isagi grew up with supportive parents, so he has a lot of respect for the strength it takes to raise a kid alone. 

if you tell him the father walked out on you, he gets super serious, quiet and tense in a way you haven’t seen before. 

“you don’t have to tell me everything now, but if he ever tries to come back, you let me deal with him.” and the way he says it? dead serious. 

when he meets your kid for the first time, he brings a little soccer ball and awkwardly crouches down like he’s meeting royalty.

but it works. he’s silly, energetic, and so patient – your kid absolutely adores him.

you catch him googling “how to be a good stepdad” at 3 AM. you don’t bring it up. but you definitely screenshot it.

bachira lights up when you tell him.

he’s thrilled. he doesn’t ask anything about the father unless you bring it up. he’s more focused on how he can be a fun and loving person in your child’s life. 

he sees your kid and immediately goes “wanna see my monster voice?” and makes the weirdest, funniest noise ever. 

the two of them are chaotic together. 

you walk into the living room and there’s glitter everywhere, paper hats on both of them, and he’s letting your kid draw a mustache on his face. 

“we’re pirates now,” bachira says, completely serious. “you have to pay the glitter tax.” 

when your kid calls him “meguru,” he beams. when they accidentally call him “dad” one day? he tears up a little. 

you: “you okay?” 

him, teary-eyed: “i would die for that child.” 

also probably teaches your kid to climb furniture and you have to ban them from the couch for a week.

“oh,” he says when you tell him, blinking slowly. “that’s kinda cool.” 

nagi doesn’t react big. he just accepts it immediately, like it’s just another part of you. 

but inside? he’s kind of in awe. like you raised a tiny human? by yourself? sounds exhausting. 

“you must be really strong,” he mumbles, head on your shoulder. 

he’s surprisingly good with kids. laid-back, unbothered, and doesn’t treat them like they’re fragile. 

your child is obsessed with sitting on his shoulders while he walks around the apartment like a lazy giraffe. 

he lets them play games on his phone, and one time they accidentally deleted a rare gacha pull. he just shrugged. 

“they’re more fun to hang out with than reo.” 

he naps with them on the couch and sleeps through them using his hair as a blanket. 

he gets attached without even noticing. one day he buys a switch for them and says it’s “because they’re annoying when they’re bored” but you find it in his shopping history under “gift for my mini me.”

freezes when you tell him. 

absolutely panics inside but tries to stay stoic. 

“oh. okay. i see.” (he doesn’t see anything. his brain is buffering.) 

but once he calms down, he starts asking thoughtful, gentle questions. 

“what do they like to eat?” 

“do they know their father?” 

“are you… okay?” 

when you explain your ex bailed after the pregnancy, he clenches his jaw and gets really quiet. 

he just nods and says, “that’s not your fault. he’s pathetic.” 

rin’s not the best with kids at first. he’s awkward, stiff, stands like a statue, but he’s trying so hard. 

your kid hands him a toy and rin just… holds it. like it’s a grenade. 

“do i… do i play with it?” 

but one afternoon, your kid falls asleep on his lap and something in him just softens. 

from then on, he’s all in. buys extra snacks for them, watches their shows even if he doesn’t get them. 

“this blue dog… why is he emotional?” 

“it’s bluey, rin. let it happen.”

you expect him to be judgmental. he’s not. at all. 

he hears “i’m a single mom” and just says “okay.” 

“you’re still hot. and you’re a good mom. sounds like a win to me.” 

he doesn’t ask about the father unless you bring it up. when you do, he’s indifferent on the outside, but furious on the inside. 

“he left? while you were pregnant?” 

you nod. 

he just hums and says, “if he shows up, tell him to meet me. i’ll ruin his life.” 

when he meets your kid, he keeps his usual cool attitude, but your child’s the only one who gets to see him smile freely. 

your kid: “can you make silly faces?” 

sae: “no.” 

also sae, five seconds later: pulling the most cursed expression you’ve ever seen. 

he buys expensive stuff for your kid without blinking – custom sneakers, private tutors, limited edition toys. 

