𖦹°。⋆ akaashi as a best friend
Tumblr media
⟡ cw: fluff, friends to lovers, mentions of drinking and vomiting
⟡ a/n: akaashi is so pretty and i find writers to be so charming.
⟡ best friend series: konoha, bokuto, || masterlist
Tumblr media
best friend akaashi who you met your first year of high school when your childhood friend, bokuto, introduced you to his volleyball team.
best friend akaashi who you got closer to when you saw him in the library writing something which sparked a connection because you liked writing too.
best friend akaashi who is confused by the praise you give him when you read over what he's written.
best friend akaashi who asked if you wanted to be manager the next year because having you around made bokuto happy (because having you around meant akaashi was more calm and happy - bokuto likes akaashi happy)
best friend akaashi who you went to college with and both majored in the same thing (literature)
best friend akaashi who would always proofread your projects while you proofread his since you were in most of the same classes.
best friend akaashi who would make you tea or hot coco during allnighters because he knows you hate the taste of coffee.
best friend akaashi who never had any interest in going to parties but went along with you just to make sure you were safe.
best friend akaashi who didn't care when you vomited on his favorite shirt after drinking too much because he was just glad you weren't hurt.
best friend akaashi who set up a warm bath for you after the party so you wouldn't feel gross while you were about to go to bed.
best friend akaashi who realized his feelings for you long ago but shrugged them off because he just thought that maybe you were just being nice.
best friend akaashi who decided to finally accept his feelings after you cooked him his favorite meal as a thank you for taking care of you when you needed.
best friend akaashi who asked bokuto what he should do with his feelings only to be answered with a loud cheering on the other end of the phone because he was happy that his two favorite people liked each other.
best friend akaashi who was confused when bokuto said 'liked each other' but when he asked him about it bokuto faked the phone call breaking up because 'oops didn't mean to say that'/
best friend akaashi who stays up all night thinking about what bokuto says but can't take it anymore so he gets up and walks to your dorm thats down the hall in the middle of the night to finally ask you.
best friend akaashi who apologizes for waking you up but immediately says 'bokuto said you liked me'.
best friend akaashi who stared at you as you collected your thoughts before finally confirming that you did in fact liked him.
best friend akaashi who said that he had feelings for you too which caused you to jump into his arms so that he's carrying you while you both are hugging.
best friend akaashi who is now boyfriend akaashi who right after college ends up writing a small and cute manga about your daily lives together which was published and became a hit. (bokuto bought like 50 copies btw).

A Year in Review
Tumblr media
SO ITS BEEN A LONNNNG YEAR! a very very long year, but a lovely year and a very precious year!!! I feel like because of how big a year its been, we need a recap of everything that happened, and everything that this platform has allowed me to achieve!!
SO LETS START WITH JANUARY!!
Tumblr media
I was still in school during this month, so I didn't get to draw as much as i wanted, but i wrote a ton!! I published chapters of Survey Says, Rehab/Cohab, and also the seminal work of fiction that is Positive Reinforcement! I want to celebrate how much writing i got done, especially with how that's taken a back seat on my blog for a while now!!
Tumblr media
In february I got more time to focus on my work, and I hit 1000 followers!!!! I conducted the first ever askbox purges, and I drew a load of art!! I also met some great new friends during this month!! (hi soda! :D)
Tumblr media
I STARTED STREAMING IN MARCH!!! I think this was one of the best decisions i ever made, because being able to chat and hang out with everyone as i draw is always hugely inspiring. I look forward to streaming and chatting with everyone each week :]
Tumblr media
IN APRIL I DREW TOO MUCH NON ROBOT ASS. I finally got around to watching dungeon meshi and i became absolutely fucking obsessed with fantasy. I've always been a huge interest in fae and fantasy and worldbuilding, so knightformers is such a fun creative exercise!!
Tumblr media
and then in may my computer exploded. Not actually, the screen just broke. I drew so much knightformers in may that my screen killed itself. oops!
Tumblr media
In june, I not only hit 2k followers, but started a stickers business!!! All of your support from that made me feel confident in my ability to sustain myself on my art, and gave me the inspiration to push myself harder as the year went on!
