Joe’s Weather Blog: My goodness all the rain (MON-10/8)
Good Monday to you…our drought eradicating rains continue to move through the region with flooding rains an ongoing issue this morning. Areas off to the SE of KC…I know you haven’t had as much…but it’s eventually going to come down like crazy there…especially later tomorrow into early Wednesday. For the KC area…amounts of 5-11″ have fallen over the past week and more is coming. Since everything started late on the 3rd…we’ve had over 7″ rain at KCI Airport. Others have had more. Meanwhile Sedalia has had less than 1.5″ in that same time period.
The heaviest rain has been co-located where the worst of the drought was. If I was working this morning I would create a graphic chowing this. So ponds and lakes that were low…are now getting filled…and in a big kind of way. Flooding has mostly been in the usual spots so far this morning and a Flash Flood Warning continues into the late morning hours.
Forecast:
Today: Rain will taper off as the day moves along. Some isolated new storms may pop later this afternoon. Highs should warm up well into the 70s to near 80°. Muggy too.
Tonight: Additional showers/storms possible although perhaps not with the coverage of last night’s activity. With that said some locally heavy rains are possible again. Lows in the 60s
Tuesday: Off and on rains are possible in the day with increased heavy rains likely Tuesday evening and overnight as a cold front finally works through the area. This will sweep away the moisture and the rain before rush hour Wednesday. Highs again well into the 70s. Worth mentioning that there may be some severe weather Tuesday evening IF we’re unstable enough.
Wednesday: Some breaks in the clouds and chillier with highs in the 50s
Discussion:
I think the doppler indicated rain totals say it all this morning…
And those totals seem low compared to reality. The map above has data from about 7PM on the 3rd through today.
Rain gauges though in JOCO, KS show much higher totals via StormWatch.
The lowest total that I could quickly find over the last week(!) is about 6″ while the highest is over 11.3″ in the SE part of the county.
That is a lot of rain! This is something that hasn’t happened in quite some time. Perhaps going back to the flooding episodes of 2017.
Note though on the radar rain total that I started with…the area that has “missed” on the beefiest totals…that would be towards the Clinton and Sedalia region.
And we’re not done…
A deep western trough will lift out towards the western Plains over the next 36 hours…until that passes into the upper Midwest later Tuesday and Wednesday…we have rain chances. The atmosphere remains loaded with moisture and for the KC region will remain loaded for bear through early Wednesday. Once that moves out..we’ll start drying out for a few days.
A great way of visualizing this would be looking back 24 hours and you can see the sharp and deep “U” shape in the western US…then comparing it to what the data shows this morning…note the LACK of movement or change.
https://cdn.knightlab.com/libs/juxtapose/latest/embed/index.html?uid=ded08172-caf7-11e8-9dba-0edaf8f81e27
Use the slider bar…move it RIGHT to see yesterday and LEFT to see today.
With the KC region in a persistent and VERY moist SSW flow aloft…disturbances that come up the I-35 corridor will create more rain and because there is so much moisture in the atmosphere that can be tapped…
Note the 1.5″>almost 2″ of precipitatable water (PW) which indicates deep moisture amounts through the lower and mid part of the atmosphere especially…you get heavy and persistent rains due to the training effect of the storms/heavy rainfall.
Eventually that big western trough is going to split…with one big piece heading into the northern Plains…another chunk of it will linger in the SW…that may be important towards the weekend (more on that in a moment).
So as one piece heads into the upper Midwest it will push a cold front through the region later tomorrow evening.
The map above shows the atmospheric moisture and the surface features (isobars and highs and lows). Note the surface storm in SW IA and a trailing cold front down the state line area. This will mean the end of the rains…but before that happens the threat of additional storms will redevelop.
That will be dependent on the instability that we build up tomorrow. I do get concerned though that with temperatures potentially near 80°…an atmosphere swollen with moisture…a surface low near by…and quite a bit of wind shear available…that we could get strong to severe storms…and yes even the potential for some rotating storms…that brings the issue of a few funnels/tornadoes into play. It’s not really a set-up for long track type things..but something about this set-up and the fact that the clouds will have low bases to begin with later tomorrow bothers me. Perhaps a better set-up for NE KS and/or NW MO…but something that I’m paying attention too at least.
So on Wednesday a much drier and cooler air mass comes in…and there actually may be some frost in parts of the area Thursday AM.
Beyond that…there is a matter of the 2nd part of the splitting trough that I mentioned earlier…remember the part that would be dropping into the SW part of the country? Well there is something else happening in the Pacific Ocean that warrants at least a mention…and that is Hurricane Sergio.
