Hi Luci! What are your thoughts on opinions that Ferrari should be more aggressive with their development? (see: https://x.com/brakeboosted/status/1800189877675241860?t=dB1v-0fWyQZHGRgin0-4-w&s=19)
And I was also curious if Canada was just an outlier for us, if it's easy to recover from and there's nothing to really worry about fundamentally. I wasn't able to watch the race but I heard Charles' pace was good before the engine issue. I also heard Ferrari still can't warm their tyres in cooler conditions? The guy from the tweet speculated that they might not have been able to solve it yet because "the car is not allowing them to explore certain setup changes, or it doesn't really give the desired outcome."
I am going to disagree on a few fronts with Mr Brakeboosted.
First Ferrari need to be methodical about development this year. People don't like waiting, but this is the base going into 2025 and will heavily inform 2026 development. I am okay with the team taking their time.
Also Ferrari have accelerated the upgrade timeline.
I also disagree with his assessment of the warming issue. It's not as severe as it was and I think we have a good chance of seeing it vanish more with upgrades in Silverstone, the areas those are targeting are likely going to take it out on the tyres. And we have seen a step up in performance in that area.
I also will explain that there was a lot more that went into the tyre warming than the issue we saw earlier in the season this race.
I think that this had similarities to China in the sense that both tracks had just been resurfaced and that was really more of the issue rather than the more fundamental warming problem we saw earlier in the season. It may be the SF-24 is not as good on track surfaces like this, and that would explain why we saw Mclaren and Red Bull stronger and even Merc, because we saw that in China as well. I think it was a track condition thing more than anything else Because we have seen that the warming problem has been improved. For example in Monaco there was no problem at all, which means that there are ways to set up the car to get around it. And additionally removing downforce and certain other aero upgrades that will be harder on the tyres will likely change this as well.
It is my feeling that this was a one off. I don't think this race exposed anything deeply fundamental to worry about. The mixed conditions and a lot of other factors were at play with regards to the tyre issue. And Ferrari are about to become a lot more aggressive I think with the upgrade path. We have only done one set of upgrades and I do think the upgrade path has been pushed forward. And I think we will continue to see that throughout the season. It's way too early to claim they aren't being aggressive. They were certainly conservative in their approach to be the last to bring upgrades, but I think that was for the best considering we got the best understanding of the base we could.
We need to remember this is a car development season, we are doing well and ranking high in both championships but there is a lot of work to be done and a lot to be learned. Rushing will likely lead to bigger missteps than waiting. And this is a season where the stakes are crucially about the next two years as well as this year.
I expect that Ferrari will be bringing rear and front wing upgrades to help improve straight line speed to Silverstone(if I had to guess) as well as other components.
But yes, Canada was an outlier pretty much on all fronts as far as I can tell.

Understanding South Africans: 🤣😂🤣😂
Understanding the unique South African Lingo
BRAAI: What is a braai? It is the first thing you will be invited to when you visit South Africa . A braai is a backyard barbecue and it will take place whatever the weather. So you will have to go even if it's raining like mad. At a braai you will be introduced to a substance known as mieliepap.
AG: This one of the most useful South African words. Pronounced like the"ach" in the German "achtung", it can be used to start a reply when you are asked a tricky question, as in: "Ag, I don't know." Or a sense of resignation:"Ag OK, I'll have some more mieliepap then." It can stand alone too as a signal of irritation.
DONNER: A rude word, it comes from the Afrikaans "donder" (thunder).Pronounced "dorner", it means "beat up." A team member in your rugby team can get donnered in a game, or your wife can donner you if you come back from a braai at three in the morning.
EINA: Widely used by all language groups, this word, derived from the Afrikaans, means "ouch." Pronounced "aynah".You can say it in sympathy when you see your friend the day after he got donnered by his wife.
HEY: Often used at the end of a sentence to emphasize the importance of what has just been said, as in "You're only going to get donnered if you come in late again, hey?" It can also stand alone as a question.Instead of saying "excuse me?" or "pardon me?" when you have not heard something directed at you, you can always say: "Hey?"
IZIT?: This is another great word to use in conversations. Derived from the two words "is" and "it", it can be used when you have nothing to contribute if someone tells you something at a braai. For instance, if someone would say: "The Russians will succeed in their bid for capitalism once they adopt a work ethic and respect for private ownership." It is quite appropriate to respond by saying:"Izit?"
