Round 1, Side B: Undertale (2015) vs Hollow Knight (2017)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Undertale | Hollow Knight
Campaigns under the cut!
Campaign for Undertale:
i don't know what i can even say about the undertale soundtrack except that Toby Fox's mastery of mood and leitmotif is just masterful, and as good as it is on its own it feels absolutely mindblowing in-context.
Look there’s a REASON why “megalovania” became a meme and it’s because it genuinely is that good, and it’s not even the best track in the game!!! There have been multiple cases of professional musicians blind reacting to the soundtrack and A: loving it and B: managing to accurately predict the events happening while a given track plays in-game based purely on the leitmotifs and composition techniques used. Sooo many video essayists and such use undertale music in the background of their videos, and not even the big well known tracks but the calmer more incidental music, because it’s just so good. The soundtrack is good enough to justify a whole orchestral concert of just music from this game. My personal favourites are the title track “Undertale”, “Hopes and Dreams”, and “Waterfall” and even narrowing it down to just those three just now took me ages because every track is a banger
it's undertale
TBH Undertale isn't the music that has changed my brain the most but it is the one where all the discourse is so old it is now stupid. Anyway. Sans Undertale website. Psionic warriors vote for the funny bone man and his funny bone music.
It's got so many good songs. Fallen Down is my personal favorite but it's got amazing boss music and I have to mention Megalovania. A lot of it is composed with the same notes just in different patterns. Which, I know that's whay music is but I can't explain it better. all the music fits together well.
Campaign for Hollow Knight:
every song is specifically made to fit with the area/boss it plays for. Crystal Peak includes "shimmery" noises to evoke the image of crystals, Soul Sanctum has a haunted sort of feel to it, Nosk feels like skittering and it's very quick- anxiety-inducing if you will. it has an uncanny feel to it, which helps with Nosk's role as a mimic luring you in as prey. Sealed Vessel is very emotional, high-energy but resigned and tragic. as the Hollow Knight weakens, its song does as well and it directly leads into the Radiance's theme. point being that all the songs have a purpose and very well designed for said purpose
Hollow Knight has an incredibly atmospheric soundtrack. It's got great area themes that just feel exactly like what they're trying to represent, and its boss themes, especially, are phenomenal - which is important for a game with so many bosses, as it works well to distinguish them and make them memorable. It's also important for a game where you'll be fighting said bosses over and over again lmao

How did you enjoy Undertale Yellow's pacifist route? Have a favorite song/character so far? (also did you see my comment on the youtube channel that the annoying dog in the steamworks was a Fun Event lol-)
I'm also assuming you're planning on doing Neutral and Genocide at some point.
I enjoyed it a lot!! The spritework was excellent, I loved the little QOL improvements in various places (like being able to run), the characters were all so charming...so glad I played through it all! And yes, I did notice about getting a fun event with annoying dog in Steamworks! (Speaking of, Meltdown's one of my favorite songs...also gotta love Starlo and Axis's battle themes!)
I am planning to do a neutral run in the future (but not until after my surgery), but I don't really do geno runs. I've never done them for UT or DR, so not gonna do that here. Especially considering the boss battle difficulty, I'd hit that wall pretty hard and not get through it! I did look up the geno run on YouTube, and DANG how all that ended!! I have to draw certain characters because I love the design but man that last scene just suckerpunched me!

Thoughts about Undertale Yellow
Greetings, I just returned from binging through Undertale Yellow, True Pacifist Route specifically, and am seeking a place to let out some thoughts (and steam). It's the first time I'm doing this type of "review" on my blog, but since my thoughts on it are quite strong, I thought, "hey, why the heck not"? Spoilers for the game and its ending ahead, fellas. Buckle up.
First off, let me begin by stating that, for the most part, I had a blast playing through it. The music is amazing, the boss themes real bangers, the environmental ones great as well. My favorite track was the OST that played in the Dunes: a really catchy western vibe with Flowey's theme in it as well, an earworm that filled me with Determination while running through the sandy fields. Then we have a beautiful pixel art style, gorgeous sceneries, great gameplay with challenging and fun boss fights (side note: although I couldn't fully appreciate Ceroba's fight since it had a couple pretty much unavoidable attacks. Or is it just skill issue on my part? Anyway, that part annoyed me more than it should have. Moving on, lmao.)
Furthermore, the game also has charming characters! They are the ones that kept me going and really ignited my interest. Not gonna lie, it took me until the town in the Dunes to become really invested in the game. Martlet is charming and cute, sure, but North Star and his gang, no, that guy specifically sold it for me. Charismatic, funny, very expressive sprites (well, all facial sprites are quite colorful, but it took me until North Star to appreciate/notice just how many there are for each character) and an interesting internal conflict with wanting to entertain others so they forget about the pain of being stuck underground, but at the same time being so absorbed in his persona that he temporarily acts like a douche towards his pals and forgets who he truly is. He also features my favorite joke in the game when he proudly proposes to the salesman that "he wants to buy a gun for the child". Freaking hilarious, love him, huehehue.
Story-wise, I was pleasantly surprised and taken aback by the dark twists of Ceroba and her husband Chujin. And I appreciated how the flashbacks got intigrated within her final boss fight. I don't know about you, but my biggest motivation to play RPGs are not just the gameplay, it's mainly the characters and the story. If the gameplay is amazing but the characters/plot boring, then I lose interest quickly. To me, the real rewards of a tough battle are story progression and seeing just what the characters will do next. Therefore, I greatly enjoyed the breaks between Ceroba's phases in which we saw parts of her backstory. They even made me cry!
...Although, to be honest, I don't exactly understand why we had that insight into her mind in the first place. Why did we survive so many hits to the point of 0.00001 HP? Where's that coming from all of a sudden? Why did time stop at some point like Za Warudo? Maybe that random plot armor (that happened the first time and never again) is explained in another route, but anyway, moving on-
This review-style blog entry only exists because of the True Pacifist ending. I'll be blunt, I hate it. Why?
