"Hassan!" I called. "Come back with it!"
He was already turning the street corner, his rubber boots kicking up snow. He stopped, turned. He cupped his hands around his mouth. "For you a thousand times over!" he said. Then he smiled his Hassan smile and disappeared around the corner.

I was raised a PC Gamer in the early 90's when everyone else I knew played console games, and my reflexes are terrible, so I gravitated to some unusual titles. “Most important”, to me, means the ones that influenced some aspect of my style/world-building/aesthetics or that followed me into my adult years. So, in no particular order: * Loom Baby’s first narrative puzzle game. I was five or six and there was fanart happening in Crayola crayons. Swan Lake is not Swan Lake to me. It’s the Loom soundtrack. I still want my own lights and sound distaff. Gonna pick @timmcosplay’s genius prop-making brain and make it happen someday. * Riven Parts of the world in Riven heavily influenced how I designed Tieke City especially, but also a lot of my fantasy-leaning aesthetics in general. Ugh why is this game so beautiful! * Shivers/Shivers 2 I’m packaging these two as one because to me, they’re a unit. This is where we can tell very clearly that I’m not curating. The sequel, especially, is not a good game. Not at all. Avoid! It’s honestly got some heavy issues with racism (big yikes), the ending is just.... stupid, just plain very, very stupid, and both have acting that is made entirely of the worst cheese. But something about the atmosphere in these games gets to me. Spooky empty museum, spooky empty desert town. Moody abandoned public spaces, especially with the weirdly vibrant colour palettes - I can’t pretend that something didn’t follow me into adulthood from these two. * Chronomaster Reboot era graphics, a story by Roger Zelazny, straight out of the dustiest of old-school science fiction novels, and Ron Perlman! Also Brent Spiner. I played this to the point of obsession at the time and I even have the one spin-off novel that was published. I could swear I held a sequel to said spin-off in my hands in a bookstore in Vancouver once, but the internet tells me that the book I’m remembering doesn’t exist. That haunts me a bit. My desktop computer has been traditionally named Milo, after Brent’s character, ever since it was a beige Windows XP machine. Also I hate Verdry. It haunts my nightmares. * Unreal I am still very, very angry at Epic for delisting the single player game for no dang good reason last year. It’s my favourite shooter. Ugly by today’s graphical standards, certainly. but it was striving for a level of beauty that blew me away in 1998. I loved all the details they put in, and I’d put hundreds of hours into exploring every single nook and cranny available and reading every tidbit of data that I could find - like how there’s a standalone (and rather tragic) story to follow if you explore Bluff Eversmoking super thoroughly with your translator.  Every few years I still get a hankering to fire this up and run around in it. Thankfully I bought it off GOG before it got trash-binned by its parent company.

Chapter 1: The tragic state of affairs
Tumblr media
An hour and a half long car drive and you still managed to be in the middle of nowhere. You could almost swear the dirt road was leading to nothing, but the occasional sign swore otherwise. You sighed. How had you gotten yourself into this, again? Oh, yeah.
-9:34 pm, the day before-
A loud thud followed by an inhuman growl produced from the deepest pits of hell reached your ears in the kitchen. I guess you couldn't ignore her any longer. You leaned past the door,  peeping at your roommate cocooning on the floor.
"Uh... You good?" She immediately started mumbling with fiery passion and you couldn't understand a single word. That meant no. "What did Jimin do this time?"
Yoonji sat up, turning her spine abnormally to look at you. "He's an idiot," you managed to hear.
You pressed your lips together and nodded. "Right. You guys broke up. Is he still bothering you, what is it?" You walked to her and squatted down to her level. You noticed her cheeks were bloody red and stained with tears, her mouth giving you a pout. But you were unbothered.
"He won't let me go tomorrow," she complained.
"The Manor you guys had booked?"
"Yeah!"
"Why won't he let you go?"
"No, I mean... He says I can go but he says he'll go too and I don't want to see him," Yoonji mumbled while wiping her tears with the back of her hand.
Your immediate thought was to tell her to just go since they were going to make up eventually anyway. Seriously, the two of them broke up and got back together like twice a week. Sometimes it looked more serious, sure, but you had fallen for it too many times to believe it now. You would only be sure the two of them were done for real when... Well, actually, never. "So, you don't want to lose your vacation but you want to have the whole house to yourself?" you asked and she nodded. "Well, since you both paid for this, I'm sorry to tell you, but he has just as much right to go as you. You should have thought about that before you broke up over- what was it again? Dumplings?" I mean, this had to be some type of kink or something at this point. They had to be into breaking up and chasing each other all the time. Maybe it was the make-up sex, who knows.
Finally, one of the road signs pointed to the right for a turn. 200 m it said. You breathed out in relief; you were starving and so sleep deprived, you feared you'd drive your car into a ditch by the road. In front of you stood a large gate with an astounding metal design. It was open and you carefully drove in. Your breath hitched the moment the house came into view. What house? That was a whole palace! With three floors, a garden bigger than the nearest park to your apartment, and about a million windows adorning its two wings. So caught up in the drama, you hadn't even had the chance to see a picture to prepare yourself for the beauty of the Victorian artifact. Your jaw on the floor, all you could do was laugh.
Say, how had you managed to get here again? Right, right...
-11:04 pm, the day before-
There was a soft knock on your bedroom door and you hummed in reply. Yoonji burst in with great contrast to her knocking, dashing for the foot of your bed and plopping herself on it with nerve. You paused your texting on your phone momentarily to turn your eyes on hers, noting her tears were all dried up now, a frown in their place.
"I told him I'm not going 'cause I don't wanna see his stupid face," she announced.
The corners of your mouth turned downwards. "Good for you. I'm sure the house isn't worth it, you can do your vacation elsewhere."
"But now he says he's not going..."
You thought about it for a second, then got back to your texting. "Great. Isn't that what you wanted? Now, you can go."
The girl leaned over your legs, trying to catch your attention again with wide eyes full of conspiracies. "But... What if he's bluffing?"
You paused again. Damnit, why was this even making sense? You'd say Jimin is not capable of doing something like that... if you actually thought it to be true. "So, don't go." You looked at her again to make sure your point was getting across. "Yoonji, don't go. That way no matter if he goes or not, you still won't see his stupid face."
A middle-aged woman dressed to fit right into the aesthetic of the Manor greeted you on the big steps of the entrance with something like the enthusiasm you only show your favorite aunt on Christmas. "You must be Ms. Min Yoonji," she called before you even had the chance to reach her.
"Must I?" you replied, immediately following it with a peal of fake laughter.
The woman chuckled and walked towards you. With a closer look, you noticed how youthful her face looked, and how undeniably pretty she was. Definitely looking like a noblewoman who would be in charge of something like this mansion. "Welcome, I'm Mrs. Kim. I'm glad you're here, your partner is already inside," she said.
Oh... So he was bluffing.
You smiled. "Thank you. The place looks stunning."
"Oh, I'm hoping you'll get to enjoy all of its beauty to the maximum this week you'll be spending here," the woman said as she guided you towards the entrance." Just to let you know, every room is at your disposal, the kitchen is fully equipped and with every kind of food you might crave. Housekeeping is daily and with a very discreet staff. I have already given a tour to your partner."
You pushed the heavy door open and walked in, immediately hugged by a heavy but warm atmosphere with a strong, musky scent. Right across from you, there was a big, double staircase with a magnificent chandelier hanging from the high ceiling. All you could do was look around with a stupid face. Jimin was getting Yoonji this type of vacation and she had the audacity to fight with him? How had they even afforded this? You totally understood why your roommate was throwing a tantrum wanting to come here. Why had she even let you come instead?
-12:56 am, the day before, or more accurately, this day but super early-
"Amy... Amy..." You were startled awake, barely making out the silhouette of Yoonji hovering above you in the darkness. "Were you sleeping?" she whispered.
You exhaled and pushed her away, groaning. "Yoonji, a piece of advice: if you have to shake someone for them to answer you, yeah, they were sleeping!"
"Sorry," she said but definitely didn't mean it. She scooted you over to sit next to you. "Hey, so... I was thinking. Maybe you should go."
Be it the sleep or your roommate speaking utter nonsense, all you could think was: "What?"
"Well, I don't wanna go in case Jimin goes, but I also don't wanna let him have the house to himself -you know, out of spite- so maybe you should go." Yoonji blinked at you expectingly but it was still too complicated for you to process. "I mean, you're gonna have a good time, Amy. The house is amazing, I promise, this is a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity, okay? I thought if I let you go then we could also be even for the time you did that assignment for me and got me an A? What do you say?"
You frowned, starting to shake your head. "Yoonji-"
"Please, I just want you to annoy him by just being there, you know? Also, he might not even go. Then you'll have a whole Manor to yourself for a whole week! You can take your books with you and enjoy some time away from society, right? Pretty please..."
Your frown deepened, but you started to think about what she was saying. "You really would rather just give up your vacation to a Victorian Mansion or whatever it is to your roommate than let Jimin have it to himself?"
"Absolutely, yeah."
Well, you couldn't think of a reason to say no to that.
Mrs. Kim finished her welcoming speech with a smile. "In the library, you will find a map of the hiking routes of the forest. There is a mushroom picking one that I wholeheartedly recommend. Of course, anything you might need, you can always pick up our vintage phone -it works perfectly- and call us any time of the day and night."
You gave her a genuine grin and nodded. "Thank you very much, Mrs. Kim!" And after that, the beautiful woman opened the door and left. Where to, you had no idea, since you doubted there was any kind of civilization nearby.
You dragged your suitcase to the bottom of the staircase, about to lift it and go find one of the surely many rooms to occupy. But in the silence of it all, you noticed a fire cracking in the background. So silent, it felt like you and the fire were the only things alive for miles. Yet Jimin must have been roaming somewhere in this Manor.
Huh... He still hadn't shown up at the entrance to check if Yoonji had come? Surely, he must have heard the commotion made but you two ladies.
You released your grip on your suitcase and slowly walked towards the room the fire seemed to be coming from. You wanted to find him and enjoy his face when he would see you instead of his girl- well, ex-girlfriend. You passed through a small hallway, little rooms with cabinets and bookcases until you reached a slightly ampler room that had a lit fireplace. It looked like a sitting room, with a pair of scarlet, velvet armchairs and a matching sofa. There was a large, thick carpet that covered almost the entire floor, and an ebony coffee table in the middle. On the right, a window that expanded from floor to ceiling, but was however half-hidden behind a rich curtain.
You were about to go towards the fireplace before you noticed the slim man standing tall by that window. Looking outside, turned opposite to the entrance. You almost didn't notice him as the colors and textile of his outfit matched the room so well. His brown, a little wavy hair tucked messily behind his ears, light silver glasses sitting low on his nose, hands in his pockets. He was wearing a sweater vest over a beige shirt and baggy trousers and was standing like a model. Something very off about him that you didn't immediately recognize.
"Oh." The interjection left your lips without your command. And at the sound of your voice, he turned around to face you.
-10:46 am, this morning-
You had left your apartment more than a long time ago, Yoonji was expecting that you would have arrived by now and waiting for your news. Had Jimin gone too? How had he reacted? She tried calling you a couple of times but was only met with voicemail. Maybe you didn't have a good signal up in the mountains. Oh, no, how would you keep her up to date now?
Her cellphone buzzed and she rushed to see the message she assumed was from her roommate. It turned out to be her ex.
"You didn't go, then?"
Yoonji laughed. How wicked of her. He must have just seen you arrive at the Manor, instead of her. So he was lying about not going, just as Yoonji had predicted. She flipped her hair from her shoulder dramatically and quickly typed her reply.
"Of course not, I told you I wasn't going."
She couldn't stop giggling like a little girl.
"Cool... Just so you know, I felt bad wasting this already paid vacation, so..."
Yoonji rolled her eyes, still giggling.
"Let me guess. You went by yourself?" How pathetic... He really thought his little trick would work.
"No."
Wait, what?
"I myself didn't go..."
Yoonji blinked.
Come again?
Your eyes widened when you realized the man in front of you wasn't Jimin. The man in front of you was...
"Kim Taehyung? What are you doing here?"
He was about to open his mouth to reply when your phone interrupted you. Without taking your eyes off the man and with a deep frown on both of your faces, you took it out of your pocket and answered. Yoonji's voice started ringing immediately from the other end.
"Amy! Finally! I've been trying to call you for ages. Did you arrive yet? I wanted to tell you Jimin isn't coming. He said he let Tae go." You rolled your eyes. "Can you hear me, Amy? The signal is so bad... Amy, the idiot did the same thing I did and sent Taehyung! Remember Taehyung? Jimin's best friend?"
You sighed. "Yeah... Way ahead of you. He's standing right in front of me." Your eyes traveled down his arms as he moved to fold them over his chest, tilting his head at you.
Yoonji let out an exasperated cry. "Ugh, man! So he told the truth... Look, I'm so sorry I got you into this. Amy, can you hear me? I hope you have no problem with him there. I know you guys are not close- wait, have you guys met? You have, right? Okay, I know you're not close but it'll be fine, right? Just don't pay attention to him and do your thing, yeah darling? Act the same as if Jimin were there, or as if you were alone. Amy, that's fine, right? You can do that, right? How is the house, is it awesome and totally worth it and you're totally not mad at me for sending you there with Tae? Huh? Amy?"
You sighed again. The signal was indeed bad. So you just hung up, hoping your roommate would blame your rudeness on that. Hiding your phone away again, you eyed Taehyung from head to toe. He was still glaring at you as if you'd stolen something from him. Well, I guess if he thought he'd have this whole place to himself, it was kind of like stealing. But that was only because he just happened to arrive first. Both of you had the same claim over the place. Or, well, neither of you did.
"Right, so..." you started since he didn't seem to be reacting any further. "I guess we'll have to stay together."
Suddenly, Taehyung started moving. His eyes still piercing yours and not a word out of his mouth, just a steady charge towards you.
"I-I know you didn't expect me-" you felt the need to mumble quickly, "-but I didn't expect you either!" Taehyung stayed silent, getting closer. "Okay, maybe we lied!" you exclaimed, your feet stepping behind each other. "But you guys lied, too!" There wasn't any more room to move and the man was now right in front of you, leaning into your personal space. "Taehyung, what-"
"Who are you?"
You were caught off guard. "What?" You thought he was joking, but he stayed looking at you with a serious face. "What do you mean who am I?" you sounded offended. "We've met before!"
"Have we?"
"Couple of times!"
Taehyung scanned your entire face before he shook his head. "I don't remember you."
Now you were offended. "I'm Amy!" you announced loudly. "Yoonji's roommate."
At last, he pulled away, his mouth opening in understanding. "Oh... Right, I knew Yoonji had a roommate by that name." He moved farther away but turned his head to you again. "I don't think I've seen you before, though."
You rolled your eyes and slipped around him to escape the place you had been trapped in earlier. "Alcohol does that sometimes," you snorted at him.
Taehyung rubbed his chin, looking at you differently now. You tried to avoid his eyes, examining the room more closely instead. The paintings on the walls, the black encyclopedia on the shelves, the candelabra and tea set on the small table. Every detail was thought of inside the house. "Why are you here, though?" he asked.
"Same reason as you, I assume."
He licked his bottom lip in the act of releasing a small chuckle. "Did you owe a favor to your best friend, too?"
You took out one random book and browsed its thin, yellow pages. "Actually, she owed me."
Taehyung raised his eyebrows in response, then started occupying himself with the little things around the room, as well. "They're ridiculous, aren't they?" You hummed in agreement and put the book back, moving along. "Do you think they might be done for real now?"
"No way." You moved to the smaller window behind the sofa and pulled its curtains away to look at the view. A hill decorated by a dense forest. "Yoonji is over her phone 24/7 waiting for him to text her."
He chuckled again. "I know for a fact Jimin is not taking this seriously. He laughs every time she texts him."
"As he should! She's a drama queen."
"Thank you!" Taehyung called out as if he had been struggling with this for a long time. With two long strides, he appeared next to you and forced you to look into his eyes. "Jimin gets mad at me every time I say that, but she is, isn't she?"
You were a little taken aback by how eager he seemed to be to find this one thing in common between the two of you: having had enough of your friends' relationship. You nodded with an amused smile. "Extremely."
He shook his head, pushing his hair back with a hand. "I honestly don't get how they make it work. Aren't they tired?" He turned serious again and looked at you with big eyes. "I could never have something like that. When I like someone, I want it to be Titanic, not Mr. and Mrs. Smith."
It took you a few seconds to reply, a little lost in his intense stare. But you shrugged. "I kind of get it. It keeps it fun and interesting. They've been together for three years now and yet it's still not boring. Like, they confess their love to each other every other week."
But he insisted. "I wouldn't need all of that to remind my girl how much I love her."
This was getting a little uncomfortable. He was a little too close, and a little too serious. So you leaned back and maneuvered around him, walking towards the door. "Alright, you do your thing with your relationship, they can do theirs." You turned to look at him right at the same time he did. "So, we'll be staying here together, right? I hope that's okay."
Taehyung shrugged just one shoulder. "If it's fine with you," he almost whispered.
You nodded once. "Well, as long as there is not only one bed," you smiled at your joke but he just frowned. You guessed he didn't read fanfiction. You cleared your throat. "The house seems big enough for the two of us, I'm sure we could go about our separate vacations without getting in each other's way."
"Sure, if that's what you want."
You nodded again and pointed to the door. "Should we choose our rooms?"
He clicked his tongue and moved past you. "Sorry, I have already chosen the big chamber on the east wing since I didn't expect company. You might want to get a room on the west wing to avoid me more efficiently." Taehyung walked quickly down the corridor without waiting for you, or even checking if you were following. Not that you had to be following, obviously. You thought he sounded a little annoyed, but you couldn't think of a reason why. If it was you being there, he'd have to get used to it 'cause you weren't going anywhere.
"Cool," you simply replied and followed. The man appeared in your line of view again only after you got in the lobby. He was standing by the staircase, looking at your abandoned suitcase. "I got it," you said automatically, only realizing he hadn't offered to carry it after he looked at you weirdly. You cleared your throat awkwardly, needing to change the subject. "Do you know where the kitchen is? I'm thirsty."
He motioned towards the corridor opposite the one you had just come from. "Down the hall, there's a small one," he said and started jogging up the stairs with his hands in his pockets.
You exhaled the moment he was out of view again. Being around him took up more of your energy than you expected. Which wasn't ideal for a vacation. The whole situation, to be honest, being isolated with Kim Taehyung in an old, strange house, wasn't ideal. You wondered if he felt so put out by it as you did while you walked around the house to find the kitchen. Definitely, you thought. He didn't want to be there with you, it was certain. Not necessarily because he'd shown something like that up until then, but because you knew exactly the type of guy he was. I'll tell you one thing: it wasn't a coincidence that you had such close, common friends, yet barely knew each other.
The kitchen was bigger than your living room, yet it was characterized as small? A long counter stretched all along the wall on the left, with three windows over it that overlooked the garden. There was an island in the middle and cabinets around the rest of the space. A very pleasant room, bright and with light colors on the furniture that went well with the green that posed on the window panes like self-illuminated paintings.
You put your whole face under the faucet and swallowed the very cold -cold like it was just now coming from a nearby river- water. After cleaning your dripping face with your hands, you did a short inspection. The cabinets and the fridge were filled with all kinds of foods, Mrs. Kim was right. You guessed that should have been the case, considering there weren't any markets anywhere close. But that also meant you had to cook all of your food. You and Taehyung. What were you going to do? Cook different meals or share?
That was a future problem. Now, you had to find a room. You dragged your suitcase up the stairs making a little too much noise and turned to the west wing without hesitation. There were a few rooms to choose from; a double room with navy blue wallpaper, a smaller one with a balcony, a more princess-looking room with a small bed and a boudoir. You picked the next one. It had a canopy, queen-sized bed with thick, purple curtains that matched the ones on the big window across the door, and a wooden wardrobe that looked like it was taken from the set of Beauty and the Beast. There was a small fireplace too, although it was not lit, it was still decorated.
A big smile appeared on your face at the sight of the cozy room. Perhaps the house would be worth it after all. Right before walking in, you quickly looked to your left, thinking you saw something, but when nothing was there you walked excitedly inside and closed the door. You tried opening the window to let some fresh air in, but it seemed to be stuck. Or maybe you just didn't know how to do it. It looked fragile and so you let it be, deciding against causing an accident. Instead, you took your clothes and your things out, organizing them around the room to make it more personal, and when you were done, you hoped on the rather tall bed with the softest mattress you had ever felt in your life and called your friend.
"Girl, you owe me big time after this!" you whisper-shouted at her when she picked up, still not certain of how soundproof the building was and not wanting to risk Taehyung hearing anything.
Yoonji giggled from the other end of the call. "Hey, girl! How is the Manor looking so far?"
"Oh, that part is fantastic," you said genuinely. "Still in awe you were stupid enough to let this thing go. But don't try to change my mind like that," you scolded her. You knew her too well for her manipulation to work on you. And she knew that, which is why she giggled again. "Why, oh, why is Kim freaking Taehyung here, Yoon?"
You could almost hear her pout. "Oh, babe, you know I didn't know he'd be there! It's not my fault."
"Well, yes, but when I agreed to do this, it was between having the place to myself or sharing with your boyfriend. I would–"
"Ex-boyfriend!"
"–much rather have Jimin here to annoy instead of stupid Taehyung annoying me," you said, rolling your eyes. You stared at the door then, thinking you'd heard something, but dismissing it as just the old house making noises.
"Oh, c'mon. Don't call him that. It's not his fault he got into this, either."
"You know how I feel about that boy!" you insisted.
"He's actually nice, Amy."
"To you. Because you're his best friend's girlfriend. He doesn't–"
"Ex-girlfriend..."
"–give a fuck about anyone else," you mumbled, playing with your hair. "Anyone who is beneath him and his stupid, rich ass is not worth being nice to, you know?"
Yoonji hummed. "I don't think he's that rich, he's just kind of famous. It's not the same."
