the only reason I can pretend like I know anything about leather chemistry is going on insane research dives at 3am for exactly two reasons: can you make clothing out of mushroom collagen (yes) and how expensive would leather be in Sunless Skies (not very).

I remember mapping out the insane breakdown of chemistry to go from mushroom collagen to leather collagen a year ago and right now I literally only remember there's a 3+ ion you have to fit into the collagen structure to make it remain flexible, vegetable tanning is the better of the two tanning methods, and good alum came from Egypt.

Babylonia actually had classifications #of good alum and bad alum (corresponding to aluminum in the 3+ site and iron in the 3+ site) because iron will obviously break down #in the structure since it oxidizes and leaches easier. I guess I can start with the geology of Egypt?? I have no fucking idea what #it looks like tbh.