So it ends with Clover sacrificing their soul for the monsters so they can eventually break free. Which is fine on its own. Clover is for the most part a blank slate of a character, only driven by their desire to seek the lost humans, that's basically it. Maybe it would have made a bit more sense for Clover to see an actual physical proof of their demise before they give up on them completely, but eh. I'm also wondering whether they are really okay with potentially another, possibly innocent human falling down sometime in the future only to get killed by the monsters. But oh well.
(You know, now that I think about it, I actually am a bit salty about Clover's decision to sacrifice themselves, lmao. Would've been kinda cool if it was up to the player, have another ending split.)
Anyways, the issue I'm having is how our cast of supporting characters, Martlet, North Star aka Starlo and Ceroba react to Clover's decision. They are shocked first, but... agree surprisingly quickly?? What?? Excuse me, the entire hassle we went through to get to this point was to stop Ceroba from taking Clover's soul. Now with Clover volunteering to sacrifice themselves, the gang is cool with it??
Of course they don't agree immediately, but are easily swayed within a few arguments back and forth. Man, what friends you are, guys. The reason I'm having this pet peeve in the first place is because we as the human, who has known these guys for just a day, did a lot for them, alright? They all tried to kill us at one point, but we took the beating, the hard battles, forgave them and were there for them during their internal conflicts. We were a pretty decent friend, if I may say so.
Especially with Ceroba! We did a lot to change her mind and path of self-destruction! Yet our so-called friends don't put in the same amount of effort when it comes to convincing us otherwise- or heck, use force if you must- get Clover away from there, lmao. Wouldn't it have been an interesting act of redemption on Ceroba's part, by the way, if she tried to stop us? Being touched by our mercy and refusal to give up on her, she does the same for us?
I suppose the reason I am so baffled by all this is because of Clover being a blank slate, the player character really felt like me, like I was going through the journey and not like I was controlling another character. It felt like my decision to spare them all, to talk to them and wanting to get to know them better. So the group of characters I have really grown to like giving up on me within about a minute of back-and-forth just felt... wow. Thanks, guys.
If I compare it to Undertale's True Pacifist in which every important supporting character gathers up after the confrontation with Asgore, all agreeing with the decision of me, the player, staying in the Underground with them, then oh boy, it really stings. Just would've been a cool, wholesome sign of friendship if Martlet, Starlo and Ceroba decided that "nah, even for the surface, we won't give up on Clover". By the way, in this game, we don't even really get to see why the monsters want to return to the surface so badly. They keep saying they want to, but what are the reasons exactly? More freedom, I suppose. Yet by expanding the Underground with the Dunes, the Mines, the Factory, and some of Snowdin, the Ruins and New Home, their habitat seemed so much larger than in the OG game- What I wanna say is, their desperation should've been shown way more instead of told, so the player can understand the monsters' aspiration better.
The thing is, it's a shockingly easy issue to fix if you really want "the canon ending" with Clover ending up dead and their soul taken: have Clover still have their moment of doubt and realization, remembering what the monsters told them throughout their journey. Then they go to Asgore with their gang, hoping to convince him. It doesn't work out, so Asgore starts a fight. During the battle, Clover realizes it's useless to fight back, it's better to have their soul taken for the monsters, so they allow Asgore to kill them. Their friends are not powerful enough to stop him. There ya have it.
Siiiiigh. Is it just me, being annoyed by that ending? As a whole, the finale felt a little... rushed? Was New Home always meant to be so empty? Is it to build up atmosphere? Yet there were two silly NPCs in the first screen of New Home, making me assume that maybe, there was another plan originally? (If it has been stated in a devlog or any other comment by the creators, then I apologize, I haven't read those fully.)
Anyways, if I didn't care about the game, this rant wouldn't even exist in the first place. I was really invested in the game until the ending just left me... kinda sad, not gonna lie. It will take me a while to process it all.
If you got this far, then thanks for reading. Am I the only one feeling this miffed about the ending? I might go back and edit this post if I find out there are things to be corrected. Buuuut as of now, happy holidays!

currently 2am and i can't tell if i'm having one of those delirious late night old hyperfixation comebacks that go away when i finally succumb to sleep or if it really is coming back full force and knocking me over like a 13ft high ocean wave. said hyperfixation is undertale.
