SPIDERMAN HOMECOMING REVIEW - MILD SPOILERS
Spiderman: Homecoming is without a doubt one of the best MCU movies to date.
I have to admit my expectations were a bit low going into the movie because I was disappointed by some of the recent Marvel movies, but i truly underestimated them & didn’t think I’d like it as much as I did. The movie is truly fantastic.
Even though we’ve already seen Tom Holland as Spiderman in Civil War, I really enjoyed seeing him again in the role, he’s incredible & I love this version of Peter though I do wish we got to see more of his nerdy side. Can’t wait to see more of Tom Holland & more of Spidey in the MCU. I also loved that we get to see Peter realize how bad he is at being a superhero, which is quite unique; I appreciated that Peter also had to learn many lessons along the way and that the movie show that he’s still a kid and he’s growing up (ex: when he tried to unlock the full capabilities of the suit)
As for the plot, I LOVED it & loved seeing a sort of heist scenario in a superhero movie. I love that we got to see Peter go through the journey of truly discovering who he is & how to use his powers responsibly without having to see his origins, all through the amazing action sequences & classic Spiderman scenes, to seeing him struggle to balance superhero life with high school. Even though this is the 6th Spiderman movie in recent years, not having to go through Peter’s origins was very refreshing and allowed for the movie to center more on him establishing himself. I really appreciated that the plot of the movie was kind of simple in that it didn’t focus too much on contributing to the overarching plot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but rather kept the story contained, revolving around the characters and elements relevant to THIS story on it’s own.
In my opinion, the inclusion of Iron Man was just the right amount & done perfectly; he was like a father-figure to Peter, & Peter was a son-figure to him, but it was;t done in a cheesy way, it was just perfect for both characters, worked really well; it was so heartwarming & fun at the same time. For the first time in a LONG time, Marvel got the comedy right with this move. I was genuinely surprised about this because most of the jokes were actually funny & felt natural & not forced like the recent Marvel movies.
Honestly there were so many twists & turns in this movie that I didn’t see coming, it felt like such a fun adventure that we went on with Spidey & I enjoyed every second of it.
As for the side characters, I didn’t really like Ned, I liked Zendaya’s character but wanted her to have a bigger role more screen time & be a closer friend to Peter than she was. I didn’t really like Liz because she felt like the typical girl in a superhero movie & didn’t really enjoy seeing her on screen. I also really appreciated the movie had a lot of diversity & that everyone looked their age!
I was actually surprised that I liked the villain in the movie, Vulture was the perfect choice & was portrayed perfectly. I hope Marvel continues on this path to fix their villain problem.
I was also quite impressed with the soundtrack in the movie as well, the songs were perfectly chosen & perfectly used.
I really liked that the movie felt very fun, young & modern, but not too modern that it would be cringe-worthy & not too young that it felt cheesy or like a typical teen movie. Usually I’d be more into darker & more serious superhero movies but I think it was done in such a great way. The movie definitely has a John Hughes//80s teen movie vibe was such a perfect element that could only work this well with Spiderman. I think this is definitely a movie teenagers in the future will look back to & say “gosh movies were great in that time”.
However, I do have to admit that the continuity errors did annoy me, and some plot points did feel forced. I thought it was unfortunate that there was nothing special about the cinematography in the movie. Even though it was a really good movie, I also think that Marvel didn’t take any risks with it and played it safe.
I have to say one of the things that made me really love this movie is that to me it just felt so felt real & genuine; it felt true to the comics, was done just right, & leaves you wanting more! I left the cinema feeling a buzz. Spiderman Homecoming has reignited my love for the MCU.
9/10
The following paragraph is the extremely spoilery/fangirling section of the review.
I have to admit I didn’t see the Vulture being Liz’s father twist, but now that i let it sink it in, it kinda feels “meh” and not that interesting of a twist.
I LOVED the Captain America videos. They were hilarious and perfect, and definitely one of my favorite things about the movie.
No one can understand the happiness I felt seeing Tony happy again with Pepper. FINALLY! YES! Tony deserves all the happiness in the world I’m so happy that he’s happy. Also, how awesome was the Iron Spider suit?! I kinda expected MJ tbh but I was still surprised.
