defending KATSEYE (long post bc wtf)

survival of the fittest: predictions for generation two

i said in rancord sub-boosty chat that i would probably write a comprehensive meta regarding my theories for generation two and then it got nuked bc i wrote way too much in one message w spoiler blinders so here it is!

spoilers for generation loss episodes one, two, and three.

given that i started watching genloss assuming it was an allegory for genetic algorithms in ai due to the language of “generations” (knowing now that generation loss, as a concept, refers to “degradation of quality resulting from imperfect reproduction techniques”) i think that there's an element both of refinement and of deterioration here. a couple of elements are at play:

for those unfamiliar, a genetic algorithm is a method by which self-learning ai acquire and refine their pool of knowledge. very generally speaking, ai are trained in “generations,” with each generation learning from its predecessor and improving upon itself to reach its ultimate goal. to this end, genetic algorithms use process of elimination to narrow down the best ai—in other words, natural selection: survival of the fittest. the strongest wins. 

in the context of genloss, this seems to align with showfall media’s goal: creating the Perfect Hero for their Perfect Show. it also, perhaps, hints at what’s to come in generations two and three. i get the feeling that we will be seeing new ranboos, each one better equipped for the tasks demanded by the show than their previous iterations, and yet also retaining the knowledge that allowed the generations before them to survive. what are favorable traits within the ecosystem of showfall media? complacency? levelheadedness? the ability to perform unflinching normalcy under hellish conditions? at any rate, showfall media wants the generations of our hero, ranboo, to eventually acquire the skills to be the ideal protagonist and engaging pov character, whatever that may entail. it’d behoove us to keep an eye out for changes in generation two that seem influenced by the erratic and even unstable nature of generation one. 

(on a slight tangent: this is also how our brains learn things, and is relevant to trauma formation and retention. we often develop trauma responses to specific things—triggers—because those are what helped us survive traumatic experiences. there is positive reinforcement here: because we survived, we will do it again, and again, and again. parallel to natural selection, our brains prune responses; this is why trauma survivors have altered responses to things that may seem completely normal for people who don’t share those triggers or responses with them. altered response in brain structures, particularly the amygdala (the so-called “fear center”) are part of the observed neurobiological differences btwn those with and without ptsd—but i digress.)

on to generation loss. this has probably already been theorized before so i won’t beat a dead horse, but in the context of knowledge retention and crystallization as mentioned above, i think we’ll also see the next generations deteriorate significantly. this may manifest as more frequent breaks between the narrative of the show and what’s actually happening (e.g. this clip [blood and emotional distress tw] of the showfall media illusion breaking and us being shown ranboo elbow deep in charlie’s blood) and likely more emotional turmoil and derealization on the part of generation two and three. i wonder if generation two will inherit generation one’s cracked mask as a symbolic gesture and as an implicit warning, but that’s just broad speculation (and i imagine that mask is pretty much crushed to bits by now).

also re:the idea of imperfect reproduction causing the phenomenon of generation loss. we have to remember that ranboo is not the only character to be rescripted. charlie has had multiple generations. sneeg has had multiple generations. it’s sort of implied jerma has had multiple generations just by proxy of how long he’d been part of the genloss project. circling back to charlie and sneeg, though: their generations were imperfect. they made mistakes that broke the flow and immersion of the show, and it cost them. the generation that made the mistake was killed, and a new generation—streamlined, scripted, perfectly seamless—was put in their place. i found sneeg particularly rebellious, and also wonder about the importance of that hat and how it seemingly granted him self-awareness. at a guess it was because the hat was a holdover from the previous episode so the continuity error was what fucked sneeg up, in which case the hat didn’t actually have to be put on sneeg for the same effect to happen, but sneeg did hold it together remarkably well—long enough to attempt an escape. i wonder if that, too, was scripted. i wonder if everything we saw, everything we were handed with both hands by showfall and by hetch, was scripted.

ultimately i was super intrigued by genloss and am hyperfixating on it, if you couldn’t already tell. it was an incredible production with an incredible cast, story, costuming—everything. i’m in love with it. thank you to ranboo and to everyone on the cast and crew for genloss and i’m very excited for what’s next.

