With the horrifying tweet that Brian made last Saturday, there's a lot of people (including you, probably) worried about who will die in the finale, the harsh battle between whether we say "bye" to a bright light, or "so long" to our sour cream schemer. My answer? Neither!! Object show community, inanimate fandom... whatever we call ourselves! I'm about to present to you why our beloved (and somewhat recently hated) host is going to be the death of the season.

First of all, the trailer (and @inanimateinsanityfan 's recent tumblr post "invitation") has somewhat implied that the focus of the movie, the A-Plot at least, will be around Cobs attempting to get to MePhone4 somehow, whether it be luring him up to Meeple Headquarters or trying to get down to him. We've seen from previous episodes that Cobs wants him dead, but it's hard to tell if he's changed his motive, since we haven't seen him since Episode 13 "Mine Your Own Business". However, he has been consistently sending his newer MePhones to eliminate MePhone4, as 5C clearly states in Episode 6. The newer models have features like tracking (much like MePad) and knife hands (NOT like MePad), which MePhone4 doesn't have, which should in theory have made him easier to kill.

Speaking of the abilities, the MeLife function is only ever used by MePhone4, or at least we only ever get to see him do it. Why? Well, I have an idea but that's a theory for another time. The point is; MePhone4 seems to be the only Meeple product with the ability to bring people to life, and has all of the contestants on there as far as we know. This means that, unless there's a creative solution to perma-kill one of the contestants, MePhone4 needs to die first for any perma-death to occur in the first place.

And hell, removing the regeneration ability as a whole would be a great way to cap off the season, to establish that there's no more retrying and that everything is now set in stone. And even if we do get that damn FOURTH season (bonus points to whoever gets the reference), it'll at least spice things up with having, say, MePad as a host instead, leaving the spot open for someone else to claim and have an interesting story arc of their own.

This shot already pulls up a parallel between MePhone4 and MePhone3GS, and though 3GS isn't really confirmed dead, they're definitely not gonna be alive any time soon. The parallels could imply that MePhone4 is destined to a fate similar to 3GS; no longer in service, probably broken, and maybe even killed of by Cobs himself.

In addition to this, all of the other MePhones we've seen have all died; MePhone4 technically died with 4S and 5 in the Season 1 finale "Journey Through Memory Lane", 5S and 5C were introduced and immediately killed in Season 2 Episode 6 "Let 'Er RIP", and MePhones 6 and 6+ were also immediately killed upon introduction in Season 2 Episode 8 "Theft and Battery". The MePhones all have something in common, and that is unavoidable and quick death, much like real iphones honestly.

Does this mean that MePhone4 will have to die as a result of MePhone's faulty creation? No, but there is a pre-established pattern with each of the MePhones that goes as a cycle, perpetuating Cobs' cruel style of doing things; he creates something, claims it's his favorite for a year, then makes something a little better and throws the pre-established bond away to die, and rinse and repeat.

But hey! That's just a theory!

Back On Track [Initiative - Harris] Outcome Reporting Review

Unless specified otherwise, all data is being pulled from Harris' report

Back On Track [BOT] is the result of an earlier initiative Harris outlined and implemented [DR3 aka Division of Recidivism, Reduction, and Re-Entry] and was outlined and implemented in partnership with LASD and LAP [LA county sheriff's department and LA Probation department respectively] which will mean police, social workers, legal aid support staff, detainee advocates, etc, as well as Harris' on office as the Attorney General and RD3's staff (legal staff, state-social welfare workers and community liaisons primarily).

The bulk of this review will go under a cut for space, and I will include my final determinations below:

BOT outlines and presumes the following model as a path of "re-entry" [we are going to define this operationally here as "restoration/implementation of sustainable access to state-legitimized resource supply and distribution systems]. Functional re-entry in this context is considered a pre-requisite for "reducing recidivism rates" which we will define as "reducing the frequency of state-authority enforcment by reducing reliance on state-delegitimized resource supply/distribution systems."

