Curious, What’s ur beef with Miguel
Tumblr media
you asked for it. slightly long post ahead i'm so sorry
WARNING: ACROSS THE SPIDERVERSE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
i have spent the last several days ranting and raving about about Spiderverse related things and like. I have such a complicated relationship with this movie, but THAT'S FOR ANOTHER POST IF SOMEONE ASKS LMAO but Miguel. Miguel O'Hara. Miguel.
I HATE HIS HOLOGRAM SUIT WITH NOTHING UNDERNEATH ASSS HE'S SO. WAGHGGHGAGK Like I know a lot of people do like him and there's stuff to like but I just don't see the appeal, and I'm also slightly biased because I can't enter the Spiderverse tag without seeing unfiltered Miguel NSFW LMAO
The first thing I thought after watching the movie was that it felt like he wasn't like... built up to enough? Like, my writer brain never turns off, and from a writing perspective it felt kinda weird. A lot of things in the movie did, but to me it just felt like there wasn't enough intro to him. Like he's supposed to be important but we don't like. i dunno HEJGKHKFL it sort of felt like we were already supposed to know a lot about him. WHICH I GUESS IS FAIR MAYBE THEY EXPECT ACTUAL SPIDER FANS TO COME IN AND KNOW WHO HE IS and I'm only a Spiderverse fan.
Miguel does have really charming and funny moments! Like, in the beginning Gwen section of the movie, he's got pretty funny dialogue while still remaining stern. He's got kind of a flat charm to him. But for me he just. loses it. after that part of the movie. He's a lot more of an asshole, which yes he's supposed to be. But for me there's just not that much to like. and just. and. and
Okay, kiddies, get out of the pool, that was the formal discussion. Now I'm just gonna LOUD
Tumblr media
THIS GUYYYYY. IS SUCH A DUMBASS!!!!! He is so obviously wrong about the entire canon event theory. At least he is mostly. THERE IS SO MUCH EVIDENCE POINTING TO HIM BEING WRONG. AND WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO BACK IT UP??? ONLY ONE PIECE OF EVIDENCE THAT HE EVER BRINGS UP IN THE MOVIE!! And that's when he was Stupid and took the place of himself in a universe where he died so he could be with his daughter! And when you think about it, he didn't necessarily break the canon event rule- That canon event already HAPPENED. He DIED. But I guess you could suggest that him coming back ruined it. But that's the problem; these multiverse rules and regulations and details are just so confusing. And they're supposed to be.
Miguel doesn't necessarily have the right to put himself in charge of protecting this and claiming these things to be true when he absolutely does not know the full scale of the multiverse- Nobody knows exactly how all this works!! And we have seen so many things to contradict him!! If what he says is true, the events of Into The Spiderverse would have absolutely shaken things up. But the everything's fine for the most part, isn't it? The events of that movie changed all the characters in different ways (except for Ham. Ham's ok. Ham didn't change LMAO). Peni's SP//DER bot was destroyed, Noir brought color to his universe in the shape of a rubiks cube, Gwen made a new friend. Peter B was inspired and fixed things with MJ and went onto have a daughter, a DAUGHTER WHO'S VERY EXISTENCE ISN'T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN! AND THAT'S BECAUSE OF MILES! And if what Miguel is saying is true, why is the fact that Miles is Spiderman now and everything he's done not severely messing things up? The 42 spider's corpse is still chilling in his universe, too.
I've seen people compare the Spider Society to like. a cult? And honestly I can see that- Unintentional by Miguel, I'm sure, but it does seem similar. He's gotten everyone to believe in his theory and have them acting upon it, even Gwen, Peter B, and Peni. (Noir and Ham we never saw in the Spider Society, likely because their VA's weren't available. But I also like to take this as like. These two would not join the Spider Society, no way in hell they would. The society is against a lot of what Noir fights for and Ham would see this as a joke LMAO) NOT TO MENTION THAT OH MY GODDD LIKE GWEN KNOWS NOW THAT IF SHE GOES BACK TO HER UNIVERSE, SHE'S GOING TO HAVE TO EXPERIENCE THE CANON EVENT OF HER DAD DYING. AND MIGUEL AND THE OTHERS KNOW THAT TOO. AND THEY THREATEN HER WITH THE IDEA OF GOING HOME. THEY KNOW THAT. LIKE WTF?????
