Warring Kingdoms
Whips of fire. Shards of ice and water. Arcs of lighting and thunder. Cobbles of earth and stone. These things were orbiting Indigenous magical human, magical human and homo magi hybrid Lysander/Luciana as he/she/they walked towards the enemy bastion. Lysander/Luciana Norwood an archmage known during the war as a very dangerous war mage and a very talented battle wizard. A dark elf asked, “What exactly are you Lysander Norwood?” The prince of the Human Federation and Homo Magi replied, “A battle wizard and a war mage.” “I served in the last war against the Legion or the Horde as a magic user.” Homo magi and human half breed Lysander Norwood and Blood Elf Liadrel Grandstrider they have also sold their services by serving in the armed forces as battle mages using a rapier in one hand and a wand in the other on the battlefield. Generally when people think of the term wizard they think of someone who is not physically powerful but relies on magic to make up for that liability. Typically when people think of a warrior they think of a brawny person low on brains who smashes everything that gets in the way. A battle wizard welcomes both of these features using them as the circumstances need. These battle wizards are skilled in combat while they use powerful magic as well. They Lsyander and Liadrel Grandstrider are also war mages. A war mage is a unique class of spell caster. They are one who has discovered powerful magical secrets and trained enthusiastically. In combat the real supremacy of the war mage emerges. For them who have mastered the art of joining power and magic into one lethal ability one that allows them to match or even defeat both fighters and spell casters or even people who are both like the paladin in single combat. Since the dawn of humanity when our ancestors first revealed the killing power of rock and bone, bullet, & steel blood has been spilled in the name of everything from gods, to achieve power and authority, to get vengeance and retribution, to achieve justice and integrity, money and wealth, to simple psychotic fury and wrath. It was only a matter of time before magic was first useful to the battlefield. The first war mages were little more than experts in conjuring, transfiguration, transmutation, & evocation. The second generation of war mages found that a firmly focused method to magical conflict produced better results and it was from their labors that the contemporary war mage exists. Battle magic is about pushing magic to its fundamental and supreme devastating confines. That means turning each esoteric expression into a death sentence and every open palm motion into a fatal magical attack. This application allows war mages to produce spells in styles others can only stare at in skepticism. From helixes of strength that leave distorted flesh in their wake. To thrashing arcs that shatter bone and armor like fragile dirt. To the unrestrained devastation of overwhelming calamity battle magic is all about being triumphant at war. There are those who seek to master the skill of magic and there are those who seek to master the art of warfare and the war mage seeks to master both with breathtaking results. With weapon in hand and esoteric magic at their sway opponents tremble and flee from these battle mages. These battle mages are arcane spell casters who live for the commotion of fighting and scream of agony and particularly the epic obliteration created by war. The more functional spells of wizards, sorcerers, warlocks, arch mages, & witches have little significance to war mages. For war mages favor utility over form and are disciplined only in spells most practical for smiting enemies, spreading disorder, and screening allies. A war mage cares only for triumph in combat frequently as part of an army or in the smaller series of operations favored by adventuring parties. The huge bulk of war mages are alumnae of exceptional esoteric military academies. These academies are not for the faint of heart for they follow a demanding course of study more akin to boot camp than a wizardly apprenticeship. Throughout the training they are taught to wear combat armor and power armor while casting spells that are frequently of a far advanced level than the battle mage can really cast. The training drills the spells of war into their memory thus allowing them to prepare and cast spells of combat without needing a spell book or other equipment. For adventuring parties a war mage provides one thing and that is brute firepower. Not just any firepower. We are talking about military grade firepower in a person. Battle mages sharpen their ability and talents through feats not study so devoid of extended use of their powers they cannot become truly lethal. This is why Liadrel and Lysander are so dangerous as former battle wizards and war mages. Lysander and Liadrel let loose their full power as their magic caused their skin, veins, eyes, palms, hair, & mouth to blaze cobalt and cherry. They were levitated off the ground with their own telekinesis. They then attacked with magical blasts, magical optic blasts, & magical energy breaths to kill enemy soldiers. They then used their telekinesis to crush and pulverize the officers who were still inside their combat armor and power armor causing them to explode with their blood gushing and guts cascading outside of the armor. The blood and guts of the enemy soldiers now covered the helmets of their power armor and combat armor.

Video Game Review: Assassin’s Creed Unity (Ubisoft, 2014)
Genres: action-adventure, third person, open world
Premise: Blaming himself for the death of his adoptive father, Frenchman Arno Dorian joins the Assassins during the French Revolution in order to seek redemption. Learning that his adoptive father was a Templar Grandmaster looking to promote peace between the Templars and Assassins, and that his birth father was an Assassin (killed by Shay in Rogue), Arno must investigate the Grandmaster’s death and contend with a changing Templar Order, while also sorting out his romantic feelings for Elise, the Grandmaster’s daughter. In the present, the Assassins contact the unnamed Absergo employee and recruit them to their cause, using Arno’s memories to find the body of a sage, which may contain traces of First Civilization DNA.
Platform Played On: PC (Windows)
Rating: 3/5 stars
***Full review under the cut.***
I am evaluating this game based on four key aspects: story, characters, gameplay, and visuals. I will also be evaluating the Dead Kings DLC.