The seventh and final row is a single block reading "Program Evaluation"

This review will make no moral comment on the assumptions within these operational definitions, and will have a functional conversation about the mechanisms they utilize/interact with. Additionally I will outline the access constrictions that have been addressed or tolerated by the program design.

Notably, the stakeholders listed by the report as involved in development of a re-entry path does NOT include detainees or even, more specifically, potential candidates for the program [or at least is not reported to do so explicitly]. The program was not offered to those identified as low risk for recidivism, focusing on moderate to high risk candidates. Functionally, this means seeking to understand what about a *person* is most likely to increase risk of recidivism, as low risk candidates are being seen as "uncontrolled factors" beyond the scope of the program. Accepted access constriction therefore includes "existing access to legitimate need meeting systems that is made tenuous by crisis." Additionally, the program focuses on areas that participants themselves have some level of influence in, decentering areas where outside forces may be putting the participant at risk for further exposure to state authority enforcement beyond their control. This will inherently make the program less effective for participants who are a part of communities already at risk of over-policing such as racial and ethnic minorities, low-income individuals, people who rely on self-managed substance use/consumption like "drugs"/DIY HRT/other self-managed medical needs, those with disabling mental/physical health support needs, and parolees. This effectiveness gap is not necessarily an indicator that the program lacks rigorous value, but does alert us to the likelihood that it would need to operate in conjuction with a program(s) aimed at reducing such gaps.

Another important note is that the program is being somewhat misrepresented in the earlier comment. BOT did NOT in fact "sentence people to schooling/training/education" INSTEAD of jail, or offer it as an alternative to detaintion in any way. The program would be more accurately described as transitional services prior to and following RELEASE from detaintion. This is not necessarily an indicator that the program lacks rigorous value, but it is notable that advocates for detaintion abolition have been able to demonstrate similar programs both with AND without detention while BOT explicitly does not offer a detention-free path to these services, or strengthen access to the programs that DO offer detention-free paths to these services on its own.

Additional critical notes are that the needs and risk assessments listed in the program outline are by and large standardized for use is legal settings, NOT public health settings [see particularly TCU-CTS, COMPAS, and TCU-CEST]. Additionally, many of the measures were all created by Texas Christian University's Institute of Behavioral Research who has since been forced to recall and re-evaluate SEVERAL of its scales, including ones used in BOT due to national backlash from the mental health "patient" advocacy and clinical practice spheres. Quite literally, these scales have been wholly discredited as having any legitimacy in public health and social welfare work.

We can perhaps assume that Harris may not have known this at the time, however criticisms of the TCU-CTS extend at least as far back as 2002, 14 years prior to program implementation. It would be unwise to presume there is *no reason* behind the choice to rely almost exclusively on correctional-setting exclusive data measures in a transitional setting program, many of which were already controversial within the social welfare research sphere, and several of which are by now entirely discredited and rejected.

I can find no documentation at time of writing suggesting that the use of these measures/scales in BOT was re-evaluated following their peer-reviewed discrediting, despite BOT's continued claim to adhere to evidence based standards. If someone is aware of documentation to this effect, I would love to see a copy for review and clarification.

Finally, I want to highlight two of the "further development" areas highlighted within the exploratory program itself, as I believe the report itself and I are in agreement about these two areas as core vulnerabilities, but I also want people to observe the difference in how I have made these observations and how I am conveying the narrative vs how the report is choosing to present the same points. I believe that, from conception, BOT is operating from a now-discredited correctional/detention based recidivism model rather than a preventative model which is more likely to serve ALL parties and candidates, including both those who were served effectively by BOT and those who weren't.

This does not suggest the program modal lacks rigorous value, however it is critical that any program which has had its fundamentals discredited in this profound and widespread a manner be re-evaluated under appropriate inter-/intra-communal peer review and be adjusted in accordance with any resultant recommendations. At time of writing, I can find no documentation of this process being initiated, in process, or completed. If someone has access to documentation of this process, I would love to see a copy for further review and clarification.

