Hey, what if Surf’s Up is an allegory on the corporate world in the US and how if you give it e nought time it basically turns into a meat grinder?
HIYA! Thanks for the ask!
This is so funny because I've been meaning to rewatch Surf's Up for a while now! My memory of the film is fuzzy, since I last watched it in like 2011 or so (I also happened to wander into the theater without a ticket back in 2007). I was specifically gonna be looking for stuff related to manufactured authenticity, and what it means to be true to your art when your passion + image are also your primary source of income, etc., since I vaguely remember those topics being...kinda' in the film's orbit? And of course the whole documentary style sets the stage for some fun conversations about framing. So yeah, Surf's Up was on my rewatch roster and then I got this ask! The stars are aligned... ✨
I'd never considered a potential corporate/capitalist perspective before this ask! Though I guess that sort of ties into the whole "I want to follow my dream/be the best at what I do, but do I have to sell my authentic self to achieve that goal??" problem, since so many of us have been forced to commodify our hobbies/passions/identities in order to survive this corporate hellscape. Again, I haven't seen Surf's Up in like a decade, so maybe the capitalist grind is a huge part of the film and I don't even remember! If you end up making an essay about it, that sounds like it'll be awesome! :D
#surf's up#I may not have seen this film in 10+ years#but by GOD do I get 'wiiiiith the grain.......move WIIIITH the grain' stuck in my head on the regular#it crops up in unexpected ways lmao#I S2G THEY REFERENCED THAT LINE IN PUSS AND BOOTS THE LAST WISH AND I FELT SO VALIDATED