Content Warnings: violence, blood, body horror
Story: Assassin’s Creed Unity primarily follows Arno Dorian, an Assassin operating during the French Revolution in 18th century Paris. Following the death of his biological father, Arno is adopted by Templar Grand Master de Laserre, who keeps Arno in the dark about the Templar-Assassin conflict. Thirteen years later, de Laserre is murdered following Arno’s failure to deliver a message in time. Arno joins the Assassins to seek redemption and learns that de Laserre was trying to make peace between the Assassins and Templars, but many did not share his vision. Arno must therefore track down de Laserre’s murderer with the help of his Assassin mentor, Pierre, and Elise, de Laserre’s daughter with whom Arno is in love.
There were several elements to the main story I liked: the idea of star-crossed lovers dropped in the middle of a murder mystery during the French Revolution was intriguing, and I liked that the crux of the conflict was a reigniting of the centuries-old Assassin-Templar conflict. However, none of the “crumbs” of the mystery felt particularly engaging; Arno would track down figures which were introduced then eliminated, and even the bigger characters (Robespierre, Germain, etc) didn’t have enough charisma to carry the plot forward. Given the premise, I would have liked to see more emphasis placed on Arno’s emotional journey, since his guilt and romantic turmoil seemed to be more fruitful areas to explore than the larger mystery. I would have liked to see more flashbacks to his memories with his adopted father (like Edward’s flashbacks in Black Flag) to make the mystery feel more personal, and I would have also liked to see more tension between Arno’s Assassin loyalties and Elise’s Templar leanings. The closest we got, in my opinion, to some satisfying interiority were some ghostly figures whenever Arno visited Versailles (good, but infrequent) and a really nice trippy sequence when Arno first joins the Assassins.
I also think this plot felt different from the previous Assassin’s Creed games because there wasn’t a lot of focus on the First Civilization. Arno encounters a Sage - a figure we were introduced to in Black Flag - but there isn’t a lot of focus on First Civilization artifacts or power. It’s not an unwelcome change, but it was different.
The French Revolution was a wonderful choice for a historical backdrop, though I wish Ubisoft had done more (narratively) to make Arno feel entangled with the world. As the game stands, the French Revolution feels more like a set piece - the background is there, and Arno interacts with some historical figures, but the plot itself doesn’t necessarily need to be set during the French Revolution. I would have liked to see the setting be integrated into the main plot more, perhaps by having the Assassins and Templars be more involved with historical events.
The present-day plot which usually serves as the frame in Assassins Creed games is almost non-existent, which made it feel like a distraction rather than an integral part of the story. Most of the modern stuff was just voice-over, with an anonymous Assassin guiding the faceless and voiceless “Initiate” to comb through Arno’s memories in search of a Sage. Periodically, the voice would alert the Initiate that Abstergo was onto them, and the player would have to take Arno through a series of rifts which featured anachronistic obstacles. Personally, I found these parts more annoying than anything, and they didn’t really come together to form a plot of their own, like in previous installments.
The Dead Kings plot was pretty basic. Arno was tasked with finding a manuscript in exchange for passage out of the city. Along the way, he discovers that Napoleon Bonaparte’s subordinate is trying to find an artifact of the First Civilization, which is hidden in a temple under the church. There wasn’t a lot to set this plot apart - it did the job, and I enjoyed myself, but it wasn’t particularly memorable.
Overall, I think Unity’s plot is mainly hurt by its open world setting. The world is so expansive and full of stuff that it detracts from the main narrative; because players can pick up or put down the mystery of de Laserre’s death, it’s easy to forget about it, making it feel less consequential (or, at least, not very urgent).
Characters: Arno Dorian, the PC character, is a charming protagonist with a lot of likeable qualities. He isn’t really a fan of how the Parisian Assassins are more like a cult than a brotherhood, and he’s witty and sassy while also holding onto admirable ideals. I wish Ubisoft had given him a better plot, though I did like that they didn’t overwhelm him with grief and guilt to the point where he was broody. He mostly had a light outlook on life without downplaying the seriousness of the conflicts around him, which made him a fun character to control.
Elise, Arno’s love interest, had a lot of potential. She was independent and highly competent, and I liked that Ubisoft didn’t make her into someone in need of saving. I wish she and Arno got to work more together and that they had had more scenes where they talked about their pasts, but I guess that would have been too sappy for the target audience. Without spoiling anything, I do have mixed feelings about how her story ended. On the one hand, I think it demonstrated a real character flaw that Elise struggled with throughout the game (I like characters to have actual flaws); on the other hand, she didn’t deserve that.
Other characters were a mixed bag. Pierre, Arno’s mentor, was pretty gruff and grumpy, and I didn’t get the sense that the two were particularly close. I wish more was done to cultivate that relationship, especially given Pierre’s arc. Other Assassins were too uptight to be interesting, and the bad guys weren’t charismatic enough to be intriguing. I did like the Marquis de Sade, but that’s because he’s Extra in fun ways. Leon, a child thief in Dead Kings, was also fun, mainly because he played off Arno well.
