usually i like avenuex, especially her videos that are more about the background of the c-showbusiness, but i was kind of... maybe not put off but a bit disappointed by her Scathing review of miss the dragon, which. am i the only person in existence who didn’t have high expectations from the start? everyone else is like this drama is BAD it’s SOOOOOOO BAD guys did you... expect it to be truly good? did you watch it for the plot and intellectual stimulation, and not for pretty actors being cute and sometimes funny? should i feel bad that i’m not as much of an Intellectual? huh

but then she made this compilation video about the most ridiculous chinese drama scenes, and the scene from yearstars when jxy falls from the hospital roof, is caught by jbj in midair and lands on him, along w/ him, yknow, dying but Getting Better, and like... guys. i. i kind of don’t know what perspective am i supposed to take here. because on one hand, if you watch a c-drama and find it ‘hilarious’ and ‘ridiculous’ that the gravity seems to work a bit differently here and Things Happen Sometimes, then i don’t know what to tell you

like back with miss the dragon i think she had gripes with the bars of a cage being so wide that the snake could easily escape through them, and i was like huh? huh? wait, you paid attention to that? you didn’t file it off as something to intensify your suspension of disbelief on? this is your genuine complaint, that a sillay little series with Suspend Your Disbelief CGI has the bars too wide for them gotdamn snake? dear god i hope she gets good buck for this channel because sometimes it would be just... yknow, better just not to watch it... to put it in manga terms, if you don’t like ecchi, no matter how enjoyable an ecchi harem series is according to ecchi fans, you won’t enjoy it! that’s how it works!!!

this is not me saying being nitpicky Bad, or that you should have zero expectations whatsoever, it’s that there are dramas that like, strive to be realistic and Good, Exquisite, even!, where paying attention to, idk, a surgeon having perfect hybrids, would make sense. there are, though, series that are of a bit lower quality, or are good but overall quite messy (hello, cql), and if you focus on all the things that don’t make sense... what. what for. often it’s a low budget that makes hq cgi impossible to achieve, often it’s the rushed shooting, and whatcha gonna do about it. like does it matter. what are you watching cql for because i sure am not watching it for high quality cgi and fight scenes

on the other hand, maybe i Am wrong/stupid/a child, because people on mdl have said the explanation for the mutation ohhh sorry vampirism is “ridiculous”, “makes no sense” and “is for children”. what... would an explanation for adults, with sense, look like? isn’t this the thing about this drama, that it’s about a dude who somehow got himself unkillable and would like to fix that? like. i think it wouldn’t happen in real life (correct me if i’m wrong), therefore i’m accepting this as a part of the Setting. and hey maybe when i begin to like a series, i lose all the stuff that a Cool Person With A Brain should have, such as high expectations for realism (what? you guys didn’t overwrite the cgi xuanwu and the wen wolf in your imagination? you make jokes months after watching cql about how bad the cgi was because you were able to tell it’s cgi, thus rendering the show A Pain To Watch? huh) but. aside from describing what happens in the scene, she didn’t really say how was it ridiculous. what am i supposed to laugh at here!! seriously, can someone please tell me, i don’t like feeling like i’m the only one who didn’t get the joke when everyone around me is having the ball of their life

then even the complaint about jxy’s fall being quite fast, so that you see her body moving with quite the force, and then in the next shot you can see her hands holding onto the edge of the roof comfortably and her face showing no sign of strain! like, yeah, i guess they could have make her show some struggle or something, but then they were filming it in winter, maybe they wanted to wrap up quickly so that no one gets pneumonia and that was the best shot the could get, idk. is that it? like this is one of the most ridiculous scenes of the year? huh

you loved it when the seasons began to change and the days stretched out longer. sun trickled through the canopy of trees on the campus, highlighting the stone buildings with a warm, golden glow. you liked the summer, it made you feel more alive, and your favourite thing to do whilst at university was to find a calm, quiet spot and hide your nose in a book.

you wondered what your boyfriend was doing. after the first lecture you had shared that day, jeonghan had pressed a chaste kiss to your forehead before wandering off to his next one. you'd had a break then, so to the library you went. the day had passed slowly, the two of you exchanging texts every so often. his most recent one to you had been a slew of heart emojis, and you'd laughed at it to yourself before returning the amount tenfold.

your phone remained in your pocket now, silent. your lecture had kicked out early, and you were looking forward to some free time before meeting jeonghan to head to his. pushing open one of the heavy wooden doors that lead out of your building, you basked in the warmth that soaked through you, a sigh leaving your lips. shifting the backpack on your shoulder, you began to make the journey to what was known as 'your spot' by jeonghan.

it was a small grassy part of campus, with wildflowers that sprouted off in sections and carefully maintained dandelions decorating the base of two large willow trees. their branches swung low, brushing the ground with their leaves gently in the slight breeze, like a painter working diligently on a masterpiece. you settled on a small patch of grass that was away from others that had also chosen the spot to sit. stretching your legs out in front of you, you let out a yawn that was covered by your hand. the issue with the warmth is that it always made you so sleepy. trying to shake it off, you unzipped your backpack, eyes glancing over the other occupiers of the grass; couples brushed shoulders and some groups studied, books and notes laid in front of them.

you followed suit, tugging a worn paperback out of your bag and flicking it open to where your bookmark was. your 'bookmark' was a pressed tulip, one of the first flowers jeonghan had ever gotten you. you were a romantic soul and thrived off the gestures your boyfriend did sometimes. you lost yourself in the novel, even though it was something you'd read many times before, and only broke concentration when someone sat next to you with a loud grunt.

jeonghan's hair, newly dyed a mousy brown, was beautiful in this light and your breath caught in your throat as he didn't stop with just sitting next to you, no; he decided to lay down, resting his head in your lap where your book had been moments before. he looked up at you, the sun causing the brown in his eyes to become a dark honey colour, and a smile settled on his lips, curling the edges.

