Antlermoss takes Bluekit and finds a safe path down to the bottom of the cliff, finding a safe place for her to hide before nervously looking for any other survivors.

He hears loud, wet coughing, rushing to the sound and finding Moonstar laying on the ground in a pool of his own blood. Calling out, he rushes to his side in a panic.

Racking his brain trying to think of what to do to save his leader, he barely notices the clan's deputy, Meadowtooth, laying dead nearby. Moonstar coughs again before speaking, spitting up more blood as he does.

"I leave things to you Antlermoss"

"NO! I can still-" Antlermoss stumbles for his words as Moonstar shakes his head sadly and continues

"Take the Survivors to the old camp," he starts, his voice weak and clearly strained from the effort, "from before we moved inland"

Antlermoss listens tearfully, nodding his head in confirmation to his leader's final request

Moonstar smiles weakly "You'll do great things..." he begins to trail off and his eyes close, his last words scarcely above a whisper "Antlerstar"

Antlermoss presses his nose tearfully to Moonstar's forehead, tears silently running down his cheek fur. He'll never be the leader Moonstar was, starclan above he's not ready to be a leader at all! But Bluekit needs him now, if there's any other survivors, they need him too.

He buries Moonstar alone, returning to Bluekit and nudging her awake to leave. Antlermoss leads her away from the clan that she knew, towards the sea at the other side of the territory

Homestuck: Beyond Canon Upd8 for July 23, 2024

Alright! We've got a new Upd8, and apparently it's a doozy! As usual, we'll start with the news post first!

Oh! There's a vod of the SAHcon panel. Might have to look that up.

James mentions a "big flash," and wants to give the team a break before either they start work on it or they drop it (wasn't sure here). I'm all for this. I don't want this team to burn out. Apparently there's progress on the plush, but James isn't telling us yet because it might not make it into the final version. Other than that, it's just this upd8. They're planning on more like it, so this won't be the only one of this style.

And what is this style?

It's a freakin' visual novel is what!

Looking at the options we have some basic VN selections, including options for skipping text. We have a History panel, which hopefully will allow us to go back to prior choices. We can also save and load. We don't have an option for full screen, so that's a little frustrating. But otherwise, away we go!

Oh man! Tavros got sucked into this too? Or is this some sort of construct or projection?

Oh wow. Vriska's trying to reconcile and every time she gets a prompt, she comes up with something else awful she did to him. I'd say we could be here a while, but I'm pretty sure she's going to lose patience soon.

"Hours later, but not many." Or we do that XD

Vriska doesn't get that the patterns that lead her here are the problem. She doesn't understand that being "an expert on this revenge thing," is part of the problem. The problem was that she was always trying to force Tavros to conform to some image of strength she had for him in her head, and used only the methods that she thought made her strong. That is, when she wasn't just losing her patience and doing something out of spite and anger.

Just as she thought she made things square with him before, she's not listening to him now. She's still never gotten that her failure to help Tavros wasn't Tavros's fault. It's always been her fault for not trying to understand who Tavros was and what he needed. By trying to help Tavros get revenge on her, she's just repeating the pattern again.

"Before I screw your life up," wow, I think she might have just had a genuine realization there! That's what she needs, though she still needs to understand why. She needs to understand why she did it, and why it caused Tavros so much suffering.

"Kill me." Oh wow. We've literally been exactly here before. How can she not realize that it didn't work then, and it's not going to work now!

"TAVROS: nO, i LOVE TO RUN AND, i DO NOT PLAN ON STOPPING, aNY TIME SOON,"

Ouch.

"Thief: Do the right thing."

Oh this is so not going to be the right thing.

Wow. She looks way too happy to have gotten Tavros to kill her. She is so not going to be happy when this almost certainly doesn't turn out to have worked.

Yep! That sure looks like we're back where we started! Respawn time!

Sorry Davepeta, you can't help but make that innuendo sexual. It is your nature. Well half your nature.

Oh wow! When they said, Year 2, they weren't depicting a second point in the time frame. Vriska has been at this for over a year! "welcome to hell"

Whatever problems Dave and Nepeta respectively had, they just can't relate to the twisted mindset Vriska adopted to survive on Alternia.