anyways, my dear favorite sans enjoyer (you) immediately came to mind. name everything you love about this skeleton man GO
Tumblr media
BEE. OUUGHGHGH BEE YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOUVE JUST UNLEASHED. EVERYPNE SHUT UP I GOTTA TALK ABOUT MY BOY
god bro i literally cannot express how much i love sans the skeleton. like really and genuinely in every which way he is my Favorite Fucking Guy. ages ago my friends and i had a simp-based slideshow night where we made presentations about our biggest fictional crushes/hyperfixations and i made mine into a tier list bc i love putting things into arbitrary categories and the last tier was "category F: the final frontier (I’m pretty sure I’m going to be on my actual fucking deathbed before I get over these fuckers)” and guess who was #1 on the list babyyyy
Tumblr media
but besides all the silly sentimental reasons why i like him so much, i just. genuinely he's such a good fuckin character. UT is a game with a fucking MEGALOAD of excellent characters designed in a lab to steal ur heart and sans is no exception. his introduction is so god damn good in terms of characterization. when you (frisk) first enter the underground proper, the only other character (besides flowey/napstablook technically) you've gotten to know at that point is toriel, and you just finished battling her specifically because she was trying to stop you from going through the door. you don't know anything about this new area except what toriel has told you/implied, that it's dangerous and full of monsters who are not your friends, who will try to kill you without a second thought. as you the player step into the snow, the background music is silent, there isn't any sort of comfort from the knowledge that you are now stuck in this new place without toriel's protection/guidance (not to mention your encounter with flowey and the fact that you can't get back into the ruins). the only thing you (frisk) can do is go forward, so you do. you start walking. it's quiet. it's cold. you're alone. and then you start to hear footsteps. you pass a stick on the ground, and the second it's out of view of you (the player), you hear someone (something?) step on it and break it. if you go back to look, no one's there. you're about to reach a small bridge when there's more footsteps, and suddenly you can't move, which is an absolutely terrible thing to happen when you're playing a video game. the footsteps get closer. a voice speaks, slow and purposeful. "human. don't you know how to greet a new pal? turn around, and shake my hand." you don't really have a choice. you turn, you take the figure's hand– and then there's a fucking FART NOISE and instantly the tension is completely fucking broken. it's like a dark cloud is lifted off of you. the music comes back in (sans' theme, bouncy and silly and perfect for him) and you see sans fully for the first time and he's this round dorky little funnyman with the biggest grin of all time and he switches up instantly, becoming a comedic relief character after essentially faking you out as your first “boss battle”. doing this is so freaking smart because it is a perfect showcase of sans as a character, not just hinting at his real level of power while also showing that he is at his core just a funnyman, but also exemplifying his primary strategy when it comes to avoiding conflict. he purposefully scares you, and then lifts the tension by revealing he's not here to hurt you, and that sense of relief makes you instantly trust him a little more. he starts his true introduction off with a joke, not just lowering your guard and making you underestimate him a little but also making you like him more and feel more at ease. not to mention it's the exact opposite of flowey's intro which is just such a cool additional thing. it's so good. it's sooo good.
and that's not even touching his relationship w papyrus, his connection to toriel and alphys, the fact that if you reset after defeating him in the genocide run, he could literally kill you the moment he meets you again (and he'd have every understandable reason to do so) but he chooses not to because at his core he WANTS to give you a chance, he wants to believe that even the worst person can change. not only that but in the genocide run he watches you kill his brother, the most important person in his life, and he STILL doesn't take action because he's holding out hope that you'll make the decision to stop on your own. it's only when you reach the judgment hall and you've killed almost every single other character that he finally decides to fight you himself because he's essentially accepted that you're not going to stop unless he stops you, and even then he knows he can't stop you! he only has 1 god damn hit point!! so he hits you with his biggest move right at the start, hoping that'll kick the wind out of you and make you stop trying to get past him, and then when that doesn't work, he dodges and dodges and dodges until he is literally falling asleep on his feet from pure exhaustion, until he's been fighting so long he physically cannot keep going. like it's framed as him going to sleep but let's be real, it's him passing out from fucking dodging and throwing everything but the kitchen sink at you for fucking ages, and his final resort is stalling you, but eventually his exhaustion catches up to him and you get the opportunity to attack him again. but even then he dodges your first attack, probably out of adrenaline, only to run right into your second because he's so fucking tired, he can't keep doing this, he's so tired.
like dude, i know, i kNOW he is funny haha skeleton but he is also genuinely such a good fucking character. he is silly and goofy but also so, so heartbreaking, lazy and yet so so smart, a silly little guy who loves his brother and who didn't ask to be so aware of the resets but he is and because he is he takes it upon himself to become the judge, to watch over you and if necessary make sure you don't take a step outside that hall. he's my fucking favorite dude. i could go on but this is already way way way too long. tl:dr i love him <3

Talking about my choices and template under the cut!
Favorite Game of All Time: Undertale
Probably will stay my GOAT forever unless Deltarune manages to stick it's landing with the many cool extensions to undertale's themes and lore it brings up. Part of my love for it is based on how little games cared to explore the themes it brought up before undertale came out.
Favorite Series: Super Monkey Ball series
No other games have really managed to capture what this series had, though Rolled Out might by the time it's finally released. Lots of nostalgia baked into this choice- I used to do stunts as a teenager back in the day and learn the tech from forums.
Best Soundtrack: Terraria's Calamity Mod
Yes, I'm counting a mod as both a separate game and enough of one to have the best soundtrack. I already loved DM DOKURO's undertale remixes, and they just knock it out of the park with the Calamity mod. I will never not scream THE ENEMY HAS ASCENDED BEYOND YOUR CONTROL but Devourer of Gods is also something truly special.
Favorite Protagonist: Zagreus from Hades
I'm not usually super into the protagonists of games as I usually am with the supporting cast, but Zagreus really makes the story of Hades and his commentary brings the game to life so, so much. Other contender of this spot was probably the Voice of the Hero from Slay the Princess, but hard to say if they are really the protagonist, and also, I like Voice of the Contrarian even more.
Favorite Villain: The Masked Man from Mother 3
-endless crying-
Best Story: Mother 3
Listen, Undertale may be my GOAT but Mother 3 is my number 2 because of how good the story is. Please go watch Super Eyepatch Wolf's video on it if you haven't. The incredible themes, the knife-twisting tragedies, the goofy humor covering up extremely dark subject matter, all of it is so, so, so, good.
Have not played but want to: Alan Wake 2
This game seems so much My Shit™ but sadly it is only on epic games store which I hate. I've heard so many wonderful things about the game and all the visuals in those reviews look amazing and seem like it really is the peak of modern survival horror. Can't wait for it to come to Steam/GoG.
Everyone hates but you love: Continue?9876543210
'Everyone' is quite an overstatement for such a weird, niche game but it is the only game I really like that also has a non positive rating on steam. I've always loved the weird themes and existentialism tinged with hope that this game offers, despite everything from its mechanics to the story being vague and near impossible to parse.
You hate but everyone loves: Into The Breach
Nuclear Throne/Enter the Gungeon could also go here. All are roguelikes which are incredibly loved in the community that I just can't stand. I don't even particularly know why I don't like them, just something about the feel of the mechanics don't agree with me.