“i like spoiling them. deal with it.” 

you catch him once, watching your kid sleep while he absentmindedly brushes their hair out of their face. 

he looks at you and says, “this is the only family i’ve ever actually wanted.”

The Death of Nagi

"It doesn't matter how you live... but just don't die before me, you know?"

Parents were not meant to outlive their children. Nagi was never meant to outlive Reo -- he never wanted to in the first place. He only ever came to Blue Lock because Reo promised to "stay with him until the end," only ever played soccer because "it was the first time someone had ever showed interest in a guy like [him]."

Because of this, Nagi didn't fear [Death] the same way that Reo did.

Nagi had always lived half of a life. [Death] just meant returning to those listless days. But Reo...

Reo became hyperaware of his inadequacies from the moment Nagi left him in the second selection. He's been overwhelmed by his fear of his dream's death for hundreds of chapters. Reo thought he was the weak link, that his death would be the end of his dream with Nagi.

Meanwhile, Nagi lived with lazy confidence in both him and Reo. He didn't even comprehend the possibility of Reo's or his elimination.

Nagi had never acted on "pure survival instincts," because he'd never feared [Death]. By Ego's definition, then, everything he did in Blue Lock was out of Love.

Only when Ego had said it out loud did a small fear of [Death] sprout in Nagi for the first time. All he had known before was that he didn't want Reo to die (Nagi was driven by Love), but he hadn't considered that dying himself would also mean losing Reo.

He panics.

The tragedy is that Ego's spiel about dreams hits him just a bit too late. He's always been willing to die -- [Death] wouldn't affect his love. But now... now he's realizing he wants to live for his love. To stay by Reo's side, to support him and be supported. He doesn't want to leave. He begs, desperately, for his love to manifest as ego, so that he can stay, so that he can live.

Many have characterized Nagi as selfish. I don't think this is the case. He makes every decision based on what he thinks will benefit Reo. His survival in Blue Lock has been a consequence, not a priority. But here, we see Nagi finally turning selfish.

He's the one afraid of being without Reo.

He's the one afraid of being alone.

The same monster that enveloped Bachira envelops Nagi.

But while Bachira could separate his love for soccer from his love for Isagi...

Nagi... could not.

Nagi wants to play soccer to stay by Reo's side. He's always been satisfied, as long as he was together with Reo. He never manifested a dream beyond that. The undead don't dream.

He pursued a goal of beating Isagi, after seeing how upset Reo was from losing to him, and he won. He avenged them. All he wants now is to be by Reo for as long as he can.

But dreams like that don't survive in Blue Lock.

Nagi and Reo have always been Ego's foil -- the question of whether Love could overpower Ego.

And Love (Nagi) died.

i do think the thing with bluelock though is like . you really do have to do some digging to sift through random ass characterization. the main story only focuses on isagi but the extras will give you so much info on everything else so it’s like a hassle sometimes

i often feel like kaneshiro has intentionally set it up this way not only bc he loves his characters but also to give bluelock a proper fandom. usually this is something that makes a series bad but for whatever reason he really pulls it off

AllSagi is so funny to me because 1) it has SOME grounds in canon, 2) Sae literally calls Isagi the heart of blue lock, and 3) every single fic I’ve come across touches on it as if the author snorted the deepest bowels of crack and characterizes the characters so LEFT from canon that I end up loving them instead of hating them

I normally dont tolerate harem ships mostly because the characterizations annoy me but something about AllSagi is just so. Crack. Unserious. Batshit insane. That my tolerance levels just disappear.

Also lowkey because I’m a multishipper and the idea of all my ships coexisting is so funny considering I need VERY specific scenarios to play out for it to even make sense so…

IN CONNECTION, KaiSagi is a ship that I will consume grudgingly BUT I refuse to write seriously. Idk (i actually do and it’s because I love Ness so much) why I hate Kaiser so much (not seriously) but I do and it makes me unable to create proper KaiSagi content without making it unrequited or have it end with RinSagi and Kaiser sitting there regretting everything.

