Hello! I don't know if you make requests but I wanted to ask you for advice. You see, I'm a writer in the Twst fandom. My writing is aimed at women, but I want to expand on that topic. I recently received requests to write a male, trans Mc\reader. However, I have not been able to do it due to my lack of experience and fear of offending someone. I don't know much about those types of people and that's why I would like to hear your opinion. Do you have any advice for me?
I do take requests actually, so thank you for asking!
Disclaimer: Other trans writers/creators may say different, but from my experience writing and being a trans person, I think this is the best route to take.
First, the advice I have for this depends on how integral the reader/MC being trans or a guy is for the story/headcanons.
If their identity is more of a side note/ not the main plot of your fanfic, you don't have to do too much alterations to how you would write fanfic with women in mind. Outside of making sure the pronouns are right, having them refereed to as the character's partner or boyfriend, and maybe not having the reader wear things that are seen as more feminine like dresses or skirts, you should be able to progress like normal.
For stories that have the readers gender or their gender experience as the main factor, I would honestly try and find a beta reader who has either lived experience as that identity or knows enough about that identity. Smut runs a similar route here, but since I'm not sure if you write smut and I don't have a lot of experience writing it either, I won't say much more about it.
Something I do want to say though: you don't have to write for trans or male readers if you don't want to/ feel you aren't knowledgeable enough.
Wanting to be inclusive of other genders for readers is great and a very kind thing to do. That said: your fear about writing it is also super understandable. I suggest writing stuff doesn't put a heavy focus on a trans or male readers identity (the second category I mentioned) if you don't have a lot of experience with it or don't have a beta reader/friend who does. That way you are not as likely to write something that could be offensive and don't have to step too far out of your comfort zone.
Also! Look at your comment sections or the messages you get about your trans or male reader works. They can be great at pointing out small errors/ things to add in to your trans works.
Thanks for asking for advice and I hope your writing goes well!!
