Instead of doing anything useful I'm brushing up on my shorthand and that just says a lot about where I'm at
#if you too are a shorthand afficionado I use teeline#I keep thinking about switching to gregg but then looking at their alphabet and thinking my handwriting is too messy for that#I don't think I could keep the distinctions between long and short letters and I don't like the idea of phonetic spelling#but gregg looks so much prettier when it's written out on the paper

There's a poll going around asking the question, "Do you prefer writing on paper or a device, and if so, which device?"
The best device I ever had for writing was a PDA equipped with an input system called Quikwriting.
If you're not old enough to remember the days before smartphones, back then mobile phones only did the basic phone stuff like calling and text messages, and if you wanted to do other things, playing games and reading ebooks and writing and getting travel directions and so on, you had to carry around a second device to do those on. This device was called a personal digital assistant, or PDA.
And nobody had yet invented a tiny little keyboard that worked well for a majority of people, so there were a variety of other input systems available. Most PDAs came with a stylus that you could use to draw on the screen, so some input systems used that. Some claimed to let you write on the screen in your normal handwriting and it would be converted to text (and they even got it right most of the time); some got you to write in their own adapted alphabet where each letter form was simplified and made more distinct from other similar letters. And some abandoned the alphabet entirely.
My favourite of the input methods I tried was Quikwriting, in which you wrote by making little loops with the stylus in the corner of the screen. Each loop began and ended within a central zone, and the size and direction of the loop indicated the character. If the stylus had left a trail while you were writing, it might have looked something like this:
...except that the words would all be written on top of each other without lifting the stylus. (And of course you'd write the loop that meant a space between each word, and the loop that meant a full stop at the end.) It took a while to memorise what the motion for each character was, but once you had it down you could write whole words, sentences, paragraphs in one long swoop.
It's the only input system I've ever used where I could write long passages as fast as I thought them, without having to keep an eye on the text to make sure that what I'd written was what I meant to write. And maybe, who knows, the fact that the physical motion resembled just doodling in a margin was also part of the appeal.
These days I have an Android smartphone with a tiny little keyboard that's okay for writing short messages and only occasionally tries to change what I've written into what it thinks I meant, but I don't use it to write anything of any significant length. As far as I know, nobody's ever made a proper implementation of Quikwriting for Android, and I suspect it wouldn't be the same using a finger instead of a stylus.
But maybe I'll go and look again, just in case...

this week i've been working on the revisions of chapters 1-10 of Cycle of the Serpent. i've posted revised 1-6 on ao3, but am still rewriting chapter 7. so, here's a bit of that!!
The Sleeping Giant rarely got any sort of messages by courier, but occasionally, the Jarl would send a letter asking for help with a particular matter in an isolated corner of the hold. This letter wasn't from him. Handwriting spiraled and jagged all at once, and when he handed it over to the trio, Wyndrelis inhaled sharply. This was the handwriting from the cellar, he thought, glancing rapidly between his two companions. "Here, some old woman came by and dropped this off a few days ago," Orgnar grunted, "since you helped Camilla and Lucan Valerius, figured you might be interested." He tapped the letter for emphasis, Athenath picking it up and scanning the writing carefully. In short, it was a request for help with a specific pest problem, a wolf that had been stalking a remote corner of wilderness just outside of Riverwood, a beast that had a habit of intimidating and stalking travelers, but specifically a relative of the letter's author, who implored whomever got this request be careful and take extra caution. Emeros sucked his inner cheek between his cheek as he thought it over. Really, the trio should be well on their way to Whiterun by now. Who knew how long that dragon was going to hold off on attacking the town of Riverwood? Would this make any difference? Wolves did as they pleased, but everything in this letter detailed a lone wolf, something uncommon, a thing that set his nerves on edge. He took the letter into his hands and inquired, "did the woman who dropped this off say anything about the wolf itself? Any distinctive markings, any signs of illness?" Orgnar rubbed his chin thoughtfully, staring off into the hearth. "Now that you mention it, she said to be on the look out for a wolf with one grey ear." "One grey ear?" Emeros repeated. Orgnar nodded. "Yeah, that's what she said."