A detail I'm also obsessed with is that in Pavitr's universe, you see the damage and glitching before the Spider Society shows up. They call it a "quantum hole" or something, because that's what they believe it is. That's what it HAS to be, right? It can't be anything else. It has to be damage from the disruption of a canon event. But that is NOT what that is. That deep blackness- That's damage from The Spot. You can even hear it in the music, you can hear Spot's motif. It's probably also glitching because Spot is literally becoming some multidimensional being.
BUT MIGUEL IS SO DUMB AND SO UNLIKEABLE TO ME LIKE HE COULD HAVE AVOIDED THE WHOLE CONFLICT WITH MILES IN THE FIRST PLACE IF HE DIDN'T TELL HIM HIS DAD IS GOING TO DIE!! LIKE HE SCREWED HIMSELF OVER!! Sure, maybe he figured he should know what's going to happen, just accept it and join the club, but like. MAN.
BUT WHAT GETS ME. WHAT GETS ME THE MOST. WHICH MAKES ME ROLL MY EYES HARDER THAN ANYTHING.
"I'm this dimension's one and only Spiderman. Or, at least I was. But I'm not like the others. I don't always like what I have to do. But I know I have to be the one to do it. I've given up too much to stop now."
Tumblr media
OH BOOOHOOOOOOOOO, CRY ME A RIVER. LIKE OH MY GODD. THIS IS LITERALLY ALL THE MOST CLICHE AND GENERIC QUOTES FOR A CHARACTER OF HIS TYPE. LIKE HOW DO YOU TAKE THAT SERIOUSLYYY I'VE HEARD IT ALL BEFORE. OKAY DRAMATIC EDGY MCEDGE I GET IT. I DON'T FEEL BAD FOR YOU!! I HAVE NO REASON TO!!!
I can not WAIT for Beyond The Spiderverse to have Miguel be faced with the fact he's wrong. But he can't face that. Because if he knows he's wrong, he has to face the fact that he's done all of this for nothing. And when people learn the truth, they're likely going to be a bit pissed!!
This came out a little more disorganized and incomprehensible than I wanted, but I think I expelled all my energy yelling about him and stuff in DM's on Discord, so I'm just piecing together all the pieces I left scattered LMAO
Sorry Miguel fans,,,,, you may think he's hot but I do not. This is all just my opinions and thoughts, keep that in mind!!! No hate to anyone who likes him, I know a lot of people do!! I'm just not that big a fan
anyway if anyone wants to hear more of my thoughts on Spiderverse ermmm shoot me more asks :] I enjoy talking

TBOSAS SPOILERS!
I am gonna start by saying that I went into this movie knowing it would not follow the book scene for scene, character for character, and so on. This is not my first book-to-movie adaptation (obviously) so I knew what to expect, time constraints have to be met, of course. That being said, under the cut will be my review with spoilers.
I loved that the first scene of the movie was the Dark Days, it really set the tone for Coryo's POV in my opinion. I also REALLY enjoyed that the movie was split into three parts, but I also feel like they could've done a neater transition.
I am a bit sad we didn't see him disappointed by eating boiled cabbage YET AGAIN lmao, but that is more of just a funny little tidbit I would have enjoyed. My poor Sejanus, my beloved... was treated like the stale piece of bread at the bottom of a bag that everyone throws away. In the books, he was everything that Hope represented as a reader, pointing out the cruelty of the Games, calling out the Capitol and so on... in the movie he is nothing but angry and it never shows his one-sided friendship with Coryo, how he fully trusts him, brings him food his Ma prepared, never even made any significance between how he was LITERALLY feeding Coryo some days. It erased all of his kindness just to show this pent-up rage against the Capitol. I was really looking forward to seeing Clemensia in the hospital, I am not gonna lie. The mutts in the original movies were hardly visible, it isn't really translated that the ones in the first movie look like the tributes, I wanted to see just this one person being a mutt and show the absolute HORROR of what it actually is. I am not even talking about anything CRAZY, just some scales prosthetics and contacts to show how the snakes changed her. It felt very lazy. The cut to Lucy just having a guitar randomly was fucking wild lmfao, like I understand that scene would've been too much of a filler, but it is never even hinted at that Coryo tried to get the guitar. Dr.Gaul was amazing, ngl I did truly love Viola as her. The games themselves were so rushed though? Like, they really wiped everyone out with the snakes lmfao, that was so stupid to me? All of the scenes in D12 were just... so rushed. It seemed like there was no training or anything and he just was out there doing this job randomly as a peacekeeper, like dude did nothing else lmao. Idk, as someone who really enjoyed the book, when I thought I wouldn't, the movie was very lackluster. Not even showing how awful Snow really is by literally living with Sejanus' parents after literally being the reason he was killed is INSANE. Like, I really thought it would capture WHY he became this villain but it's more like... he is mad because his girlfriend left :( idk, it was very lackluster. It has been a few months since I last read the book, I might reread it and update this review in a reblog but.... so many scenes were cut, so many details that while yes were inner monologue in the book could have been some how portrayed in the movie but it wasn't. idk how this movie has such a high rating lmao, it by far the worst one imo.