Tumblr media
In july, not only did I go to my first transformers convention, I met @pinkanonwrites in person for the first time, and MY BOYFRIEND MOVED INTO MY HOUSE! This month was so busy, but meeting pink and going to tfcon was so fantastic :]
Tumblr media
In august it was my BIRTHDAY!! :D i turned 21! And I went on a prolonged inbox hiatus to focus on establishing my art style !
Tumblr media
In september my hiatus continued, and I created meter, the greatest blight on the tfa tag to ever exist! Everyone exploded over my sweet boy, and it made me very happy to see :D
Tumblr media
In october, i entered what I consider my own personal renaissance!! I was incredibly inspired by tf one, and starting to use more colour in my artwork since september! I released halloween merch (and then got my account on ko-fi suspended for a bit but it was fine) and hit three thousand followers!
Tumblr media
IN NOVEMBER I KEPT MYSELF BUSY. I worked on tons of merch, made hypnovembers, and sketched up an absolute storm. The whole month honestly feels like a blur to me. AND THEN THE CANADA POST WORKERS WENT ON STRIKE (union strong, lads, good luck!)
Tumblr media
Andddd because of that postal strike, I had to cross the us border into america to get all of my stickers sent off!!! december has continued to be incredibly busy, but! if you're seeing this, it means I'm ON HIATUS OFFICIALLY!!! AND MY WORK IS DONE (or mostly done ehehe)
I want to give a huge thanks to all of you. Because of your support, both financially and socially, not only has my confidence grown, but with it, so has my artistic skill and my income.
Drawing for all of you has allowed me to manage my anxiety more readily with medical marijuana, has allowed me to become more financially independant and responsible, and has opened up so many doors for me socially.
doing this has always been something that was more pipe dream or fantasy than reality, so the fact I get to say I draw for a living at all is a privilege i don't take lightly in the slightest.
I will always be proud to draw for this community. Thank you everyone, and see you next year!

Fanfic Writer Interview
Thankyouuu to @uriekukistan and @rocketkid300 for the tag!!
Tagging: @izabella95 and @sailormew4
wow this one is a bit long oops.
How many works do you have on ao3?
i have 36 works (plus a couple of orphaned fics), 32 fics for jjk and 4 for haikyuu! most of my fics are one-shots, but i have a couple of multichapter fics, and there are 2 currently unfinished.
Your top 5 stories by kudos/likes:
Saving You: my longest ever project and i'm still not over how much attention this one got. it's an itafushi time travel fix it fic, and writing it made me realize how much i like writing angst and hurt comfort!
so much for keeping this just friends: okay so this is a kuroken one-shot, post-time skip, with a smut scene at the end. i'm a bit confused about how it got so popular (my best guess is the timing, as i wrote it after the movie came out) but i'm really grateful.
i'm not too far and you're my favorite place: also a kuroken one-shot, in a 5+1 format. it's also rated explicit. wait, i think i see a pattern here. so maybe it's the porn, huh?
The Truth Is, I Want To Kiss You - itafushi one-shot (and no, this one doesn't have any smut). yuuji is hit by a curse that makes him say every thought that comes into his head, and megumi is forced to deal with the consequences. actually kinda happy with how this one turned out, and i'm glad so many people enjoyed it.
five times megumi's shikigami were affectionate with yuuji, and one time megumi finally was: - another 5+1, a cute, fluffy, megumi pov oneshot. one of the few times when humor was kinda successful, i think.
Do you respond to comments? Why/why not?
i always try to respond to every comment i get. sometimes (like now) i fall behind with comments on my one-shots, but i will eventually catch up! i really appreciate any kind of interaction and feedback from my readers, and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside when people leave me a comment.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angriest ending?
you know, i've been called an angst monster, but one thing about my fics is that they always have a happy ending. i just don't have the heart to write sad endings. that being said, at one point when multiple friends of mine started working on MCD fics, i kinda wanted to try it too. but i just can't bring myself to kill off half of itafushi, so they both had to go. there was resolution, and they were together in death, but they still died. so it was kinda bittersweet.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
honestly, most of them end quite nicely, and the ones that don't end happily still have a hopeful ending, if that makes sense. but i guess Saving You is the happiest, cause we get a proposal at the end, and a wedding bonus chapter is in the works!