"Oddly specific," Emeros noted as he pocketed the letter. He looked between the other Mer as he turned on his heel, making an easy stride back to the trio's room and gathering his arrows and donning the armor they'd pulled off a bandit corpse. The leather was fairly thick, and the gauntlets helped. Plus, the fur lining kept him warm, though that was a tad unnecessary, with it being late summer. "So you're going after it?" Athenath asked, leaning in the doorway as Emeros examined his arrows. "We," he corrected, "I think we should all see this thing up close." "Why?" The confusion sprawled even further along his features, Wyndrelis inching by Athenath and into the room, tugging his own armor on over his clothes. Emeros looked between the Altmer, then the Dunmer, then the windows high above them, lining part of the upper wall. "One grey ear is a very odd marking, and if it's a lone wolf, it could be injured or sick. It's best to take it down now, instead of risking it spreading something to the other wildlife. Don't worry," he nudged a small smile up his mouth, "as long as we keep our distance, we'll be alright." Athenath shrugged, snatching their own armor up and buckling it on atop their clothes. He wasn't keen to encounter sick animals in the backwoods of Whiterun Hold, but the trio burned with curiosity. An old woman dropping off a note about a strange animal sounded ideal for one more distraction from the reality of their situation, that in a day or two they'd be standing before a Jarl, explaining the things they'd seen in Helgen, and telling him just how much danger his Hold was in.
When they told Orgnar they were heading out after the old woman's wolf, he trudged to the porch and pointed them in the direction of the barrow, explaining that the woman - he'd not caught her name, didn't think to at the time - had told him she lived out that way, and the wolf stalked the trees near the river, to follow it carefully. Emeros furrowed his brow. "Isn't that where we camped last night?" Athenath asked. He nodded. "I believe so." The Bosmer moved from the porch of the inn to the road, leading the trio out to the bridge. He carried a few healing potions he'd bought off of Lucan, but hoped desperately he wouldn't need to cure ataxia or bone-break fever this journey. Awful conditions, he'd seen plenty of cases of them in his travels, and couldn't guarantee he'd have the ingredients on hand to brew up his own disease cure potion for them.

Ezekiel 37:1-38:23, James 1:19-2:17, Psalms 117:1-2, Proverbs 28:1
Today is the 18th day of November welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is a privilege to be here with you today around the Global Campfire where we can keep warm and find comfort in fellowship with one another and nourishment from the scriptures for our souls. So, wonderful, wonderful to be here with you today as we do take that next step forward. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week and our next step forward is Ezekiel chapters 37 and 38.
Commentary:
Okay. So, while we were reading through the letter to the Hebrews, we had all kinds of theological concepts. We had all kinds of discussion that gave us the story from a Hebrew perspective and connected Jesus to the Hebrew story, explaining that this was always expected to happen. And, so, we had those kinds of concepts. In the letter to the Romans, another long letter in the New Testament we got a lot of theology that that forms Christian theology from the apostle Paul. We should be noticing now that we’re just a couple of days into reading this rather short letter from James that this is different. This isn't like trying to explore theological concepts per se sort of to give us an underpinning or an understanding of things. It's very, very, very practical. It’s sort of like, okay so you’ve got the theology. If you don't live the theology though, like if you don't live what you have learned, if it's just information it's a problem. So, he’s practically trying to get us to sow into our lives what we've learned, what we've heard so that it becomes a way of life. So, I quote from James because he says it better. “Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like someone looking at his own face in a mirror. For he looks at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what kind of person he was.” So, that's the analogy that James chooses to use. And we can…we can understand it just as well today as they would've been able to understand it in the first century. If you are just gonna hear and you’re gonna to take on board the Bible as information for informational purposes but you don't implement anything that you've heard, it doesn't actually begin to transform your life because