JA WELL NO FINE: This is another conversation fallback. Derived from the four words:"yes", "well", "no" and fine",it roughly means "OK". If your bank manager tells you your account is overdrawn, you can, with confidence, say: "Jawelnofine."
KLAP: Pronounced "klup" - an Afrikaans word meaning smack, whack or spank. If you spend too much time in front of the TV during exam time, you could end up getting a "klap" from your mother. In America, that is called child abuse. In South Africa , it is called promoting education. But to get "lekker geklap" is to get motherlessly drunk.
LEKKER: An Afrikaans word meaning nice, this word is used by all language groups to express approval. If you enjoyed a braai thoroughly, you can say: "Now that was lekk-errrrrrr!" while drawing out the last syllable.
TACKIES: These are sneakers or running shoes. The word is also used to describe automobile or truck tyres. "Fat tackies" are really wide tyres, as in:"You've got lekker fat tackies on your Vôlla, hey?"
DOP: This word has two basic meanings, one good and one bad. First the good: A dop is a drink, a cocktail, a sundowner, a noggin. When invited for a dop, be careful! It could be one sedate drink or ablast, depending on the company. Now the bad: To dop is to fail.If you "dopped" standard two (Grade 4) more than once, you probably won't be reading this.
SAAMIE: This is a sandwich. For generations, school- children have traded"saamies" during lunch breaks. In South Africa you don't send your kid to school with liver-polony saamies. They are impossible to trade!!
BAKKIE: This word is pronounced "bucky" and can refer to a small truck or pick-up. If a young man takes his "girl" (date) in a bakkie it could be considered as a not so "lekker" form of transport because the seats can't recline.
HOWZIT: This is a universal South African greeting, and you will hear this word throughout the country. It is often accompanied with the word"Yes!" as in: "Yes, howzit?". In which case you answer "No, fine."
NOW NOW: In much of the outside world, this is a comforting phrase:"Now now,it's really not so bad." But in South Africa , this phrase is used in the following manner: "Just wait, I'll be there now now." It means "a little after now".
TUNED GRIEF: To be tuned grief is to be aggravated, harassed. For example, if you argue with somebody about a rugby game at a braai and the person had too much dop (is a little "geklap"), he might easily get aggravated and say.: "You're tuning me grief, hey!". To continue the argument after this could be unwise and result in major tuning of grief..
BOET: This is an Afrikaans word meaning "brother" which is shared by all language groups. Pronounced "boot" but shorter, as in"foot", it can be applied to a brother or any person of the male sex. For instance a father can call his son "boet" and friends can apply the term to each other too. Sometimes the diminutive "boetie" is used. But don't use it on someone you hardly know - it will be thought patronizing and could lead to you getting a "lekker klap".
PASOP: From the Afrikaans phrase meaning "Watch Out!", this warning is used and heeded by all language groups. As in: "The boss hasn't had his coffee yet - so you better pasop boet" Sometimes just the word"pasop!" is enough without further explanation.Everyone knows it sets out a line in the sand not to be crossed.
SKOP, SKIET EN DONNER: Literally "kick, shoot and thunder", this phrase is used by many South African speakers to describe action movies. A Clint Eastwood movie is always a good choice if you're in the mood for of a lekker skop, skieten donner flick.
VROT: Pronounced - "frot". A expressive word which means"rotten" or"putrid" in Afrikaans, it is used by all language groups to describe anything they really dislike. Most commonly intended to describe fruit or vegetables whose shelf lives have long expired, but a pair of old tackies (sneakers) worn a few years too long can be termed "vrot" by some unfortunate folk which find themselves in the same vicinity as the wearer. Also a rugby player who misses important kicks or tackles can be said to have played a vrot game - opposite to a"lekker" game(but not to his face). A movie was once reviewed with this headline:"Slick Flick, Vrot Plot."
ROCK UP: To rock up is to just, sort of arrive (called "gatecrash" in other parts of the world). You don't make an appointment or tell anyone you are coming - you just rock up. Friends can do that but you have to be selective about it. For example, you can't just rock up for a job interview.
SCALE: To scale something is to steal it. A person who is"scaly" has a doubtful character, is possibly a scumbag, and should rather be left off the invitation list to your next braai.
JA-NEE: "Yes No" in English. Politics in South Africa has always been associated with family arguments and in some cases even with physical fights. It is believed that this expression originated with a family member who didn't want to get a klap or get donnerred, so he just every now and then muttered "ja-nee". Use it when you are required to respond, but would rather not choose to agree or disagree.

