The symbolism of hair meaning individuality and identity throughout Hinton’s writing is really blatant in The Outsiders (hair is the only thing greasers have, so on) but it’s actually pretty important to That Was Then This is Now too. Mark and Bryon being described as having somewhat similar hairstyles, Angela’s hair being cut (which I actually interpret in a certain way but it’s… dark), and the stark contrast of Cathy/M&M (dark hair, gray eyes) versus Mark (blond hair, gold eyes, intense/striking) and even Bryon himself (brown hair, brown eyes) all play a role in the story. I know I’m not the first person to notice this but I wanted to say something while it was on my mind
I’ll add screenshots/quotes later
#I don’t see mark and bryon as having the same hair style but tbh the symbolism is important to note#the outsiders#that was then this is now#also I hope y’all know Angela and Mark do not really get along. he respects her enough as a ‘tough girl’#but beyond that he doesn’t like her. and Angela doesn’t seem to really notice Mark at all#that doesn’t really have to do with the hair symbolism though