"purrppets and then theres pawppet33rs" That one took me a while.

I think Davepeta just admitted that both Dave and Nepeta prefer to follow and let someone else be in control of things. No wonder Dave put up with so much of Jade's constant desires to form a stable polycule. I think I'll have some more to say about this later. Might even put it in a separate post.

Oh! Well that's that I guess! Might as well talk about this "panel" then.

So let's start with this. I do not believe in "leaders" and "followers". I think that's such a false dichotomy, that it barely deserves commentary. I think at best you can say that a person would be more likely to take charge, follow along, do there own thing, or disengage under sociologically normal circumstances. Already, that's four potential responses verse two, and these only apply under each person's "normal."

But even if we break it down to just "leaders" and "followers", Homestuck has already broken that dichotomy plenty of times. Take our beloved nub horned ball of of anger. Karkat presents at the beginning of Act 5 as a "leader." He was even somewhat good at it by Vriska's own admission. But Karkat was never happy as a "leader." He was doing it because he felt he had to. Being an exceptional bloodthirsty Troll warrior wasn't going to be good enough for him to avoid getting culled. He needed power, fear, and respect. He needed to be a "leader."

But once everything was over and he was given the chance to relax, he abandoned the role and was all the more happier for it. Pre Game Over, he wasn't particularly happy but he seemed less miserable than he did in game. And most of his anxiety revolved around not knowing where he stood with Dave and Terezi. Post Game Over he seems to have practically thrived. Letting Vriska, Rose, and Terezi handle all the planning and organization allowed him to finally enjoy life for once.

But now on Candy Earth C, he's a "leader" again. While he seems to be delegating a lot to Meenah, he's still the one everyone looks to. And while I can't say our beloved Knight of Blood is thriving, he's definitely much more comfortable as a "leader" now.

So all of that being true, has HSBC made any case for any character being a "leader" or "follower"?

But let's assume the premise and say Davepeta is correct. I think Nepeta can be said to be a "follower" in such a dichotomy. Even when it upset her, she still went along with Equius's wishes. But I would still stress she didn't exactly get a lot of screen time. We never got to know how Nepeta might have developed as a character over a full Homestuck run.

But what about Dave? Does Homestuck depict Dave as a "follower"? We definitely have plenty of examples of Dave going along with the plans and wishes of others. But I feel like we have far more examples of him taking initiative, doing his own thing, or even refusing to go along with a plan. Dave didn't want to play SBURB. Dave ignored Jade's advice to let the Crow hatch the egg. While he followed Terezi's plan, he eventually needed a break and basically broke with her after they finished the time loop. When Jade needed help, he acted on his own to get her situated in the game. He didn't like Rose's plan and refused to let her be the one to sacrifice herself when it seemed like that was the only option. He refuses to go along with Karkat's plans to try and setup quadrants with Terezi. In Game Over, he jumps into the fray to try and placate and then fend off Jack and PM. In Collide he takes the lead roll in the Strife at several points, including being the one to land the killing blow. Even Davepeta, as Vriska points out, was the one that secured victory against Lord English.

I think at most, what can be said is that normally Dave prefers to go with the flow. As he puts it, "maybe id rather just be like the dave of guy." This is one of those places where again, I have to ask if Homestuck has ever depicted a "leader/follower" dichotomy. Dave really seems happiest when he's just being Dave doing Dave things. Given a fully informed choice, Dave might have done everything he could have to avoid the SBURB session taking place. He stayed on the sidelines as things went to shit on Earth C, even as Karkat was looking to him for help. I just don't see Dave as a "follower."

That doesn't mean he has any angle to relate to Vriska. But for being an enlightened Sprite^2, I don't think Davepeta's take is a good one.

Devotion - Chapter 7: "Started Young"

Dev finds an old friend, who apparently had spent the entirety of the war in a battle on another plane of existence with himself… or rather, eight other versions of himself.

Dev sensed him. Finally, that faded divine courage came into his senses and he whirled around and was running.

"There you are!" He nearly slid across the ground as he found the kid, dropping to one knee in front of him as he held his face and checked him for injuries on instinct. "Where have you been?! Are you alright? There's so much dark residue on you!"

