Kate Tempest + Savages, July 4th 2017
The night of Kate Tempest's concert. Well it wasn't really her concert. As in she wasn’t the only artist to play. Actually she was the introductory artist. She shared the stage with Savages, a (post) punk rock band.
I was initially coming for K. Tempest. I had been waiting for this day for a very longtime, and with a tremendous amount of impatience. Let them eat chaos has accompanied me for months. The instrumentation of the album is stunning, so are the texts, and the concept helped the text unfold and tackle various themes, with various words and styles. Tempest's poetry moves me also because, unlike the usual rappers, she voices people, not just herself. Of course she's there in those texts, but she's there hidden, there to let the others shine, even when their stories, the stories she tells are complicated, and do not help portray characters you might like or might not. This is not the point anyway, the point is to see the way they're lost, the way they feel, the way they cope, and what happens to them.
In this album various influences are present - she's a poet after all, and of the sort that reads many books. The staging of the story and the idea of a storm changing things and generating an event, the way it is staged feels kind of similar to ancient greek and latin poetry. It's interesting as well to make a natural event like a storm create a disruption in the characters' life, especially when during the course of the album the planet's death is very present and denounced. What are we gonna do to wake up, she asks, well it's the storm, it's nature that woke you up, finally.
The album is very dear to me for various tracks among which Pictures on a screen, Europe is lost Grubby and Tunnel Vision are particularly important, for various reasons.
But aside from the texts which i can't analyze for lack of time, I have to throw out a few words on instrumentation. I recently re listened to Brand new ancient, who took a very jazzy and acoustic direction. Let them eat chaos is much more electronic, closer but still very different from Everybody Down's sounds. Indeed, the work on ambiances seems very important in this work. The atmosphere is rather dark, and even when it seems lighter, with Tunnel vision for instance, this feels more like a ride on a bike in the night under the city lights, than a diurnal experience. There's also a great work on paces and tempos. Depending obviously on each people and the state of mind they're in, the rhythm changes, but the drummer and drumming patterns are sometimes of those that will have you dance instantly, there's something in them which sometimes makes me think about some afro beats. This is because of the sounds and their roundness as well as the pattern. Finally, what i love the most is, say, the plumbery aspect of the instruments. The music is kind of intestinal, and well plumbery is the intestines of a city, isn't it. And as far as K. Tempest's record deals with intestinal movements such as population movements, fluxes, I find this a very clever choice. Clever is never a surprise with Tempest, though.
Anyway let's talk about the performance. I was right in front of the stage, in the Cité de la Musique. The drummer, with whom I had the chance and honor to exchance a few (silly because I was way too grateful and excited) words at the end of the show, was really drumming his life in the show. Not hidden with a full set of acoustic drums, he probably also benefitted from the fact that he was more visible, and had maybe more space. We could hear him cue things to his partners, which is something I actually like – sort of witnessing the music being made, tight in the present. A few arrangements were made : changing some segments of instrumentals, rapping just in silence during Europe is Lost and get back to the spoken word from which she started, make the words clack by themselves.
K. Tempest is giving a lot on stage. If you've already seen interviews of her, I watched some to compare and while she speaks and has a lovely and appeased face during conversations, on stage performing Let Them Eat Chaos her eyes are cold and filled with rage. Well rage is all over the album, so this is totally coherent. She's just rapping and here with us, in the moment, delivering everything and this, though with rage, she did that with easiness, too. The delivery is as angry as it is fluid, like a ballad during which she shoots stuff with a machine gun.
Gratefulness and awe were the feelings I was left with when she left. Grateful because as you may have understood from now this record touched me deep. Awe, because this is the kind of performance you don't see everyday. Thank you, Kate Tempest. To you, and to all your musicians.
And yet, after she was gone, a band I had barely listened to but to not be lost during the concert (a matter of respect for the artists) arrived and lit the room up. You don’t see what you see with Savages on stage everyday either. Well obviously K. Tempest had already prepared the crowd well and the heat was already present, but the energy she elicited had to be turned and released on a very different level because the musical genre was so different. And Savages nailed that conversion, really. I guess most people came to see them as well and let themselves go when they arrived. And as I was literally before the stage, I don't really know what happened in the crowd. I only know that, on the upper levels, where people could seat, there was an old lady reading the newspaper during the shows. And this is gold.
Anyway, as curious as I was, not expecting anything, I was filled with joy. It's strange because on stage, the bass player spent the show eyes closed, the guitarist wasn't moving that much, the drummer, Fay Milton, was full of energy but, since she's a drummer, was hidden behind her drums. She was great though. I mean they all were, musically it was qualitative. My point is rather that the energy came mostly from Jennhy Beth, the singer [she happens to have tumblr, so that’s where the link will take you, reader!]. If wonder if she plays tennis in her life, because whenever she interacted with the drummer, she looked like she was praticing her forehand and backhand. Which was very entertaining.
The band played their last LP in date, Adore, which is an LP that I found explored various currents of rock music, from a very lousy country/marilyn mansonnish with a touch of Bowie track Adore, to classic rock songs, and punk, with tracks like Surrender or Sad Person.
Know how I felt. Ah. First things first, I have to have you remember that I almost listened to them for the first time. It is not something new for me, sometimes when the show’s price is cheap or when the artists are playing at the beginning of concerts, I like going there without knowing much. You have a different relationship with the music this way, and I feel more in the present, more open somehow to what's going on. Because you cannot put yourself and the personal relation with the music you have, you're just here with what the artists give and the crowd's energy. It's a nice experience too, and in the case of Savages, certainly a thing you can do, because a show there is. A connection there was. You can experience it in a way that is introspective like the bass player Ayse Hassan, cerebral like Gemma Thompson the guitarist, energetically enjoying yourself in your corner like Fay Milton, or spread yourself and give all your energy to the exterior, be all over the place like Jehnny Beth.
I experienced something strange, though. Jehnny Beth is a knot, a node, un noeud (because why not french this up). Really. Sometimes I try to remember and it feels itchy. The voice, great and powerful but also veiled, strident, while deep. Singing punk music in a suit with high heels, owning the place yet always demanding for more to the crowd, try to grasp and feel it. Looking at people in their eyes, or ignoring them completely when they're annoying like the crazy guy who was praying the sun and screaming Savaaaaaaaaages throughout the show. Massive strength palpable, massive confidence too, massive questions as well. Presence in the present, governing the boat as well. This is the part when the text becomes awkward because I still haven't put the finger on what this was. Musically I'm a very eclectic person and it is the first time the itch like this happens. I take it to be a good thing. New experiences are always to be welcome, and I do believe that feeling itchy when listening to a punk/post punk is a good sign that the music is doing the job. It's suppose to destabilize you, and the melodies and way her voice was always poised and following a somewhat coherent but deconstructed pattern stroke me. I loved it. In terms of pure sounds there is nothing new since it's composed with drums bass guitar and voice, but there's still something which I think is innovative. I'm just not sure what yet.
Anyway, this was a very interesting and intense night, I really look forward to seeing Kate Tempest again, as well as Savages, and to hear their next works and the direction they decide to take. Kate Tempest's project touches deep my heart and mind (not that those are actually separated), and Savages, I'll have to dig more into the project to really grasp what's going on, but for sure something happened. And for sure I entered and left the concert room with hell of a smile.
Either way, thank you both for what you gave us and I during that night. Thanks a lot.
EJS.