Gameplay: Unity differs a bit from its predecessors. While the core doesn’t change - players still need to use a combination of stealth and combat to navigate an open world and achieve goals - Unity introduces skill trees and upgradable weapons/equipment. To improve Arno’s abilities, weapons, and gear, players must collect money, earn “Creed points” (awarded for doing impressive things like ledge assassinations or perfect parries), and gain “sync points” (awarded for completing missions). In addition to collecting money from chests, Arno can upgrade his base at the Cafe Theatre to gain a steady income, though there aren’t any widespread economic mechanics, such as the forts/strongholds in Assassin’s Creed 2 or Black Flag/Rogue.
Unity also infamously introduces “helix credits,” a type of currency that players can acquire by paying real, out-of-game money for. Helix credits unlock abilities and upgrades faster (or else just access exclusive content from the online store). I hate this concept just based on principle, so I spent a lot of time exploring the map and unlocking every chest until I built up enough money to purchase legendary equipment.
Weapons themselves were easy to pick up and use, with familiar things such as the hidden blade, one-handed swords, two-handed weapons, pistols, berserk darts, smoke bombs, poison gas bombs, and the like. New weapons included the phantom blade (a silent projectile), the guillotine gun (a gun/blade hybrid gained in Dead Kings), and the introduction of long-arms (such as halberds). I found most of these weapons easy to use, though I did have to get used to the fact that the hidden blade is not selectable as a primary weapon - Arno uses it automatically when doing a stealth kill, but draws his sword or other weapon whenever the player engages in combat.
In terms of movement and stealth, I liked that Arno’s animations were more inspired by real parkour, but I did find it harder to move precisely in this game for whatever reason. I often got stuck on a ledge or wasn’t able to change direction very fast, all of which caused me to fail missions or get killed fairly quickly. I also didn’t like that Ubisoft removed the ability to whistle and draw enemies to a hiding spot; while there were haystacks and structures to hide behind or in, enemies wouldn’t walk by them very often, making them difficult to use for ambushes or stealth kills.
Side quests/activities included a range of things, from “Paris Stories” (quirky missions where Arno had to go kill someone or steal something), to Murder Mysteries (in which Arno had to search for clues and arrest the correct culprit to achieve unique weapons and armor), to “Nostradamus Enigmas” (riddles which led to different landmarks and rewarded Arno with keys to the legendary armor beneath his base). I personally found these fun, even if a lot of them weren’t memorable. They did their job and provided some entertaining little narratives, so I can’t complain too much.
Unity also introduces a lot of coop multiplayer missions, which can be completed with other players or on your own. Players can form or join “social clubs,” which are mainly just teams of gamers, or search the internet and complete missions with strangers. While I liked that the coop missions were able to be completed alone (they were harder, but not impossible) and I was able to play some missions with a friend, I did not like that most of them required players to replay them 3 times in order to get all collectibles and rewards. For a completist, the coop missions will be repetitive, and at times frustrating if there’s a locked door you can’t access without upgrading your skills.
In terms of collectibles, Unity primarily has money chests, cockades (which unlock color schemes for Arno’s outfits), newspapers, artifacts, and nomad points (which can be used in the companion app). Other than the money, I didn’t find the collectibles very rewarding - I didn’t have the companion app, and I didn’t much care for new color schemes or armor/equipment.
Dead Kings introduces tricorns as collectibles while also inserting a few “Franciade Stories,” Murder Mysteries, and “Suger Enigmas,” all of which resemble their counterparts in the base game. The enigmas in Dead Kings were a bit harder than those in the base game because the answers weren’t necessarily in or around landmarks; players have to really pay attention to the map instead of relying on the database for historical clues. I also found it annoying that players could get accidentally stuck in Dead Kings; if you start the DLC unintentionally, you can’t return to the base game until after you complete the first mission. It really sucks if you’re underpowered or just want to experience the narratives in order.
Visuals: Unity is a visually stunning game, with a lot of beautifully-rendered environments, character designs, and the like. The streets of Paris feel like they are inundated with chaos, with crowds of shouting people moving past walls papered with posters and defaced by graffiti, while the interiors are detailed according to the social class of the inhabitants. Arno can wander into a poor person’s home, empty save for the basics, or a rich person’s, decorated with gold and elegant paneling. I very much enjoyed exploring the world and seeing landmarks such as Notre Dame overlooking a rich, vibrant world.
I also really liked Arno’s outfits, all of which captured an 18th century aesthetic. Arno can wear a number of coats, hoods, pants, belts, and bracers, all of which feature a blue, white, and red color scheme by default. I liked that the color scheme wasn’t based around white, as in previous games, as it made Arno feel more part of his world.
In terms of animation, Unity is really buggy, even years after release. Characters would float in the air or get stuck in odd places, but even so, I didn’t find it difficult to complete the game. I did really like that Arno’s combat animations were inspired by fencing, and his kills were fluid and elegant, almost like a dance.
Final Verdict: Although Assassin’s Creed Unity attempts to bring a new kind of gameplay to the franchise and includes some charming protagonists, the difficult controls, lack of engaging plot, and introduction of microtransactions make it merely an average installment in the series.

All-Glitch Pokemon Blue Run Pt13: Fossils of the Future
June,
I am terribly grateful that you’re still all right after encountering all those glitch trainers. Judging by your notes, it was an extremely trying experience. This does seem to confirm my beliefs, in the very least, that there is something special about you. You seem to possess a certain resiliance and resistance against the effects of glitching, enough that you merely black out and wake up later, typically none the worse for wear. Still, you musn’t start to believe you are invincible. I ask that you still exercise caution in your experiments and exploration.