You rolled your eyes and groaned. "That's not the point here." You got up and looked out the window. Air had picked up and was making the trees around the garden dance passionately. "I don't feel comfortable around him, so now I have to spend a whole week being weird and worried I might run into him no matter what I do."
Your roommate clicked her tongue disapprovingly at you. "Girl, I say give him a chance and get to know him. Who knows, you may become friends and when you get back we can all hang out together."
You smiled, raising an eyebrow even if she couldn't see it. "I thought you had broken up with Jimin, how are we gonna hang out all together?"
"Ah!" It really must have slipped her mind, too, which made it all that funnier. "You're right, don't become friends with him. You will never see him again, anyway," Yoonji was quick to correct herself.
You sighed, still smiling at your silly friend, as you propped one leg up on the window sill and leaned your head against the glass. "Can't I just leave, say, tomorrow?"
"Amy..."
"Too tired today," you added with a yawn.
"I think you should stay. First of all, if you leave, Jimin might come, and him with his self-proclaimed soulmate there would just make my blood boil, so we can't have that. But second of all, and most importantly, you are at a gorgeous Victorian Manor and all you do is complain about a gorgeous boy living with you. Things could be worse, Amy. He could have been an asshole and ugly." You burst out laughing. "So just enjoy it, okay? Fuck him and enjoy your stay. You won't ever get a chance like this again, Jimin paid for most of it, you know we could never afford that."
You rolled your eyes again, but as lovingly as you could. "Fine..." you succumbed to her words. "I guess I could put on my cute dress and go pick mushrooms and forget about the other guy."
Yoonji cheered. "That's the spirit! Go be a cottagecore fairy, baby, you deserve it."
"God, I hate you."
"Love you, too!"
Yeah, you should enjoy what you could from this. Maybe Taehyung wouldn't be such a pain in the ass. Not very likely, but maybe.

----------
Soon enough, the band make their way home, basking in the golden glow of a couple of excellent shows. It’s only a matter of days until the start of the North American tour, and the excitement is palpable. The boys find themselves at the studio, running through some last-minute tour details, accompanied by a certain brunette firecracker, who sits reading comfortably in the lobby.
Layla, sitting on a luxurious couch just outside of the meeting room, is drowning in a hardcover book, consuming every word at a ravenous pace. The sound of pages flipping periodically is accompanied by the light din of voices detailing the upcoming tour. Lost in the story in front of her, she is surprised when she hears a person clearing their throat, seemingly right in front of her. Looking up, she spots the secretary of Swan Song Records, a woman with glasses and long brown hair ran through with gray, pinned up in a low bun. Light freckles dusted her cheeks. Judging by the crow’s feet at the corners of her hazel eyes, the secretary had to have been older than Layla, perhaps around 50, though her bright smile gave the impression of youth.
“Sorry to interrupt, Miss… I just couldn’t help but notice the book you were reading. I don’t see many fans of the classics around here, especially ones so young.”
Recovering from the shock of being ripped out of the hypnotising story she was wrapped up in, Layla gestures to the seat next to her. With a bright smile, the secretary smoothes down her pencil skirt, and sits down.
“My mother was a literature buff, and it seems she’s passed that down to me! My name’s Layla. You’re Evelyn, right?”
“Y-Yes, I am! How do you…”
“Well, I had to put a name to the lovely secretary that gives me a smile whenever I see her. Makes my day, if I’m being honest.”
“You’re too sweet, darling,” Evelyn says, lips turning up warmly, eyes dancing with joy. “If I may, what are your thoughts on the book? It’s a personal favourite of mine, and it’s always nice to hear new opinions.”
“Well,” Layla starts, lighting up as she speaks. “Wilde’s language paints such a beautiful, vivid picture, and the characters are so interesting, even if they aren’t morally likeable, most of the time. They make mistakes… Many mistakes… but we sympathize with them.”
At this, Layla cups her hand around her mouth, whispering to Evelyn mischievously, as if what she was about to say was the world’s most important secret.
“It’s a favourite of mine too.”
The two women laugh, Evelyn’s hand falling across Layla’s arm, a comforting, grounding weight. Evelyn, with a warm smile gracing her face, crow’s feet as prominent as ever, sends a pang of longing into Layla’s heart. Not for love, but for her old life. Her friends worried out of their minds over her disappearance; her mother, left alone not once, but twice. Her father had left when she was a child, and it had been her and her mother ever since. Layla learned to put up walls, so that she’d never be hurt like that again. They all leave in the end. It’s better that way. Better not to get attached. Better not to get hurt.
“That’s a lovely interpretation, Layla. You know,” Evelyn says, interrupting Layla’s train of thought. “For someone so young, you have an old soul. Wise beyond your years, for sure.”
“You have no idea…”
“Well, I must get to work, darling,” Evelyn claps her hands together, and stands up, resting a hand on Layla’s arm once more. “I’d love to chat again, though. Such refreshing opinions from such a young woman. I’ll let you get back to your book.”
“I would love to! We’ll make plans soon, I promise. Have a wonderful day, Evelyn!” With that, Layla opens the novel, and is taken once again by the current of the story. Minutes pass, until Layla is interrupted once more, this time by a soft press of lips against the crown of her head.
“Everything alright, Layla?”
“Of course, Jim,” Layla says, reaching out to grasp Jimmy’s hand in return. “How did the meeting go?”
“Well, you were right outside the door, I’m surprised you didn’t eavesdrop,” He takes a seat beside her, and reaches down to tap at the book still nestled in Layla’s hand, her finger keeping the page. “You were too engrossed in this, I bet. What are you reading anyways?”
Layla lifts the book to show the cover, which is a slightly worn navy blue, with golden accents in the form of small droplets. In metallic lettering, read ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’.
“Oscar Wilde, hey? Wouldn’t have pegged you for a lover of the classics.”
“I spent my teenage years with Austen and Dickens, after all.”
“I didn’t think you were that old.”
Layla rolls her eyes, a fond look upon her features. Smiling at the man in front of her, she puts a hand to his cheek.
“Yeah, I’m a real cradle-robber.”
“Just make sure my mum doesn’t hear about this relationship: she’ll have a fit.”
“I’ll be careful, angel,” Layla laughs, putting a pensive finger to her chin. “Hey, Jimmy? Do you have a good relationship with your parents?” Jimmy smiles wide at the question and nods, dark curls bobbing at the movement. He absentmindedly takes Layla’s hand in his, rubbing his thumb in soft circles across her wrist.
“My parents… They’ve always been very supportive of me in every way, and I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to find a way to thank them,” Jimmy squeezes her hand briefly, meeting her eyes. “You know, I bet they’d love you.”
“Do you really think so?” Layla’s cheeks grow warm, and her lips tilt upwards in a smile that is uncharacteristically shy.
“Of course I do, petal,” Jimmy says, pushing a fallen lock of hair behind Layla’s ear, his touch featherlight. “How about you? What are your parents like?”
“Well… My dad… He left us when I was young, so it’s been me and my mom ever since,” This is marked with a moment of silence, and Layla’s eyes meet her shoes, pointedly not looking at Jimmy. “My mom’s probably the strongest person I’ve ever met, and I truly can’t thank her enough for everything she’s done for me. She’s my best friend.”
The silence continues, until Layla feels a calloused finger at her jaw, lifting her chin. Finally flicking her eyes up to gaze at the guitarist, she’s shocked by the concern and sadness she sees in those emerald green eyes.
“Petal, I…”
“Jim, it’s fine. It—”
“It’s not fine, Layla. It’s not. I’m so sorry, you didn’t deserve that. Either of you.” Jimmy pulls her into a tight hug, long arms wrapping around her, making her feel safe. They stay like this for what feels like hours, breaking apart slowly.
“Jimmy, I… Thank you.”
“Of course. Now, how about you read me some of that book of yours?”
Layla laughs brightly, albeit a little watery, and smiles at Jimmy, eyes shining with gratitude. Shuffling, she positions herself in his lap, legs hanging off the end of the couch as his arm comes to rest across her back, holding her steady against his chest. She opens the book, dog-earing the corner of the page she was reading, before flipping back to the start.
“Petal, as much as I like this, I thought we were gonna take it slow? I don’t think public places are the best idea to… Well…”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Jimmy,” Layla says, smirk gracing her face as she speaks. “You just make a very comfortable chair.”
Jimmy’s laugh is music to her ears, and she presses a light kiss to his cheek. Focusing on the book in her hand, she begins to read:
“The studio was filled with the rich odour of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden, there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pink-flowering thorn.”
----------
‘Was it all true? Had the portrait really changed? Or had it been simply his own imagination that had made him see a look of evil where there had been a look of joy?’
The next day had arrived, and Layla sits at her kitchen table, enraptured once again by the writings of Oscar Wilde. The words on the page enchant her, and she has no desire to put the novel down anytime soon. She’d have to tell Evelyn all about it, the next time she sees her.
‘Surely a painted canvas could not alter? The thing was absurd. It would serve as a tale to tell Basil some day. It would make him smile. And, yet, how vivid was his recollection—’
A shrill ringing pulls her out of the carefully crafted narrative of Dorian Gray. Layla huffs, annoyed at the intrusion, and moves to pick up the phone.
“Hello?”
“Layla! Hi, good to hear from you, hope you’re having a great day so far! Lovely weather we’re having, hey?” The slightly nasal voice of one Robert Plant, crackles through the phone, and Layla sighs at his exuberance.
“Robert, hey. What is it?”
“Uh… Please don’t freak out. It’s really not that bad, and everyone is… mostly… fine?”
“Rob—”
This is followed by a noise in the background, a sort of crackle, as if Robert had shifted the phone to his other hand. Layla can hear the way his breath picks up, the way panic seeps into his voice. “Just a heads up that we’ll be at your place in about… 10 minutes! See you then!”
“What is going on? I was reading, I’m really not in the mood for—”
Another crackle, and a sigh from Robert’s end of the line. Layla runs a hand through her hair, biting her lip in an attempt to quell the panic rising in her throat.
“Promise me you won’t freak out, little dove.”
Layla exhales sharply through her nose, unimpressed at the plea of the man on the other line. Coiling the telephone cord around her finger to calm her nerves, she responds.
“Fine, I’m not gonna freak out. Now, tell me what happened.”
“Well… Um… Jimmy, well, he kinda… got his… finger slammed in a train door?”
“...”
“Layla? Are you still there?”
“How?!”
“I told you not to freak out…”
“Robert!” Layla exclaims, concern painted clearly on her flushed face.
“Okay, okay, he told us he was holding the door open for someone on the way to Swan Song, and well… You know the rest.”
“Is he going to be okay?”
Another sigh sounds from the other line, and Layla waits in anticipation for his response, growing anxious with each passing moment. Finally, she hears the man’s response, and deflates with relief, sinking into the chair beside her.
“He should be fine. Like I said before, we’re gonna come get you right away. He’ll be okay, Layla.”
“Okay…Robert?”
“Yes, little dove?
“Thank you.”
“Of course,” Robert chuckles lightly, bringing a smile to Layla’s face, the undercurrent of anxiety still coursing through her. She thinks it will stay that way, until she sees Jimmy, makes sure he’s okay. “We’ll be there in 10 minutes. Sit tight, Layla.”
Layla sits at the kitchen table, biting her thumbnail, mind elsewhere, until she hears the telltale sound of a car pulling up, engine cutting out. Flying out the door, She spots Jonesy in the driver’s seat, Bonzo next to him, with Robert in the back. Opening the door, she sits next to the blond, and he gazes over at her, putting a hand to her shoulder. Sympathy flashes across his face as he takes in the shocked look Layla’s sporting.
“He’ll be okay, Layla. He will.”
“Robert, I… Jonesy, please, just drive?”
“Right.”
The engine rumbles to life, and they’re off, no doubt speeding to whatever hospital Jimmy’s holed up in. Layla lets her thoughts drift to Jimmy. She wonders how he’s doing, if he’s in any pain, if they’re treating him well. She’s distracted enough that she barely feels Robert’s hand, warm and comforting, on her knee. Layla is snapped out of her thoughts by a particularly sharp turn, and she looks up at Robert, her eyes brimming with tears.
“Rob… What if he’s… not okay? It was his finger. That means that he might not be able to play, if it’s bad enough,” She stammers, eyes frantic in their search of the blond’s face. “His guitar is his life, and—”
“Layla, calm down. It’ll be okay. It won’t do us any good to think like that.” Robert leans over, throwing his arm around her shoulder as best he could in the cramped car. To his surprise, she leans into him, resting her head on his shoulder. Layla unconsciously brings a hand up to bite her thumbnail, and catching the action, Robert places his hand on hers, pushing it back down to rest in her lap. They stay that way until the car rolls to a stop in the hospital parking lot. Layla lifts her head from Robert’s shoulder with breakneck speed, scrambling out of the car.
“Layla, wait!” Jonesy calls out, running after the woman, who dashes through the door. Robert and Bonzo catch up, just as Layla reaches the front desk, panting from exertion. The nurse on shift looks at her, eyes wide, shocked at the display.
“Excuse me, love,” Bonzo says, tucking Layla under his arm as he speaks to the nurse. “We’re looking for James Page? He was brought in for a fractured finger, I believe?”
“...Yes, right. What is your relationship with the patient?”
“We’re his bandmates, we can call our manager if you need proof. Please, we just need to see if he’s okay.”
The nurse eyes the group dubiously, and grabs the chart sitting next to her, looking through it. Glancing at the group again, she points behind them, to a room packed with seats, posters and pamphlets lining the walls.
“It seems that Mr. Page is still with the doctor getting X-rayed, so I’m going to need you to take a seat in the waiting area. Give that manager of yours a call, and we’ll see what we can do for you.”
“Thank you, love.” Bonzo says, as he herds the group over to the soft, patterned armchairs, plopping down with a sigh. Jonesy excuses himself to make a phone call to Peter, the others left waiting for news that won’t come fast enough.
Jimmy has to be okay. He has to.
----------
“For James Page?” The nurse’s voice rings out across the waiting area, and the group shoot up from their seats, stiff backs groaning in protest. “Follow me.”
The nurse leads them through a labyrinth of hallways, stopping finally at a room with a large 164 pasted on the closed door. Through the window looking into the room, Layla spots Jimmy asleep under the covers, his hands atop the sheets, resting on his stomach. He looks peaceful, she thinks, like he’s devoid of pain. If she couldn’t see the injured hand at all, she’d have thought he was perfectly fine.
The group finally walk into the room, the sharp smell of antiseptic burning their nostrils. Hearing the click of the door opening, Jimmy opens his eyes, pupils blown wide. His irises are almost black, and he sends them a dopey smile, a giggle bursting out.
“Hey, guys. Fancy seeing you all here.” Jimmy slurs, laughing harder now, as though he had told the most hilarious joke in the world. The boys join in, amused by the antics of their guitarist. Layla hangs back, staring at Jimmy, concern clear on her face. She had spotted the injured finger on the way in, which was already bruised a deep purple, the fingernail completely blackened.
“They give you the good stuff, Pagey?”
“You know it, Jonesy.” Jimmy shoots the bassist a sloppy wink, and the group erupts into soft laughter once more. Taking a dazed glance around the room, the raven-haired man pouts, completely endearing in his drugged state. “Hey… where’s Layla?”
Peter, who had been standing next to the bed, moves aside, and glassy green met warm brown. The guitarist smiles softly, relaxing back into the pillows. He sticks out his uninjured hand, and she walks closer to take it. Never lessening her grip, Layla threads the fingers of her free hand through Jimmy’s messy curls, and looks down at him fondly.
“How’re you doing, champ?”
“Good, now that you’re here. I would kiss you right now… if I wasn’t seeing two of you.”
“They must have him on the really good stuff…” Layla throws over her shoulder, looking back at the injured guitarist. He’s looking up at her with unabashed affection, and she can’t help but blush at the adoration in his gaze.
“Sorry to interrupt,” comes from the open doorway, as Jimmy’s doctor steps through. “I’m Dr. Vane, I treated James when he came in. If you’d kindly step out for a moment, I’d like to go over his prognosis.”
The boys file out of the room, and Layla goes to follow, stopped in her tracks by Jimmy tugging her back towards him with a whimper. She gives in, sinking back down in the chair at his bedside.
“I’m so glad you’re okay, Jimmy. I was so scared when Robert called. I thought...”
“I’m glad you’re here, petal. Now, come into bed with me. I want to see you better.” Jimmy mutters, scooting over to make room for her to fit in the small hospital bed. Layla laughs, nodding, and crawls in beside him, careful not to hurt him. She turns on her side, her hand landing in his hair again. Jimmy looks up at her, pupils still dilated, and presses a quick peck on her lips, giggling anew.
“You’re so beautiful. Have I ever told you that you’re beautiful? ‘Cause you are.” He insists, slurred speech returning in full force, his eyes fluttering closed.
“Go to sleep, Jimmy. I’ll be here when you wake up.”
He hums softy in response and a few seconds later, Jimmy’s breathing evens out. He’s dead to the world. Through the door left ajar, Layla can hear snippets of the conversation with the doctor.
“... Fractured the tip of his finger… At least a month.”
“Will he be able to play anytime soon?” That was Peter, voice soft with worry for the frail man in the hospital bed.
“He should rest… Not good to put too much strain on it… Keeping him here until the anaesthetic wears off.”
Tuning them out, Layla looks down at the man sleeping beside her. His hair is matted on one side of his head, and he snores louder than he’d ever admit, but he looks peaceful. He’s not in any pain, and that’s enough for Layla. She drifts off, as the sound of footsteps against the floor draw near. Her tired eyes open to slits, and she sees a shadow with dark, shoulder-length and a beard. It must be Bonzo, she thinks. The last thing Layla hears before succumbing to the exhaustion that plagues her, is the drummer’s soothing voice, hushed to a whisper.
“Let them sleep.”

Halloween 2020
She really didn’t think that the day would hit her so hard. The days leading up to it had been uneventful, the decorations lining the halls at work not fazing her in the slightest as she went about her daily routine. But when Jo woke up on Halloween morning, it felt like the past year of her life was slapping her in the face. The cold harsh reality of her husband up and leaving her sat deep in the pit of her stomach, her mind reeling as she laid in bed.
“Are you getting up today,” Levi looked at Jo from his position on the couch, eyeing her warily. “Because I had plans but I can cancel them.” “Get out, go away,” Jo’s monotone voice was barely above a mumble as she stared menacingly at Levi. “Let me wallow once again in the realization that my marriage has failed and I will probably die alone. Or with you. Can’t tell which of those is worse.”
Levi blew out a short breath, gathering his things and letting Jo know he was going to hang out with Nico for the day. Once the door to the loft was closed and locked, Jo reached beneath her bed and pulled out a large black box. Pulling the lid off, her breath caught in her throat as she took in the contents of the box.
Laying on top was a ratty tshirt, one that Jo had once religiously worn as she climbed into bed every night. The faded Iowa State logo stared up at her with a menacing aura, the memories that came with it too painful for Jo to relive. She set it aside and reached for the photo album below it, the dusty jacket brandishing a name she’d wished she could forget but rang through her mind everyday.
The Karev’s.
She knew it was torture, opening the book up to look at photos of a day that was once happy and beautiful but now filled her eyes with tears, but she did it anyways. The shades of blue and yellow that graced the pages, the smiling faces of their friends, of him, were like a glowering unwanted sign that her life had taken a detour that she had neither wanted nor anticipated. It didn’t help that there was a Polaroid tucked into the back page, her and Alex grinning at the camera with fake blood and vampire fangs adorning their faces.
Hastily shoving the photobook and shirt back into the box, Jo ignored the numerous photos, ticket stubs, letters, and other memorabilia from the years she’d spent with Alex and shoved the box back under the bed. Why she’d thought taking it out was a good idea she would never know, but the feeling that had been blossoming when she woke up was now taking over her entire chest in a painful display.
How had her life been so different a year ago? Sure it wasn’t ever picture perfect, her and Alex had their differences but they’d always worked through whatever was thrown at them together. His dad, DeLuca, Paul, him getting fired, her mom… every single problem they’d faced in their seven years together had been done exactly like that, together. Whether by choice or by reluctant agreement, the two were always there for one another, but apparently ex wives with two children she kept a secret for five years was where they drew the line. Where Alex drew the line.
Knowing she wouldn’t be doing the laundry that was piling up or scrubbing the sinks that needed some TLC, Jo settled back into bed, eyes watering as she scooted to the right side of the bed and clutched the now unused pillow that lay there. It didn’t smell like him any longer, but the comfort of holding the fabric to her chest still held.
That’s where Meredith found her hours later, tear stains across her cheeks as she slept through the afternoon. A heavy sigh left the blonde as she settled onto the edge of the bed, one hand patting Jo’s shoulder affectionately as she woke.
“Schmitt texted, he said you were wallowing in misery so I figured that was a cry for help,” Meredith let out a chuckle at Jo’s angry expression. “Come on, you can come take the kids trick or treating with me, it’ll be a good distraction.”
“I don’t want to move,” Jo mumbled into her pillow, eyes barely moving to meet Meredith’s. “I want to lay here until I sink so far into the mattress that no one can ever find me again.” “Jo, it’s been months. And I know it’s not easy, but you’ve been so strong through all of this, I’d hate to see one day ruin everything for you,” Jo sighed at Meredith’s words, knowing her friend was right. “If you get up now I will pour wine into a tumbler for you to drink while we walk around.” “Fine,” Jo rolled out of bed, glaring at Meredith as she did so. “But I’m only getting up for the wine.”
Halloween 2023
“You know I don’t normally interact with other humans on Halloween.”
Jo stood in the doorway of her apartment, a grin on her face as she looked at the man in front of her. His grin was threatening to overtake his face as he leaned down and kissed her sweetly, one arm wrapping around her waist, “I brought beer and scary movies, will you let me in now?”
“Okay fine, only because of the beer and not because I like you so much,” Jo rolled her eyes and opened the door fully, letting Jack into the apartment and locking the door behind him. “Please tell me you have Scream in your collection, otherwise I don’t think this is gonna work out.”
