I am not convinced that there wasn’t another way to beat Mina besides destroying magic, but Glossaryck basically tricked Star into thinking destroying magic was the only way (by showing her “her tapestry”), because he wanted magic destroyed for his own reasons. 

Likely because he just hates his kids and his job that much, because let’s be honest, Glossaryck is horrible enough for that to be his logic.
