Migration
YA sci-fi
an upper class girl joins a military boarding school to avoiding her domineering mother and community that may go bankrupt and become lower class
as an intuitive, she’s paired with a fighter - trained in high tech simulations and games to predict seconds in the future
when she’s finally managing to settle in, and get along with her partner, the school is attacked by unknown forces and she starts experiencing strange things - and they have to question what they know to save their people

I’ll admit I struggle with most YA fantasy these days and this is one of those - it felt a little young for me#and I struggled to get a handle on a lot of the worldbuilding - but what was there was an interesting blend of cultures#and i love how te ao Māori was woven into it while also having a lot of originality#but I wanted a bit more detail to the worldbuilding - I think not knowing enough hindered my understanding of the broader plot#it definitely has a bunch of elements and I couldn’t quite get a handle on the tone or how they fit together#though it is explained in the end#and themes of alien invasion / colonisation as well as migration were interesting - tho in some ways it also felt a little muddied on that?#I enjoyed her friendship with Janalel while it lasted and the enemies-to-friends situation with Lase#I am slightly confused by reviews talking about the romance / love interest because it seemed entirely platonic to me -#the amount of times she insisted that she feels a connection to him but it’s NOT romantic; which doesn’t change at any point!#I do appreciate that. though I really would have loved more depth to all the relationships including that one#I’m also not sure if it’s supposed to be standalone or if there’ll be more?#I think I’d still recommend it to the right audience though!
