This is how I keep my hummingbird feeder open in below freezing temps - a large mason jar wrapped in paper towel and tin foil and filled with very hot water.
It gives off enough heat to keep the juice liquid in mild freezing temps like today’s -5C, but tomorrow’s forecasted -14C will probably be too much for it, so I’ll combine this method with swapping out my second feeder throughout the day.
I love humming birds! They’re such gorgeous animals.
I was delivering to a house one time that had a bunch of hummingbird feeders. The hummingbirds would fight over them. One time I was walking up to the front door and a hummingbird smacked into the side of my head. Turns out they aren’t the best at flying when they’re fighting each other.

Thursday harvest - That is the last of the Buhl sweet corn. We've already pulled the corn plants. We replanted the larger corn plot with Fisher's Earliest sweet corn hoping for a Fall harvest. The smaller plot was planted with Swiss Chard:
Friday harvest - That squash is from a plant that we saved from being killed by a squash vine borer by dumping leaf litter and compost on top of the next leaf node above the damaged section of vine which gave the plant the nutrition & protection it needed to set down advantageous roots & survive:
World’s easiest DIY hummingbird feeder: an empty McCormick spice jar (since they love red), a piece of yarn, and simple syrup filled nearly to the top to account for the angle
The hummingbird feeder has been cleaned and refilled. Within 3 minutes Dalton was there to sample the fresh sugar water. As much as I'd like the second comer to be Persephone, I'm pretty sure bird number 2 is a juvenile male.