you're…you're adapting yourselves to it, than that is the same as look…as looking at yourself in the mirror, walking away and forgetting what you look like, right? So, we can see that James is interested in our actions. It's a nonbiblical proverb but one that we've all heard, “actions speak louder than words.” And this is basically James’ point. And sort of the next point that he's making that has to be put into action and that we should listen to is that favoritism, making a distinction that someone is better than someone else or making a distinction between us, we are better in some way than someone else is completely misguided. He also tells us today that you think your religious and you think you're walking it out, but you can't control your tongue then you are only fooling yourself. And like, we should take a long pause on that one. If your words and your deeds are not in alignment there is a disconnect in your life and you're fooling yourself. I told you. James is unflinching and we were led into probably the most famous passage in James, “faith without works is dead” and that's what he's been leading up to. You're fooling yourself if you’re just talking a talk but not living into it or walking the walk. I don’t want to be to cliché here, but I don't…I mean what could be more poignant in our world today? And let's…James is not trying to externalize this so not…let’s not go, “oh yeah, it's really bad out there, a lot of people are duplicitous. A lot of people are saying things that they don't do or they’re talking out of both sides of their mouths.” That's all true. What about you? What about me? What about us? This is in our laps. James isn’t gonna let us divert. We’re njot gonna be able to disassociate from our own selves while judging everybody else. And, so, putting it back in the words of James, I quote, “what good is it my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can such faith save him?” And then he says, “faith without works is dead.” And he uses another example to show us how that's true. So, you have somebody. You see somebody that is suffering that has a lack, that is in need, without clothes, they don't have enough food and you encounter them, pat them on the back and tell them to go in peace and stay warm. Maybe even say a prayer for them and ask God to give them food but you don't help them, then faith without works is dead. So, I quote, “if a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food and one of you says to them go in peace, stay warm and be well fed but you don't give them what the body needs, what good is it? In the same way faith if it does not have works, is dead by itself.” Just kind of what to leave it there. I’m kind of wanting to leave it there for my own self, but I don’t want to fill in a bunch more words. This is what it is saying, and we have some things to examine and they're not gonna go away just because we ignore them. We can keep reading the Bible and ignore this until we come to James next November and it's still gonna be true, and we will have reaped what we sowed. We have to change the way that we are living our faith and make our speech and our action both be true of one another. I dream for that. I dream for that in myself, but I dream for that in the body of Christ. We would change the world if we were true. If our faith was actually in action, we would…we would change the world. And it's not as if we haven't been a part of many changes in the world over history, but the world really needs a witness right now. The world…the world really needs light in the darkness, salt as a preservative, a city on a hill that can't be hidden. And it seems so often, like we fellow believers, we’re just playing king of the mountain. We want to individually be a city on a hill or whatever and so we’ll push everybody else down so we can be on the top and then somebody will push us down and then we’ll just battle each other for who gets to be on top when it's like beside the point. And, so, I hope, especially after all that we've been through in the world over the last couple of years now, going on a couple of years with just the craziness that we’ve seen on display in ways that we’ve never really seen before and have endured things that have never been faced by anybody that's alive today. We’ve had to deal with some things and we need to stop warring with each other over who gets to be right and get about the business of saving the world as the body of Christ where all are necessary, everyone is irreplaceable, everyone has a role to play, everybody has a part in this story, the story of redemption. That's our story. It's our story to tell and if our words and deeds are in alignment, then we are being true and telling the truth.