"hey."

you snorted, carefully replacing your bookmark and closing your book. a smile wound it’s way onto your face as you laid it on top of your backpack and leaned back on one of your hands, the other went towards his hair. "hey yourself, han."

his larger hand caught yours before it reached its mark and he brought it to his lips, brushing them against it gently.

"missed you." he murmured against your skin, and your heart swelled, heat rising to your cheeks. your hand escaped his and you carded it through his locks, abesntmindedly thinking about how good he looked with long hair. he made a small noise, eyes fluttering shut.

"i missed you too, baby." you replied, quietly, feeling nothing but content as the sun shined down on you.

Choices - Kim Donghan

Request; so my idiot ass lost the request but it was from an anon and for some really angsty kim donghan stuff so :’)

Summary; Kim Donghan is forced to pick his career over you, his girlfriend

You and Donghan had been dating since before he went on Produce 101, in fact, it may have been a lie that those kisses were from the boys at his fancy all boys school. Mayhaps they were from his girlfriend who attended the all girls school next door. 

You were basically a princess in the all boys school. You were kind and helped everyone with their problems, cooked homemade meals, and stood up to bullies for the poor freshman.

Somewhere along the way you ran into Donghan and his little dance club, and damn those visuals had your heart fluttering for a week straight. After a couple months of interacting and getting close with the boy, you two were finally dating.

When he became a trainee, you were all for it. If he ever needed anything you would bring it to him. You helped him catch up on lessons he missed, made sure he was eating well despite his company’s many protests, and even stayed up ungodly hours to watch him practice and make sure he took breaks. While he auditioned for Produce 101 Season 2 and managed to get in, you were overjoyed, taking him out to go eat friend chicken and being happy that he was closer to his dreams. 

Of course, Produce 101 meant that he wouldn’t be able to see him often, calls and texts would be limited, you wouldn’t be there to cheer him on during practice, bring him food, or make sure he was taking care of himself. All of that was very much concerning. You did what you could though, reminding him constantly that he had to take care of himself during the show and that if he ever had time to contact you that you’d answer asap if he called. It was still worrying. Everyday you helped him practice for his rank evaluation performance, making sure it was perfect.

The days coming up to his departure were spent cuddling, the two of you curled up on the couch while he rested and you worried, playing with his hair gently while staring blankly at the tv screen. If he were to become an idol, would you still be allowed to date him? What if he got too busy to have a girlfriend? You shooed the thoughts out of your head, smiling at the boy next to you before falling asleep.

While he was a trainee on pd101, you voted almost religiously, whenever you could you did, hoping he would survive the elimination rounds despite his little screentime. 

When Donghan was eliminated you rushed over to his dorms as soon as you could, barging through the doors, locating him, and crushing him in a hug. 

“You did well, you did well..”

For the next month, it was sad to watch him slowly come back to himself. He thought he was done for good, his dancing and singing weren’t the same, and all you could do was watch him slowly rot. he didn’t eat as well or as much as he did before and you found yourself fighting him just to get him to eat a bite of food. 

When it was announced he was going to be a member of JBJ, it was like a switch flipped inside him, he became energetic again, back to the old Donghan and it was then that you could see his passion for preforming. Suddenly his schedule was packed with performances, practices, recordings, and shows. While this took time from his time with you, you were happy to see him happy, and if him being happy meant that you’d have to sacrifice some of your time with him, then you’ll accept it. 

You remained hidden, but supportive, during many performances you were backstage rooting for him, behind the vlive cameras you were doing funny things to make him smile, and even when he was living in the dorms with the other guys, he still called you over to cook for them when they were tired. Not that you minded, they were always nice about it and the members of JBJ were good friends with you, you were a good friend who’d laugh at stupid jokes with them, you even practiced with them sometimes (after watching the choreography so many times you were bound to learn something). You were practically a secret member of the group, you were wherever they were and they were wherever you were. 

Worried that Donghan would fall into another down mood after JBJ disbanded, you arranged for him to go places and spend time with Kenta, hoping he would stay happy. However, it seemed he didn’t need that to stay happy because his company told him he’d become a solo artist only a week after the disband. 

Cuddle sessions and time together were very limited, but anytime you two had time alone together Donghan would smile, gently rubbing your side or playing with your hair while he excitedly told you about how well preparations were going, or how he finally managed to nail the dance break. It was quite cute, he was almost puppy like, yet you couldn’t help but find yourself feeling lonely. Still, you held on, determined to make it work.

It wasn’t even a week after his debut when he carefully creeped in through your apartment door, seeing you on the couch and sending you a weak smile before sitting on the opposite side of the couch to you. 

“What’s wrong?” your eyebrows furrowed, this wasn’t like him, he usually wore a bright smile and tackled you in a hug when he got home. 

“The company says that you’re too much of a distraction, and that I should um... focus on my debut. Y/N, I’m really sorry, I love you, you know that, but...” He bit his lip, looking down at his lap. 

“I understand!” you put on the cheeriest voice you could at the moment, “you should go chase your dreams Donghan, you’ll be happier than I can ever make you!” 

And maybe those words made his heart ache, and maybe those words made him reconsider being an idol. Was it really worth it leaving you? And maybe the soft thud against the door, and soft sobs he heard as he lingered in the hall made him question all of his choices.