Dip Pens

So I wanted to know what sort of writing tools Steve and Bucky would have been familiar with, and was really surprised to discover that they would have almost certainly learnt penmanship primarily with dip pens!

Dip pens are a writing technology that came after quills and before fountain pens. They are a reasonably straight-forward tool, but they changed access to literacy in America.

Elements and Accessories of Dip Pens

At the basic level, a dip pen consists of three main elements:

The Pen — While most of us will know of the writing point as a “nib,” it is actually called the “pen.” These metal point, commonly made from steel, are easily slid into the shaft, making them easy to change and replace at will. 

The Shaft — The shaft is the handle the user holds when writing, and can be made of a vast array of materials (ebony, mother of pearl, silver, gold, etc), but usually wood (or later plastic). 

The Ink — Alongside these is ink, usually in an open-top bottle or another temporary container.

Other accessories that would often accompany dip pens:

Blotter Paper — This is paper used to absorb excess ink to prevent smudges. Commonly it would be attached to a holder so it could be rolled over the paper smoothly.

Inkwell and Inkstand — Inkwells are containers that hold ink for use when writing. They can vary in quality and expense as needed. A step up from this is the inkstand, a luxurious desk accessory that would consist of inkwells, containers for spare pen tips, spaces for shafts to rest, and a place for ink blotters.

Writing Pad — This is a leather writing pad that would allow for the smoother glide of the pen tip over the paper and protect the desktop. Again, this was a luxury item. 

Cleaning Cloth — A cloth or scrap of rag used to clean pens after use.

Very Fine Sandpaper — Used to smooth the tip of new pens.

Using Dip Pens

To use a dip pen, the pen (”nib”) of choice is inserted into the shaft. The pen point is then dipped directly into the ink to a point above the “vent hole” (cut-out section). A certain amount of the ink will be retained by the pen to feed the strokes. Depending on the pen shape and ink type, a single dip can last anywhere from a couple of words to several lines of text.

Some maintenance and cleaning is required to get the pens into a useable state and to keep them in working order. New pens are often coated in a fine film of oil that will prevent it from collecting ink for use. To remove this, the pen can easily be cleaned with alcohol or the oil burnt off by passing it through a flame several times. Once cleaned, the tip will sometimes need to be smoothed with very fine sandpaper, as they can be razor-sharp and tear paper while writing otherwise. After use, pens will also need to be cleaned of residue ink, as letting it dry will affect its function. For this, some water and a cloth/rag will do the job to wipe it down before putting pens away. If not cleaned correctly, they can become corroded.

Pen Styles and Functions

As these pens were used in all areas of society, the diversity of shapes and designs is vast. Here are some of the key elements to a pen and what it brings to its user:

Tip shape — The width of the tip determines the thickness and shape of the line. The most common being “pointed” and “broad-edge” (also “stub” or “italic”).  “Pointed” tips have two tines that come to a single sharp point, and with the application of pressure, can spread and give variation in the line thickness. A “broad-edge” tip has a wide, flat point and will produce a stroke that varies in width from thin to thick, depending on the direction it is moved. 

Tip angle — Aside from the shape of the tip mentioned above, they can also come “pointed” or “ball-pointed” (or “turned-up”). As the name suggests, a “pointed” tipped pen comes to a point completely in line with the rest of the pen. Alternatively, a “ball-pointed” pen has an up-turned tip. The difference between the two is the ease at which they moved over the paper. A “pointed” pen moves best when pulled in the direction of the user but can snag on the paper stock when pushed away from them. The rounded tip of the  “ball-pointed” pen moves more smoothly across the paper, has more flexibility of movement in any direction, and is less prone to snagging on the paper. It was the predecessor to the modern ballpoint pen. As for the uses, a “pointed” pen will produce a finer line than a “ball-pointed” shaped one. For reference, Image-1 shows them side-by-side, Image-3 shows a “ball-pointed” tip and Images-4 and -5 show “pointed” tips.