I must also thank you for your detailed notes about all of the glitch trainers you encountered. These observations will prove invaluable to my work, I feel. June, I was a little nervous when you first started out as my assistant, but you have proven that you are not only talented with glitches but that you possess the adventuresome spirit and eye for detail that are the marks of a true scientist. I’m very proud.
I hope that you enjoy your day of rest. When you’re finished, we have more work to do. It’s about time you come to meet me in person at my lab. After your return to Fuscia City, you won’t be far. At the moment, my colleagues and I have been working on a new method of researching glitch pokemon. It involves injecting glitch pokemon DNA into fossils and then reviving the fossils. It’s very cutting-edge, and I’d like you to help me in the Cinnabar Island lab.
Looking forward to finally meeting,
-Professor Gingko
---
Professor,
I’m glad my notes are gonna help you out! And I’m happy I’ve been of help. Honestly, I wasn’t sure about this whole thing either, but . . . it’s been really interesting looking into all this glitch stuff. I dunno what it is, exactly, but it fascinates me. And the glitch pokemon . . . the more I work with them, the more attached I get to them. They’re so strange and alien, but also so familiar, in a way. They kind of remind me of bug pokemon. They’re weird and wild, but they’re also so cool and loveable.
Uh, anyway. I thought I’d let you know how my trip to Saffron went.
One of the top places to go for tourists in Saffron is the Silph Company, that massive corporate building that loves to give tours to trainers. Show off all the pokeball production and latest tech gadgets. I planned on doing that, but unfortunately I ran into a little trouble. The entire building was crawling with those ‘Team Rocket’ creeps.
It was kind of a slog beating all the guys who kept wanting a piece of me-- put a dampener on the fun of looking around. To make matters worse, I then ran into Professor Oak’s freaking grandson once again. He was determined to beat me in a fight.
Thing is, his levels were pretty high compared to mine, and I was nervous. He started with a Pidgeot, a full level 37 by now. Dusty had been my lead pokemon, but I switched to Fractal. I admit this was just to distract Pidgeot so I could then safely bring in Wobbles, my powerhouse with a great ice move. That’s not a strategy I love using, but we were in a desperate situation.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work. Pidgeot outsped Wobbles anyway, and took him out in one hit.
I put in Giago to try and have a go with her, but Pidgeot fights dirty and after a little bit was kicking sand in Gia’s face. So I swapped out again and tried Dusty once more. And you know what? I never should have doubted Dusty. She got a lucky freeze and kept pelting away with Ice Beams until the Pidgeot went down.
Gia was able to handle the Growlithe, and Dusty took out the Exeggcute-- barely, but she did. Charmed got to see her first taste of battle and slashed the Kadabra to death. Finally came Blastoise, which was a whopping level 40.
I was worried. Giago’s weak to Special attacks, and Wobbles was already fainted. I did as much damage as I could with Charmed, then after going down to Hydro Pumps, I finished it off with Giago.
It was a close battle. Very close. But we pulled through, and I think I learned some things, especially losing Wobbles so early in the match. Wobbles is my ace, my powerhouse, and the one to usually protect us all when we’re outclassed in a battle. But Wobbles goes down to physical attacks in an instant if he happens to be outsped or doesn’t kill right away. When that happened, I thought for sure we were toast. But we weren’t. Giago and Dusty did a lot of work to save us.
It was a true team effort, too. Giago has immense defense and HP and is the wall of the team, but her Special makes even her frail to powerful Special attackers. Charmed was important to have around to take the Special attackers on. Dusty helped make up for Gia’s weakness as well, somehow taking out a Pidgeot and an Exggecute, despite having some rather low stats. Seperate, they may not have made it, but together they managed to snatch victory.
After that battle, finishing off the Team Rocket thugs was a breeze. At the top floor I found some dude who claimed to be the leader of the group. He was being obnoxous, so I battled him and forced him to leave. The president of the Silph Company was grateful for that, and he gave me a free pokeball!
After that, I decided to visit the local gyms during the rest of my free time. I figured I may as well.
After some shopping and relaxing, I finished out my day in Saffron. Overall, not bad. But I’m eager to see your lab at Cinnabar Island. I’m on my way to Fuscia now, to take out Koga at his gym. That’ll give me the clearance I need to Surf around here. Then I can head over to Cinnabar.
I’ll let you know when I arrive!
-June
---
June,
Excellent. I’m glad you’re bonding so well with your glitchmon, and I’m glad you’re on your way now. Allow me to ellaborate a little on the fossil conversion process we’ve developed here.
The process partly involves something you have already done in the past. Recall when you handled that glitchmon #C6 with the Superglitch move? Yes. You will be repeating those steps, although this time, your C6 should know Double Slap, not Mega Kick. The easiest method is to simply capture another C6 for the task.
Once you’ve initiated the controlled Superglitch corruption, according to the steps you learned previously, meet me here at my lab. Give me the Helix fossil you collected previously. You will then do some swapping with a pokemon in your expanded party-- the 33rd pokeball, to be exact. I will take this 33rd pokemon and use its DNA to splice with the Helix fossil, and we can revive a glitched pokemon as a result.
