Thinking About If Magic Was Actually Radioactive Fallout?
Okay, I finally finished some important character designs to fully comprehend this idea because I've got some thoughts about Glorious magic lore!
Glorious is post-apocalyptic, I don't want to spoil how the world ends (it's purposefully unknown), but it did have something to do with nuclear energy.
Grant it, none of this is scientifically accurate to how Nuclear energy REALLY works but this is magical fantasy land that's based around dream logic so I do what I want!!!
Magic is called "Niches"
THE THREE PROVEN NICHES...
VIGOR : BODY, LIQUIDS, BLOOD, LIFE, NATURE, WARM & DARK TONES : ALPHA RADATION
" Vigor is the Essence within us. Learning vigor is to learn how to harvest what we have to obtain what we want. While you cannot change things to extreme proportions, you can get close to what you desire. (Or at least make it seem so.) " < copy from docs.
Vigor is essentially blood, something in all of "us". It represents background radiation, as many in the Oblivion live among radio fallout. Often used for Treating Minor Medical Issues (Cuts, Bruises, etc)
Physical Changes: Odd Eye & Flesh Colors. Glittering & Dripping Textures.
Mental Changes: Causes a feeling of stability & calmness. Withdrawals cause feelings of rage & dizziness.
Character Example:
Brass is a good example of someone with high amounts of Vigor radiation, her body was squeezed by radioactive machinery causing her internal vigor to blend and twist into what she currently is. Her dripping marks are a direct link, with them getting brighter when she starts to express her niche (like when building things!)
Fun fact: The little blue veins are traces of Ichor...

AMBROSIA : SOUL, SOILDS, DREAMS, SPACE, PASTELS & METALLIC TONES : BETA RADATION
Ambrosia is a man-made concept, a forbidden fruit, the idea of "sin". It was created by people to produce euphoria, but many fear it. The best way I can describe it is like... cooking, dancing, singing, etc. Basically the "soul" (for lack of a better term).
It can be embedded into objects & food, thus is often associated with Alcohol, Gold, & Art.
Physical Changes: Extra Limbs; wings, tails, horns, extra eyes, etc. Metallic Markings & Textures. Constellations & Space Things.
Mental Changes: Causes feelings of Euphoria & Love. Withdrawals causes feelings of Anxiety & Paranoia.
Character Example:
Cress is an intense example of ambrosia radiation influence. She has consumed so much from ambrosia laced alcohol. Ambrosia has warped her body to match how her mind views celestial bodies. Ambrosia is the easiest to manipulate, has the best feeling to use, but can cause the most physical damage.
Fun(?) Fact: Ambrosia is the most addictive of all Niches, Cress runs a support group for them... or so she claims...

ICHOR : MIND, PLASMA, GAS, ELECTRICITY, GHOST, COOL or VIBRANT COLORS : GAMMA RADIATION
Found deep within the Earth, Ichor can be found in many states from Solid, to Liquid, to it's most potent: Gas. It produces a lively spark, comparable to fossil fuels and coals, but has the environmental affect of nuclear energy.
For me, Ichor is both the easiest and hardest to explain element. It is the main cause of revenancy, which is basically radioactive poisoning. BUT it also powers electricity, it makes cars run, its the reason Golems can even live and yet... what is it?
It's dangerous, but beautiful. And regardless of what the people of the Oblivion believe, it is natural.
Physical Changes: "Inorganic" growths (Gems, Wires, Cloth, Etc), Electrical/Veiny Markings, Prismatic/Rainbow Colors, Mist/Fog/Gas, Zombie Revenant Stuff
Mental Changes: Causes feelings of "Sanity" & "Connectedness", withdrawal causes feelings of Spiraling & Isolation.
Character Example:
I couldn't find a more serious image of her but it's Bootleg Jean Jacket. BJJ is, without any spoilers, a cloud (and other biological stuff) forcibly mixed together with Ichor. Her markings are constantly moving, her flag tail is translucent and feels less like cloth and more like fins.
Fun Fact: All Revenants have Ichor Poisoning, but not all with Ichor Poisoning are Revenants. Will talk about Revenants some other time cause that's a whole can of inky worms.

SO NOW LET'S GO TO "REAL WORLD" (in Glorious) EXAMPLES:
Let's look at the INKVILE family...
First Up: June, Her niche was Ambrosia! She would sing magical hymns that would influence things around her, like make light shows or create illusions. However, Ambrosia cannot be used while pregnant due to birth complications, so she had to stop... which lead to horrific withdrawals.
Her hair, while using ambrosia, looked like a night sky. Now it's just silky dark hair that occasionally shines when she's humming. And unseen here, but she has intense gold scaring on her stomach.
Secondly: Mason. He was born Engkanto, which is a fancy world for Half-Fae. Faeries are humans whose blood turned to vigor over the course of the many years after the mass extinct. This is a past Mason has tried his whole life to ignore (due to fantasy racism basically). So he uses what little magic he knows to glamour his hair to appear darker.
His niche would kind of be Vigor? But he does work at an Ichor Plant which makes things a bit complexed...
Now let's talk about the KIDS!
Look at their hair, it's so bright and colorful. And that's actually from their dad! Not only because his hair is naturally bright, but because of being constantly exposed to Ichor, his children developed vibrant genes.
They are somewhat Engkanto. (one day I'll go into the Human-Fae scale and how it's not a direct cutoff point but a gradient but I've already written so much). So much like their father, they can glamour their hair to appear less bright.
Neither like doing this, it's tiring to do for a long time and all the kids at school have cool hair so they don't fit in :(
They also use their clothing to hide spells that their mother has taught them, colors can hide very minor enchantments! So school kids tend to have colorful clothes at school with various knowledge-based enchantments! (Like luck to succeed on a test or such)

THE TWO DEBATED NICHES...
I'll run through these because we're getting WAY too deep here...
CLEAR: Clear is a state of mind. Clear is those who wish not to seek a path or think about their capabilities. Clear is for those who have yet to experience this side of the Oblivion. Clear is for those have not come in contact with magical forces or mystics.
Mason would consider himself clear
It is debated because it is described as the "Nothing Niche"... but can nothing truly exist?
VOID: Based of the physical location of the void, dark, all consuming, unpredictable, in some causes seen as actively malicious or just a force of nature.
Debated due to being described as the "Everything Niche"... how can it be all? Why make a title for such a thing.
Most don't believe this even exist except for a select few.

There's still so much I haven't even touched like Fae's relationship to Niches, Siren's allergic reactions to Niches, How Ichor Poisoning works, and how Spirits are created!!! SO MUCH MORE UGHHHH