Flexibility — The flexibility of the two tines of the pen will affect how wide apart they spread. The further apart they spread, the broader the variation in line thickness when pressure is applied. A stiffer pen will offer less variation in line thickness; while more flexible tines will allow the user a greater variation between fine and broad lines with the application of pressure while writing. Additional slots and notches can also improve elasticity in the tines. Think along the lines of touch sensitivity when using a digital drawing tablet.

Pen Shape — This is the most visually obvious element of a pen. The overall shape of the pen can vary greatly, and this element is both practical (impacts the way the pen works) and decorative. This element includes the “shoulder” (the base of the tines that flares out to varying degrees) and the “vent hole” (the cut-out at the base of the slit between the tines). The full list of types is too much to post here, but Wikipedia has a great visual list of them, and The Steel Pen has great, detailed information about dip pens. For now, I will just focus on the types I think our boys would have been most acquainted with:

Straight — Very simple, straight body that angles smoothly into the point. Similar to the Straight are the Beaked and the Bank which have longer tines. (See Image-4 and the 1st, 4th, and 6th pens in Image-9)

Stub — A straight body that then angles sharply inward with short tines.

I personally have a decent collection of pen “nibs”. The ones photographed here are some I recently picked up for Patreon perks and a shaft I kept with my modern pens and markers (it’s too long to fit in the box with the rest of my nibs etc). But after spending an afternoon searching, I can’t seem to find the box I keep the rest of my collection in. When I do I’ll be sure to post some photos on more shapes they can come in!

ThunderCats - “The Unholy Alliance”

My copy didn’t have a title card for some reason.

We start right where we left off, with Snarf talking about how this new planet is nothing like their now-destroyed home planet, and Lion-O agreeing with the sentiment. We're constantly getting hints about how great Thundara was, and it makes one wonder what happened. I did look it up; there will be an episode all about that, so I won't make any jokes about that.

While Snarf and Lion-O share their grievances, Panthro is digging around the ship, talking about how blasted everything is. It's his catchphrase, after all; this blasted ship is blasted, but he says that lot of the parts are not too bad...

...with a completely necessary backflip for good measure! Wow, he just can't turn off his superhero mode for one second. Of course, this backflip jump could be a great animation to use for non-scrap-scavenging things, but considering Panthro's love for building things, he's probably just excited to make that ThunderTank. "No problem", he says in such a way that I wish this review was video, because I love how he says it.

WilyKit and WilyKat are playing with the food, as Snarf desperately tries to catch one of the rations. A perfectly normal activity to do on a planet that may or may not have good food.

Snarf: Snaaarf, the heavy duty...on an empty stomach?

Unlike Garfield, everyone can hear how hungry he is and how much he hates Mondays.

Lion-O suggests he scouts the area all alone to see if they're in a position that is secure. Panthro tells him they need all the help he can get getting those blasted ship parts, but Tygra decides that it would be for the best if the Lord of the ThunderCats does something to protect them. Snarf tries to go with him, and guess what happens.

Lion-O: I don't need a nursemaid anymore! Try to get that through your head, Snarf!

Denied! Snarf ends up going back to the ship, complaining about how he's invisible if there isn't work to be done. I can't really say Snarf would be much help with protecting Lion-O, but Tygra offers a few items.

He hands him the Sword of Omens, perfect for calling the rest of them, alongside a fancy and shiny new Claw Shield that hasn't been mentioned until now. It even functions as a scabbard! It's perfect as a toy acc...er, combat accessory!

All the other ThunderCats ask Tygra if he's really doing a good thing by letting the child-man loose, and his response may as well be addressed to the parents of whoever is watching this. I mean, it's not just an advertisement for the hot new Claw Shield accessory for their action figures, it's got to have some educational value!

Tygra: Lord Lion-O spent 10 galacto-years in a suspension capsule. During that time, he grew in size, but he did not grow up. He missed those first-hand life experiences through which one matures.