Do you write crossovers?
i don't have any published ones yet, but i fucked around with a naruto/jjk crossover idea and wrote some scenes. i just like the idea of itafushi showing narusasu how to fucking communicate and be honest with each other. and i like the idea of naruto trying to convince yuuji to befriend the murderous monster sealed inside him, cause for him it worked out pretty well, so why can't it work for yuuji? (sukuna is not amused). basically a crackfic, which may or may not see the light of day.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
yeah, i got some mean comments and some weird asks in my inbox once or twice. i don't understand why people get so angry and aggressive over fics, like, you can just close the tab and move on. especially if it's something that was clearly tagged, and was never intended to appeal to your specific taste. constructive criticism is of course always welcome, and i love interacting with readers, but when someone tells me they don't like a certain part and then follows up by telling me that the whole fic is trash, yeah, not a good vibe. lmao i remember getting a really condescending comment about me getting the timeline wrong and how i didn't even bother to get my facts right. spoiler, i had the manga open while writing and i got the timeline correct, so someone made a fool out of themselves by commenting that. ngl, that was pretty funny.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
i like writing smut! but, i find that smut attracts a certain type of audience and i just don't have the patience to deal with the problematic ones. people seem to be very particular about their preferred top/bottom dynamics, and they get real upset when i don't follow their headcanons. so, i'll still keep most of my fics sfw, but if the mood strikes me, i might write a smutty one-shot, or an explicit scene in a multichapter fic. my smut scenes are usually pretty heated, and there's a bit of power play involved. i enjoy writing characters taking charge in a fun, consensual kinda way.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
actually, i had multiple fics of mine stolen and posted on wattpad under a different account name. i think the thing that pissed me off the most was seeing the author's notes and the "author" replying to some of the comments, like, are you fucking serious, bro. props to the wattpad tho, they took down the account pretty quickly after i reported it.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
nope, but i would probably cry if anyone wanted to do that.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
also no, but i'd love to!
What’s your all-time favorite ship?
i guess no one is going to get surprised if i say itafushi, right? there's just something about their dynamic that has me in a chokehold and won't let me go. i enjoy reading their characterization in different settings, and there are so many ways you can explore their relationship. i also love satosugu, narusasu, kuroken, bokuaka, kagehina and iwaoi, so there's no shortage of fics for me to read.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
i have a half-abandoned fic about post-canon megumi going through several stages of spiraling out of control, hearing voices, seeing visions and generally losing it. he's basically having a psychotic break, and it's really dark. i've never written angst to this extent before, and it's hard. i'd love to finish it, but it's a challenge, because i can't quite grasp the tone i want to set for it. might be worth revisiting some time later.
What are your writing strengths?
i love writing dialogue, and i like using it to convey character's personalities and relationships. my fics usually have a lot of banter between characters, and it's usually a lot of fun. i get told i'm good at writing angst, which makes me proud. also, if someone says i'm funny, then i consider that a personal achievement.
What are your writing weaknesses?
as i said, i love writing dialogue. well, it's not a weakness, per se, but my fics often turn out dialogue-heavy, and sometimes i need to balance that out. it's a learning process. my prose is a little bit flat, i don't usually add much detail to descriptions, so there's a lot of room for improvement in that department. it's mostly due to my impatience and desire to move the plot along, but whenever i read beautiful descriptive prose, it makes me wanna work harder.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
if the situation calls for it, and the characters can have a conversation in another language, why not? i watch anime with subs, so honorifics sound natural and don't distract me, but when i use them myself, i like to keep them canon-compliant and not overdo it. some "iconic" japanese phrases do lose their charm when translated (choso hung up on the onii-chan thing is a good example), so in those cases, i'm good with just using the original version. it's a personal preference.