Jack pulled out the aforementioned DVD case, eliciting a cheer from Jo as he set up the movie. She really didn’t think she’d been this happy in a long time, the feeling of happiness bubbling in her chest as she grabbed popcorn an altogether new experience.
When she’d picked up a Safe Haven baby from Station 19 four months ago, she hadn’t expected to have an hour and a half long conversation with Jack Gibson, who’d been sitting with the little girl before she’d arrived. Their conversation flowed so easily that the two had picked it up over dinner that night and the rest was history.
She hadn’t seen anyone since Alex left, she hadn’t wanted to waste time on something that was going to leave her heartbroken again because she just couldn’t do that. But the connection she felt with Jack was real and exciting and something Jo hadn’t realized she’d needed until she had it. It almost distracted her from the fact that today her and Alex should be celebrating four years of marriage together. Almost.
“Are you dazing out again over there,” Jack’s voice was light and cheery, but Jo could see the concern etched on his face as soon as he took a good look at her. “Hey, what’s wrong? We can watch Poltergeist if that’s what you want.”
A heavy sigh left Jo as she realized that she’d have to tell someone else exactly why today was one of her least favorite days of the year. Of course Jack knew that she was divorced, he’d met Alex once or twice when bringing in patients but he didn’t know everything. It wasn’t something that you should burden your partner with four months into your relationship, the ways that you failed in your previous marriage.
“I was married. Obviously. And we got married on Halloween, so that’s why I don’t like being around people today, because it still sucks,” Jo’s gaze was concentrated on her fingers as she spoke, not wanting to see the pitiful expression on Jack’s face as she relayed her tragic backstory. “And I didn’t really wanna bring it up because you… you are the best thing that’s happened to me in a long time and I don’t want to ruin that by talking about my failed marriage.”
Eyes finally flitting up to look at Jack, Jo was startled to find empathy instead of pity in his expression. She knew he’d had a rough upbringing like her, that neither of them had been handed anything they had in life, but the unexpected compassion and Jack showed her always took her by surprise.
“You are a badass. And for the record, you’re the best thing that’s happened for me in quite awhile too,” Jack wrapped his arms around Jo and brought her into his chest, pressing a kiss into her hair. “Would it make you feel better if we played a drinking game and got ridiculously drunk?”
“You know me so well,” Jo giggled as her eyes met Jack’s, his green eyes sparkling with that same sense of compassion that he always wore so brightly when he was around her.
The two settled in for a night filled with laughter, shots, and scary movies as Jack cracked jokes all night, making sure that the smile on her face never left.  For once Jo didn’t feel like the day consisted of her replaying all of her past mistakes. Instead, for the first time in a long time, Halloween felt like a new beginning.
Halloween 2025
“Oh man it is too early to be awake,” Jo’s groans echoed through the empty fire station, her feet leading her towards the soft voices she heard. “Hello? Anyone here?”
“We’re in here,” a smirk played onto Jo’s face at the sound of her boyfriend's voice, not expecting to see him today. “Hey there.”
“Hey yourself, who do you have there,” Jo walked further into the room that Jack sat in, a tiny bundle settled in his arms. She peeked over his shoulder, taking in the dark curls and soft features of the baby he held. “Well aren’t you a cutie. How long have you had her?”
“Just an hour or so, she’s been perfectly calm,” Jack looked up to Jo, gladly accepting the kiss she placed on his lips. “Usually by now they’re screaming at me, but this one hasn’t wanted anything except snuggles.”
“Maybe you’ve just got the magic touch with this one,” Jo settled into the chair across from Jack, giggling at the faces he pulled as he tried to entertain the baby. “She seems content there.”
“It sucks, she’s got no family and she doesn’t even get to celebrate her first holiday,” Jack’s finger ran across the baby’s cheek, eliciting a quiet coo from the little girl. “Oh I know sweetheart, maybe if you’re lucky the nice doctors will sneak you a lollipop.”
Jo’s heart leapt at the sight before her, fingers twisting the silver chain across her neck. She’d been to the fire station to pick up babies more than she’d like to say in the past few years, but seeing the tiny infants cradled in Jack’s arms always made her heart burst.
“How do you feel about stealing a baby,” Jack’s eyes widened as they met Jo’s, a grin taking over her face at the shocked look he wore. “Cmon, trust me on this one. It’ll just be for a little bit, plus you’re off now right?”
“Yes, but now I’m concerned about what my girlfriend has planned for this poor innocent baby.” +
“I give you about ten minutes of this before someone calls you out and we get arrested,” Jack’s eyes nervously flitted around the bustling Peds ward. “I will give you props though, she looks pretty cute.” Jo turned from the sight of children running down the hospital halls to the infant in Jack’s arms. They’d stopped at Target before coming to the hospital, grabbing a pumpkin costume to put on the newborn before they took her around the Peds ward to trick or treat. Jack and Jo both knew that they were being a little silly, but they wanted the little girl to have at least one day where she felt loved.
“Of course she does, she’s the cutest little baby in the world. Aren’t you Hallie? Yes you are,” Jo grabbed the infant’s foot, looking up to Jack who was staring her down with an unamused expression. “What? She needed a name and I watched Parent Trap last night. Plus it’s kind of fitting, Hallie… Halloween… Oh you’re just a party pooper!”
“Jo! What’re you doing here,” Link sauntered up to Jo and Jack with a smile, sleeping baby strapped to his chest. “Woah who's baby is that? Did you hide a pregnancy from me for nine months?”
Jo’s eyes widened as she stared her best friend down, lightly slapping his arm, “No you idiot, this is Hallie. She’s a Safe Haven baby, but we wanted to dress her up and let her have some fun before we turned her over.”
Links gaze floated from the baby still cuddled against Jack to Jo who was perfectly settled into his side. He held his hand out, a knowing smirk on his face, “Give me your phone, I’ll take a picture of you guys.”
Without hesitation, Jo handed the object over and both her and Jack wore bright smiles as Link snapped the picture. He handed the phone back, both adults leaning in to look at the photo in awe.
“I give you about a week,” Link chuckled, both Jo and Jack too caught up in the infant with them to notice his words. “I’ll see you guys later!”
Jo absentmindedly waved her friend off, grabbing Hallie from Jack’s arms and bringing her to her own chest. The little girl blinked up at Jo before settling contentedly against her, eyes closing in a matter of seconds.
“You know, she seems pretty content with us,” Jo looked up from the baby to her boyfriend with wide eyes, not believing the words she was hearing. “What? She does, she’s barely cried since I got her this morning and looks so comfy snuggled up with you.”
“You are pretty cute, I’m just gonna sneak you out and take you home,” Jo squeezed the hand of the infant, looking up at Jack who was staring at her with an awed look. “What? Do I have baby spit up on me?”
“Nothing, you just look good. You’re a natural,” Jack brought Jo back into his side, pressing a kiss to her head. “I love you.” “I love you too,” Jo laughed as the baby burped loudly before settling herself back against Jo. “And I think she likes you too.”
Halloween 2030
“Bailey, I just finished my charts and I am heading out,” Jo sighed as she set her arms on the nurses station, head leaning warily against one hand. “I’m off for the rest of the day, I’m just going to check on Mr. Olsen in the ER before I duck out. Pretty sure my kids are driving their dad nuts and the addition of sugar tonight won’t help with that.”
Bailey let a laugh out, dismissing Jo for the day and letting the younger woman know she wasn’t needed the next day. A sigh left her as she climbed into the elevator with her purse in tow, Jo finally feeling a small sense of relief.
“You are not making my job easier, you’re much more troublesome than your brother,” Jo settled one hand onto her growing baby bump, a strong kick meeting her hand as she rolled her eyes. “Typical. You’re going to have your sister's attitude aren't you?”
The elevator dinged loudly, bringing Jo away from her conversation with her unborn child and into the real world. As she stepped off the elevator, her hands dug into her purse in search of her phone. She’d finally dug it out when she ran straight into whoever was walking in front of her.
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry! I was ju-,” the air in Jo’s lungs left suddenly, as if it had been sucked away by a vacuum as she met the eyes of the person she’d bumped into. “Oh my god. Alex.”
Alex Karev, ten years older than when she’d seen him last, was standing not even two feet in front of Jo. Her heart was hammering as she stared at her ex husband, his presence the last thing she’d expected, especially today of all days.
“Hey Jo, good to see you,” hearing his voice almost brought tears to Jo’s eyes as she stared dumbly up at Alex. “I’m working on a case with Hayes for the week. You look good, happy… round.”
A small laugh escaped Jo then, her hand falling to her bump as she finally found her voice again, “Yeah, this one kinda popped out right away. Between that and my constant morning sickness, I couldn’t hide being pregnant for very long.”
“I’m glad, that you’re uh happy, that’s good to hear,” Jo watched Alex’s eyes flit to the wedding set on her left hand, then back up to her.
“Mama!”
Both Alex and Jo turned toward the excited voice sounding down the hallway, a head full of black curls flying past Alex as the little girl they belonged to wrapped her arms around Jo’s legs. A second shorter head of messy brown hair crashed into Jo’s legs, laughter escaping her as she tried to wrangle both children, “Okay you two, mom can’t breathe!”
“Sorry, they escaped as soon as I walked through the door,” Jack appeared next to Jo a second later, pressing a kiss to her cheek before turning to Alex. If he was shocked to see the man, he hid it well as he extended his hand towards him. “Hey, Jack Gibson. Alex, right?” “Yeah, nice to meet you,” Alex shook Jack’s hand with a small smile, Jo’s heart skipping a beat at the unusual sight. “You guys have some good looking kids.”
Jo laughed, her face lighting up as she looked at the two children now preoccupied with a game of tag, “I can’t take all the credit, Max is Jack’s clone and Hallie just kinda… fell into our laps. She’s got my attitude though, if that counts for anything.” “That counts for everything, you know she uses that to get whatever she wants,” Jack slung his arm around Jo’s shoulder as she leaned into him, her hand coming back to her burgeoning stomach. Jo could tell Alex was watching them, but she didn’t have the words to verbalize how odd it made her feel.
“I gotta go, but it was nice to meet you Jack,” Alex waved his hand at the other man, before turning to Jo. Their eyes met for a second and it almost felt like that day eleven years ago standing in a courtroom in the most ridiculous costumes. Jo’s throat tightened as she offered a watery smile to Alex, his own eyes glassy as they finally broke away from hers. “It was good to see you again Jo, it really is good to see you happy.”
Jo could only nod, lifting her hand in a wave to Alex, “You too Alex. Have a good stay.” Alex turned and left then, Jo’s eyes watching him until he turned a corner and was out of her view. The sight tugged at her heart strangely, her mind bringing up the image of him walking into an airport so many years ago and never turning around. She doesn’t realize there’s tears floating down her face until Jack nudges her lightly.
“You okay?” “Yeah,” Jo swipes at the tears that have pooled on her cheeks, turning to Jack with a smile. She leans up to press a kiss to his lips, holding on a bit longer than she normally would in public before pulling and meeting his green eyes with her brown. “I’m perfectly fine, just another Halloween. You guys ready to go?” Jack pauses for a moment, holding Jo’s stare before turning back to their kids who are still running around the hallway, “Yup, we just came to pick you up before we headed to Meredith’s. Hallie! Max! Let’s move it!” The two kids followed Jack and Jo out of the hospital, a string of laughter following the family as they made their way into the chilly Seattle air. Jo’s eyes lingered on the trauma bay as they left, remembering a day so long ago it felt like another lifetime when she’d first met the man she’d been married to. A swift kick to her ribs pulled her out of her thoughts, her fingers squeezing Jack’s as they made their way through the parking lot.
Just another Halloween….

Six Months Later After they’d gotten engaged, John had completed his last job just weeks later, and in celebration, he and Y/n had gone down to city hall and tied the knot. It had been an extremely small and intimate affair with just a couple witnesses. Though it didn’t take away from the romance; Y/n had worn a simple white knee length dress that showed off her barely there bump and John had donned a smart suit, sans tie. Afterwards, they’d gone to dinner at one of their favorite places. Six months later, they were still basking in newlywed bliss, all while preparing for their new addition.
“John?” Y/n called, slowly descending the stairs to the basement, where John worked most days. Ever since he’d left the assassin life behind, he’d taken on book binding full time, though it was largely as a cover and something to keep him occupied; his former lifestyle had left them more than financially secure. Though, restoring classics by commission still brought in a fair amount too. “John!” Y/n called, louder that time, she’d been calling out to him since opening the basement door, journeying up and down stairs was becoming a task, especially considering Y/n hadn’t seen her own feet in nearly two and a half months by then.
“Yeah?” John finally replied, standing from his chair when Y/n was finally a few feet off. Seeming to just realize himself, his eyes widened and he dropped his tools, careful to not make a mess, “Y/n, babe, what are you doing down here? The ink-”
“Isn’t good for me and neither is the heat,” Y/n cut him off rolling her eyes. It was a lecture she’d gotten several times. Even if he was no longer the big, scary Baba Yaga, John was still the man that loved his wife and child, who they’d not too long ago found was going to be a little girl, to pieces; overprotective and sometimes, more concerned than called for. “You know,” she teased, “I wouldn’t have to come down here if you’d answer me when I call you from up there,” with one hand, Y/n pointed up the stairs, while the other laid absently on her stomach.
“I’m sorry,” he frowned lightly, stepping closer to Y/n, planting a loving kiss to her forehead. One of his large hands rested next to Y/n’s on her bump, smiling lightly when he felt their daughter kick, “I was just so focused on work, and you know the walls down here are thicker. You could have texted me though.”
Y/n huffed, rolling her eyes again, “Texted you from upstairs? Yeah, I’m not doing that.”
Chuckling, John brushed some stray hair away from Y/n’s face, surveying her outfit for the first time; a cute, navy blue maternity dress that ended at her knees with little bow at the breast line and capped sleeves, paired what had recently become her favorite pair of shoes- and the only pair she could put on without his help. Not that John ever complained about doing it. He’d do anything for his two favorite girls. “You’re going somewhere?” He furrowed his brows; he didn’t want to say it, but the thought of her going out alone that late into the pregnancy worried him.
“Yeah,” Y/n shook her head absently, trying to remember if she’d mentioned it or not, “I have to pick up that custom blanket we ordered. And I also need to get some cleaning fluid for my camera. I’m sorry,” she pouted, “I must have forgotten to mention that.”
“It’s okay,” John smiled faintly, “But maybe you could take it easy and I’ll get that stuff for you?”
“What?” Y/n scoffed, dismissing him, “No, it won’t take too long, I’ll be back before lunch. And I’m already dressed.”
John sighed, rubbing his hands up and down Y/n’s arms, “Yeah, but don’t you want to get some rest?”
“I’ve gotten a lot of rest over the past week,” frowning, Y/n sighed heavily, “John, it's just a few hours, okay, let's not make a thing of it.”
“I’m not trying to make a thing of it,” it's not like he’d actively set out to upset her, “I just-”
“Want me to be safe and healthy,” Y/n made a sound in her throat that sounded much like an exasperated groan, “I know. But I’m going into the city for a couple hours. I doubt something bad is gonna happen. Look,” she bargained, “If you want, I can text you the entire time. You’ll know where I am, and that I’m okay.”
Something in the back of his head told John that he should plead with her to stay home, but he knew her and he knew that Y/n wouldn’t let it go without a fight. Besides, he was probably being paranoid anyway. “Fine,but not while you’re driving,” John nodded stiffly, kissing Y/n again, “I’m sorry, I was squeezing too tight, I just want you two to be okay.”
“I know,” Y/n cupped his cheek, “But we’re fine, and I promise, if we’re not, you’ll be the first to know.”
Letting his eyes slip closed, John bent to press his forehead to her, “Good. I’ll see you later?”
“Well obviously,” Y/n giggled, “I love you,” she kissed him one final time.
“I love you too,” when John pulled away, he crouched down, his hands on Y/n’s hips, “And I love you, my little princess,” he pressed a kiss to Y/n’s stomach, nuzzling it before he pulled away, letting her head back upstairs and off to town.
Tumblr media
Four Hours Later John was knee deep in his work, his steady fingers carefully working the tools expertly, a reflection of his skill in the area. He was repairing a dislodged page from a first edition of a classic children’s novel. It was for a client who collected that sort of thing and since his ‘retirement’, John had worked on quite a few books for the elderly woman. Slowly, with optimum expertise, John reattached the page, sighing heavily when his phone started vibrating on the table. At first, he had every intention of ignoring it, though, quickly realized that it could be Y/n, snatching it up without any regard for the caller Id. “Hello?”
“Mr. Wick?” The voice wasn’t readily familiar and carried a thick Russian accent, “It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”
“Who is this?” John’s voice was gruff and low, disinterested in games, and definitely not interested in carrying a conversation with whoever was on the other anyway; the only Russians he knew were criminals.
The man chuckled, “Why, I’m offended, considering we were such good friends before you retired But don’t worry Mr. Wick, it will come to you soon enough,” when John didn’t respond, his mind already ticking; trying to figure out who the caller was. Whoever it was, greatly unsettled him. “You know John, when you came to me, saying that you needed help so you could get out, I thought that maybe, you were getting too old. Every dog has its day,” he chuckled again, and that was what jogged John’s memory. The man was Dimitri Sokolov, the leader of a mob that had broken away from Viggo’s about twenty years ago. Since their split, Viggo and Dmitri had been sworn enemies, so naturally, when John needed help to get out from under Viggo’s thumb, ready to start a normal life with Y/n, he’d gone to Dimitri, who was more than willing to knock his enemy down a few notches. It hadn’t been his best idea, John knew that, but he was desperate; he wanted to be done, for good, so he could fully commit himself to Y/n and their child. “But now I see,” Dimitri continued without John’s entertainment, “It was for a woman.”
Just then, John’s phone buzzed, and hurriedly, he pulled it away, opening a string of texts from an unknown number. They were all pictures of Y/n in real time, walking along the pavement in hand, shopping bags in hand, handbag on her shoulder and her favorite coat thrown over her pretty dress. “She’s beautiful, absolutely radiant,” Dimitri hummed, “I see why you wanted to leave for her, besides the obvious of course. The young lady stole Baba Yaga’s heart, didn’t she?”
“Whatever you want,” John’s jaw was clenched, book-binding forgotten and his complete attention focused to protecting Y/n, “I’m sure you can get it without bringing her into this.”
“Now,” Dimitri sighed, “If I didn’t do that, then I wouldn’t have any leverage, now would I? Besides, I worked so hard to find Y/n, the wife of the Boogeyman, mother of his child. Would be a shame if something happened to her, don’t you agree? And if you never met that baby, tragic.”
At the mention of Y/n, John’s breath caught in his throat; he couldn’t let something happen to her, John didn’t think he could live with it. A world without her, where he’d never met his daughter would kill him, if not physically, in every other way. “You wouldn’t,” John croaked, hoping Dimitri wouldn’t hear the crack in his voice.
Chortling heartily, “How naive of you; thinking that killing a woman and her child is beneath me. Let me tell you something John; you owe me. That little family you’re trying to make with Y/n, I gave it to you, and I promise, if you aren’t willing to cooperate, I’ll have no problem taking it away. In fact,” another text came in, that time, the picture of Y/n was taken from a closer angle, “I could take her out right now if I wanted. Imagine that, having a pretty little wife and a baby on the way, and in just seconds, they're gone.”
The gnarly thought made John’s stomach turn, and he stood from his workstation abruptly, breathing heavy, “What do you want?”
“I’m sending you an address, I want everyone at it dead by five pm,” Dmitri paused and John knew it was to rile him up, “And if they’re not, then I hope you can make peace with knowing that your family died because of you,” he paused again, that time in anticipation of John’s response. Though, it never came, instead, John clenched his jaw, his fist enclosed at his side. Smacking his lips, Dmitri carried on, “In the meantime, I’ll be taking your lovely wife…..under my wing. Do we have an agreement Mr. Wick?”
Instead of answering, John hung up, immediately pulled up Y/n’s number, there was no way he was giving Dmitri the opportunity to get to her. He didn’t know how much time he had, but he was going to try. She picked up on two rings, “Hey handsome.”
“Hey baby,” John tried to maintain his composure, but just the sound of her voice was enough to sting his eyes. Y/n had no idea what was going on, how much danger she was in. He’d do anything, give everything to have had her stay home, where she’d be safe. Swallowing thickly, he cleared his throat, “Did you get everything?”
“Yeah. Oh John,” she giggled, “You should see the blanket, it’s the cutest and they embroidered it in white, at the corner, Baby A. Wick. And it’s so soft,” her tone was giddy and John wished that he could share her excitement, but all it did was make him sick to his stomach. That couldn’t be the last time they talked, “I can’t wait to bring her home in it,” Y/n sighed happily.
Sniffing, John nodded, “Me too baby.” Biting his lip, John had to stop himself from breaking down, throwing up, or both.
“You okay honey? You sound funny, are you sick?” A new worry etched Y/n’s tone and John felt himself melting the way he usually did when she expressed her concern for him. Before Y/n, no one had ever cared for him the way she had, he never thought that he deserved it before she made him realize that he did.
“No,” John cleared his throat again, “Y/n, love, I need you to do something for me, you need to do exactly as I say, please. I need you to go somewhere, it’s at the end of-” John was mere seconds away from directing Y/n to the Continental, where he knew for certain, no one would hurt her, when she gasped loudly, her breathing loud and unsteady through the speaker, “What? What’s going on?”
“John….” she breathed, her voice shaking, “I….” another gasp left her lips and John could hear her trying not to cry. In the background, John could hear someone else, a man urging Y/n to keep walking and play it cool, “I love you.” Before he could have a few seconds to return the words or even tell her what was going on, the line clicked dead.
“Y/n?” John nearly yelled, pulling the phone away. The call had been disconnected. He couldn’t believe it; he’d had a solid five minutes, just enough time to direct her to the hotel, and he hadn’t used it. Anything could happen to her, and it was because of him. In a frenzy, John tried to call her back, but it went straight to voicemail. Eventually, his efforts were interrupted by another text; a picture of Y/n buckled up in the front seat of a sedan, her hands bound at the wrists with cable ties and her face tear stained, the caption was simple, but effective; ‘try something like that again, and she’s gone.’ Tossing the phone to the table, John hastily swiped at his eyes, snarling viciously before pounding his fists on the surface. That wasn’t how it was supposed to go. John was retired, on the cusp of starting a family with the woman of his dreams. He should have been painting a nursery, not about to dig out his old gear. But he’d do it, to save her, he’d do anything.
