Ancestors of K-beauty - 8090s edition
The 5 beauty trend queens :
- of the 80s :
Oh Hyun-kyung - the fact that shes the most prolific Miss Korea winner - 1989 - says it all. Plus that lip commercial? Iconic. The MiKos were the beauty trendsetters of the 80s and the industry literally set the "Jin" as the standard of make up the next few years.
Hwang Shin-hye - homegirl ain't called Computer Beauty for nothing! The only person who actually embodied both the 80s and 90s at the same time. She had naturally arched eyebrows and those heart shaped lips that later became a thing.
Lee Ji-yeon - the originator of the innocent concept and image in the pop music industry, which is the entire k-beauty aesthetic now. Give her the credit. See through bangs, no makeup makeup, thick straight eyebrows, skincare, thin lips.
Kim Wan-sun - when people talk about a 80s diva, they mean her.
Jang Yoon-jeong - Miss Universe contestant in 1988 and a big part of the 80s look - plump lips and cheeks, an obnoxious curl in the forehead, big hair, red lipstick, purple eyeshadow...
Honourable mentions : Lee Mi-yeon for being the absolute innocent cutiepieeee
1990s :
Lee Young-ae : Her 1992 Mamonde Lip commercial literally turned the beauty world upside down. She was the embodiment of the strong, city, career woman that was the image women wanted to be , in those few seconds. Dark red lipstick, short shoulder length hair, pant suit, iconic. Literally influenced the industry for the next 7 years or so.
Kim Hye-soo : She embodied the "career woman" image since the beginning and always had a more mature persona, and especially her dark and matte eye looks as well as her super arched eyebrows were to die for.
Kim Hee-sun : Trendy hairstyle queen - she got the strand highlights, the low ponytail, the hairband and so many other big trends out there. Plus her lips were always dark and we love it.
Ha Soo-bin : the k-manhwa aesthetic in one human, was super popular despite the strong career unnie image being prevalent. It was her shocking popularity that the above trend faded and more natural, innocent makeup following Soobin's appearance became the aesthetic.
Lee Seung-yeon : Miss Korea second runner up, had a pretty illustrious career plus super iconic Smokey eye look. Alao popularised perma curls and headbands after her role in "Cinderella"

From what people have said, it’s a mix of culture and context: (under cut cos not here to start flame wars)
Nostalgia: a lot of Chinese fans came to know her through iconic kdramas growing up and people hold on to good childhood memories. Their impression of her tends to be from those dramas, so they think she’s innocent and hardworking, and they don’t hear about the gossip and pap photos that Korean fans have been seeing.
Publicity reps: I think the main reason is SJK doesn’t have a publicity rep in China while SHK employed one since 2010, and they've kept a very firm hold over her public image. This also means whatever they dump online is unlikely to get retaliation from SJK regardless of truthfulness while they can’t do the same in Korean media. Also, there’s a term in Chinese called “buying a trending headline” which refers to publicity reps paying social media sites to get a headline to the top of trending list. Given some of the weird and long wording of her headlines, a lot of people suspect it's paid publicity (e.g. SJK didn't make headlines when an ice skater said he knew SJK from the sport cos he was in the nationals, SHK made headlines for being "an ice skater" but it turned out she just enrolled in a class). It’s a very common tactic, so she’s not worse than any other celebrity for using it, but it means her popularity is probably inflated in China, while this tactic also ensures she stays in the public consciousness.
PR tactics: prior to her marriage, they played up her desirability with male costars (but not because she's proactive! She's just that appealing!) even though multiple male costars have come out to deny viral reports they had any romantic feelings for her, or that they didn't at the time the news went public (likely released by her own PR team). Even on the eve of her marriage they made up news about her ex Hyun Bin being in tears cos of her marriage (like really? The girl's getting married and the PR team still wants to squeeze some publicity from the ex?). And since her divorce, they've been playing up the victim angle at every opportunity - SJK/his family were "emotionally abusive", SJK took advantage of her fame, SJK tried to make himself look innocent in the ordeal, SJK still trying to get back at her. She's so! Innocent! Just! A working woman! Being taken advantage of! By an abusive ex!
