Merlin hears boisterous singing outside; midsummer festivities crackle as sun clings to sky, long into the evening. But here, they celebrate secrets in Lancelot’s bed. They’re bare, Lancelot supine, mussed. Merlin claims his lap, laces their shaking hands.

Lips against Merlin’s throat. “Tomorrow, love?”

His magic—tomorrow, he’ll tell. He’s decided, and guaranteed Arthur’s attention. What’s this about, Merlin? Lancelot always swears, I’ll be there. He’s brimming, joy-struck, terrified.

“Yeah,” Merlin gasps, unspooled by a blue-blazing lance. Here is love enough to weather whatever Arthur might say. Merlin moans, rides, and braces against the shifting sun. “Keep me ‘til then.”