If you are curious of my THG film ranking I would say from best to worst is MJ 1, CF, MJ 2, THG, and then TBOSAS... like this shit was mediocre at best. If you haven't read the book, then great, you will probably love it. But idk... it was lacking SO much.
I have other thoughts, but I am running on little to no sleep so I cannot think properly, I might add more at another time, but yeah. Mostly I am just upset at the lack of character for Sejanus. Nothing about his death or anything was as heartbreaking as it was in the book.

Jolly's Friday Blog Update - Dec 9th 2022
Nearly forgot about this shit lmao.
What a week. I could really go for some MJ right about now but it's looking like I probably won't be having a green Christmas if you know what I mean.
So let's get down to brass tacks: Writing. I haven't done a lot of it this week, there I admitted it. To say I didn't write at all would be inaccurate, but the most I did was some extremely self-indulgent crap that is not meant for virgin eyes to read. Other than that all I really did was make some minor edits to stuff I've written with a very close friend of mine, and even then I know I could have probably done more. Oh well, there's always the weekend.
I had my first ever CT scan this week. Lately my health has sort of been on the decline, and we're hoping to get some answers soon. The truth is I haven't really been well for a long time now, I've been dealing with varying degrees of stomach trouble since I was at least 10 or 11. You might remember in my Author's Notes on my latest Ao3 story The Greatest, I mentioned how I recently got very very sick and was still not 100% recovered at the time that story got uploaded. I'd say I'm doing a lot better but the reality is I'm still dealing with the same issues I've been dealing with for close to a decade now, I've just gotten to a point where I'm like "This is a normal level of pain for me, therefor I'm perfectly fine". IDK what they'll find on the CT Scan, if they'll find anything at all. I almost hope they do just so I can finally get some damn answers. Whatever happens, I'll say this: I'll be happy if I never have to chug an entire bottle of Barium Sulfate again for the rest of my life.
As far as self-care is concerned, I at least have a decent morning routine in place: Wake up, shower, cook myself breakfast, take a walk around the neighborhood to try to wake myself up. Sure, there's room for improvement; I need to start remembering to brush my teeth everyday before they rot right out of my mouth. Oh also! Last night my mom found this old journal I was using back in 2020 to keep track of everything I ate and drank that day, and what my stomach pain was like. I can't entirely remember why I stopped. I feel like it had something to do with the fact that on some days, I couldn't remember what I ate, or if I even ate anything at all. Or maybe I eventually just couldn't be bothered anymore. Who knows. Bottom line, I'm gonna try to get back into the habit of writing in that journal.
Anyways, on another topic: My best friend and I finally started watching the 3rd and final season of Dead To Me last night, which I have been waiting for for a stupidly long time. If you don't know what Dead To Me is, stop whatever you're currently doing, go on Netflix, and watch it right fucking now. You will not regret it. The fact that it hasn't gotten nearly the level of international recognition that certain other Netflix shows have gotten is a crime and an injustice and I will do everything in my power to rectify this mistake. The basic plot is: Jen Harding is a mother of two that was recently widowed after her husband died in a hit and run. At a grief support group, she ends up meeting Judy Hale, and the two of them form a close bond. But Judy has some skeletons in her closet, and she's not even the only one.