Misplaced sympathy: A lot of Chinese fans latch onto her tragic origin story as a child of a single mother. And, to be honest she deserves respect as someone who came from difficult circumstances and worked hard to get where she is now. But that doesn't absolve her from all the dodgy stuff she's done, and it certainly doesn't automatically guarantee her victimhood.
Social media control: around the timing of the divorce, a lot of rumours online (in Korea) about her owning property in Hong Kong (with the suggestion she's got financial support from someone there), but all of it disappeared overnight to the point Korean netizens were posting "what's with the ban on SHK and Hong Kong house?" A lot of the negative stuff she's done in China (professionalism problems) also got suppressed on social media.
Cultural differences: her reputation took a nose dive after the tax evasion scandal. A lot of Chinese (and probably even western) fans shrug it off as “she didn’t know what was going on and she paid it back” but it was a comparatively large sum and Korean celebrities have dealt with worse public image fallouts from less. Korean media also reported in 2014 that there was clear intent in the tax evasion (she was reporting large expenditures without records). Meanwhile tax evasion with Chinese celebrities seem to be a commonly recurring theme in the news so a lot of Chinese netizens don’t see the significance.
Song-Song divorce
This is just a record for myself because there's so much negativity flying around Chinese sites and so many false rumours.
If you do want to reblog, DO NOT TAG THIS WITH SHK
Normally I’m not interested in why people get married or divorced. Private relationships is always difficult to explain. No one has to be “at fault” for things to not work. Both SJK and SHK are assertive, competent adults who had appeared genuinely happy with each other’s company, and both have stayed very private about the relationship (and the end of it), which should be respected.
But Chinese sites are overwhelmingly weird about SHK. Article just about SJK are normal, but when anything to do SHK comes up, SJK always gets dragged in the mud alongside weird praise for SHK. For example, ever since Reborn Rich ended, the headlines doing the rounds are: "SHK violently puts ex-husband in place with new drama" "SHK claims revenge over SJK with better script" (umm neither of them are responsible for the script) "SJK tries to ruin ex-wife's drama by publicising his relationship" (what) "SJK acknowledging his new partner means he's a heartless liar cos he divorced SHK only! 3! years! ago!" (dafuq?) Meanwhile, SJK news does appear under SHK's name but they never come with negativity about her.
The criticism against SJK always revolve around the same few old issues - SJK was a dick for initiating the divorce, he was the one at fault but decided to jump in early so it looks like she was at fault, SJK married her to advance his own career, SJK got special favours from PHG etc.
Korea's divorce laws: there are two types of divorce - by agreement, which still has to go through family court, or a judicial divorce.
The judicial divorce (which was what SJK filed) is fault-based, i.e. there's no provision for a judicial divorce if there is no major fault in the marriage (and it defines faults as adultery, desertation, maltreatment or "other serious causes"). The law is intended to protect faultless parties from an unwanted divorce (e.g. in situations where the husband has a mistress, it protects the wife and kids from losing their financial support). Most cases go to settlement rather than a hearing if both parties are in agreement, which is what happened here. If there is no agreement, then evidence needs to be presented as to why a divorce was filed. Hence, customarily, it is filed by the faultless party because their case can be dismissed if the other party doesn't want a divorce. No burden of fault is required for an agreed divorce.
One argument is SJK filing the divorce doesn't necessarily mean he's faultless. The assumption is SHK was the one who brought up the divorce but he filed it first to make it look like he was the innocent party. But, the fact that they went to a judicial divorce meant that one of the parties did not agree with a divorce. If SJK was in the wrong and SHK wanted the divorce, it makes no sense for SJK to file a judicial divorce (i.e. signalling intent to divorce) rather than go the family court route (which avoids a whole lot of negative publicity for himself). If SJK was in the wrong and SHK didn't want a divorce, it would be difficult for SJK to have the right evidence to for the court to rule in his favour. It is still possible that both parties were in the wrong.
According to an exclusive report by "Channel A" (a nationwide TV channel who often makes exclusive reports on major celebrity run-ins with the law e.g. drugs, fraud, investigations), SJK submitted the petition for divorce to court first, and then informed SHK via legal reps the next day. In the same Channel A report, "a friend of SJK" said he chose to not request payout for psychological injury because he wanted to end the marriage swiftly. The "friend" also said, "this is also to warn SHK that if she spreads any lies 'about their marriage life and reason for divorce', he will publicise everything".
