introduction to Adonis (ft. Evgenia)
His only connection to Adonis of Greek mythology is the name, as this Adonis’ reflection is something even Freddy Krueger fears. Spyridon-Adonis Georgiadis is the embodiment of an airhead too caught up in the theoretic bullshit of Academia. I am certain the Department of History and Archaeology of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens has a lot to offer, but this bloke graduated from it with a selective memory.
Before his... ugh.... career in right wing politics he was selling books in a small Greek channel very aggressively but also in a meme-worthy way (2 minutes of this video will convince you, even if you don’t speak Greek). His telemarketing tactics is one of the reasons nobody in the country can take him seriously. The other reasons mainly have to do with his idiocy.

September 2007 was a very sad month in the Greek history, as he was elected a Member of the Greek parliament. Today he is um... the Vice-President of our governing party. *sobs*
He prefers speaking in katharevousa for of Greek (not even my grandparents used it) and advocates the use of the polytonic system for writing the Greek language (this system hasn’t been used in decades).
Some of my Greek followers may be surprised to learn he has a magazine, where the texts are written in the polytonic system. The magazine is called Elliniki Agogi (Greek Upbringing) and, while I haven’t touched it, I bet its contents are only relatable and enjoyable to the ancient slippery stairs leading to the Parthenon.

He has been accused of "troubling remarks about Jews and his public promotion of an anti-Semitic book by a pro-claimed anti-semite". Adonis issued a public apology, which, in his case, I am not sure how much hope can give us.
He tried to be a writer with the historical novel Theodora Phranza: or, the Fall of Constantinople. It turns out he had plagiarized a 19th-century English book by John Mason Neale. As the clown that he is, Adonis said he had never hidden he had adapted a previous work.
Regarding the Athens Polytechnic Uprising, he has claimed that "there was no one dead inside the Polytechnic School, not a single one!” Can we send him back to the University of Athens , please? If they refuse to re-educate him, at least they will chase him around the campus and it will be fun for the rest of us.
Our meme material of a person had also sold some “nanotechnological jackets” with “healing effects”.
These are just SOME of the weird stuff he has done. I don’t want to mention all the bs he has said while in politics cause I don’t want to become more depressed.
One a more serious note - please don’t run away from this post yet! - I am really saddened by his case. He and his wife, Evgenia Manolidou, are an example of how “educated” people can be extremely stupid. Look at Adonis, with so much knowledge of ancient Greece (which, on its own, I can’t condemn) and his tries for wider reach of the ancient Greek language, customs and songs. He still has spread so much misinformation - which can also affect minorities in the country negatively!
Evgenia Manolidou is a classical music composer and conductor. She studied in Juilliard School of New York. She has a classy demeanor, she is EXTREMELY talented and has an in depth knowledge of culture and music. She shares her passion for ancient Greece with Adonis. For example, she has composed songs inspired by ancient Greek myths and the Orphic Hymns. She has worked with big names, wrote tracks for documentaries and even composed tracks for the Beijing Olympics! This paragraph is seriously downplaying her abilities but I don't have much space.

HOWEVER, these last years she has also been a presenter and judge in various Greek TV shows. She first became famous from presenting The Moment of Truth (if you know the show, you know how trashy it is). She is connected to many trashy moments in Greek TV. Plus, she is married to Adonis!

I am looking at their beautiful ancient “Kalanda” video in ancient Greek but I can’t enjoy it as much as I’d like to because the two people producing it are idiots (Evgenia not so much, but still)! Clearly, the couple has things to offer but we must be careful when stumbling upon their work.
To end in a positive tone, here is the Kalanda with ancient Greek, English and Spanish subs. (Link) Greek children sing. It was sang by children in the celebrations for Apollo in the time we now celebrate Christmas. But the lyrics of the song and the circumstances where it was sung remind very much of our modern Kalanda.