Here is a look at Sergio…it will be in a weakening stage now…
I bring this up because IF the western US trough is splitting and IF that split drops towards the SW part of the country just right…it may capture some of the remnants and the moisture from Sergio and send it towards the SW part of the country. This looks to be VERY possible>likely at this point.
So what happens from there? Well it’s POSSIBLE that the moisture from Sergio flows into the Plains later Friday and then moves towards the NE towards the KC region towards next weekend. Again just putting this on the table for now
Of other concern is the soon to be hurricane Michael in the Gulf of Mexico that’s strengthening and heading towards the Fl Panhandle region
That should be a big ticket item for the NW part of FL…and there is also concern for additional rains in the Carolinas too which are still flooded out from Florence a few weeks ago.
Our feature photo is from Matthew Reinschmidt who’s rain gauge is about 5 miles west of Kearney, MO. This is the 2nd full gauge he’s emptied out…that’s 12″ of rain there!

Fruit Juicing - Best Home Juicer to Make Fresh Fruit Juice

Fruit Juicing - Best Home Juicer to Make Fresh Fruit Juice
Alright this is John Kohler with discountjuicerscom
Today we have another exciting episode for you and what we're going to do today for you guys is share with you guys my opinions on the best juicer for juicing fruits Now there's some optimum words there, that means the important word, and the important word is best What is best mean to you? So to me best means highest yield and highest nutritional quality So I'm going to preface that, this video with that That being said if you just want like the highest yield and potentially not the highest nutrient quality then the best juicer for juicing fruits hands down is a press style machine
That's kind of like how they press out wine grapes or press out apples to make apple juice or the cider, right It's one of those presses, you could get something like a Pure Juicer, which is a two-stage hydraulic press, you could get something like a Wells Press, something like that or you could get a simple fruit press to press out the juices in the fruits That being said I'm not going to talk about that kind because that kind may leave fiber and leave that in with the pulp in which case you're getting more of sugar water, which I'm going to let you guys know straight up that I would encourage you guys to always eat your fruits fresh or blend them before you juice them Because when you juice them you lose part of the fiber You're going to get the soluble fibers that is soluble in the water that comes out with the juice but you're going to lose all of the insoluble fiber
For some people I know that may be important Be sure to check the link down below for a video I did that's on juicing keeps more than just the fiber In any case, we have a few juicers here today that I'm going to introduce you guys to and I'll explain you guys why I'm picking the one I am for juicing fruits, getting the highest yield and the most nutrition in the juice So first we have the standard juicer right here, this is the Breville Juice Fountain Elite and this is the juicer that many of you guys may have Now this juicer will absolutely juice fruits, right
It's always best when juicing fruits in any machine is to always get the nicest, hardest, firmest fruit whether you're getting a pineapple, whether you're getting a papaya, a mango and things like bananas, they won't even juice so don't even try or apples or oranges Don't get really soft ones or soft mealy apples, they're not going to juice as well as a nice hard, firm apple You see the thing is most of the juicer styles, aside from the press style machine needs like hard fiber to actually push through and get the pulp through the machine to eject that so it can extract the juice When it's soft fibrous materials, like a really soft over-ripe mango or soft strawberries, really soft papaya, it just really mushes up and no juice is extracted right But yeah, the Breville Juice Fountain will absolutely juice fruits, not a problem with it if you've ever juiced fruits in a Breville
Basically you get some juice, it's highly aerated, which in my opinion is maybe not the best thing for the phytonutrients based on some of the studies I've seen Then you get the pulp The pulp can be actually rather wet and leave big chunks of fruit that actually just gone un-juiced So you're pretty much wasting a lot of the fruit Especially if they're expensive fruits, it's not going in your glass you're going to drink, it's going down in the pulp catch bin
Beside the high speed machines there are many low speed juicers on the market I have two of them here today This one is called the Solo Star 4, this is called a horizontal single auger machine This style machine is best for juicing things like leafy greens and wheat grass and sprouts It really excels at that
But on the fruits, especially if you're trying to juice pineapple it's going to kind of back up on you and you're going to be pulling your hair out Now this is, I'm talking about juicing straight fruits, like with no vegetables Now if you want to juice vegetables with some fruits, like make a pineapple-carrot-kale juice it's going to do great because what you're going to do is you're going to rotate the different textures, you're going to put a few leaves in, put in a little bit of pineapple then put that carrot in to follow it and that hard fiber of the carrot will help push out that soft fruit texture of the pineapple or whatever else, other fruit you're juicing whether that's apples or oranges or kiwis So yeah, don't necessarily recommend this style machine for juicing like all fruits or mostly fruits Another kind of machine that's actually not here today is actually known as the Twin Gear or dual auger style machine