I wonder if there’s any narrative purpose that Nagi’s final match in the NEL arc is against Bachira and not, say, Barou. If Kaneshiro really wanted, he could’ve made it so that Nagi would face off against Barou in the final match, but no… he put Bachira instead.

Bachira. From FC Barcha, the team that kept losing despite everybody performing well. The team that’s been thought of to be the “easiest” to beat. The team that’s being entirely carried by Bachira.

If Nagi wins against Bachira, there’s hardly much of an impact… There’s barely any expectation for Bachira to win from within the story and from the fandom. Bachira, after all, has never been set up as one of the “most powerful” players.

If it were against Barou, though, that would be hype.

But if Nagi loses against Bachira? That would be huge

I love Bachira. He’s my #1 favorite character. But Bachira has been characterized as that fun little guy who plays for a good time and not really as some Big Boss player, you know?

Nagi, however...

He’s the genius. The big boss in the first selection arc. One of Isagi’s three main rivals. A protagonist if Blue Lock had been told in his POV.

Can you imagine him losing against Bachira???

I don’t know what Kaneshiro has in store for Nagi, but whether he wins or loses in the final match, it’s an L anyway.

Nagi winning against Bachira—eh, good for him, he finally won a match.

Nagi losing against Bachira—what the hell???

In contrast, Bachira’s situation is win-win. Bachira winning against Nagi is a big upgrade. Bachira losing against Nagi is also not really a surprise. He’s up after the genius, after all.

With this, I think Nagi is gonna lose...

Almost one third of this fandom is good at missing the concept of most of the characters in the franchise.

First it's about misjudging Kiyora's character and his current choice of siding with Kaiser in order to benefit his standing in the program and how it was tagged as "betrayal."

Why are people surprised on this? Players are doing everything to survive since the first season starting with Kuon selling out information of Team Z to other teams because it would increase his chances of survival then to Nagi picking out Isagi's team to get stronger and fulfill his dream of winning the World Cup with Reo then to Raichi and Kunigami giving out an assist to Kaiser in this match out of necessity. This is just to name a few. Then Kiyora gets the brunt of it when he chooses not to side with Isagi. The fandom needs to stop glazing at him because this ruins the characterization of both characters. I love Isagi as the MC but the simps who doesn't get his character tarnishes it and he is being branded by wild, illogical assumptions. Why would Kiyora do that if he can't see the possibility of Isagi scoring? Most of the opponents' defenders are watching Isagi's movements so this limits his actions and possibilities of scoring a goal while Kaiser is there being open and while we have Charles and Rin blocking him, the opportunity is on his side because the conditions for his unfinished Magnus move is completed and provided by Kiyora through his ballspin assist.

Second, how is the fandom diminishing Nanase's worth just because he is not godlike levels of soccer skills such as with Karasu? It's even wild that the fandom thinks that Tokimitsu should be the one entering the top 23 when I can't see him contributing anything noteworthy to his team yet. Yes, the match is still unfinished and we've got to see some more of him but right now out of all the players who are in the danger zone that needs to climb higher, it is Nanase who deserves it because objectively speaking he is doing more compared to the others who are not Charles or Shidou. He is actively doing anything to provide the necessary entertainment in the live match that can contribute to his standing and bid. Heck, Karasu was busy being cocky and trashtalking Isagi that Isagi managed to easily surpass his blocking. While Nanase who is not even part of the top 23 is doing a lot more useful things to PxG such as assisting Rin, blocking the assists of the opponents and even chasing the ball. Seriously, he has the potential to grow out more as a character and it's wild that the fandom doesn't see that because he's not a godlike level player out there or was given a tragic backstory yet like with the other side characters such as with Hiori or Kiyora.