See, this isn't just a show where people who have a mild resemblance to cats beat up mutants, this is a show that will teach those kids life lessons as they watch this grown adult have to go through learning them. From what it looks like, Lion-O has to learn that he can't do everything by himself, and it's okay to seek help.

We then cut to the mutants from Plund-Darr, Slithe the lizard man and leader, Monkian, the monkey man. They are busy looking for a new place to build their new fortress. They've already determined that Third Earth is habitable, and there's plenty of ruins they can set foot in to plunder. Clearly, this pyramid with lightning surrounding it would be a good place to check out!

Since the other two are total cowards, they attempt to fly as far away from it as possible...by going directly into it, causing the ship to crash from getting hit by lightning.

Slithe: I see no enemy about!

Monkian: Then what caused the ship to crash?

Jackalman: There's the cause!

No, really?! I guess the lightning messed with their brains, too.

Good news for the villains: whoever owns this pyramid opens the door and invites them in. He even tells them to drop their weapons as they are welcome there. I would think that would be an obvious trap to walk into a pyramid without weapons, but I would also think not to run a plane right into a bunch of lightning. Then again, why wouldn't they think he would be friendly to them; he even brought out Navi to help them through the pyramid. I'm sorry, it was the first thing I thought when I saw this.

Slithe: I am Slithe, and I fear nothing!

Is Slithe lying to keep his cool, or, as a hideous monster himself, he finds horror pleasant? Both could be accurate, but I'd like to think the former. After being led to a room with four huge statues by the magical orb, they notice a casket in the middle of the room. They see nothing here that's alive, and, judging by one's definition of alive, that might be true.

There is an undead guy, though, who makes his presence with a booming voice declaring that while evil lives, so will he. We get our first look at Mumm-Ra. We get little bits and pieces to how powerful and long-lived he is, with a slight touch of world-building. He happens to know the mutants are after the Eye of Thundara, something he knew about even a thousand years ago. Third Earth was called First Earth. Why is this important? Because he's that old, ooh!

The mutants aren't swayed by the sheer power of this undead guy, so he shows them that their ship has sunken into the sand. They can join him, or perish in the desert, and the mutants decide on the former. They also assume that they're only helping him out because Mumm-Ra can't even leave his tomb, which, revealed to the viewer via Mumm-Ra's inner monologue, is not the case.

This scene lasts about a third of the episode, by the way. This episode is mostly exposition.

Anyway, Lion-O wants to hunt down some Third Earth deer. I mean, he is a cat, cats are built for hunting! I'm sure if cats can use swords, they would definitely use them to cut down some fresh morsels, and the Sword of Omens does look like a good enough sword for the job.

The Sword of Omens itself has other plans, jumping right out of Lion-O's hands and into the dirt. Lion-O tries to pick it up, but the sword isn't budget. C'mon, sword, Lion-O wants his deer meat!

Eventually, Professor Oak shows up to tell Lion-O that this isn't the time to use that. Okay, fine, I'll stop comparing Jaga to other show or game's helpers, but he is essentially the tutorial guy. Before he can ask him any more questions, like, "how are you here?", he disappears. Before he can question any of this, the Sword of Omens starts to make noise, and Lion-O is able to pick it up. Using its Sight Beyond Sight ability, he sees nothing...

...and then those mutants suddenly teleport in. Lion-O tries his best to stop them by just standing there. Maybe one of the questions was "why didn't you train me for this kind of thing?" He does know one thing, though, as he lifts his sword and a different but will still totally be stock animation plays.

Lion-O: Thunder, thunder, thunder...

Lion-O: ...Thundercats, mmmpphhhphph!

I'll admit, that made me laugh. One never expects something like this to happen even in 90's shows with transformation sequences, and here's the 80's show subverting the "nobody interrupts the transformation sequence" trope.

Thankfully for Lion-O, that trope doesn't get entirely subverted. He manages to get his mouth free, summoning Panthro and Wilykit and Kat. They explain that Tygra and Cheetara are still busy looking for a good spot for the new home base. They show up, and Lion-O greets them very well...