other stuff that stuck out to me that didn’t quite fit into this prediction:

hetch isn’t the founder, he’s just someone who appears to have control over the production that ranboo specifically was starring in (which is still a lot of executive power). saying that makes me wonder if there are other shows showfall media is in charge of, and genloss is just one of them. i found it interesting that hetch told ranboo to keep his mask at the outset of ep3, and this was the main reason why i personally did not trust him.

according to the genloss bts twitter, there was a “live” ending. that said, i think hetch opening the floor for ranboo to speak directly to the audience was what ultimately swung the vote so far to “die.” i’ve seen people talking about this already: we swarmed the vote en masse for “live” until hetch told ranboo they would just be reprogrammed into the show again, and ranboo begged. they begged us to let them die. look at us. we were never going to be able to say no to them. (i also think ranboo’s death makes for a compelling story in the future regarding my theory of generations, but i don’t know what the “live” ending would have looked like, so this is fully biased.)

thinking about how the show was shaped to culminate to ep3 from the beginning. we’ve seen and heard hetch through it all, and he was the one to break the illusion for ranboo. every last bit was scripted. uhh something something i think ranboo’s rebellion against chat in ep3 was also intended, even if the specific code that he chose wasn’t scripted. it really defeats a person to realize nothing is in their control, you know? the freedom was an illusion after all.

What sort of stuff do you look for in a partner

On top of the obvious (be quite left leaning, feminist, queer friendly, sex positive etc.), I think the main thing is that my partner is *interesting*.

I want someone who has passions. It doesn’t matter so much what those passions are but it’s great to be around someone who is strongly invested in things outside of themself. I want to be able to talk about art/literature/politics/culture with you. I want to listen to you explaining your special interests to me and getting opinionated. I want to be able to go place and do activities with you.

I’m single and chatting with a few people but I have two main guys that I’ve been dating for a while on a relatively serious basis.

Guy A is a hot older man. He’s a journalist and author who is very passionate about politics and current events. He writes books about subjects he’s interested in, has a lot to say about the things he cares about. Loves trains, Dr Who, his dog, history (especially the Roman Empire lol), literature etc. He takes me to weird museums and art galleries and cocktail bars around London and we have great insightful conversations and make each other laugh and make each other think. We have great physical chemistry, great sex and we’re very attracted to one another.

Guy B is an absolute dreamboat, very sexy and fun. We have a lot of great physical chemistry and he showers me with attention and praise. He has a very solid responsible management job but he’s also in law school, training to be a sexy tech lawyer bc he’s very passionate about legislation around things like AI/deepfakes etc. In his spare time, he’s massively into basketball and is currently teaching me about the NBA and getting me addicted to sports. We like to stay up late and watch sports together and have fun. He’s a big nerd who runs like five different DnD games with his friends, who are a big queer diverse group of people.

They’re both very different but the thing that they have in common, aside from being physically gorgeous, is that they’re fun and interesting. They have shit going on in their lives and can hold long interesting conversations about a variety of topics they’re passionate about. They both make me laugh. They both make me think.

They have lives outside of me and don’t depend on me but at the same time, they’re both very loving and generous and kind with me and treat me well. They’re both emotionally mature and deal with things in a healthy way.

If I was looking to be in a relationship right now, those are the kind of qualities I would look for in a partner.

saw a take that peeved me in the vocaloid feed on bluesky but i don’t wanna be confrontational there + my thoughts are too powerful for a 300 character per post thread so im making it tumblr’s problem

due to my intense vsynth brainworms this is going to sound incredibly pedantic and annoying which is why i am posting it here okay here we go

the post was sort of a ‘callout’ of a creator who uses synthv for covers of fnf songs or whatever. the general body was like “they write their own lyrics but they make the vocals using ai with a program called synthesizer v” (the implication being, “this person is an ai-using fraud, don’t support them”)

if ur in the community or like have a little bit of an idea of how ai is associated with synthv specifically this is a nonsense uninformed take (the ‘ai’ training is used for autotuning/cross language synthesis/some other shit idk but the point is it’s not the type of ai that like, writes the melody/lyrics for you and is voiced from random samples from unknowing providers but i’ll get back to this later)

ai is mentioned on synthv’s website (also vocaloid’s much to the detriment of news articles that report on hatsune miku) so it’s a common misunderstanding, whatever. it would be nice if people actually looked into the ways ai works in vsynth at least a little bit but in an age where artists are on the defense against the ai boogeyman i guess i sorta understand the knee jerk reaction to assume the ai in vsynth software like synthv is the Bad kind. annoying, but nothing new.