The kid, the hero and spirit of the Four Sword, barked out a slightly strained laugh. "I don't even know, Dev. I'm so, so confused."

Dev grew concerned before it hit him. He let out a small noise of relief. "The timelines merged, kid," he said gently, and the kid startled.

"They what? There was multiple?!"

"Three, and you remember how I told you there was a spirit that inhabited my sword before me?" The kid nodded. "She's back because she didn't die in the other timelines."

The kid's jaw dropped. "IS THAT WHY I'VE SPENT THE LAST —HOWEVER LONG FIGHTING EIGHT OTHER VERSIONS OF MYSELF?!“

Dev winced. "Probably."

He stared at him. "What the—Okay. Okay this is fine. Just..." he held his 'breath' and Dev watched him slowly calm down. "Right," the kid looked at him again, "what did I miss?

"Want to come meet the new hero?" Dev asked. "We just ended a war."

"You what."

"His name is Link, so we really need to get you a nickname, kid."

"I—Fine."

"Rainbow? Prism? Spectrum?"

"Do not call me Rainbow," he threatened. "Spectrum is fine."

"Great."

A beat passed.

"I cannot believe you fought a war without me."

"There it is."

Dev was leading Spectrum to meet Link, only to see a dauntingly familiar portal and Link disappearing through it.

It shut almost the moment Dev saw it. It took everything in Dev to trust that his Sprite was right, that it was okay, that it'd be fine.

"What was that?" Spectrum questioned.

"That... That was a portal," Dev said a bit shakily. "A temporal one, time magic. It... I've seen it before, it either takes the hero, returns them, or brings monsters. Want to go hunt some oddly strong monsters?"

Spectrum blinked and stared at him. "That's an option? Absolutely."

Soon enough, a couple years later, Link returned and he had a knowing look in his eyes when he came back. He grinned when he met Spectrum. A few days later, he'd made a passing comment on Dev being a hero when they were alone.

"I'm no hero." Dev chuckled when Link said it.

"Really?" Link challenged, looking over at him. "Labyrnna, Holodrum, Hytopia? None of those rings a bell?"

Dev hummed slightly. "Oh, they ring bells." He stood up, and he saw Link raise an eyebrow with a bit more gall than Dev was used to from him. "Yes, a very, very long time ago, I was a hero. I was born Hylian, called to save the world, got a sword, and a triangle on the back of my hand. Then I killed the incarnate of evil, and I did it again. Yes, once upon a time, I was a hero. But I'm not a hero anymore."

"Not anymore?" Link prodded, seemingly a bit confused.

Dev just laughed softly. "Kit, I'm millennia old. I've seen Hyrule rise to its golden age, fall into decay, and it is still trying to rebuild itself. I've watched friends and family live, die, and be born again. My time as a hero ended the moment I became a spirit. That doesn't mean I'll stand aside, I still fight, but I am here to protect and guide you." He tapped Link's chest. "You, and other kids like Mask and Tune. Heroes who are still heroes, who have lives to live. I. Am. No. Hero. And by the mercy of the goddesses, I never will be again."

Link caught his wrist. "Dev, you're a hero to me. And to all of Hyrule."

"Let me live my retirement in peace," Dev teased lightly. "You may be a little lion with all that energy, pride, and strength to protect those you love, but let me just be a guide and helper, not a hero. I did my time."

Link stared at him and there was sadness in his eyes. "Okay," he said softly, letting go of his wrist. "Yeah, okay."

Link died of old age. Dev was a face amongst the masses and Spectrum tugged his arm to lead them from the funeral.

Fi wanted to go dormant, so Dev let her. He refused to do the same.

He and Spectrum went out to explore, slaying monsters and forging something new, building magical weapons and jewelry then Dev ended up having to carry.

They went out to other countries, Dev knew he'd sense the birth of the next hero, Fi said they would, and they explored the far reaches of the world.

Thousands of years passed, and they came back just in time.

There was no hero in this cycle. Well, there was, but...

A six-year-old child tugged his sleeve. "Can I go home now?"

A great calamity was about to befall Hyrule and though there were guardians and a princess with Zelda's sealing power learned and ready, the hero was a tiny child.

