20. AAA TITLES

..of which the PC also gets. Outside of console exclusives like the Halo or most of the Metal Gear games, the triple A titles that come out on consoles also come out on PC. The Assassin’s Creed games, GTA, Mass Effect, Bioshock, etc.

Let's face it, big-name video game companies put more focus on AAA titles in console form. What usually winds up happening is that AAA games get ported onto PC without really taking into account the proper adjustments needed to make the game work. The result? Games that have poor performance when compared against their console counterparts.

Actually very few games have a hard time getting ported into PC. For every Batman Arkham Knight, there’s at least 5 games that were ported over to PC without issue. 19. CONTROLLERS

18. TELEVISION

What sounds more comfortable, lounging on a couch with your video game on your TV or sitting hunched over in front of a computer screen playing that same game? I rest my case.

The couch sounds nice, so it’s a good thing that it’s possible to connect your PC to your television and play games like that.

17. UPGRADES

If you have an Xbox One or PS4, you can be certain that the game you are playing was created with its abilities in mind. As was stated earlier, PC games (especially the big name ones) tend to get ported over. What this spells for PC gamers is disaster as they then may have to go out and buy a bunch of upgrades (graphics card etc.) to play the game properly. This update issue also applies to the next slide...

Let me tell you a little story.

I’ve owned the same laptop PC for half a decade now. I bought it because I wanted to keep playing video games but was going to move to a dormitory which if you’ve heard the horror stories, you know has as much space as a North Korean prison cell. Suffice to say, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to set up a console and even if I could, with everything going on in my life, it would have been too much to set one up anyways.

So I bought a PC gaming laptop and it served me well since 2012. It was even able to play Fallout 4 on medium settings. Now the one game it wasn’t able to play was Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and that was the point where I realized that the computer was starting to get out of date.

Now if I had bought a proper rig from the start or built it myself as I’ve done recently, I could have fixed that issue by just buying the parts I need upgraded and replacing the outdated parts. I wouldn’t need to but all the parts from scratch and set things up every time one aspect of it falls behind.

That’s the situations console gamers are in and always will be. You can’t open your console and replace outdated parts and heaven help you if one piece of machinery dies, you’ll probably have to buy a new console entirely.

Even though the PC needs to be upgraded, and rarely at that, the fact that you only need to replace one thing rather than the entire thing all over means you’ll keep getting the most out of your hardware for a long time.

16. COST

All of those upgrades cost money, and while buying consoles is not a cheap endeavor, once you have the unit it is going to last you for years. Unless you are telepathic, as a PC gamer you do not know what games coming down the turnpike may push your system too far (thus causing a need for more upgrades).

I’ve always been the kind of person who if I buy something expensive, it’s something I use almost every day. I play video games almost every day so the price wouldn’t bother me too much. Getting good frame rate and graphics on the PC isn’t too hard. If you have an older PC, most of the time you might have to adjust your graphics down to console levels. Unless you’re the kind of person who absolutely needs the best hardware every time the latest comes out, you’ll be playing pretty well for a few years before you decide it’s time to upgrade just as I have.

15. PATCHES

Any patches needed to update your gaming experience for consoles are downloaded automatically. Not so with PC games. In that case, you have to download and install these patches manually. Boo.

Not only is that false, as on Steam updates are downloaded automatically, but even if that were the case how hard is it to press the ‘ok’ button when a popup comes up asking if you want to download the patch?

As if to imply that downloading patches on PC is something that requires you to understand coding. It’s not. Again, at worst a popup will appear when you click the game saying it’s outdated and needs a patch and you just click ‘ok’. Maybe you have to type your password in. Big fucking whoop it’s as easy as logging onto Twitter.

14. EXCLUSIVE TITLES

Be honest, would you rather play ARMA III or Halo Reach? PCs have exclusive titles...but they pale in comparison to the exclusive games on consoles.

I’d love to play Halo on PC but Microsoft are greedy fucks. You shouldn’t be touting console exclusives as a reason consoles are better than PC, you should be opposing them. If you’re a PS4 user but want to play Halo, tough shit. You’re going to have to buy a whole new console and go through all the business of setting up and plugging in. It’s not just something that affects PC gaming.

13. HACKING AND MODDING

Without a doubt hacking and modding occurs with online console gaming, but it is much more rampant in PC gaming. At worst you will have to worry about Distributed-Denial-Of-Service attacks on servers (like the Lizard Squad attacks on PSN) for console gaming. With PC gaming you never know what you can expect, you'll be lucky just to get DDOS'd.