Be sure to return the 33rd pokemon to its proper place when finished and then repeat the steps you followed last time for ‘cleaning up’ after controlled Superglitch corruption.
-Professor Gingko
---
Professor,
It was wonderful to finally meet you face-to-face! The lab was nicer then I imagined. A little small, but still fascinating. I enjoy the ocean breeze and the atmopshere of Cinnabar Island, too. It’s the perfect place to study pokemon.
Your lab assistant is a little hard to understand, but I get the feeling he doesn’t get out much. Anyway, I have the glitchmon we revived, #C9, and I’m trying him out in battle now. Sometimes he blends in with the scenary if there’s a lot of rocks around, but he screeches a lot so I usually can find him that way. He’s been an energetic fellow, so I can’t wait to see what he can do!

A Brief History of Gregor Mendel
I learned recently that Gregor Mendel – who was born 196 years ago Friday – wanted to be what I am: a teacher.
The poor guy tried. Took the qualifying exam twice, and failed both times. (He kept botching the section on “natural history.” Cue Alanis Morissette.) So he put in a few years as a substitute, and eventually left the job behind to focus on his true calling of gardening.
Well… that, and revolutionizing biology.
From 1856 to 1863, Mendel labored in a 120-by-20-foot patch of soil to undertake a prolonged study of pea plants. In thousands of painstaking experiments, he bred the plants together: dusting one’s pollen upon another’s stigma with a camel-hair pencil, handling his “children” (as he called them) with exquisite care.
Mendel had identified seven easy-to-measure traits: the seeds’ shape, the color of their coating, the position of the flowers, and so on. By charting these traits across the generations, he sought to understand the patterns of inheritance. His findings, recorded by hand in two-penny notebooks, went something like this.
Begin with two pure-breed strains of plants: one with smooth, “round or roundish” seeds; the other with seeds that are “irregularly angular and deeply wrinkled.” When kept apart, each type produces more of its own: round yielding round, wrinkled yielding wrinkled. Generation after generation, nothing changes. Then along comes Mendel to breed them together.
The result? All of the offspring, down to the very last plant, exhibit round seeds.
As Mendel notes, there are no “transitional forms” whatsoever. No resulting seeds are kinda-round-but-kinda-wrinkled. Instead, in every experiment Mendel ran, the progeny resembled “one of the parental forms so closely that the other either escapes observation completely or cannot be detected with certainty.” It’s as if the wrinkled trait has vanished entirely, dominated by the round form.
Weird enough. But it gets even weirder when Mendel breeds these round-seeded hybrids together. In the new generation, the wrinkled seeds reemerge—but in smaller proportion. The round seeds now outnumber them by a ratio of 3 to 1.
It wasn’t just seed shape. Mendel found this 3-to-1 ratio cropping up in every experiment:
Trait First Generation Ratio in the Second Generation Seed shape: Round vs. wrinkled 100% Round 2.96 to 1 Seed color: Yellow vs. green 100% Yellow 3.01 to 1 Seed-coat color White vs. gray-brown 100% Gray-brown 3.15 to 1 Pod shape: Inflated vs. constricted 100% Inflated 2.94 to 1 Pod color: Yellow vs. green 100% Green 2.82 to 1 Flower position: Spread out vs. bunched 100% Spread out 3.14 to 1 Stem length: Tall vs. short 100% Tall 2.84 to 1
The puzzle was profound. How could the secondary trait disappear, only to come back a generation later? The wrinkled seed, the constricted pod, the bunched-up flowers—these traits must somehow lie dormant in the first-generation seeds, a form of latent potential, information retained but not acted upon. Such results made no sense if a single factor determined each quality. This prompted Mendel’s first powerful insight.
Each trait must be determined by two factors.
What those “factors” were, Mendel didn’t yet know. (It would be decades before the word “gene” emerged.) Whatever they are, Mendel said, let’s give them names: “A” for the round-seed factor, and “a” for the wrinkled seed. Now, if each plant has duplicate factors, then the pure-breeds will be “AA” and “aa.” When bred together, the offspring receives one factor from each parent, for a combination of “Aa.”
But this does not result in a mingled, transitional state. The hybridity, the conflict between the two instructions, is all on the interior. Outside, roundness dominates, and the plant is visually indistinguishable from the round pure-breed.
What happens when two hybrids are bred together, “Aa” with “Aa”? Then, assuming the offspring receives one factor from each parent, four combinations are possible: “AA,” “Aa,” “aA,” and “aa.
The first three will have round seeds, while the last will have wrinkled ones. That explains the characteristic 3-to-1 ratio that Mendel observed.
Perhaps this all strikes you as a big inferential leap, like claiming to know a poker player’s entire hand from their opening wager. Sure, the two-factor structure explains the observed data, but is that enough? Every good scientific theory makes testable predictions. What predictions does Mendel make, and do they prove true?
Here’s one: take a look at those round-seed offspring from the two hybrid parents. Although indistinguishable on the outside, Mendel’s theory implies that one-third of them are “AA” (restored to their original unmixed state) while two-thirds are “Aa” (hybrids like their parents). The former should have only round-seeded offspring, while the latter should yield progeny in the familiar 3-to-1 ratio. And indeed, when Mendel took his camel-hair pencil and his otherworldly patience to this question, this is exactly what he found.
