tbh i have drawn them a couple of times, but i don’t really like their designs in boruto that much. i don’t mind naruto’s shorter hair (buzz cut naruto anyone?) but the way his face is drawn in boruto often looks weird and alien. his outfit is lame and boring, which sucks because his og outfit felt very fun and quirky to me. it fit little naruto so well. this just has no vibe

sasuke is a little better i think, i like his long hair (but i miss the floof) and his outfit is better than naruto’s. a purple vest is very interesting, however, his og outfits were SO cool!! and this doesn’t live up to that. they had the opportunity to go so hard with an adult sasuke design, but they dropped everything. the purple is a good idea, but they completely lost any kind of interesting shape or texture. no skirt, no swishy shirt, no interesting necklines, no contrasts… it doesn’t evoke his family or orochimaru or itachi or naruto or sasuke’s mood or mindset the way any of his original outfits did, but it doesn’t even have the “going into wilderness and living separate from my identity” vibe the poncho did. the boruto outfit is just “vaguely fancy guy who might be a ninja, maybe”.

overall: i think naruto and sasuke’s original outfits had a very strong texture feel and shape that conveyed information about the characters. it made the world feel more realistic. in contrast, their outfits in boruto look like they could be made out of very cheap halloween costume material, and they look like they were designed by someone who doesn’t know the characters very well. it’s like a guy was handed sticky notes that said “naruto: orange. sasuke: purple and stylish” and had 20 minutes to come up with something

Ranma 1/2 Reboot 01x09 - I'll Never Let Go

Here we go with more of the ice skating arc. Fuck these people up, Ranma and Akane.

Modern dubbing has gotten really good. I have my beefs with some modern dubs, like the way Spy x Family translates Anya's comical gaaaaaaan shock noises into just... generic gasps with no funny sound whatsoever. But they're a lot better than they were in my day.

Sometimes I'll flip over to the dub when watching something just because I'm curious how the dub team for this specific piece handled something.

For this bit, the joke is that Ranma called him 慢性発情男 Mansei Hatsujou Otoko, which sounds kinda-sorta similar to Sanzenin Mikado and means "Chronically Horny Man". Or "chronic horndog" as the subs translated, which is accurate but doesn't sound anything like his name.

The dub opted for "McHorny Sex Pest" as a kinda-sorta for Mikado Sanzenin, and that's perfect. Chef's kiss.

This man is so gross. He already forced himself on Ranma and now he's going to use their competition today as an opportunity to force himself on Akane.

I kind of want him to die. I am so glad he does not get to stick around and join the cast full-time.

That is easily the best photo of Ryoga that he has ever had taken of him in his life.

A kolkhoz is a type of Soviet farming co-op. I'm not sure why this was chosen for the name of Azusa and Mikado's school.

Do not attempt complex figure skating maneuvers without proper training. I need y'all to understand how many places Akane's skates could have ended up just now after Ranma slipped. This maneuver was way too complex for him.

Okay but felt though. When I was her age, I was exactly this sore of a winner. I hate that this character speaks to me as much as she does.

Seriously though. Fuck her personally but she is so goddamn cool.

How can you not wish you were this cool? But, y'know, with better taste in partners. And... also better lifestyle choices. This is why people adore villains. Because villains have style.

Mikado does this so often in competitions that it's considered a signature move for him. I hate that. I hate him. Ranma, stab him with your footsy knives.

See, what Mikado doesn't know about Akane is that she is basically Furinkan's #1 expert on guarding yourself from pests like him. For her, this is Tuesday.

(Should have put a little more force on it. Ice skates have blades but they aren't ultra-sharp. It takes pressure to cut. Don't worry, Akane, we all make mistakes.)

I love how even Azusa gets in on the karmic steamroll that Mikado's earned for himself.

These two are way too invested in breaking up couples.

Narratively, the purpose this serves is a pretty on-the-nose test of Ranma and Akane's budding relationship. Writers do this with canonships all the time. "Once you swallow this pill you will die a gruesome death unless your feelings for your designated love interest are TRUE!"

This certainly explains Mikado having a signature kissing move.

But it's crazy that these two, whose relationship with each other seems entirely platonic, have made it a point of pride to destroy other people's relationships.

Azusa has shown zero interest in Ranma up to this point. Her thing is losing her cool about cute things. She and Ranma have barely said two words to one another.

But then she's like, "Oh, we're doing a Matchbreak? I'm on it!"

Like. It's not enough for Mikado to be a sex pest and for Azusa to be a cutesy kleptomaniac. They have a vendetta against romance. These two are My Little Pony villains. Who hurt you both?

An interesting detail of the Goodbye Whirl is that Azusa's connection to Ranma is the bond that breaks.