He and Spectrum shared a look.

"Link?" Dev knelt by the boy. "Thank you so much for meeting us. Go home now, we just wanted to say hi." The parents were crying, they knew the fate their son had been called to, but Dev wasn't about to let a six-year-old fight this battle.

Little Link lit up and ran back to his parents. Fi murmured to Dev about it, but they had long since handled any differences in their methods a while ago.

"I'll do it," Spectrum said as they headed toward the castle.

"You'll have to. Have fun," Dev said as he took Spectrum's hand and transformed.

Spectrum went to the castle and the guards let him through. A green and blue tunic, bright red hair, a violet sash around his waist and matching ribbon in his hair to hold the long locks back, Spectrum marched up to the throne room and he knelt in the center of the room.

In the end, it was a quick and simple fight. Over before it was finished.

Dev disagreed with the decision to just seal the darkness; he would have much rather destroyed it.

Spectrum agreed, but neither were allowed back into the castle after the battle.

Little Link grew up happily, not a single other calling to adventure took place. Dev and Spectrum made sure of that.

Ten thousand years passed before the next one happened.

Dev had let Fi win for the past five thousand years. While Spectrum went off and did goddesses know what, Fi and Dev fell dormant within the Korok Forest beneath the protection of the Great Deku Tree.

He roused when a presence approached and was instantly aware of the thick darkness in the air. It was coming back and...

The boy who drew him was no older than twelve. He stopped Fi from even testing the boy, he saw the fear but also clear determination, not in an arrogant way, but this boy had come here, gotten through the Lost Woods, and was trying to draw the sword because he had to. Dev could see it, Fi faltered near immediately and they went willingly.

"He looks like you," Fi said. "You came to me just like that, scared, but determined. I knew you wouldn't take no for an answer, not because you wanted to wield me, but because you knew you had to."

Dev had made a slightly affirming sound. This kid already had the weight of the world on his shoulders... and Dev had every intention of lightening that load as much as he could.

"You're not bad," Dev said after Link beat a guard in a fight and was left to train alone. Link didn't talk and Dev was invisible to everyone but his wielder. "Incredible for your age, actually."

He stood beside Link, who gave him a curious look as he pulled out a fire rod and held it like a sword.

"Copy my moves," he told him. Link nodded and Dev guided him through battle techniques long forgotten to the people of Hyrule. He taught him how to execute a spin attack, how to do a downward thrust, and many other things. He taught him to fight with precision.

Link was a natural, a born fighter, and after a point, Dev started teaching him other things.

The boy was isolated from everyone, partially but not wholly by his own choice. The princess whom he had to protect outright hated him, then the champions who he was meant to fight alongside were distant from the boy that Dev got to know. Mipha was closest, and Daruk tried, but Revali drove Link deeper into his corner purposely and Urbosa did it accidentally due to her protectiveness over Zelda.

Dev would sit with Link in his quarters, coaching him through peaceful things. He taught him to knit and to sew. He taught him how to crochet too, then how to dye wool. He taught him how to cook in the kitchens, and how to cook over a campfire. He took Link out to the forests one night and taught him how to forage and make food good for eating. He taught the twelve-year-old boy how to read, horrifying himself with the knowledge that literacy and education wasn't the standard even in the most rural parts of Hyrule anymore.

Link opened up to him.

He'd grin and giggle and even sometimes quietly ask questions or make an almost sassy comment. Dev was determined to get the kid out of his shell just a bit more.

Then it struck. After accompanying the princess to the base of Mount Lanayru and to as far as an underaged individual could go, after coming down to the base of the mountain, and then the sky lit up red.

Not a day later, in the twilight before dawn, Dev was feeling his magic drain to a point it had only once before.

He poured his magic into Link, into Fi, the former managing to stand up again and the latter giving her all to keep him alive. Even for all that, even after destroying dozens of guardians, Link couldn't do it.

The Master Sword chipped, it cracked, and Link couldn't quite stand back up.

The power of the Triforce saved him from immediate death. Fi and Dev panicked, and they had Zelda put Link in the Shrine of Resurrection.

