This is one of our hummingbird feeders, suspended off our kitchen window. There's another feeder visible in the background, in the yard down below. For whatever reason, this one's the more popular of the two.
It's on the other side of the kitchen counter, so when doing food prep by the compost bucket the feeder is less than 2' (60 cm) away.
What never ceases to amaze us is looking up to see someone sitting there - knowing that s/he flew up, saw you standing there, and landed anyway. We do our best to welcome them and let them know they're safe with us, but still.
An amazing gift, every day. Hummingbirds mostly, but House Finches, Bushtits, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Yellow Warbler...

This is how I keep my hummingbird feeder open in below freezing temps - a large mason jar wrapped in paper towel and tin foil and filled with very hot water.
It gives off enough heat to keep the juice liquid in mild freezing temps like today’s -5C, but tomorrow’s forecasted -14C will probably be too much for it, so I’ll combine this method with swapping out my second feeder throughout the day.

I love humming birds! They’re such gorgeous animals.
I was delivering to a house one time that had a bunch of hummingbird feeders. The hummingbirds would fight over them. One time I was walking up to the front door and a hummingbird smacked into the side of my head. Turns out they aren’t the best at flying when they’re fighting each other.

I enjoy frequent visits from hummingbirds in my backyard. They are extremely friendly and respond well to kindness.

Thursday harvest - That is the last of the Buhl sweet corn. We've already pulled the corn plants. We replanted the larger corn plot with Fisher's Earliest sweet corn hoping for a Fall harvest. The smaller plot was planted with Swiss Chard:

Friday harvest - That squash is from a plant that we saved from being killed by a squash vine borer by dumping leaf litter and compost on top of the next leaf node above the damaged section of vine which gave the plant the nutrition & protection it needed to set down advantageous roots & survive:

World’s easiest DIY hummingbird feeder: an empty McCormick spice jar (since they love red), a piece of yarn, and simple syrup filled nearly to the top to account for the angle

The hummingbird feeder has been cleaned and refilled. Within 3 minutes Dalton was there to sample the fresh sugar water. As much as I'd like the second comer to be Persephone, I'm pretty sure bird number 2 is a juvenile male.

So many hummingbirds at my mom's feeders! We think they might be the offspring of some of our usual, since a lot of them match.

Not exactly news, but a story. There is a hummingbird that lives around our house who still bullies me to fill the feeder. The feeder has been down and put away - as in in a cabinet and in no way visible or accessible to the birds - for 3 years. But he still squeaks angrily at me.
His name is Mr. Grumpy Pants.
When the feeder was still up, if he took one (1) sip, the feeder was Empty. HUMAN. HUMAN YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE. >:0 EMPTY.
If another hummingbird came to drink from it, he would swoop in and indignantly squeak at them because THAT IS MY FEEDER. He would sit in a tree across from the feeder all day and fox guard it from other hummers. I sometimes wonder if he'd actually ever leave and go eat anything or if he'd just sit there. Yelling at kids to get off his lawn.

Here's Mr. Grumpy Pants yelling at another hummingbird who just. Did not care. She(?) would look up at him then go back to drinking. I like to imagine she had six hatchlings at home and had just come off a double shift at the BR (bird emergency room). Not at all fazed by Mr. GP's shit.
It's been three years and he still yells at me. If hummingbirds don't actually live that long, then he told his kids. That's the news.
give me good bird news