Raise your hand PC gamers: how horrible was the last hacker you’ve encountered on an online match? Was it so bad you only wished you could have been DDOS’d in place of the sheer inhumane shit the hacker did to you?

Oh, wait? It was just a sniper on TF2 using an aimbot? You got the enemy team to kick them? Oh, ok. Never mind.

There’s hackers on PC and there’s hackers on console. Anything super sever is going to be super rare because the vast majority of people are just playing online to play video games and not cause trouble.

12. QUICK ONLINE GAMES

It takes no time at all to find a server to play on when you go online with your console. The same cannot be said with PC games.

On console games, they typically use a matchmaking system. I remember that when I had a console and at times it could take several minutes to find a match. One of the reasons I hated the Meet Your Match update for TF2 was because it incorporated a matchmaking system that was like consoles where you had to sit around and wait for a match to be found rather than just scrolling through a server list and picking one yourself.

Finding a game on console can be anything but fast. I’d rather you spend your time advocating for a better system of finding matches in general than trying to claim that playing the waiting game is somehow superior to anything PC has.

11. GRAPHICS

Naturally consoles have superior graphics capabilities compared to PCs. You would need a PC with an extreme amount of upgrades to match the same level of graphics found on the PS4 and Xbox One.

As I’ve said earlier, even a meh-ish PC that was built a few years ago is able to hold up to consoles. This is simply false.

10. MEDIA OUTLETS

While it is not fair, the fact remains that video games receive much more attention in console form from the media (both gaming sites and mainstream media). It should be noted, however, that coverage can be both positive and negative (like when Kotaku and other gaming "news sites" threw the entire gaming community under the bus based on straw-man arguments...really just to divert attention from their own journalistic failures).

The thing about video game journalists is that they’re obsolete. You’re able to get as good of an understanding or better from watching a review of it on Youtube like TotalBiscuit or a let’s play of it. But props for being pro-gamer in the face of the shitheads at Kotaku.

9. EASIER SET-UP

Consoles are much more friendly for the less tech-savvy in terms of set-up. It's a fact.

If you’re building a PC from scratch, yes. Of course actually putting the parts together is going to be more difficult. But if you’re buying one pre-made, it’s about as easy as consoles. For my own PC, there’s wires from the rig connecting the mouse, keyboard, and hdmi cable to the monitor. There’s also one wire going from the rig and one from the monitor going to an outlet. It’s no more complex than connecting wires around with consoles to a TV.

8. MORE DEMAND

There is simply more demand for the console game market to push out units quicker. If the game is multi-platform, it is pretty much guaranteed that consoles will get the game first (Grand Theft Auto 5 is a great example of this).

Most games that come out on consoles tend to also come out on PC at the same time. Unless you’re an impatient child who can’t wait a bit longer for a game to come out, this shouldn’t be too difficult.

7. FUTURE

Game developers as a whole treat consoles as the future, not PCs. This does not seem to be shifting any time soon.

How so? What do they say exactly? Consoles have existed for gaming since the 1980s and are nothing new.

6. CONSOLES ARE FOR GAMING

The reason why consoles are better than PCs for gaming is simply this, consoles are FOR playing video games. Look at it like this, a smart phone may have other capabilities (like internet) but its ultimate purpose is communication. In the same manner consoles have other features (Netflix apps etc.), but their main purpose is to play video games. For PCs, the converse is true. Games are a tacked-on function, not a primary function.

The PC I built was made specifically with gaming in mind as was the laptop PC I owned before that. In any case, even if PCs aren’t made exclusively for gaming, that doesn’t mean they’re worse for gaming than consoles. PCs still handle graphics, frame rate, and customization better than consoles. It also ruins your point when you mention that consoles are shifting away from gaming only which is something PC has achieved from the start. On the same machine I could play a video game, post on Tumblr, watch some porn, and then watch some movies.

If it was found out tomorrow that Trump’s tiny hands could assemble nanomachines better than the equipment actually used to assemble nanomachines, companies would start shifting their designs toward being more like his hands.

5. PC MASTER RACE

If you ever want to have any sort of participation in the gaming community, get ready to mix it up with these snobs. Everything is a spitting contest with them, and deviation is heresy. They don't just disagree with you, they question your mother's virtue. If you thought the kids on XBox Live were bad, you haven't seen a thing. Remember, these are the troglodytes that brought us GamerGate.

Oh you were so close with the video game journalist stuff and yet, you fall so far away.

Where were you during the console wars? Like in the 90s it was between Nintendo and Sega and they actively took potshots at each other in their own commercials. “Sega does what Ninten-Don’t” is just an official version of the “PS3 has no games” memes. For every gaming system, there will be assholes and while the whole “PC Master Race” thing can get obnoxious, it’s certainly no worse than the crap console gamers spit at each other.