They lasted long enough for Zelda to ask them to give Link the memory of her leaving them in the forest. After that, it all faded and for the second time, Dev was forced into dormancy as he had drained himself completely just to keep one boy alive. Something he had done thousands of years ago... and had failed.

The covered hair was sort of expected from an an older woman and I've seen Jewish head coverings that look sort of similar, but don't take my word for it.

The left outfit is more youthful and pretty fancy, probably worn on special occasion.

Here are some more looks without the sleeveless керсетка (kersetka). I can kinda see Portia wearing the right one minus the headdress maybe???? I love the collar on the lady to the left, but I don't think I've ever seen another illustration of women's вишиванка (vyshyvanka) with a collar like that. (Also forgive my terrible cropping, my phone wouldn't let me save it)

I feel like the coat, which was apparently a very fashionable look judging from many pics I've seen, would look great on him and you could still keep an element of his character design.

Look at these fellas and their cool coats and fancy embroidered shirts (and lovely moustaches. Love em. But not on Julian asgsgsgsg).

I had a look at the sprites of young Ilya and Pasha and he seems to be wearing a Russian kosovorotka with the off-center fastening (Ukrainian vyshyvanka arr always fastened in the center, often tied together with strings at the neck leaving a gap down the middle). The dress Pasha is wearing is just...what all cute children wear in games lol.

I'm not an expert at all on my own culture, because I, sadly, only started feeling a real connection to it once I emigrated, but I hope this was at least in some way insightful (or and not too much).

Just finished Hiveswap Act 2, here are some thoughts.

The art and the music are as great as they were before, all the sprite work is good, character portraits in the Trial section are very expressive, especially Joey’s and Stelsa’s, as it should be I guess. I love all variations of Ticket to Ride (Rusty is good, Trial Variation is a pure bop and it doesn’t get worse even after all the time you have to spend in the teal-jade car). Fight of the Bumblebee is such a James Roach track with beatboxing and shit, I absolutely adore his style of music. The atmosphere made by a change in sound after you reach purplebloods car is chilling, I was so uncomfortably on edge the entire time even though nothing actually was happening until the last moment.

Joey was still Joey, love her, but I didn’t really like Xefros before, and Act 2 finally made me care for him. He had a lot of development for such a short period of time, and actually started thinking about something other than Dammek. Even though he obviously still has his whole life shaped by Dammek’s ideas, it’s a progress, and he is competent enough on his own to help Joey with Alternia context when she needs it. I like his relationship with Joey too, he cares so much for her already and it’s very wholesome.

Speaking of Dammek, I’ve waited for too long and invented his personality for myself at this point, so I absolutely loved all mentions of him here, nothing matched the level of excitement I had when he was mentioned by Xefros, and especially Chixie, I remember his cameo in her Friendsim route and I loved it ever since I saw it. I reached a point where I’ll like this guy no matter what writers have planned for him, if anything. He can be a pure manipulative asshole, which is implied multiple times, and I’ll like him anyway exactly because he’s such an unapologetic garbage boy stink man. I live for this guy partying with violetbloods, not only he’s a revolutionary Troll Green Day guy, he also apparently lived his best life on Alternia, what a dude.

I really wanted to like troll train, but it was just kinda okay. Intro to the game is either very rushed or just empty, four gorgeous screens of nothing happening in a row is a bit. Yeah. I was excited about the Trial mini game, but teal-jade car ended up being tedious as fuck, and I liked most of the characters there in Friendsim, none of them saved it for me. I feel like most of them were there for the sake of it. Chixie was cool, but I really don’t know how I feel about her arguing with Xefros over Dammek, I liked her the most in Friendsim and that’s what we get here. Nothing happened with bronzes and burgundies, though I liked that Joey just Really Didn’t Like Vikare because he’s just Jake at his worst and it’s acknowledged by the writers. Most jades are just bitches who have nothing to do with anything (looking at you, Daraya and Lanque, why were they even there). Half of dialogue for Stelsa and Tyzias is about their relationship, not very exctiting tbh. Jades were okay, didn’t care much for golds and olives since none of them played any interesting part (Boldir was Just There the entire time and I thought she’s supposed to be relevant, Azdaja and Konyyl were discussing their relationship I also didn’t care about), ceruleans were okay (Elwurd was great, I felt Effort lol, Mallek was a bit underwhelming), indigos section is the most boring game of pointless fetch quest I’ve ever played with no reward or feeling of anything being accomplished. Clowns were clowns, Marvus’ dialogue was okay, didn’t expect anyone to die but someone did, well then.