And lastly the fandom branding Hiori as an Isagi simp is a disgrace.

How the hell did they come up with this conclusion is a bigger question mark to me.

Just because Hiori is providing an assist to Isagi at that moment and he was a big help to Isagi last match against the Ubers doesn't make him a blind follower of the MC.

He was there for him because they're having the same "winning vision" out there in the field.

That's why out of all the Isagi ships that I like, Hiosagi stood out the most because of how they understand each other implicitly.

While Hiori was thankful for Isagi in showing him the light amid his existential crisis and awakening his ego, he's not wasting his time in asserting himself that he's not going to be a blind follower of him and his selfish ego out there in the field. He will create and linked up with another striker if he deems them worthy enough of his assists. And this is why their partnership intrigued me the most because they can keep on each other's toes even moreso with Hiori because he can compete with Isagi's football IQ and analysing the player's motivations and the environment around them.

Please do not ruin my roman empire with out of pocket conclusions about these characters smh.

I like to emphasize isagi's negative traits on my blog because it suits my sense of humor but there is genuinely a pretty big fandom split between people who characterize isagi primarily by his aggression, (the frequency and intensity with which he antagonizes other players, his genuine enjoyment of defeating those players and bending them to his will, and not to mention that time he made a death threat against one of his teammates on the field during a televised match) and his everyman status/normal off-field behavior (his friendship with members of team z, his sincere hero worship of and desire to emulate noel noa, the fact that he's one of only a handful of characters depicted as having a stable, loving relationship with his family). the truth of who isagi actually is lies, like it does for most people, somewhere between those two extremes

Uh quick note tho: most of the characterization of him I've seen has been via fanfics so I'm not 100% sure about how Tumblr views him, so when I say "the fandom" I mean the fandom I've seen from tag searching ao3

From what I've seen there's 3-4 main ways the fandom takes him and thats: 1 uwu soccer boi twying his best, 2 RAHHH SEX GOD, 3 [insert love interest] omg I live for you never leave meeee, 4 shy boy whos good at shit. Which isn't that bad tbh, other fandoms wouldn't even get close to his character, so while I kinda tear at those interpretations they aren't so far from the mark.

1 I think is mostly from anime onlys because at the start of the anime he's kinda like that and people tend to run w/ their first grasp on a character, also his low self esteem and repetitive losses throughout the season can very easily feed into that. However in the manga as the series carries on he gets more and more skills, he gets more egotistical and confident in his own abilities. So seeing this version annoys me because if anyone in this series is gonna be like that it's Igaguri I mean

Look at him, but even then that'd be a stretch.

2 is just frustrating to see everywhere like calm down

3 stems from wanting to ship characters but not knowing how to write individual ships, so the writer defaults back to a cookie cutter dynamic and sorta fits the characters. It happens in every fandom, with every ship. At least once. It's like rule 34 but the porn is optional.

Ah but it doesn't fit Isagi because he's more than capable of leaving people behind if that's what's best for him, it wouldn't be personal for example him and Bachira play against each other all the time and they play to win but they're both still close after the game. He's able to detach emotions from leaving someone behind which is why when they show up again later he's genuinely happy for them, he still likes them. So for Isagi to be like "nOoOooooo I neeeeeeeeeeedddd youuuuuu" it doesn't make sense. And in regards to the 3v3 game against Rin. He was upset about Bachira being taken I think if Bachira had chosen to be on a different team he wouldn't have been so pissed.

4 is just episode 1 and 2. He outgrows his "shyness" immediately, but it is the closest to canon imo. Because Isagi isn't shy per say but he is aware of his limitations (most of the time) which means he does change his plans to accommodate that, not exactly shy but I can see how one could read it that way.

As a bonus I don't mind the chatfics but I'd like if they gave them text accents. I think Isagi is a no punctuation but uses capitalization For Emphasis kinda guy.

Sorry if I didn't answer this how you wanted but I love yapping about characterization.
