Tirupati Diaries Part I

I wanted to visit Tirupati because the South Indians consider Balaji as a really powerful God. I had already seen his might when I visited the Visa Balaji Temple in Hyderabad and flew overseas immediately after that. Then again, not everyone who visits there flies. It's all about your beliefs and if you really are seeking something, give it a positive vibe by visiting this shrine.

I made this plan with my mom and two of her friends. We traveled to Tirupati by air and checked in to our hotel on Thursday night. We were staying in two interconnected rooms which was convenient and a lot of fun. We took the local bus from the APSRTC bus stand for Tirumala around 10 in the morning since our Darshan reporting time was 12 PM. The bus started circling up the hill and we'd kept the windows open. There wasn't any nauseating feeling for me at least. We were stopped for Security Check at the start of the hill.

On reaching Tirumala, we discovered that it's another city altogether. There are Vintage buses to take you around the city for free. We took a Jeep which dropped us at the main temple entrance for 200 bucks. At the entrance, you need to provide your IDs along with the tickets for entry into the temple. The shoes and mobile phones need to be submitted at the reception. The queues consisted of all kinds of people pushing their way ahead. The way to the temple is the build up for something grand. Water is sprinkled on the floor and wet mats are laid out to protect your feet from the heat. You will find devotees chanting Govinda Govinda on the way. The darshan time is very short and one has to be very attentive to observe and grasp as much as one can in those few seconds. The security doesn't even approve of people waiting and paying their respect. They will send you out immediately.

The way back to the belongings can be a bit of a pain in summers. Try and walk on the white painted pathways to avoid burns. They served free Laddoos to all the visitors. You can collect takeaway Laddoos as per the booking. These Laddoos are massive and around 160-180 grams each. There are separate queues for collecting the Laddoo polybags and the Laddoos. Also, you will find photographers approaching you for clicking pictures. Do not fall into their trap because they do not print good quality photos.

We were exhausted after this activity and I had to have one Tata Gluco+ in Orange flavor, from one of the nearby shops. Butter milk was also available there. From there, we went to Matrusri Tharigonda Vengamamba Nithyannadana Bhawan. You can remove your footwear right outside the building. No one stole our footwear. The building is huge, multi-storied, and can house thousands of people dining together. They served free lunch on Banana leaves. There was absolutely no waiting time. With that we ended our main darshan and it was time to explore the rest of the city.

After my Faluknuma escapades, I decided to take a cheap accommodation near the centre of the town close to Charminar. I hired a local auto for Rs 1,000 a day and asked the cameraman to be my guide around the many bylanes of the city. The Charminar area reminded me of Chandni Chowk and Jama Masjid areas of Delhi. I stood below the lights of the Charminar and captured its beauty at night panning through its streets and biryani shops most selling beef biryani and chicken shawarma. A shop called Roshan became my favourite as I munched on a shawarma and a biryani. Then it was off to the sugarcane shop to have some juice. Finally, I traded off to the Munna Pan shop to enjoy the pan. All the while, I had my autowala as my guide and he held the camera bag most of the time. The whole night I meandered through Hyderabad but the glee and dazzle of Charminar stayed with me through the night. It was time to enjoy some local mutton with naan back in my hotel room that I had taken for a mere Rs 2500 through OYO rooms.

I had to book a flight to Tirupati to visit the Balaji Shrine and MakeMyTrip was the best place to do that. At around Rs 2800, one can get a direct flight to Tirupati and it takes only one hour to get to the city of Balaji. They say it is the richest temple in the world. The inner sanctum is made of gold. One has to take a ticket before one is allowed to see the shrine and the tickets are available from the local bus stop only after 12 pm at night.