I finished Act 2 in seven hours, and to be honest, literally nothing happened. I've waited for this for three years at this point, it's kinda disappointing that even Friendsim itself had more going on when I didn't give a single shit about any of the characters in it. Now I do, characters I liked were There because of course you can’t just give them all screentime, but still. I could've been happy with more Hiveswap if there was any interesting content in it, but instead it's just a ton of characters that need time to speak about literally nothing and/or quadrants again, and relationship talk in such amounts was boring to me back when Homestuck was still ongoing in 2016.

I don't really hate Act 2, but in the end I don't really care for it either, and I was very excited to play after all the waiting.

Hoooh boy you're definitely not gonna be prepared for what Nonny and the Schneidermann's are wearing then, because Jesus Christ me and my friend truly went "the only people who would love you are the ones with more or equally atrocious fashion styles" with that one out of the way, let's start tame with Y/N because I forgot a key characteristic of hers :)

-Nothing much to say about Y/N, Beige stop that reveals her midriff and light blue shorts, BIG RED CLOWNSHOES WITH HEELS, also the thing I forgot was that she literally does not have a face and has to manually apply waterproof makeup so that she looks like a normal person everyday. The game starts off with her make up routine actually lmao I think it wasn't much of a problem for her, because most of her face was hidden thanks to her bangs anyway, but she still enjoys doing it

-Here comes our favourite Hackerman meow meow, so like, his outfits that I described before? Still pretty accurate, Mans got Black hoodie, though I think he has grey sweatpants instead of black pants, oh and also he's got BIG PINK BALLERINA SHOES WHOSE STRAPS GO O N T O P OF HIS SWEATPANTS AND END AT HIS LOWER THIGHS O_O I didn't describe them last time, partly because I totally forgot he had them until I saw his traditional character sheet and partly because I didn't see them in the game, since his sprite cuts off right above where the shoe straps end. So yeah, do with that information what you will. Also he had a straight up Lenny face at first, no eyecolor, just ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). Also also he wasn't 7 feet 8, he was 9' 2" O_O .

Extra quotes we wrote on his sheet: "giiirl, get back inda BASEMENT" "Are u lost, babeygrill?" "He's got NO lips!" "He's never gonna get a kiss kiss very UGLY!" "No kiss for him"

He's also smoking a red vape in the pic and has a gold chocker

Schneidermann, black fluffy hair that apparently also covering his face because we didn't draw him one either (rip Schneidermann face enjoyers) mirroring his cousins general outfit, except we can actually see the divide between his legs with the red loose pants he's wearing, rainbow long sleeved shirt, I think he was also supposed to have the ridiculous shoulder spikes but they look more like a high collared cape that's reaaaaaaaally short instead, 1 gold bracelet on each of his wrists and smoking a golden vape too, wears the other part of the mismatched shoe pair. He's also holding a banana and a hotdog (I think it's a hotdog at least) also wears a silver choker

Btw if you're wondering what the hell is up with the Schneidermann shoes, it's inspired by another thing we had to do in German period, be basically got a story from a newspaper that we had to retell in another way, the story we got was "Asian man steals peoples left shoes" like, specifically only the left one, which reminds me that Kim Hojungseo would be shoe thief considering that we drew a shit ton of shoes on his sheet lmao.

Extra writing on Hojungseo's sheet: "I only listen to REAL music!" "Save the fucking turtles b-baka! ùwú" "how can mirrors be real, when our eyes aren't?" "Crying on the inside"

I think I'll probably yassify part of their designs, not too much tho, oughta stay true to their OG vibe after all 😔✊ also this felt like a My Immortal chapter with these lengthy character descriptions, still kinda feel that I don't do em justice, they rlly are the kinda character designs that you simply need to ✨experience✨for yourself to truly understand.
