so what is it about dragonglass that makes wights and Others susceptible to it, anyway? is it anything chemical bc if so just about any feldspar or granite would do the trick, and that’s like 40% of the Earth’s crust. Can dragonglass be manufactured? It certainly looked like the smiths at Winterfell were remelting and casting obsidian, which you could probably do with late-medieval technology (i.e. forges could be hot enough for that), so does that mean they could also melt granite or feldspar and have dragonglass that’s just as good as naturally-formed stuff?
ofc medieval smiths and geologists, such as they were, probably didn’t understand that obsidian is chemically the same stuff as other felsic rocks, but certainly they would’ve noticed that these same rocks all appear in the same areas and drawn conclusions, no? so in theory, Sam at the Citadel with access to the time period’s most advanced geologic knowledge and apparent penchant for experimentation probably would’ve figured out that you could just melt and cast granite or feldspar and that if it cooled quickly enough it’d form dragonglass, yes? which means that the entire plot thread with “we need to find dragonglass” falls apart pretty quick since feldspar, granite, pumice, quartz, and other felsic rocks are fucking everywhere
idk I’m probably picking too many nits out of a story that was definitely not written by a geologist, but it does inspire some ideas for post-S6, pre-S7 fanfic wherein Jon doesn’t ever need to meet with Daenerys to secure Dragonstone’s obsidian