Best Artstyle: Splatoon series, but specifically Octo Expansion (until Side Order inevitably beats this)
Splatoon has always been a series marked by it's incredible visual design. Everything screams 90s, the color choices are vivid and striking, the character models are super expressive, etc. Octo Expansion adds even more with the retropunk aesthetic and dark environments mixed with the neon greens and blues.
Favorite Ending: Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations
The entire last case of this game is perfect. The ending montage where you get to see where all the characters are going is sweet and ties a great bow on the series, and the final picture with the vase gets me every time. This was another game that was a contender for best story.
Favorite Boss Fight: Undyne the Undying from Undertale
'Not Sans???' listen Sans is probably the better design but Undyne the Undying was my literal first true boss I ever fought in Undertale, and it will always stick with me. I love the rhythm game style of her mechanics and her intro into her music sets the tone perfectly for the genocide run.
Childhood Game: Ball Revamped 2: Metaphasik
Catz is also a contender here since that is even older and I also played that quite a lot as a kid, but Ball Revamped 2 and a lot of jmtb02's other flash games were really when I started to heavily get into video games. I still sometimes go back to this one, the design still holds up quite well, and the rest of the series ain't bad either.
Relaxing Game: Vampire Survivors
I don't generally play 'relaxing' games, I like my games hard and fast and brutal. But vampire survivors build crafting is incredibly relaxing and when you make a successful build being able to just sit back and let the game play itself to win is such a dopamine rush.
Stressful Game: Cook, Serve, Delicious 3
Honestly, most of the games I play could go here. CSD series however is a special type of stress that puts me on edge through the whole level, enough that I often can't do more than a 3 or so in a play session (lovingly). A rhythm game without music, there is no other game series that demands the level of intense focus and execution like this does.
Game you can always come back to: Fallout: New Vegas
I've come back to this game at least 10 separate times with new characters. A combination of incredibly relaxing due to the easy combat system and replayability given the role playing system mean it's an easy game to just jump back into even after a long time away.
Guilty Pleasure: Project Sekai: Colorful Stage
I play a lot of gacha games and most if not all could fit here given how terrible those games are with the players, but Project Sekai is one where I will actively gush about it as I think it's story and characters are legitimately great. Magia Record could also fit here if it the NA servers weren't shut down.
Tons of Hours Played: Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
Not my most played game technically (Terraria and Tabletop Simulator beat it) but both of those don't count as many of Terraria's hours are idle due to holding a server up, and Tabletop Simulator due to waiting and also it's not exactly a game in it's own right. I've so far put 750 hours into Rebirth, and still only have 545 of the 637 achievements. No other game has ever captured BoI's way of insane item combinations that make each run a discovery fest.
And here's the template!

Toriel: 10/10 I like how she's actually holding yourself back from killing you except you can still die from her
(sorry but I'm too sad because there's no hug option for blooky)
Papyrus: 10/10(this means they're easy by the way) holds himself back from killing you also by the way did you know if you moved to him enough time he won't fight you?
Undyne: 7/10: when I first played undertale I died to her so many times but now I just like the fact your soul is green no my favorite color is in green but my favorite second one
Mettaton:10/10: if you know what you're doing during the quiz section you probably won't get hit (I'm not doing the one after the maze because let's be fair it's not even a fight)
Muffet: 5/10:... I got pastor on my first try you see I purposely got rid of the spider donut because back then I had no idea how to get past muffet... And yet here I am surviving easily what the heck was wrong with my past self
The king of the underground: (autocorrect it won't let me do his proper name) 6/10 not going to lie his theme is banger but sad we have an easy boss to get past if you know what you're doing
Omega flowey:3/10: all you have to do is Dodge trust me that's basically the only thing that will keep you alive here
Asriel dreemurr: 10/10 you can't even die here(still good fight though)
Undyne the undying: 1/10: the amount of times I died on her Jesus Christ
Mettaton neo: 10/10 I feel bad for him he didn't even get a proper fight D:
Sans:0/10 don't let his stats fool you only God can save you now
Ngl these are spot on LMFAOOO
I actually killed myself a lot on toriel thinking there's an "ending"
I was new 😔

Hey y'all, just got back from watching the rest of manlybadasshero's omori lets play and i thought i'd share some of my thoughts about the game! (NEEDLESS TO SAY, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!)
So let's get one SUPER ULTRA MEGA BIG thing out of the way first, i would've 100% enjoyed my experience a lot more if i wasn't such a huge scatterbrain and spoiled the big twist at the end for myself. Though in my defense i kinda wasn't expecting the game to get so popular so quick when it first came out, i first heard of the game through manly and i thought it was just another obscure indie game like what he always plays. Aside from that though....I LOVED IT!!!!! It tugged at my heartstrings with it's accurate portrayal of mental illness and the heartwarming moments between sunny and his friends, it really reminded me of my own childhood in a lot of ways. I've found myself relating to all the characters in some sort of way, especially aubrey. Idk....just the way she lashed out on others throughout the game really spoke to me in a weird way......either that or it's just because i like rebellious characters in general (the fact that she has a pet bunny is a plus for me, i love bunnies!)