4. CENTRAL MEDIA CENTER

Plug your console into the TV and you've got all your media right there, no sweat. Streaming apps, movies and music, whatever you've got. You don't have to mess with another device like a Chromecast. Right out of the box, your console is already a media hub. PCs have to cobble something together and hope for the best.

I want to watch movies, Youtube video, porn, write a blog post, then a note to an online friend, and of course, play video games. What’s easier? Using a computer with a mouse and keyboard and access to the internet that I only need to pay for once or using a console where trying to type things in is a chore and you have to pay for the internet twice, once for the actual internet and the other for the console to be able to access it.

Steaming can be tricky, from what I’ve heard because I haven’t done it before, but there’s gotta be good guides on how to do it and easy set ups. Literal goddamn children are able to set up livestreams.

3. THERE'S A WIDER COMMUNITY

Most of your (normal) friends have consoles, because they're more prevalent in mainstream society. If you want to play with the hardcore crowd, they're there. But if you just want to have a casual game with a regular person who won't call you names spelled with punctuation, that won't happen with PC games. As well as everything in between. Being more social with more people is a good thing.

Jokes on you, pal. I don’t have any friends.

But weren’t you just mentioning in your 5th point that when playing console, you run the risk of having some kid insult your mother? Like XBox Live has the stereotype that you’ll run into a kid saying he fucked your mother. And if consoles are made for gaming, would that not more likely attract the hardcore crowd than something not exclusively made for gaming? And even the premise of having more people around means it’s more likely you’ll run into assholes.

You can have plenty of casual games on PC. Nothing about the system means you can’t play games for the sake of fun.

Also apparently a bunch of friends owning gaming PCs and playing together isn’t normal...as opposed to a bunch of friends owning consoles and playing together. Indeed...

2. IT'S A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD WHERE SKILLS ARE WHAT MATTER

So in other words, a more hardcore mindset which previously you said could only be found on PC.

When you play on a console, you only have to worry about getting beat by another player -- not a better machine. Play on a PC and you might be going up against some weirdo that dropped ten grand on a computer since they don't have to spend it on a girlfriend. Play on a console, and it's skill vs. skill. Not skill vs. disposable income.

I like how vitriolic this guy is getting. First friends who play PC together aren’t normal and now PC gamers have no gf. It’s true for me, but aren’t you the guy who claimed that PC is the platform where you’ll get these kinds of insults?

Just like on consoles, with PC having a good internet is usually the defining factor rather than how expensive the rig is. No idea where this guy got this information but it’s wrong.

1. IT'S MORE CONDUCIVE TO BEING SOCIAL IN THE REAL WORLD

Couch, TV, friends.... add some snacks and beer, you've got yourself a good time. Consoles have and will always be better for playing friends in the real world. PC gamers sit by themselves with their own terminal, alone. You can't have a few friends over for a Madden tournament if all you have is a PC.

You could call me a hipster streamer, doing it long before cutting the cable cord was cool. Cutting cable isn’t a fad anymore, it’s turned into a tsunami that’s changing the entire entertainment industry.

If you love popular TV shows and want to keep them after cutting the cable cord, definitely get Hulu. It has tons of shows like The Bachelor, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family, Shark Tank, and Family Guy. There’s also a few Hulu-exclusive series like The Handmaid’s Tale.

For Families: Disney+

In 2019, Disney launched its own streaming service. At $7.99 per month, it’s one of the most affordable options available.

It has an extensive library of Disney movies and television shows including the Star Wars films, most of the Marvel films, and many programs from networks owned by Disney. Disney+ also boasts a few of their own shows, like the Mandalorian. If I had kids, I’d definitely get a subscription.

For Sports Lovers: ESPN+

You’ll be able to stream MLB, NHL, UFC, and tons of college games live. Unfortunately, there aren’t any NFL or NBA games yet. I hope this changes in the future.

Even better, it comes as part of a bundle with Hulu and Disney+ at $12.99/month. By getting that bundle, you can almost replace an entire cable subscription. That’s an incredible deal.

For Original Shows: Netflix

Netflix is the original streaming service and still a great option. The volume of original content is absurd. They release more interesting stuff than I can possibly watch. There’s also a decent amount of non-Netflix films and TV shows. Believe it or not, you can also still subscribe to their DVD service too. The most expensive streaming plan is $8.99. The premium plan, which includes 4k streaming is $15.99 per month. DVD plans are priced separately.