Tumblr media
“Come on,” the scruffy, shady-looking man tugged at Y/n’s arm, pulling her out of the unmarked car. His grip was tight, and even through the sleeves of her short trench, his nails seemed to dig into her skin. Y/n stumbled forward, struggling to keep up with the man, who’s name she didn’t know- apparently kidnappers didn’t particularly care for introductions.
They walked along a dirt road, towards an old, dilapidated barn, miles away from the city. Y/n blinked away tears, desperately trying to push away her fear. “Why are you doing this?” She summed up the courage to ask. The closer they got to the barn, the worse it looked; white paint was flaking off in huge sections, exposing weather beaten wood, every nail holding the thing together, or at least the ones that Y/n could see, looked like a one way road to tetanus and whatever glass remained at the broken windows was stained with dust collected over the years.
Just as he shoved inside, her captor chuckled humorlessly, pushing Y/n towards the center of the barn, “You should ask your husband.”  Hastily, he pushed Y/n into a rickety chair jammed to an old post. The dingy cushions looked musty and uncomfortable and the frame was rusted and crooked. Upon being shoved into it, Y/n winced, her breath jumping when the man started tying one of her legs to the chair. Using the distraction, Y/n laced her fingers together, rearing back and swinging wildly, catching him at the side of his head. The assault knocked him off balance and the diamond on her wedding ring seemed to break his skin, though it didn’t take long for him to recover and it certainly wasn’t enough time for Y/n to get up and run. Without thinking twice, he slapped her, hard, “You fucking bitch!”
A choked sob escaped her lips, one of which was now split. Her cheek burned and hot tears didn’t do anything to cool it. “Look at me,” calloused fingers grabbed her chin. Y/n took her lower lip between her teeth and her chest heaved, racked with shaky sobs, “You really wanna make this harder than it has to be?” When Y/n didn’t answer, he yelled, “Answer me!”
Jumping, she cried a bit louder, “No.” Grumbling something about how she’d have to behave, the man resumed his former task, tying her ankles to the chair, leaving her legs slightly parted. When he was done, the man stood, pulling a chair up directly in front of her, just about five feet away, getting out his phone, dialing a number before putting it to his ear, “I got her. She was a little difficult,” he swept away blood from the cut that Y/n had given him, “He’s really got himself a spitfire,” Y/n felt the man’s eyes roam her body, travelling upwards from her bare legs, “Pretty though, he’s got good taste.” After a few grunts of understanding and exchanged words, he hung up, redirecting his attention to a whimpering Y/n.
“My husband’s gonna find us,” she croaked, Y/n’s tears had slowed by then, her faith in John the only thing pulling her through. John would find her, and he’d save her.
“Oh I’m counting on it,” he offered her a toothy grin, filled with nothing but malice, “He’d be a fool thinking we’re gonna let him leave this place alive. See, the big, bad Baba Yaga is going to be so focused on saving his pretty little lady, that he won’t even see us coming and then…” he made a shooting motion with his fingers, “Out he goes.”
‘We’re’? There were more of them?
When a pressure tightened her back, Y/n shifted uncomfortably, passing it off as the faulty chair and all the adrenaline coursing through her. “John’s smarter than that,” Y/n was unwilling to think that John would be so easily distracted; he’d been in the business for twenty odd years, she couldn’t be the person that got him killed. He couldn’t leave her like that, leave them like that. Now more fearful than before, Y/n swallowed thickly, gripping her stomach, feeling her baby kick fretfully, no doubt aware of her mother’s distress. Her breathing grew heavier, though she tried to hide it, her jaw clenching when another wave of pain shot up her spine reaching to her front. As hard as she tried, a small, pained gasp left her lips and she shifted again. As quickly as it came though, the pain was gone. “He’s not gonna fall for a stupid trick.”
“I admire your faith in him,” the man stood, approaching her slowly, and Y/n cowered in her seat. When he reached her, the man brushed some hair out of her face, crouching down in front of her, gently caressing her stomach. His touch was nauseating and it made her blood crawl, “You think you’d ever get remarried if something happened to him?” The question sounded absent and unconcerned, and with his free hand, he twisted a lock of her hair in his finger, “I could probably be a good daddy.”
Y/n spat in his face, “Go to hell you son of a bitch.” Maybe she couldn’t fight him, or run away, but she certainly wasn’t prepared to be a complacent participant.
Enraged; nostrils flared and eyes wide, he grabbed the front of Y/n’s dress, causing her to cry out in fright, “Listen you little bitch, I haven’t killed you yet, but don’t for a fucking second think that I’m not above putting a bullet in your head, I don’t care who your husband is,” he shoved her back and Y/n hit the back of her head on the post, not hard enough to knock her out but hard enough for it to blur her vision and send shocks through out her body. Her breathing grew heavy and her sobs resumed, just as the man let her dress go, grumbling as he walked towards the door, fishing a wrinkled pack of cigarettes out of his pocket.
Tumblr media
John got into his car, his hands and the white shirt on the inside of his suit stained with splatters of blood. Without giving it a second thought, he dropped the last gun he’d used in the space between the driver and passenger seats. Hurriedly, he used his bloodied fingers to send the pictures he’d taken as proof that the job was done. It hadn’t been as hard as he anticipated, there were about ten people in the warehouse, the headquarters for a drug operation. John didn’t know what Dimirti’s beef with them was, not that he cared. All he wanted was to get his wife and child home safely.
After sending the pictures, John got his Mustang started, brashly pulling down the sun visor, his shoulders slumping when he saw a polaroid of him and Y/n, held back by the black elastic strap. It was the first picture she’d taken with the camera he’d gotten her; they were sitting on the sofa at home and she was kissing his cheek, so much had changed since then. Directly beneath that was one he’d recently added; an ultrasound print, one from the day they’d found out that they were having a girl. It had been one of the best days of his life, right up there with the day he met Y/n, the day she agreed to come home and their wedding day.
Then it hit John. Like a bullet to the chest.
His best days were all because of Y/n.
Trying to shake off his despair, John swallowed tightly, holding the steering wheel in a death grip, pulling out onto the lonely street, speeding into the traffic on the main road. Expertly, John navigated the streets, narrowly avoiding other cars, almost causing an accident when a text came through. Swiping the phone up from his lap, he opened it, barely keeping his eyes on the road, it was a shared location along with the words, ‘Well done, hope you can drive fast, we’re getting impatient.’ When a picture of Y/n, with her lip split and her cheek looking sore and red, John jerked the wheel, his heart rate speeding up faster than he thought was possible.
Thankfully, he had considerable knowledge on the address on where Y/n was being kept and didn’t need to closely follow the directions. John’s foot was heavy on the gas as he pulled onto the freeway, intent on the shabby barn just outside the city.
Tumblr media
At some point, Y/n had fallen asleep, though a sharp pain had her gasping as she awoke abruptly. It was worse than what she’d felt earlier; sharp and persistent, and the throbbing of her head only seemed to make things worse. Groaning, she shifted restlessly, waiting until it was over before she looked around. Still in the barn, still tied to the chair.
Y/n had no idea how much time had passed, but she did know that it was enough time for her muscles to start feeling stiff, her mouth was dry too and she was exhausted beyond compare. All Y/n wanted was to get back to John, safe in their home. With a reinvigorated desire to escape, Y/n started wiggling her wrists, trying to wean them out of the cable ties, wincing when the plastic cut into her skin instead of coming loose.
“What the hell are you doing?” Her captor’s voice billowed as he slammed the creaky door behind him, approaching Y/n slowly, knowing full and well that she wasn’t much of a threat.
After a yelp of surprise and a defeated sigh, Y/n stopped; she’d already been knocked around enough. She didn’t answer, opting to shift her gaze to the floor a few feet in front of her. “So this is Mrs. Y/n Wick,” upon hearing the new voice, her head snapped up. Next to the man was another, much older and better dressed in a suit with bowler and scarf, “Pleasure to meet you,” he grinned cheekily. His Russian accent was thick, and Y/n didn’t have the slightest clue on who he was, but she didn’t know that he wasn’t anyone good, “I’m Dimitri, and I heard Boris here didn’t introduce himself. Boris, apologize to the young lady.”
Snorting his short laugh, Boris apologized halfheartedly, “Sorry princess.”
Y/n cringed at the nickname, opting to stay silent. The closer Dimirti got, the more she tried to recoil into the chair, “No need to be scared, it’ll all be over soon,” his grip on her chin was far gentler than Boris’ had been, but it still made her fearful, “Shame you have to die before you meet your baby.” Y/n swallowed tightly, quiet tears warm on her cheeks, “You know, I met your John not too long ago, we’re good friends.”
“You kill friends?” Y/n managed meekly.
Dimitri chuckled, “Only if they want to kill me first. I’m not a fool, and I know that after this little stunt, that’s exactly what he’s going to do. And I can’t let that happen,” he smiled coldly. When he let her face go, Dimitri turned on his heel, walking away as if he hadn’t just given her the most frightening news of her life.
Y/n breathed heavily, mostly from fright, though, when the cushion beneath her, along with the skirt of her dress, her underwear and the inside of her thighs felt instantly warm and wet, she gasped loudly. Neither Boris nor Dimirti paid her any mind though, and all Y/n could do was hope John showed up in time so their baby wouldn’t be born in the same room as murderers.
Tumblr media
It felt like ages since her water had broken and the time between the sharp, intensifying pains were becoming shorter. Y/n had tried to count the minutes herself, but had lost track well over three times. It was hard to think with everything going on; Dimitri and Boris were conspiring quietly, her head still hurt a little and she was torn between hiding her situation and just letting things happen.
Upon she heard a ruckus outside, Y/n didn’t think she’d ever be so relieved by gunshots. Her only hope was that John was the one firing them. Thankfully, it wasn’t long before she found out; John was barreling through the door, fighting off a burly man, shooting him in the head before shoving him away. At the sight of him, Boris aimed a gun and Dimiti came up to her again, grabbing Y/n by the hair and putting a gun to her head, “Easy John,” he drew his attention.
“We had a deal. Kill everyone by five and you let her go, those were your words,” John’s baritone was low and husky and carried a coldness that Y/n had never heard in it. He looked far different than Y/n was used to too, sure, she had seen him in his work suits but that evening there was a hardness in his dark eyes and a determination in his gait. He was different, and it scared her.
“We did,” Dimirti sucked his teeth dramatically, “But you should know better than to trust me John. Fight if you want, but you aren’t leaving this place, and neither is she.”
Y/n’s breaths hitched, her lips quivered and her hands remained at the base of her stomach, trying to focus on not crying out in pain, all while hoping that the night wasn’t ending with a bullet in her head.
“Let her go,” John warned, “She’s not…” there was a crack in his exterior, Y/n could easily hear it and it made her head snap up. His eyes had softened too as he instantly returned to the man she knew and loved, pleading with Dimitri, to just let her go, “She’s not a part of this.”
“Well, she’s married to you, so I’d say she is,” the metal of the gun felt eerily cool against her skin and Y/n could feel Dimitri’s fingers digging into her scalp, “You know, if we kill you first, you don’t have to watch.”
The world seemed to stop for a moment after that, though, when things moved again, it was in slow motion. John ducked, evading a bullet from Boris, his expert aim sending one between Dimitri’s eyes before he could pull the trigger on her. Everything after that, was a blur to Y/n; a violet exchange between John and Boris, shots ringing through and strained grunts. Everything up until John was in front of her, using a knife to burst her restraints.
That time, Y/n hadn’t realized she was crying, not until John was brushing messy hair out of her face and she was shoving him away, the stress of the day and all the hormones sending her into a frenzy, “You promised!” She punched him in the shoulder, “You said you were out! What the fuck is this?”
“I know,” John tried to calm her, grabbing Y/n’s wrists to stop her from hitting him again, “I know, I was- I am. But I owed him a favor and he said if I didn’t do it, he’d kill you,” John sighed heavily, letting her wrists go to wipe tears away, “I’m sorry baby, I am so sorry.”
“You’re sorry? Your bullshit almost got us killed! Our baby could have been born in a fucking barn and you’re sorry? How could you?” Her yells were interrupted by loud sobs, but when another contraction snuck up on her, Y/n instinctively grabbed his hand, crying out in pain for the first time.
When it was over, John still held onto one of Y/n’s hands, lacing the other in her hair so they were nose to nose, “I know you’re mad at me, and you have every right to hate me, but right now, you need to hate me at the hospital, okay?”
It took a minute, but Y/n eventually nodded, “Okay,” she let John help her up, leading her towards his car parked outside, en route to the nearest hospital.
Tumblr media
It had taken nearly twenty hours, filled with tears and swear words. Y/n had spent half of it trying to push John away, too mad to admit that all she wanted was to have him at her side, but in the end, she’d accepted his comfort, submitting to the little moments where he’d rub her back or sweep sweaty hair from her face. John was patient too, taking her outbursts in stride and never wincing once when Y/n held his hand in a death grip. He’d stayed at her side beyond the night, whispering words of encouragement and placing loving kisses on her forehead when she allowed it.
When their daughter entered the world, greeting the room with loud cries, the doctor offered John a pair of scissors to cut the cord, and he readily jumped at the offer. Afterwards, she was cleaned up a bit, swaddled in a blanket and placed on a groggy Y/n’s chest by the time the placenta was delivered. “Oh,” Y/n sighed tearily, “She’s so beautiful.”
“Yeah,” John smiled through his own tears, “She is.” With one arm around Y/n’s shoulders, John gently slid his thumb along their baby’s cheek, in awe of the life that he’d get to watch grow. A baby, their baby, “She’s so perfect.”
Smiling, Y/n turned to John, nearly melting at how pure he looked. Despite the cuts and bruises on his face, he was still strikingly handsome and his gaze held the same joy that everyone expected from a new father, “Hold her,” Y/n encouraged, guiding their daughter into John’s arms.
She looked so tiny in John’s embrace, and to him, she felt much smaller than he'd ever expected. A wave of protectiveness washed through him, and even if it was there before, John’s need to protect her and Y/n was renewed with vigor. A day like the one gone by was never going to happen again, if it were up to him, they’d never feel pain, never hurt or shed a tear that wasn’t brought on by joy. No harm would ever come to his family. “I’m so sorry,” he eventually offered, glancing at Y/n.
“I don’t want to think about that right now,” or ever again. Everything she’d ever wanted was in that hospital room, and Y/n knew that John had made a mistake, but he had done it to be with her and as long as it never happened again, she could work on putting it behind her, there was no way she could even think of living without him anyway. That was the kind of love she had for him, the kind that longed for her to forgive him, despite the deed. “I just want us to be a family,” her eyes brimmed with tears, her smile faltering.
“Me too,” John leaned to kiss her, the gesture filled with love and adoration, their foreheads staying pressed together until their daughter gurgled in John’s arms.
He shifted, still half-sitting next to Y/n on the bed, though with the baby held between them, Y/n’s hand, still hooked up to an I.V cupping her head. They were cooing over her quietly when a nurse walked in with a clipboard, “Have we decided on a name yet?”
John and Y/n exchanged a knowing look; they had decided on a name months ago, one that meant ‘bright light’, which is what their baby had been. The light that had guided them back to each other, the light that had helped them persevere through the worst just over one day before, “We have,” Y/n nodded, “Aileen Wick.”
As Y/n gave the name to the nurse, John kissed her forehead, his lips lingering there as he nuzzled her hair. In that moment, he didn’t think that he’d ever felt more at peace and content; five years ago, he would have never thought that he could be so happy, that he could have the things he did then, a wife, a child; a family of his own.

Sad, Beautiful, Tragic (A Tyrus Songfic)
Summary: Cyrus is tired of being the good boy, hopeful and patient. And he never expected his beautiful love to become a tragedy. A Tyrus Songfic to Sad, Beautiful, Tragic by Taylor Swift.
Words: 2276
AO3 LINK IN REBLOG
~~~~~~~
Long handwritten note, deep in your pocket Words, how little they mean, when you're a little too late I stood right by the tracks, your face in a locket Good girls, hopeful they'll be and long they will wait
“Fuck,” Cyrus groaned, dropping his phone onto his bed, rubbing his eyes with his palms. It didn’t help at all, his eyes feeling rawer and dry more than anything else. The tears that had been there just a few moments ago had evaporated, leaving behind stains and heaviness and rawness. On his bed, his phone lay silent.
Tired. That’s what Cyrus was, tired of waiting, tired of sitting still waiting for what he needed to hear, tired of sticking around while the foundations and pillars crumbled around him. Tired of having hope when there was not even a drop of it around. Tired tired he was fucking tired.
But Cyrus Goodman was the resident good boy, wasn’t he? Good people are hopeful, they have innocence in their heart, holding out faith for the people around them. To the point where faith and hope was a currency and good people were supposed to be generous millionaires.
Another thing good people do was wait. Wait and wait and wait, until time itself would become sand and blow away in the wind. And Cyrus was waiting now, waiting and waiting for something that would probably never come. Because he was a good boy. And good boys waited for however long it took.
Cyrus sank down into his chair, reaching out to trace the pictures pinned up on his board, specifically containing one person.
The one person who Cyrus just needed to see for one second to hear what he needed to hear.
The one person Cyrus wanted to run as far away from as possible just to never see him again.
He, somehow, managed to fall asleep, the cool hum of his air conditioning sounding like the chirping of birds, taking him to a place where things didn’t go wrong, where the nights were bursting with colour in the black sky, where the days were golden. Where ‘I love you’ meant what it was supposed to mean.
When he walked into school the next day, his hoodie up, music blaring through his headphones, he earned the stares and whispers following him down the hall, the evidence of his night visible in his dark circles and puffy eyes. But no one asked or whispered too loud. Because for the first time, good boy Cyrus Goodman’s eyes carried daggers, and everything about him screamed stay the fuck away.
Not everyone got the message.
“Cy,” a voice said, and Cyrus slammed his locker door, revealing the one person responsible.
TJ.
“What do you want?” he said bitterly, and TJ sighed, running a hand through his hair.
“Please, just please stop this,” he said quietly, glancing around. “People are talking.”
“Oh really? I didn’t notice. I didn’t notice the stares or the whispers or the comments,” Cyrus said, his voice growing angrier with every word, the venom rivalling that of bitter almonds.
“Just hear me out,” TJ said, moving to shuffle around in his pockets. He searched for a few minutes, hunting around, and took out many things, still unsatisfied. “Wait, uh, it, it has to, has to be here, somewhere,” he whispered, finally pulling out an almost torn, crumpled up piece of paper with writing scribbled on it, located deep, deep in TJ’s pocket.
“You gonna read me a speech?” Cyrus said flatly, and TJ squeezed his eyes shut, looking down at the paper as he began to read.
“I’m sorry for hurting you, I really, really am. I was an idiot, and I shouldn’t have done that. You don’t deserve that. You never deserve that. Please, just forgive me Cy, please,” TJ read out, the last sentence said right to Cyrus as he folded the paper.
Cyrus stared back, drawing a shaky breath as he felt a tear threaten to roll carelessly down his cheek. He looked down at his feet, drawing a careful breath, shaking his head.
“I can’t do that TJ,” Cyrus said quietly, and TJ gasped slightly, gulping as a tear rolled down his cheek. Cyrus looked up at the ceiling, trying to hold it back. But, he had to face TJ for the next part, walking away as soon as he said it.
“You were too late.”
We had a beautiful magic love there What a sad beautiful tragic love affair
*one week later*
Cyrus trudged home, his feet dragging behind him as choked sobs escaped his lips, a blubbering mess as he pulled himself down the streets. He felt the tiny thread that had held his heart together snap when he walked out of the school halls that day, looking across the courtyard to see TJ talking to his basketball friends, his back to him, his friends laughing.
And TJ joining in with them, laughing without a care in the world.
And seeing him so carefree, so lost in laughter, so happy, Cyrus broke. That thread snapped apart, and his heart fell into pieces, the shards now being swept away by the groundskeeper of the school.
Not because he was happy, although that tore at Cyrus, that only a few days later TJ had moved on, as if without a trace, and he was left behind to deal with the cataclysmic consequences. But it was the fact that his smile reminded Cyrus of the good times, the times that had been the happiest of his life, when they were in love and that was enough.
Cyrus and TJ had been magical from the start. Their hearts wove together to create such an enamouring and enchanting symphony, neither could live without the sound and the feeling it left them with. It shone red in Cyrus’ mind, burning, passionate, blinding. It knocked Cyrus off his feet, the breath being sucked out of his lungs with everything TJ did. Butterflies made their home in his stomach, and he swore that every time he had a date with TJ, his head would go light, spinning with all the emotions racing through his mind.
Beautiful.
Magical.
Red.
Which is why it was such a shame it had to end the way it did.
Cyrus and TJ had kept their relationship hidden but open. So, while they had never explicitly said anything, Cyrus thought, with the way TJ held his hand in the corridors and hugged him, and acted around him, as if he was the only person who mattered, that they didn’t need to say anything for people to see what they were. And he had thought, with the way he smiled at TJ, and held his hand, and hugged him on the basketball court after games, they were on the same page with this.
But oh, the universe is cruel, and it makes even the most beautiful thing a tragedy capable of making the hardest hearts crumble into rubble and tears. Because it turns out, they had never been on the same page.
*2 weeks ago*
“Hey TJ.”
Cyrus paused the search for his books in his locker, peeking out from around the corner as he saw a girl approach TJ, twirling her hair and smiling in the way that Cyrus saw himself smile at TJ when he thought about him. TJ was at his locker, and he turned to face her with his characteristic smirk. Cyrus smiled to himself, deciding to listen in just for the fun of it.
“Hey Sandy,” TJ said with a smile, and Sandy giggled loudly, earning some stares from students walking down the hall.
“So, um, I was, uh, you were amazing at the game the other day!” she muttered, fumbling over her words.