Surviving a Road Trip with the Children
The summer holidays are most certainly coming. Together with your partner as your only support you are planning one of the most difficult missions. Deploying a successful road trip taking the kids somewhere – without arguments, annoyance or simply stopping the car and throttling your little cherubs.
It doesn’t take Super-Nanny to work out that children generally become unhappy because of three reasons. They are either tired, hungry or bored – or any combination of the three. Can you manage to navigate the road trip, arriving at your destination on time, whilst keeping these three vital factors in check?
To help you on this near impossible mission we haven’t got Tom Cruise. Instead we have put together our secret agent styled parenting road trips, so you can handle the little whingers like a high grade ninja.
Every Good Boy Scout Knows…
You can’t be those god-awful parents who preach a gospel of preparation to your kids, put them into the cubs or brownies and then fail to come up with the right stuff when it matters most.
Keeping little minds occupied for car trips is all about preparation. It’s not only you and your sanity you need to consider here, as your precious ones need looking after and you can’t simply get by on hobbling in the rain to the nearest pub if you break down or run out of petrol.
Make sure that you have covered the following points before you even sit down in your car and close the doors:
Emergency gear – the standard stuff that should be in the car. High visibility jackets, waters, a flash-light, chocolate, spare phone. Everything you need to get you out a tight situation.
Service and support – has the car had a full service recently? Have you made sure all the tyres are fully pumped and that all the oil and other fluids are properly topped up? And of course is the contract with the RAC or AA still up to date?
Weather Check – you may want to stay at home if there’s going to be torrential rain on the roads, or take extra water if you’ve chosen to sit in the car on the hottest day of the year.
Everyone Rests – get a good night’s sleep before the big journey. This goes for both you and the children as being well rested will reduce in journey stress. Unless of course you are planning on driving through the night in which case it’s important that you have managed your sleep cycle successfully.
Child Friendly – if you do want to stop off at restaurants or eateries along the way, make sure they have the facilities to deal with younger children or if the option is there, go for stops with play parks or child activity areas.
Don’t Leave Home Without It – Your “stop what you’re doing or else face” – that you have practiced sufficiently in the mirror.
Proper Planning Prevents…
Every mission needs a good plan. It’s often in the organisational room that success or failure is first established. Get things right on paper and it’s generally a breeze. So what are our top tips for this vital stage in your operation?
The Best Time – choose a time when the roads are likely to be empty, especially if you have to navigate tricky urban estates or inner city avenues.
Plan for Stops – find some good places to stop and stretch along the way. Factor in extra time for exploration and remember that children will generally want to go to the toilet about 20 minutes after you stop for lunch.
Pick Somewhere Interesting – if you can combine car journeys with education, why not? Stop at a castle or an area of beauty on the way and sneak a little learning into those young minds.
Don’t Leave Home Without It – we could say a SatNav, but that’s all a bit too obvious. But what about when it doesn’t work? This is when an old school map is a real godsend.
Packing
Keep the essentials well within reach. Try to think of everything you’ll need in the car from books through to bottled water and make sure they are properly stashed for full deployment at the key stages of your long distance mission.
Having the right kit to hand in seconds can avert any emergencies, no matter how hopeless the situation may seem. It’s also good to keep outside gear like jackets in the front of the car in case the weather changes.
Don’t Leave Home Without It – wet wipes will hide a multitude of sins, but remember to have a bag for used wipes and other bits of rubbish. Keeping all the waste in one area will make for a simpler and less frustrating journey.
Food for Thought
Save food, snacks and sweets for emergencies, or ration out bite-sized pieces of chocolate or individual treats for convenience when the sugar levels are getting low. You hear a few horror stories of children choking on bigger snacks in the back of the car, so try to keep the bigger foodstuffs for stops.
Don’t Leave Home Without It – yes, giving your children a drink, especially in the heat, will keep the car cool in more ways than one. The smart money however goes on non-spill cups that will protect your upholstery from all kinds of spills.
A Comforting Touch
One of the key factors in managing behaviour is making sure your children are comfortable. Have all their favourite things around them from the magical blanket to favourite teddy bears and dolls to give them that relaxed feeling of the familiar.
Tissues and towels can help deal with spillages and keep a paper bag at hand for travel sickness as the wide opening will work better at catching fluids when compared to the classic carrier bag. Blankets are great for night journeys and a change of clothes, especially for little children will aid a quick recovery from any kind of accident.