but i think what made this post rotate in my mind to the point of crystallizing into unnecessary rage is an add-on that was like “i just prefer my music to be sung by real people!” followed by “by the way, vocaloid isn’t ai, so no you’re not bad if you like hatsune miku music”

firstly, i COMPLETELYYYY understand that the premise and general sound of vocal synth music is not for everyone. the computerized words, the unrealism, or even the fact that it’s not an actual person singing, like whatever that’s fine i get it. but like you can’t go around and be like “by the way vocaloid [aka hatsune miku] is chill don’t worryyyy” bc that line of thinking from my understanding doesn’t really make sense? miku isn’t a real person either 😭😭 her latest release even uses ai! (at least i think it does cuz vocaloid 6 has ai support but idk i guess that doesn’t matter) does she just get a free pass cuz she’s an internet darling?

miku is a piece of software where you write the midi for her vocals and input the lyrics so a slurry of samples recorded by saki fujita can be played back in an in-character singing voice. synthv is a piece of software with similar character voice databases where you do the same thing, write a midi and input lyrics so a database’s voice samples put it all together to sing back. the inclusion of ai in this process is to streamline the workflow for the user to automatically work out the pitch transitions between notes to save on time manually tuning, creating a more realistic playback. this ai, perhaps merely the inclusion of these two letters in the proximity of synthv’s marketing, is what makes synthv both Significantly Different and Inferior to miku.

the lack of ai with vocaloid (as far as op knew, cuz need i remind you vocaloid as of its 6th installment uses similar ai to synthv lol) making it Better than synthv sent the implication, TO ME, that op thinks that the ai used in synthv is the type that like, takes samples from other people without their permission to create the voices (then leading to the “i just want my songs sung by REAL people” aka not sung by dubiously gathered samples). i recognize this means of creating ai voices to impersonate other people and make them say things they should not without their knowledge or permission is CERTAINLY bad but like that’s not how any of this works if we’re talking synthv (you could argue this applies to those utau banks that make voicebanks for like sonic the hedgehog and shit but those usually sound like ass and are about as convincing as a sentence mixed youtube poop). maybe that’s not what they meant (i don’t wanna dig up the post cuz i don’t wanna be bothered and it’s probably gonna piss me off to the point of starting something which i don’t want) but based on my understanding of their point this is like. wholly untrue. in fact synthv voicebanks (particularly those from eclipsed sounds whose terms of service are free to read on their website) have special terms specifically designed to protect the voice providers of their databases BECAUSE of the extra realism in their voices (terms such as, “you can’t credit any voice work done with Solaria to Emma Rowley [her voice provider] or anyone else besides the software itself” in the case Solaria is used to say something objectionable and cast it on Rowley, that would be a breach of the terms and might even get your license revoked). shit like that is likely what people who are afraid of ai voices expect to happen but there were contracts signed to protect and inform the voice providers of what their vocal likeness is being used for + compensation paid to them for their work providing vocal samples SPECIFICALLY for this product. and ofc miku is the same. ITS THE SAME. BUT MIKU IS A FUNNY INTERNET MEME SO SHES FINE. GRRRRR!!!!!!

sorry for another ai related question but I hope you read and hear me out:

that’s awesome to see you can draw and your skills really show! You just use ai as reference, which I somewhat understand where you are coming from, getting reference can be hard especially if you have a specific pose in mind! references in no way make you lazier or bad, but using ai generative art is feeding a system that “steals” (I put quotes bc ik it’s more complicated than that) from artists, that AI then trains itself every time it is used. you’re supporting programs that main purpose is to take the human out of art. I know AI in of itself isn’t inherently bad, it’s used plentifully in different industries even the art world like animation (klaus and spiderverse). But generative ai is just so harmful, there’s so many other resources where you can make or find references, like for example, something you could’ve used in your recent ghostface post instead of AI could’ve been an application (ex: magic poser, posemy.art, blender) where you can rig 3d models into whatever pose and angle you like!