Prayer:
Father, we invite You into that. We invite You into all that was spoken from the letter from James today. We’re sitting up and paying attention. We’re not zoning out or pretending that this doesn't apply to us in some way because it's directly speaking to us clearly and we know we need to repent, and we know we've got to make changes. And, so, Holy Spirit we can't do it without You. We have too much wounding, too much baggage, too much history, too much all kinds of pull to comply and fit into our culture. We have all kinds of things that pull us in all kinds of directions, and we are encouraged to be false. You are encouraging us that freedom is being true. So, Holy Spirit come. Help us catch ourselves, help us see the ways that we’re not being true. May our words and our deeds tell the truth, we pray. In the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

We have this brand-new…brand-new resource that I’m kinda giddy about. It took a long time, years, years in the making and it's this new book, book number five for me, a little different kind of book but really, really truly excited for it to find its way out into the world. It’s called Promised Land, photographs from the land of the Bible and it is a book of photography, it is a coffee-table edition. It is this beautiful 12 x 12 square book that's the right size for viewing and engaging with the photography from Israel from some of the key places where the Bible happened. And when we put this together, we really went for quality really to make the best quality edition, something that's excellent, something that's worshipful, something that's meaningful, something that will last and we have that. It’s beautiful. Promised Land, photographs from the land of the Bible is available now in the Daily Audio Bible Shop and you can get there on the web, at dailyaudiobible.com or in the app. And once you get into the Shop there's a bunch of categories of different resources. You'll find Promised Land, photographs from the land of the Bible in the lifestyle section or in the books and audiobooks section and you can take a peek at it there. So, check that out.
If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, if what we do together brings life and good news and hope and encouragement into your day and into your week and month and year, then thank you, humbly, profoundly, deeply for your partnership. Community Prayer and Praise:
Hey, my outstanding DAB fam this is Kingdom Seeker Daniel. Hey Beautiful Sunsets, I’m praying for your family for the restoration for the freedom for the peace and the reuniting that the Lord is at work in even now. And I agree with you and I'm standing with you for Isaiah 54:17 that that would be the umbrella that God would raise up over you that no weapon formed against you and your family will prosper but every lie that will come against you it shall be condemned in the Lord. That's your heritage. And, so, be encouraged to know that the Lord is fighting for you and your family. To my brother Terry the brother that's incarcerated. Man, I appreciate you for the shout out for the love man. Know that God is with you. He's with you in this struggle, He's with you in the fight, He's with you in the test. Whether it's testing or tempting God is with you. We know God, God doesn't tempt us. So, He's definitely in the test…in the testing process with you but you will win, you will overcome, and God is setting up reinforcements even now for you behind the walls my brother. So, know that He's protecting you, He's watching out for you. So, be encouraged man. Keep running. He's got you. And for Jenny, the sister from the Bay Area, sister I so appreciate you and your fight and you're pressing life and going after your masters and even for the class that you're going away for right now. I pray that God is watching over your 11 your 15-year-old and just appreciate you for your determination sis. And know that He is with you on this journey, and you shall overcome. To Holly from California, your 8-year-old grandson Jackson is struggling to get to know other kids and blend in. I pray God will come around him and give him the friends that he needs in Jesus’ name. Love you.
Hi, I'm calling on behalf of my mom Susan who is a faithful listener of the DAB. She has…she has many else problems one of them being diabetes and she's very sick with COVID right now. So, she's requesting prayer and she believes in the power of prayer and would be so encouraged to know that the DAB family is praying for her and interceding on her behalf. So, please pray for wisdom for us and peace for her and a full recovery. And we're just so thankful for this community and the support. Thank you.

Just keep going because it is taking you somewhere. And yeah, it's all working for our good. So...

Hello this is Max from Madison. I am a little behind as usual on Daily Audio Bible. Listened to November 5th today, the prayer requests and Elene ileen from I believe it was Colchester called in about her son Daniel and I just want to say a prayer for Daniel and for Elene and let you know that you are not alone. You have many brothers and sisters suffering the same. 1 Peter 5:7. And the best thing to do is know and let Daniel know that he's not alone. And if there is a support group, a youth support group in your area I would highly advise because that helped me a lot when I was his age. Also, I want to praise report. I've been working on for several years trying to help teens in my local neighborhood using the performing arts and I almost lost hope a year ago when I called in and it looked like it's going to happen. I’m partnering with the local school district, and it looks like we might have our first club meetings in June, and I'll actually be paid and have a job career doing what I love. And, so, just let Daniel know that he is loved. Lord Daniel is your child, he's in pain right now but let him know that You have him. You have in your embrace and give his mom Elene strength to deal with this in compassion and love. God bless you all. Bye.

100 Days of Writing: the List
Since it seems there is some interest, why not? List of works (nominally) in progress, old unfinished fics, and Stuff I Want To Write below the cut. Feel free to ask about any of these.