Don’t Leave Home Without It – pillows are great for when the kids can’t get to sleep because of the uncomfortable car seat set up. Simply give them a pillow for reclining purposes and its problem solved.
Entertainment
These days there are so many materials and mediums you can use to keep your children occupied and amused, we thought we’d give you a number of key areas:
Back to the Old School
These are the classics. The things that rocked your world as a kid on a car journey will probably still work now. Consider the following:
Books – from individual picture books and stories through to a longer story book that you can read out for all the kids. Individual reading can also aid sleep.
Notebooks and pencils – let the children doodle and draw, but beware the permanent pens and go for coloured crayons or pencils instead.
Word searches – and other types of puzzle books are good when the energy levels drop, giving each child the chance to go at their own speed and disappear into thought.
Group Games – you must know these. Staples like I-Spy, count the red cars, license plate bingo, 20 questions and pirates can keep spirits high with everyone talking.
Music – leave the esoteric 1990s mixtape of Jump Up Drum N Bass where it belongs and find some fun, child friendly tunes giving everyone a chance for a sing-a-long.
Radio 4 – is often surprisingly soothing for little red faces and can often calm down everyone in the vehicle. Including mum and dad.
Don’t Leave Home Without It: a school homework book. Not to actually make them do homework, but to use as a threat to make the other activities more compelling.
Futuristic Fun
Whilst Steve Jobs might not have liked to let his children use tablets, he probably had au pairs to entertain those little faces on long car journeys. For the rest of us the following items could well be a godsend:
Audio Books – saving you the trouble of having to tell a story – and you might even find something that’s truly fun for all the family.
Computer Games – whether you’re using the smartphone or the tablet, games and fun apps can keep everyone interested and alert during the journey.
DVDs – dust down that collection of old DVDs in the attic and get out the laptop and the children can have their own cinematic show in the back of the car.
Headphones – allow each child to immerse themselves in their own realm of entertainment with headphones. You might have to shout a little when you want their attention.
Don’t Leave Home Without It: chargers. If you are going to rely on gizmos and gadgets for entertainment and the power runs out, your screenagers may well turn back into screamagers.
In Case of Emergency
No one wants the worst to happen when you’re out on the road, but that doesn’t mean that all accidents and prangs are avoidable. If something untoward should happen your first move should be to give the kids a cuddle and hold them. This will cure most things, but the following tips could help:
Ride It Out – let the crying stop and the children will right themselves, as long as they are not choking on a door handle that they have just detached and attempted to swallow
Stop at the Side of the Road – and everyone can calm down and take the time for a toilet break. Be prepared with toilet paper so that every type of eventuality can be accounted for.
Make a Game Out of It – should something bad happen and your children are very little then making a game out of things can stop them from becoming scared or traumatic.
Don’t Leave Home Without It: a special treat in case everything goes wrong to take young minds off the difficulties – whether it be a traffic jam or a mechanical blow out.
And Finally
Of course the most important thing is for you to go with the flow. Remember the journey will be over soon and you don’t have to shout and get angry and be right all the time in such a confined space. Knowing what to let go and when to put your foot down is the key.
And finally let the world do the work sometimes. There’s loads of brilliant and beautiful sights out there and your kids should be reminded of particular spots of interest and historical importance.

I just think its odd that we are required by law to pay for nothing, after we already have paid for the car. And then if you don't, you are penalized and punished, so you are given no choice. ""Insurance Claim estimate lower than expected, what do I do?""
An elderly lady backed up into my car a few days ago and we decided it'd be best to file an insurance claim. After the claim was ruled in my favor I was sent to a body shop for an estimate of the repair. The damage was to the rear quarter panel of my car which consisted of a scrape across the panel and a quarter sized dent in the panel. The insurance adjuster gave me an estimate and check for 855$. My question is in regards to the repairs, I feel that since this is 100% the other party's fault and since I am the person who has to drive the car that I am entitled to the maximum premium in repairs. I have been reading on Paintless Dent Removal (PDR) and most will say that its the cheap way of making a repair. Does anyone know if it would be possible to go back and get a new estimate/settlement for a new rear quarter panel? Basically my logic is this, if you damage any of my property it should be 100% my call if I want to settle for a compromise or not.""

