Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger Episode 3 Review
Welcome back everyone! Since I am taking proper precautions to ensure I don’t lose this review, I am 100% willing to make this a tl;dr review! I hope you enjoy it! As usual please feel free to sound off in comments and reblogs. Even if I don’t reply, I do promise I am reading all of the feedback I am getting, and I am taking your thoughts into account when directing the future of these reviews.
So our episode begins with Champ going to the bathr- oh, wait. That’s just how he sleeps. False alarm. Anyway, we are then treated to the always welcome sight of someone beating on Lucky when the Red Ranger tries to wake him. One good moment is then followed by another as we are finally introduced to the Rebellion Commander, Xiao Longbao. I am a fan of the characters Hiroshi Kamiya voices, but I am used to him sounding both young and serious (though I have heard him play a surprisingly wacky character in the first episode of Noragami) so I was skeptical that he would be playing the goofy-grandpa type.
My skepticism was bad and I should feel bad. And I did, but I was quickly cheered up by Kamiya’s excellent and delightfully bonkers performance as Xiao, who was every bit as entertaining as I hoped. For those of you wondering about what kind of character he is, picture the Judge from Phoenix Wright. A character who is in a position of authority, and who does show off that he deserves it, but is easily distracted and prone to silly moments. While I am wary that his antics in the face of serious situations may prove to get annoying at a certain point, we have still yet to reach that point.
So it seems that Xiao has been picked up by our team of heroes, and it is implied that he was out collecting Kyu Tama, as he unloads a great big mess of them on our team. We also finally get an acknowledgement that there is more to the Kyu Tama than we currently know, with Xiao stating that he will tell the team about that later. While that seems lazy, it’s enough to stem my usual whining about how little we know about the Kyu Tama for this week. At episode 3 of 48-50, where they are still introducing characters and concepts, I can be satisfied with an “It’s coming, calm down, Garrett!”
So after learning more interesting tidbits (like the fact that Balance is not actually a robot), we learn some more about the universe our story is set in, that each planet is given life from Planetium, and that Jark Matter is forcefully harvesting it from each planet it conquers. The process is not gentle, and causes the planet to explode. Something it looks like Hammy has experience with. And so, instead of having Lucky run off and annoy Garrett again, we have Xiao send the team to a nearby planet on the brink of exploding, where we meet our eighth Kyuranger, the highly anticipated Scorpio Orange: Stinger.
What can I say about this guy that doesn’t sound like the noises Champ was making at the beginning of the episode? Let’s start positive! Not only is his suit awesome, but his fighting style is impressive too using a cool blend of martial arts and his rather good-looking CGI tail. It’s clear that every fight he’s going to be a part of is going to be a treat. Not only that, but as someone who loves polearms, I was very giddy to discover that his Kyu Spear is going to look like an actual spear as opposed to the toy, and Stinger uses it to great effect. Finally, our first ever Scorpion zord, the Scorpio Voyager makes its debut this week, and boy is it awesome. Using both claws and laser-tail, it was really awesome to see it fight individually.
Now for the bad bits about Stinger. He represents every Kamen Rider character I hate. Chase (in his first few episodes anyway, before he very quickly became my favorite character), Makoto, and Taiga all have one thing in common with Stinger: they exist to belligerently and aggressively attack the heroes even though they should be on the same side. Why? None of your business, that’s why! You’ll just have to keep watching to find out, and hope you get a satisfying answer before the character’s infuriating inability to compromise causes you to quit the show.
*ahem* Sorry, that
sounded awfully specific, didn’t it? Anyway, we don’t get much about Stinger outside of that, but there are hints that there is a great character hiding beneath the angsty Edgelord who probably mains Reaper in Overwatch. He does express a desire to “atone for a crime” he may or may not have committed, but at the same time, he doesn’t feel he needs to answer to Champ. This is barely a sentence in the show, but it is intriguing enough that I am dying to find out what the story behind that is, just as long as I don’t have to wait too long to hear it. And as a side note, Stinger is similar to Chase in that he has a frighteningly deep voice coming out of a very young looking face. I choose to believe that this is a sign that Stinger, like Chase, will also become one of my favorite characters.
Now I should elaborate in what I meant in the above paragraph in what is another one of the episode’s positives. We find out more about Champ this episode, and that he was created by a man named Professor Anton, a mix of Dr. Light and Uncle Ben who instilled in Champ a desire to use his strength to protect others. But, he was tragically killed after Champ won his ninth (ha ha!) robot wrestling championship title, with Stinger being present. Champ believes that his desire to avenge Anton is the reason the Taurus Kyu Tama chose him. It remains to be seen whether Stinger had something to do with the murder, as he does feel guilty about something relating to that night. My three guesses is that Anton was sick/possessed and Stinger mercy-killed him at his request, Anton thought Champ cared too much about wrestling and asked Stinger to kill him to force Champ to become a hero (I REALLY hope it’s not this one), or the more likely scenario that Anton was secretly working with Stinger, someone else killed him, and Stinger arrived too late to save him, but just in time for Champ to believe him to be the killer. However it turns out, I find myself completely invested.
And now, two more good points to end us off. First: LUCKY WAS A GOOD CHARACTER THIS WEEK! While he did serve as a Deus Ex Machina of sorts, he provided Champ with good advice, made some smart decisions both on and off the battlefield, and didn’t wander off like a jackass and let his luck save him! Even his “YOSSHA LUCKY”’s seemed more tolerable this episode. I actually legitimately laughed when he created a clone of himself, and the very first thing he and the clone did was hug each other and scream his catchphrase in unison. That and his consistent desire to see the good in Stinger made him not-a-problem in my eyes.
And finally, I felt less frustrated by Eridron today as we finally saw him do something other than be strong, ruthless, or angry! PLOTTING! Delicious evil plotting! Now we know that Eridron is a smart son of a gun who is quite willing to move the pieces of his chessboard against each other and seems to have struck a partnership with Stinger by the end of the episode. The question is, is he playing Stinger, is Stinger playing him, or are they both playing each other. Either way, my newfound discovery of Eridron being voiced by Takaya Kuroda makes me think that all of Eridron’s scenes are just another wacky Yakuza sidequest or minigame that has gone way too far.
So aside from some mild pacing issues and the fact that the large cast is beginning to show (did Garu even get more than one line of dialogue this episode?) this is by far my favorite episode of the series. It seems my initial guess was right and that Kyuranger just needs to hit its stride to join the ranks of great Sentai series.
