“I assume your dancing is better than your brother’s?” Chrissy asks with a small smirk, which Max gives her own impish smile at with a nod.
“My close friend, Miss Jane Hopper, and I have been practicing for quite some time.”
Billy recalls the giggles and chatter all through their home for the last few years, ever since Jane had arrived in the countryside with her father. The girls have been close friends since then and Billy’s happy for it.
“That’s lovely,” Chrissy says with a warm smile, her light eyes flicking over to Heather, “A friendship with your fellow woman is unlike anything else.”
Heather’s returned smile to her close friend is a soft thing, so unlike anything Billy’s ever seen her give a gentleman. He knows of their friendship and just how much deeper it is than that; he believes the two girls to be bound by their souls. He’s watched first-hand how they used to dance around one other, clumsy and skittish and eager. He remembers the first time Heather told him that she’d kissed Chrissy, whose lips were like milk and honey in the spring.
He is beyond happy for them, truly. And he is always happy to see couples in love, if they get the privilege to be. At his age, Billy has long since abandoned the idea that love would one day find him.
Because looking at himself, he wonders what there is to love?