Furries Can’t Count
Does anyone know the difference between a cosplayer and a furry? It’s a subtle difference, but quite important if you ever bump into either of them. Cosplayers are people who choose to display their love of a program, book, video game etcetera, by dressing up as one of the characters and going to conventions to discuss their passion. Some people buy costumes, but some put a huge amount of effort into creating bespoke pieces – there are some fantastic replica weapons you can find online. Furries, on the other hand, like to dress up as anthropomorphic animals and do… animal things. They are also linked very strongly to the darker and dirtier parts of the internet. I suppose that’s why Channel Four chose to present its latest Crystal Maze team as ‘The Cosplay Team’, despite them being quite obviously furries. Yes, we’re on The Crystal Maze, ready to deliver a scathing indictment that’s long overdue. I thought I’d start with tonight’s furries because they were the worst team so far. For a while, I genuinely thought they’d be going into the dome with only one crystal, but I’ll leave the digital assassination for later and just attack the show for now. Richard Ayoade is not a bad Maze Master, he’s quirky enough and informative, if sometimes a little too much so, but the library of different games is somewhat… limited. There aren’t that many at all. At this point, I’m fairly certain we’ve seen every game twice, and some more than that. The games aren’t that great either. I mean, the one with the spinning planets in the futuristic zone is almost identical to the one with the spinning hazard signs in the industrial zone. But I could put that aside. What makes me angry, what seems so blatantly insulting, what makes me really want to stick an electric whisk down someone’s throat and spin it until their entrails resemble tomato puree, are the ‘riddles’. Channel Four obviously doesn’t know what a riddle is. A riddle is clever, it is supposed to include words and be a little opaque, so one has to think in a certain way to understand. A riddle is not a primary school maths equation. Asking someone to divide twenty by four is not asking them a riddle. I’m half expecting the next riddle to be “If I have two brain-dead furries and I add another three, how many furries do I have?” The answer, by the way, is seven, I’m fairly sure the two brothers were pregnant. Honestly, there’s something wrong with your game show if it’s asking questions which would patronise a six year old, but I’m feeling generous, so I’ll give them some hints. Look up Raven, an old children’s television program involving a Scottish bloke prancing around in a forest saying “A brave effort!” every twenty seconds. Any one episode of Raven is almost guaranteed to have a riddle in it, and by that I mean a riddle written by someone who actually understands what a riddle is. Right, furry time. NO. I dread to think what that mean to any furries reading this. Ignore me, don’t uh… do anything on my account. Please. Anyway, the furries were without doubt the least successful team so far, and that’s including the celebrity editions, one of which included Scarlet Moffat, so they should be ASHAMED. I have to admit, when the furries completed their first task, the industrial zone button one, I thought they’d do quite well. No one has managed that one yet. But everything went downhill from there. The highlight was when one of the identical twin furries (biologically, not furrililliliy) had to crawl about in an enclosed space when he clearly didn’t like small spaces. Not to mention, he possessed a rather fine spare tractor tyre. He got locked in, but the team leader, an obnoxious prick with a beard, bought him out immediately, sacrificing one of two precious crystals for his release. They then went on to make the best piece of television of the week in the futuristic zone. The other twin furry, also of not inconsiderable size, had to do a task where the participant must climb across five brightly coloured planets suspended from the ceiling and back again. This chap only made it to the second planet, then came back again. Oh, but the fun was just starting. He got stuck making the final step from spinning planet to entry platform, he just kept spinning and nearly falling off and breathing really really heavily. You could see his mind beginning to snap, right there on the television. It was brilliant. Eventually, the time ran out while he kept spinning around like Tarzan of the overweight middle-aged furries. Upon the call of time, he fell off, sprawling like a starfish on the floor. He clambered onto the steps and just sat there panting, very possibly entering a permanent vegetative state. So he was bought out. And they failed lots more tasks and entered the crystal dome with two crystals, granting a total of ten seconds in which to catch over fifty gold tokens. In a twist of plot worthy of whoever wrote Saw, they didn’t manage it. They didn’t miss much though. I’ve seen people win before, and Ayoade isn’t joking when he says ‘middling prize’. I’m fairly certain one of them was a free trip to Legoland.

  EDITOR’S NOTE
Welcome to the first issue of FANGZINE, a collection of short stories, silly articles and general tripe, with some serious social commentary thrown in from time to time as well.