Ngl, i don't cry to video games often....i'm pretty sure the only games i've ever cried to are undertale and pokemon sword but even then, i was crying about pokemon sword because i was proud of myself for completing the game....and honestly, i'm glad omori is one of those games that make me emotional like that...even if i already knew sunny killed mari, even if i already knew basil killed himself in one of the endings. Though that could also be because my dog wouldn't shut the fuck up while i was watching the last few episodes and i was just stressed out about that
If i had to pick: i feel like i prefer headspace over real world, i was an undertale kid back in the day so i love me some quirky characters and fun worlds! Though tbh i feel like omocat WANTED her players to like headspace more since she explicitly said at one point that she specifically wanted to make omori a game so that people would be able to FEEL what sunny was feeling (that's the best way i can explain it i guess) that being said; i'd say my favorite characters are aubrey, spaceboy and recyclepath. I've already said what i've wanted to say about aubrey earlier but aside from that, i think she's really cool and VERY me-core! Same goes for spaceboy, i'm a huge sucker for bright colors and space-themed characters. Not to mention recyclepath is a really unique character, i've never seen a character based ENTIRELY on recycling before! Plus his coat and glasses remind me a LOT of oliver tree and i mean....hey, i like songs like alien boy and life goes on lmao
Ngl while i DID get the endings spoiled for me, there was still a lot of stuff that was a HUGE surprise for me! Like BRO I HAD NO IDEA KEL AND HERO HAD A BABY SISTER!!!! I mean....i DO vaguely remember someone mention sally in a youtube comment section but i had no idea what they were talking about and i was kinda just confused (iirc i may have even thought that kel and hero having a sister was just a weird dream i had) but i mean hey....as the youngest sister of 3 siblings who was born when my mom was in her 40's myself, i appreciate the representation! /hj
I actually first got into omori because a good friend of mine was into it, it started when he changed his pfp on discord to basil and we had a really short conversation about the game afterwards. A while later i saw an omori edit in my youtube rec and i thought "oh yay it's that game my friend likes! Let's watch it!" And the rest, as they say, is history! Dunno why the fuck it took me a whole ass year to finish the damn playthrough though
Speaking of which, i DEFINITELY wish that manly showed the hikkikomori route bosses in his playthrough. Seeing thoses cutscenes of the slime girls creating roboheart, mutantheart and perfectheart REALLY got me pumped to see the boss fights! Oh well....
All in all, omori is a SPECTACULAR game and i'm glad i decided to check it out! 9/10!

LISTEN alright shut up and listen cause i am thinking about skeletons and specifically skeletons and MUSIC and SOUND alright. in undertale and deltarune. imagine i am leaning against a cork board covered in pins and red string and papers with frazzled hair and rolled up sleeves cause there is SO MUCH here that might not mean anything but I DON'T KNOW.
okay. so. you've all seen that post, right? that one post that points out that bonetrousle is the background music of every single undertale trailer ever, and yet papyrus is the only major undertale character not to appear in deltarune yet? yeah, that's fucking weird! but listen close! isn't it ALSO weird that papyrus only has two themes and they're basically the exact same thing as each other? like so similar especially to begin with? and sans has four different themes! twice that! and sure they're mostly all the same melody but they're all audibly distinct from each other! and then he has one theme, megalovania, that has no trace of any leitmotif in it! i KNOW megalovania was originally written for homestuck or toby's earthbound hack or whatever but isn't it weird that it wasn't even modified at all to include even one familiar tune in it? maybe it's to symbolize that this sans you're fighting is no longer himself, because fighting is not something he would do naturally, he's only doing it now after the world has fallen apart! i dunno! it's weird!
and THEN you have the fact that sans' theme is the only undertale song that's also on the deltarune soundtrack. AND the fact that song that might play when you fight sans is the only song that's on the ut ost, but never actually plays in the game! like did we ever figure out what that song's whole deal was?? i don't think so!!
there are so many dots i am force-connecting here. the way that gaster is most often associated with sound and music and audio. mus.smile. garbage noise on the phone. his natural speech is not in normal text that can be read. the secret bosses, characters corrupted by him, are the only characters in the game with actual voice lines. and then the KICKER: the way his theme is weird like sans and papyrus' cause it's so simple, it's just a four-note arpeggio that is so often used as a bassline for so many songs such that you often cannot tell whether or not it means anything. he's everywhere. fitting for a man who was shattered across space and time!
and all this to say. the skeletons' themes are all pretty fucking weird in their own ways. one of sans' is on the ost but not in the game, papyrus has two that are basically the exact same and one is the bgm of all the ut trailers when he himself is noticeably absent from dr, gaster's theme is everywhere AND nowhere, hidden in a secret room inaccessible except through file editing. i could go on and on. sans apparently plays the trombone. papyrus hears the "strange whisper" of the echo flowers over the phone. all of gaster's musical themes- another him, darkness falls, gaster's theme, man- are on piano (kris also plays the piano). we could play the piano in undertale but not in deltarune. welcome to the sound test room! listen to all your favorite tunes. it was nothing but garbage noise. the skeletons speak in odd fonts. the roaring is the name for the apocalypse in this game. hell's roar bubbles from the depths. the knight, the roaring knight. susie does not listen. kris cannot be heard. we got an actual song with lyrics in deltarune. thinking. thinking.

barring the no mercy route being an influence in this case, how would you describe chara's personality? I cannot describe them well at all despite them being my favorite character. they're too complex lol. all of the meta i can find at this time as them described at both extremes of innocent & evil but i don't think that's accurate
TW: discussions of canon dark topics such as abuse , death and suicide
i love talking about chara, i've talked about them at length before lmao. thank u for giving me a chance to talk about my beloved child.
you can actually read a character exploration i'm doing in a mini-arc for Askfallenroyalty. actually, if you want one condensed post, this comic sums up chara's motives
My interpretation:
chara is an abused kid and suicidal kid*(1) who ran to mount ebott to die.*(2) upon learning that monsters are made of love and humans aren't*(3), chara began to hate humanity. the deltarune prophecy*(4) makes them to be The Angel despite being a human. Feeling undeserving of this title and obligated to fulfill it, Chara wanted to be a good kid more than anything.