TJ laughed, the sound being a melody of sweetness in Cyrus’ heart. “Thanks, but you have to thank Dan for our win, his basket was amazing.”
“Yeah, yeah Dan was cool,” she said, changing the topic. “So, uh, I was, I wanted to tell you, that uh, I really like you TJ.”
“I like you too Sandy!” TJ responded, and Cyrus wanted to slam his head against the locker in second hand embarrassment.
“Uh, I don’t mean it like that,” Sandy said nervously. “I like, like you.”
Cyrus could almost hear the shift in tone, as the realisation hit TJ. “Oh,” he whispered.
“Yeah,” Sandy said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “So, do you wanna go on a date some time?”
Cyrus let out a small breath, hoping that TJ was kind in telling her no, but what he heard next made him drop his books, his heart plummeting as his head was sent for a whirl.
“Yeah sure. I’ll text you.”
Sandy laughed, walking away as she squealed, and TJ closed his locker and walked away. And Cyrus stood there alone, the words echoing in his mind, a clashing cacophony in his mind as he took time to think.
He said yes. TJ said yes to that girl. To a date. To what he knew would be a date. Why did he say yes? Did he not think about Cyrus? Wasn’t it obvious they were together? They weren’t hiding anymore.
Were they?
Had they ever even been on the same page?
Cyrus felt the world crash around him, or that may have just been the school bell. But he shook his head, tossing aside the thoughts as he made his way to class.
Cyrus let out a shaky breath, thinking back to that horrible time, and all that followed, all that led to him walking away from TJ’s apology, to him breaking down over TJ’s smile in the courtyard.
Distance, timing, breakdown, fighting Silence, this train runs off its tracks Kiss me, try to fix it, could you just try to listen? Hang up, give up, for the life of us we can't get back
*13 days ago*
Cyrus had been incredibly successful in avoiding TJ, his height finally giving him an advantage as he manoeuvred around the crowds. He couldn’t face TJ, and the fact that he heard Sandy gush about her ‘date’ with TJ wasn’t pushing him to communicate.
Finally, TJ cornered Cyrus by the gate of the school, his eyes sunken and accusing as he stared at Cyrus.
“You avoiding me?” he asked, and Cyrus squeezed his eyes shut, sidestepping to walk away from TJ, but he stuck a hand out, grabbing his elbow. “Cy! Talk to me please.”
“Why? Shouldn’t you be with someone else? Isn’t this too public for you?” Cyrus asked bitterly, freeing his hand from TJ’s grasp, walking away. TJ looked confused, glancing around nervously to see if anyone was staring, before chasing after Cyrus in the street.
Cyrus didn’t even need to turn around to know TJ was coming up behind him and he stopped in his path, letting TJ catch up to him.
“What do you mean?” TJ asked, wheezing slightly. Cyrus suppressed a groan, turning around slowly.
“I hope you and Sandy had fun,” he said quietly, and instantly, the look that flooded onto TJ’s face made Cyrus want to scream and run away.
“Cyrus, I, I,” TJ started, but Cyrus lifted his hand, cutting him off.
“Why did you do it, TJ?” he asked, his voice cracking. “Why did you say yes to her? I thought we were being open about us.”
“No, no, we haven’t told anyone,” TJ said, shaking his head, his eyes showing himself being backed into a corner.
“Then what was with all the hand-holding and the hugs and everything?” Cyrus asked pleadingly. TJ looked down, ashamed as he sank into himself, hands stuffed in his pockets.
“I, I just thought that it was cuz we always act like that, and people kept assuming it’s a friend thing, so I kept doing it so we could hide in plain sight.”
Cyrus stepped back, blinking as he processed what TJ was saying. “So, you’re seeing Sandy now.”
“No, no, Cy it isn’t like that,” TJ started, shaking his head and lunging forward, trying to kiss Cyrus to stop the conversation, but Cyrus pushed him off, staggering back.
“TJ, seriously?” he yelled, stepping back. “You aren’t even listening to me. What’s the point?”
With that, Cyrus shook his head, walking away, tears rolling down his face as he ran back home, TJ left on the street, looking at the sky.
That was when they gave up. Or at least, when Cyrus gave up. Because they wouldn’t find their way back, even if they tried to.
We had a beautiful magic love there What a sad beautiful tragic love affair
Cyrus made his way back to his room, the tears slower and more like a silent stream than a violent hiccupping disaster. He went into his room and began to take down everything that reminded him of TJ. His posters, the pictures, the books, the notes. Soon enough, he was ripping things off the wall, flinging books on the floor and balling up hoodies and tossing them away. He went on a rampage, purging his room of everything that even remotely reminded him of the green-eyed boy he had loved so much.
As the redness faded from his vision, Cyrus looked at his floor, covered in torn up paper, strewn clothes and crumpled book pages. Gulping, Cyrus wiped his forehead and sunk to the ground among the debris of his relationship, staring at the bare walls around him.
As if everything around him had been TJ and now he was alone again, trying to fill himself.
There was no more magic in his life.
To Ben
Summary: Ben’s your best friend.
Word Count: 1029
Warnings: none
A/N: I’m back! I was inspired by a video I had to watch for my Spanish class, and I think it broke my writer’s block! Enjoy!
Tumblr media
“Ben, I’m scared.”
The second he heard your timid voice over the phone, Ben shot off the couch and ran out of his house.
“Where are you?”
“My hotel room, I just need you to talk to me.”
“I’ll be there in ten.”
He was at the door, pounding furiously in seven and a half minutes. Your mother let him in, her piercing glare softening when she realized who was at the door.
“She’s in the other room, she won’t come out until you talk to her.” With that, your mom left, most likely off to round up the rest of the bridesmaids.
Ben knocked softly on the door to your hotel room, finding you sat on the bed with your head in your hands. He knelt in front of you, his palms warm on your knees through your dressing gown. He noted the garter on your thigh, mumbling “lucky bastard” to himself. He hoped you didn’t hear. This definitely wasn’t the time.
You did.
“Are you gonna tell me what’s wrong, or am I gonna have to guess?” Ben asked, a soft smile tugging at his lips.
Ben had always been able to read you like a book. Having been the closest of friends since birth, he was your forever ally, who’d had your back when the rest of the world turned against you. It was soap opera level dramatic when phrased that way, but true nonetheless. Ben couldn’t think of a friend he trusted more than he trusted you, and he knew there was no one you trusted like him.
“I’m just scared,” you repeat, removing your hands from your face. You hoped you hadn’t messed up any of your makeup; your makeup artist would kill you if you did. “This is a huge commitment and my non-committal self isn’t so sure I can go through with this. I feel like I rushed everything, and I’m afraid to put that dress on,” you gestured to the white gown in the corner of the room, hanging delicately on its hanger. “I’m afraid to make it all real. I can play princess all I want, pretending I’m not about to change my entire life. But the second I put that gown and veil on, it means I’m about to be someone’s wife. That I have to share everything I do, and while rationally I know I’m mature enough to go through with it, there are so many unknowns, I can’t… I can’t let anyone down. And I’m terrified I’m going to.”
Ben couldn’t respond immediately, he was too caught up in just looking at you. You looked radiant, a tragic contrast to how you felt. Ben had always thought you were beautiful, and he didn’t expect any less from your wedding day.
“You love him, right? Really, really love him? Like, it makes you sick to think about if you focus on it too long?”
You stared at him blankly. Blinking away a few tears, you laughed softly and nodded, “Yeah, I do. Everything is so easy with him. Always has been.”
“So what are you afraid of? All he’s asking you to do his love him. As long as you do that to the best of your ability, you won’t let anyone down.” He took your shaking hands in his, his thumbs stroking your knuckles gently. “You can tell me anything.”
“I just, what if I’m left all alone up there?”
He laughed, almost too loudly given your current state, his head dropping to your lap. “You wouldn’t be. Never in a million years. A man stupid enough to leave you at the altar deserves the death penalty. What else are you worried about?”
“What If one day I’m not good enough? You know, he wakes up one day and thinks, ‘I could’ve done better’. I want this to be it. I don’t want to be a statistic, almost fifty percent of marriages end in divorce, and I can’t go through that. I can’t put someone else through that, either. I’m scared of loving too much and not being loved that much back.”
Ben’s heart broke, and if he sat and thought, he was sure he’d feel it physically. Two splintered halves, laying heavy in his chest. How could you be so blind?
“He talks about you like there is no one else on this planet,” Ben started. “He loves you more than you’ll ever know. Drives his mates absolutely mad with how much he talks about you. Hasn’t stopped talking about you since he met you. He’s crazy about you. He’s actually thinking the same things you’re thinking right now. So, I can assure you, there is nothing you need to be afraid of. Well, except your mother if you’re late to your own wedding.”
“You’ll be there, right?” Your eyes were glassy, tears threatening to fall. You couldn’t do this without Ben.
“Absolutely.” He kissed the back of your hand. “I wouldn’t miss my best friend’s wedding for anything.” With that, he pulled you to your feet and into a hug before leaving the room.
You stood in the lace gown nearly an hour later, heavy mahogany doors separating you momentarily from the end of the aisle and the start of the rest of your life. The rest of your life that’d you’d be legally married for, if all went according to plan. Your palms started to sweat at the thought of it, and had your gown not been steamed and pressed within an inch of its life, you would’ve wiped your hands across the fabric to ground yourself… and get rid of the sweat.
Before you were ready, the doors flew open, revealing a standing crowd of your closest family and friends with beaming smiles on their faces. You found Ben, stood in a black tuxedo with Joe, Gwilym, and Rami at his side. Your eyes never left his own, his smile growing wider until you reached him.
He took your hands in his, the same way he had forty five minutes earlier.
“Still scared?” He whispered.
“Absolutely not.”
You left the church that day a married woman. Married to your best friend. To Ben.
55. Wish You Were Here, Pt.3
Tumblr media
Storybrooke. Present. Convent of the Sisters of Saint Meissa. (Belle is giving birth in the convent. Emma holds her hand and helps with her breathing as one of the sisters deals with the delivery.) Dream World. Boy: “Can you push me on the swing, Mommy?” (In a darkened playground, Belle walks towards her son on the the swings.) Belle: (Exhales deeply:) “I was... I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find you.” Son: “You'll always find me when you need to.” Belle: (Taking a seat on the swing beside him:) “So, look. We don't have much time now, okay? Your father's coming, and he will use those shears. So, please, if you know how to stop him, you have to let me know.” Son: “You know what you must do.” Belle: “No. No. (Stands:) No. No. I can't. I won't. There has to be another way.” Son: “There isn't. As you said, we're out of time.” Belle: (They embrace:) “I love you. I love you more than anything in the world.” Son: “I know. And I won't ever forget it. Oh, and Mother... don't forget the book.” Belle: “What book?” Storybrooke. Present. Convent of the Sisters of Saint Meissa. (Belle gasps and finally snaps back to the here and now just in time to give birth to her son.) A Short Time Later. (Belle rocks the baby in her arms as Emma leads the Mother Superior into the room.) Mother Superior: “Oh, congratulations.” Belle: (Laughs:) “Thank you, Blue.” Mother Superior: “Emma said you wanted to see me.” Belle: “Yeah. Yeah, I need your help.” Mother Superior: “Of course. Anything.” Belle: “Here. (Pats the bed and Mother Superior takes a seat:) Will you be his fairy godmother? And will you take him somewhere safe, somewhere far away from all this?” Emma: “Belle, what are you doing?” Belle: “Rumple will never stop. This is our son's only chance. (To Mother Superior:) Please take him, just until this is all over.” Mother Superior: “But you don't know when or if that will come to pass.” Belle: “I believe it will. I have to believe it will. Yeah. (Voice breaking:) Take him.” Mother Superior: (Taking the baby into her arms:) “Of course.” Belle: (Sniffles:) “Thank you, Blue. There's, uh... there's one more thing. Emma? (Emma hands over ‘Her Handsome Hero’. To Mother Superior:) Read it to him so that he knows that I'm always there for him. (To the baby:) My Gideon... strong and brave... a hero for all time. (Kisses the baby’s head:) Don't you ever forget that I love you.” (Mother Superior waves her hand and both she and the baby begin to glow. Elsewhere, Mr. Gold pushes open the convent doors and strides inside. Entering the room, he finds Emma and Belle sitting on the bed. Wordlessly he takes in the scene before something outside the window catches his eye. Mother Superior flies away with baby Gideon.) Mr. Gold: “No. You abandoned our son? After everything?” Belle: (Scoffs:) “I didn't abandon him! I gave him his best chance at a good life. And after what you did, that is clearly a life without you in it.” Mr. Gold: “Belle...” Belle: “Rumple, no! It's over. Okay? It's over! There's nothing left for you to say.” Mr. Gold: (Glances at the window, then back:) “What's his name? What's our son's name?” Belle: “Why? So you can use it to find him? You can do what you will with me, but I will never tell you.” Mr. Gold: “I would never hurt you, Belle. Never. But I will find our son.”
Tumblr media
Enchanted Forest. Past. (Belle tracks down the parents of the stolen baby and returns the child to them. Unseen from the distance, Rumplestiltskin watches the happy reunion.) Storybrooke. Present. Mr. Gold’s Shop. (Mr. Gold enters the back room of his shop.) Evil Queen: (Sitting in the darkness:) “Someone lose another son?” Mr. Gold: “Don't. Not now.” Evil Queen: (Turning on a light:) “Or what? Hmm? (Laughing:) Oh. I bet Belle really hates you now, huh?” Mr. Gold: “Go.” Evil Queen: “No. I'm going to enjoy this. I went to a lot of trouble for this to see what happens when you poison your love.” Mr. Gold: “I did no such thing. (Points, at her accusingly:) You did.” Evil Queen: (Laughing:) “Oh, no. You did. By making me an enemy. Okay, yes, I did the actual dosing of the tea. But you forced my hand. (Standing, crossing the room:) Oh, worry not. It'll be easy to fix, no? Just tell her. Oh, wait. She won't believe you, will she? Tragic.” Mr. Gold: “I may not have crossed a line today. But you most certainly did. And I'm gonna make sure you pay for it.” Evil Queen: “Oh, please. If you haven't found a way to kill the woman who murdered your own son without enlisting my help, I'm not all that concerned.” Mr. Gold: (As the Evil Queen starts to leave:) “One thing I thought you knew about me by now, Your Majesty... I play a very long game. And you? You're nothing more than one of my pawns.” Evil Queen: “Good luck finding your son. Again. I hear fairies make wonderful mothers.” (The Evil Queen leaves. For a few moments, Mr. Gold merely stands with pain etched across his face. Then, he begins taking his frustrations out on several items in the back room, smashing them to pieces.)
Tumblr media
Blanchard Apartment. (Henry, Regina, Snow and Emma are gathered in the apartment, having discussed the days events. David lays slumbering on the bed.) Snow White: (Sighs:) “Okay. That's enough despair for one day. (Motions towards David:) I'm going to wake him up. If you would please fill him in on everything?” Henry: “Of course.” (Snow moves to the bed and climbs on beside David. She is about to kiss him when something stops her.) Emma: “Are you okay, Mom?” Snow White: (Shakes her head:) “No. (Slides off the bed and picks up something heavy:) She's watching us.” (Snow throws the item at the bedroom mirror, smashing it. Meanwhile, via her mirror, the Evil Queen smiles as her curse is clearly having the desired effect on her victims.) Regina: (Having seen enough:) “This is all my fault. (Heads towards the door:) I can't let them suffer for it.” Emma: (Walking, blocking her path:) “Regina, where the hell are you going?” Regina: “To stop the queen. I can hurt her. I'm the only one who can hurt her. Anything that happens to me will happen to her.” Emma: “No, we decided this in the mirror world. I am not letting you sacrifice yourself.” Regina: “Well, I'm not asking for permission.” Emma: “Oh, I see, we’re still doing this. (Folds her arms:) So did you forget what's about to happen to me? That I have a death sentence.” Regina: “But you can fight that future, Emma. I know you. You will fight it.” Emma: “But that doesn't mean I will win, and the only thing that makes that bearable is knowing that Henry will still have you. I can't be there, so you have to be. You know I'm right. We have to find another way to defeat her. Together.”
Tumblr media
Mr. Gold’s Shop. (Emma and Regina sneak into Mr. Gold’s shop to find the place wrecked.) Emma: “Whoa. Oh, well, someone had a temper tantrum.” Regina: “Do you really think we'll find something in here to stop the queen?” Emma: “Maybe. (Notices something laying on the floor:) But I think I just found something else. (Crouches beside it:) This is it. This is the sword from my vision. It's here.” (Emma reaches to grab the sword but the vision flashes before her eyes once more.) Regina: “Emma, are you okay?” Emma: (Panting, grabs the sword:) “Yeah. I think it's safe to say this is what did it.” Regina: “This is the sword that killed you?” Emma: “Will kill me.” Regina: “Why would it be in here?” Emma: “I don't know. But now that we have it, maybe we can finally find who's responsible.” Regina: “The figure under the hood.” Emma: (Stands, holding the sword:) “Yeah. And then we can stop them. You see? This is why we keep fighting. The Savior is a title I've thought about running from numerous times, but I never have, because I want to protect my family and my friends and the people that I love. The vision still bothers me but I can’t give in to it. Just like you can’t let the Queen get to you.” Regina: “Yeah, but the Queen could very well be the one under the hood.” Emma: “Well then I say we take the fight to her.” Regina’s Vault. Exterior. (Regina and Emma, carrying the sword, head towards Regina’s vault.) Emma: “Do you really think you've got something in your vault that can tell us more about this thing?” Regina: “The hooded figure who uses it is fated to kill you. First we need to figure out who that is.” Evil Queen: (Appearing in a cloud of smoke, blocking their path, flirtatiously to Emma:) “Ooh, nice sword, sweetie.” Emma: (As Regina conjures a fireball:) “Regina, don't let her get to you.” Regina: “It's too late.” Evil Queen: (Chuckles:) “What are you gonna do? Throw a fireball at yourself? The only way to hurt me is to hurt you, which is why your girlfriend won't be able to stop me. See? Love is weakness. (To Emma:) Say hi to Sleeping Beauty... or is it Sleeping Daddy?” (Enraged, Emma slashes at the Evil Queen with the sword, cutting her cheek. Immediately regretting this, she turns to Regina.) Emma: (Gasps:) “Are you...?” Regina: (Touching her own cheek to find no damage:) “I'm... fine.” (Emma turns back to the Evil Queen, who attempts to heal herself. Much to her dismay, her magic is unable to heal the cut. Determined to end things, Emma lunges once more with the sword, but the Evil Queen escapes.) Emma: (Looking down at the sword, amazed:) “We can kill her.”
Tumblr media
Alleyway. (The Evil Queen reappears in an alleyway, sitting upon Regina’s car. As she touches the cut on her cheek again, she is approached by Mr. Gold.) Mr. Gold: “Thinking of going for a drive?” Evil Queen: “Rumple, I'm in no mood.” Mr. Gold: “Looks like the Savior's found a weapon. Now, normally I'd be upset that someone stole from me, but in this case, I think I'll let Ms. Swan's pilfering slide, and I can focus on finding my son. And you can prepare... (Places a golden cuff on her wrist:) to die. Now, no matter where you go, I can find you. You see, what you did to me, to Belle, was unforgivable. So if, at the end of the day, the Savior has yet to dispatch of you, rest assured that after I find my son, I will gladly finish the job.” Blanchard Apartment. (Emma and Regina have returned to the apartment as Snow continues to slumber.) David: “So it can hurt the queen without hurting Regina.” Emma: “The Evil Queen needs to die.” (David’s cellphone rings and he goes to answer it.) Henry: “You sure about this, Mom?” Emma: “In this case, the cliché is true. I was... born for this. With this sword, I can save all of us.” Henry: “That sword is what kills you. How do you know this isn't how you die... facing her? What if she's the figure under the hood in your vision?” Emma: “I can't sit out every battle because I think it might be my last. I'm the Savior, kid.” Henry: “You're also my Mom.” (Henry walks away as Emma’s hand begins to shake, the vision coming to her yet again.) David: (Returning:) “Hey. That was Leroy. The Evil Queen was spotted headed down Main Street.” Emma: (Clenches her hand into a fist:) “All right.” Regina: “Let's go.” Emma: “No. You can't. The only way you can hurt her is to hurt yourself, and I can't let you do that. (Takes Regina’s hand:) I've got this. You need to stay here with Henry.” Regina: (Sighs, lifting their hands and kissing Emma’s:) “Good luck.”
Tumblr media
Storybrooke. Main Street. (Emma and David walk down the street when they hear a woman’s distress call.) Woman: “Help me!” (Quickly, the sheriffs run towards Granny’s diner.) Granny’s Diner. (They enter to find Jasmine tied to a chair.) Emma: “Jasmine!” Evil Queen: (Coming out of the kitchen holding the lamp:) “Ah, ah. This is about me. It's always about me.” Emma: “Damn right.” (Emma raises the sword but the Evil Queen begins to magically strangle Jasmine.) Evil Queen: “I can snap her neck before you get a step closer. (Emma looks to Jasmine as she gasps for air, then takes a step backwards:) That's better.” (The Evil Queen rubs the lamp and Aladdin appears.) David: “Well that’s new.” Evil Queen: “My genie.” Aladdin: “I'm sorry.” Evil Queen: “I believe I have three wishes.” Aladdin: “Go ahead. Wish. They always come with a price.” Evil Queen: “That they do. Which is why I'm not going to wish for something for me. (To Emma:) I'm going to give you something... something you've always wanted, something you confided about to Aladdin.” Emma: “You heard us?” Evil Queen: “Don't you know by now? I hear everything. You wished you weren't the Savior. So that's exactly what you're going to get. (To Aladdin:) Genie of Agrabah, I wish... that Emma Swan's wish, to have never been the Savior... be granted.” Emma: (Charging forward:) “No!” (Aladdin raises his hand and Emma disappears.) David: “Emma! What happened? Where did she go?!”