This style machine also I do not recommend for the fruits do to the way it works It really needs some, once again hard fiber to eject out the pulp I've tried to juice pineapple in a green star juicer, I don't maybe five years ago and I still remember to this day like how much it was wasting my time, how frustrated I got right So what I did instead was I juiced pineapples with some coconut meats and then the coconut meat provided the fiber to push through the soft texture of the pineapple and it worked great But just doing straight pineapple you're going to definitely be pulling your hair out
Thank god I still got my head of hair But I don't recommend the Twin Gears for juicing all fruits Now, if you want to juice all fruits the best machine that I would recommend is this guy over here This is known as a vertical single auger juicer and this one is the Omega VSJ 843 This is a second generation vertical single auger machine and this is a very important distinction
While the first generation machines worked well on fruits, they did tend to back up and clog up I mean, I have videos going back several years on the predecessor to this the Omega VRT 350 and juicing fruits and it was actually my pick at the time But now, guess what Just like there's a new iPhone 7 on the horizon now or maybe it's already out when you're seeing this, there's new juicers coming out all the time So this is the latest and greatest machine and they have improved this model over the last one to be more efficient, put less pulp in the juice and even work better on fruits
So I'm actually quite thankful for that Now the second generation machines what you want to know if it's, to that if it's a second generation or not is you want to look at the juicing screen You're going to go ahead and take this apart for you guys to show you guys real quick This is a big difference between this machine and virtually all the other machines on the market Here's the juicing screen and on this juicing screen you guys are just going to see basically a cylinder
It's a little bit bigger on the top, little bit smaller on the bottom It's kind of like a funnel But as you guys can see there's no holes in the bottom of the screen There's just one bit hole, right Now first generation single auger machines and most other manufactures will have a little hole in the bottom of the screen that basically restricts the pulp from coming out, so this is really actually a good thing actually when juicing vegetables and maybe leafy greens in some cases although it can get clogged
But in this case because it doesn't have that hole, it doesn't have the restriction with fruits so the pulp generally flows out better So the Omega VSJ 843 is a second generation as is the Slow Star juicer by Tribest Those are the only two that I'm aware of at this time Hopefully more come out soon That's why this style machine is definitely better
Now between the Slow Star and the Omega VSJ, I mean they both will juice fruits, but I've tested them both and VSJ tends to get a little bit higher yields in most cases with the fruits and also has a little bit less backing up On certain fruits you know the Slow Star will do better actually because actually the Slow Star actually maybe grinds a bit more effectively than the VSJ 843 So without further ado what I'd like to do today is not juice pineapples or juice things like papayas Whoops Which I've actually done before in the VSJ 843 which works amazingly
I do have a specific video on how to juice pineapples, to cut it a specific way because you can't juice the core without precutting it or that may jam up Also on the papayas, as I've said before the most important thing when you want to juice any kind of fruit is you want to select a nice hard, firm one Don't get one of those super soft ones, enjoy that one because it's so ripe, fresh or blend it up into a smoothie What we're going to do next, actually we're going to come back at you and we're going to juice some strawberries in the Omega VSJ 843 That's actually a pretty tough job for most any juicer
So now we're going to go ahead and juice two pounds of strawberries Now I cut off the tops but you can easily juice the tops, actually the tops of the strawberries are edible and you could throw them through the juicer I removed them today because they were looking a little bit funky Now today I'm juicing organic strawberries and I do encourage you guys to purchase organic strawberries whenever you can Strawberries are one of the most sprayed fruits according to the dirty dozen list
So I try to buy organic strawberries pretty much only I don't really eat conventional strawberries That being said, if you can't afford organic strawberries or unable to find the organic strawberries, I still believe that even conventional strawberries are better than most other things in the grocery store I'd rather eat conventional strawberries than any kind of like cheese or milk or animal products or any kind of processed food products right, ho-hos Ding-dongs, Twinkies, cookies, chips
Yeah organic strawberries are way better right We all want to always try to think in terms of good, better, best with our diet and do the best you guys possibly can In any case let's go ahead and turn this machine on and just start dropping in the strawberries You have small enough strawberries they're just going to drop in there and then the machine will shoot, accept them in and start juicing them on up As you guys can see I'm starting to get some juice to come out the front of the machine