JBJ is a fan created group of eliminated Produce 101 Season 2 contestants. It was inspired by the fan created group IBI from Produce 101 Season 1.

At first, the initials stood for the saying “Please give us more screentime” in Korean, but fans eventually changed it because they just wanted the members to be happy

Group originally consists of 7 members, but 1 of them is currently inactive because he’s having troubles with his company

Our fandom name is Joyful, and JBJ love us even if we a hot mess LOL

I honestly believe he’s one of the best leaders because he’s so selfless and just wants the best for everyone

Before JBJ, he went on Heyo TV with other PD 101 Trainees and they were a group called Prinsix, and when RBW’s Lee Gunhee kept referring to him as Kenta, Cube’s Yoo Seonho got all sulky and went “Kenta HYUNG.”

Cried the second hardest during their first win, and like??? Can you imagine?? Moving to a foreign country and starting your career from the bottom up, and not even being assured that you’ll actually DEBUT or even become somewhat popular, and going on a shitshow like pd101 that only cares about like 10 of the trainees at most? Damn, i could never. He literally deserves the world.

But, in all seriousness sometimes yongguk isn’t confident in himself, and it breaks my heart because he’s such a beautiful human and he works so hard, so everyone and anyone that has a problem with yongguk GOTTA GET THROUGH ME FIRST, COME AT ME, HOME GIRL WILL THROW SOME HANDS FOR YONGGUK

Almost made it to Top 20, but Guanlin took 20th place instead, and you could honestly see how yongguk was a little disappointed that he was so close but missed the chance by a single place, but now he’s in jbj and a lot of people love him, and y’all should CONTINUE TO LOVE HIM pls.

Taehyun stared at the writing covering his forearm, no longer questioning it as he realized what it meant a while ago. Everyone has a soulmate, and once paired up, everything written on your soulmate will also be written on you. Taehyun still remembers the first time your handwriting adorned his body. He had gotten out of the shower after coming home late from practice, threw on some clothes and jumped into bed. As he was checking his phone, he felt a slight tingle on his arm as the words be strong began to appear.

At first he freaked out, not showing anyone because he didn’t know what the words meant or where they had come from. But after taking some time, he realized he had finally gotten a soulmate.

The other members hadn’t gotten theirs yet, which was understandable because it often was a long process. But they couldn’t wait for that day to come, always asking Taehyun if anything new was written on his hands or arms. If he had any idea of who you were. But that was what he hated about this whole soulmate thing. How was he supposed to find you? He had only written something once or twice for you to see, being so busy and all. Plus how was he supposed to explain who he was to you? The whole idea of finding you excited Taehyun, but he was fearful that he’d never actually have it happen.

It had been a few months since he’d found out about you being his soulmate, though he still didn’t know who you were. But Taehyun liked it, your occasional words of encouragement gracing his skin keeping him sane through the craziness of promoting with his group. Today as he was stressed about JBJ’s comeback performance for their new song, the word relax appeared on his wrist with a slight burn like all the others did. Taehyun smiled to himself, taking a deep breath as he calmed downed and was ready to take the stage.

After the performance Taehyun and the boys changed and waited in the dressing room until it was time for them to head back to the dorm. “Hyung, you didn’t seem nervous at all today. Get a little note from her today?” Taehyun rolled his eyes as Hyunbin climbed into the van next to him. “I did.” Taehyun just smiled to himself as he looked at the word on his wrist one again. “Are you gonna say anything back? You never say anything back, please say something back! This is like a real life drama, you need to keep it interesting.”

“What do I even say? I don’t even know her, I don’t know what to say. And I’m not gonna write a paragraph to her telling my whole life story.” The two boys sat in silence as the van started off towards the dorm.

Without consulting the others on what to say, considering it was his soulmate after all, Taehyun grabbed a marker from his bag, quickly writing something on his arm while the other members were sleeping or distracted by their phones.

His heart was racing so fast as he put the marker back in his bag, scared to think that in a few minutes the words would be on your skin. That you’d finally know he appreciated your words of encouragement, whether or not the words were really meant for him. Would you be just as excited to receive a message from him as he was when he got one from you?

You were.

Lying in bed, you were ready to call it a night. Scrolling one last time through Instagram before putting your phone down at your bedside. As you closed your eyes, you felt the slight burning on your forearm that was vaguely familiar to you. Pulling your arm from under your pillow, you noticed the words beginning to appear, I know they aren’t meant for me, but I appreciate your messages. You were shocked, to say the least. You’d only found out about your soulmate a few weeks ago, because he had finally replied to you letting you know. It made you wonder just how long the two of you had been matched. If it was long, maybe he just wasn’t into the whole message thing. But you didn’t care, you still did as you normally did, writing words of encouragement for yourself on your skin. Figuring that the words would maybe benefit him every once and awhile too.

His responses before included a smiley face and thanks. So for him to send something so long, you were surprised. You wondered what to say back, did you start a conversation with him? Surely your arms would run out of space by the morning. Luckily the words fade after 24 hours. Did you give him a short response, a little pay back for his two previous responses?

You thought of what to say, your pen hovering over your skin for some time before you’d finally decided on something. Hoping it wasn’t dull or pushed him away from responding to you ever again.