I don’t know what it’s like to be a visionary scientist unjustly ignored in your own time, but it sounds lonely. I’d rather be a mediocre scientist unjustly celebrated in my time. Alas, nobody gave Gregor Mendel that choice: the founding father of genetics died in 1884 having never heard the word “genetics” (coined in 1905).
And that means he never witnessed, nor could have imagined, the sequence of discoveries soon to unfold:
1889—Scientists first document the separation of chromosomes during cell division. These mysterious black structures appear just before a cell splits, line up down the center of the nucleus, and then migrate to opposite poles. Intriguing, but so far inexplicable.
1903—A hypothesis emerges: Perhaps chromosomes carry the factors of inheritance that Mendel identified?
1910—The hypothesis is verified. Genes reside on chromosomes.
1913—The first chromosomal map is drawn. Genes appear to be located in a consistent linear sequence on a chromosome, like chapters in a book.
1920s-1930s—Not much progress. Everyone too busy developing harebrained eugenicist theories and/or jazz chops.
1941—It finally becomes clear what genes do: provide instructions for building proteins.
1944—Genes are made of DNA.
1953—DNA takes the shape of a gorgeous double helix.
This Mendel-spurred series of increments and revelations has delivered us into a bizarre sci-fi reality. Our species can now convert ancient mysteries (the nature of family, the patterns of inheritance, the connections between parent and child) into concrete scientific questions. We are like newly sentient robots, poking around in our programming. So much of the individuality, complexity, and richness of humanity can be traced back to our 48 chromosomes.
Oops—did I say 48? Sorry, we were just getting there:
1955—An Indonesian biologist notices that the historically accepted number of human chromosomes (24 pairs, for a total of 48) had stemmed from a careless counting error. The actual number is 23 pairs, for a total of 46.
(If you’ve ever tried to take a roll call of 11-year-olds, it won’t surprise you that the hardest part of unlocking the secrets of the genome is getting an accurate head count.)
Gregor Mendel, deemed unqualified to teach a high school biology class, settled for conducting experiments now taught in every biology class in the world.

These ARE the Droids You’re Looking For
As the only Treehouse staffer with “Product Marketing Writer” for a title, I find myself typing up a lot of stuff—marketing copy, Nintendo Direct scripts, game-trailer scripts, and other hopefully cool things about our games, which makes thirteen-year-old me extremely happy. Actually, it gets thirty-year-old me pretty pumped too, but one thing that thirty-year-old me rarely gets to do is write AS ME. Well, that all changed after I played as (read: fell in love with) the tag-team ARMS fighters Byte & Barq. When I heard we were writing up some ARMS character profiles for this here blog, I simply had to throw some love to the robotic beach patrolman, Byte, and his mechanical “good boy,” Barq.
Who needs models running in slowmo when you can have these two saving your beach bum?
At first, I was pretty torn up about who I’d be calling my “main.” Twintelle certainly grabbed my attention with her sweet mask and actual, ya know, HUMAN arms… Kid Cobra has the whole snake thing going for him… And I’m all about masterful mummies finding their lost families. For these reasons and more, I almost passed up ol’ Byte & Barq. First off, I’m way too much of a hippie (not to be confused with hipster) to feel comfortable in the role of a literally soulless robo po po, just busting fools’ chops because my programming said so, and I’m not really into the idea of ganging up on someone in an otherwise fair fight. Isn’t that cheating? I think so. Or, at least, I thought so. But I was wrong. Dead wrong. You see, Byte & Barq aren’t ganging up on anyone. They’re practically one fighter because, dude, they complete each other. Not to mention, I’ve been in desperate need of some blue-robot action in my gaming life these days.
Good boy, Barq!
After taking these guys for a quite literal spin, I quickly realized that this tag team is actually a well-balanced addition to the roster. Of the starting ARMS, I went with the Bubb on my left arm and the Seekie on my right. The Bubb is a standard Glove Type ARM that dishes out 90 damage per uncharged hit, which is quite a lot for its speed. And the Seekie is an electric Curve Type ARM with homing functionality. It isn’t 100% effective at tracking opponents, but it often comes in handy when Byte is trying to catch up with a fast opponent. The fiery Multi-Shot ARM called the Cracker is another solid option too. But of all the weapons in Byte’s arsenal, the most useful has got to be his canine partner, Barq.
I should point out that Barq is definitely more of a bulldog than he is a bulldozer, better used as a distraction than as a destroyer. Your opponent can take him down with just one hit, but this dog won’t go to heaven; he’ll respawn after five seconds or so. That means he can block around 15 hits per match or maybe more, but you can’t control where he goes, so he’s a bit unreliable as a “living” shield, especially if your opponent has a curving weapon that can simply arc around him. You also can’t control when Barq punches, so it’s important to watch his movements and try to read him, but don’t worry about him too much. He only deals 30 damage per hit, and while every bit counts, it’s ultimately up to his adoring robot master to pull out the win. As Byte, you can use one of Barq’s punches to chain into a series of punch combos, or as soon as Barq’s punch lands, you can chain right into a grab.
Do Doggy-Droids Dream of Electric Cats?