Works (nominally) In Progress
Fanfic
"Reason or Rhyme" (Time Princess - Gotham Memoirs). The Vittorio expansion/fix-fic, because I will be forever disgruntled at how little romance content was actually included in the Mafia romance route.
Galactic Date Night Shenanigans aka "The one where everything is Balkar's fault." (SWTOR - Theron Shan/Jedi Knight). Theron "disaster spy" Shan is goaded into trying to take his wife out for a nice date for once, and it goes like every other plan these two have ever had anything to do with.
#3: [I] trusted [you] (SWTOR - Theron Shan / Jedi Knight). A post-Nathema prompt fic I swear I will finish one of these days.
Original
super secret short story/novella project - Okay it's not that super secret, but it is something I'm mostly keeping under my hat for now as I work on it because of reasons, and is actually (inconveniently, for 100 Days of Writing purposes) the main thing I've been working on lately. I expect to be able to say more about it later. Maybe even within the 100 days! We'll see.
southern gothic urban fantasy procedural romance - Faerie Animal Control Warden meets FBI Elf during investigation of a suspicious death out in the kudzu. A little bit of Bright, a bit Mushi-Shi, a drop of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
Stuff I Want to Write
Distinct from works in progress in that I have not actually gotten past the planning stage on any of these - if that. A few of these have been rattling around in concept for long enough to have gone through several distinct evolutions without ever getting any writing done on them. Still, hope springs eternal and ideas are never wasted.
Fanfic
the rival bands AU / the rock opera playlist fic (Sailor Moon - Makoto Kino/Nephrite). Currently exists entirely as an incomplete playlist.
space opera Pride and Prejudice retelling - exactly what it sounds like on the tin. Do y'all know I have yet to encounter a futuristic/space AU? Surely there's one out there somewhere, but I have yet to see it. If you know of one, for the love of God don't tell me.
"Ten of Swords" - (Archer EMIYA/Minako Arisato). fate/stay night + Persona 3 Portable crossover what's even wrong with my brain.
Original
the Regency fae story - a Regency-era fantasy in which a lot of the needlessly complicated and restrictive social rules followed by the upper classes are actually an attempt at defending against the Fair Folk. Sort of Pride and Prejudice vs Changeling: the Lost vs Labyrinth. Could turn into a whole Pride and Prejudice retelling, I guess?
drinking games - fantasy imperial court intrigues involving a romance between a court poison taster and a master spy/assassin.
untitled - East/southeast Asian-inspired Beauty and the Beast retelling in which the Beast is a mountain god whose appearance is based on a tiger. I'm probably too white to write this.
untitled - Private investigator hired to investigate local bad-boy-made-good for insurance fraud, turns out it was actually an ill-advised teenage deal with the devil coming due. Might fit in with that other southern gothic urban fantasy idea, I am not sure.
the ciphered letter - This one started off as a combination of a Mage: the Awakening campaign and a really, really weird spam email I got one time. Orphan gets mysterious ciphered letter, meets snarky Welsh mage, awakens to magic and maybe almost gets made a human sacrifice to an eldritch abomination.
Forfeit - Regency/Victorian-esque fantasy involving reincarnation, a race of immortals, and a half-immortal teaming up with a mortal who sacrificed his future reincarnations for pseudo-immortality to uncover and stop the sinister secrets that power a colonizing empire. It makes more sense in my head... probably?
untitled - Slow burn enemies to lovers between the world-conquering emperor and the rebel leader who's opposing him, over the course of a time loop. AKA Lord of Heroes Kartis/Monarch with the serials filed off. Or I guess I could just write Lord of Heroes fanfic?
low fantasy Magnificent Seven Samurai - Farming village scrapes together a group of starving mercs to protect them from marauders, drama ensues. That's it, that's the whole idea.