My shitty summary probably doesn't even do the show justice, it's just that good. I can't even go into any real detail without giving away a small fraction of the many twists and turns the story takes. You have to see it to know what I'm talking about. We're about 3 episodes in and I'm just super nervous to see how the whole thing concludes, and I have slight PTSD from the last time I got super hyped over a new season of a show I love to pieces only to be horrifically betrayed... (*cough* *cough* The Promised Neverland *cough* *cough* *cough*)
Anyway that's all I can really think to talk about for now, see y'all on Monday. I'll go ahead and leave you with this screenshot of a funny exchange I had with my best friend last night:

"Like Mockingjay (never start me talking about Mockingjay)."
Now you have to talking more about Mockingjay. What's your problem with MJ? 😎
@curiousnonny
@curiousnonny I feel like my poor followers are tired of my opinion on mj lmao. There must be a ton of posts somewhere under my meta tag but I will sum it up for you. Baring in mind it's been ages since I've reread or seen the movies so my opinion might have chanced in the meantime I guess if I saw it again.
Book wise: I do like the book alright in the sense that I like the themes and the messages and I think it wraps the series up perfectly. However, I also consider Mockingjay to be very poor writing because it's the book when suzanne discovered how limited a first person pov was and it shooooows. We're trapped in Katniss' head when, clearly, we needed more info so we get a scene like Finnick's death - a scene I still consider to be one of the worst writing example of all times by the way - where Katniss suddenly develops telepathy and reads his thoughts. lol. Let's not forget the random and weird decision to substitute Effie for Fulvia and only remember about Effie halfway down the book with a vague mention of "we don't know what happened to her", well okay then. Outside of that, Mockingjay was a strong instalment and I have no other problem with it (at least I don't think).
Now. The movies. *take deep breath. Beg someone to hold me back*
Okay for the positive, thanks to the movie more omniscient perspective, it corrects that whole "first person" problem and we get to see more of the war, we get more context which is great. The cinematography was also very pretty which doesn't hurt. Strictly on an aesthetic point of view the two movies are great - that dam scene will never ever not give me chills.
HOWEVER, they made decisions to change some stuff that still irk me.
Personally, I would rather have Effie rescued with the victors than there from the start because they made her comic relief when she could have been so much more and it annoyed me. Elizabeth's performance is awesome and it's not her fault but we were promised a fish out of water for months and we didn't get that. I love her but we didn't get that.
Strictly linked to Effie's situation we have Thirteen. Thirteen in the books is a military district that borders on police state to rival the Capitol. There are lots of rules and harsh punishment for disobeying those rules, it's a military place where everyone is considered a soldier (and I actually really much liked that part in the books). We see most of that aspect of Thirteen through its interactions with Capitols - in the books the prep team, but also Fulvia when she tosses away a piece of paper and in a lesser impact Plutarch. The key scene to me that clue to Thirteen's true harsh nature is the one with the prep team where Katniss finds them imprisoned in a cell that hints at torture happening behind those door (not to the prep team necessarily but generally: the chains, the drain on the floor etc). It's clear from that scene on that in Thirteen, you follow rules or you get hurt. Now back to the movie: Effie struts around in a modified uniform (how funny haha), doesn't generally follow the rules ("I won't get out of my compartment" how do you eat then? Because they're sure as hell not giving you trays of food), and is very much running her own show. That doesn't keep with book!Thirteen and that annoys me to death.
Now, again, it wasn't difficult to make Effie a fish out of water. You just had to give her the right uniform and make her wear it. The scene with the prep team could have been included with Effie in their place. It would have gone a long way into making Thirteen more book!canon.
Linked to Thirteen is movie!Coin. Look, it was a choice. They made her give Katniss so many pep talks. She was great at the distant evil vibes but she wasn't as frightening as book!Coin and I do love to hate book!Coin. They also changed the final voting on Games scene with her saying she doesn't want a bloodbath and lol. That's exactly what she wanted. So... I guess they tried to make her more human with Snow being the big bad villain and the reveal that she was also not a great person doesn't hit like in the books.
Regarding the pep talks that Coin gives to Katniss all the time. Here's my question: where the fuck was woody when they were filming? Was he high? Was he not on set? How do we go from Haymitch being Katniss' prime caretaker in book!MJ to Haymitch barely talking to her at all in the movies? I love those scenes in MJ where Haymitch's love for her shows, okay. I love that even though they have their tension and Katniss is angry with him because of Peeta, it shows that they care about each other. Haymitch is with her, in her corner, there's no question. In the movies Haymitch is hardly there to be found and he's pretty much comic relief half the time. That's the big reason for my annoyance with the movies I guess. I love Haymitch and we didn't get enough. All his canons scenes were replaced either by Coin or Effie.