It would have been easy to set up Mikado and Azusa as a high-skill but low-chemistry partnership for Ranma and Akane to overcome through superior trust in one another. But Mikado and Azusa click very well. They both reflect one another's flaws and they have a fantastic level of teamwork, experience, and cooperation.

They didn't become masters of a cooperative sport by being islands.

So it isn't Ranma and Akane's connection that breaks, despite that being the intent of the Goodbye Whirl.

And it also isn't Mikado and Azusa's connection that breaks, because their bond is just as strong if not stronger than Ranma and Akane's.

It's the connection between the two pairs. Ranma and Akane are an iron-forged bond, and Mikado and Azusa are an iron-forged bond, but never the two shall meet.

Ranma and Akane don't outlast Mikado and Azusa. But they do implicitly outlast every couple that the pair have matchbroken in the past. The impulsive and self-indulgent Azusa getting tired, ceasing to care about this, and letting go is the weak point of this technique. But it's a weak point nobody's ever held on long enough to discover before.

There are a lot of words in Japanese that can be translated to the English catch-all "monster". The one here is け化け物 bakemono, which is a shapeshifting occult spirit that impersonates people or objects. It literally translates to "Thing that Changes Shapes".

So, literally, this line translates. Azusa is saying that no human would have survived that, and only a bakemono impersonating human form could still be alive now. "Only a monster would survive that."

But. In context, knowing Japanese, I need y'all to understand how funny this is. Azusa claims that only a bakemono could have survived that, and then Ranma wakes up.

Ranma is a person, not a bakemono. But. I mean... He and P-chan kinda are. They are Shapeshifting Things, which impersonate other kinds of being.

That's not why he survived. He survived because he's been doing Anime Warrior Training for his whole life. But she's not wrong.

And then Akane got unceremoniously ejected from the Couples Duel. Now that her role as Primary Love Interest has been firmly reinforced, she is of no further value to this fight scene. It's time for the boys to take over. Great.

Oh well. At least she got to do that cool flip-kick.

This is not a fakeout, either. Much like when Ranma stole her match with Kodachi from her, Akane will no longer be directly participating in this fight from this point forward.

That cool flip-kick was Akane's one and only contribution to this entire confrontation. Other than that, she's been tossed around by Ranma a couple times, survived the Goodbye Whirl because Ranma wouldn't let go even though she wanted to, and now she's fired so we can have more Ranma and Ryoga shenanigans.

It was the one flip-kick and that's it. That's all she gets. She defended herself from the predator like she said she could last episode, and now she's done. She has no further value that she can add to this fight.

Like, they even made a big fuss over how injured Ranma is. Ranma is so badly hurt that it... inexplicably warrants benching Akane? She has to leave because of his injuries.

Ranma wants to keep Akane from dueling with Ryoga and Akane wants Ranma benched because he's injured, so the compromise they come up with is that the injured Ranma will duel with Ryoga.

Like. I get that Ranma and Akane can't go out there together like this because heteronormativity, gotta have a M/F partnership, all that jazz. But if Ranma's injuries aren't going to be a problem then they can just excuse themselves for a moment, hot water Ranma in the back room, and get back to Ranma and Akane dueling.

I mean. Hell, they could probably get away with doing it right out here. Azusa's already pegged Ryoga as Charlotte and requires no explanation for how that's possible.

She doesn't even know about Jusenkyo curses and she accepts this without question.

There is absolutely no reason why Akane would need to retire from the rink right now and I'm kinda mad about it, especially right after the Kodachi thing.

This is why people think she's boring. This is what makes her the most divisive character in the series, with a fandom either loving or hating her with no middle ground. Akane is an interesting and relatable character, but she isn't allowed to do things. Even when it makes absolutely no sense to suddenly banish her from her own storyline like this.

I honestly think Takahashi just couldn't think of a good way for Ranma and Akane to win this fight. The match has thoroughly been established to be too heavily skewed against them for them to prevail. Last episode/chapters established that they'd take this in a street fight, no contest. But this episode/chapters establishes that their skills just aren't enough to overcome the disadvantage of the ice rink.

So... bye, Akane, I guess. Enter Ryoga and the Ryoga-esque complications that will form the answer to this unwinnable fight. Now we get the absolute shenanigans of this episode's back half, as well as the arc's final chapters that will form the next episode. For which Akane will be nearby cheering for her boys.

One day they will make a 3D Zelda with hair that doesn't mildly bug me.

I love Zelda, I love so many aspects of her character designs. She's such a cool character. But her hair consistently breaks my immersion in a way that many other characters just don't, so I am compiling a silly little list.