What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
i'm late to the whole anime party, so i'm still catching up with everything. i managed to finish naruto recently, and i read a bunch of sasunaru fics, and honestly, i would love to try and write something for them. they have a rougher, more aggressive dynamic, certainly more toxic than itafushi, and i'd love to play around with that.
i have 4 haikyuu fics published, but i don't have anything written for kagehina yet, so that's next on the list.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
i had to think about this for a while, cause all of my fics are special to me in their own way. i guess i will always lean towards my angsty ones, cause, i love it when a description of pain gets the reader's emotions all stirred up, and i have a knack for making people cry, apparently. so, i'd say the world is cruel but i still love you (along with the farmfic that follows it up called let's take this mess and make a home)
but i'm kinda happy with my latest angsty one-shot, blessed with a curse, too.

Mediaposting 2023, #35: Banana Fish (anime)
Tumblr media
[said while vibrating very quickly and typing out like 20 different bullet points] i like this series a normal amount
okay so. non-spoiler thoughts:
step 1 YOU SHOULD READ/WATCH THIS. it does have content warnings for literally everything you can possibly think of as needing a common content warning (drug abuse, sexual assault, racism, and thats absolutely just the tip of the iceberg) but my fucking god. no wonder it's been such an influential piece of media on literally every jp anime/manga crime story (especially the BL ones) written since
for a series that is literally one of the early genesis points of BL as a genre i was ABSOLUTELY expecting more actual BL than was in this LOL. not that i'm really upset, bc honestly i really like the way that ash and eiji's relationship is written in a shoujo-y "they obviously care about each other a lot but it's not going to be outright romance" kind of way. bc like, honestly? that makes it way more emotionally satisfying (and devastating). i think it would actually make less sense if anything more happened In the story (though more happening in the epilogue wouldnt hurt LOL)
how the FUCK was this published in a shoujo magazine
the time period change to modern day from the mid-80's has both helped and hindered this series bc like. on one hand. much easier to do everything with a phone. also the update to shorter's character design was excellent,10/10 no notes. on the other hand. the Everything About It makes it so obvious that it was written to be a product of its time.
speaking of ^ ash turning from A Guy Who Knows How To Use A Computer into a hacking genius is so. why. i mean you can update it for sure but Why Like This
god i wish this had more room to breathe sometimes bc the exposition goes WILDLY fast sometimes. why did they try and do 19 volumes in 24 episodes. the 39 episodes that the director wanted would have been so nice to have
that said: the emotional moments that i actually give a shit about and that make up the core of the weight of the story are given what they deserve. at least up to volume 5 they are. gestures at ep 9? and 22 with a pained smile
i literally could write an essay about why it works so well as a spin on the american-style gangster story even while it definitely has flaws. and how its influenced so many fucking things. my god.
it has flaws for SURE but the rest is so good that i don't care. which is rare for me (gestures at nirvanai/neo twewy being other examples)
spoiler thoughts under the cut (like full-very-ending-of-series spoilers) but YEAH UH I LIKE THIS THING CAN YOU TELL BY HOW MUCH I WROTE ABOUT IT.
it does kind of annoy me that literally all of the canon-MLM (probably gay but you know) guys are horrible people lol. like wow love how the gay predator stereotype is on full display here. feeeeels baaaaad. i know i know asheiji homoeroticism i am ON THAT TRAIN
however yut-lung being feminine out of a wish to carry on his dead mom's legacy is kind of a slay. ive seen people go "ugh it sucks that one of the villains is a feminine man' but while he is definitely not a good person hes one of the less terrible villains, just like. as a person. hes also a teenager in shitty circumstances just with way more power and sway
here's the part where I admit that I was spoiled on the ending so it didn't hit as hard for me OOPS. however. the anime DOES leave it open-ended and it fucking irritates me that anime-only people are like "boo i hate the ending bc ash dies!!!" when it is LITERALLY AMBIGUOUS. i have heard that the manga is less ambiguous about it but :') oh well. anime-onlys what are you doing
speaking of ^ i actually like the ending. like i think a lot of people who absolutely hate it must not have a lot of familiarity with gangster movies as a genre bc it is a genre convention that the Main Gangster dies in the end. granted this was a hayes code thing which the manga definitely did not have to do LOL but its definitely supposed to feel unfair bc ash's damn LIFE is unfair.