Unfinished Fics
Distinct from works in progress in that these are all old enough I can no longer claim I intend to finish them. Some of them I may come back to, especially the few that had substantial progress made before they fell by the wayside. Most will probably be left abandoned, either because I have lost interest in continuing to work on them or I have just plain forgotten what I was planning to do with them.
dreameater - A very old, loosely Forgotten Realms-inspired concept involving an aging half-elf, his fully elven partner, and a mysterious magical threat that's devouring people's dreams.
"Fortune Favors the Brave" (Baccano! - Luck Gandor/Eve Genoard). The Luck/Eve shipping fic.
"Intermezzo" (Blood+ City of Nightwalkers). Follow-up fic to an obscure manga prequel/side story for the vampire anime Blood+, involving Hagi and the Hong Kong cop who semi-adopted him that one time.
"The Art of Losing Everything" (Dragon Age: Origins - Alistair Theirin/f!Cousland). An Alistair/f!Warden fic with themes of loss, duty, and sacrifice.
"In Pieces" (Dragon Age II - Fenris/f!Hawke). A terrible horrible no good very bad AU where Hawke actually turned Fenris over to Danarius and then came back to try to fix her mistake, which I can never finish because I can't make that initial decision make internal sense no matter how hard I try.
"Pas de Deux" (Final Fantasy VIII - Squall Leonhart/Rinoa Heartilly). Exploration of how Squall and Rinoa's relationship could develop after the events of the game.
"With Good Intentions" (Final Fantasy VIII - Squall Leonhart/Rinoa Heartilly). An AU in which Rinoa discovers that technically you can change the past, it's just that if Squall has an actual decent childhood the world ends. Way too ambitious for me to ever actually finish, probably, but I can't quite give up on the idea.
"I've Loved These Days" (Gundam SEED - Mu la Flaga/Murrue Ramius). One of several partly-written Gundam SEED fics kicking around in my files.
"The Last Night of the World" (Gundam SEED - Mu la Flaga/Murrue Ramius). Another Gundam SEED fic, one that began as a prompt in ye olde LiveJournal days. "I've Loved These Days" might have been a prototype, though they don't appear to have any text in common. Could in theory still get finished, maybe.
Valentine's ghosts (Gundam SEED Destiny - Andrew Waltfeld/Murrue Ramius). I'm just saying, Andy/Murrue would have been so much more interesting than the whole Neo thing in Destiny.
"Lion Passant" (Kingdom Hearts). Something something Leon as a failed Keyblade Bearer. The Kingdom Hearts franchise has rewritten its own lore at least three times since I originally had the idea, I can't imagine I'll ever continue it now.
"Vigil" (KotOR - Carth Onasi/f!Revan). Carth/Revan retrospective somewhere around the tomb of Naga Sadow on Korriban.
"Semper Fidelis" (KotOR/KotOR II - Carth Onasi/f!Revan). Post-Sith Lords Carth/Revan resolution fic.
"Clarity" (KotOR II). Atton Rand backstory study from the POV of that one nameless Jedi.
"A Simple Game of Cards" (KotOR II - Atton Rand/Jedi Exile). Spoilers: it is never a simple game of cards. Turns out someone already did it with more or less the same twist I had in mind.
the besieged base fic (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). A fic rendition of the "Besieged Base" mission from the first Mass Effect.
"Get Up, Jonah" (Mass Effect). I woke up thinking about Turkish drummers. Didn't take long; I don't know much about Turkish drummers. Virmire, before the other shoe drops.
"Long Night" (Mass Effect). Ashley on Virmire.
"My Heart Dances" (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). Liara POV of Shepard/Kaidan.
"No Way Out" (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). Heading up the Citadel during the ME1 endgame.
"Right Here, Right Now" (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). An ME1 epilogue / pre-ME2 sort of fic.
"While the Night is Still Young" (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). Shepard/Kaidan en route to Ilos.
Apparently I had approximately a million little Mass Effect shortfic ideas I never finished and in some cases never started. Apparently they're all for the first game. (I think there was a Thane idea or two for ME2 that I just never started on at all. RIP.)
"To Absent Friends" (Tiger and Bunny). Sad, sad futurefic of an elderly Pao-Lin reflecting on the deaths of all the other heroes over the years.
