Most jobs never, or almost never, give any homework, and a fairly large number don’t even permit overtime.

I would argue not framing school in such a way that most students could do the work during school hours is taking skills away from children. Time management is a far more relevant adult skill, and forcing children to think “there’ll be time for that after school - in fact there will have to be time for that after school, because school won’t let me be done in school no matter how well I manage my time.

It’s particularly problematic for people with disabilities. After using nearly every spoon possessed simply getting through school, the last thing someone with a disability needs is to spend more spoons trying to complete something that probably isn’t teaching them anything, and if anything making them unlearn what they did in the classroom (with snowballing effects).

While I never had a regime like an American teenager typically gets, I did get a secondary school that thought 1 1/2-3 hours a weeknight was no big deal. (They weren’t allowed to count weekends or Bank Holidays, which saved most students). Primary school had taught me not to need homework to learn because they only set spelling and reading as homework, reading was always free choice - they just wanted evidence some reading actually happened - and half the class learned spellings well just by looking at them in spelling class. This forced students to actually learn all other material in class. I didn’t realise at the time that other schools routinely set “age-appropriate” homework, or that my primary school was deemed unusually good at preparing students for rigourous studies. All I knew was that the primary school’s approach made sense for my learning, and the secondary school’s policy made things worse.

So when I found homework assignments unreasonable, I knew I was better off not doing them and taking the detention. Teachers also learned not to try making me do the homework in detention, since  Class marks in secondary school only considered tests, so there were never lasting consequences to my conduct (unless you consider the headaches induced by the occasional teacher’s assumption that a shouting match would help anything). My parents wouldn’t let me skip all non-exam-related homework, unfortunately, and being the unpopular bullied kid, nobody else followed my lead (either homework-skipping was accidental or it was part of a refusal to do any schoolwork at all).

There was a formal debate between me and a teacher in Year 10 about it (done to demonstrate to my classmates what a formal debate looked like, since I'd had a fair bit of "informal" practise on the topic by this point). The teacher failed to provide any substantive evidence for the issuing of homework, I produced quite a lot, and the class (perhaps unsurprisingly) sided with me. Equally unsurprisingly, homework requirements did not change, and neither did my approach.

Sixth form was at a different school, which required homework but at least made sure that it was manageable by limiting homework to 3 hours per week for maths, 2 hours for other examined subjects and 0 hours for anything else, in a context where nobody could take more than 4 examined classes and maths didn’t have to be an exam. This was healthier, but sometimes I'd do less than "my best" on a homework assignment because by this point I'd learned to determine how much effort was enough for me to learn the subject. There was understanding of this, because teachers were willing to react to how students learned... ...and some of my classmates were really struggling to process things because they'd got it into their heads that homework was the be-all and end-all.

That's what excessive homework teaches. It causes breakdowns. It causes school failure. It causes bad words and break-ups and dented dreams, misery where it isn't needed.

If there isn't enough time in school to teach what needs teaching, extend the school day. If that's not an option, cut requirements according to the time available. Setting significant homework primarily defeats the learning that is the obstensible point of homework, and carries its own price.