My credentials for this are the fact that I am a person with long hair who dabbles in hairstyling and I like doing my hair with braids and ribbons. I am also in theater, and purveyor of historical hairstyles.

This is a very unserious and rambling rant, so please bear with me! No shade and no harm meant. This is me having fun.

Alright, down to business.

CATEGORY 1: NO BUT SERIOUSLY, HOW THICK IS YOUR HAIR? OFFENDERS: BOTW/TOTK Zelda

That is a thicccc braid she's got there, but she simultaneously has long flowing hair (botw) that would need to be incorporated into the braid, OR her hair is shoulder length (totk) and you cannot physically make a braid that looks like that with hair that short. ALSO, the braid is very thick, starting from the crown of the head, while not incorporating any hair around it?

It looks like a fake braid headband (which is, I believe, what most cosplayers end up using). If you reeeally wanted to give her a headband, you could use a circlet or a ribbon.

Which brings me to...

CATEGORY 2: PHYSICS DEFYING RIBBONS OFFENDERS: SS Zelda and TP Zelda

I really do not understand this design choice at all. Ribbons are used to style hair in the real world all the time, but the only way I can conceivably see these ribbons staying in her hair is if they're made of velcro, or they're sticky. Either way, sounds painful. (Cosplayers how do you pull this off? I'm assuming glue?) Now, hair wrapping using string, ribbon or fabric is a common practice in many parts of the world, but you need strong tension, a full wrap around the hair, and these wraps usually begin at the scalp. An artist friend said that this was likely a way of getting around having to render braids. Which, fine, I am not an artist, but then why not just have those two locks of hair falling forward like normal? All you need to do is delete the ribbons. And if you insist on having that splash of colour, maybe you could give her some earrings or something?

CATEGORY 3: THE DE-BUTCHIFICATION OFFENDERS: OOT Zelda, Tetra

So I have no issues with the respective hair of any of these characters. My qualm is the immediacy of the transition, and the resulting sudden new length. Because I guess Zelda has to be super femme and that means she has to have long flowing locks when she transforms out of her pirate outfit/masculine sheikah disguise, so no more short hair for you! (Also, you can't be cute and femme and have melanin, apparently?? But that's a whole other issue...)

(And despite my beef with the overly chonky braids, I must give kudos to totk Zelda for righting this injustice. #shorthairzeldarights)

HONOURABLE MENTION: I REFUSE TO BELIEVE YOU CAN FIGHT IN THESE CONDITIONS OFFENDER: AOC Impa

I just had to include this, because I otherwise love the design for Impa in AOC, but the way I feel about this hair is similar to how most of tumblr feels about boob plate armor. You mean to tell me that this highly trained, stealth and combat expert fighter would wear her hair this long and this loose, when she is often in melee situations where someone grabbing and pulling your hair could absolutely be deadly?? Nah. (She also suffers from the same "how is your hair so thicccc??" issue as AoC/BotW Zelda)

Anyways that concludes my very silly rant. I will again add the disclaimer that I know dick all about character design, I just know how to style my thigh length hair with ribbons and braids. If you disagree, or you have any that I missed, I welcome your thoughts!

Marchae: But it's also a video and they often don't match at all with the lyrics So you have to juxtaposing messages 1. An audio representation and a visual one

Kris: Well we do know that TV likes to make murder (and violence against women in general) sexy, so maybe we're approaching the vicinity of The HBO Problem

Marchae: Just me spit balling while I walk I'm gonna sit so I can focus

Miri: Right, I’m going mostly on the visuals. It seems to be set up that KP is being commodified, and then she’s actually fighting back against it! But her fight back perpetuates the same issues, just on other people

Marchae: Which is the problem out culture has in general

Kris: But are the lyrics and video complicating and enriching each other? Or are they in an unproductive conflict with each other? I am also not a Music Video Expert

Miri: I would argue that they’re mostly in unproductive conflict Or this video actually doesn’t have something to say, and it just enjoyed going on a little ride as if it did Which is fine, I guess

Miri: But it’s a weird and extreme concept That is touching on so much but I don’t think really wanting to explore it Did we like this video? And did we like this song?

Kris: I also don't think people assume Katy Perry is always and entirely a fun-but-insubstantial artist, though, and once you've campaigned for HRC I think people will expect some level of wokeness from you, right?

Miri: I would think so

Kris: And then there's the layer of KP vs TSwift, which I am again not super equipped to explore

Miri: And I expect a certain level of wokeness from any adult human Yeah, I don’t think we have the space or knowledge for that beef I will admit to having a preference for TSwift. I am not without bias

Kris: Right I think at least on a first read that's what's happening here, but just from a distance I do find it hard to believe that Perry hasn't grown a little ("that" = commodifying other women)

Miri: But within the twist there’s still sexy murder! This is a sticking point for me Perhaps that’s just a production design failure?