It wasn’t long after that response that Taehyun had finally gotten up the courage to write to you and ask if you two could text. Though he enjoyed the messages on his arms, it wasn’t ideal for long conversations. At first you were a bit unsure, you two were taking the next step in whatever relationship this was and to be honest it made you nervous. But you agreed, giving him your number while he did the same. For now, you knew him as Tae. He was apprehensive to give you his whole first name, though it was common, in case you would realize who he was. But he knew you as y/n, you having no reason to keep your name from him. You talked frequently, still sending him words of encouragement as he really did love getting those messages from you. Sometimes he was late replying, or texted you at random hours. Just saying it was because he was busy with friends or working. It made you wonder what exactly his job was that kept him up until 2 sometimes 3 in the morning. But you two agreed on no specifics, at least not yet.

Though you liked it, keeping things interesting, you couldn’t help but feel like you didn’t really know Taehyun. Sure he didn’t know too much about you, but he did know your name. Why couldn’t you know his? It made you feel as if he was hiding something from you, or he didn’t want to be completely honest with you. But if you were soulmates, surely you could tell each other everything about one another. IF the universe felt you were perfect for one another..

But you respected his decision, figuring he had a good enough reason and he’d tell you eventually. Like most nights, you lay in bed. Scrolling through your phone, heading to YouTube only to find a video of your favorite group JBJ playing drinking games. Immediately you clicked on it, the idea of the members tipsy, or even drunk already making you laugh. As the video began your eye immediately went to Taehyun. He was your favorite member, and you’d been in love with him for a while. First seeing him when you randomly clicked on a suggested HOTSHOT music video, then again on Produce 101. You didn’t know what it was about him, but you were drawn to him. You loved his smile, his laugh, everything about him really.

You smiled to yourself as you watched the video, laughing at the members as they played the different games. But as Taehyun reached across the table, you couldn’t help but notice something on the back of his hand. Being a huge fan of Taehyun you knew he didn’t have any tattoos. And if he got one, surely you and other fans would know. Especially if it was on his hand. You paused the video, trying to get a better look. Only being able to confirm it was a word, the writing being unclear because of the video quality. Figuring there might be a better shot later, you continued the video. And as the boys all held up their drinks to cheers, you got the view of his hand you needed.

Immediately your jaw hit the floor as you saw the word smile followed by a smiley face. You had written that on your hand a little over a week ago, surely when this video had been filmed. First, you were shocked Taehyun hadn’t tried to cover it up. But now things started to make more sense. Why he didn’t tell you his full name, why he was always working so late or doing stuff with friends. He wasn’t lying to you, he just didn’t know how to explain who he was.

Sighing to yourself you wondered if you should message him, tell him you know who he is. But what if he stops talking to you? Afraid that you’re either a crazy fan, or you just don’t want to be with someone like him. Though neither of those were true, you decided not to say anything for now.

The following days after you’d realized the identity of your soulmate, Taehyun noticed you had been acting different. Well, as best he could through a phone at least. He tried figuring out what was wrong, but he got no response. It was true that you had been ignoring him, but it was the only thing you could do until you figured out how to tell him you knew. You didn’t want to stop talking to Taehyun, but now that you knew who he was. That he was your favorite idol who you had liked for so long, that he was your soulmate. You couldn’t help but question the things you would say to him, fearful you’d say something stupid and embarrass yourself.

But Taehyun missed your messages. Just wishing he’d get a little encouragement from you, but instead he got nothing. As he and the boys were getting ready for a big concert, Taehyun kept glancing at his arm. Nothing. The others noticed him, a nervous wreck to put it nicely. And they too became worried. “Hyung, you gotta try to just relax okay? You can do this without a message from her.” Taehyun nodded as their mics were being hooked up, realizing Hyunbin was right. He would have to go on stage and perform without words from you. Though he really didn’t want to.

And as the boys were told to walk towards the stairs at the back of the stage, Taehyun felt that all too familiar burning on his arm once again. Quickly rolling up his sleeve he wasted no time to look for the message.

You’re gonna be amazing, just breathe

Taehyun looked at his arm confused, the message unlike the others. And though he wished he could write back and try to understand, Hyunbin was pushing him forward as they were going to miss their cue.

He was able to focus and relax after reading your message, but Taehyun was still confused by it. Even as the concert went on, eventually coming to an end and the boys hurrying to change before the fan meeting afterwards. Pulling on his t-shirt Taehyun grabbed his phone to send you a quick text, though not having time to wait for your response as the crew quickly ushered the boys out of the dressing room.

As you waited with the other fans, you felt your phone vibrate in your pocket. You smiled as you saw Taehyun’s names on the screen, swiping to open up the message.

[Tae]: Big day for you or something?

You knew he was probably so confused by the message, wondering the whole concert what you could have meant. He probably thought the message was a reminder for yourself, never once thinking that maybe it was for him and that you’d figured out who he was.

And as you began to move forward in line, Taehyun now coming into view, you had to quickly think of what you would say to him to explain who you were without being too obvious for other people around to notice.

Once at the table you greeted the boys, Taehyun being last, so you kept your words short as you didn’t want to forget what you’d planned. Standing in front of Taehyun you smiled wide, and he smiled back. “Thank you so much for coming, did you like the show?” As he spoke you glanced at his arm while his hand still held yours, seeing your words on his skin.

“Yes, I did. Taehyun, do you always write messages like this to yourself?” He looked at his arm, becoming a bit flustered as he wasn’t sure what to say. “Well-” He started but you quickly interrupted him, slightly rolling up your sleeve to reveal the words on your skin.

“Because, I do that too.”

Taehyun looked at your arm, then at his, and finally at you as you were smiling wide. Soon he was doing the same, wanting to step around the table and hug you and spin you around he was so happy.  while he was gone you started to hang out with an old guy friend from high school. he had texted you asking if you wanted to catch up and you agreed because you had nothing better to do with your time. 

 you went out for coffee a couple times and then it became a regular routine. you would hang out often and people on the streets would often mistake you for a couple. 

 you were in the middle of getting lunch together when you got a text from donghan.