2016, by all accounts, was not a good year. Countless celebrity icons kicked the bucket, an unelected uber-bitch seized power in Westminster, the high watermark point of the post-war neoliberal consensus was realised with Brexit, and the bloke from The Chase was the highest selling recording artist in Britain. Oh yeah… Donald Trump happened, too.
So, with all these horrors behind us, can we take comfort in the fact that this is a new year, a fresh start for the world and for ourselves? Well, no. There’s nothing remarkable about it being 2017, it’s just an arbitrary rotation of the world around the sun. Bad shit’s still going to happen, isn’t it? Come on now, really- don’t kid yourself.
With that in mind, see this zine in a way as a distraction from the terrible events that this year will no doubt spew forth. This is a celebration of the creative, comedic and trivial side of life, so please, read on at your leisure and enjoy!

        CAPS-LOCK ON: A NEW HAT
The first of a dark trilogy, heartbreakingly based on true events and personal experience, by Stephen Spiers
Weeks and weeks ago, in a galaxy far, far up north, a troubled young soul was drinking his way through Leeds on a warm summer’s evening. Little did he know that he was about to be consumed by a vicious addiction from which few, if any, have been known to emerge from. Read on and take heed, for the events in the following tale could happen to anyone…
 “Whose cap is this?”
“Dunno mate, someone must’ve left it.”
‘Jackpot’ I thought to myself as I stumbled from inside one of the many nameless pubs on the Otley Run’s agenda into the balmy late summer Leeds air.
“Ere, they’re all over here, you can ask.”- Jack was gesturing towards a low wall where the rest of our troupe were sitting, having a smoke.
A hat is a wonderful thing on a night out. I’d never really liked wearing hats, even at a young age, but after 5 pints and a couple of ‘fat trebbies’, such an accessory can provide one with endless fun. Drunken girls’ attentions can be caught, hilarious Jay-Z impressions can be made, and if nothing else, a little warmth can be provided at 4 in the morning when you’re sobered up and shivering, waiting for that taxi that should have arrived 20 fucking minutes ago. These were the kind of thoughts that were running through my mind as I shouted back over my shoulder:
“Fuck ‘em, I wanna wear it”
With that, I placed the plain black hat on my head and strode purposefully towards the next pub. It’d just be a laugh for one night, I thought. If only I knew of the descent into a world of addiction and self-loathing upon which I had just embarked.
The very next morning I was frantically scrambling around my room, packing my bags for a trip to Budapest with some friends, and generally regretting my decision to go out the night before. With my head pounding, and all of about 3 hours of alcohol-induced sleep under my belt, my newly acquired piece of headgear was the furthest thing from my mind. However, after several minutes of rooting through various items of my wardrobe looking for this and that, I found myself face to face (brim) with their newest addition: the little black baseball cap. There it sat, peering up at me from underneath a pile of unwashed clothing. ‘Go on, pack it’- I heard an unfamiliar voice in my head- ‘You’re going on Holiday, everyone wears hats on holiday’. Why was I persuading myself to take this hat? I didn’t even like wearing caps, and never had, plus I looked like a twat in it anyway. My head was round enough already without removing my poorly-styled quiff from the equation. ‘You’ll probably not even wear it’. I don’t know where it came from, but an unfathomable urge to pack it suddenly came over me. I grabbed it, shoved it in my bag and set off to the railway station.
12 hours, 3 trips to Ryanair’s customer service desk and a flat tyre later, we were dropping our bags off in our tiny Budapest apartment and getting ready to hit the bevs to kick off the holiday. Just as I was slipping on my trusty denim jacket, I heard the voice again- ‘Wear the hat. Go on, just once, just to see what it’s like’. I span round and sure enough there it was, barely visible, lurking in the murky depths of my holdall. And then it was gone. I stood for a moment, confused. Had I actually packed it? Or had I just imagined the whole thing? Then I re-focused. There were more important matters at hand. I could solve this mystery later, during time that couldn’t be better spent drinking copious amounts of beer. Invigorated by the promise of alcohol, I marched from the kitchen into the hallway where the others were waiting, wallet in hand.
No sooner had I stepped into the hall however, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror on the wall and my heart sank. I turned and stared in dismay at myself staring right back at me with an equally horrified expression. There was no wild imagination at work here, and no magical disappearing hat either. I was wearing it. And not only was I wearing it, I was wearing it backwards. I looked like a cross between one of those chavs I’d seen walking around Bradford in their matching tracksuit tops and bottoms, gobbing on the pavement as they went; and one of those hipster roadmen you can find populating the streets of Leeds, trying their best to look cool by wearing decidedly uncool clothing. I had become everything that I hate in this world. But that was just the thing. I didn’t hate it. I fucking loved it.