But then the buttercup pie incident happened. They've accidentally*(5) poisoned asgore and came up with a plan to ensure the prophecy could be fulfilled and take a hit against humanity. Two birds with one stone -who cares if it's also a personal win too? then obviously the plan goes up in flames and they and asriel are murdered. then asgore wants to kill of all humanity.
your influence*(6) gets Chara onto a path of redemption or a path of destruction, mirroring the deltarune prophecy's two main interpretations.*(7)
in summery: chara is a scared kid trying to fit into a world that demands violence by the past actions of the previous generations. The war massacred monsters and locked them up with a kill-solution -ensuring that further violence would be needed to be free, thus continuing the cycle of violence.
chara is just a kid. they knit, they make macaroni art, they loved their family and had a best friend forever.* (8) but they're also vengeful, they cared so deeply for monsterkind they were ready to die and had no idea they'd be awake as a soul, they were prepared for death. they're complicated, you can't have one side without the other. while i’ve never wanted to murder anyone, i can still relate deeply to chara and see myself in them a lot. the tragedy of them -the fact they never really got a “happy ending” like everyone else just haunts me and it’s why I spend so much time making AFR. I just... love this character so much, i want this kid to be happy. (not that it could ever be easy to get there, happy endings aren’t free.)
And frankly, seeing this hurt kid get demonized just rubs me the wrong way, and it feels completely against the morals Undertale tries to tell with it’s story. I see it as a cautionary tale against violence and dehumanizing others for the sake of hate and violence. how kids can be influenced by the violence -or kindness around them. you don’t need to forgive the ones who hurt you, but killing them is not always the solution -though sometimes necessary as framed in the Undyne the Undying fight.
People get both Undertale’s themes and chara wrong the most, and for the game that’s meant the world to me it bothers me more than it should lol. It’s a Good Story, and I don’t mean to frame my interpretation of the character or themes as 100% canon and I know Mr.Fox’s brain to confirm it kinda deal, but with all the time I’ve spent analyzing and thinking it over I do think it’s not off in the general direction of it lol. And besides the author’s intent isn’t really the end-all-to-be-all. It’s what you get out of the story and the themes that matter and stick with you. No one can take that away from you.
Sources and evidence:
"* If you're cuter, monsters won't hit you as hard." -faded ribbion flavor text * "The ends of the tools have been filed down to make them safer." -gardening tools in New Home (and iirc Toriel's home as well, too lazy to double check rn) * Where are the knives. -no mercy chara (this and paired with the previous imply there are no sharp objects in reach of chara's home because chara can't be trusted with sharp objects out of self harm. This doesn't necessarily mean abuse but paired with them hating humanity so deeply, being suicidal and a child it paints a picture of abuse.
"* I know why (chara) climbed the mountain.* It wasn't for a very happy reason." -asriel post pacifist epilogue dialogue
"* Love, hope, compassion... * This is what people say monster SOULs are made of. * But the absolute nature of "SOUL" is unknown. * After all, humans have proven their SOULs don't need these things to exist." -Library book on monster souls)
* Legend has it, an 'angel' who has seen the surface will descend from above and bring us freedom. - gerson
"* It takes at least a human soul... * And a monster soul. * ...* If you want to go home... * You'll have to take his soul. * You'll have to kill ASGORE." -Alphys. Because boss monster souls are the exception and can persist after death for a short period of time, Chara could of killed any of the family members to escape the underground. this implies escaping wasn't the goal -it was to die (considering they already attempted suicide to fall underground the first time, this is explicitly suicide.) the plaque doesn't mention or speak like monster/human fusion's consumed soul would be aware. chara had no way of knowing they'd be awake. also the whole thing with the pie is a prank. cups of butter. -> buttercups. putting flowers in a pie is a joke to do, we see Chara is similar to Toriel (they mimic her speech in the no mercy monologue, they say “greetings” as she does like how Asriel says “howdy” like Flowey does. Chara makes puns and jokes in the flavor text all the time.
https://imgur.com/a/zP18P -dog food bag at different LV. "When the protagonist first encounters Mad Dummy, they are given the option to beat it up. Choosing to beat it up prompts one of three responses depending on the protagonist's LOVE." (source: undertale wiki)
If the protagonist’s LV is 1, the response becomes "(You tap the dummy with your fist.) (You feel bad.)"
If the protagonist's LV is between 2 and 4, the response becomes "(You hit the dummy lightly.) (You don't feel like you learned anything.)"
If the protagonist’s LV is between 5 and 7, the response becomes "(You sock the dummy.) (Who cares?)"
If the protagonist’s LV is 8 or higher, the response becomes "(You punch the dummy at full force.) (Feels good.)"" This implies Chara (who is the narrator) will feel different about the dog food -which references the classic phrase of "glass half empty/full" showing your out look in life. Then hitting the dummy show's Frisk's out look on violence depending on LV. Note that by the end of it, it's no longer "you feel..." but "feels good" This is Chara.
      7. “* Lately, the people have been  taking a bleaker outlook...* Callin' that winged circle the  'Angel of Death.' “ -gerson “* Only the fearless may proceed. * Brave ones, foolish ones. * Both walk not the middle road. “ -the first plaque in the first puzzle room with Toriel. The idea is to walk on both the left and right sides -you can’t go half way in the middle. this mirrors the “true” endings are only accomplished if you stick to no mercy or pacifist only.
     8. literally their home in New Home is a treasure trove of pre-game chara characterization.

hey everyone, welcome to our stim blog! 💖 this blog is run by starlight and ali. likes and follows will be either from ali’s main, or my main @riddlerosehearts. please try to read this post before following or requesting!
also, please note that when requests are open, we prefer/have an easier time with requests for media the mods are familiar with or non-media related things! we have a list of media below the cut and if something isn't mentioned there, you could also check my main or my anime blog (@ritsukageyamas) to see if i've posted about it--or just feel free to ask anyway and i'll see if one of us can do it, but be aware we might not be able to.
please DNI with this blog if you fit any of the following:
- blogs dedicated to dd*lg, k*nk, n/sfw, etc stuff
- (no)maps, racists, homophobes, and people who support trump or autism speaks
- pro-shippers
- terfs/truscum
also, please do not use our gifs without linking back to the post on our blog! the posts contain links to the sources we originally giffed the videos from and it’s just incredibly rude not to give credit!
we can do requests for specific kinds of gifs (for example, maybe you wanna see gifs of your favorite ride at disney world, or more gifs of lolita fashion or persian cats, things like that), specific videos if you send a link, or stimboards! under the cut are some guidelines for requests:
- if you want to send multiple requests, please send them in multiple separate asks so it’s easier for us to keep up with!