Another scene that absolutely guts me in the book is the Finnick's reveal scene. It's just such a twist in the books, such an important reveal and in the movies they made the *stupid* choice of CUTTING IT SO KATNISS CAN HAVE A SKYPE SESSION WITH SNOW. A SKYPE SESSION. WITH SNOW. Nothing more to say about that.
Speaking of Katniss, like I mentioned in the last act, JLaw's performance in those movies is... a choice. Her face is blank all the time, she gives as much emotion as a plank of wood... I don't know I just didn't buy it. But more importantly, she is wolverine. Take a bomb in the face? No problem, she bounces back in five seconds without scars or any physical trauma. Easy peasy.
I also hate the erasure of any sort of trauma. I get it was probably for rating reasons and it's not like it was the first time. Haymitch's alcoholism is pretty much absent (yes we see him drinking in the previous movies, yes it's acknowledged he drinks to excess but we never see any hint of withdrawals and he stops drinking without apparent difficulties outside of a cold, he also stays sober in the last stretch of mj and possibly afterwards as well which is a whole different discussion I already had a few times and that only highlights the differences between book!H and movie!H) and in the same veine, we don't see Katniss getting addicted to morphling, we don't see her becoming suicidal and we don't see her finding herself back through singing - which is very sad actually because there is this whole thread of Katniss and singing woven through all 3 books and we loses a very impactful moment here. Instead we get Katniss shipped back to 12 under one day because why not?
Book!MJ has that for itself that it doesn't shy away from trauma, it shows the bad and the ugly and it also shows the good because there's rebirth. Movie!MJ... Well, we get bad wigs.
I probably forgot some stuff but here it is in a nutshell XD I told you you shouldn't have started me on that topic lmao.

SHOOT i saw you already did mj sooooo snatcher or hattie?
Snatcher:
This might sound like a joke, but literally when I write him, I relisten to the Snatcher voice line compilation so I can get his Voice. That's a big part of the process, honestly, honestly.
More seriously, remembering that he's a showman. His persona is the way to get around having to deal with his problems so he intentionally inflates his own ego to compensate for not being allowed to in the past. He wants to seem scary and powerful and in control, like someone who has the luxury of toying with people and not being emotionally involved in it because being emotionally involved Sux Lmao.
As a parent, has had to make a deliberate choice in terms of embodying one that Hat Kid deserves. In terms of balancing that and his above personality point, a lot of it means being considerate of her feelings when he showboats. He still hams it up and acts corny but now it's to make her laugh. He still threatens to Kill That Guy For You if she's upset, but immediately respects her wishes if she says that's not how she wants the problem to be dealt with. It's really just a refocusing of who he's acting for. Still prideful and dangerous but Hat Kid sits safely within the eye of that hurricane now.
Anxious (TM). Somehow more of the helicopter parent than Moonjumper, which is why the latter sometimes puts him on time out so that his chaotic emotions don't stress Hat Kid out.
Hat Kid: Difficult to come up with these because honestly I struggle to write her
Independent. Didn't have a lot of consistent structure or discipline growing up so had to figure out how to occupy herself in her own way. When she had a problem, was left to deal with it alone most times, so tends to just attack her problems head on with out consulting anyone about the best way to do it. Was trying to defeat Vanessa all by herself the best course of action? No. Was it direct? Yes. Not particularly obedient because that didn't really pay off much. She needs someone to give her a good reason for why she should do something. She listens to what Snatcher and Moonjumper ask her to do because she understands that they worry about her safety and would prefer to be aware of what she gets up to in case things go wrong.
Despite the independent streak, like literally anyone, enjoys being showered with attention and praise. She had to work pretty hard to get her caretakers excited about what she accomplished so has kind of high personal standards about what a kid her age "should" be able to do. She tends to preen a bit when her ideas and accomplishments are met with easy praise from her parents and maybe likes to show off for them a bit sometimes.
Smart! But in a pretty hands-on way. Likes to learn from experience and going headfirst into a problem. Quickly finds book learning and studying boring. In terms of ability, she knows when she's good at something and can be defensive of it even. Lacks more confidence on the social side of things, such as assessing whether people like her or if she is likable. Mu breaking off their friendship and people backstabbing her over the time pieces hurt her feelings quite a bit.