I get where you are coming from, generative AI is super interesting and I can’t help those who want to play with it, but I don’t think you guys realize how destructive using these programs are to the very community you’re apart of. Nobody can stop you from doing what you want of course I hope I was able to give you a different perspective and hope you don’t see this as another “nagging anti ai hater” but as someone who just wants to help a fellow artist out!

I totally get where you're coming from—I've had over 10 years of my online portfolios scraped and included in some of these AI systems, so I understand the concerns. But it's important to differentiate between using AI as a tool for inspiration or reference and outright copying someone else's work.

When I use AI, it’s in a very limited way, and the end result doesn’t closely resemble any specific artist’s work to the point where it could be considered copyright infringement. The AI helps me explore creative possibilities, but the final piece is still very much my own vision. You would be hard pressed to get an AI to raw output slasher simp art.

I used to be strongly anti-AI too, mostly because I hadn't taken the time to understand it fully. But after learning into how it works my perspective changed. I’m not blindly pro-AI now, but I do see the potential benefits when used responsibly. I think it’s important to be "Anti-AI in specific contexts" rather than dismissing it entirely. It’s a nuanced issue, and my views might evolve as the technology and its implications become clearer, but based on what I’ve learned so far, I feel comfortable with how I’m currently using it.

i definitely do feel that tech companies calling everything AI is not like a conspiracy theory so much as them trying to cash in on the latest Cool Thing, and i think that’s an important thing to say bc i will not stand for conspiracy theories, though the way some people act about AI (in the industry or not) really does make me want to pull my hair out….i see ppl sharing news articles on reddit and then using chatgpt summaries to describe them all the damn time and it’s like…ok so are you reading the article? or are you doing one step more than just reading the headline?? assuming the summary is even accurate anyway…. and every new pc wanting to call itself an AI PC ™….do you like copilot? no? too bad that’s all we want you to use for anything anymore……

(and ethics etc aside, like, it’s too early in the game for these so-called AI products to even be good anyway….)

and it’s frustrating bc i feel like i am constantly begging for ppl to acknowledge situations have Nuance bc AI Bad as a blanket statement is not. good. especially coming from people who don’t know anything about ML. ML has a lot of very good, very practical uses, and it’s been used for years! identifying cancer cells, that one australian team that trained robots to id and kill crown of thorns starfish to protect the great barrier reef, etc etc.

even generative AI i’m hesitant to put a blanket ban on, because i have seen it done well, when i visited the charité museum (of all places) in berlin last fall—

i’ve just woken up so i can’t be bothered to word this properly AND I’m not even a techie but tbh a lot of the hatred of AI is like. a bit pearl-clutchy or screaming at a film of a train coming towards you or whatever. there is obviously a lot to be said in regard to implementing it within creative industries and in terms of using it to just avoid paying artists but just like robotics it is something that should have great utility if used ‘meaningfully’. like the idea that automation should be used to make lives easier and to remove a large portion of labour from society without impacting wellbeing/way of life. to make people have more time of their own rather than time at work. obviously not going to happen in the current economic system but there is nothing inherently wrong with AI it’s just about utility… and of course we should be using it to replace or support menial, difficult or dangerous jobs not creativity and entertainment and art etc etc. although honestly in some ways the same thing goes for AI art in general (when you look at it as a tool). models have bad data scraping methods and things but i don’t think all AI art is bad just bc of the fact that it’s made by AI. it just asked some questions. because what is art? like if someone programmed a robot to create an original piece of art without that kind of theft then we could call them the artist really even if it was the robot that did it. the robot itself is the art. same goes for AI imo but it’s extremely reliant on the ethics. there are not as many divisions between tech/science and art as you think. again obviously current usage of AI on the forefront of things is not good. but i don’t think it’s the end of the world we just have to utilise it differently. like are we kind of scapegoating it for just the problems of automation under capitalism