What's interesting here is that Channel A is not a minor gossip magazine. What is said here is going to have significant injurious impact on SHK's reputation, especially since she is a female public figure. If he was at fault he would have no grounds to request payout. SHK's reps filed multiple defamation claims against ordinary netizens posting theories about the divorce, but they did not confront a major TV channel on this claim, nor did they contest SJK's petition in court.
Reports of SHK being the party who first brought up divorce but SJK rushed ahead to announce it before her; reports of SJK having an affair with a makeup artist; reports of SHK being sad and losing weight:
These claims all came from a single reporter Kim Youngho (?) who was arrested in September 2021 for fabricating false rumours/stories about many celebrities. He has had a long and close relationship with SHK.
(Chinese) Media and SHK fans deliberately misconstruing events after the divorce went through:
Both parties agreed to the divorce during the judicial process, and so the court was not obliged to publicise who was at fault: deliberately misconstrued as SHK was deemed not at fault by the court, therefore SJK was deceitful to announce it before her
SJK going by judicial channels for divorce and making a subtle warning via a proper TV media channel: misconstrued as SJK is unethical and making a huge deal out of the divorce
SJK not making any further public statements on the divorce after it was processed: misconstrued as he's feeling too guilty to speak
SJK's father making an apology for disturbing family and the public: misconstrued as an apology to SHK
Incessant smear campaign of SJK's supposed relationship with former (impeached) PM Park Geun-Hye
Allegation that SJK divorced SHK because he heard PGH was leaving jail: she was released from jail at the end of 2021 due to health reasons, the divorce happened in mid 2019.
Notably, SJK had a good working relationship with PGH's successor Moon Jae-In. MJI has a long personal vendetta with PGH, who had led a witchhunt against MJI's mentor Roh Moon-hyun. RMH would eventually commit suicide under the intense pressure. It is highly unlikely that if SJK had any real unprofessional links to PGH that MJI would give him so much respect and spotlight.
SJK's marriage to SHK was for her reputation/money:
SJK was already a popular and critically well-received actor before he took a break for military service.
He chose to marry when he had just had a resurgence to his popularity and idols/actors always lose fans when they marry. While SHK is one of the most popular actresses for dramas, she's not without controversy. Marriage was as much a risk to his career as it is a benefit.
SJK's family is relatively well off. His dad owns an entire commercial building, and their family had enough to pay for top education for all three kids, including for SJK's sister to study in Canada and then return to Korea for a medical degree.
SJK has multiple expensive properties under his own name and had no qualms about knocking down their wedding home - this isn’t someone pinched for money.
Weird anti-SJK and pro-SHK articles flooding Chinese entertainment news sites (like youtube, yahoo and 163) and occasional Korean sites:
In late June, Sina published an article saying SJK had made a statement in an interview that SHK did not cheat on him, and the news attracted a fresh volley of criticisms against him. This interview did not actually exist. The closest interview was that someone who allegedly knows SJK said SHK cheated on SJK with Park Bo Gum, then someone representing SJK denied this rumour and denied that the first person was an acquaintance of SJK.
Korean articles saying "Chinese people are saying 'why do we not have a SHK'" and Chinese netizens being like "dafuq why would we say this".
Chinese social media not being interested in PGH's rumour when it originally made news in 2016, but has been flogging this dead horse non stop after the divorce.
Chinese media sites taking as gospel the reports from the reporter arrested for making up stories and ignoring reports from official media channels like Channel A
There are a lot of real (not rumours) negative stuff about SHK's actions over the years which I won't post here (*) because the idea isn't to start a flame war. But it looks like she's signed up with a major publicity company in China to manage her public image, and their tactic is to continue using SJK's popularity to boost hers (because, notably, this tactic is not used elsewhere - for example if you search up SJK's name in English, Japanese or Korean, you rarely see her picture; but when you search it up in Chinese, her picture and name are all over his news). Which is utterly stupid because from what I'm hearing, The Glory is a well-made show on its own (that scriptwriter alone is a guarantee), and SHK's team shouldn't need to drag down SJK to prove herself professionally, just as SJK's Vincenzo and Reborn Rich promotions hadn't needed to drag SHK down either.
(*) If you can read Chinese they're an eyeopening read: Why is SHK popular despite being arrogant SHK's bad history The divorce