It's a pretty fine juice Now don't expect when juicing fruits to get really like, like watery consistency like those store bought juices that you're used to That's, in most cases that's not going to happen, right In the juicer you're going to get a little bit more fiber with that That's a good thing because with the fiber there maybe additional phytochemicals and phytonutrients coming along with that fiber
A lot of strawberry juices at the store are not even 100% juice any more If you do find 100% strawberry juice it's probably almost like translucent, kind of like that apple juice that you may be buying But when you juice it at home with your own Omega VSJ juicer you're going to find the juice is a lot deeper, rich pigmented colors and these are good things for us In any case, I'm going to go ahead and speed this up for you guys so you don't have to sit here and talk to you for the next five minutes while I'm juicing the rest of these strawberries Alright, so that's all the strawberries and once you're done juicing in the Omega VSJ juicer or any vertical single auger juicer for that matter, you want to put the last produce item in then let it run another thirty-sixty seconds because it's still juicing
You can tell the pulp is still coming out, then you should probably let it run more When the pulp stops flow and the juice stops coming out then you're probably good to shut it off Alright, so I think we're done juicing now, here's a tip here What I like to do is take some of this pulp and then feed it right back through a little bit Now if you feed all the pulp back through it may or may not work so well
Sometimes when the pulp's already mushed up it doesn't actually re-eject but this way you'll get some more extra juice out But when you do that be forewarned that the second pressing of juice is going to be a lot more thicker with a lot more pulp in it Alright, it looks like got some of the juice coming out and we're going to go ahead and turn this off Now I premeasured my strawberries It was actually two pounds even, or 32 ounces
Now looking on this here, it looks like we got just about two cups of juice out of that, so that's actually sixteen ounces and that's actually quite impressive because think about it one pound of carrots generally will make about one cup of juice or eight ounces So that's two pounds of carrots equals sixteen ounces But two pounds of strawberries in the Omega VSJ juicer which is one of the most efficient juicers on the strawberries to not only get a high yield but also a high nutritional content which you can tell by the deeper rich red color gets two cups So that's actually quite impressive Let's go ahead and pour this out and show you guys the consistency
Now this is not a total like thin juice It's a little bit thicker, you know like that, you ever had like peach nectar from like Kerns when you were a kid growing up or guava nectar, it's a little bit thicker Look at this, this looks like it could be tomato juice, but this is 100% strawberry juice I think this is the first time I've actually juiced strawberries because I had an overabundance of organic strawberries this year So let's go ahead and try this
Oh my god, it's so incredible It tastes like, it tastes like one of those strawberry fruit chews I had when I was a kid, of course you've got to get ripe strawberries, but not super sweet because they add extra sugar in there But really the flavor comes out when you remove the fiber and this is one of the techniques I like to do, if I have some unripe fruit for example, if I have some unripe cantaloupes, right, that I'm eating them, that they're hard and they're crunchy and they're not really ripe and I'm not really enjoying eating them because they just don't taste good because they're picked too early or something like that I'll throw them through the juicer so I get the nutrition out of it and leave the pulp behind and also when you juice your fruits, you do concentrate the flavors So yeah, it was an excellent job juicing the strawberries in the Omega VSJ 843
Final thing I'd like to say is if you want a special treat what you could do is you could take some sparkling water and add that to this so then you'll have some fizzy strawberry juice and this is way better for you and your kids then a coke or most other Gatorades or other kind, any kind of other beverages that you may be buying at the store I always want to encourage you guys to eat the healthiest foods you can and of course vegetable juices in my opinion are far healthier than fruit juices But if you drink a fruit juice instead of a coke or a soda, then that's a good thing in my opinion because think good, better, best not right, wrong, good/bad Fruit juices, they're bad man they're going to raise your blood sugar Well in this fruit juice right here this has the soluble fiber in it plus it has all the phytochemicals and phytonutrients in you
Actually I think in the strawberry there's like over six hundred different phytonutrients and phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals inside 100% strawberry juice and some of these polyphenols and fiber may help slow the absorption of the sugar into your blood stream That being said, if I did have diabetes I wouldn't be doing fruit juices, I'd be eating the fruits whole or blending them But for those of you guys who are healthy and like tasty treats, definitely get the Omega VSJ to juice your own fruits Hope you guys enjoyed this episode, if you did please support me and my work by making your purchase at discountjuicerscom