however i'm glad the anime makes the ending ambiguous bc that feels like a more fitting end. like ash's life was always in limbo, considering what he was doing, so making his life in limbo at the end too? Good. Yes. Do That
the fucking. everything with shorter and the sa-yo-na-ra bit. i die. that shit is so emotionally painful
i know this sounds weird but i kind of wish they dragged out the "what the hell does banana fish mean" thing a LIIIITTLE longer but by that i mean like, halfway point of the series. like they could have used a little more time to figure out what it is. also that would have let shorter live a little longer ay lmao that said this criticism also almost definitely applies to the manga soooo. you know

Oops, I accidentally a whole book. Is that bad?
Forgive that absolute blast from the past of a title. (For those going, "huh?", it's an obscure, out-of-date meme. Don't worry about it.)
But - yeah. One of many reasons this blog has been immensely quiet over the last few months, apart from that book bundle including The Meaning Wars, is that I've been completely obsessed with a new project, called Prairie Weather.
Back in university, I had a short story column in The Meliorist, the U of L's school paper, and I wrote a series of one-off shorts with loosely connected characters. I'd always toyed with the idea of writing a whole novel about these interconnected characters - and well, for some reason, around October of last year, I just got up and did it.
So now the connected stories of a group of university students trying to deal with friendship, romance, and all the resulting drama has become not one book, but two - or three, depending on whether I go indie with this or get picked up for trad pub (traditional publishing). It's set in 2011, right here in Lethbridge, and it's a love letter to the city and the university - both of which are beautiful, and underutilized as settings. If you like feminism, queer love, heartbreak, stabbings, and bomb threats, you'll probably be into this book.
Now, I'm actually going to try and send out some queries for Prairie Weather, and see if I can get it traditionally published. That's a thing I haven't really done before, and it might go absolutely nowhere, but I thought I'd take a shot at it. At worst, I get to improve my query-writing skills, mess around with Querytracker, sorta learn how to write a synopsis, and that sort of useful thing.
I was also going through my blog archives and stats, and I noticed a huge surge in traffic last month. So, thank you for the views! I didn't realise just how much I used to write on here.
But unfortunately, Blogger is a pretty dead platform, and all the cool kids are on Substack and Patreon these days. So while I do plan to continue posting over here, if I don't get anywhere with Prairie Weather, I'm going to try serialising that publication on Ream, Substack, and Patreon. We'll see if I get any traction. In the meantime, if any of y'all somehow know an agent who's hunting for contemporary fiction or literary fiction, hit me up!
And yes, I am still planning to try and get Monsters and Fools out this year. It's at about 63 of roughly 80k, give or take. There's a few big plot twists left to write, and then this dark sequel to The Underlighters will finally, finally be ready to release into the world. The sequel is more of a dystopian, noire-toned piece, and will focus on what happens when activism fails in the face of a conspiracy...
If you thought it was dark before? It's only going to get darker.

What was the Hello, Stranger controversy?
Hello, Stranger (or as I just found out despite owning this book in paperback, "Hello Stranger", comma is needed imo) is a Ravenels book that I honestly think is my least favorite Kleypas book I've read... which sucks! Because the heroine has an amazing name! (Garrett Gibson. God I love it. If I had a daughter I'd name her Garrett, but if I play my cards right my womb will be forever empty, so we've gotta just not do that.)
Anyway, Garrett falls in love with Ethan Ransom (another fun name, but honestly, this being a Ravenels book was soooo tangential... *SPOILER ALERT* he is a Ravenel bastard--I forget if he was West and Devon's brother or cousin, it seriously didn't check for me) who is a detective. I'll be frank. If this book was *better* I don't know if people would've clocked the issue as much. Which isn't right. But I know the romance community. They're clocking shit faster than they used to, but I think the combo of this being Lisa Kleypas and this being a weak Lisa Kleypas is what got it called out.