I made a Taylor Swift Music Education Lesson that covers each album, in order, and my favorite songs from said album. I included bits of each album’s prologue and background information on each album, plus my personal opinions on each. I made this for some coworkers that want to learn more about Taylor, feel free to look it over and pass it on to anyone you’re trying to convert someone into a Swiftie :) There is a Spotify link for a playlist I made that has all these songs. You can find that at the bottom :)
Welcome to your Taylor Swift Music Education Lesson. Please read carefully.
 For your education and enjoyment (hopefully), I have included a detailed track-list of all the songs on your Spotify playlist. These songs appear in order of album, beginning with Fearless and ending with reputation. I did not include Taylor’s debut album in this lesson. It’s a great album, but has a heavy country influence and was written when she was 14, so it is difficult to relate to and/or isolating to those who do not appreciate country music. Within each album, there is no specific order. As I introduce a new album, I provide you with a bit of background information to give you a more thorough understanding. This background information begins with a blurb taken directly from the prologue that Taylor wrote for said album. With each track title I have included my favorite lyric from that song. You may also see some asterisks with notes scattered throughout. I couldn’t resist. The songs I chose are either a) my favorite, b) a fan favorite, c) generally iconic in nature, or c) songs I think, or hope, you will like. My favorite song off each album is indicated with multiple exclamation points. Let’s begin.
 FEARLESS: “To me, “FEARLESS” is not the absence of fear. It’s not being completely unafraid. To me, FEARLESS is having fears. FEARLESS is having doubts. Lots of them. To me, FEARLESS is living in spite of those things that scare you to death.”  Fearless is Taylor’s second album and was released in the fall of 2008 when Taylor was 18. It is actually the most highly-awarded country album of all time. Fearless won Album of the Year at the 2010 Grammy’s when Taylor was 20 years old. Taylor is the youngest person to ever win that award. There are 13 tracks on this album, and 8 were written solely by Taylor. This album cemented me as a stan, and the songs saved my life in high school. I have Fearless tattooed on my back, and I truly believe that I wouldn’t be who I am today without this album. I’d probably be dead in a gutter somewhere. Joking, but seriously, high school was rough. Thank God for Tswift.
1.      Forever & Always!!!!!!!!!!!: “It rains in your bedroom when everything’s wrong. It rains when you’re here and it rains when you’re gone.”
2.      Fifteen: “Back then I swore I was gonna marry him someday, but I realized some bigger dreams of mine. And Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind, and we both cried. ‘Cause when you’re fifteen and somebody tells you they love you, you’re gonna believe them.” *Abigail was Taylor’s best friend in high school, and they’re still friends today.*
3.      Love Story: “This love is difficult, but it’s real. Don’t be afraid, we’ll make it out of this mess.” *This is Taylor’s first #1 song. It went #1 on both country and pop radio. She attributes her career to this song. She wrote the song in 20 minutes solo on her bedroom floor after an argument with her parents over a boy.*
4.      The Best Day: “I’m thirteen now and don’t know how my friends could be so mean. I come home crying and you hold me tight and grab the keys. And we drive and drive until we find a town far enough away, and we talk and window shop ‘til I’ve forgotten all their names. I don’t know who I’m gonna talk to now at school, but I know I’m laughing on the car ride home with you. Don’t know how long it’s gonna take to feel okay, but I know I had the best day with you today. *Taylor wrote this song for her mom.*
5.      Breathe: “People are people, and sometimes it doesn’t work out. Nothing we say is gonna save us from the fall-out.”
6.      Fearless: “We’re drivin’ down the road, I wonder if you know I’m tryin’ so hard not to get caught up now. But you’re just so cool running your hands through your hair, absent mindedly making me want you.”
7.      Tell Me Why: “Why do you have to make me feel small so you can feel whole inside? Why do you have to put down my dreams so you’re the only thing on my mind?”
 SPEAK NOW: “What you say might be too much for some people. Maybe it will come out all wrong and you'll stutter and you'll walk away embarrassed, wincing as you play it all back in your head. But I think the words you stop yourself from saying are the ones that will haunt you the longest. So say it to them. Or say it to yourself in the mirror. Say it in a letter you'll never send or in a book millions might read someday. I think you deserve to look back on your life without a chorus of resounding voices saying 'I could've, but it's too late now.' There is a time for silence. There is a time for waiting your turn. But if you know how you feel, and you so clearly know what you need to say, you'll know it. I don't think you should wait. I think you should speak now.” Speak Now is Taylor’s third album and was released in the fall of 2010 when Taylor was 20. There are 14 tracks, all written solely by Taylor. There are no co-writers on this record. After Taylor won AOTY for Fearless, many of her critics said that it was impossible that she carried her weight in those writing sessions. Basically, the songs on Fearless were so good that a lot of people didn’t believe that she actually wrote them. To prove them wrong, she decided to write the album entirely by herself. This album is the fan favorite, and is my second favorite. I feel like this album was way ahead of its time. Speak Now is the kind of album I’d expect a musician to write towards the end of his/her career once they stop caring about crafting the perfect song, and start making great music for the hell of it. Most of the songs on Speak Now are over 5 minutes in length with many clocking in over 6 minutes. Definitely not suited for radio. Taylor is known for painting stories in her lyrics, and I’d say Speak Now does that the best. I met Taylor during the Speak Now Era, the most lauded of eras amongst fans. To have seen the Speak Now concert is a huge deal in the Swiftie fandom. The concert was absolutely magical. If you don’t believe me, you’re welcome to come over and watch the live DVD. Most of the general public knows next to nothing about Speak Now because none of the songs really charted on radio. However, Speak Now is the first of her albums to sell a million or more copies in the first week (a pattern not broken thus far. #blessed). Speak Now Era was sort of the golden age because she had proved herself to be incredibly talented and cemented her place in the music industry, and yet her PR stunts were at a minimum. Nobody hated her yet, and she kind of went back under the radar despite being at her prime. It was downhill from there, but we were all oblivious to that fact. We were just so blissed out, we couldn’t see the impending doom on the horizon. I could honestly write an entire thesis on Speak Now. Anyway, it was a strange time, indeed.
8.      Mean: “You have pointed out my flaws again, as if I don’t already see them.” *Like I said above, the songs on Speak Now were not widely popular and didn’t chart on radio, with the exception of this one. ‘Mean’ won Country Song of the Year at the Grammy’s in 2012. Taylor wrote this song as a way to cope with relentless and over the top, mean-spirited criticism from a specific music critic named Bob Lefetsz. Suck it, Bob.
9.      Mine: “But we’ve got bills to pay, we’ve got nothin’ figured out. When it was hard to take, this is what I thought about.”
10.  Last Kiss: “How you’d kiss me when I was in the middle of sayin’ something, there’s not a day I don’t miss those rude interruptions.”
11.  Haunted: “Come on, don’t leave me like this. I thought I had you figured out.”
12.  Never Grow Up: “You’re in the car on the way to the movies, and you’re mortified your mom’s droppin’ you off. At fourteen there’s just so much you can’t do, and you can’t wait to move out someday and call your own shots. But don’t make her drop you off around the block, remember that she’s getting older too.” *Taylor wrote this the night she moved out of her parent’s house and into her first apartment in Nashville.*
13.  Sparks Fly: “You’re the kind of reckless that should send me runnin’, but I kinda know that I won’t get far.” *Taylor first performed this song back in 2006 at a random live show when she first started out. Fans recorded it and it went viral. For years fans begged her to record it for an album. She did! Thank you, Taylor! We are #blessed.*
14.  Enchanted!!!!!!!!!!!!: “The playful conversation starts, counter all your quick remarks like passing notes in secrecy.”
15.  Back to December: “It turns out freedom ain’t nothin’ but missin’ you.”
 RED: “My experiences in love have taught me difficult lessons, especially my experiences with crazy love. The red relationships. The ones that went from zero to a hundred miles per hour and then hit a wall and exploded. And it was awful. And ridiculous. And desperate. And thrilling. And when the dust settled, it was something I’d never take back. Because there is something to be said for being young and needing someone so badly, you jump in head first without looking. And there’s something to be learned from waiting all day for a train that’s never coming. And there’s something to be proud of about moving on and realizing that real love shines golden like starlight, and doesn’t fade or spontaneously combust. Maybe I’ll write a whole album about that kind of love if I ever find it. But this album is about the other kinds of love that I’ve recently fallen in and out of. Love that was treacherous, sad, beautiful, and tragic. But most of all, this record is about love that was red.” Oh, Red. I have so many thoughts about you. For starters, Red is Taylor’s fourth album and was released in the fall of 2012. Red is comprised of 16 tracks. Like I said previously, the Speak Now Era was such an incredible time, and Swifties didn’t want to let it go. We didn’t want things to change. I think the Red Era is the only era that Swifties didn’t welcome with open arms. We just didn’t know how to feel, and were afraid of things changing. But Taylor was headed in a more pop direction, and we could all sense it. Of course, Taylor had always been pop, or country pop, but that’s neither here nor there… And so, Red was Taylor’s “pop” debut, because she wrote three songs with pop hitmakers Max Martin and Yohan Shellback. But, it was also her rock debut if you ask me. Red was like a patchwork quilt of music: differently styles, production types, collaborators, producers. Taylor was trying new things and flapping her wings. And it worked. At first, I was hesitant to leave Speak Now behind, but Red quickly became my favorite album and still is. Taylor’s best songs are on Red. That is unanimously agreed upon in the fandom and throughout. Red is Taylor’s crown jewel, her zenith. Unfortunately, Taylor suffered a lot of hate and backlash for her dating life during 2012 and 2013, and that really clouded the success of Red. Like Taylor has said before, she was promoting a massively successful album and touring the world, and all people wanted to talk about was her personal life and it broke her heart. Well, Taylor, it broke mine too. Next to Fearless, Red is the album that helped me most in life. Red chronicles a disastrous heartbreak from beginning to end. The anger, the frustration, the sadness, the regret, the hopelessness, the pining away. You name it, she wrote about it. If you’re ever heartbroken, put on this album. (Except I hope that never happens to you!!) It’s interesting to me that she wrote the songs for Red while she was touring Speak Now, because we thought she was really happy at that time. But, what do we know? We never really know. Well, Red was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2014 Grammy’s and lost to Daft Punk. Whoever announced the winner that night really dragged out the R when he said “Random Access Memories Daft Punk”. So naturally, Taylor thought she had the award and her face lit up. Only to see that she did not, in fact, win. So, she stood up and clapped, although still looking a little miffed/embarrassed. Well, what do you know, the next day the internet is tearing her apart and making fun of the face she made when she thought she had it and then realized she didn’t. She became a gif, a meme, everything. I have seen the waves of irrational, baseless and crude hatred and bullying of her on the internet over the years and that, to me, was the worst. UNFORGIVABLE! So, anyway, it didn’t win the award, but fans and music critics unanimously agree that it should have. Speak Now might be the fan favorite album, due to the attachment to the Speak Now Era, but we all agree that Red is her best work. Alrighty, let’s dive in! Finally, right?!
 16.  I Knew You Were Trouble: “Flew me to places I’d never been,  ‘til you put me down.”
17.  Everything Has Changed ft. Ed Sheeran: “All I feel in my stomach is butterflies, the beautiful kind, makin’ up for lost time, taking flight making me feel like I just wanna know you better.” *Taylor and Ed are best friends in real life. They claim they wrote this song whilst having In n Out burgers on her trampoline in the backyard. I believe them.*
18.   Treacherous: “Nothing safe is worth the drive and I will follow you home.” *This song is cowritten and produced by Dan Wilson from Semisonic.*
19.  Sad Beautiful Tragic: “Distance, timing, breakdown, fighting, silence… the train runs off its tracks.”
20.  Red!!!!!!!!!: “Moving on from him is impossible when I still see it all in my head, in burning red.”
21.  Holy Ground: “We took off faster than a green light go, yeah you skip the conversation when you already know.”
22.  All Too Well: “I’d like to be my old self again, but I’m still trying to find it.” *The original version of this song is over ten minutes long. This is, unanimously, Taylor’s best song of all time. Check any list by any critic and this song will be at the #1 spot. I think, for me, Red and All Too Well are tied for favorites.*
23.  Begin Again: “You throw your head back laughin’ like a little kid. I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny, ‘cause he never did.”
24.  The Last Time ft. Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol: “You wear your best apology, but I was there to watch you leave.”
 1989: “I wrote about moving to the loudest and brightest city in the world, the city I had always been overwhelmed by… until now. I think you have to know who you are and what you want in order to take on New York and all its blaring truth. I wrote about the thrill I got when I finally learned that love, to some extent, is just a game of cat and mouse. I wrote about looking back on a lost love and understanding that nothing good comes without loss and hardship and constant struggle. There is no ‘riding off into the sunset’, like I used to imagine. We are never out of the woods, because we are always going to be fighting for something. I wrote about love that comes back to you just when you thought it was lost forever, and some feelings never go out of style. I wrote about an important lesson I learned recently… that people can say whatever they want about me, but they can’t make me lose my mind. I’ve learned how to shake things off. I’ve told you my stories for years now. Some have been about coming of age, some have been about coming undone. This is a story about coming into your own, and as a result… coming alive.” Oh man. I have a lot of feelings about this one, too. And not the good kind. Let’s start with facts. 1989 is Taylor’s fifth album and was released in the fall of 2014. There are 13 songs. And that’s it for the facts, because now I’m going to dive into my feelings and opinions about this one. Which are basically facts, but anyway... So, like I said previously, Taylor did not win AOTY for Red and that bothered her. She went home to her hotel room, gorged herself on In n Out burgers, and cried (Dramatic much?!? It’s okay though ‘cause it was a rough night. And I’m not making this up, she really told us that’s how the night went down. POOR TAY!). Next thing you know, she wakes up in the middle of the night with an epiphany that she is going to make a sonically cohesive pop album. She said the problem with Red was that it wasn’t “sonically cohesive”. Swifties hate the word sonically cohesive. It hurts me that I am even typing it. If you are in my presence do not say the word sonically cohesive, okay? Moving on. In a way, she was right. Red WASN’T sonically cohesive, but that’s kind of what we loved about it. Every song on Red sounds exactly like the feeling the lyrics portray. We didn’t think it was an issue. But Taylor wanted to hone in on a specific sound and perfect that and keep things neat and clean. And, of course, that sound was going to be pop. EXCEPT SHE’S ALWAYS BEEN POP BUT SURE. So, Taylor decides to try 80s synth pop (I guess?) and go with that. And so 1989 is born. Look, I love the narrative and inspiration behind 1989. I am really inspired by the prologue I shared up there. It was all about independence and friendships and not needing a man because she had stopped dating. But she also said she had to stop dating because the hate got so bad. So, the whole single life thing was kind of forced on her, but whatever, she embraced it. Except we all know she wasn’t *really* single (Hello Karlie Kloss!!). When the first single from 1989, Shake It Off, came out, I cried incessantly. I was inconsolable, and my friend’s dad had to make us grilled cheeses to cope. Shake It Off never grew on me, and to this day it’s my least favorite Taylor song EVER (it’s borderline unbearable), but the rest of the album did grow on me. To a degree. The problem with 1989 is that a handful of the songs are incredible, and the rest feel incomplete/watered down/like filler. I feel like she really worked to perfect a few of the songs and geared them in a way to be popular on radio, and the rest were afterthoughts. 1989 is the only Taylor album where the best songs were chosen as singles (except for Shake It Off). With Taylor’s albums, usually the best songs feel like hidden gems because they’re never chosen for radio, and so the public doesn’t know about them. I’m happy that everyone got to enjoy her songs from 1989, but it also felt like there was nothing left over for the fans that felt special. The best songs on 1989 ended up overplayed and overdone. 1989 is the first tour I did not attend. I can be honest with you and say I regret that. 1989 isn’t a bad album, it’s a good album, but as far as Taylor’s work goes, it’s just not the best. But it did win Album of the Year in 2016, making her the first woman to win that award TWICE.  To go a little deeper, it wasn’t even so much the 1989 album that I disliked, I think it was more the Era/Taylor in general during 1989 that didn’t jive with me. She got obsessed with appearance, and status, and there were some strange business dealings that left fans feeling used and abused. Before 1989, Taylor felt like the “girl next door” (I do realize she’s a celebrity and not the girl next door at all, but her perfected relatability factor became part of her marketing image), but during 1989 Taylor threw that all away to be #squadgoals with the Victoria’s secret models. Whatever, it was a strange time. Glad that is over. ALSO, listen to Ryan Adams cover of this album. It’s better than the OG at times. Aight aight, let’s dig into these sick beats (ugh).
25.  Welcome to New York: “When we first dropped our bags on apartment floors, took our broken hearts, put them in a drawer. Everybody here was someone else before, and you can want who you want, boys and boys and girls and girls.” *Taylor moved to NYC the summer gay marriage was legalized in New York. Thanks for the shoutout Tay.*
26.  I Know Places: “Just grab my hand and don’t ever drop it, my love. They are the hunters, we are the foxes, and we run.”
27.  Clean!!!!!!: “It was months and months of back and forth, you’re still all over me like a wine-stained dress I can’t wear anymore.” *Despite 1989 being my least favorite album, this song is one of my all-time favorites. It’s brilliant how she compares a relationship to an addiction. And Imogen Heap comes through for some dope ass background vocals.*
28.   Out of the Woods: “The monsters turned out to be just trees, when the sun came up you were looking at me.” *Ryan Adams cover is amazing, and so is an acoustic piano version Taylor did for the Grammy museum. Check youtube.*
29.  You Are In Love: “You keep his shirt, he keeps his word.”
30.  Style: “I say ‘I’ve heard that you’ve been out and about with some other girl. He said ‘What you heard is true, but I can’t stop thinkin’ ‘bout you.” I said ‘I’ve been there too, a few times.’”
31.  Wildest Dreams: “You see me in hindsight, tangled up with you all night, burning it down. Someday when you leave me I hope these memories follow you around.”
32.  This Love: “Tossing, turning, struggled through the night with someone knew… Lantern burning, flickered in my mind for only you, but you were still gone and gone, gone and gone.”
 Reputation: “We think we know someone, but the truth is that we only know the version of them they have chosen to show us. We know our friend in a certain light, but we don't know them the way their lover does. Just the way their lover will never know them the same way that you do as their friend. Their mother knows them differently than their roommate, who knows them differently than their colleague. Their secret admirer looks at them and sees an elaborate sunset of brilliant color and dimension and spirit and pricelessness. And yet, a stranger will pass that person and see a faceless member of the crowd, nothing more. We may hear rumors about a person and believe those things to be true. We may one day meet that person and feel foolish for believing baseless gossip. This is the first generation that will be able to look back on their entire life story documented in pictures on the internet, and together we will all discover the after-effects of that. Ultimately, we post photos online to curate what strangers think of us. But then we wake up, look in the mirror at our faces and see the cracks and scars and blemishes, and cringe. We hope someday we'll meet someone who will see that same morning face and instead see their future, their partner, their forever. Someone who will still choose us even when they see all of the sides of the story, all the angles of the kaleidoscope that is you.” Last album?!? I can’t believe we’re here already! Reputation, Taylor’s 6th album, was released in the fall of 2017 and consists of 15 tracks. At the start, reputation was a wild ride. During the 1989 Era, Taylor managed to crawl out of the pit of hate and despair that the Red Era brought, and she soared to popularity. I’ve noticed this happens with Taylor, the love/hate comes in waves. One day everyone loves her again, and then the next they hate her. During 1989 Taylor was flying high. Highest grossing tour, AOTY, “dating” (I have to put that in quotes, but that’s a whole other can of worms) Calvin Harris… but, nothing good can last forever, and so literally everything fell apart. Messy break up with Calvin, even messier drama with Kimye (can’t even get into that). Things weren’t going so well. Taylor had reached overexposure and she went into hiding for almost a year. No performances, no candid shots, no interviews, no mags, nothing. She usually releases a new album like clockwork every two years, but she skipped her typical release season and tacked on another year to the wait. Well, while she was hiding, Taylor was doing what she does best.. making music. At some point during the summer Taylor put all of her music back on streaming accounts, and so I knew then that something was brewing. She finally announced the name of the album and released the first single, “Look What You Made Me Do”. The day she dropped “Look What You Made Me Do” was one of the craziest days for just about everyone, let alone Swifties. It felt like the world was literally collapsing over this song. The internet was breaking. A few people loved it right away, some people thought she had cracked and was finally losing her damn mind, and I was just confused and depressed. The day it was released I spent a large portion of the day crying. I cried and clutched onto my 1989 CD (but I never even liked 1989 that much… which shows how much I was worried….) But, before I knew it, I was bopping along to the song and loved it like the rest. And once the music video came out, I realized that everything was going to be okay. If you haven’t seen the music video, you need to. It’s iconic. It broke Youtube’s record for most views in 24 hrs. A few more songs came out before album release and I wasn’t *that* crazy about most of them. Turns out that reputation is like all of Taylor’s albums before 1989, the best songs were not released as singles. Back 2 Basics, guys. The fans get everything, and everyone else gets the scraps. When the album finally did come out I was overjoyed. Now let’s see why!
33.  Delicate: “Is it cool that I said all that? Is it chill that you’re in my head? ‘Cause I know that it’s delicate.”
34.  Getaway Car: “I wanted to leave him, I need a reason.” *Jack Antonoff produced this song and many others on reputation. We are #blessed. I recently read somebody say that Jack has a stranglehold on pop music. I WISH!!*
35.  Dancing With Our Hands Tied: “I loved you in spite of deep fears that the world would divide us.” *Beginning at some point in 2014, Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift entered a torrid love affair. It’s possible they are still together today. That’s a discussion for a later date. Anyway, this song is definitely about her. Funny how some people think Taylor hates gay people (why?) when really she writes songs for them. Thanks Tay.
36.  Dress: “I woke up just in time, now I wake up by your side.” *Also for Karlie.*
37.  Call It What You Want!!!!: “I brought a knife to a gun fight, they took the crown but it’s alright.”
38.  I Did Something Bad: “They’re burning all the witches, even if you aren’t one, so light me up.”
39.  Don’t Blame Me: “For you I would fall from grace just to touch your face. If you walk away, I’d beg you on my knees to stay.”