Best for Bundled Services: Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime offers a lot of the same movies you’ll find on Netflix, as well as some television shows you won’t find elsewhere. There are a number of great Amazon Prime shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Boys, and Good Omens.

While it doesn’t have as much depth as other services, the TV subscription is part of a much larger Amazon Prime bundle. Don't Fear the Laptop Ban: You CAN Work from Your Phone

The laptop ban. Oh how that worries me.

I actually treasure the time I spend working on a plane. It’s uninterrupted blocks of time that let me finish up presentations, develop new content, catch up with emails (offline so that I don’t receive immediate replies and I can clear out my inbox) and just have clear thinking time without my regular distractions.

But we have to face the reality that the powers that be may determine at any moment that laptops and tablets on planes are a danger to us all and will expand the ban to all international flights or even domestic.

So for the past couple of weeks, I have been working out a system to make sure I can WORK — really WORK — from my iPhone 7+.

Today is the time to test my theories and practice what I preach. I’m on a 4-hour flight to Chicago, and I’m writing this on my phone.

Yes, it’s working.

Yes, it’s easy.

Yes, you can do it, too.

Here’s how:

Step One: Get a Larger Phone

The guy sitting next to me on this plane has a teeny, tiny iPhone SE, and I think the little size would drive me nuts. If you’re going to be doing this on a regular basis, you want a screen you don’t have to strain to see.

You’re also going to want a lot of storage so you can work with downloaded files that you store locally. And you want to make sure it has a pretty fast processor (like a phone created in the past year).

Step Two: Get a Bluetooth Keyboard

I don’t think I could work for 4 hours on my phone if I didn’t have an external keyboard — and, more importantly, the RIGHT keyboard. Try out different sizes, shapes, configurations and features because you want to be comfortable as you work.

I tried a number of keyboards before settling on this one. Here are some pros and cons of the ones I tried:

Compact with a Stand I thought this style would be the best option. It’s an all-in-one keyboard with a little lip for your phone. First, the keyboard was way too cramped. The second problem is that the lip was really small, and my phone case made my phone too big to stay on the lip.

Ergonomic Keyboard I liked the idea of this style because it seemed to me that the curved keyboard would work well with the angle your arms might be on a plane. But this keyboard had a little trouble connecting to the bluetooth, and I found that I kept pressing the wrong keys. I’m sure over time I would get used to the shape.

Full-Size Keyboard Ding ding ding! The iClever Keyboard is my favorite, and I’m using it right now. It is exactly the same size as my laptop keyboard, and it folds up to half its size for travel. I also like that you can set the keyboard to match your platform — Mac, Windows or Android. Several of the keyboards could do this, and it’s handy to have the same shortcuts and keys.Another thing I like about this keyboard is that it has a light-up background so I can see it in a dark cabin. It also connects instantly and reliably to my phone — all I have to do is open it.

The iClever is not perfect, though. I still bunched up my shoulders to keep my fingers on the keys. I have also noticed that it skips a keystroke every once in a while when I’m typing quickly (all the ones I’ve ever used have that problem). Another challenge is that it’s a little big for the tray. When I was testing at home, I looked up the “standard” airplane tray size online. And — surprise, surprise — modern trays are smaller. Also, I don’t like that I can’t see the status of the battery anywhere. It just shows green if it’s charged. Ummm. If it wasn’t charged, wouldn’t it not show anything?Lastly, and this is petty, it clicks. I hate to click.Update: I found another annoyance — the P key seems to take extra effort. I keep writing “hone” instead of “phone.” Again, petty. But still.Another lesson — the keyboard doesn’t work in every program — including the iPhone search feature (what? Really?). It also has different capabilities in different apps. I’m using notes right now, and some of my keyboard shortcuts don’t work, although they work in Microsoft Word and other places.

Step Three: Get a Phone Stand

You’re going to want to prop up your phone at a nice angle so you don’t have to strain to see the screen. Look for a stand with a little grip to it so it doesn’t slide off the tray. Another thing to think about is how much space it needs on your tray. You want as small of a footprint as possible so everything will fit.

Again, I tried several varieties to find the right one.

Case with Stand I like stands that hold my license and a couple of credit cards in a pocket in the back but is still thin, so I’m kinda picky. I found a nice-looking case that had a stand and card slot, but I didn’t like that it would only hold my phone in the horizontal position, although the solution I’m using right now also has the horizontal limitation, and I’m finding it works just fine for the work I need to do (email, writing, PowerPoints).

