoors with technology. Nature deficient disorder is the theory that less time outdoors causes behavioral issues, rises in obesity, attention disorders, and depression, and is a real problem affecting children today. Richard Louv coined this term in 2005 with his book “Last Child in the Woods.” [11] Part of what makes humans so unique is that as part of our evolution, we began to sustain a longer childhood—humans are childlike for more of their lives than other mammals.[12] Adults have the option to decide whether children spend this childhood indoors or out. This decision will stem from their education. According to some, it is an act of citizenship to the environment to promote a sustainable community for people of all ages.[13] David Orr’s assessment of higher education is in agreement with this idea—all education needs to be environmental education.[14] The interconnectedness of life forms needs desperately to be recognized in education, because as Martin Luther King Jr. says in “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.[15]

I first heard of Mark and his message about primal health back in 2013. At the time, my husband and I were living in a modest cabin in the woods of Northern Maine and the extent of my fitness routine was the obligatory jog now and then or some exercise videos that mostly involved bodyweight training. Our cabin had no electricity or running water which meant that we were gathering, cutting and stacking firewood by hand so that we could stay warm during the long winters. Turning manure, bending over in the garden, hauling hay for our goats and clearing woods for future pasture were serious back killing chores and we knew we needed to find a way to get stronger in order to support our active lifestyle. Coupled with this was my husband’s chronic GI distress and autoimmune condition, Reactive Arthritis, which led us down the road of research into how a grain-free, sugar free diet could improve those ailments.

As is often the case, primal nutrition and heavy lifting principles were deeply entwined from the very beginning of our journey towards optimal health. And as we cut out wheat and sugar, we also began learning the functional movements of the squat, deadlift and pull-up. With a manual treadmill we found in the barn, we regularly blasted ourselves with intervals after reading from you the importance of sprinting. Your fitness principles of walk far, run fast, lift heavy came so naturally to us and in the setting of the lush, Maine woods, it felt that much more primal to get in tune with our ancestral physiques.

You might imagine that the stronger and more fit we became, the more we wanted to eat better to support that. Before long, our backs felt bulletproof chopping and stacking piles of firewood. My husband’s arthritis improved. I was seeing the extra weight I had carried my whole life slip away. We had gone to the woods to seek a lifestyle where we could call the shots and pursue our healthiest existence. But in the process, we had the rude awakening that our bodies were the weakest link in the chain of health. Our minds were strong and our homestead was strong, but our bodies were not. And so when we saw the benefits of the Primal Blueprint massively improve our existence, it was like coming out of a bad dream and I woke up one morning thinking “hey, this is really something to live for.”

While I graduated college with a degree in writing, I never really had found my purpose or a career I was passionate about giving my 9 to 5 energy to. I always believed that I had a lot to share with the world, but couldn’t conceive of what avenue to take, but with this new primal lifestyle, I discovered a completely unexpected passion. Always the chubby book nerd my whole life, taking on sports in school out of social pressure and obligation but never out of true interest, here I was, suddenly wanting to pursue fitness and wellness as a career.

We ended up leaving our little homestead for my husband to travel down the long (and still not complete) road of becoming a Dentist. He studied for biochemistry and tests and I studied strength and conditioning in between my long hours at Starbucks. (Side note: I managed to make it 2 years working there without consuming sugar and my coworkers would always marvel at my dedication of turning down a free Frappuccino. I explained to them that eating primal, my energy was consistent throughout the day and better than ever and seeing the positive effects of my nutrition in my day to day life was all the motivation I needed to persist.) The years we spent studying for our individual pursuits, we also spend wrecking ourselves on the barbell and on the field doing sprints and without following any strict program, we simply tried to remember to walk far, run fast, lift heavy. Slowly and surely, our body composition improved and I took on my first personal training clients.

Now living in Salt Lake City, I think of myself more as a Strength Coach than a personal trainer and before walking that road I didn’t even realize there was a difference. I see my colleagues often get wrapped up in ideal programming principles and I try to remember the basics: pick up heavy stuff and put it overhead using good technique, train for explosive speed and go on long hikes outdoors.

I use my personal experience to help guide my athletes on the emotional journey of becoming strong and realizing their physical potential. I have so many people, primarily women, come to me saying they want to lose weight. But as we begin working together, they quickly see that in fact their goal is much more complex that a number on the scale. They learn that it feels good to get strong and learn how to move in ways they never thought possible. I see the look of fear in their eyes at approaching a back squat for the first time and I recognize that look of fear because it’s the same one I felt when I started my journey. I see timid women who hate their bodies do a pull-up for the first time after working hard for a year and then it’s like poof… now they love their bodies because they unlocked this talent for strength they never knew they had. When that happens, the number on the scale matters so much less to them because now they have a performance goal. Now they are pursuing health rather than weight loss.

Although I am not strictly a Primal Blueprint coach, I still hold onto those principles while I teach other people how to lift and what strategies they can use to build balanced nutrition. I encourage them to seek nutrient-dense foods rather than counting macros or calories and to eat when hunger ensues naturally rather than adhering to six small meals a day. I feel confident coaching strategies like Keto and Intermittent Fasting because I have done the research on the health benefits and have the anecdotal evidence to back it up from my own experience. I am always trying to do what your blog did for me, which is to teach them ways they can figure out what health uniquely means to them. I still try to embody the idea that you instilled in me: study how our ancestors thrived to learn how to seek our healthy existence in a world that can often be toxic.

My transformation doesn’t come through in a before and after photo, but I believe I have gained a million times more than if I had lost 100 lbs and cured 10 autoimmune conditions. I discovered my life’s path and spend every day trying to guide others to do the same.

I Saw the Extra Weight I’d Carried My Whole Life Slip Away

It’s Monday, everyone! And that means another Primal Blueprint Real Life Story from a Mark’s Daily Apple reader. My visual transformation isn’t all that impressive. In fact, despite having a completely different body composition, I weigh more or less the same that I did six years ago.

My real transformation has occurred on the inside and in the way that I try to embody the Primal Blueprint principles in the way I live my life.

I first heard of Mark and his message about primal health back in 2013. At the time, my husband and I were living in a modest cabin in the woods of Northern Maine and the extent of my fitness routine was the obligatory jog now and then or some exercise videos that mostly involved bodyweight training. Our cabin had no electricity or running water which meant that we were gathering, cutting and stacking firewood by hand so that we could stay warm during the long winters. Turning manure, bending over in the garden, hauling hay for our goats and clearing woods for future pasture were serious back killing chores and we knew we needed to find a way to get stronger in order to support our active lifestyle. Coupled with this was my husband’s chronic GI distress and autoimmune condition, Reactive Arthritis, which led us down the road of research into how a grain-free, sugar free diet could improve those ailments.

As is often the case, primal nutrition and heavy lifting principles were deeply entwined from the very beginning of our journey towards optimal health. And as we cut out wheat and sugar, we also began learning the functional movements of the squat, deadlift and pull-up. With a manual treadmill we found in the barn, we regularly blasted ourselves with intervals after reading from you the importance of sprinting. Your fitness principles of walk far, run fast, lift heavy came so naturally to us and in the setting of the lush, Maine woods, it felt that much more primal to get in tune with our ancestral physiques.

You might imagine that the stronger and more fit we became, the more we wanted to eat better to support that. Before long, our backs felt bulletproof chopping and stacking piles of firewood. My husband’s arthritis improved. I was seeing the extra weight I had carried my whole life slip away.