Smart Bitches, Trashy Books published this review which basically sums the issue up. Ethan talks to Garrett about an Indian woman he fucked while he was training to be a spy. She was a woman from Calcutta that taught him about sex and desire ("Kama".... I don't think he actually says AND THEN WE READ THE KAMA SUTRA, but anyone read this would think of it when "Kama" is mentioned) and allll the sexy shit that Exotic Women know. It's gross. It's flippant. It's dumb as shit.
Lisa then apologized publicly and pretty quickly that passage was erased from all digital copies of the book. I happen to own a (secondhand) paperback of the book that still has that scene, but from what I understand all subsequent printings have deleted it as well.
Since then (I mean, I think it's since then?) Lisa has made an effort to edit a lot of her older works. Most notably, It Happened One Autumn, which does have a scene that, yes, is genuinely problematic--but tbh, I blame her a lot less for that than I do the Hello, Stranger thing. In part because of how romance functions, and in part because of how long ago the book was published compared to Stranger--Stranger was a 2018 release while It Happened One Autumn is a 2005 release. As much as people want to pretend that we hit 2000 and everyone knew what was right and wrong in terms of sexual mores... I was 10/11 in 2005. That's not how I remember it. So Lillian getting blackout drunk and a sober Westcliff having sex with her and her being like "weeee, what a fun dream, oops it was real, oh well"... and neither Lisa nor the editor, both of whom were presumably women my mom's age clocking that as rape? Tracks. Personally, I enjoy the scene as is--I know what it is, and I'm not saying it's morally correct or anything we should do in real life, but I enjoy it as a flawed, dated piece of literature. I also think people should be able to access both the original text and the corrected version. However, Lisa and her publisher have basically been attempting to delete this kind of content--and the scene in Secrets of Summer Night when Simon kisses Annabelle without asking (just kisses!) in the dark. She has no question of who is kissing her lol. It's not a crazy scene. Similarly, the scene where Kev "kidnaps" Win as a sort of marriage ritual thing (she's totally into it) in Seduce Me At Sunrise has been edited.
What I find interesting is that all of this sexual content has been edited... But I have yet to hear anything about the problematic, fetishizing shit surrounding Cam and Kev as heroes in The Hathaways being edited. I wouldn't know--I own paperbacks of their books, and I haven't been able to read more recent paperbacks or digital copies. I actually think that Mine Till Midnight and Seduce Me At Sunrise (especially Sunrise) are, aside from that fetishistic shit, super strong romances. Like, I won't lie about that. So idk. Why hasn't that been discussed?
To me... Idk, I think that romance as a genre has a wide range of sexual content, and it should, because the genre deals with the romantic and sexual fantasies of readers, which are WIDE RANGING. I think that dark romance should be allowed to exist, and if people want to read out their rape fantasies in a safe space, then have the fuck at it. I think that I should be able to read The Fires of Winter by Johanna Lindsey, in which the hero repeatedly rapes the heroine, and say "yeah, this is bad, but it's also a part of the sexual history of the genre and I do enjoy this book".
In terms of race, the genre has a whole other thing to reckon with, and imo the power dynamics of the genre being one that has been dominated by white women for decades make it different. We as women can pick and choose what we are comfortable with in terms of the sexual content of this genre, whereas people (primarily women) of color have not been able to safely read it, for the most part. So I'd like to see people like Lisa Kleypas reckon more with things like the Hello Stranger controversy, versus people complaining about a scene in It Happened One Autumn that sure, is now recognized as problematic, but at the time was very *normal*. I honestly don't really blame her for writing that scene in 2005--there are plenty of authors that write that shit today, and the only difference is that they slap on a TW for dubcon or noncon (I'm very pro trigger warnings in romance). Her writing the fetishistic shit in the Hathaways and Hello Stranger... is a different issue. And that's what I'd like to see the whoooooole genre focus on. I honestly feel like (my fellow) white people in romance focus so hard on what is "problematic" in terms of sexual content ("I don't like dubcon! I don't like dom daddies!") that they totally gloss over the shit that is done to make authors and readers of color feel fetishized and alienated on a daily basis in the genre. And then they beat the drum and go "romance is so maligned" lmao.