July 12, 2018: We’re Halfway There

안녕하세요,

I am finally halfway through the summer program, and the words my friend Valentino once said during the first week is starting to become reality: "Once we reach halfway through, it's going to go by fast". Now, I'm dreading the last half of the program knowing that I will be on a plane ride back to Los Angeles in a blink of an eye.

Happy three weeks here in Seoul! It's been an eventful week so this is how it went down. This blog recaps the events from Monday to Thursday only. A lot happened on Friday which necessitated a post on its own. Happy reading!

Even though I'm already halfway through, I still have not taken the time to explore the city and visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites or even done any touristy things like visit Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁) or even the Namsan Tower (N서울타워). I hope that it doesn't become one of my biggest regrets during this trip, but my mindset is that the bond I have with my friends right now is not something I could experience ever again but I can always go back to Seoul as a tourist in the future.

Monday, July 9, 2018: Florence messaged me on Kakao back in July 3 if I wanted to go to Super Junior's Ryeowook's fan meet since he was being discharged from the military on July 10. Being broke as we both were, we decided to just visit the cafés that were supported by Ryeowook fans: Café Ego, Café 333, and Andy's Coffee.

We decided to visit Café 333 and Andy's Coffee since they were both located in Hongdae.

Café 333 was our first stop and the place was decked out in Ryeowook's pictures. The counter had a welcome sign for his discharge, and tables were decorated with pictures of the idol. We ordered mocha and chocolate lattes and received a Ryeowook banner and two photo cards on top of the Ryeowook sleeve that came with our lattes.

Then we headed to Andy's Coffee just down the street from Café 333 where we ordered coffee and strawberryade. The coffee place gave us Ryeowook transparent fans and another cup sleeve with our orders.

After our trip, we walked around Hongdae and found the place where they filmed a scene in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (Yeokdo-yojeong Kim Bokjoo/역도요정 김복주) where Joohyung (Nam Joohyuk) was feeding Kim Bok Joo (Lee Sungkyung) with barbeque from the money he "found" on the floor.

We returned to Anam-dong a few hours after we started our day and I realized I have not eaten either breakfast or lunch yet, so I treated myself to one of my favorite places, once again. Remember that bossam (보쌈) place called Ssago (싸고)? I came back there for the third time since I arrived in Seoul, and even then, I was still learning new things such as Koreans actually referring Sprite here as cider (사이다). Odd.

It rained again that day, but it was not as humid as it usually is - the rain was freezing and I was out in Hongdae in a t-shirt and shorts. So, Florence and I went to Spao and bought myself a nice breathable summer sweater that's appropariate for Seoul's humid weather.

I also found out that Singaporeans call umbrella "brolly" thanks to Joyce. I am learning so many new things from Singaporeans, especially coming from being clueless about the culture just three weeks ago - I did not even know what a Singaporean accent was!

In Korean class, I told my professor that I was going to an event hosted by ISC to watch SBS's "The Show" rehearse and perform, so I will be missing class together with two other students, Andrea and Aubrey. The South Korean series is hosted by CLC's Yeeun, NCT's Jeno, and JBJ's Longguo. I got the line up on Monday which consisted of Apink, fromis_9, UNB, Golden Child, ONF, Kim Dong Han, MYTEEN, Jessi, Yoon Mirae, among others. KCON LA recently announced the lineup for this year's event which includes both fromis_9 and Golden Child, so I'm basically saving myself from spending an extra $100 to go both concert days to see the same groups I'm seeing here in Seoul for free.

Tuesday, July 10, 2018: SBS's "The Show" begins at 6:30 PM KST, so I had the whole day for myself - as expected, I did nothing. We were supposed to meet at the SBS Prism Tower lobby at 5 PM, and it takes about 40 minutes to get from Anam Station (안압역) to Digital Media City (디지털 비디아 시티); so I left at 3:30 to gave myself some extra time just in case I get lost.

There was a long queue outside SBS Prism Tower for ONF and MYTEEN fans. I was told that these fans don't have tickets and are hoping to go in to see their favorite groups perform, while I was in the lobby researching about the groups performing because the only thing I know about everybody was that they were Korean.

Heck, I thought fromis_9 was a boy group.

I was honestly only looking forward to see Jeno and Longguo with my own eyes.

My friends start slowly arriving and one of them went to a coffeeshop nearby that had Longguo on the cup sleeve, which made me more excited for the show to start. Salli and Carolina arrived and I didn't know they were even accepted to go to the show, so I spent the rest of the time until 6:30 with Andrea (Guatemalan), Aubrey (Chinese), Salli (Puerto Rican) and Carolina (Brazilian) teaching each other different Spanish dialects, Brazilian Portuguese, and Chinese words.

We were seated at 6:17 PM and the show started on time until 8 PM. BABA performed first, then TARGET, fromis_9, elris, Kyungri, Golden Child, MYTEEN, Kim Dong Han, Migyu, Jessi, ONF, The East Light, UNB, Gugudan SEMINA, Yoon Mirae, and Apink. Apink ended up winning that night - no surprises there.