Barq’s unpredictable nature could be perceived as a negative, but c’mon, where’s the fun in that? Think of it this way: if you get better at predicting Barq than your opponent, you have the advantage. For instance, let’s say Barq is shifting left and right in front of you. The opponent may expect you to use him as a footstool and spring into the air. Instead, you purposefully miss your landing so that the opponent aims wrong, and instead you use Barq as a shield and go for a grab. There are tons of ways to mix it up and keep your rivals guessing. You can also join forces by using the duo’s super move, combining into a man-bot/dog-bot hybrid that opens up some interesting maneuvers. For one, it not only revives your pooped pup, it also temporarily removes him from the fight, changing up the way you fight while allowing you to focus on just one fighter.
Ancient Egyptians foretold the coming of Getyoselfaheadmutt.
It seems like a lot of folks are planning to “main” Helix for his trolling capabilities, but I greatly encourage you to shift your focus to my boys in blue, Byte & Barq. It’s intensely satisfying to watch opponents waste their time on Barq, only to be crushed by an unexpected move from Byte. It adds a feeling of comradery to 1-on-1 matches that you simply cannot experience with any other character in the game. It’s a feeling only Byte & Barq players will ever know in this game, like a long, stretchy fist-bump straight to your heartstrings.

These are the 10 best mattresses you can buy online
Some of the best mattresses are available online — and come in a box. (Photo: Getty Images)
A good night’s sleep is the ultimate luxury, and the right mattress can make or break those blissful hours of peace.
If it’s time to replace your mattress, consider finding your perfect match online. Whether you’re looking for plush or firm, foam or coils, you can find some of the highest-quality mattresses online for a fraction of the price of a typical in-store option. The best part of online mattress shopping? Most brands offer free delivery and a generous trial period. And if it doesn’t ship to your doorstep in a convenient box, your mattress arrives via complimentary white-glove delivery. Either way, online mattress shopping is a total game-changer.
We did the legwork to find some of the best options available to suit your mattress needs. Below, shop some of the best mattresses available online, right now.
Best universally-loved mattress: Leesa
Leesa mattress, from $595 (Photo: Leesa)
Leesa gives shoppers the option between its popular multilayer foam mattress and a luxury hybrid. Both get high praise from around the web and the brand donates one mattress for every 10 sold. If you’re on the fence about buying a mattress online, you can check out both models at your local West Elm store.
Both beds adapt to all body types and sleeping styles, and feature a cooling top layer. With over 13,000 5-star reviews, it’s easy to see why Leesa is a bestseller. “Set up was extremely easy, just unroll and walk away. I was hesitant the first night to try this new mattress as I have a very severe back complaint,” said a 5-star reviewer. “My seized back is what wakes me in the morning. I have to literally crawl sideways out of bed. Imagine how surprised I was when I woke the next morning with no pain. I quite literally jumped out of bed, much to the shock of my husband. I have yet to be awakened because of a sore back … For me, it has saved my back.”
The craftsmanship: Leesa mattresses are made in the U.S. and both styles feature a top cooling foam layer and 2-inch contouring memory foam layer right underneath. With the foam mattress, you’ll get a 6-inch foam base and with the Sapira, a spring core of over 1,000 individually wrapped coils.

Best innerspring mattress: Parachute
Parachute mattress, from $1,299 (Photo: Parachute)
Whether you’re a side, back or stomach sleeper, the Parachute mattress is made with ergonomic coil zones for optimal spinal alignment. Translation? The medium-firm bed will give you a comfortable night’s sleep no matter what.
It has five times the coils of a standard mattress: The top and bottom third of the mattress have soft coils that allow shoulders and feet to sink in while providing pressure-point relief. The firmer, midsection coils reinforce the hip and back, and the microcoils line the top for ultimate comfort. “Love the Parachute springs. Never going back to foam,” wrote one reviewer. “Just upgraded from a foam mattress to the Parachute spring mattress and am beyond happy,” wrote another.
The craftsmanship: The foam-free mattresses are made to order domestically by fourth-generation manufacturers using sustainable materials. New Zealand wool insulator pads make up the bottom and midlayers; the outermost cover is made from 100 percent organic cotton; and the coils are made of tempered steel.
Delivery: Parachute offers complimentary white-glove delivery within 7 to 10 business days. It’ll not only set up your new mattress, but it will also remove and safely dispose of your old one at no cost.
Return policy: If you don’t love it within the 90-day trial period, Parachute will pick up the mattress for free and provide a full refund.
Price: The mattress starts at $1,299 for a twin or twin XL and goes up to $2,199 for king or California king. Each mattress also comes with a 10-year warranty.

Nectar is so confident you’ll love its mattress, the brand offers a crazy-good 365-night trial (more on that, below). With a top layer of quilted memory foam to stimulate airflow and medium firmness, this mattress is ideal for any sleeper. “Bye bye back pain!” wrote a reviewer who claims her husband has had back pain for 10 years. “I have never slept this comfortably while pregnant!” she added.
The craftsmanship: The five-layer mattress is made with a breathable base layer and dense memory foam layer that provides a stable foundation. The top-three tiers are made up of cooling and contouring gel memory foam, quilted gel memory foam for increased air circulation, and a Tencel cooling cover that wicks away heat while you sleep.
Delivery: Your Nectar mattress comes straight to your door in a protective carrier with handles for easy maneuvering and unrolling.