- it would be very helpful if you included certain stims/themes/colors etc you want included in your board, especially if we aren't familiar with the media being requested! if you don’t specify anything we’ll just do whatever we think fits best for your request, and sometimes that might mean we get the aesthetic/vibes wrong! however you can always let us know if you want us to change anything in your board.
- if requesting a character please specify the source name!! we don't know every media out there, after all!
- an incomplete list of things i’m really familiar with and would be happy to make boards for are:
kingdom hearts
twisted wonderland
basically anything disney/pixar
just to be clear the above includes pretty much any disney/pixar animated film like frozen, encanto, winnie the pooh, toy story, finding nemo... i’ve basically seen them all more than once because disney is my biggest special interest lol
it also includes some disney tv shows like tangled the series, ducktales, and the owl house!
a3! act addict actors
percy jackson (& rick riordan’s other series)
fullmetal alchemist
fruits basket
ace attorney (i’ve played every game including aai2)
my little pony: friendship is magic
pokemon (lots of pokemon stuff! i like the main games, anime, mystery dungeon, pokemon adventures... practically anything pokemon is fair game lol)
mario games
avatar the last airbender
steven universe
neopets
undertale/deltarune
homestuck
my hero academia
studio ghibli
or tbh pretty much anything i’ve ever posted about on my main or my anime blog! if i've posted a bit about something before then i can probably make boards for it even if it's not listed here, don't be afraid to ask.
and ali is really into the following:
demon slayer
animal crossing
detroit become human
overwatch
squishmallows
doctor who
good omens
danny phantom
sanrio
please do not request the following (we don’t really care if you like these things and interact with us, it's not about your morality or anything like that, we just don’t wanna make boards of them for various reasons):
south park
hetalia
bbc sherlock
hazbin hotel/helluva boss
name stimboards, unless you can give a lot of specifics--we just wouldn't do well with blank inspiration for these, i think.
things involving irl bugs/insects other than butterflies or moths. sorry, we just can't really include them or base boards on them because both mods have an aversion to bugs!
- but other than that feel free to request basically anything, ships, characters, series, even boards themed around a certain color or animal or anything else you can think of! if ali or i feel uncomfortable with it or would rather not do it for whatever reason we do have the right to reject your request. and keep in mind that whether we do boards based on ships or LGBT+ headcanons may depend on how we feel about the ship/headcanon ourselves, but it doesn't hurt to ask for them!
- also please please be patient!! personally i have other blogs that i try to keep at least semi-active and we also have real actual lives so don’t expect us to have your requests done immediately, but if it’s been more than a couple weeks feel free to send it in again or ask for an inbox check.

Ok so I decided to do something different and so what if Desmond taught his ancestors how to play undertale and decide to let them pick what route to pick first.
Altair: Altair did genocide first, then neutral, and then pacifist last after words he just tried to find all the secrets in the game that he could find, leaving no stone unturned. he's more interested in the lore then the characters in the game. He claims that he doesn't have a favorite character but he secretly likes sans. Desmon was the only one who knew this little secret of his, he found out when he saw Altair looking up San's theme song (megalovania) on his phone (that Shaun bought him) The reason why he never told anyone was because Altair threatened to kill him if he told. Altair knows sans is practically everyone's favorite character, but he didn't care, he just liked sans because he can relate to him in some ways and he likes his theme song, the only thing he doesn't like about sans is his annoying jokes. When he encountered flowey for the first time... lets just say he didn't take flowey's happiness pellets... the first 100 of them.
Ezio: ezio did flirt pacifist route first, he would charm and flirt his way threw fights. His favorite fight was with Mettaton both pacifist and genocide, sometimes the others would catch him doing some of the poses Mettaton would do in the game, in his room. He likes to think that his friendship with leonardo was just like Mettaton and Alphys's friendship. The hardest fight he had to do was the end of the genocide route with sans. He'd been stuck on that fight for hours, refusing to turn off the computer to take a break from playing the game, after 2 hours and a half, with some help from Desmond and Altair, he finally beat the route.
Connor: connor did pacifist route first. When connor got to snowdon and found out he could pet the dog characters in the game, let's just say he spent hours petting lesser dog, he petted him so much he actually managed to break threw the screen... don't ask how it happened... it just... happened. Connor's favorite fight was with the animals except on genocide, it pained him so much to do genocide and fight the animals. He like all the cool animal characters in the game, but his most favorite character was toreil (goat mom!) When Connor meet toreil for the first time he'd think about his own mother. It almost broke his little heart to do genocide and kill off all the animal characters in the game. Connor never finshed genocide because of it. His second favorite character was tammy, he even help tammy get to college. Just like everyone else he found flowey most displeasing at first, both him and Altair didn't trust flowey the first time they saw him. nothing is true everything is permitted.
Desmond: Desmond did neutral run first, mainly because he couldn't decide which route to do first, later on he did pacifist then genocide last. Desmond would play the game like any other person would, his favorite character was frisk cause he could relate to frisk having to save the underground and be forced to make the decision based on other people's choices. He liked having his say in things and having his own choices. He also had a second favorite character which was sans, mainly cause of the memes about him and the jokes sans would tell in the game. He also thought the whole time travelling prank sans did was kind of funny and was super excited to see sans in smash. (as a mii fighter)
Kassandra and Alexios: Kassandra and Alexios both did genocide first just to get a challenge from the game, then they did neutral for the flowey boss fight. The spartan twins favorite character and fight was with undyne both genocide and pacifist, but both had a meager headaches fighting sans. They saw sans as their biggest challenge yet, to them sans was an enemy they must defeat. they spent weeks and nights trying to beat sans. Eventually they beat sans and as a victory they both shouted so loud that everyone in the house heard it... GET DUNKED ON SANS! at the same time together.