Salli, Carolina and I took the subway back to Anam-dong together where Carolina told me about the Hanyang University Cruise Party - a booze cruise with unlimited drinks for an hour and ending the night at one of Gangnam's most revered clubs - Octagon - famous for being very selective with its guests. Octagon rejects most foreigners and men who are not up to standards with its rich beautiful image. Koreans usually get in for free and foreigners pay ₩30,000. The booze cruise was only ₩30,000 if we buy it before July 11 at 10 PM as a group of more than six people. One individual ticket is ₩45,000, and the tickets get cheaper the more people in the group.

Well, we managed to get more than six people within ten minutes and we bought the tickets together thanks to Wendelyn's credit card.

The three of us were starving when we reached Anam-dong, so I introduced both Salli and Carolina to, you've guessed it, bossam (보쌈) in the same place called Ssago (싸고). As you might have known by now, I am becoming obsessed with it.

After dinner, we went ahead to the Baskin Robbins place where I told both of them about the cute worker I saw last week. We checked the place out and no luck - though we ended up getting Pus in Boots cups and milkshakes to end our night.

I could not sleep later that night and I was still awake until 3 AM just in time for Thai, Davy, and Hyunjic-oppa (현직오빠) to get ready and meet up at Chicken Bus to watch the World Cup semi-finals with France competing against Belgium. I was awake already anyway so why not, right? I met with them downstairs. Matt and Sophie joined with us in front of Frontier House before going down the stairs to Chicken Bus. Later in the night, Wendelyn and Florence met with us at the restaurant itself while the game was playing.

Thai, Davy, and Hyunjic-oppa (현직오빠) were betting for Belgium to go into the finals, while Matt and I placed our money on France. Matt and Hyunjic-oppa (현직오빠) made a bet to pay for the winner's entire alcohol consumption for that night. We watched the game Korean-style with chicken and maekju (백주), or chimaek (치백), until the game ended at 5 AM, just in time for daylight to break.

If you've watched the 2018 World Cup finals, then you know that Matt and I won the bet.

Wednesday, July 11, 2018: I slept in until 2 PM that day and had no other plans besides updating my Blackpink blog. I went to the nearby PC bang (PC방) to play around and edit my Tumblr page and my past blogs in the late afternoon. I type my blogs on my phone and the Tumblr app has very limited options on setting up my page and my posts. I did not know the culture around PC방 prior to arriving, so I had to do some research.

1. PC방 are ubiquitous in Seoul - meaning that there is a PC방 in every corner of the street, almost as many as noraebang (노래방) places. Some PC방 are membership only, so you need to sign up and make an account to use the computers. Some, such as the one I go to, would hand you a card with a number on it and you log in using that card number.

2. They're insanely cheap! The PC방 I've seen can go from ₩500-₩1,500 per hour, so sometimes whenever I have nothing to do during the day and all of my friends are in class, I hang out in a PC방 and scroll down Tumblr or watch Are You Human Too? (Neodo Inganini?/너도 인간이니?) in DramaCool since both Viki and DramaFever are not working here in South Korea.

I logged out and caught up with Matt, Florence, Sophie, and Minki-hyung (민기형) at Sulbing Korean Dessert Cafe (설빙) just next to Chicken Bus and Seorae Korean Barbeque. They ordered Green Tea Snowflakes and Mango Snowflakes, while I got the Chocolate Brownie snowflakes.

Sophie asked me what I ordered and after telling them, everybody started laughing.  Minki-hyung (민기형) made a guess earlier what I would be getting and he guessed right - I was becoming too predictable.

And when I got my order, I did not realize how humongous the portion was.

I keep forgetting that I am in South Korea and not America - the portion sizes here are way bigger since most of the cafés and restaurants are catered for couples (again - couple culture dominates Seoul).

Going back to our dorms, we bumped into Valentino and Cara where we stood in front of the cheap street food restaurant everybody constantly buzzes about (Goreun Aetsal/고른 앳살) for a good hour.

Thursday, July 12, 2018: It was exam day for me, and it was my first one too. So as the good student that I am, I decided to dedicate my whole morning studying - in Donghae's Haru & One Day Café.

I planned to spend a few hours studying for my Korean exam on basic conversational sentences while sipping on Donghae's drink then head to the nearby Kondae (건대) shopping and food district to eat out.

I ordered a glass of lemon juice, took advantage of Donghae's Wi-Fi, and studied.

For ten minutes.

Then I sat there for the next hour looking at fans come and take pictures with the giant Audrey Hepburn portrait hanging on the wall. I was very distracted that day and decided to just walk around Kondae (건대) and look for something to eat.

I scoured through the whole place under the 96-degree weather and found nothing - I was craving pork or beef that I did not have to cook and was within my ₩10,000 budget, but to no avail. Most of the restaurants I've found served pretty much all chicken or meat you have to cook yourself and other menu items I was not craving.

Kondae (건대), the area surrounding Konkuk University, has plenty of Japanese restaurants, which is very lacking around Anam-dong, the area surrounding Korea University. Sometimes, I just want to take a break from Korean food and stuff myself with something different - Japanese, Mexican, Vietnamese, you name it.

I went back to Anam-dong to try out the cheap street food restaurant by the campus to see what was the hype about. The menu was all in Korean, but luckily I know enough for me to differentiate ramen (라면) from tteokbokki (떡볶이).

The prices were very cheap - regular kimbap (원조김밥) was ₩1,500, tteok-ramyeon (떡라면) was ₩3,000, and Busan fish cakes (Busan eomuk/부산어묵) was ₩2,000. Having spent some time around Myeongdong and Hongdae, I knew these prices were within range. One stick of fish cake in Myeongdong was about the same price, so I expected to be eating a plate of kimbap, a bowl of tteok-ramyeon, and a stick of eomuk.

Bad idea - I really keep forgetting that I'm not in America anymore.