Return policy: Nectar offers an unprecedented 365-night trial. If you’re not 100 percent happy within a year, you can get a full refund and Nectar will pick up the mattress for free.

Best mattress for athletes: Bear
Bear mattress, from $540 (Photo: Bear)
If you want to wake up recovered, energized and ready for a workout, consider a mattress from Bear. The popular 10-inch foam version is engineered with four layers to cool, contour and provide all-night comfort and pressure relief. The 14-inch hybrid boasts five layers, one of which is made up of coils. The main selling point for both is the Celliant smart yarn technology, which is clinically proven to give you a better night’s sleep (more on that, below).
“My wife and I love our new mattress,” wrote a verified foam mattress buyer. “We are both gym junkies and we feel much more well rested and less sore when we wake up versus our old spring style mattress.” Another, who opted for the hybrid, wrote, “I’m a law enforcement officer and spine fusion patient with multiple surgeries on my lumbar spine. This bed is perfect, I’m so blessed to have found Bear!”
The craftsmanship: Bear uses graphite-gel infused foams and a proprietary quick-response foam to cool and align your body. The surface of the mattress is made of clinically proven Celliant fabric, which activates the body’s natural heat and reflects it as infrared energy to reduce inflammation. Celliant has also been proven to enhance tissue oxygen levels and athletic performance, making it perfect for anyone with an active lifestyle. All Bear products are made in America.
Delivery: Shipping is free for the lower 48 states via FedEx within four to seven business days.
Return policy: Bear offers a 100-night trial period and free pick up along with a full refund if you’re not completely satisfied.

Best customized mattress: Helix
Helix mattress, from $600 (Photo: Helix)
After extensive research, the folks at Helix developed a mattress-matching algorithm to give shoppers a customized shopping experience. Using a sleep quiz, Helix determines your support and pressure relief needs and combines that data with comfort preferences to match you with one of nine mattresses. There’s also a plus-size mattress and dual-sided options for couples. The result is less back pain, more deep sleep.
“My wife thought I was crazy ordering a new mattress online, without trying it out first. We did the ‘mattress profile’ quiz and purchased the recommended one from Helix,” wrote a happy buyer of the popular Helix Midnight version. “Guess what? We love it, and my morning back pain is no longer!”
The craftsmanship: All Helix mattresses are handmade in the U.S. Using a combination of memory foam, individually wrapped coils and Helix Dynamic Foam (a special latex-foam hybrid alternative), each model is designed to suit your needs. Best 2-sided mattress: Layla
Layla mattress, from $599 (Photo: Layla)
With a Layla mattress, you’re getting a 2-for-1 deal: One side is plush and cradling, and the other is firm to offer more support. The dual-sided mattress is infused with copper gel for a cool sleep experience (more on that, below).
Over 2,200 reviewers have given the mattress a perfect 5-star rating. “Layla is like sleeping on a cloud,” wrote one verified buyer. Another customer wrote: “I was a little worried about getting a new mattress, and it has been difficult to pick one out of what seems like an endless selection of perfectly suited memory foam mattresses for side sleepers with back pain… this mattress was the right choice. It is cushy and supportive and doesn’t make me hot or let me sink.
The craftsmanship: Layla mattresses are all made in the U.S. A 4.5-inch base foam support is topped with 2 inches of an airflow-friendly convoluted foam. Sandwiching those two layers is 4 inches of copper-infused memory foam. Copper is heat-conductive and has antimicrobial properties, which means it will pull away excess body heat and kill bacteria.
Delivery: Shipping is free for the lower 48 states (for Alaska and Hawaii, the charge is $125). Each mattress is made to order so you can expect two to three business days to manufacture. Once it ships, you’ll receive a compressed and rolled up mattress in a box within two to five business days from Phoenix.
Return policy: If after 120 nights you still don’t like your mattress, Layla will arrange for a pickup and donate it. Once it receives a donation receipt, it’ll refund 100 percent of your money. The only downside is shipping fees to Canada, Hawaii or Alaska are nonrefundable.

Allswell mattress, from $245 (Photo: Allswell)
Allswell offers two mattresses, both of which are hybrids made with foam and individually wrapped coils. Although the more affordable version is a bestseller, the brand’s signature higher-end model is well worth it. The Allswell Luxe Hybrid boats a built-in plush topper that’s cool to the touch and feels like a fancy hotel bed.
“Better than a 5-star hotel,” raved one reviewer of the Luxe Hybrid. “Truly amazing. I have been looking for a new bed for quite a while now and this is it. Great product for the price. Top quality that conforms to your body.” Another well-rested fan with the original Allswell wrote: “It is so comfy and stays rather cool which is a major plus for me. I am considering updating all our mattresses to the Allswell mattresses because I slept like a baby the first night and now after a few months it is amazing!”
The craftsmanship: Both Allswell mattresses are made in the U.S. and utilize foam and coil technology. Each one also has a top layer of Coolflow foam to improve breathability, and the Luxe hybrid has an extra plush topper.

“True American quality,” wrote one 5-star reviewer. “Being a part of the U.S. Military Special Operations community is probably one of the most rigorous and physically demanding careers out there and to come home after a long and grueling night and sleep on this system has me completely refreshed and recharged to do it all over again the next day.