Lion-O: (barely dodging clubs) I'm...doing...just...fine!

No, he wasn't. After Panthro picks Slithe up, they suddenly disappear before anything can actually happen, though in a different way than they did in the last episode. WilyKit and WilyKat even give some exposition that there's no ships around for them to teleport. Those blasted mutants must have learned some new tricks!

One may be wondering if they could deny the call, and they do bring this up after the mutants have mysteriously disappeared. Lion-O offers to help find Cheetara and Tygra, and Panthro says he should stay here. This exchange does lead to a pretty good line.

Lion-O: I said I'll go, Panthro! I'm not a kid anymore! I'll go.

Panthro: ...riiight. (puts hands on his shoulder)

Again, the line delivery is so good in this episode.

Anyway, we're back to the evil exposition chamber, where Mumm-Ra mocks his new minion's abilities, or lack thereof, to steal candy from an overgrown baby. Forgetting their assumption that he can't leave the lair, or possibly mocking his lack of ability to leave, they tell him he should do it himself.

Mumm-Ra decides, yeah, this is it. Behold his power! Okay, where's his power?!

There it is. With the help of his statues, he can Hulk himself up; just like he does in the theme song! It's even the same animation. What we don't see in the theme song is them flying in the air and screaming. One definitely knows what scream I'm talking about; it's also in the intro. Honestly, it's just the "RAAAUUUUUUGGH" that makes me. Imagine if Ryu shows up, and his battle cry is his K.O. scream.

Meanwhile, Lion-O...

Lion-O: What's that? Ooh, it's hot, and sticky!

Okay, maybe I don't want to know.

No, just kidding, this is Lion-O's childlike innocence when confronted with a lake made of tar. His first instinct is to put his finger in it. Remember kids, don't stick your fingers in tar. It is very difficult to take off. There will be a point to this.

Suddenly, the Sword of Omens shines again, and Lion-O now knows fully well what's going to happen next...

...another evil guy showing up out of nowhere, except way more muscular and probably more worthy of a ThunderCats Ho. He almost considers it, but...

Lion-O: What is that thing? Wait, I know! Thunder! Thunder...No! As Lord of the ThunderCats, I must fight this demon alone!

Wait, so those Mutants were too much for him to handle alone, but this guy who definitely doesn't look like a pushover needs to be fought mano-e-mano? Well, I could argue ganging up on someone isn't exactly heroic. Our hero finally swings his sword...

...and it falls right out of his hands, this time accidentally, and it falls right into the lake of tar. After a few more swipes, he decides to try that call again, but finds out that The Eye of Thundara apparently doesn't work if it's covered in tar. As we learned before, it is very difficult to take it off. If only he completed that Thundercats Ho that time!

After Mumm-Ra dodges a few more sword swipes and plays catch with a tree trunk, he finally pins Lion-O down. What could save him now?

That fancy new Claw Shield, of course! Apparently, looking at his own reflection and/or the shininess was his weakness.

They interrupt this scene to show a scene where Tygra and Cheetara are looking for a place for their own new headquarters, when they say they heard the ThunderCat Roar. Oh, so that's what it was supposed to be called! Also, which one? Did they somehow hear him say "ThunderCats Ho" when the sword was covered with tar, or was it the successful one they missed about 5 minutes ago? We never get an answer to that.

Mostly because it doesn't matter, as the reflection and/or shininess makes Mumm-Ra blast off again. Hey, I said I was going to stop comparing Jaga to other characters. He screams the same scream he's been doing when he got out of his tomb. I wouldn't blame them: it was a very good take; it should be used way more than once!

As Mumm-Ra puts himself back in his coffin and gets mocked by his minions for also failing what they tried to do, an echo that is pretty good, the other ThunderCats come and hear the whole story. In the end, they praise Lion-O for his courage of facing off against a strong guy all by himself, which, by the way, something they were worried about. Maybe the true lesson is, don't worry, sometimes it'll all be fine.