The portion sizes were humongous and the three plates took up the entire space of my whole table.

It looked like I was about to film a mukbang video.

I messaged my friends who were nearby to crash at the place and help me finish my food - Florence, Matt, Lina, and Wendelyn came to rescue.

Florence and I ran out of the restaurant to catch our 4:50 Korean language classes right after the rest arrived.

We took a different route and entered the Media Hall where they had a TV situated at the hallway leading to Woodang Hall - and they were playing the K-Pop flash mob dance we filmed a week prior.

The class was starting in a few seconds and my professor wanted us to be on time for the exam since she was not extending the exam time for us if we come late.

Well, the exam was easy - it was actually a quiz. I was mentally preparing for a midterm-type exam since everybody else was studying for midterms.

I finished it in six minutes and lecture continued per usual.

After class, I invited my friends to go to Dongdaemun with me to walk around and maybe buy some clothes and souvenirs - Joyce, Valentino, Matt, Sophie, Wendelyn, and Cara joined with us and took the subway together to Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station (동대문 역사문화공원). We walked up and past the LED Rose Garden and met up with Thai and Davy, who just came from eating live octopus at Gwangjang Market, then we headed to eat street foods by the Migliori Mall.

We took the bus from Dongdaemun back to Anam and met up with Minki-hyung (민기형) for some makgeolli, rice alcohol famous for its hangover headache, at Tosokjumak Makgeolli House (토속주막 막걸리) just under Monaco Bar. I have never had makgeolli before, but I had an understanding that makgeolli is sipped from a bowl with both hands, but I did not know that it was actually served in kettle pots! The ahjumma (아줌마) serving us placed two kettles next to me and I did not know what it was for - I asked the group if they ordered tea and Minki-hyung (민기형) laughed and told me that it was the makgeolli.

We played drinking games for the rest of the night - such as taking a sip if we say the word "you", rotating our names and responding to the name of the second person to our left, placing everything on the table with two taps, and removing the little man from everything we picked up and called him Hyunjic-oppa (현직오빠).

We left the makgeolli place at almost 2 AM and I bumped into my drunk friends from my Korean class - Darren, Peter, Angela, Cindy, and Sharon. Peter, Cindy, and Angela had too much soju for the night and we walked them back to Frontier House and Anam Global House. We spent a whole hour outside the CU Convenience Store just under the hill from CJ International and Frontier House trying to get Peter off of the streets and back to his dorm.

Darren and I managed to get him to his room and back to our dorms by 4 AM and Darren messaged me that he was treating me with a drink sometime for my help - earlier in the night, he was lightheadedly telling me how high his alcohol tolerance was and I wanted to challenge him since my tolerance is also in the higher side.

So, I'm looking forward to the night when we actually find out whose tolerance is actually higher - hopefully we find out this week.

My week 3 blog ends here, and I will be starting on my Friday blog hopefully today.

It's Monday of week 4 and I am looking forward for this weekend since this Friday is the booze cruise - I invited other people for the event, those I haven't had the time to hang out with or the people I met for a few minutes but want to get to know better.

I am dreading the end of this summer program. I have noticed that I've been taking my time absorbing every moment, looking at the faces of the friends I've made here and the buildings that have been part of my daily walks to school and realizing that I only have two more weeks to go to make the best out of this amazing chapter of my life. I really hope that one day, I will find the time to reunite with each and every one of them and relive these moments together.

It would be very easy to reunite with the Singaporeans since their country is so small and more than half of my friends are Singaporean.

This gives me the biggest incentive to visit Singapore very soon since I expect it to be one big reunion. Until then!

Don’t Come Back

Ex-lover!Kim Sanggyun AU

Note: this was requested by this anon! anw, feeling a little sad when i heard the news about JBJ. but well, all we can do now is to wish the best and cheer them on even after the disbandment.

Your long-awaited single, Don’t Come Back, was finally released and it unexpectedly rose to the top of the charts. You didn’t expect your debut to turn out this way, especially since it is just your debut and that you weren’t part of the mainstream scene. Sure you’ve sort of made a name for yourself by working with other artists, but as a producer/lyricist. However, those songs have never gone that high on the charts so this was a big deal for you. It felt like a reward for you, after all those years of being the one who worked behind-the-scenes for other artists.

Due to that situation, you have been getting calls and requests to appear on shows, interviews, magazine photoshoots and whatnot to promote your debut. So here you are in your studio with your manager, discussing the details and pointers that you need to take note of before going on those schedules.

“Can you explain about your song to me again? So that i know what you can filter out when you talk about it later,” you took a deep breath, before you started explaining again, even though your manager have heard the story plenty of times.

You had first started working under a music label when you were just starting out as a music engineer and lyricist. While you were working there, you sometimes worked with the already-debuted idols. But most of the time, you worked with trainees, helping them mix songs for their monthly evaluation. You too became a mentor to some of the trainees for lyric-writing and music production - this was how you met your first love, Kim Sanggyun.

He was a trainee under the same music label and you were his mentor for lyric-writing. Through those sessions, you grew very close to one another, well also partly due to his flirty tendacies that you may or may not have fell for. Apart from that, both of you too leaned on each other for support, always cheering one another on.

After maybe a year or two, you decided to leave the company in order to pursue your music independently. Despite that, you and Sanggyun were still close as ever. In fact, maybe even too close for comfort. Both of you often spend days (okay more like nights) hanging out in your studio, going on cup noodle runs or just taking long walks around the neighbourhood. Your feelings for him started blooming, which you tried to keep on the down-low, knowing that Sanggyun probably didn’t see you that way - till that one night.