Kris: It seems like a gesture of "don't worry, I know what I'm doing here" Maybe

Miri: We’re so used to seeing sexy corpses on crime shows that’s how we expect murder to be shot

Kris: Also it's a failure that a lot of Prestige TV has and I guess I have a lower bar for music videos

Miri: And it is a pop music video, full gruesomeness in never going to be on the menu

Kris: Fairly or not But I guess what we keep coming back to is that the lyrics that are the starting point are pretty straightforwardly Sexy Funtimes

Miri: I do like the triumphant, semi sadistic smile  when the turn happens, because I have a weakness for women showing negative emotions in media

Marchae: @miri nope not at all- just saying it happens and I think she *could be* attempting to illustrate that. More saying look at what we're doing - we are killing each other here

Miri: Hmmmm. I also wonder how the fact that this is clearly entrapment plays into it all KP and her chefs have organized a sexy cannibalism sting here

Kris: Which is a logline that I don't hate

Marchae: The video definitely compliments the lyrics

Miri: Right, but the song pretty much presents that as a good and sexy thing, right?

Marchae: I think though that these are all objects Menus and buffets are all thinks that we look at and say oh that looks good I want some

Miri: I guess the video could be an exploration of the fact that that kind of language is seen as sexy with no issues is actually pretty weird

Marchae: So on the surface it's sexy hot I wanna booty pop to it (not really) But when you think about it it is all about how as women we look at other women and say she's beautiful "I want to be her" or are jealous envious

Miri: I realize I’m probably asking a lot of this video and could probably just calm down. But they opened the door by touching on these themes and I have so many questions

Marchae: And men are objectifying her

Kris: Men also have voices in this song though

Marchae: I dont mind it as much when I consider it's about the pontification of people and the glutenous (SP) this culture has for women and food

Kris: That don't seem to be in conflict with KP's

Miri: Both good points The Migos part seems appreciative and continuing in the vein of the lyrics, without escalating at all

Marchae: So in my opinion it's more of her winking saying I know what's really going on...

Miri: And in the video they’re clearly on KP’s side

Kris: I do see room for the lyrics to be given a second meaning by the video

Miri: You’re winning me over here I still think the video doesn’t quite have the grasp I’d like it to on its themes, but I am intrigued I also like that after such care has gone into the food presentation up to that point, the person pie KP is about to eat is very messy looking

Marchae: As a consumer of music as generally independent of their visual presentation - no. As an intellect who thinks about these things yes.

Miri: But I think it matters. Because it’s another layer of the meaning--if someone is trying to be feminist and they fail utterly that says a lot about how deeply sexism is ingrained in our society (not saying that’s what’s happening here! just an easy example)

Marchae: But here is how I'm considering it This was not a visual album a la Beyonces lemonade which was meant to be viewed and listened independently or together and tell a cohesive story

Marchae: So I did KP say hey here's my point maybe. Maybe not

Miri: But it is still a piece of culture

Kris: I think what I'm asking is 1) do we think we're "overthinking" a specific Katy Perry video, 1a) is Perry in general an artist whose work goes deep enough to invite at least a little overthinking

Marchae: But we know Beyoncé definitely did

Kris: And 2) if we ARE overthinking it, is that fine and fair?

Marchae: I think we'd have to explore more than one video and chronicle her career 

Kris: Because of where this slots into a larger context of objectification/commodification imagery?

In other words, no decision has been made yet where specifically the wall will run which obviously will control which properties are to be taken in that 140 mile stretch.

Already noises are coming out of Washington that the wall is being held up because of the reluctance of owners to sell. Not true. Cannot be true. If the majority of properties to be taken for example in Texas have not yet been designated, those owners are not saying no to the government. They have not even been approached since no determination has been made if their property will be needed.

The government makes an offer. Generally, the government low balls the offer. Hoping to purchase the property cheaply. Assume the homeowner is reluctant to sell for any reason. The government can obtain a court order rather swiftly permitting the government to acquire title.

The home owner goes to court. The homeowner is required to show that the amount offered is insufficient. Not based on fair market value.

A trial can be long. All kinds of real estate experts testifying. Thorough cross examinations detailed.

In my experience, I have never seen a property owner come out of such a court fight with less than that the government offered. Always more. In most cases, significantly more.

The cry oh the poor homeowner will be required to assume heavy legal costs. No way. At least not out of pocket. Attorneys generally take these cases on a contingency basis. Twenty five or thirty three percent of the difference between the offer and what a court has determined as fair value.