That's pretty much where the episode ends, but it wouldn't end without a Snarf quip.

Snarf: Snarf, never had any use for courage myself, it just gets those who has it into trouble.

Eh, he's not wrong.

BATTLE PLAN:

Double Time!

Shu Yun already screams doubling damage - able to get double strike, as well as Prowess to increase his damage potential. We want Sha Yun to kill every time he gets through.

Lets go crazy with this - we want more combat phases, double damage, (we’ll go light on double strike, since Shu already has it). Unblockability!

We want an unblockability package(shadow, protection from creatures, unblockability are all good). From cards like Steel of the Godhead to Aqueous Form, there’s plenty of enchantments that fit the bill.

Instants like Slip Through Space also help. Distortion Strike, Artful Dodge, a bunch of red cards that go like “creatures without flying can’t block.”

Cheap Spells!

Brainstorm is the start. Any possible 1 drop noncreature spells work great, especially in conjunction with other doubling damage features. 

Protection!

Indestrucibility, Hexproof, Shroud. Pack your favorite enchantments and equipments. Keep Shu Yun alive.

Jeskai Stuff!

Running Jeskai Stuff? Might as well have some fun toys.

Sure, Mantis Rider ain’t so hot for EDH, but Lightning Angel is pretty solid. And in shiny foil form for cheap from FTV: Angels. Jeskai Ascendancy and Jeskai Charm are great cards that fill a lot of functions. 

THE REST:

MonoWhite Equipment is a solid option - if you already got it, might as well use it. Makes Shu Yun a Voltron Commander still, but playing equipment rarely helps increase the quasi-storm counter that is Prowess. You’ll also need to tweak your mana base in favor of white.

With blue, you can also add a comprehensive Counterspell package. Some are less viable - Force of Will is less useful in a tri color deck than a dual or mono blue deck.

I’d recommend the Prof’s manabase guide for 3 colored commanders. Super useful. Only a handful of improvements in Amonkhet and Kaladesh (some nice dual lands) if you’re looking.

WEAKNESSES:

Voltron builds are always vulnerable from not being hastey. Creature reliance is vulnerable to board wipes, single target removal, and forced sacrifices. Usual stuff.

Shu Yun doesn’t have any inborn defense/haste that other Voltron commanders tend to have, so, you know, more vulnerable.

RATINGS:

Control: 7/10 Jeskai has solid removal (mass and single) and bounce for any target, so pretty good option.

Diplomacy: 7/10 Voltron in good colors makes “do this for me and I don’t kill you this turn very persuasive.

Aggro: 8/10 Face is the place. Whack ‘em. With proper multiple combat step setup, you can knock out two people a turn.

Overall Power: 5/10 Make no mistake, Shu Yun is powerful and fun, but a Tier 3 commander that can’t consistently go off fast with disruption protection is not CEDH material. That said, Shu Yun is IMO the second best Khan of the Reforged set (after the endlessly awesome Alesha).

Versatility: 10/10 There are so many options, for brewing, and on the field. Shu Yun is so adaptational.

Affordability: 5/10 Cheap Shu Yun is cheap, and scales well.

Overall Score: 42/60 Shu Yun is a solid commander with a solid score. Get one while it’s super cheap - all the Reforged set khans are great.

One of the 99: Meh. Shu Yun screams build around me, and running him with another Jeskai commander at the helm just gets in the way - Narset wants noncreatures, Numot and Ruhan are about attacking through, and Zedruu asks for a whole different strategy. Breya wants artifacts, Silver legendaries want more slivers.

I cannot, however, speak for all the 4C and 5C commanders, or all the partner combos. Maybe there’s a commander that wants him.

FINAL VERDICT: 

He really is. Shu Yun is a Silent threat, underestimated by other players. I don’t see him around a lot, and wins with the deck seem to come out of nowhere. Get the card, stick it in the binder, brew it later. He’s too good to pass up!
