Hi love :) If headcanons are open, can you do one for winterwitch like they knew each other in HYDRA's basement and fell in love, but they firgit this, and during Civil War they meet again at the airport and remember each other ? Please ? XOXO
You totally reminded me of this little lovely I wrote which kind of touches upon Bucky and Wanda meeting during their Hydra days and gah, I love that idea! My version was more one-sided, as in Bucky notices Wanda – like, a lot – and semi-falls for her that way while Wanda is too distracted with all the experiments to notice the Winter Soldiers that Hydra keeps sending their way to contain the twins while they’re trying to grasp their new powers.
But I could absolutely see a different version where Wanda absolutely notices Bucky and he’s kind of her bodyguard? Like, she’s obviously a little more stable than her brother who just keeps blurring about and running into the walls all the time and it takes a small army of Winter Soldiers to contain him. Her powers are still scary, yes, but she’s in more control than her brother, so they figure one Winter Soldier can handle her if he’s their oldest and strongest one. Which is obviously Bucky.
And Wanda is a little peeved about being followed, but Bucky is quiet and keeps to himself and is, ahem, not that bad to look at, and it becomes this odd companionship of theirs where they’re not friends or really acquaintances but they’re… there, and they’re constant presences to each other. But unlike their handlers and scientists, they’re not trying to inflict pain on each other. There’s not a lot of talking at first, but more of just glances that get a little longer and more meaningful. Then he sits in on one of her “physicals” and sees the kind of pain they put her through to stretch her limits, and yeah, maybe it’s not as bad as things he goes through, but she’s young and she’s little and kind of frail looking because he knows the food they give the twins is hardly substantial and it makes him feel the most genuinely pissed off he’s felt in decades. So maybe he just… roughs up some Hydra agent a little into feeding her and her brother better, and it’s like she knows, because when some bread rolls that look fresh and smell really good are brought to the twins one day in their meager excuse for a “rec room”, she looks right at him and smiles, small but beautiful, and maybe he smiles too when no one but her is paying attention.
And so that leads to talking. And surprisingly enough, it’s not mostly just her. They go on walks, because she’s allowed to poke her head up in civilization again (again, possibly because he “suggests” it to their handlers). He talks about the bits and pieces he can recall of his past, and how he’s not even sure if those memories are even a little real, but they make him feel human for a little while. She talks about her parents and her childhood and Pietro. Most of their talks are bittersweet, but still nice. Some of them are hard, like the time she asks him why they trust her out on her own, and he has to tell her that there’s no way he’d be able to let her leave, anyway, and she gets sort of quiet and he feels like the shittiest person alive. He’s done some horrible things and nothing can ever make it better, but telling her that her freedom is locked tight in the grip of his metal hand is just about the most horrendous thing he’s capable of.
And she can tell that it bothers him, and she doesn’t try to comfort him because she knows she wouldn’t believe it if someone tried to tell her that she’s not who she thinks she is because of what she’s capable of. So she just shrugs it off and neither of them talk about it again, and that’s that. They’re not really public about their budding…whatever you’d call their relationship in the labs. People expect to see them together, obviously, and yeah, they see that the two of them interact somewhat, but their moments are their precious little secret and they like it that way.
Eventually, though, the twins get better and are more in control, and Bucky isn’t surprised at all when he overhears the scientists discussing that the twins won’t need guards soon. He thinks about formally saying goodbye, but the thought is ridiculous because he doesn’t know any specifics yet, and even if he did, what would he even say? So he doesn’t mention it, and what ends up being their last walk together, it rains, and instead of rushing inside to get out of it, Wanda just tips her head back and closes her eyes and takes a deep breath and smiles a smile unlike anything he’s ever seen. Spreads her arms out and lets herself get soaked in the water, and he doesn’t think he’s ever seen her so carefree, and she twirls and whips her hair around and splashes some rain at him and it’s like a punch to his gut just how young she is, and also how much of a survivor she is. And she looks up at him from under her eyelashes that are dotted in rainwater, her clothes drenched, her hair in wet ringlets and her cheeks rosy from the crisp air. And she doesn’t say anything, but she smiles, and he thinks there are no words at all that could begin to embody this girl.
So, years later, when he’s standing in an airport parking garage and a van pulls up beside them and the door slides open and she hops out, he’s still at a loss for words. She’s a little older now and she’s without a doubt the most beautiful person he’s ever laid his eyes on, and she’s a goddamn angel with her hair blowing in the breeze and the sun sort of peaking out from behind her, and she’s so damn graceful getting out of that van. And she looks up and catches his gaze, and he sees the recognition flash in her eyes, and he knows for damn sure that his stomach has never flipped for someone the way it does for her in this moment as her lips part and she breathes out a shocked, almost relieved rasp of, “James?”
Oh geez. Why the hell would you get me started on that??