40.  King of My Heart: “I’m perfectly fine, I live on my own. I made up my mind, I’m betting off being alone. We met a few weeks ago, now you try on calling me baby like trying on clothes.”
41.  New Year’s Day: “You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi. I can tell that it’s gonna be a long road. I’ll be there if you’re the toast of the town babe, or if you strike out and you’re crawling home.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Fuck. This is going to be really very long. And I am saying that knowing how long my previous rants were. Those were short compared to what’s about to come.
I absolutely, completely and unconditionally love Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It is the singular most perfect TV show in existence. Nothing I have ever seen has lived up to it and I doubt anything I will ever see will live up to this show in its whole. This is my second favorite show on my top five list and it’s held that spot for the past fifteen years (which mind sound strange that I put the “most perfect TV show in existence” on spot two, but… I’m fully aware of all the flaws in my most favorite show and that I love that one with my nostalgia goggles on, but it will still always be my number one and not even Buffy’s perfection can kick it off the throne).
Now, just because I love something doesn’t mean I perceive it as flawless. I am fully aware of its flaws. But nothing is a hundred percent perfect.
I don’t even know where to start, but I think the beginning is the best.
What I hate about most supernatural shows is how “They are now thrown into this strange, new world with monsters… and immediately forget all about their non-supernatural friends” that literally every other show with supernatural elements does.
Not Buffy. When she first meets Willow and Xander, the two kind of only had each other and their buffy who gets killed off right at the start. And even then, Willow and Xander were the non-supernatural normal friends. And they became so important.
The fact that Buffy has this group of ordinary people behind her and really just human characters and that they back her up, that alone is awesome.
The Scooby Gang in general is awesome.
That is my favorite thing about the show. The relationships between the characters and how important they are. That the friendship never takes second place to the romance, like how many other shows like to write it. Because regardless of who was added to the plot and who left again, in the very end, it always came down to Buffy, Willow, Xander and Giles and I will always cry at the show’s finale when it is just the four of them, parting ways to go into their very last battle, I mean fuck I’m crying right now just writing this because it was just so heavy with the emotions and the importance of their friendship.
They are the heart and backbone of this show and the show never forgot it.
Many shows forget themselves, they forget the values and beauty they once represented, the longer the show goes on. And Buffy never did. Sure, it lost itself in the middle - but we’ll get to that when we get to that - but it caught itself and never declined fully.
Buffy Summers is an amazing character. She’s a girly-girl who loves lollipops and talking about boys and whining. She’s the most badass female character ever written in TV who saves the world repeatedly and comes back from the dead just to do it again, who has been beaten down by life in the cruelest ways possible and still kept on surviving but never without the scars. Her struggles were never just shrugged off. They became themes that were being dealt with realistically. For fuck’s sake, we had a plotline about her working at a burger shop because yes, this is a show taking place in reality and bills are something that needs to be paid even if you save the world. She is not a perfect character, she made a lot of bad decisions along the way, but that is what makes her human. She is not some character created for an agenda to show that “girls can do anything boys can” and is thus forbidden from doing anything overly girls, as many writers mistakenly do when trying to write strong female characters, because a female is not powerful and strong just because she belittles women who like wearing pink and dressing prettily and who see “girl” as an insult. That is not how strong women work.
Women are complex characters, just like every character should be. They don’t have to solemnly be one way so they aren’t the other way. And Buffy is a beautiful example of the complexity of it all.
Willow Rosenberg is an amazing character. She’s one of the characters in TV that had the biggest character development. This shy, demure girl that became the most badass bitch around who could kick your ass into a parallel dimension with the blink of an eye. The fact that she was literally the first lesbian I ever saw only made her more amazing for me. You see, I started watching Buffy with season 4, which first premiered in Germany in 2001, because, well, I was 10 when I started watching that show since earlier was kind of a little too young in my mom’s eyes, but she’s been watching it for years at that point and I kept lingering in the doorway with pleading eyes because vampires and witches and werewolves, mom, please, until I got to watch it. Right in the season where Willow and Tara fell in love. And I was legitimately in awe, because the concept of two women falling in love was new to me. I never met a real life lesbian before and on TV, the highest of their feelings were Will & Grace with the gays, but lesbians? Never seen that before. It was amazing for me.
And I will forever be grateful that Willow and Tara were my first representation of lesbians that I met.
Xander Harris is an amazing characer. I mean, seriously, I could do this for nearly every character but I’ll only be doing it for the Big Three for the sake of time, okay? He was this fearful, dorky, kinda useless normal dude in the beginning, but he had such a strong backbone, he always knew he’d be there for his friends. And he always was. What made him so special was that he wasn’t special. He was just A Guy. Where Buffy was the Slayer and Willow became the most powerful witch in existence, he was just a normal guy. The original Matt Donovan and Stiles Stilinski and Simon Lewis (despite him turning into a vampire later on, I will still count him for this category). The quippy human best friend to the supernatural. But he adapted. He found his own place among the supernatural and his own way of prodicing for them, helping them.
It amuses me that actually, I kind of started watching this show with its weakest season. Season 4. But let’s start with the other seasons first (I mean, I warned you guys that this is gonna be long).
Buffy was my first high school TV show. All shows I had watched up to that point were family comedies like Married with Children and Full House. But this was the first real look into how American high schools work and I loved it. The first three seasons in itself are the best of Buffy. I’m not even able to pick one season as the best because I like the whole stretch of it.
The dynamics, the characters, the villains, the plots.
Cordelia Chase is - argh, I didn’t want to do this for every character, so I’ll keep it short - another amazing example at character development. From the shallow, air-headed Barbie to a strong ally and friend who fought with her head held high and I will never forget Angel for ruining her.
And okay, if I take a sentence for Cordelia, I can really, truly not skip Giles. Giles, who will forever be The Mentor. When I hear “mentor figure” or “father figure”, I will always first and foremost think of Giles. He was the father and guide to them all, but he was not the one strong pillar, he too had his struggles. It’s one of the things that made me love the second Percy Jackson movie because Anthony Stewart Head is who I pictured as Chiron when reading the books and it is the most perfect casting they could have made.
The first three seasons arched beautifully together, tying the struggles of the high school students turned demon hunters, the funny elements and self-awareness, the serious undertones.
The scene at graduation when the class gave Buffy an award for being Class Protector is one of my favorite TV moments, because this… this acknowledgment of “Yeah, we weren’t always there for you and we didn’t bother getting to know you, but we know you’re there and we know what you did for us” and honestly, I’m crying again, this is ridiculous.
They graduate from high school and then… life continues. Like. Life continues in a realistic way. They go to college, or not in Xander’s case. They struggle with what to do with their lives, they try to find their own paths in what I consider the most realistic portrait in TV. In others, it’s not just “Yup, they college. We’ll mention college every now and again, but it never interferes with the demon hunting” like with most others. Buffy struggles with college work and demon killing, Willow soaks it all up because it’s exactly her world, Xander doesn’t know what to do with it, Giles struggles with what to do with his life in general.
Still, I consider season 4 the weakest season because the Initiative was… It wasn’t used well enough. It appeared and then it kind of disappeared again and in this show where the lore and world-building are so rich and on-point, the Initiative was the one hit and miss they did. Not to mention, I don’t like zombies and Adam creeped me out and was the weirdest major Big Bad that they ever had in that show.
But it brought back Spike and made him a more complex character than just “Bad guy with bad attitude and insane girlfriend”.
Which is a good cue-in for the ships and love-stories, actually.
Buffy is and perhaps will always be the only franchise where the love-triangle clicks for me. Angel/Buffy? Yes. Oh god, what a beautiful, tragic love-story, please give me more of them, OTP all the way. Spike/Buffy? Oh, the pain but they are so good for them and when he’s good, he’s the best, please give me more of them, OTP all the way.
I literally can not decide on who to ship her with. With most love-triangles, I either do not care about both options, or I want to cross the badly written female out of the equation and want to dive right into the slash fiction, or there’s only one good pairing in the options anyway.
The tragicly ironic thing is that for Willow, I have and always will ship her most with Oz though. Willow and Oz were that perfect soft warm ship for me, when I got to finally watch the first three seasons as the reruns hit Germany.
Willow and Tara, while beautiful at times, were also very tragic. The way Willow lied to Tara and manipulated her was just so unhealthy. I do love them together, I just think that I love Oz and Willow a bit more.
Xander is a mess. Like. Seriously. Him and Cordelia. Him and Anya. I can not decide which one I like more in the end, but think that, at this point, it really does become clear that I can cut this show into two parts. The first three seasons of high school where Angel/Buffy, Xander/Cordelia and Oz/Willow are just all the yes, as well as the post graduation seasons where Spike/Buffy, Xander/Anya and Willow/Tara are just all the yes. Which really, truly fascinates me.
Because it’s really rare for a show to get me on board with its canon couples in general. This show does an amazing job on that too.
So, season 4 was kind of flawed in the way the Initiative wasn’t grounded enough in this world and how weak its endgame villain came off.
Season 5 brought the legit only thing about this show that I hate. Dawn Summers.
Urgh. It makes me shudder to just think about her. She’s such an awful and useless and stupid person. And yes, I’m saying person here, because “character” would blame it on the writing and make it sound like she’s a badly written character, which she is not. She was intended to be the annoying, dumb, useless little sister. Not every character can or has to be flawless or lovable. She’s just that… one that isn’t.
And she just becomes worse in season 6, honestly. She is such a self-centered brat that has no concept of the struggles of others. Like. Yes, I understand that she has problems and that she suffers too, but so does everyone and if someone doesn’t have time for her, she acts out. They just… They do have a lot on their plates, trying to save the world and keep you from being homeless, you know? Which, okay, was a solid portrayal of an angsty, bratty teen, I suppose, because teenagers, as I recall from my own time as one, are fascinatingly blind for the struggles of adults. Doesn’t make her less annoying though.
I take back what I said earlier, about not being able to pick a favorite season. Season 6 is my favorite season, which in itself is baffling. Normally, I pick one of the very early seasons of a show because they keep declining afterward until they crash and burn.
Season 6 did the exact opposite of what other shows do. Where other shows feel the need to top it all off, go wilder and broader and more brutal and bigger enemies until it becomes an unrealistic mess, this one just…
Three human boys.
That’s the enemy of the season. Just three stupid idiots who play pranks on the good guys, for the most part. And it was the perfect choice, because instead of having to deal with those major Big Bads, we get the chance to deal with the characters. The one thing I keep complaining about in other shows, how they’re too overcrowded with plot to even give the characters any time to deal with stuff or interact.
Buffy did it.
They stepped back from the Big Bad in favor of dealing with the bigger issues. Dawn being not a real human and not dealing well with that. Buffy having died and being brought back. Willow becoming addicted to magic. Xander… completely fucking up the best thing in his life.
We have character plots in this season.
Character plots that still end in a big battle of epic proportions when Willow literally becomes a Dark Witch powerful enough to destroy the world. But instead of it being some epic battle, it’s one of the… quietest fights ever and it’s brought home in such a beautiful way because it’s about grief and loss and pain and love.
And those. Those are the moments that make Buffy the most perfect TV show to me. It never loses its humanity. Maybe the most emotional scene in all of this show happened in season 5, when Joyce Summers died and Anya talked about her death, about the concept of death. That will never cease to make me cry.
And season 7 was the perfect ending. The way it rounded things up, it brought every single thing full circle, all the way to that above mentioned scene of Giles, Buffy, Willow and Xander parting ways before the very final battle, among all the loudness of everyone, it is brought to the forefront one last time that it is them.
The way they solved the whole Slayer thing, the Big Bad they chose for their final season, the development. Nathan Fillion as one of the creepiest bad guys ever. The fact that, even after all those seasons already, Buffy still had a struggle, had to prove herself.
I have one or two major bones to pick with it, because I hated when the group decided “Lol, nope, we don’t need you, Buffy”… that broke my heart. It breaks my heart every single time I watch it because even her friends tell her they need a break from her. I mean, I love how she found safety and support in Spike’s arms after that scene, but that it happened at all and that after things of course go wrong without Buffy, they all come crawling back… it makes me angry. It was important to bring them all as a team together, but to me it will always feel OoC coming from those she had fought alongside with for seven years, those who should always have her back who always did have her back.
And, when talking about bones to pick, aside from weak season 4 and Dawn Summers, there’s just one more major thing that I have a problem with.
Hank Summers. For those who forgot because he’s literally only been in two episodes, that’s Buffy’s dad. Because Buffy has a father. The “(half-)orphan”-trope is very overused, but I genuinely think this show would have benefitted from it.
Hank Summers does nothing. Not even when his ex-wife dies and his teenage daughter and barely-above-twenty daughter are left all on their own. He doesn’t pitch in with money, he doesn’t visit, he doesn’t even think about taking Dawn in and taking care of her himself.
I mean. Same as with Dawn, it can just be said that he is a Bad Person and a Seriously Bad Dad, but… Give me a break, Buffy deserved better than that. Having him be dead would really have been better, especially when Joyce dies and he just… “Nope, no interest in those kids”.
And on that note, let me add Faith (who I accidentally forgot about before). She’s... probably the most complex character, because it’s easy to hate her, but it’s also kind of easy to love her. She’s definitely the most flawed character and that’s what makes her good. Because she’s bad. She gets the same powers as Buffy, but unlike other Slayers, she gets morally corrupted. But she also finds her way again. She’s a badass bitch and she definitely brought something new to the table. I loved how flawed she was, because she was not a good person, but when needed, she was one of the good guys. They never pretended to turn her around into a good person though, she always stayed true to herself.
The reason I’m adding her here is because I feel like she messes up the mythology a little. Part of me really loved how they brought in Kendra after Buffy died, because “When the Slayer dies, another Slayer awakens” and that they remembered to keep with that when Kendra died. But after that, this kind of really fell apart and is one of the biggest plot-holes to the show, in my eyes.
Buffy died three times. But only her first death awakened a new Slayer. Now, you can argue that with that, the mantle was passed on, but... When Buffy came back from the dead, she still had her Slayer abilities. She was still the Slayer, she wasn’t suddenly back to being the normal girl she was before she turned sixteen and became the Slayer. So technically, considering she was still the Slayer, her other deaths should have also passed on the mantle and thus awoken two more Slayers.
Not to mention... in the history of Slayers, Buffy was the first one to be brought back to life? I always found that hard to believe. No one ever used CPR or magic on a Slayer before? I doubt it.
So in this very rich and grounded lore and mythology, I have a problem with “We got Kendra and then we got Faith and... we don’t bother explaining why we never got any additional Slayers”.
Now, as we conclude this, let me wrap up what exactly makes Buffy the Vampire Slayer the most perfect TV show to me.
1.) The superb writing.
Not just the plot as I laid it out above, the way they knew when to step back and when to give character plotlines instead of big and loud action plots. Simply the dialogues alone. This show holds up. It’s a time-capsule of the 90s, sure, but its writing and dialogues are still funny, emotional, heavy, with exactly the right words chosen. The writing on this show is in every aspect overwhelmingly brilliant.
2.) The characters.
They’re individual, they’re well-developed, they have their own plots and relationships and they are all important, not just the titular character. It inverted tropes with its characters, it managed to put strong female characters out there without having “being a strong female character” be their only and defining character trades.
3.) The story.
Okay, this is technically part of the writing too, but I think it deserves its special shout-out. Because this show has a consistent lore where not all of a sudden all the time something new is shoehorned in and retconned in and where it comes apart by the seams the more seasons it has because you notice the writers didn’t think ahead so far. No, this world is fleshed out, its lore is established and as it is. It’s consistent.
Yes, it’s not flawless, but damn it’s the closest to flawless that I’ve ever seen.
Great Comet Things
I got to see Great Comet on Sunday and it was absolutely amazing. The whole cast was amazing and the show is so artistic and surreal. Below is a bunch of things I noticed that were either very cool, unexpected or both. Warning, it’s very very long:
ACT I
The show doesn't actually start with Pierre singing. He comes out with his accordion then you hear Natasha yelp a really sad "No!" then run on stage with Andrei at her heals. They have a moment, and she looks really sad and he looks Very in Love and takes a necklace off his neck and puts it on her. She grasps at it and he runs out the door behind Pierre, representing the war
Prologue is actually really funny. Like it's sort of funny on the recording but the way people move and act w their faces makes it very comic.
Marya is a little terrifying. She plays "strict yet Kind" out to the audience like, "yes, I'm KiNd!!! Believe me, That's an order!!"
Anatole is actually really funny. I had totally been imagining him as this impossibly smooth figure and He Isn't. Like yes, he's very smooth at times but he is also totally used for comedy sometimes and is severely melodramatic.
Oak's Pierre is really dimensional. He's very subdued and gentle but there's also a roughness to his voice when he gets really disgusted in himself or in the world and he moves really smoothly and naturally between Pierre's gruffer, darker side, and the cute awkward warmness which he also does wonderfully.
Denée's Natasha reads really well as this young girl who has always been loved and appreciated and is now really struggling for the first time with her happiness and she's really bold and a little self absorbed and this really brings out the changes which I will get back to later
Courtney Bassett was wonderful as Mary!! She's plays her really sweet and shy but also clashes really well w Natasha.
Private and Intimate is really intense but can also get very funny. Nicholas Belton is hilarious but his Bolkonsky has a lot to him I guess? He moves really slowly and he does the fragile thing really well for a dude who is like Bolting down the aisles as Andrei. I'm very scared of old prince Bolkonsky.
The Lighting in No One Else  oh my go d. The song is so beautiful but the visuals. The falling snow. It's heartrending. Ahhhh.
Marya Dmitrievna is the best ever. I love her.
The Opera is Funky as hell. Paul Pinto is a firecracker. What a cool dude.
I didn't expect Anatole to actually get that excited about Natasha. I sort of read it as pure manipulation (it's still manipulative don't get me wrong) but he really does adore her. He really cares about whether or not she likes him and he fawns over her.
The Duel is intense as fuck. Amber Gray walked passed me at some point (i can't remember if it was during the duel or not but) she is a goddess, damn it. I love her.
Nick Choksi plays the sociopathic Dolokhov you get in the book better in person than I would've guessed
Pierre does this thing when he gets shot where he ducks and stays ducking for a long time bc he thinks he's a dead man and there's a long silence.  And then he looks up like “oh!” and Oak made the cutest face ever when he realized he won the duel.
Ok I didn't like dust and ashes when I heard it on the soundtrack and saw it at the Tony's but the way Oak does it is an absolute show stopper. It blew me away. I love it. It's now one of my favorite songs in the show. Pierre is sitting in his Hole or whatever. The sad hole. And he just. Opens himself up and it's great. There was at least a full minute of applause for him.
SUUUUUNDAY MORNING TIME FOR CHURCH
I love sunday morning but i do miss Sonya’s part from the off broadway soundtrack
When Helene comes in during Charming, Natasha is dressed in nothing but her corset  and a tiny little underskirt and it makes her so vulnerable and frightened its an interesting dynamic. Amber Gray is a powerhouse of an actress and a singer and I love her. She has the coolest cloak too.
There’s this thing in Charming where Helene rips Natasha’s necklace from Andrei off and Natasha looks so guilty and upset about it. It really breaks the excitement from the yay, dresses part. She tosses it into Pierre’s depression hole and it landed in his book. Pierre picked it up and looked hilariously confused.
The ball is at least 80% same sex couples which was pretty cool. The ending is beautiful but it gets really chilling as the act draws to a close.
ACT II
Letters was bomb af. I’m gonna note again that I love Okieriete Onaodowan. After saying that he wrote the letter, Dolokhov crouches really malevolently watching what he orchestrated unfolds.
When they pass the love letter to Natasha, the audience has to pass it across the aisle but the girl didn’t know what to do when it got to the end, so Denee leaned really desperately with her arm reached out waving sweetly and asking for the letter until she got it
INGRID MICHAELSON IS A REALLY AMAZING ACTRESS AND SHE WRECKED ME
Preparations is a bop. Nick Choksi is a gift.
There’s a bit at the beginning where Anatole is carrying a big ol bag and he looks like he plans to walk up the stairs with it but then WHOOPS ANDREI IS SITTING ON SAID STAIRS. Anatole does absolutely nothing in acknowledging this- he simply sees he’ll need to take the other stairs and walk away.
I LOVE PAUL PINTO OK
There’s that one post about struggling to keep your sleeves rolled being gay culture and...Lucas Steele took a really long time to get his sleeves rolled up. I snorted.
I have very few words to describe the next few songs so i’ll sorta skip forward a little and just...trust me when I say they’re amazing
Seeing Pierre kick Anatole’s bitch ass is a ton of fun but its much less fun the way its staged because thats when natasha poisons herself and its painful
Natasha Very Ill was so tense and painful
One of the nice things Natasha sings about Andrei in act one becomes a letter to him which we see him open and read. He looks kind of lovestruck and then scared and he tucks the letter away, running off with the ribbon still in his hand. He comes on with this ribbon in his hand a bunch of times, and once, when he looks really beat up and scared, he has the ribbon tied around his gun. The last time he brings this ribbon on stage is in Pierre and Andrey, where its been returned around the parcel of Natasha’s letters.
GOD I love Nicholas Belton’ Andrei. There’s so much pain he’s trying to hide and it’s just being pressed down and hardening into rage. He’s really rough and a bit frightening but its so clearly from a place of sadness. His “No, I am well,” is almost pitifully unconvincing. The scene is so heavy. I could go on about this song forever. He does something on “never speak of that again” where he lashes out and sort of throws his hand out at Pierre’s chest and Pierre looks genuinely frightened by him. He’s really sympathetic even though he’s so cold. In three minutes he captures SO much of Andrei Bolkonsky
In Pierre and Natasha, Denee is completely transformed. She holds the railing and sways likes hse’s falling and walks like each step is over broken glass. Seeing her liveliness shatter is so utterly tragic. She’s brilliant.
Oak’s Pierre is so kind and good hearted. He was really crying during Pierre and Natasha, and it was so full of love. When he did the confession, he worked up so much courage to say it, and he was still sniffling from crying and there was such love in his voice that it richened and softened beautifully. It was so tender and beautiful.