Sanggyun came by your studio one night after practice, unannounced. It shocked you, seeing him come by without notice even though he comes over very often.

“I can’t do this anymore. I’m in love with you,” he suddenly blurted out to you.

A part of you couldn’t register what he just said. Another part of you thought you were just dreaming. But one thing you knew for sure was that he was very sincere with his confession. With that, both of you began the first day of your relationship - your lowkey relationship.

You had always wondered how it’d be like to have a lover, considering that this was your first relationship. You even created scenarios in your head about it. Being with Sanggyun was exactly like how you’d imagined in your mind. He’s such a happy virus and he managed to bring out that aspect in you as well. Despite already being together, he was still as flirtatious with you, like when you first met - this somehow still makes you blush and your heart beat like crazy. It also makes you want to make him the happiest person ever.

Even as years went by, both of you were still in the honeymoon phase and was still able to keep the relationship lowkey, until that very day.

You were waiting for Sanggyun in your studio, feeling excited to show him some of your new works. When you heard the doorbell rang, you quickly ran to the door, knowing that it was probably him. However, you were greeted by a pretty gloomy Sanggyun, along with your ex-colleague who happens to be his manager at the moment.

His manager knew about your relationship with Sanggyun for awhile now but decided not to say a word about it, even though he knew that trainees and idols are given a dating ban, especially idols. So this rose to become a concern since Sanggyun was going to debut soon as an idol. After much discussion and convincing, you managed to save your relationship but you had to be 100 times more careful now.

After a few months, Sanggyun finally debut in the music industry and you started getting more projects to work on with other artists. Your relationship was still doing well. Even though you don’t get to meet as often, your heart was at ease, seeing Sanggyun being happy, doing the things he always wanted to do.

Later, about a year into his debut, Sanggyun was involved in a dating rumour. There were photos of both of you in public. It clearly shows Sanggyun but no one was able to decipher who you were as your face was totally covered and your figure hidden beside him. This bump in the road led you back to your old company where you discussed about the issue at hand.

They had decided to reveal that Sanggyun was indeed in a relationship. However, instead of you, it would be with one of the trainees in the company. This was their way of playing with the media and to create buzz for the upcoming new group. The idea didn’t sit well in you - i mean, who would feel that way? But you gave in, for the sake of Sanggyun’s happiness, even if it did hurt your feelings.

Slowly, the so-called new couple emerged and you got thrown aside. You understood that Sanggyun had to be with the trainee, for the sake of the rumour. But you couldn’t stand it, seeing the person you love, in the arms of another person. It also didn’t help that everytime you met Sanggyun, all he ever talks about is that trainee - how they have similar interests and habits and how they practiced together often.

Hearing how similar they were made you realised how different you were. Despite being in the same industry, both of you live very different lifestyles. You are constantly at the studio, working behind-the-scenes, whereas Sanggyun is always on the frontline, in front of cameras and experiencing the glitz and glamour. The trainee would’ve been a better suit for him, especially since they would eventually live the same lifestyle. You also felt that you were in his way of his happiness, since you being with him became an issue in his career twice.

That night, you made up your mind to end your relationship with Sanggyun, for the sake of his happiness. You dropped him a text, simply explaining that you were in his way and that he deserved to be with someone who resembled him, someone who wasn’t you. You knew he deserved to hear you out in person but you couldn’t bring yourself to do so. Afterwards, you blocked and deleted his number. You even erased every single trace of him - photos, videos, songs, etc. You knew that if you saw anything that reminded you of Sanggyun, you would’ve drop everything and ran back to him, asking him to come back to you.

That was when you decided to start anew. You moved to a new studio in a new neighbourhood and started drowning yourself in more work, mainly in the underground scene, with hopes of not remembering or bumping into him. It did work temporarily, at least it was better than nothing.

As you got busier, you managed to get yourself a manager, whom you’re very close to now, to help you manage your projects and work activities. He too was the one who suggested that now would be a good time for you to debut on the frontline - as an artist, not a producer or lyricist. That was when you revisited the song (aka your debut single) you did when you were getting over Sanggyun. Little did you knew that it had become the song that shook the nation.

You had to admit that you were nervous, having to go on broadcast shows and doing events. That meant that there are chances of you bumping into Sanggyun, after so long. You weren’t sure if you would be able to handle it, despite it being a few years ago.

After the meeting, you decided to take a walk around your old neighbourhood to calm your nerves. It did bring back old memories that you want to go back to but you knew better not to dwell into it.

“_______” you heard a muffled voice, calling out your name.

You were hoping that it was not who you were thinking of but it is exactly who you thought of.

“Sanggyun, what are you here? Won’t you get into trouble for being out here this late?” you cursed at your mind for remembering these things too well.

“it’s okay, i got permission. so... congrats on your song. you made it to the top like you always wanted,” you quietly thanked him.

“is the song about-”

“yeah,”

“i figured. you did it well, as always,”

The air surrounding the both of you got even more awkward and still with the situation. Just as you were about to walk away, Sanggyun spoke up.

“i came here because i really miss you. i want you back. i just keep thinking of you ever since you left me. is there any way for me to come back?” he looked at you with his sad eyes, the ones you knew you couldn’t resist.

“i’m sorry, Sanggyun. i just. i can’t. everything’s different. we’re not. we... i’m sorry but i just can’t,” you quickly turned away.

Before you took another step away from him, you turned to him.

“whatever i said in the song... please do it. just pass by me if you ever see me again. don’t look at me,” you looked at him once last time before making your way back home.