      HOLLY PIECE
After having volunteered at the Ipswich Night Shelter during the winter of 2015, and spending a night sleeping rough on the streets of Norwich in 2016 to raise money for the St. Martin’s Housing Trust, Holly Free offers an insight into the plight of the homeless in Britain today, and voices her concern over the apparent lack of empathy the general public shows towards them.
As I walk through the streets of Norwich at 1am, I glance to those not at immediate eye level. There seems to be some form of confrontation between a homeless individual and a Tesco security guard. I walk over, and the man appears to be on Spice, known as the most popular legal high that became illegal in May 2016. The security guard is visibly angry, and I am immediately shocked by his threatening stance towards the man who is barely able to stand, talk or function like a human being. The individual is not being aggressive, however the guard is using unnecessarily strong language towards him. The guard, in a dire need to justify his actions, turns to me – “He’s like this every fucking week. I’m sick of it.” Unable to bite my tongue, I respond hastily with “well, that quite clearly shows he needs help, don’t you think?” I want to educate this man and make him question what he knows about this individual’s life, and how he has ended up in this situation…  But I receive a response in the form of a patronising laugh and a filthy look, and my own rage silences me.
Everyone around me is mute, and all I can hear is my thoughts rage. An anxious episode? Silently raging at the stigma and ignorance surrounded by poverty and drug addiction? The sudden realisation of throwing away money on alcohol that I will most likely vomit later? All I do know is that the shame I feel is becoming unbearable, and I tuck my money into the pocket of the man who is now physically inept on the floor with three other homeless individuals. For the rest of the night, I feel consumed by worry for the man and his friends, unable to refocus my thoughts on having a night out. “Poor privileged me” I say to myself.
After volunteering at the Ipswich Night Shelter in winter 2015, I witnessed the harsh reality of homelessness, and I cannot sugar-coat it for the sake of those it may upset whom have a roof over their head, food in the cupboard and a general sense of stability. With the high probability of an individual without a home having mentally ill health, distressing family circumstances, or are trying to cope with a bereavement and addiction, it is so much more than just being a nameless face on the ground. It is not knowing when your next meal will be, or if you will ever have a home again. It is the fear of being judged, of ‘faking it’ or being labelled as that ‘helpless heroin addict’ and nothing more. It is being a statistic, not a human being. It is selling The Big Issue and being told to ‘get a real job’ by passers-by. Sometimes, it is going to sleep praying you will not wake up and being disappointed when you do. It is watching some of your friends die. It is crippling stomach cramps after weeks without a substantial meal, it is fatigue, and in worst cases, it is death.
I watch people crowding around sale areas of shops like vultures to roadkill, and most likely due to my own illnesses, my tunnel vision only enables me to see the negative. Money being spent on luxuries that we don’t really need, or actually want. I’m no angel myself – when pay day comes I act like the richest person alive, and then I realise the shit I have bought wasn’t needed at all. I’m not trying to deny people of their fun or own personal enjoyment, but there are times when all I want is for society as a whole to take a step back and look at the somewhat useless things we invest in.
When observing people making snide remarks whilst walking past someone who is quite clearly wasting away, mentally and physically, I wonder if deep down, it bothers them as much as it bothers me. Entering a dissociative state, I question whether anyone out there wants to genuinely help, or if it really is every man for themselves. “You have to cut yourself off from it” “You’ve done all you can” “Focus on yourself” “You’re too kind” Am I? Or is it not basic humanity to care for those in need and help where help is necessary? Maybe my immaturity and mental illnesses warp my idea of compassion… But I don’t want to walk on by, and I certainly don’t want to “draw the line somewhere”. The word compassion, to me, seems to have lost its true meaning, since now it is used to describe random once in a while acts of kindness. Don’t get me wrong, a little kindness is better than none at all, but surely in this increasingly poverty stricken society what we need is a continuity of care if this epidemic is ever to get better.
This doesn’t mean giving your money away to every homeless person you see. It doesn’t mean buying food for every homeless person you see. It can be as simple as a five minute chat, human contact being one of the biggest luxuries for someone without a home or a family to talk to. You never really consider what that contact can do for someone who has been alienated from the rest of society. You might just be saving a life.
