A highlight from a long reblog:
There should be an Ao3 tag for "Canon-typical level of cosmological exceptions"
#I made it be a tag :)#example: you can't change between elf-men#except Tuor. and Luthien#you can't sail to Valinor as mortal#except Earendil and the hobbits and finally Gimli in a random not-hallowed ship with his Silvan bff#the exceptions get crazier and crazier#I mean they must but anyway#it is hilarious#Pengolodh: no mortal can sail to Valinor except one and that was A BiG Deal#Gimli: yea ok whatever (with all due respect but anyway)#I need a Pengolodh-Gimli dialog on that#you can't this you can't that#don't get me wrong#there are 2 ways of breaking the rules#I don't recommend the Ar-Pharazon approach#but still with the correct vibe you can make a lot of things work#mostly I mean here as a writer#but as a blorbo it is sometimes a good guideline: estel+correct vibe + try hard and do not care too much about hard magic it's not hard mag#it has baked-in way to make exceptions#which is absolutely awesome BTW#I love this so much#so yea canon-typical level of exceptions#as opposed to “hard magic Silm: sad and stiff as a stick”#and as opposed to crack#and as opposed to “a level of exceptions that can be argued as canon-compliant but I don't have the writing skills for it”#some of you have#too many tags#silm crack#silm#silm fandom