THE ENSEMBLE SINGING IN THE FINALE. Their voices weave a whole sky of stars. Pierre coming to an understanding is illuminated by their soft moonlit voices. The whole moment is as clear as crystal and it is a perfectly executed awakening. It felt deeper and realer than I’d ever imagined.
I was crying a lot
Bonus: Stagedoor
Josh Canfield and Nicholas Belton came out first. I was very awkward but they were both Darlings. Josh photobombed my picture with nicholas belton and nicholas belton was like “oh looks like you’ve got a photobomber” and somehow I didn’t notice until like an hour later
A bunch of really cool ensemble members came out
Nick Choksi came over and he was still wearing his very heavy eyeliner. Someone said “you’re rocking the guyliner” and he looked quite pleased. I told him preparations is like the best song and he was like “hell yeah”
My friend (@levizoe) told Paul Pinto that his performance was really moving. He thought this was a reference to the show as a whole but I knew. I knew this was about him, Balaga, specifically
Everyone lost it when Oak came out. He had a Harry Potter t-shirt on and was carrying a skateboard. What a cool dude. He’s huge but not as tall as I anticipated. so many muscles. I gave him some are and he was like “Oh this is pretty cool.” then he looked at it and called it kind of amazing and I died. Then he went inside to put it away and all the people who he didn’t get to yet were giving me some serious side eye i felt bad (he came back tho ofc)
Ingrid Michaelson has very pretty eyes and is very nice. She looked so tired tho i felt bad.
IN CONCLUSION I AM DEAD. Sorry for the length of this post. Its such an amazing show. I love them all so much.
Tagged by @eloarei. This isn’t normally my jam, but it looked like fun!
PICK YOUR TOP 10 SHIPS WITHOUT READING THE QUESTIONS
Let’s get this show on the road!!  (I had more trouble that I thought I would coming up with ten ships)
1. SwanQueen (Emma Swan/Regina Mills, Once Upon a Time) 2. Victuuri (Victor Nikiforov/Yuuri Katsuki, Yuri!!! on Ice) 3. Carterwood (Peggy Carter/Dottie Underwood, Agent Carter) 4. K/S (James T. Kirk/Spock, Star Trek TOS) 5. Yumikuri (Ymir/Historia Reiss, Shingeki no Kyojin) 6. Miss Celie/Shug Avery (The Color Purple) 7. Fierrochase (Alex Fierro/Magnus Chase, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard) 8. Matt Holt/Takahashi Shirogane (Voltron Legendary Defender) 9. Tanatsu (Tanuma Kaname/Natsume Takashi, Natsume Yuujinchou) 10. Toharu (Azuma Tokoku/Ichinose Haru, Akuma no Riddle)
DO YOU REMEMBER THE EPI/SCENE/CHAPTER THAT YOU FIRST STARTED SHIPPING 6? ~ Miss Celie and Shug Avery. Hoo boy. So we're talking stage musical here, I'm still working myself up to reading the book. I walked into The Color Purple with only the vaguest idea what it was about. I thought Shug and Celie would be good for eachother one way or another pretty much as soon as Shug was introduced, but. The song 'Dear God - Shug', where Celie is bathing Shug. That song shook me so badly, I just stopped breathing. Then I started crying, silent tears all the way through 'Too Beautiful for Words'. I just shut down, I couldn't think about or process anything but what was happening on the stage. I mean, no kidding, a woman a few rows up collapsed and had to be brought out by EMTs and I only vaguely noticed.
YOU EVER READ A FIC ABOUT 2? ~ Victuuri! Sure, tons. My favourite kinds are missing scene drabbles and timeline alternations (you know the 'what would have happened if things had gone just a little differently' kind of thing.). Though I'm currently reading a wonderful AU loosely based on the beginning of Stranger Things (No, really).
HAVE A PICTURE OF 4 EVER BEEN YOUR SCREENSAVER/PROFILE PICTURE? ~ K/S. I wanna say no, but I can't swear to it. It's been a long time. They could have been and I've forgotten.
IF 7 WERE TO SUDDENLY BREAK UP TODAY, WHAT WOULD YOUR REACTION BE?
colleen skip this question there are spoilers
~ Fierrochase. Look. When you start with non-consensual decapitation, it’s gonna take more than a breakup to surprise your audience. It’d actually be pretty interesting if Magnus and Alex had a real fight or a falling out, because it could make for great character development. They’ve been cautious with opening up to one another, but both of them are kind of prickly people (Alex especially). If there’s conflict between them it’d also keep Alex from falling into an overshadowed ‘love interest’ niche to Magnus’ Main Character. So long as Alex isn’t the Bad Guy in the fight and it furthers Alex’s character development, I’m down.
okay colleen you can come back
WHY IS 1 SO IMPORTANT?
~ SwanQueen! Okay so I already got heavy with you once, but bear with me. Emma and Regina are so important to me, because they were the first time I'd ever been able to look at two women and see them with a future together that I could imagine for myself. I've known I'm a lesbian since I was thirteen, but for a long time I didn't really know how a future would work for me in that context. I didn't know where to begin picturing what it would look like to be in love with a woman, or for a woman to be in love with me. Regina and Emma's deeply complicated and emotional relationship was the first time a relationship between two women had ever felt real to me. I know it's not canon, and I know I'm being baited, but I can't really bring myself to care very much. They way they look at one another is too important to me.
WHICH ONE HAS THE STRONGEST BOND?   ~ Tough one! I'm giving it to Shug and Celie. SwanQueen is powerful and K/S are literally telepathically bonded soulmates, but. Shug and Celie are canon, and the difference they made in one another's lives is stronger and more beautiful than I can credit to either of the others.
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU READ/WATCHED 10’S FANDOM? ~ One and a half times for the anime, once for the manga. Akuma no Riddle is a lot deeper than it's usually given credit for, but it's still not the kind of story that leaves me with a burning desire to rewatch/read it.
WHICH SHIP HAS LASTED THE LONGEST? ~ I'm pretty sure Kirk and Spock. They've got about twenty-six years logged, though I'm not sure how many of those were spent together. Then again, I'm not sure how long Shug and Celie were together, either. The musical is kind of vague about the timeline.
HOW MANY TIMES IF EVER HAS 6 BROKEN UP? ~ Shug and Celie have broken up at least twice, I think? It's complicated, but that time Shug went away and came back married probably counts. When Celie left Shug over that boy from the band, that definitely counts. Shug looked like she was going to try and convince Celie to take her back at the end, so there may be more breakups in their future (but hopefully not!).
IF THE WORLD WAS SUDDENLY THRUST INTO A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE WHICH SHIP WOULD MAKE IT OUT ALIVE, 2 OR 8? ~ A pair of figure skaters and a pair of astronauts are facing the zombie apocalypse. Yuuri and Victor are gone, there’s no way.
Shiro and Matt tho, they might be able to make it. They'd get separated, because what are Matt and Shiro without angst, but unbeknownst to the other they both survive. They're really great characters for a zombie AU, now that I'm thinking about it. Matt has at least some background in microbiology, and his dad is at the top of the field. Shiro is exactly the kind of person who would accidentally end up leading a ragtag band of survivors. They could work two different sides of the zombie genre as parallel protagonists, turning up in each other’s plots as the tragic lover presumed dead. Matt in a chilling scifi thriller with stark facilities hiding dark secrets as he works to uncover how this even happened, while outside Shiro hunts for survivors trying to carve out a future in a survivalist horror setting. It's perfect! They finally meet again in the third act, and only by pooling their knowledge and resources can the plot be resolved. (I’m guessing the zombies are the result of some Zarkon immortal Lich King nonsense? Allura has got to be key to whatever resolution happens, ofc. The plot needs some work.)
DID 9 EVER HAVE TO HIDE THEIR RELATIONSHIP FOR ANY REASON?
~ Tanatsu! I’m gonna give it a yes! I’m counting that time Tanuma pretended to be a spirit that had Natsume trapped in a jug. On a more serious note, if they do ever get together I can picture them not telling anyone, because they’re very private people. I mean, when Natsume wants to put his friends’ photos up to look at, he does it on the inside of his closet. Let Natsume stay in the closet, where he can feel safe.
IS 4 STILL TOGETHER? ~ Kirk/Spock. Nah mate, they're both super dead. They didn't even die in the same universe. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
IS 10 CANON? ~ YES IT IS!!!!
Tokaku and Haru are 100% canon, release the confetti!! (photographic evidence included) (THIS IS FAIRLY RECENT I’M STILL KINDA HYPE)
Tumblr media
IF ALL 10 SHIPS WERE PUT INTO A COUPLE’S HUNGER GAMES WHICH COUPLE WOULD WIN? ~ DUDE that's almost literally the plot of Tokaku and Haru's series. I think they’ve got this in the bag. Then again, there's a titan and two einherji in the game.
If someone can figure out how to kill a titan before they’re eaten, it'd be very close between Toharu and Fierrochase, assuming Magnus keeps Jack and the einherji don’t respawn. If no one figures out how to kill Ymir, Yumikuri wipes the field.
(This is actually a very interesting scenario tho, because there are only a few couples on this list that would be willing to kill the others. I’ve never read the hunger games, do they have explosive collars that stop them from forming alliances or smth? Emma and Regina have a son about the same age as a few of their opponents, they’d try to protect them. I guess if Dottie got invested in the competition, she could sew enough distrust to keep a total truce from forming. One or two betrayals is all it takes. Especially if she takes Yuuri out early to stop the English speakers from communicating with the Japanese speakers)
HAS ANYBODY EVER TRIED TO SABOTAGE 5’S SHIP? ~ Yumikuri. Only everyone. Between various kidnappings, they haven't been together for over thirty chapters. And the subtext of the series is so creepy I've stopped following it which I’m calling meta-sabotage.
WHICH SHIP WOULD YOU DEFEND UNTIL DEATH AND BEYOND? ~ Oh. Uhm. Definitely Celie/Shug. It's CANON goddamnit. And I know that there's a lot of other important things going on, I'm not gonna pretend that the ship is more important than any of the other heavy topics in there. The focus is elsewhere, and it deserves to be. But I am furious that no one will own up to Miss Celie being a lesbian. If I read one more academic meta on 'close female friendship' or see the words 'like sisters' one more time.
DO YOU SPEND HOURS A DAY GOING THROUGH 3’S TUMBLR PAGES? ~ Carterwood. Nah. There's not a whole lot of material, and I haven't got that kind of time. I did occasionally, back when the show was airing.
IF AN EVIL WITCH DESCENDED FROM THE SKY AND TOLD YOU THAT YOU HAD TO PICK 1 OF THE 10 SHIPS TO BREAK UP FOREVER OR ELSE SHE’D BREAK THEM ALL UP FOREVER WHICH SHIP WOULD YOU SINK? ~ Carterwood, without hesitation. They don't have a future. Dottie's not sure if she wants to be Peggy, fusleep with Peggy, or kill Peggy. It's an amazing dynamic, but.
Alright, for tagging! @silanosepiae, @mamiinaandthediamonds if you have time before the semester, and @visirion too since I put that spoiler notice in. No pressure for any of you just if you think it’s fun.
78. Is there a friend you would willingly have sex with?
Once Bitten || -
Insouciant. Of all the words that she could describe Anakin with right in that moment, that one would make the top of the list, once she crossed off some of the choicer words that leave the echo of soap in the back of her throat. Technically the greenhouse isn’t public, so she wouldn’t actually be saying filthy things where anyone was in danger of overhearing her speak so vulgarly, but she wasn’t also technically in the house and thus would be violating the spirit of the rule she’d learned long ago. So she sticks with insouciant.
It’s in the way he’s leaning into her. Hands on either side of the work counter, long fingers splayed across the wood, flesh impersonating rays of a shapely sun. It’s in the way he smells like cigarette smoke and Jack Daniels, he smells like rain on the horizon and dew clinging to the underside of leaves. Something else that she can’t put her finger on exactly but its clean, warm, and close, reminds her of salt spray on sea stones; goes right to her head and other places and in the morning she’ll wish that it came in a tiny glass bottle so she could spritz it on her pillows, her sheets. Maybe it's the whiskey barrel sweetness. Maybe it's the way that her hips and the small of her back, and that whole bit of her in between seems to fit just perfectly in the hollow of his own. Not that he’s bouncing against her, fidgeting where he stands, not obtrusively so. She can feel the sides of his converse ~vulcanised rubber, heavy canvas~ against the sides of her bare feet. Denim on chiffon. There’s a fervid kind of energy that envelopes him as it often does but there’s a different hue to it. And that is definitely a result of his voice right against her ear, fanning her cheek with his breath. The way its depth and timbre is something she could soak into, allow to drown out everything else from the sudden racing of her pulse to the way her breath hitches in her throat.
She closes her eyes for a brief moment, allowing her hands to clench the wood in a slightly different way, trying to draw a reserve of strength, of will from the potting soil and the snips of leaves and roots. As if all the resolve in the universe lies there beneath her nails. Answering him honestly is probably the worst thing she can do. Worse than coming up with some kind of specious lie that he would accept if he doesn’t examine it too closely, but one of the things that she likes about him is the way he unravels things, pulling them apart to examine their structure and integrity, before he carefully pieces it back together, often improved in its own way. She’d like to blame the fact that he has a talent for Matter. But even when his anxiety lays siege to his better nature and scrambles up his thoughts so that it takes him long minutes to get around to letting them come out of his mouth, he has a gift of telling personal truths like a well-remembered fairy tale.
She doesn’t mean that in a bad way, but he manages to put some distance between himself and his struggles that is truly remarkable. She doesn’t understand exactly how he does it, or even why, but she can sit there and listen to him for hours, and has done so in some cases. She envies him that particular gift, something she’s never had. Everything that lies inside her head is visceral and in the moment, very few exit lanes that aren’t choked with weeds and debris from growing up under the regime of her father. Moulded and shaped by her brother. And completely shattered by Billy. The black sheep, the long lost prince of a desiccated throne.
Maybe they are broken in different ways. She has more confidence in Anakin than he has in himself, their shyness book ends one another. In turn he has an eye for beauty or whatever it is that attracts him to other people and try as hard as she might, she can see no rhyme or pattern in it. Not that he’s brought strangers to her house that didn’t have little masked faces or fluffy grey wire-fur. She wants to know what drives him, how he finds himself in those places, and what he gets out of them. For once, she’d give her eye-teeth to experience that kind of passion. To feel immolated by the sensuality of it. Biting kisses along slender throat columns. Breathless hands everywhere and nowhere at once. But she knows better. She knows that all the things that are caught up in her head are not safe for public consumption. That they cling to a morality that is alien to everyone else she happens to know, that she can’t shake free of because she isn’t built that way.
He did throw in the qualifying designation of ‘friend’. That’s maybe worse than anything else he could say. The very idea of putting herself out there with someone she loves and trusts enough to be that close to is terrifying. What if they say no. Because they don’t love her life she wants? Worse, what if they do and something goes so catastrophically wrong that it ruins what might have been a perfectly fine, and above all else, platonic relationship?  The idea is so lined with her that she instinctively flinches away from the full exploration of that, she has enough things to lay awake at night in horror over. How does he do it? Make something so intimate and life changing casual? Oh she knows he’s charming, she knows that smile and a wink can get him almost anything he likes, whether it goes in his arm or his nose, or down on him while his fingers are in its hair. Magnetism like that is legendary in her Tradition and a few others. He’s like Kerouac and Morrison in that way, isn’t he? And what does he do when it dissolves at the first touch of the next morning’s dawn?
Doesn’t he ever feel so lonely that even taking a breath feels like it’s going to crush his chest? Does he ever ache because a friend only lasted as long as it took for the high of their existence to wear off? She knows the answer already from the most abstract sifting through of their conversations.
So really the only thing she can do is be honest. Hope he sees how futile a line of pursuit this is. Because she could imagine letting him into her bed, and not just to curl up with him. She could imagine sharing more than she already has. And invariably, when Anakin slips out one night and doesn’t come back, it’s going to kill her.
By virtue of the ridiculous length of his arms, even if she’s pressed against parts of him, she still manages to turn without elbowing him in the sternum. Her hands leave the wood for only a brief moment before she returns to clutch them in desperate need of moral support. She forces a slight smile as she leans back a little, not realising that she would be so close. That she could see every freckle, that little mole that lives on the corner of his full lower lip. Had she noticed before how deep-set his eyes were, even with the shadows pooled beneath them? Pupils dilated drawing even more attention to that particular shade of blue. Makes it all so hard to find neutral ground to focus on. So she picks that tiny scar that bisects his brow, and reminds her to ask him how he got it, though she’s about a thousand percent sure it’s one of his dozens and dozens of tragic, heart-wrenching stories.
“Lizahd King finally returns. T’ought mebbe ya got lost.” she says, pleased that her voice sounds mostly normal. Her smile becomes something a touch more genuine.
She presses her lips together and slicks them at the same time, making a tiny sound as her tongue retreats back behind her teeth. “Probably no gonna come as one big surprise t’ ya when I say...yes. An’ no. Look, don’ get me wrong. I love dat we have dis...hundred-clowns-in-a-Volkswagen kine of closeness. An’ I t’ink ya so amazing. So special. But firs’ of all… consider how much older I am. Five years may not seem like a huge deal, but it is. And den dere’s da fact dat in so many ways, I’m becoming ya mentor, is my job t’ teach ya da kine ya gonna need in da long run. An’ I would hate t’ have ya feel like I was some how takin’ advantage of ya.”
She swallows and moves her gaze down, to meet his own. “I’d be lyin’ if I said I nevah t’ought about it since dat one night. Dat I nevah had one dream about you...dat way, an’ felt ashame d’ nex’ morning. I jus’ dunno if...I’m wha’ ya need, wha’ ya want. If ya in a position t’ be wha’ I want an’ need.” It’s so hard to find the words when everything she wants to say seems to go right out of her mind even as she’s trying to get them out. “I knew da minute I saw you dat you were somet’ing special. An’ a part of me has tried t’ protect ya evah since. I worry when ya come home late. When ya don’ come a’ all. I worry dat ya gonna run into someone dat don’ got ya bes’ interest a’ heart, an’ is gonna use you. Make you feel worse about yaself dan ya sometimes do, dat dey gonna hurt you, break your heart, all kinds of bad stuff.”
One hand timorously leaves its perch to come and rest on his cheek. “Guess wha’ I am tryin’ t’ say is… I would. If you asked. If it jus’ happened. But not on purpose, not because I had any ulterior motive oddah dan da fact dat I...care about you so much. And maybe dat’s why I try ignore it. Try ignore you. Sometimes, is real hard t’ do dat. Especially when I can all but taste ya throat between my teeth. Feel ya hands on my skin. Which is why, mebbe, you should ge’ some sleep, yeah?”
katharos: a character playlist for delilah vanderbilt (x)
when will my life begin // mandy moore
and I'll reread the books if i have time to spare, i'll paint the walls some more, i'm sure there's room somewhere. and then i'll brush and brush, and brush and brush my hair, stuck in the same place i've always been. and i'll keep wonderin' and wonderin', and wonderin', and wonderin' when will my life begin?
belle (reprise) // emma watson
i want adventure in the great wide somewhere, i want it more than I can tell. and for once it might be grand to have someone understand, i want so much more than they've got planned...
somewhere over the rainbow // judy garland
somewhere over the rainbow, way up high, there's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby. somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue and the dreams that you dare to dream, really do come true.
a dream is a wish your heart make // lily james
a dream is a wish your heart makes when you're fast asleep, in dreams you will loose your heartache, whatever you wish for you keep. you wake with the morning sunlight to find fortune that is smiling on you. don't let your heart be filled with sorrow, for all you know tomorrow the dream that you wish will come true. no matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing, the dream that you wish will come true
home // gabrielle aplin
i'm a phoenix in the water, a fish that's learned to fly. and I've always been a daughter, but feathers are meant for the sky. and so I'm wishing, wishing further, for the excitement to arrive. it's just i'd rather be causing the chaos than laying at the sharp end of this knife
lost boy // ruth b.
i am a lost boy from neverland, usually hanging out with peter pan and when we're bored we play in the woods, always on the run from captain hook. "run, run, lost boy," they say to me, away from all of reality." neverland is home to lost boys like me and lost boys like me are free
technicolour beat // oh wonder
and I feel life for the very first time, love in my arms and the sun in my eyes. i feel safe in the 5am light, you carry my fears as the heavens set fire
you are my sunshine // the civil wars
you are my sunshine, my only sunshine. you make me happy when skies are gray. you'll never know dear, how much I love you. please don't take my sunshine away. the other night dear, as i lay sleeping, i dreamt i held you in my arms. when i awoke, dear, i was mistaken so i hung my head and i cried.
paradise // coldplay
when she was just a girl, she expected the world, but it flew away from her reach and the bullets catch in her teeth. life goes on, it gets so heavy, the wheel breaks the butterfly. every tear a waterfall, in the night the stormy night she'll close her eyes, in the night the stormy night away she'd fly and dreams of para-para-paradise
somewhere in neverland // all time low
wendy we can get away, i promise if you’re with me, say the word and we’ll find a way. i can be your lost boy, your last chance, your "everything better" plan. oh, somewhere in neverland
cry baby // melanie martinez
you seem to replace your brain with your heart. you take things so hard and then you fall apart. you try to explain but before you can start, those cry baby tears come out of the dark. someone's turning the handle to that faucet in your eyes, you pour it out where everyone can see. your heart's too big for your body, it's why you won't fit inside.
brick by boring brick // paramore
she lives in a fairy tale somewhere too far for us to find, forgotten the taste and smell of a world that she's left behind. it's all about the exposure the lens i told her, the angles are all wrong now, she's ripping wings off of butterflies.... well you built up a world of magic because your real life is tragic...
delilah // florence + the machine
i'm drifting through the halls with the sunrise, climbing up the walls for that flashing light. cause i'm gonna be free and i'm gonna be fine, cause i'm gonna be free and i'm gonna be fine (maybe not tonight)