Edward: Edward didn't care which one to started off with (neutral), all he cared was get as much money in the game as possible. He even looked up a tutorial on how to hack his way into getting all the money in the game. He had so much money he bought the tammy armor on his first run. His favorite character was undyne as well as her fights. His least favorite character was chara cause just like flowey and everyone in the house chara. creeped. him. out.
Jacob: Jacob did pacifist first then neutral, he never bothered finishing genocide. The reason being because he was never able to beat sans, Jacob spent a month and a half before giving up and accepting defeat. Jacob loved playing pacifist run, he loved all the goofy characters and all, but his most favorite characters were the skela-font bros he pictured him and evie as like the skeleton brothers, more specially papyrus was his favorite, he loved how papyrus was always goofy and fun loving, his favorite papyrus moment was when he jumped out of undyne's house window. He even did the stunt himself, let's just say Shaun was pissed at him for a week, making Shaun having to be the one to replace the busted window. His second favorite was sans just because he told a lot of good jokes jokes jokes🎶
Evie: evie also did pacifist first mainly cause Jacob baged her to do pacifist first. And she did not regret doing pacifist first she enjoyed every moment in the pacifist run. She loved the music, the characters, the story line of the game, it was amazing. Evie also did neutral and genocide too but it would never top pacifist for her. Her favorite character was Asriel. She found his goat form so cute and felt so bad for him, making flowey less creepy and scarey to her.
Arno: did neutral first. When he found out about the poor six children that fell in the underground he felt bad. Seeing how they help him made him feel hopeful for the young generation and felt like there was hope for humanity. he felt determined. He then did pacifist run. His favorite character was muffet, he loved the music muffet had in her battle and he admired the fact that she specialized in baking, it reminded him of the pastries from France. When he fought her in genocide run and saw her death for some reason it reminded him of Elsie... everyone in the house had to help cheer him up that day.
Haytham: Haytham did neutral first genocide then pacifist. His favorite character is Asgore. Haytham honestly agrees with Asgore having to make sacrifices to get the six human souls, he had to do what he must to set the monsters free. He mainly did neutral because he didn't want to be friends with anyone but also didn't want to kill anyone. When he did the flowey fight he was disturbed and was scard for life. He had no problem doing genocide but everytime he killed an animal based character (especially dogs) his son connor would give him murder eyes for everyone he killed. When he finshed genocide connor forced him to do pacifist just to make it up... and he did... eventually after some father and son punching talking.
Bayke: Bayke did pacifist first then neutral. He never did genocide cause he did like the idea of killing innocent monsters. He got a little teary eyed when he finshed neutral run see how the monsters he met in the underground were still doing good and miss the human child that they had befriended and he felt bad for the six human children that saved his life. When he was playing undertale for the first time he let his hawk Senu watch him play on his sholder. His favorite character is sans and monster kid. He liked sans for the funny puns he made and monster kid cause he was such a sweet kid and admired his determination to help defend the human child frisk.
Clay: clay did pacifist first then neutral. He never did genocide run, it reminded him to much of the suffering that he has seen and experienced as a test subject. He played undertale from inside of Shaun's computer. His favorite character is W.D. Gaster because just like gaster he was stuck alone in a void like environment left to watch as the world moves on with out him...
GASTER: 🖐 ♐♏♏● 🔼□🔷️🔳 🔲♋♓◼
Bonus
In the assassin house hold
Altair, Ezio, connor, and Desmond were sitting on the couch watching TV while shaun sat at the dinning room table working on his computer while rebecca sat across from him listening to music. Evie had just came walking into the living room and sat on the ground in front of the couch.
Evie: what are you guys up to?
Desmond: watching tiger king on Netflix.
Connor: I hate this show. This guy and his crew are just hurting innocent animals for fun with no reason behind this act what so ever.
Ezio: ya Leonard would not approve of this show at all.
Altair: ... where's your brother at?
Evie: oh he's playing that game Desmond showed us.
Altair: which one?
Evie: undertale I believe.
Desmond: still trying to beat genocide run ay?
Evie: *sigh* ya, still trying to beat that skeleton in the genocide run.
Altair: that fight was to easy, it took me an hour and a half to beat it.
Ezio: it's been almost a month and a half, he's never gonna beat it.
Connor: didn't you also struggle with the sans fight too? And didn't you ask Altair and Desmond had to help you beat it.
Ezio: ... shut up connor- and hey! Eventually I did beat sans on my own thank you every much!
A sudden shout could be heard from up stairs. Everyone had paused what they were doing as a sudden sound of loud running foots steps came rushing down the stairs.
Jacob came ran down to the living room with a black laptop that had the assassin's creed syndicate symbol on it.
The next thing they knew Jacob slammed the laptop onto the coffee table next to the couch. Surprisingly it didn't break on impact. And at the top of his lungs he shouted so loud that the entire house heard him shout.
Jacob: GREAT! GOOGLY MOOGLY IT'S ALL GONE TO SH*T!!!
Jacob then threw one of his throwing knives at the living room window, shattering it to pieces and with no hesitation he yeeted himself out the window.
Jacob: NEEEEAY!!!
Jacob landed face first onto the grass of their front lawn. Everyone on the couch including evie had stood up the minute he jumped out the window. Rebecca slowly removed her earbuds out from her ear and Shaun slowly closing his laptop. everyone's jaws dropped in that moment.
Soon everyone in the house had heard the commotion going on from their rooms and came rushing down stairs to investigate, upon seeing what Jacob had done their jaws had dropped as well.
Shaun: ... *deep in hale* ... JACOB WHAT THE FU-
If assassin's creed characters played undertale | part 1 | coming soon |