Goofy Stand I bought this just for kicks — figured it would make a good conversation starter. But it took up too much space on the tray, so I’m going to use it to prop up my iPhone when I’m watching TV in the bathtub. #NotKidding

Sturdy Aluminum Stand The stand I thought would be perfect is a little easel with a small lip. It’s sturdy and small. #win I was happily using it on this plane until I returned from using the facilities. Then I accidentally sat on it, and instead of fishing it out, I just tried out the PopSocket below, and I think I prefer the PopSocket.

PopSocket Like the stand with arms, I bought this as a novelty item because it was kinda cute. It’s a collapsible popup thingy that adheres to your case. At first I eliminated it because it doesn’t work for a vertical stand, but as I mentioned before, turns out I might not need the vertical. I love that it pops in when you don’t need it as a stand so it stays small but nearby.

Step Four: Buy a Strong Power Supply

As I mentioned before, I have no way of knowing how much juice is left on my keyboard. And working this way on my phone is hard on the battery (while listening to Adele and occasionally taking a break to play Two Dots). Halfway through the flight I was at 50%. But my trusty external battery was standing by.

Get a high-power one with two or more charging ports so you can simultaneously charge your keyboard and phone. If you’re lucky enough to have a plug at your seat, you can plug your charger into the outlet so it continues to charge even as it charges your other devices. My Anker charger has 13000mAh. Don’t rely on the cheap ones you get from trade shows — they’re frequently like 2200mAh and won’t last long enough.

Step Five: Plan Ahead for What You Need to Work on

This may be a challenge for some of you who are used to just opening your laptop and having all your files and programs with you at all times. You may be able to work on your email offline (or connect to wifi on the plane, although it’s not only not secure but it’s also usually pretty pathetic). Gmail lets me do this, keeping outgoing mail in the outbox until I connect. It’s also easy to create new content in various apps without having to worry about working on an existing file. Right now I’m using Apple Notes with zero problems.

Where you really have to plan ahead is when you’re working on documents you already have, which probably happens a lot. For this you’re going to want both a cloud-based synchronization system (Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.), plus the accompanying app that will let you edit it.

Microsoft Office Mobile Apps are INSANELY good on this front. Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps have almost every single feature that the software programs do. You can format, add pictures, apply themes, add headers/footers, create tables and much more. It takes a little more patience because you have to choose the options from drop down menus and scroll more than you have to in the full versions. But I’m really impressed — and they’re FREE! But to get the full functionality, I highly recommend an Office 365 subscription.

Unsurprisingly Office apps work the best with Microsoft OneDrive. Just save the document in your OneDrive account on your main computer, then download it for offline use in your program. Edit offline (or on), and your version is synched as soon as you’re connected again. It’s also autosaved. Microsoft now integrates seamlessly with Dropbox, so that’s an option as well.

One time I had to create a brand new presentation on a plane, and PowerPoint worked just like the computer version. But for this trip I tried to download one of my existing PPTs to edit on the plane. My PPTs are MASSIVE — like 300MB — because of all the graphics and multimedia, so it just never synched. But if it’s a regular document or other file of moderate size, you’ll be fine.

One option for getting your files on your phone to work on is to use an external drive. I tried this one and yuck. Total fail. Perhaps other external drives will work better for you, but I’ll rely on the cloud to pull info to my phone.

Step Six: Plan for When You Get Off the Plane

If you checked your laptop in your luggage (I bought a Pelican hard case just in case the rules change), all you have to do to is connect to the cloud and wait for your phone and laptop to synchronize.

But if you’ve ditched your laptop for the trip because working with your phone is all you need, you can use some inexpensive dongles and cables to expand the functionality of your phone even further.

Hotel TVs frequently have HDMI ports, and you can carry a long HDMI cable so you can use your TV as a larger monitor for your phone. Then all you need is a dongle to connect your phone. I have both a VGA and an HDMI dongle (I like saying dongle). You can also connect your phone using a Chromecast device for Android or an Apple TV for iPhone.

You can also use these tools to connect to projectors. PowerPoint, Google Slides and Keynote also have a play mode for projectors that works just like a regular computer when you go into presentation mode. Then you just swipe your finger across the screen to advance slides. You can even draw on the slides to emphasize points.

Another option that’s fairly new: Presentations now have a live mode that lets your audience members pull up the presentation on their own devices so they can follow along without having to see a full screen. Advantage: It’ll keep everyone from checking phones during your presentation. Disadvantage: You may be presenting to a group of people who are staring at their phones instead of engaging with you as presenter.

So that’s it — all the research I’ve done to prove it’s (fairly) easy to use your phone as a computer. I doubt it would have taken longer on a laptop to write this 2000-word post.

The flight attendant just told us to put up our devices, so perfect timing.
